Here’s Why Callaway Is Headed Back To The PGA Show

After skipping the annual PGA Merchandise Show a year ago along with a number of other big-name golf equipment manufacturers (TaylorMade, Titleist and Wilson among them), Callaway is headed back in January 2023 — and beyond.
But the company’s new multi-year participation agreement runs far deeper than Callaway’s golf clubs and golf balls.
The return ties in to the corporate name change in August that led the portfolio of brands to be called Topgolf Callaway Brands. That re-branding was an effort to reflect both the strong heritage business (Callaway) and build awareness for a strategic shift focused on new ventures in the “modern golf” and active lifestyle segments. The company even changed its ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange to “MODG” from “ELY,” which was a nod to founder Ely Callaway.
Central to the company’s return to the PGA Show is a new brand educational experience, an activation that showcases its industry-leading Toptracer range technology and focuses on PGA Members’ education. Toptracer is in more than 15,000 bays in 32 countries.

Ireland’s Seamus Power enjoyed another six-under 65 to share the lead with Ben Griffin at the Bermuda Championship on Saturday.
The Waterford native struck with some late birdies for another round of six-under to head into Sunday’s final round level with American Ben Griffin on 18 under.
The 35-year-old Irishman is no stranger to windy conditions having played at the tournament the last few years.
He sealed his spot on the top of the board late in the third round, which started out with four straight birdies.
Further birdies followed on 11, 16 and 17, with a double bogey on the par-three 13th the only blemish on his round.
“I knew I had to get birdies before 11,” Power said. “I don’t know how comfortable you get when you get to 16 and you’re having to aim your ball in the ocean.”
Power has one PGA Tour victory, the Barbasol Championship in Kentucky last year. He would love nothing more than a win for a strong early start to the PGA Tour and to assure his spot at The Masters.
Griffin gave up on the game a few years ago before making a comeback
Griffin, who was previously working as a loan mortgage officer, earned his full card onto the PGA Tour last year.
“It’s been surreal really the last year and two months of just being comfortable on the golf course and just going out and trying to win,” Griffin said.
“When you’re playing mini-tour events and you’re trying to grind for top 10 just to break even, just have enough money to maybe do a Monday qualifier, it’s not necessarily the easiest in terms.
“Now that I have this little bit of freedom, I can go out there and just try to win golf tournaments.”
Australia’s Aaron Baddeley and Kevin Yu of Taipei are two shots back at 16-under, with another American, Brian Gay, alone in fifth place on 15-under following a third straight 66.
Overnight leader Ben Crane struggled in round three, with four birdies and six bogeys in a two-over 73 and he now sits in joint ninth, six shots off the pace.

LIV Golf members are still currently able to compete on the DP World Tour and earn Ryder Cup qualification points, although it remains unclear whether they will be allowed to feature at Marco Simone GC next September.
McIlroy said in an interview with the Guardian he felt “betrayal” from his Ryder Cup team-mates joining the Saudi-backed circuit and questioned their commitment towards Team Europe, while Poulter remains adamant his love for the biennial contest remains as strong as ever.

Five of Europe’s team beaten by a record-breaking margin at Whistling Straits last September have already joined LIV Golf, including Poulter, record points scorer Sergio Garcia and Ryder Cup stalwart Lee Westwood.

Smith to face Mickelson in Team Championship
The draw was made for LIV Golf’s Team Championship on Wednesday, with captains from teams ranked fifth to eighth in the season-long standings getting to pick their opponents for Friday’s opening round.
Six-time major winner Mickelson will take on reigning Open Champion Cameron Smith as one of the day’s featured singles matches, which will also pit top Chilean pro Joaquin Niemann against former world No 1 Martin Kaymer.

Rory McIlroy will move back to world No 1 for the first time since 2020 after completing an impressive title defence at the CJ Cup in South Carolina.
McIlroy carded a brilliant four-under 67 on the final day at Congaree Golf Club, with four birdies in a five-hole stretch on his back nine helping him pull clear of the chasing pack.
The four-time major champion finished a shot clear of playing partner Kurt Kitayama, despite bogeying his final two holes, with KH Lee claiming third spot ahead of Jon Rahm and Tommy Fleetwood.
McIlroy had already won the RBC Canadian Open and the Tour Championship during an impressive 2022
McIlroy’s third win of the year and 23rd PGA Tour title sees him become the first FedExCup champion to begin his PGA Tour season with a victory since Tiger Woods in 2008, with his latest success also leapfrogging him above Scottie Scheffler at the top of the world rankings.

