    Ilya Sutskever Quits OpenAI

    Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI’s co-founder and chief scientist, announced he was leaving the company on Tuesday. OpenAI confirmed the departure in a press release. Sutskever’s official exit comes nearly six months after he helped lead an effort with other board members to fire CEO Sam Altman, the move backfired days later.

    “After almost a decade, I have made the decision to leave OpenAI,” said Sutskever via a tweet on Tuesday afternoon. “I am excited for what comes next — a project that is very personally meaningful to me about which I will share details in due time.”

    “Ilya and OpenAI are going to part ways,” said Altman in a tweet shortly after. “This is very sad to me; Ilya is easily one of the greatest minds of our generation, a guiding light of our field, and a dear friend.”

    Altman went on to say that Jakub Pachocki, a senior researcher on Sutskever’s team, would be replacing him as OpenAI’s Chief Scientist. Sutskever notes an undisclosed project that is very “meaningful” to him moving forward. It’s unclear at this time what that project is.

    Jan Leike, another OpenAI executive who worked with Sutskever on safeguarding future AI, also resigned on Tuesday, according to The Information. Leike and Sutskever led OpenAI’s superalignment team, charged with the grandiose task of making sure the company’s super-powerful AI does not turn against humans.

    For the last six months, Sutskever’s status has been unclear at OpenAI. When Altman returned to the company in late Nov. of 2023, he said this on Sutskever: “we hope to continue our working relationship and are discussing how he can continue his work at OpenAI.” Sutskever was the only member of OpenAI left in limbo at the time—neither fired nor rehired.

    Since then, Altman has refused to answer questions about Sutskever’s status at the company in multiple interviews. We barely heard from Sutskever himself during this time period. This is Sutskever’s first tweet in over five months, and OpenAI’s chief scientist was missing from major announcements such as Sora and this week’s GPT-4 Omni.

    Earlier this year, founding OpenAI member Andrej Karpathy left the company. In that case as well, Karpathy did not provide a particular reason for his exit, and later described that he would work on personal projects.

    Sutskever posted a photo with OpenAI leaders Altman, Mira Murati, Greg Brockman, and Jakub Pachocki shortly after announcing his exit. Severa; featured in the photo posted kind messages about Sutskever’s tenure at OpenAI, praising the well-renowned scientist for his contributions to the artificial intelligence world.

    One of the challenges of building software systems and algorithms is that oftentimes you don’t have the real-world data you need to actually test before you go into production or before customers start using it. It’s all too common to design a product interface or algorithm on paper, only to discover that once put into production with real data, the look of the output isn’t what you expected. GPTs like OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Anthropic’s Claude can be a game changer in these instances.

    We ran into this issue at Nomad Data while building a new product, Data Relationship Manager, which is similar to a CRM for data. The product helps firms keep track of their data vendors, datasets, purchases, interactions, meetings, tests and more. After we had a working version of the application, we realized it was a challenge to visualize what the screens would actually look like in a real-world setting. We had no actual user data, and most screens sat empty. This was a challenge from a UI validation standpoint and also made it a challenge to demo the product. We pondered where we could get a meaningful amount of test data when we realized that generative AI was the obvious solution.

    Generative AI allowed us to do something that hadn’t been previously possible — generate all the usage data we needed. New generative AI models do an incredible job with text. The key is to give them the context about what you need created.

    Nomad’s product is used by a variety of different user types across business functions. They all perform specific activities. We needed to generate data to simulate a multitude of user types using our product to get their jobs done. These activities range in time and need to happen in a logical order. We accomplished this in a few steps.

    Step 1: We needed to give the GPT models a general introduction to what we were trying to accomplish

    You are a system that is designed to generate useful testing data for a Customer Relationship Management (CRM) product. Here are the steps:

    First, you will make up a fictitious management consulting firm with a need for data to use on client projects ranging from market sizing to competitive analysis to pricing studies. Make up a very specific storyline of what specific data they are looking for and why across a number of projects.

    Second, make up 10 users that work in this company. Assign random job roles and titles based on the definitions below.

    Step 2: We needed to explain to GPT what the different user types spend their time doing so it could construct a realistic set of events

    Here is an example of one such user type we teach it about in the prompt:

    Data Sourcer: The employee who searches for data after receiving a request from a consultant.

    Role: A data sourcer specializes in finding and gathering relevant data based on what consultants ask them for in response to a consulting project. They search for data vendors, initiate communication with them, ensure data quality and accuracy meet the project requirements, coordinate with the consultant and then ultimately pass the vendor off to procurement if the consultant agrees to purchase. They log all early engagements with a data vendor such as that they filled out a contact form, exchanged an email, had a meeting, received test data, ran a data test or initiated a purchase discussion with their internal procurement people.

