The best gifts for one-year-olds with the GLAMOUR mum seal of approval (because parents will be playing with them too)

    [ad_1]

Looking for the best gifts for one-year-olds? You’ve come to the right place. Celebrating a baby’s first birthday is a major milestone (for both baby and parent). The parents have officially nailed 365 and a quarter days of nappy changes and sleepless nights – and their little one is growing into a proper little person with buckets of personality.

OK, enough with the soppy stuff and on to the practical: what on earth do you buy a one-year-old to mark such a momentous occasion?

We’ve already covered the best newborn gifts, as well as the best gifts for baby girls and boys. But turning one marks a major developmental milestone, so you’ll want to buy them something practical, fun and, let’s be honest, aesthetically pleasing – but it also has to aid their physical and cognitive development.

Thankfully, there’s plethora of toys made specifically to help one-year-olds reach age-appropriate developmental milestones (those that promote problem-solving, fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and more) and we’ve tested hundreds to bring you a concise list of the very best.

The best gifts for one-year-olds at a glance:

Don’t know where to begin? Sensory toys, puzzles, musical instruments, play tables, and walkers are all winners, but the truth is, the type of toy you pick is less important than how you and your children play with it. Decades of research suggests that the most important thing parents can do is interact with their little ones by talking, reading, singing, and getting down on their level to play.

2019 clinical report from the American Academy of Pediatrics echoes this, noting: “The most educational toy is one that fosters interactions between caregivers and children in supportive, unconditional play.” The authors recommend choosing “toys that will grow with the child, foster interactions with caregivers, encourage exploration and problem-solving, and spark the child’s imagination.”

And while you really can’t go wrong with something eye-catching for your little one, we all know you’re also very much gifting the parents who are coping with early-stage toddlerhood so you want to plump for something they’ll enjoy using with their toddler that’s ideally in a colour hue that won’t turn their house into a migraine-inducing rainbow rave.

  • Japanese Wagyu Campaign Redefining Everyday Dining Experiences Launches November 1st in the U.S.

Japanese Wagyu Campaign Redefining Everyday Dining Experiences Launches November 1st in the U.S.

    [ad_1]

Fourth Annual Campaign Partners include Restaurants in NYC, LA & SF and Nationwide E-Commerce Brands

JFOODO, the Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center established by the Japanese government, is launching its 4th annual Japanese Wagyu campaign in the United States on Nov. 1, 2023. In partnership with restaurants, chefs and butchers in New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco and e-commerce brands, this promotion will showcase the approachability of Japanese Wagyu, increasing the opportunities to include the world-famous ingredient in the celebration of everyday moments. JFOODO’s goal is to introduce more American diners to Japanese Wagyu and shift the perception that it is only for special occasions; diners can savor each moment with Japanese Wagyu. Running through Feb. 10, 2024, Japanese Wagyu will have expanded representation on dining menus in target cities and at exclusive lifestyle events, including the James Beard Foundation Gala for Good in New York City on November 3rd.

In addition to brick-and-mortar locations, three e-commerce brands – WAGYUMANMeat N’ Bone and Pursuit Farms – are also participating in the campaign. Each of these lauded meat purveyors has put together dinner party meal kits and special gift packages that offer consumers the opportunity to bring the Japanese Wagyu experience into their own kitchens.

Beyond this year’s culinary and distribution partners, the campaign is expanding with in-person activations. Japanese Wagyu will be served at the upcoming James Beard Foundation Gala for Good. There are also plans for other meet-up events with Pearl Street Caviar, Parlor Social Club and Sucker Punch Sports Bar offering special Japanese Wagyu experiences.

Let’s face it: trying to find a men’s aftershave that’s memorable enough to work as a gift for your dad/husband/brother/boyfriend can be a challenge. Even regardless of gender, new fragrances are always a tricky thing to figure out, especially if you’re trying to base your decision off online descriptions rather than, y’know, your nose.

There are huuundreds of choices out there, with brands like Yves Saint Laurent, Jean Paul Gaultier, Hermes, Moschino, Tommy Hilfiger, Bvlgari, Giorgio Armani, Kenzo, Versace, Montblanc, Burberry, JOOP! and Issey Miyake all contributing their fair share of men’s aftershaves that have gone on to become all-time classics. Add that to the fact that a fragrance is so intimate (the lucky recipient will be up close and personal with it for the rest of the day) and you can have yourself a bit of a conundrum.

If you do get it right, though, you’ll be treating the person on the receiving end to their new signature scent that will also serve as a treat to everyone around them. That’s right: successfully gifting some of the best men’s aftershaves (or eau de parfums and eau de colognes, for that matter) to your loved ones is practically an act of public service and more classy than a simple deodorant. Many even work well as a unisex fragrance too, making it a great gift for yourself too – *wink-wink*.