Ko returns to country of her birth to win BMW Ladies

WONJU, South Korea — Lydia Ko won her 18th career title in the country of her birth after completing a 7-under 65 final round at the BMW Ladies Championship on Sunday.
Ko finished the South Korea-based tournament with a 21 under 267, four strokes ahead of Andrea Lee, who had a final round of 3 under 69.
“This is probably the best I’ve played, the most consistently I’ve played,” Ko said.
“I played the back nine really well in all four of my rounds, and I think that was the big key for me.”
Ko slipped to 15 under when she had a bogey at the No. 7 before firing in six birdies to leave the rest of the pack behind.
“Every time I come back to Korea, even though I play under the New Zealand flag, so many people support me … I think that is such a boost,” Ko said.
There was a three-way tie for third place with Hye-Jin Choi, Hyo Joo Kim and Lilia Vu all ending up at 16-under 272.
Atthaya Thitikul, who carded a tournament record 9 under 63 on the first day, ended up fourth following a disappointing round of 2 over 74 on Sunday with five bogeys and only three birdies.

Islam Makhachev pulled off a submission win over Charles Oliveira to win the lightweight title and Aljamain Sterling beat TJ Dillashaw by TKO to claim the bantamweight belt at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi on Saturday.
Makhachev capped his ascent to the lightweight throne with a win by arm triangle choke against Brazilian Oliveira, the holder of the UFC record for submission wins with 16.
Oliveira was stripped of the lightweight belt in May when he missed the weight for his title clash with Justin Gaethje and though he beat the American the title remained vacant, setting up the showdown with Russian Makhachev.
After spending much of the first round defending and trying to threaten with submissions off his back, Oliveira tried to keep the fight on the feet in the second round.
That tactic looked like it was paying off until he was decked by a punch from Makhachev, who wasted no time jumping on his opponent, locking in the choke and forcing the tap for Oliveira.
Makhachev dedicated the win to his late coach Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who died in 2020, saying: “Many years ago he told me just train hard and I will be champion”,
He then handed the belt to Khabib Nurmagomedov, who took over from his father as the Russian’s coach and is himself a former UFC lightweight champion.
Makhachev’s 11th submission win moves the 31-year-old to a record of 23 wins and one loss as a pro.
In the co-main event TJ Dillashaw, who had to give up the belt and serve a two-year suspension after testing positive for EPO in 2019, suffered a dislocated shoulder early in the first round but somehow made it through the first frame.
Reigning champion Aljamain Sterling did not let up and Dillashaw’s shoulder popped out again in the second round, allowing the 33-year-old Jamaican-American to take him down and dominate him until referee Mark Goddard called a halt.
“I probably popped it out about 20 times in training camp… I told the ref in the back that my shoulder is probably going to pop out, we’ll put it back so if it does don’t stop [the fight],” American Dillashaw said in his post-fight interview.
In the main card’s other big fight, American Sean O’Malley won a close split decision over Russian Petr Yan after a three-round brawl to put himself in pole position for a shot at the bantamweight title.

