Actress Jane Lynch will be in Montgomery County, Maryland, the last weekend of November for what she calls a “musical Christmas extravaganza.”

Bringing Christmas cheer is just one of Lynch’s many talents. Her resume is as versatile as it gets: TV, movies, Broadway, live comedy, game show host, voice acting, author and playwright.

On Nov. 29, “A Swingin’ Little Christmas” comes to the Music Center at Strathmore in North Bethesda, Maryland, a venue the actress holds in high regard.

“I think it’s the most gorgeous theater we’ve ever performed in and the nicest people,” Lynch told WTOP this week.

As for the show, Lynch said it features “Christmas songs that you know and love in a late ’50s, early ’60s style like Frank Sinatra and Andy Williams.”

Lynch and her friends have been doing some version of this show for 10 years, after recording a Christmas album in 2016, called “Swingin’ Little Christmas.”

It’s the second year in a row the holiday performance is coming to the Strathmore.

“Your toes will be tapping, your heart will be full of love, we can’t wait to come back,” Lynch said.

For more than 35 years, Lynch has been stealing scenes in movies like “The 40-Year-Old Virgin” and “Best in Show” as well as TV shows like “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” and “Only Murders in the Building.”

She’s perhaps best known for her portrayal of cheerleading coach Sue Sylvester on the TV show “Glee” from 2009 to 2015, for which she won several awards, including a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe.

At Strathmore, Lynch with be accompanied by Kate Flannery, Tim Davis and The Tony Guerrero Quintet.

Flannery, who played Meredith Palmer in “The Office,” and Lynch go way back.

“She’s been my friend forever and we’ve been singing together for almost forever,” Lynch said. “Kate Flannery is a live wire.”

Davis, the vocal arranger on “Glee,” also arranged the vocals for the Christmas show.

“We sing very tight three-part harmonies,” Lynch said. “Musically, as far as I’m concerned, it’s a delight, it’s really, really wonderful and, of course, there’s jokes and buffooneries that abound.”

As for the music, Lynch said The Tony Guerrero Quintet “almost sounds like a ‘big band,’ that’s how good the band is.”

Strathmore is the first of 14 stops on this tour, which culminates Dec. 17 in Santa Monica, California, close to Lynch’s home in Los Angeles.

“It’s the greatest way to start the holidays, it’s the highlight of my year and I think I can speak for everybody, we look forward to this every year and we’re so glad to be starting at Strathmore,” Lynch told WTOP. “It’s such a great place and the audience was wonderful too.”

Limited tickets are available on Strathmore’s website. The “Swingin’ Little Christmas” album is available on Amazon and iTunes.

  • MOVIE LIST: Movie Anniversaries to Make You Feel Old

MOVIE LIST: Movie Anniversaries to Make You Feel Old

In an era where everything old is new again, millennial nostalgia has reached fever pitch. Everything is a reboot or a remake or a rehash these days — from films like

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and Mean Girls:The Musical to shows like High School Musical The Musical The Series (which catapulted Olivia Rodrigo to fame).

Yes, IP is king, and Hollywood runs on sure bets. But also, we can’t overlook the power of a heartthrob to shape culture. And the particular brand of nostalgia I’m feeling is totally fueled by the unexpected comebacks of two early 2000s heartthrobs: Zac Efron and Chad Michael Murray.

Efron had a surprising summer Netflix hit in his turn as a reformed celebrity playboy in
A Family Affair. Yes, the film stars Nicole Kidman — who’s in another age-gap romance this year Babygirl, alongside Efron’s former costar Harris Dickinson. But the most headline-worthy thing about the film was the press tour. Fueled by costar Joey King’s own memories of being a High School Musical and Hairspray fan, Efron took fans through a highlight reel of his finest moments.

From reaction videos of his most iconic scenes to brand-new revelations about decade-old performances, it was refreshing to hear Efron’s perspective. After distancing himself from the Disney bubble, Efron barely talks about his days as a teen dreamboat. But we haven’t forgotten. So this influx of information was a welcome change — and oh my god, the lore was better than I could have imagined.

@much #ZacEfron rewatching and reacting to ‘High School Musical’ is so wholesome 😭 Via: @Vanity Fair ♬ original sound – MuchMusic

Efron spent a lot of time reminiscing on his breakout role in the Disney Channel Original Movie
High School Musical. From revealing that the “Getcha Head In The Game” dance number (basketball shots and all) was filmed in one take to shouting out his castmates and saying he’s up for a reunion, it was everything I never knew I needed. The most rousing revelation was when he casually dropped the fact that his most memorable — and most memed — performance of “Bet On It” in High School Musical 2 was entirely improvised.

@netflix joey king loves high school musical-era zac efron? bet on it #AFamilyAffair ♬ original sound – Netflix

Fans reeled at the tsunami of tea. What do you mean that every perfectly executed moment of angst in that video was improvised? Pure genius. Virtuosic commitment to the bit. “Give Zac Efron a Retroactive Oscar,” exclaimed
The Cut. And I agree. I’ve been saying that Zac Efron needs his flowers for years. He’s our generation’s McConaughey. And he’s finally getting his due — especially since his role in The Iron Claw last year, alongside Jeremy Allen White and Harris Dickinson. With upcoming projects on the way, he’s in a verifiable career resurgence.

But he’s not the only one of my teenage crushes experiencing a second act to their career.

Chad Michael Murray, the brooding heartthrob who filled every millennial girl’s dreams during his time on
One Tree Hill, has been staging a comeback of his own. While promoting his latest projects — Mother of the Bride, along with the new steamy CW series Sullivan’s Crossing — he’s been doing interviews, appearing on podcasts, and making TikToks to fuel our nostalgia — and it’s working.

