    The Golden Gate Casino marked its 120th anniversary this month, reaching a milestone as the oldest continuously operating hotel and casino in Las Vegas while undergoing a significant shift in its gaming operations. Founded in 1906 as the Hotel Nevada, the property celebrated its history with events that highlighted its role as the city’s first permanent hotel.

    The anniversary follows a major operational transition completed in late 2025. Golden Gate Casino has removed all live dealer table games from its floor, replacing them with electronic table games and digital interfaces. This change was spearheaded by owner Derek Stevens, who also operates The D Las Vegas and Circa Resort and Casino. Stevens noted that the move to a fully electronic gaming floor was driven by evolving customer preferences and the success of similar digital formats at his other properties.

    Despite the modernization of the gaming floor, the property maintains several physical links to its 1906 origins. The building still features the original ten guest rooms, which remain part of the hotel inventory. These rooms were known for being among the first in the city to offer indoor plumbing and steam heat. Other historical elements, such as the original second story windows and exposed brickwork from the early 20th century, have been preserved through various renovations.

    The Golden Gate Casino has a history of pioneering developments in downtown Las Vegas. It was the site of the city’s first telephone and displayed the second neon sign in the area. In more recent years, it was known for introducing dancing dealers, a concept that has now been phased out in favor of the new electronic pit.

    Management indicated that the shift to electronic gaming has seen positive financial results, with revenues reportedly exceeding initial projections. To coincide with the anniversary and the operational changes, the casino launched a new marketing campaign called The Night Starts Here, which includes a daily happy hour and promotional giveaways.

    The 120 year celebration included a public event on Friday where guests received commemorative merchandise and birthday shots. Industry representatives noted that the Golden Gate Casino remains a unique fixture in the downtown landscape, balancing its status as a historic landmark with the technological trends of the modern gaming industry.

    A fallen hiker clung onto a gravel rock face in California as rescuers swooped in with a helicopter to save him, dramatic video shows.

    Other people in the recreation area spotted the man and heard him yelling for help in the Alexander Battery area in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said on Instagram Sunday, March 31. It was dark on the cliffside when rescuers arrived just before 8 p.m. and located him using the helicopter’s thermal imaging camera, officials said.

    Video shows the view from the thermal imaging camera and then switches to the rescuer’s point of view. The helicopter shines a spotlight near the hiker clinging to the cliff as ocean waves crash just below.

    The hiker was about 50 to 60 feet below the trail — hanging on for dear life, the video shows.

    The helicopter landed nearby, and a tactical flight officer lowered down to the hiker to help him get into a rescue device, officials said.

    “Don’t let go!” the rescuer says repeatedly to the hiker as he lands near him on the cliff. The rescuer carefully guides the hiker’s hands through a sling, one at a time.

    “I got you, brother,” he says as the helicopter lifts them off the cliff and flies them on a long line up to the top, where a rescue team is waiting.

    Several people commented about how intense the rescue was, with some mentioning they even held their breath.

    “That was terrifying. I barely breathed until I heard the three words, ‘I’ve got you,’” someone said on Instagram.

    The Christmas season may be the most wonderful time of the year, but it will also the time for the Golden Gate Casino on Fremont Street to shut down for a week. The down town landmark will temporarily shut down this month for renovations before welcoming guests again just in time for the holidays.

    Golden Gate Casino has announced the closure will run from December 18th through the 22nd in order to replace some carpeting. Not only that, but the resorts website seems to indicate that there is “No room at the Inn” (so to speak) from the 17th of this month all the way until the 27th.

    However, when they do reopen they will be celebrating with what’s being called an “open bar bash” from 6 to 8pm on December 23rd, as well as their annual Santa’s Helper contest. The property is owned by Circa Hospitality Group, which also runs Circa and The D.

    At over 115 years old, the Golden Gate Casino is easily the oldest casino on Fremont Street and all of downtown Las Vegas. So, perhaps it was time to change the carpeting. Let’s just hope they don’t find the remains of Jimmy Hoffa under the rugs.