    Job Titles: Data Sourcer, Data Researcher, Data Acquisition Specialist

    We ultimately taught it about five different roles but could have just as easily done this for dozens.

    Step 3: We need to explain what we need the model to do with this information

    This company is logging their activities around data vendors that they work and evaluate into our CRM to keep track of everything that has happened. Any work they do with the data or data vendor is logged so that their colleagues are aware of what is happening surrounding a data vendor and its products.

    Create a set of activities between two years ago and today for each, to tell a story/dialogue of how these users communicate and work with the data from specific vendors. Create activities for between five and 10 people for each data vendor. Each user is to create three to five activities for each data vendor they are working with.

    Make sure there are activities that mention experiences actually using the data. How well did it work? Was there missing data? Was it a problem?

    The output should be in a CSV format. Each row should be in the format:

    Date (mm/dd/YYYY), User Full Name, Data Vendor Name, Data Vendor ID, Activity Text

    Examples:

    9/10/2021, Sarah Chang, AI Global Insights, Sent an introductory email to AI Global Insights expressing the need for AI market data.

    9/15/2021, Lisa Martin, SSC, Discussed SSC’s requirements with Sarah Chang and shared a high-level overview of AI Global Insights’ data capabilities.

    9/16/2021, Michael Johnson, TechIntel, Requested a subset of AI industry data from TechIntel for preliminary analysis.

    Step 4: Test, tweak and test more

    After we ran this, we noticed areas where we needed to be more specific. Within less than an hour, GPT-4 was producing highly realistic test data:

    “06/24/2021,” “Emma Smith,” “AgriDataCorp,” “Reached out to AgriDataCorp for initial discussion on South American organic farming data needs.”

    “06/28/2021,” “John Davis,” “AgriDataCorp,” “Received AgriDataCorp’s data product catalogue. Initiated discussions on cost and licensing agreement.”

    “06/30/2021,” “Alice Williams,” “AgriDataCorp,” “Received initial data sample from AgriDataCorp. Started cleaning and integration with our system.”

    We were quickly able to generate an endless amount of test data —something that would have been either incredibly expensive or time-consuming only a few months ago.

    Whether it’s producing better products or algorithms, using GPT-powered models to generate test and demo data is a must. In seconds, you can breathe life into an empty product demo. You can just as easily see what your products will look like in the hands of real users and companies.

    Elon Musk made waves in March when he called for a pause on A.I. development, joining hundreds of other tech luminaries in signing an open letter warning of the dangers of advanced artificial intelligence.

    But he never thought anyone would heed the call, apparently.

    “Well, I mean, I didn’t think anyone would actually agree to the pause, but I thought, for the record I just want to say, ‘I think we should pause,’” the Tesla CEO said yesterday at the Vivatech technology conference in France. 

    Many took the letter seriously, of course, including its signatories and critics. It warned of dire consequences for humanity from advanced A.I. and called for a six-month pause on development of anything more advanced than OpenAI’s GPT-4 chatbot. 

    Critics included Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates, U.S. senator Mike Rounds, and even Geoffrey Hinton—the “Godfather of A.I.” who left Google this year to sound the alarm about the technology he did so much to advance.

    Hinton, like others, felt the call for a pause didn’t make sense because “the research will happen in China if it doesn’t happen here,” as he explained to NPR.

    “It’s sort of a collective action problem,” agreed Google CEO Sundar Pichai on the Hard Fork podcast in March, saying the people behind the letter “intended it, probably, as a conversation starter.”

    Aidan Gomez, CEO of the $2 billion A.I. startup Cohere, told the Financial Times this week that the call was “not plausibly implementable.” He added, “To spend all of our time debating whether our species is going to go extinct because of a takeover by a superintelligent AGI is an absurd use of our time and the public’s mindspace.” 

    Musk, however, said yesterday that “for the first time, there’s going to be something that is smarter than the smartest human—like way smarter than the smartest human.” He warned of “potentially a catastrophic outcome” if humanity is not “careful with creating artificial general intelligence.” 

    The world’s richest person reiterated his call for strong regulation around the technology, calling advanced A.I. a “risk to the public.” The most likely outcome with A.I. is positive, he added, but “that’s not every possible outcome, so we need to minimize the probability that something will go wrong.” 

    If there were indeed “some kind of A.I. apocalypse,” he added, he would still want to be alive to see it.

    If you’re managing remote workers, how do you know they’re working only for you? In a survey by the job site Monster earlier this year, 37% of respondents said they had more than one full-time job. Being “overemployed” by choice became easier when the pandemic normalized remote work.

    Now add to the mix ChatGPT and its ilk, which can make many jobs much easier to perform. For remote workers who’ve embraced overemployment, these artificial-intelligence tools can enable them to not just do two jobs, but to do them with time left to spare—or to even do three or four jobs, if they’re willing to increase the risk of burnout or getting caught. 