For the past few years, Murray’s been popping up in the most random media. He did a stint on
Riverdale as a hot cult leader (I would have fallen for it too). He did a couple of Hallmark movies. But now he’s back in the mainstream and digging into this nostalgia hole alongside us.

    As he prepares to film
Freaky Friday 2 — a sequel to the 21-year-old Lindsay Lohan flick, which is in turn a remake of the original-original 1976 Freaky Friday that starred Jodi Foster! — we’re eating it up. It’s 20+ years since the original, so Murray’s celebrating by spilling the tea on some of his best roles. He’s also been reciting some of his most memorable lines to melt fans’ hearts.

But along with the lore, there’s gossip galore. In hindsight, some facts about backstage beef and our faves feuding have emerged. But they don’t cloud our visions of those iconic millennial dramas — honestly, the smell of drama just makes me more intrigued.

The headline? Chad Michael Murray found himself in the middle of a love triangle between Lindsay Lohan, Hillary Duff, and Aaron Carter. Carter dumped Duff for Lohan in a move that’s reminiscent of the
Olivia Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter drama.

Here’s where it gets interesting. Murray worked with Lohan on
Freaky Friday the year before A Cinderella Story. As a co-star to both starlets, he became a conduit for chaos. Long story short, they both gossiped about each other in the press — a 2000s version of subtweets or Twitter beef — and Duff barred Lohan from the A Cinderella Story premiere. Here’s hoping Duff will make it to the Freaky Friday 2 premiere.

But it’s not just the stars who are feeling this nostalgia wave. The reunions and comebacks have created a strange new reality where millennials are simultaneously reliving their youth
and facing their mortality. This nostalgia boom has led to some unexpected trends in the world of fashion and pop culture. Low-rise jeans are fully back and other millennial memories are being resurrected in front of them by Gen Z — raising questions about whether we’re moving forward or simply stuck in a Y2K time loop.

The resurgence of these millennial icons, combined with the run of reunion tours sweeping the nation, has created a perfect storm of nostalgia that’s hitting millennials harder than the realization that “10 years ago” is no longer the 90s. Take the reunion of the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus being crowned a Disney legend, and even
Justin Bieber having a baby. Everything’s a reminder that our favorite childhood stars are old now — and we are too.

The resurrection of these cultural touchstones has sparked a new phenomenon: nostalgia whiplash. One minute, you’re belting out “Breaking Free” in your car, feeling like you’re 16 again. The next, you’re googling “Zac Efron age” and having an existential crisis when you realize he’s old enough to play the dad in movies. It’s like emotional time travel if time travel leaves you with a slight hangover and the realization that you can’t stay out as late as you used to.

And with time, secrets often emerge. Like how when Britpop icons Oasis announced their reunion, fans took a trip down memory lane to revisit the best and worst of the Britpop/hard rock band. With time, the good seems better, and the bad just gives it layers.

There’s no show that epitomizes this more than
Glee. For better or for worse, Ryan Murphy changed the television landscape with this one. By making a show entirely about outsiders — namely putting queer people front and center for the first time — he was a pioneer of representation. But Glee didn’t birth a legion of gleeks for no reason — that chaotic, cursed show had a profound impact on us. Can you believe the first episode premiered 15 years ago?

It’s been 15 years since “Don’t Stop Believing” got an update, since a whole new generation of these kids were indoctrinated into loving the musical
Funny Girl (guilty), and the world met Lea Michele. But the past 15 years haven’t been easy. The Glee curse is just about as tragic as the Kennedy family curse.

Stars of the show — Corey Monteith, Naya Rivera, and Mark Salling — have died. Members of the crew have also been victims of the
Glee curse, including assistant director Jim Fuller, who died of a heart attack; production assistant Nancy Motes, who died by suicide; and Matthew Morrison’s stand-in Mark Watson, who died from a “car fire.”

    Plus, shows like
The Price of Glee and Quiet on Set have revealed the dark truths behind some of our cherished childhood shows. That’s the price of getting older: seeing the hard truths beneath the rosy veneer.

Yet, for all the existential crises and surreal moments, there’s something undeniably comforting about this latest wave of nostalgia. In a world that often feels chaotic and unpredictable, there’s solace to be found in the familiar chords of a Jonas Brothers song or still saying, “they did this on
Glee” whenever you’re at a bar and a classic rock song plays.

I often wish it could just be 2008 again, the year
High School Musical 3 and Twilight both came out in theaters. Or better yet, Summer of 2007, when High School Musical 2 premiered on the same night as the first episode of Phineas and Ferb and the Hannah Montana Episode “Me and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas and Mr. Jonas” — the epic Disney Channel crossover that inspired the best Jonas Brother song, “Lovebug.” That just might have been the best night of my life.

But now I’m here: slathering on anti-aging treatments, considering “preventative” Botox, and checking my 401K balance. If you want to feel even older, here are some of our other teen media favorites that are having
    Significant Anniversaries this year:

    1. A Cinderella Story (20th Anniversary)

Remember when we thought AOL Instant Messenger was the height of romance? Oh, to text Austin Ames “LOL” over AIM. Now we’re getting ghosted on the apps and no amount of fairy godmother magic can fix our dating lives.

