  • Crypto Tumbles Hard: Google Search Trends Call Last Local Market Top

    The crypto market succumbed to a significant amount of bearish pressure starting on Thursday, August 28, with most large-cap assets tumbling to new lows on Friday, August 29. The price of Bitcoin, the world’s largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization, fell to a new low of $107,850 at the start of the weekend.

    Unsurprisingly, the latest data shows that this latest price decline seen across the digital asset market could have been predicted. This conclusion is based on recent crypto activity on the world’s largest search engine, Google.

    Is The Crypto Bull Cycle Over?

    In an August 29 post on social media platform X, Alphractal founder and CEO Joao Wedson revealed that crypto-related searches on Google have surged to new highs in recent days. According to the on-chain data expert, this recent spike in Google searches suggests that Bitcoin and the broader crypto market might have reached a new local top.

    This revelation is based on the Google Trends chart, which allows investors to assess the social engagement of different crypto-related topics on the search engine. As shown in the chart below, the metric compares various subjects, including cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, altcoins, centralized exchanges, and data aggregation platforms.

    As observed in the highlighted chart, the Google Trends metric recently witnessed a significant surge, suggesting increased public attention across multiple crypto topics. According to Wedson, spikes of this kind have historically coincided with whales entering the market to sell while “everyone is obsessed.”

    Moreover, the cryptocurrency market has often shown in the past its tendency to move in the crowd’s opposite direction. These trends explain the price decline witnessed by most digital assets in the past few days, as the market has seemingly reached a new local top.

    Wedson, however, noted that other on-chain signals say that the latest euphoria-driven market downturn doesn’t necessarily spell the end of the current bull cycle. “Think back to BTC hitting $124K—euphoria peaked online, whales sold aggressively, and we went short,” the Alphractal founder added.

    Wedson then advised investors to exercise caution when euphoria hits the crypto market, as it could hint at the imminence of a local top. The crypto analyst said that a better strategy would be to smartly exit the market at a high price and reenter at a cheaper rate later.

    Total Crypto Market Cap At $3.7 Trillion

    As of this writing, the total crypto market capitalization sits just above $3.7 trillion, reflecting an almost 4% decline in the past day. According to data from TradingView, more than $142 billion has been drained out of the crypto market in the last 24 hours.

    If Google Trends data is anything to go by, it could mean that Americans don’t care about Bitcoin (BTC) or the interest is ultra-low and falling despite the series of bullish events in the last few days. 

    Americans Are Not Interested In Bitcoin?

    A spot check of Google Trends over the past years shows that not only are searches related to “buy Bitcoin” discouragingly falling but are at 2023 lows, with related average daily searches scoring less than 20. The only time “buy Bitcoin” searches spiked was in early September when it rose to a score of 70, an indicator that more people were curious, willing to explore, and even buy the world’s most valuable coin.

    Sentiment is a crucial factor in crypto because it can influence prices. To illustrate, when sentiment improves, crypto investors are more likely to buy and hold on to their treasured coins in hopes of riding the emerging trend and raking in profits.

    Conversely, when crypto assets begin falling, as in 2022 and the second half of 2023, holders will often flee to safety, selling their coins for stablecoins like USDT or cash. In some instances, however, without an option, investors will look to exit for an established coin like Bitcoin or Ethereum (ETH), pumping those respective assets.

    As the market evolves, sentiment can be influenced by news events, regulatory developments, or influencer comments. Elon Musk, the owner of X, the social media platform, has been sued on allegations that the billionaire deliberately conducted a pump-and-dump scheme, manipulating Dogecoin (DOGE) prices and profiting at the expense of others.

    SEC Likely To Approve The First Spot Bitcoin ETF In The US

    Google Trends is one of the tools users can use to gauge crypto sentiment. However, looking at events in the United States, interest in BTC is yearly low. This is despite the community expecting the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to approve the first spot Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF). 

    After several attempts in the past, analysts have been gradually increasing the odds of the strict regulator green-lighting the first Bitcoin ETF in Q4 2023 or early 2023. Still, it needs to be clarified whether the agency will authorize one or multiple products simultaneously. If the SEC disapproves a Bitcoin ETF, JPMorgan analysts led by Nikolaos Panigirtzoglou said the agency could face “legal troubles.”

    In anticipation of the product and ahead of Bitcoin halving in 2024, the coin recently broke above July 2023 highs, registering a new 2023 high above $35,000. Though prices have been steadying, the uptrend remains, and traders expect more gains.

    Halloween is right around the corner and people are thinking about what are they doing for the weekend and what are they doing for Halloween night.  Stay home, stay home and give out candy, go out in a costume, buy a $3 black mask and call it a day.? Decisions and stress.

    Most US adults will not be dressing up based on data from the latest Yahoo/YouGov poll. The  poll unmasked 22% are opting to dress up for the spooky holiday but a whoping 63% have chosen to skip out this season while 14% haven’t decided one way or another.  Depending on what you like to do, one side is wrong.  For those who do like to dress up, Google could help pick a halloween costume.

    Google Trends set up a spooky page called “Frightgeist” showing the most popular costumes and the most popular in each state. There are different sections, including a map of the U.S. highlighting the most searched costumes per state and an option to search for a costume according to your own personal preferences.

    According to the poll a slight smaller percentage will be making their costumes as opposed to buying (hello Amazon!).  A small group are having someone else make their outfit for them, while another are bringing back an existing one from their own closet.

    And another group is still undecided. Here are some of the most popular Halloween costumes for you to consider

    Barbie

    The blockbuster movie lives on in a variety of ways – especially the top choice in this year’s costume. Folks can’t get Kenough of Barbie and why not have recreate the movie with Barbie costumes.

    SpiderMan

    Superheros reign as a top costume and Spiderman wins out.  It could be it is an easy costume.  The gays love it for some reason and truly focus on Spidey being the sexist hero.  Superman and Batman come up behind him.

    Princess

    Princesses were long the king (or queen) of Halloween until they were surpassed by superheroes.  People of all ages still love the costume which ranks in the top 5 of costume every year.  Easy and you can’t go wrong and who doesn’t want to be a princess or prince for the day?

    Witch costumes are a classic, easy to  make and are part of the lore of Halloween. Ironically, the first known witch’s outfit is nudity — as in, no clothes at all — which was depicted in paintings. But years later, the look evolved due to political allegiances, Hollywood’s spin on these magical being have gone from Hocus Pocus to Bewitched, so you have a wide range in your selections.

    In 2015, costume manufacturer Rubie’s Costume Company developed a line of inflatable dinosaur costumes as a merchandise tie-in to Jurassic World. Rubie’s T. rex costume, with a comically large wobbling head, gained popularity in pranks, visual gags, and as an internet meme. Might be a little large for crowded parties, but people will roar at your success.

    Lastly, from Dallas to West Hollywood to Toronto there is the overtly sexy costume. The revealing Halloween costume arrived in a two-wave movement- — first in the 1970s after the sexual revolution and the other took place in the early 2000s, after pivotal films were released which portraying mostly women embracing the sexy Halloween costumes. In West Hollywood, a large portion of the guy’s costumes are underwear which show they are a cop, a superhero, a cowboy, etc.