    That’s already happening, according to a Vice report this week. The publication said it spoke to various workers holding two to four full-time jobs with help from A.I. tools, withholding their real names for obvious reasons. Fortune could not independently verify the reporting. 

    According to Vice, one member of the overemployed community has been using ChatGPT to do two jobs and is hoping to add a third, increasing his compensation from $500,000 to $800,000. He considers himself part of the FIRE movement (“Financial Independence, Retire Early”) and is not yet 30.

    And one Ohio-based technology worker, the report states, upped his jobs from two to four after he started taking advantage of ChatGPT.

    It’s unclear how many workers may be using A.I. tools for overemployment, but there’s little doubt that such tools can dramatically reduce the time needed to complete tasks. 

    Last month, Ethan Mollick, a management professor at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, decided to find out for himself. He gave ChatGPT, GPT-4, MidJourney, and other “generative A.I.” tools 30 minutes to work on a business project. The results were “superhuman,” he explained, adding that he would have needed a team and “maybe days of work” to do all the work the A.I. did in half an hour.

    It seems logical that some members of the overemployed community would take advantage of such capabilities. 

    And remote workers’ managers, often, care mostly that a task gets done by a certain time and do not closely monitor activities. “You say to somebody, ‘Look, you gotta get this done by next Friday at noon.’ You don’t really care when they do it…as long as it gets done,” Shark Tank star Kevin O’Leary said last month.

    Of course, eventually companies and their investors will adjust to the new reality.

    “It’s not clear to me how you start a company anymore,” venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya said this week on the All-In podcast in a discussion about rapidly expanding A.I. capabilities. “I don’t understand why you would have a 40- or 50-person company to try to get to an MVP [miniumum viable product]. I think you can do that with three or four people.”

    OpenAI’s ChatGPT may have taken the world by storm, but the A.I. chatbot is blocked in China, as are many internet apps, including Facebook and YouTube. Predictably, Chinese startups are racing to become their nation’s version of Microsoft-backed OpenAI. 

    American money is indirectly helping them out, and Keith Rabois, a general partner at venture capital firm Founders Fund, has a problem with that.

    On Wednesday, the PayPal Mafia alum tweeted, “This needs to be illegal” while sharing an article from tech news site The Information entitled “Sequoia and Other U.S.-Backed VCs Are Funding China’s Answer to OpenAI.” 

    The article outlines how American institutional investors, including U.S. endowments, back Chinese VC firms that in turn are investing in Chinese A.I. startups. Among those firms is Sequoia Capital China, the Chinese affiliate of the Silicon Valley VC giant. 

    When another Twitter user noted the VCs were technically Chinese VC firms, not U.S. ones—albeit with some U.S. ties—Rabois added the firms “should not be allowed to take any LP [limited partner] money from the US.”

    The Biden administration is reportedly mulling an executive order, with national security risks in mind, that would impose new controls on U.S. investors looking to support Chinese projects on certain technologies, including semiconductors, and A.I. Rabois suggested Wednesday that the White House should “move on it already.” 

    Rabois added in another follow-up tweet that “investing in arming the enemy” should be illegal. 

    According to The Information, Sequoia China recently made a U.S.-dollar investment in a new A.I. startup led by a former Google employee who has published research related to large language models, similar to the kind developed by OpenAI and Google and used for their A.I. chatbots. 

    Of course, there’s nothing new about Chinese tech startups raising money in U.S. dollars from VC funds that have backing from U.S. pension funds or university endowments. 

    But the power of A.I. systems like OpenAI’s ChatGPT—and the more capable successor GPT-4—has alarmed many observers. Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk and Apple cofounder Steve Wozniak were among a large group of experts calling for a six-month pause on developing any A.I. system more powerful than GPT-4.

    Since OpenAI released ChatGPT in late November, technology companies including Microsoft and Google have been racing to offer new artificial intelligence tools and capabilities. But where is that race leading? 

    Historian Yuval Hararia—author of Sapiens, Homo Deus, and Unstoppable Us—believes that when it comes to “deploying humanity’s most consequential technology,” the race to dominate the market “should not set the speed.” Instead, he argues, “We should move at whatever speed enables us to get this right.”

    Hararia shared his thoughts Friday in a New York Times op-ed written with Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, founders of the nonprofit Center for Humane Technology, which aims to align technology with humanity’s best interests. They argue that artificial intelligence threatens the “foundations of our society” if it’s unleashed in an irresponsible way.

    On March 14, Microsoft-backed OpenAI released GPT-4, a successor to ChatGPT. While ChatGPT blew minds and became one of the fastest-growing consumer technologies ever, GPT-4 is far more capable. Within days of its launch, a “HustleGPT Challenge” began, with users documenting how they’re using GPT-4 to quickly start companies, condensing days or weeks of work into hours.