This flick sold us the lie that the hot quarterback was secretly a sensitive poet who’d fall for the quirky outsider. A classic tale for rom-coms but this is arguably one of the best that’s ever been executed. No Cinderella adaptation has come close to this one. Especially not
Another Cinderella Story with Selena Gomez — though “Tell Me Something I Don’t Know” was a banger. With a new Freaky Friday in the works, I’m hoping this Chad Michael Murray flick will also get its remake.

    https://www.tiktok.com/@entertainmenttonight/video/7367064189417917726

    2. Glee (15th Anniversary of Premiere)

I’ll never forgive Ryan Murphy for giving theater kids a platform …yet they can never make me hate
Glee. Cast feuds, diva drama, and rumors of on-set fights just add to the allure of the drama. Glee is the reason TV went from High School Musical to an even more musical high school and then further onto musical college, like Pitch Perfect. But I can still sing every Mercedes harmony in the Glee soundtrack.

Yes, age has taught me that Mr. Schue was kind of a creepy man-child with a vest fetish who lived vicariously through his students — why were his students the only people at his wedding??? And though
Rachel Berry was supposed to be the protagonist, we realized that being a diva doesn’t get you ahead in life. It only makes everyone hate you at the office Christmas party.

Yet, there’ll never be anything like belting the
Glee version of “Don’t Stop Believing” — or better yet, Jonathan Groff’s rendition of “Bohemian Rhapsody.”

    3. Mean Girls (20 years)

fetch happened. The movie is a hallmark of millennial nostalgia, with quotes so insidious they worked their way into memes and lexicons alike. Tina Fey’s magnum opus about teenage cruelty gave us unforgettable quips and unrealistic expectations of high school hotness. Two decades later, the remake they made for Gen Z starring Renee Rapp, frankly, doesn’t come close to the original. I cherish the Lohan version even more now that I’ve seen what a trainwreck the second version is. The limits of our obsession does not exist, apparently.

    4. Napoleon Dynamite (20 years)

Remember when random equaled funny? This indie darling made awkward cool in peak millennial humor. Nothing about this movie would fly anymore. Gen Zs probably cringe at our love for it. But when it was good, it was very-very good.. We quoted it ad nauseam, wore “Vote for Pedro” shirts unironically, and thought “ligers” were a laugh riot. Every year, more than one person donned a Napolean wig, glasses, and a “Vote For Pedro” shirt and did that dance sequence in my high school talent show. That experience can never be replicated by TikTok dances or Netflix films.

    5. Saw (20 years)

Nothing says millennial childhood quite like a sadistic puppet forcing people into elaborate death traps. This torture porn franchise kickstarted our generation’s fascination with escape rooms and moral dilemmas. Now we’re too anxious to watch anything more intense than “Great British Bake Off.” How the mighty have fallen.

    6. The Notebook (20 years)

    The fact that
The Notebook was 20 years ago is a testament to Ryan Gosling. He’s still managed to be relevant to the zeitgeist and one of the least awful men in Hollywood. From playing our dear Noah in this Nicholas Sparks masterpiece to playing Ken in Barbie, he is always in our hearts. In the words of Glenn Powell, “Gosling is a legend.” Cut to 2024, and we’re swiping through dating apps, wondering why our Hinge matches don’t build our houses or write us 365 letters. But we can still dream.

    7. Anchorman (20 years)

    Is
Anchorman the boy equivalent of Mean Girls? Every non-funny man I’ve ever met thinks “Stay Classy” is a hilarious quote and witty reference. And who can blame them? At the time, Anchorman was the peak of comedy. We laughed our asses off at Ron Burgundy’s chauvinistic antics. But still liking this movie is a red flag — it’s a sign that a person’s sense of humor might not have matured beyond age 15.

    8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (20 years)

The way stills of this movie haunted Tumblr should be examined. Pink and blue-haired Kate Winslet is admittedly still on my winter mood boards. This film was an episode of
Black Mirror before Black Mirror. For a film about erasing our exes from our brains, it sure felt romantic at the time. Two decades later, we’re still trying to Marie Kondo our emotional baggage while stalking our high school crushes on Facebook. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet’s mind-bending romance feels more like an indie fever dream with each passing year.

    9. Spider-Man 2 (20 years)

    Have you heard about the
Spiderman to tennis movie pipeline? Kirsten Dunst doing Wimbledon, Emma Stone doing Battle of the Sexes and Zendaya doing Challengers — I might venture to say these are the finest things to come out of the Spiderman franchise. But I have to admit, the Tobey Maguire version is a classic. The fact that we’ve been through Andrew Garfield and Tom Holland as Spiderman, plus the Spiderverse series — in the past twenty years! — is mind-boggling to me.

  • Is Travis Kelce The First Nepo Boyfriend?

Is Travis Kelce The First Nepo Boyfriend?

Nepotism – noun – the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives, friends, or associates, especially by gifting them jobs.

    Before
Taylor Swift, Travis Kelce was a superstar in the NFL world. The go-to tight end on the Patrick Mahomes-led Kansas City Chiefs, the most recent dominating football franchise since Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

And sure, Travis Kelce is a nine time Pro Bowler and seven time All-Pro selection with four of those being first team nods. He
may hold the record for most consecutive and overall seasons with 1000 receiving yards (seven seasons strong)…but what the heck does Travis Kelce know about acting?

Reports indicate that Travis Kelce will be acting in none other than a Ryan Murphy original. Yes,
that Ryan Murphy – the creator of shows like American Horror Story, Dahmer, and Glee…The Ryan Murphy who has 38 Primetime Emmy noms (and six wins), two Grammy’s and a Tony just cast football professional and boyfriend of Taylor Swift in a scripted television series.

Which TV Show Is Travis Kelce Starring In?