Jon Rahm roars into share of lead at CJ Cup with 62

RIDGELAND, S.C. — Jon Rahm thought his 7-iron from 195 yards had come up well short of the pin because of a long shadow across the green. Moments later, he heard the crowd react to a shot that came an inch from going in on the hardest hole at Congaree.
The way his day went, Rahm should have expected that.
He found the middle of the clubface on just about every shot and put on an exhibition Friday at the CJ Cup in South Carolina, making 10 birdies in his round of 9-under 62 that gave him a share of the lead with Kurt Kitayama.
Coming off a victory two weeks ago in the Spanish Open, Rahm hardly looked like a player who is easing his way toward the end of the year.
He ran off four straight birdies on the front nine, all of them inside 10 feet. He holed a bunker shot from 60 feet on the par-4 eighth, made a 35-footer on the par-3 10th and then capped off three straight birdies with his shot into the 17th that grazed the edge of the cup. Only four other players made birdie on that hole in the second round.
So good was this round he mentioned two swings in particular that felt perfect, and those were two he didn’t convert for birdie.
“It was a lot of good out there today,” he said.
Needing one last birdie for his career-low round, Rahm’s wedge into the 18th rolled off a steep slope and came to rest against a bunker rake. His pitch was strong, rolling 30 feet by and he made his lone bogey.
Kitayama, the 29-year-old Californian who spent his first six years on the Asian and European tours, holed a tough bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 12th for a 65 and joined Rahm at 11-under 131.
Aaron Wise spent time on a putting drill after his opening round and it paid off for him in his round of 66. He was two back, along with Cam Davis (66). Rory McIlroy (67) was two strokes behind the leaders at 9 under.
Tom Kim, going for his third PGA Tour victory in his last six stars, was hanging with McIlroy until a late bogey dropped him into a tie for sixth, four shots behind. McIlroy birdied the 18th to cap off a 30 on the back nine.
McIlroy, the defending champion who can get to No. 1 if he wins, was more worried about what Rahm was doing in the group ahead of him.
“I was trying to hang on to Rahm’s coattails,” McIlroy said.
He was an example of how it doesn’t take much to get out of position at Congaree, a fast course with severe slopes around the edges of the green. McIlroy short-sided himself twice, and while he wasn’t off line by much, it was enough to cost him two shots on the front nine.
And then he holed a 30-foot putt at the par-3 10th and was on his way.
Kitayama played earlier was never too far from the lead until his round took a turn for the best on the par-5 12th hole. He was in the right bunker, a popular place to miss, and thought his ball was running a little hot until it hit the pin and dropped for eagle.
“Went in dead center, so that was good,” Kitayama said.
He added a pair of 10-foot birdie putts late in the round and has a share of the lead going into the weekend for the first time in his short PGA Tour career.
The UNLV grad took a while to get back home — he once played a developmental tour even in Asia where he was paid in cash on the spot after winning — but it couldn’t be a better time. He finished 40th in the FedEx Cup his first year. That means he will be in at least eight of the elevated events next year that offer at least $20 million in prize money.
As late as it is in the year, Rahm is still going strong. The Spanish Open is important to him, and he won it for the third time to tie his national hero, Seve Ballesteros. He still has designs on being Europe’s No. 1 with the DP World Championship next month in Dubai.
And then?
“It’s Thanksgiving, so probably put on a few pounds,” Rahm said. “Not that I need them, but I’m for sure going to be joining that club like everybody else most likely.”

British Gymnastic has launched an action plan to create “safe, positive and fair experiences” for gymnasts
British Gymnastics will name coaches who have been banned as part of a response to an investigation exposing the sport’s abusive culture.
A 40-point “Reform ’25” action plan is intended by the governing body to create “safe, positive and fair experiences” for gymnasts.
It follows more than 400 complaints to the Whyte Review that was published in June and found young gymnasts in Britain had been left humiliated, shamed and permanently psychologically or physically damaged.
A challenge for gymnastics officials is determining the proportionality of sanctions based on the scale of misconduct – from sexual and physical abuse to bullying and malnutrition.
While British Gymnastics will publish lists of banned coaches online, their names will be removed once a punishment has been served.
It leaves open the possibility of coaches returning to the sport with athletes and any guardians never knowing about past misconduct.
British Gymnastics CEO Sarah Powell told Sky News: “I think we would have to be really convinced about why somebody had been banned, and then will come back into the sport. I don’t know until I look at the determinations of those outcomes.”

Coaches who are suspended pending the outcome of an investigation will also not be named – opening up the possibility of them working in other countries in another sport.
The aspiration to improve welfare, safeguarding and complaints is for “zero tolerance of abuse – whether that be emotional, physical or sexual” and more specialist staff to handle complaints.
On the education priorities, Reform ’25 highlights the need for “a cultural understanding that creating a fear of coaches has no place in gymnastics”.
There are concerns that British sport has developed a medals over morals culture, but the action plan states there should be a “recognition that striving for and achieving success is not the same thing as wellbeing”.
British Gymnastics wants the reforms implemented by 2025 – a year after the next Olympics in Paris – but with regular progress updates on the progress in improving the environment that is focused on high-performance while eradicating risks.
Powell said: “The key for us is to make sure that those who’ve been affected, we acknowledge the failings of the past, and we make sure we set out a new direction for the future.
“The reforms that we’re putting in place today will ensure that this sport can be a safe, positive experience for all involved.”
