  • Bake Off star reveals she’s tried weight-loss jabs and ‘didn’t lose a pound’

    [ad_1]

Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith has opened up about her brief experience using weight-loss injections, revealing she turned to the popular jab Mounjaro, but found it ineffective, exhausting and ultimately a waste of time.

The 85-year-old food writer and restaurateur told The Times that she tested the prescription drug, also known as Tirzepatide, for two months in hopes of slimming down.

Despite losing her appetite entirely, she said she didn’t shed a single pound.

“I hated the bloody thing. I took it for two months, lost my appetite completely and didn’t shed an ounce. Nothing. Every day I got on the scales and I still weighed exactly the same as before.”

Mounjaro was originally developed for Type-2 diabetes. It has since become a top name in the world of weight-loss medication, touted for its appetite-suppressing effects. But for Prue, the results were disappointing, and draining.

“I was tired all the time, presumably because I wasn’t eating,” she said, adding that her husband, John Playfair, commented that she looked thinner. “I think [that] means old and scraggy round the face. As soon as I could, I stopped. It was terrible for me.”

While the jab didn’t work for Prue, her husband John had better luck. She revealed he’s lost two stone using the same medication, and with it, his desire to drink. She said he “hardly drinks now” and she’s “a great boozer”.

The couple have been married since 2016, following the death of Prue’s first husband, author Rayne Kruger, in 2002.

Together, they adopted their daughter Li-Da from Cambodia, and had a son, Danny Kruger.

    Prue on ‘having it all’

The candid chat comes on the heels of Prue’s recent reflections on balancing motherhood with ambition.

Speaking on Fearne Cotton’s Happy Place podcast, she said she wouldn’t have been able to build her culinary empire if she had started a family in her twenties.

“I didn’t have my children until I was 34. So I had my business under my belt before I started breeding,” she said. “If we had married that young… I could not possibly have run the restaurant or opened the school. All of that was in 10 years.”

She went on to emphasise the importance of timing and help when trying to ‘have it all’.

“It boils down to getting the help. It isn’t possible to bring up two or three children and have a full-time job without help.”

Let’s Wildly Speculate About The Great British Bake Off (Based on No Baking)

Get out your anti-anxiety meds — Bake Off is back. The Great British Baking Show, also known as The Great British Bake Off, also known as Bake Off, is the most stressful show on television, even if it is packaged in a twee, fondant bow. Each year the contestants are pushed to the limit of their baking capabilities, and each year audiences around the world watch in horror as contestants somehow forget to turn on their ovens. The upcoming 12th season of the show premieres on U.S. Netflix on September 27. But before it does, we are making snap decisions on who will do well this season — based solely on photos and the descriptions provided by the Netflix PR machine. Who will crack under the pressure? Who will get a handshake? Who will ultimately win out? It’s all decided, zero percent based on baking talent, below.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

Someone has to be first off, so we’re predicting Andy. It can be hard for non-STEM straight men to get a footing on modern Bake Off, with its love of fiddly little details. Plus, he is one of five separate contestants who, when asked about their favorite snack, say popcorn. He is the only one, however, who only says “popcorn” and gives no further description.

Often, one of the “youths” on the show surprises us, but we’re not putting our money on Dylan as the one to do it this season. Dylan is only 20, and his flavor influences sound fascinating, with Japanese and French baking both mentioned in his bio. One phrase trips us up, however — “Dylan loves experimenting with sweet and spice in his baking.” Paul and Prue do not have what we would call “expansive” palates for spice, and a young guy “experimenting” is a bit worrisome. Sorry, buddy.

We don’t have a lot to go on here, but what we do know is that, in the group shot, it is quite clear that Nelly is wearing Ugg boots. Serious bakers on this show wear sneakers, so they have the proper arch support while on their feet all day. Unfortunately, there’s no coming back from that.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

An … American? (Gasp!) Yes, it’s true. Jeff is American-born (originally from the Bronx) but moved to the U.K. in 1979. That means he’s been in the U.K. for longer than many of the other bakers have been alive, but still, it does seem like Paul and Prue would resent an American baker making hot cross buns.

Hazel is a star. Ranking her this high when she projects a kind of “devil may care” attitude in all photos might honestly be wishful thinking, but our emotions are getting the best of us. She’s a 71-year-old former nail technician, and her bio tells us that “Her granddaughter’s 7th-birthday cake was a carousel with 500 edible diamonds that took Hazel two weeks to make!” STAR! STAR! STAR!

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

Christiaan is listed as a “menswear designer,” which is, in many ways, a good sign. It means he’ll be fussy! Still, the best Bake Off contestants are usually the ones where baking is their only creative outlet and it has boiled over into being the primary thing they care about in the world (see: Nadiya). We can’t be sure that he has the passion.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

John looks like a very pleasant guy. It’s a good-to-great sign that his favorite thing to bake is a “classic lemon tart” and that he runs scheduling in his job at the NHS — stressful! But we still think he might crack. Just look at his hair. Do you think that a man with that bleach job won’t break under the stare of Paul Hollywood for weeks on end? Be serious.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

We love Georgie. She looks like exactly the kind of mum (not “mom”) who’s house you want to go to after school, because you know she has some delicacy at the ready in the fridge. She’s also a pediatric nurse, which means she has experience under pressure. Overall, we think Georgie will be a contender, but she just can’t quite crack our top-four spots.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