    The show is called
Grotesquerie, and will also star Niecy Nash-Betts(who previously worked with Murphy on Dahmer) and Courtney B. Vance (who you may recognize from Murphy’s American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson).

Nash-Betts confirmed the news in an Instagram shortly after
People reported Travis Kelce’s premier acting endeavor. She says,

“Guys, guess who I am working with on
Grotesquerie?” the actress teased before showing Kelce, who said, “Jumping into new territory with Niecy!”

Judging by the teaser Ryan Murphy shared, a phone call from Niecey Nash warns of something bad happening that only her character can see.

And while Ryan Murphy has a habit of including unlikely stars in his shows (think Kim Kardashian in
AHS), Travis Kelce’s inclusion begs a bigger question:

Is Trav the world’s first nepo boyfriend?

    After the
nepotism baby exposure that led countless celebrities to unnecessarily defend their names, we learned a ton about the state of the industry. Publications like Rolling Stone are riddled with nepo babies whose famed parents landed them the internship. Your favorite actor, singer, model, etc. is most likely a descendant of your mom’s favorite actor, singer, or model.

But the thing is, we already
know that Kate Hudson is Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn’s kid. We know Lily Rose Depp’s parents…and the Jenners…and Angelina Jolie…and Miley Cyrus…I could go on. The point is, we didn’t care.

In today’s entertainment industry, it’s hard
not to find a nepo baby. But as long as they’re good at what they choose to do, no one cares. Which is why I worry for Travis Kelce.

Travis is the face of brand deals galore. Especially since his
New Heights podcast (alongside his brother and fellow NFL icon, Jason Kelce) is the hottest sports podcast on socials right now. Dating Taylor Swift may have been the best thing to happen to the Travis Kelce brand in general, because now he gets to go beyond sports and into bigger realms.

The 34-year-old KC Chiefs’ tight end’s previous TV endeavors include a cringe-worthy dating show called
Catching Kelce and hosting Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?

So, yes, the question must be raised: can Travis even act? If we’re being completely honest, I can’t guarantee that answer. Murphy has a way of making any non-actor
(see: Kardashian) into a passable star with camp lines and witty delivery…but I’m worried about Kelce.

Let’s all admit that when he began dating Swift, Travis Kelce got catapulted into superstardom as the
First Boyfriend of The Era’s Tour… But have we taken it too far by launching an acting career? Is there a time when we should stay in our respective lanes?

I’m all for Travis getting the recognition he deserves..and I think the Kelces are
our Royal Family…but I’d rather see a Keeping Up With The Kelces moment than watch Travis potentially fail at acting.

What would make sense? Travis Kelce in couture runway settings, or collaborating with high fashion brands to create exclusive lines. Travis and his family having their own reality show. Expanding their football empire in a number of ways.

What doesn’t really make sense? Casting Travis in Ryan Murphy’s Grotesquerie…but you bet I’ll be tuning in anyway.

  • Best LGBTQ Couples in Film and TV

Best LGBTQ Couples in Film and TV

The first gay couple ever to appear on American television dates back to 1975 — in Norman Lear’s groundbreaking and highly controversial sitcom Hot I Baltimore.

Back then, featuring an LGBTQ+ couple on national TV was considered horrifying, even shameful. Although it’s far more common nowadays to see LGBTQ+ characters represented in film and television, we still have a long way to go.

These days, we’re lucky to have such a diverse array of incredible gay and lesbian couples gracing our screens, both big and small. Let’s take a look at some of the most fabulous same-sex pairings represented in the media over the years.

Jack and Ennis – Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain was one of the first same-sex romance films to make it to the mainstream media. Back when the movie was in production, A-list celebrities turned down the leading roles of Jack and Ennis right and left. Back then, the idea of a gay gay love story was so taboo in Hollywood that actors like Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Wahlberg were quick to say “no” because they were terrified that the world would think they were gay and their career would be over.

It looks like it was their loss, though, since the 2005 film was an Oscar-winning triumph. The roles were given to Jake Gyllenhall and Heath Ledger, respectively. Gyllenhall and Ledger play Wyoming cowboys caught up in a 20-year-long forbidden romance.

Despite their undying love for each other — Jack famously tells Ennis, “I wish I knew how to quit you!” — they’re held back by spousal duties and the restrictive social norms of the time.

    Ronit and Esti – Disobedience

Rachel McAdams and Rachel Weisz play forbidden lovers in this gut wrenching 2018 film. Esti (McAdams) and Ronit (Weisz) seem to have all the odds stacked against them. Set in an Orthodox Jewish community, the highly religious standards make it just about impossible for the two to express their passions. But gloriously, they find a way.

In private, when no one’s watching, Esti and Ronit are able to act on their years of pent-up emotions.

Grab a box of tissues for this one. Disobedience is a total tear-jerker.

    Carol and Therese – Carol

This 2015 film captures the sizzling love affair between Therese (Rooney Mara) and Carol (Cate Blanchette.) While the film is a stunning visual masterpiece, the snowy Manhattan backdrop and lush mid-century decor pale in comparison to Mara and Blanchette’s on-screen chemistry. In the film, our leading ladies Therese and Carol must keep their love affair a secret because Carol has a daughter and is going through a tough divorce. Their forbidden romance is constantly disrupted by Carol’s suspicious husband, a private detective, and … you guessed it … the constricting social norms of the 1950s.

Elio and Oliver – Call Me By Your Name

Call Me By Your Name is an exquisite love story that’s set “Somewhere in Northern Italy.” Based on the novel by Andre Aciman, the 2017 film put Timothee Chalamet on the map and launched him into the stratosphere.