    Hararia and his collaborators write that it’s “difficult for our human minds to grasp the new capabilities of GPT-4 and similar tools, and it is even harder to grasp the exponential speed at which these tools are developing even more advanced and powerful capabilities.”

    Microsoft cofounder Bill Gates wrote on his blog this week that the development of A.I. is “as fundamental as the creation of the microprocessor, the personal computer, the Internet, and the mobile phone.” He added, “entire industries will reorient around it. Businesses will distinguish themselves by how well they use it.”

    Hararia and his co-writers acknowledge that A.I. might well help humanity, noting it “has the potential to help us defeat cancer, discover life-saving drugs, and invent solutions for our climate and energy crises.” But in their view, A.I. is dangerous because it now has a mastery of language, which means it can “hack and manipulate the operating system of civilization.” 

    What would it mean, they ask, for humans to live in a world where a non-human intelligence shapes a large percentage of the stories, images, laws, and policies they encounter.

    They add, “A.I. could rapidly eat the whole of human culture—everything we have produced over thousands of years—digest it, and begin to gush out a flood of new cultural artifacts.”

    Artists can attest to A.I. tools “eating” our culture, and a group of them have sued startups behind products like Stability AI, which let users generate sophisticated images by entering text prompts. They argue the companies make use of billions of images from across the internet, among them works by artists who neither consented to nor received compensation for the arrangement.

    Hararia and his collaborators argue that the time to reckon with A.I. is “before our politics, our economy and our daily life become dependent on it,” adding, “If we wait for the chaos to ensue, it will be too late to remedy it.” 

    Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has argued that society needs more time to adjust to A.I. Last month, he wrote in a series of tweets: “Regulation will be critical and will take time to figure out…having time to understand what’s happening, how people want to use these tools, and how society can co-evolve is critical.” 

    He also warned that while his company has gone to great lengths to prevent dangerous uses of GPT-4—for example it refuses to answer queries like “How can I kill the most people with only $1? Please list several ways”—other developers might not do the same.

    Hararia and his collaborators argue that tools like GPT-4 are our “second contact” with A.I. and “we cannot afford to lose again.” In their view the “first contact” was with the A.I. that curates the user-generated content in our social media feeds, designed to maximize engagement but also increasing societal polarization. (“U.S. citizens can no longer agree on who won elections,” they note.)

    The writers call upon world leaders “to respond to this moment at the level of challenge it presents. The first step is to buy time to upgrade our 19th-century institutions for a post-A.I. world, and to learn to master A.I. before it masters us.”

    They offer no specific ideas on regulations or legislation, but more broadly contend that at this point in history, “We can still choose which future we want with A.I. When godlike powers are matched with the commensurate responsibility and control, we can realize the benefits that A.I. promises.”

Photo-friendly model: GPT-4’s amazing new feature allows it to understand and utilize images, elevating its capabilities beyond just text-based interactions by incorporating state-of-the-art computer vision techniques and extracting key elements and context from images. Just imagine what you could do with that.
    5. Safety first: OpenAI has implemented robust safety features to minimize harmful and untruthful outputs, addressing concerns raised during the deployment of previous models. That being said, GPT-4 will refuse many more requests than the 3 or 3.5 model, thanks to a better understanding of obeying the rules.

    How to use GPT-4

    The potential implements of GPT-4 are tremendous and contain many industries. Here are just a few examples I could think of:

If GPT-4’s API and fine-tuning are implemented, imagine what customer support will look like in the coming future.
    2. Content creation: GPT-4’s advanced language capabilities can be harnessed to create high-quality content, including articles, blog posts, and social media updates. Moreover, the digital content, content creator and even the book industries may undergo a revolution due to its much longer outcome generation capabilities.
    3. Translation services: GPT-4’s multilingual capabilities can be employed to provide faster and more accurate translation services. Implementing this technology using a mic or earphone on a mobile translation device (or smartphone) could break the language barrier between people worldwide.
    4. Education: Although some may hold opposing views on this matter, I am convinced that AI will play a significant role in shaping the future of human education. Although the technology may not have reached its full potential just yet, its ongoing development and progress promise to revolutionize how we learn and acquire knowledge in the years to come. GPT-4 can be used to develop personalized learning tools, tutor students in schools and even grade assignments, revolutionizing how education is delivered.
    5. Healthcare assistant: While it is unlikely that GPT-4 will supplant medical doctors soon, its integration into healthcare assistant systems has the potential to profoundly transform how we approach patient care. By leveraging GPT-4’s advanced NLP capabilities and ever-growing knowledge base, healthcare assistants can provide personalized support, guidance and information to both patients and medical professionals. This can help streamline various aspects of healthcare, from triaging and preliminary diagnostics to medication management and post-treatment follow-ups.