Here’s a big swing for you — we think this 19-year-old is going almost all the way. Sometimes youth can be a boon on this show, especially when you don’t know enough to be nervous, and Sumayah’s bio flouts that she once made a three-foot-tall macaron tower with 240 macarons for her aunt’s wedding. Talk about a high-pressure situation? That’s bonkers. This girl knows nothing about curbing ambition. Excited for her.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

Mike knows food. A fourth-generation farmer, he was apparently shortlisted for Young Farmer of the Year at the 2024 National Arable and Grassland Awards. Very impressive! His bio states he likes “big, hearty bakes,” which is going to be great for Bread Week, we’d assume. We would be worried that he can’t measure up in precision, but he’s also “an advocate for the LGBTQ+ community within farming.” He’ll be fine.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

Gill seems to have it all — she apparently “can’t remember a time when she didn’t bake,” loves data, and makes traditional bakes with modern twists. All great things on this show. In both her headshot and the group shot she seems excited yet solid. The only reason we’re not choosing her as the winner is that we worry that her creativity won’t blow the judges away in the finale.

    Photo: Mark Bourdillon/Netflix

We’re all in on Illiyin. Her influences seem to come from an infinite amount of places — her bio references Middle Eastern ingredients in desserts, Caribbean flavors in savory bakes, a youth in Norfolk, and a Spanish husband. So she’ll be able to surprise. She’s also a “birthing trauma specialist midwife,” so we cannot imagine pressure getting to her. And her smile is simply infectious and we have to imagine she’ll charm the judges. Illiyin for the win!

Strictly favourite reveals his ‘career in television is done’ as he admits ‘I’ve had a great run and I’ve loved it’

In Strictly news, runner-up John Whaite revealed he’s quit the TV industry after Steph’s Packed Lunch has been axed.

The telly star, 34, reacted to the “deeply sad news” that the show will be taken off air. He said that this was the real reason he was absent from the show.

This news comes after he admitted he “fell” for his Strictly Come Dancing pro partner Johannes Radebe while filming the show in 2021.

John revealed he planned to “leave TV this year”

The former Great British Bake Off contestant said the decision to pull out from the show made “no difference” to him.  Since he plans to focus on his “business and creativity”.

John explained how he felt about leaving television. Taking to his Instagram, he said: “This is the truth, I was going to leave TV this year anyway. That’s why I’ve been off Packed Lunch for a couple of weeks just to get my head in the gear and I just came to the conclusion that I think my career in television is now done. I’ve had a great run and loved it.”

This is the truth, I was going to leave TV this year anyway.

He continued: “I’ll do the odd bit here and there but I need to focus my attention now on business and on my creativity, so that’s where I am.”

John added that if his followers want to think about anybody they should “please think of the Packed Lunch team”.

He paid tribute to the show

John then went on and paid tribute to the show. He wrote: “Breaking my little Insta-pause to post about this. I’m sure you’ve read the deeply sad news that Steph’s Packed Lunch will not be returning after December.”

He continued: “I want to shout, as loud as possible, about how brilliant the team have been. The eclectic mix of folk from a hodgepodge of backgrounds and generations worked tirelessly to try to keep the integrity of a 100-year-old industry alive and bring lunchtime entertainment and company to many a household. What they created was a show that was as diverse as it was welcoming, and I hope each and every one of them continues to thrive wherever the wind next takes them because they deserve nothing but success.

He concluded his post and thanked the food team: “Courtney, Sarah and the talented home economists – have been a lifeline to me on so many occasions, and it’s been an honour to work with them (and the rest of the production and editorial teams) for the past 3 years.”

  • Prue Leith Reveals She ‘Drowned Some Kittens’ In A Bag As A Child

Prue Leith Reveals She ‘Drowned Some Kittens’ In A Bag As A Child

    [ad_1]

Prue Leith has shared an unsettling story from her youth. The Great British Bake Off” judge wrote about a time she drowned a litter of kittens in her new memoir “I’ll Try Anything Once.”

According to an excerpt published in HuffPost UK and London Broadcasting Co., Leith was 11 years old when her mother instructed her to kill the hours-old kittens.

“My mother and I, then 11, had just drowned some kittens… and for weeks I imagined those poor dead creatures,” the South African restaurateur wrote.

“Too many kittens was a frequent occurrence and there had come a day when my mother, unable to find homes for yet another litter, decided to drown the latest batch.”

Leith wrote in her book that she tried to talk her mom out of it, but the protests were ultimately “met with a firm ‘darling, it has to be done. They are only a few hours old. They will hardly know it’s happening.’”

In a haunting description, Leith noted that the tiny animals “fought like the devil for life.”

“I held the bag under the water until the last kitten had stopped mewing,” she wrote.

Leith explained to HuffPost why she decided to include this story in her new memoir.

“This happened in the early 1940′s, when I was 11 years old, being brought up on a farm in South Africa,” she wrote in an emailed statement. “I wrote about it honestly in my book, as an 11 year old it was an extremely traumatic experience, not one I would forget, however it is what happened 70 years ago.”

She also advocated neutering and spaying pets.

“Thankfully today in the UK we have the choice of neutering our cats and have more options to home kittens, although sadly in some parts of the world it is still an issue.”

Humane Society International stresses the importance of spay and neuter initiatives for stray animals, noting those who are not “are often euthanized, neglected or die of disease.”

“When effectively delivered and combined with vaccinations, spay/neuter provides a humane and effective way to reduce the number of animals living on the streets, and improves the health of those remaining,” the society says on its website. “Sterilizing community dogs and returning them to their territories on the streets allows for a natural reduction in their population over time and leaves the most socialized dogs on the streets.”

The organization also noted that neutered animals are viewed “more favorably” by the general public.