What separates Call Me By Your Name from the other films listed is that there’s no bloodthirsty antagonist determined to tear Elio and Oliver apart. In fact, the only people preventing Elio and Oliver from living happily ever after are… Elio and Oliver.

Since there’s no evil force lurking in the corners, Call Me By Your Name unspools like a sun-dappled fantasy. Their romance is met with nothing but support from friends and family.

Due to the film’s lack of obstacles, a handful of critics have labeled this story unrealistic. It doesn’t have the many hurdles that same-sex love interests usually face, both in real life and in media portrayals.

Yet author Aciman says this is very much intentional. Quoting Aristotle, he said of Call Me By Your Name: “Art is not about what happens, but about what should, and ought to happen.”

Nicky Nicholls and Lorna Morello – Orange is The New Black

Orange is The New Black made waves — seismic waves — when it premiered on Netflix in 2013. The series is groundbreaking both for its diversity and its depiction of an array of lesbian relationships.

While Piper and Alex are Orange’s primary couple, many fans found themselves gravitating more towards the second-tier couple, Nicky Nicholls and Lorna Morello.

Played by Natasha Lyonne and Yael Stone, respectively, the frisson between these two is enough to set fire to Litchfield Prison. What starts out as a casual friend-with-benefits deal eventually grows into one of the most heartbreaking romances on television.

    Blaine and Kurt – Glee

Kurt Hummel went through hell and back during the first handful of seasons on Glee. As the only openly gay kid in his closed-minded Ohio-based high school, he bore the brunt of constant torment from his peers.

Just when he was at his lowest point, Blaine (Darren Criss) waltzed in to flip Kurt’s life upside down once and for all. It was a heartwarming change of pace for Kurt, who had spent his whole life on the outside looking in.

    Santana and Brittany – Glee

Initially, Santana and Brittany’s liaison was played off as a joke. But as the series evolved, so did their relationship. The pair went on to become one of the most popular couples on Glee.

Tweek and Craig – South Park

Tweek and Craig, South ParkComedy Central

When we hear the term South Park, the word “progressive” doesn’t immediately spring to mind. After all, the animated series is famous for its shock humor and toilet jokes. This makes it all the more amusing that the Mountain Town series has one of the hottest LGBTQ couples on TV.

The romance between Tweek and Craig was borne out of fan service. Ever since they appeared in a 1998 episode titled “Tweek and Craig,” some starry-eyed fans of the show had been “shipping” these fictional characters.

This did not go unnoticed by creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who decided to respond by making Tweek and Craig a “canon” pair.

Cam and Mitchell – Modern Family

It’s safe to say that Modern Family wouldn’t be the same without Cam and Mitchell. Their comedic charm brings so much wit to the ABC sitcom, and many regard the pair as fan favorites. Despite having conflicting personalities, their differences only seem to strengthen their bond.

Patrick and David – Schitt’s Creek

Schitt’s Creek’s David and Patrick have the perfect relationship. From the beginning, it’s been nothing but smooth sailing for these two. Their lack of drama is quite refreshing for LGTBQ+ couples, who are mostly represented in the media through a tragic lens. And while there’s certainly a place for that, it’s nice to see a breezy gay couple getting on with their lives together.

One of the cutest moments in TV history was when Patrick proposed to David. Instead of a typical engagement ring, Patrick proposed with four rings — typical of what David usually wears.

They say, “To love them is to know them.” Based on Patrick’s four-ring proposal, he certainly knows David!

It’s Kurt’s Turn (to Get Memed)

When God closes a door (takes Taylor and Lana’s music off TikTok), he opens a window (gives us another Glee meme). And finally — finally! — everything is coming up Hummel.

It all started when Universal Music Group took their songs off TikTok. Many of the app’s biggest sounds and most iconic memes were reliant on UMG-copyrighted material. But there was always the Glee version! The Glee soundtracks were released by Columbia Records, so as long as you could figure out a way to say something interesting an universal using the Gwyneth Paltrow version of “Forget You,” TikTok was as good as it ever was!

Enter the Kurt Hummel version of “Rose’s Turn.” The Gypsy closer was used in season 1 to great effect, and now the beginning of that number is being used to express every form of regret. “All that work and what did it get me?” England asks about colonizing the world for spices, only to find out salt is too much. “Why did I do it?” someone who just finished Supernatural asks. We’re still waiting for a full Glee renaissance à la Twilight, but with this little internet divertissement, we are one step closer. Now figure out a meme for the New Directions version of “Chandelier.”

Gwyneth Paltrow’s ski trial musical is going back to where it all began in Utah — and getting a new vocal lead with Glee alum Darren Criss.

Gwyneth Goes Skiing is making its way to Park City, Utah, after a stop at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer, Awkward Productions announced on Monday, February 19. Criss, who acted alongside Paltrow, 51, on Glee, is joining the show’s next rendition on the soundtrack. (Paltrow played Holly Holliday on five episodes of the Fox musical, while Criss, 33, starred as Blaine Anderson from 2010 to 2015.)

Criss will lend his voice for plaintiff Terry Sanderson’s musical numbers, which include “See You in Court” and “I Wish You Well.” Comedian Cat Cohen will sing Paltrow’s songs, which were written by RuPaul’s Drag Race alum Leland. Trixie Mattel will also digitally join the cast as Paltrow’s mother, Blythe Danner, per Variety.

Creators Linus Karp and Joseph Martin will continue to play their roles as Paltrow and Sanderson on stage after a successful run in London last year.

Gwyneth Goes Skiing is a parody musical based on Paltrow’s 2016 skiing accident in Utah involving optometrist Sanderson. In January 2019, Sanderson sued the actress for allegedly crashing into him while on the slopes in Deer Valley, Utah.

He claimed in court documents obtained by Us Weekly that he suffered “a brain injury, four broken ribs and other serious injuries” after Paltrow lost control on the slopes and hit him in the back. Sanderson asked for more than $3 million in damages.

Paltrow issued a statement to Us at the time, denying any wrongdoing. “This lawsuit is completely without merit and we expect to be vindicated,” she said in response. Paltrow then filed a countersuit in February 2019, alleging that she sustained a “full body blow” after Sanderson “plowed into her back.”

The pair faced off in court in March 2023 after a judge lowered Sanderson’s damages request to $300,000. The week-long trial made headlines for a variety of reasons, including Paltrow’s courthouse style and her eyebrow-raising testimony.

During the third day of the trial, Paltrow claimed she initially thought the crash was a sexual assault. “I was skiing and two skis came between my skis forcing my legs apart and then there was a body pressing against me and there was a very strange grunting noise so my brain was trying to make sense of what was happening,” she told the court. “I thought, ‘Is this a practical joke? Is someone doing something perverted? This is really, really strange.’ My mind was going very quickly and I was trying to ascertain what was happening.”

Ryan Murphy Really, Really Did Not Like That Tweet

The Writers Guild of America, which has been on strike since early May, is apparently in damage-control mode. According to a new report in The Hollywood Reporter, one of the most powerful showrunners in Hollywood, Ryan Murphy, recently threatened litigation against a union strike captain.

In order to understand what prompted the dust-up, it’s important to know that one of the WGA’s most powerful tools has been its ability to shut down TV shows by picketing productions. If even one person is picketing the entrance to a studio, Teamsters will almost always likely turn away instead of delivering important production equipment. At a time when there are virtually no scripted shows in production, Murphy has three in motion—American Horror Story, American Sports Story, and anthology American Horror Stories—which has made his projects have been a target. (Remember when AHS star Kim Kardashian caught flack for tweeting from the set during a writers strike?)

Warren Leight, an executive producer on Law & Order: SVU and strike captain for the guild’s East Coast branch, is one of the people leading the rapid response team that’s been targeting productions around the greater New York area. In late June, he tweeted that crewmembers on American Horror Story, which has been filming at Silvercup Studios, told him that they’d be “blackballed in Murphy-land” if they refused to cross the picket lines. A spokesperson for Murphy called the claims “categorically false,” and a lawyer representing him sent a letter to WGA East leadership threatening litigation against Leight, THR reports. Murphy’s lawyer did not respond to a request for comment.

Leight subsequently deleted the tweet, issued an apology, and reportedly forfeited his leadership roles within the WGA East. Vanity Fair reached out to Leight and a WGA East spokesperson for comment. Now, WGA East has apparently had to remind its leadership that they shouldn’t be going after fellow writers, but rather focusing on fighting the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers, with whom they’ve yet to agree on a new contract. “If we turn on each other, the AMPTP wins,” reads the WGA East memo, which THR obtained and published.

In the same memo, WGA East said it would continue to picket his shows and investigate any leads about members violating strike rules. Murphy’s shows are allowed to remain in production as long as they’re using scripts written before the strike, and Murphy can continue working in his capacity as a producer, but a source close to the Dahmer cocreator says he’s been staying away from set in an effort to adhere to strike protocols.

  • ‘The Price of Glee’ Revelations: From Lea Michele’s Alleged Onset Behavior To Cory Monteith’s Struggles

‘The Price of Glee’ Revelations: From Lea Michele’s Alleged Onset Behavior To Cory Monteith’s Struggles

    By Stacy Lambe, ETOnline.com.

“The Price of Glee”, a three-part limited documentary, is pulling back the curtain on the cultural phenomenon that was “Glee”.

When the high school musical series from Ryan Murphy first debuted in 2009, it quickly broke down barriers, set records and changed the music and TV industry. It also made super stars out of its ensemble cast, including Cory Monteith, Mark Salling and Naya Rivera, whose lives were eventually cut short in very different, very tragic ways, leaving a dark cloud looming over the series that became rocked by scandals, gossip and more.

In the series, which premieres Monday, Jan. 16 on ID and discovery+, relatives and friends of the “Glee” cast, including Rivera’s father George and Monteith’s roommate Justin Neill, as well as those who were on set or covered the production during its six-season run, are speaking out.

While ET has reached out to Lea Michele’s team about allegations made about her onset behavior, she previously issued an apology after Samantha Marie Ware came forward with her own accusations against Michele. Meanwhile, several cast members have slammed the docuseries. “This is [trash emoji],” Kevin McHale wrote on Twitter ahead of its premiere.

That said, here are some of the biggest revelations from all three episodes.

Hairstylist Claims Someone Told Cory Monteith to Start Drinking Again

Monteith died on July 13, 2013, after a drug overdose during a trip back home to Canada shortly before production began on season 5. It was during the weeklong visit that he allegedly started drinking again before his body was found in a hotel room with drugs and alcohol.

Leading up to his death, Monteith got his hair cut by Dugg Kirkpatrick, the show’s hair department head, who regularly styled many of male co-stars’ hair on and off the set of “Glee”. It was during that session that Kirkpatrick recalled the last conversation he had with the actor.

Kirkpatrick claimed that Monteith attended a party where there was alcohol and resisted drinking at the time. “But he was told by a certain cast member that same night, ‘You know what? If you want to have a drink, you should have a drink. I’ll be here. You can always trust that I’ll be here for you,’” the hairstylist recalled.

Apparently, that upset Monteith, but he started to drink again “because he was given permission by somebody that he loved,” Kirkpatrick continued. While he refused to “name names,” Kirkpatrick remembered talking to the actor about it for days at a time. “I think it set him on a path to destruction.”

Cory Monteith Had a Stalker and Struggled With Fame

The show’s fandom quickly spiraled out of control, and became an ongoing issue for the stars of “Glee”. At one point, a fan ran up and kissed Chris Colfer on the mouth without his consent. Eventually, the production was forced to build a wall from the trailers to the set so fans couldn’t bother them during filming.

“That tunnel is real,” said Stephen Kramer Glickman, Cory Monteith’s friend, while the actor’s roommate, Justin Neill, remembered how things at home got even worse. Neill said that they had to put up security cameras outside their apartment because Monteith had a female stalker at the time. The security issue eventually led to the actor moving out.

Before Monteith moved out, Neill recalled how much his roommate didn’t know how to handle being famous and was stressed out about keeping up with all the dancing and singing on the set of “Glee”. According to friends and members of the crew, the actor became increasingly neurotic and isolated – and eventually started disappearing from the set or had his stand-in rehearse with the cast.

Cast and Crew Detail Lea Michele’s Alleged Onset Behavior

Prior to joining “Glee”, Michele reportedly had a reputation for “being difficult.” Garrett Greer, an assistant to the executive producer during seasons 1 and 2, claimed that “Lea’s a narcissist” and “if there was ever a threat to [her character’s] attention, that caused conflict.”

Naya Rivera’s father, George, went on to say that the only person his daughter had “trouble with” on “Glee” was Michele. “There was always a fight between them. Always. Everybody knew. Everybody saw it. They hated each other but at the same time, respected each other’s talent,” he claimed, before alleging that Rivera got temporarily let go from the show after complaining about it to the production.

The only actor to speak out about Michele’s alleged onset behavior was Dabier Snell. The actor, who appeared in the season 4 episode, “Party All the Time,” recalled an interaction he had with her during a break in filming. “So, after we had filmed that scene and obviously there was lunch, Darren [Criss] was like, ‘Yo, you should come by. All the cast members will probably sit down.’ I was like, ‘Alright cool.’ I was there maybe 10 minutes and then I got pulled by somebody on set,” he said.

“They were like, ‘Hey Dab, can I talk to you for a minute?’ And I was like, ‘Yeah sure.’ So, she goes, ‘Somebody specifically at the table doesn’t want you sitting there,’” Dabier continued. “And I was like, ‘What?’ So, she was like, ‘I’m really sorry about that. It’s not about you. It’s just the person there doesn’t feel like you belong with the rest of the group.’”

Eventually, the actor believed it was Michele. “I took a guess and said, ‘Lea?’ She goes, [makes a wincing face and nods]. Like, wow, I really just got pulled because, like, of my status on the show. I’ve never really experienced anything like that, even in a high school setting.”

A Crewman Blames “Glee” for Brother’s Suicide

As the show continued – and got bigger – it became increasingly more difficult and more stressful to work on. Everyone in production was “expected to work hard… or you wouldn’t work there anymore,” one person recalled, while another added that the crew worked between 72 and 100 hours most weeks.

In addition to the deaths of the show’s stars, there were many more among the production team – from Julia Roberts’ half-sister Nancy Motes to Matthew Morrison’s stand-in Mark Watson – that led many to wonder if there was a curse. “Then it felt like a pattern of horrible things,” one person said before art director Michael Rizzo said, “We were family, and it was a rough time.”

J.A. Byerly was a rigging gaffer for five seasons. And during that time, his brother Mitchell also worked on set before taking his own life at the beginning of season 6. “I blame it on that show,” Byerly claimed, before later asking, “Why didn’t they shut down the show?”

Some on the Crew Thought Mark Salling Was ‘A Bit Off’

After appearing in all six seasons of “Glee”, Mark Salling was arrested in 2015 on the suspicion of possessing child pornography after being tipped off by one of his ex-girlfriends. The actor eventually pleaded guilty to the charge of receiving and possessing child pornography, which included a reported 25,000 images and videos.

“You can’t bounce back from that and I think he knew that,” said Barbara Munch, the show’s set decorator for seasons 1-2. In 2018, Salling was found dead by suicide before he could be formally sentenced.

While the news came as a shock to those who worked with him, some on the crew and production team thought Salling was different from the rest of the cast. He was allegedly quieter than his co-stars and often kept to himself, leading some people to think he was “a bit off.”

And although he briefly dated Rivera during “Glee”‘s run, many claimed their relationship was very volatile. “Mark’s relationship with Naya was kind of toxic. It was really dramatic. And I didn’t like that for her,” said Greer.

“The Price of Glee” airs Monday, Jan. 16 from 9 p.m. to 12 p.m. ET/PT on ID and is available to stream on discovery+ the same day.

  • An Animated Debate: Which Feature Will Bring Home the Oscar?

An Animated Debate: Which Feature Will Bring Home the Oscar?

This was such a good year for animation. Last year it truly boiled down to “Encanto vs. Mitchells”, but the field is wide open, so let’s run it down with the help of Vareity!

With Disney/Pixar, we have Turning Red, a critical darling. Not commercial, because Disney didn’t give it a wide release….and Lightyear and Strange World, both of which did receive wide releases, flopped, and are non-entities in this race. Turning Red, which marks the first from Pixar to be solely directed by a woman, has received critical acclaim for Shi’s depictions of female friendships and the mother-daughter relationship.

OP Note: TR is still probably my favorite film of the year.

Netflix has quite a lot, including The Sea Beast, their most successful animated film to date. There’s also My Father’s Dragon, the latest from Cartoon Saloon, which hit the platform with a mild splash. Of course, there’s Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which is almost guaranteed to place in the nominations.

The article does not, however, mention Henry Selick’s Wendell and Wild.

OP Note: Sea Beast was fine enough, and GDT’s Pinocchio was really cool. Nice to see a multitude of stop motion available, sad W&W isn’t getting more attention.

GKIDS missed a nomination last year with Belle (tip: the soundtrack is amazing), but with Inu-Oh already being nominated for a Golden Globe, maybe they can take it all the way (and give us a US release, y/y?).

Did you, like most people, forget Dreamworks Animation had not one, but two films this year? The Bad Guys had a fairly slow rollout worldwide with it’s soft, almost Spider-verse-esque style for a bunch of criminals. It sadly seems to have sunk out of the public conciousness. Meanwhile, the sixth entry into the Shrek franchise, Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, may be 11 years too late, but it was worth the wait, with very positive reviews, and a bombastic artstyle and story that stops just short of saying memento mori.

OP Note: Ok, maybe Puss in Boots is my favorite this year?

Welcome to the animation side, A24, and welcome Marcel The Shell With Shoes On. I didn’t like it. But I’m glad another stop motion/live action hybrid is making the rounds, and is winning a lot of smaller circuits!

‘Glee”s Kevin McHale Shades New Docuseries ‘The Price Of Glee’, Seemingly Calls It ‘Trash’

    By Melissa Romualdi.

Former “Glee” star Kevin McHale seemingly has nothing good to say about an upcoming docuseries that is set to examine the dark side of the beloved Fox musical comedy.

“The Price of Glee”, premiering Jan. 16 on Investigation Discovery and Discovery+, will delve into the sudden deaths of three of the series’ leads — Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez), Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) and Mark Salling (Noah “Puck” Puckerman). Deadline notes that the documentary will also feature “key cast and crew members, who will share first-hand stories of their time on [“Glee”].”

“Show me this ‘cast’ you speak of,” McHale, who starred as Artie Abrams on all six seasons of the show, tweeted Dec. 9. “This is [wastebasket emoji].”

“This was the nice version, [for the record]. Don’t make me speak on this again,” he added.

McHale’s former on-screen love interest, Jenna Ushkowitz, who portrayed Tina Cohen-Chang, replied to the actor’s last tweet with nothing but a grimacing face emoji.

In November, the original “Glee” cast members, who also co-host the “Glee” rewatch podcast “And That’s What You Really Missed” together, briefly commented on the new docuseries while speaking to BuzzFeed.

“In terms of the Discovery+ documentary, it feels even more important, to me at least, to do the podcast because we were the ones who were there,” Ushkowitz said. “And we were the ones experiencing this. And we know what really happened. So you know, for me, it feels even more pertinent to actually be the ones to share our experience when people are sharing experiences that they didn’t have.”

Although “Glee” ended in 2015, McHale noted that there’s been “this weird resurgence of ‘Glee’” thanks to the pandemic and TikTok, which is another reason why they wanted to launch their podcast.

“A whole new generation of people has been finding it. Like, children, who were not alive when the show started,” he told the outlet. “They’re not necessarily attached to all of the, let’s say, drama, or the bad things people will talk about in the press because they’re just seeing this with new eyes.”

‘The Price Of Glee’ Trailer Takes A Look Into Deaths Of Naya Rivera, Cory Monteith And Mark Salling

    By Tionah Lee‍ , ETOnline.com.

Investigation Discovery has released the chilling trailer for “The Price of Glee“. The 3-part docuseries will examine the dark side of the series on and off-screen, with a look at the sudden deaths of three of the series’ leads — Naya Rivera (Santana Lopez), Cory Monteith (Finn Hudson) and Mark Salling (Noah “Puck” Puckerman).

The trailer begins with a montage of light moments featuring the cast, before it cuts into an interview with a subject revealing the moment he found out about Monteith’s death.

Before going deeper into the trailer, a graphic reads, “In May 2009, 10 actors made their TV debut on ‘Glee’. By 2020, all of them would be famous. And three of them would be dead.”

The remainder of the trailer highlights the moments surrounding the deaths of Monteith, who died in 2013 after a drug overdose; Salling, who died by suicide in 2018 after he was convicted of child pornography charges; and Rivera, who died in 2020 as a result of accidental drowning.

Rivera’s father, George Rivera, is interviewed and speaks about his daughter’s rise to fame from a child actress to her iconic character on the series.

“I knew that was the top of the mountain for Naya,” he says. “For your kid, it was just surreal.”

A release for the docuseries says, “‘Glee’ was a once-in-a-generation cultural phenomenon that bravely pushed up against social norms and generated groundbreaking discussions around sexuality, race, disability and family. Each music-filled week brought joy to so many people, but sadly, even one of the happiest shows on television couldn’t escape the dark underbelly of Hollywood and the frenzy of burgeoning social media,” Jason Sarlanis, President of Crime and Investigative Content, Linear and Streaming, notes.

“While celebrating the show’s indelible mark on pop culture and its unprecedented success, ‘The Price of Glee’ takes a hard look at the intense pressure that results from being catapulted into superstardom and sheds new light on the terrible tragedies that befell the cast and crew of ‘Glee’.”