Look towards the crowd-pleasing aftershaves and avoiding anything that can be considered too unique or niche. What are some of the best fragrance for men, you ask? Well, it depends. Naturally, it’s a rare event when all the base, heart and top notes combine to create a scent so universally appealing that it flies off the shelves. However, aftershaves like Dior Sauvage and Chanel Bleu de Chanel have definitely reached near demi-God status as continual bestsellers for a good reason.

Best aftershave for men at a glance – our top picks:

    Dior Sauvage Eau de Toilette

Prada Luna Rossa Ocean Eau de Toilette

One spritz of any of the below will have him so sold that he picks up an aftershave balm, moisturiser, serum, body spray and body lotion to match.

  • Ceramic Cigarettes, Tobacco Cologne: A Sly, Smoke-Themed Gift Guide for Dads and Everyone Else

Ceramic Cigarettes, Tobacco Cologne: A Sly, Smoke-Themed Gift Guide for Dads and Everyone Else

    [ad_1]

In my ideal writer’s setup, there are always two cigarettes within arm’s reach. One bears a faint kiss of red lipstick; the other is a stubbed-out squiggle. Both are ceramic (smoking’s not for me), but they are talismans nonetheless—part of artist Amiee Byrne’s body of work that recasts everyday objects in clay. Past pieces include a coiled extension cord, a stack of pastel dish sponges, a deflated Mylar balloon. But her cigarette series, which spans large vases and a ceramic-topped fragrance collaboration (Smoker’s Kiss) with perfumer Emily L’Ami, has lit a collective fuse. Her upcoming solo show, “Aftermath,” opening June 24 at Los Angeles’s Franchise gallery, illustrates the point. Alongside imaginative new vignettes—an exploded piñata, say, or the disaster zone following a toddler’s tantrum—there will be a self-contained little smoke shop, for anyone needing a facsimile fix.

“This cancerous stick is so special to so many people,” says Byrne, an Australian with a studio in Los Angeles’s Silver Lake. “People really, really identify with it, and for lots of different reasons.” There is the cinematic glamour, the youthful transgression, the rituals after dinner and sex. A loved one’s pack-a-day habit triggers sensory memories; quitting does too. (My grandfather kept celery sticks in his shirt pocket: a substitute for chewing tobacco.) In an oblique way, smoking—loosely defined, with room for incense and tobacco-inspired cologne and Byrne’s individual cigarette butts, which she is offering for sale for the first time—made sense as an organizing principle for this offbeat Father’s Day guide. Everyone can relate.

True to the theme, the artist Bernie Kaminski has created a limited run of papier-mâché matchbooks for this occasion. (For details, see the listing below; proceeds go to Aid For Life, which provides assistance to asylum seekers in New York City.) His now 15-year-old daughter, Eleanor, unwittingly lent the first stroke of inspiration, bringing home a papier-mâché seahorse from school. In the years since, Kaminski has fashioned autographed baseballs, restaurant guest checks, a municipal pay phone. “I made some matchbooks that I put in a fake junk drawer,” he says, referring to a veritable magnum opus: Casio calculator, Film Forum ticket stub, measuring tape, ketchup packets, Rolaids—plus the black-and-white Odeon matches he has recreated for Vanity Fair. “It was only after I got the idea to put [the matchbooks] in a shoebox”—papier-mâché Adidas, filled nearly to the brim—“that I started cranking them out.”

Meanwhile, the chef and food scientist David Zilber offers a counterpoint to smoking with his new edition for Rose, the California-based cannabis outfit known for its produce-driven Delights (a riff on the Turkish sweets). Zilber, a Noma alum who co-wrote the restaurant’s sprawling guide to fermentation, got acquainted with the brand by test-driving samples in Copenhagen, including past collaborations with Enrique Olvera and Natasha Pickowicz. “I’ve long suffered from back pain (20 years in kitchens + scoliosis is a recipe for disaster), and their CBD gummies really, actually, worked to chill my nerves and muscles out whenever my lumbar was acting up,” he writes by email. “And as for the THC, well, they’re just perfect. Easy to dose and genuinely delightful.” Zilber momentarily had his hands full with a new baby, but the Rose partnership picked up late last year, “when I only just started to feel like I was getting the whole ‘being a dad’ thing under my belt.” His creation—Nashi pear with kimchi brine and a dusting of gochugaru—reflects a bright, inventive worldview. “Leaving the high-octane life of fine dining opened up so much for me, including fatherhood,” he adds. “That said, I’m currently more exhausted than ever. Haha.”

  • La Patiala’s Kristen Shirley Shares Her Favorite Luxury Watches

La Patiala’s Kristen Shirley Shares Her Favorite Luxury Watches

    [ad_1]

Diamonds are definitely a girl’s best friend, but a watch may be her best investment. Kristen Shirley recognizes that the world of watches is one shrouded in mystery and filled with machismo that makes buying a watch daunting if you’re new to the game. Shirley, an ELLE alum and industry veteran, set out to lift the curtain on watches and their storied past with the Watch Encyclopedia on her new digital platform, La Patiala.

For the uninitiated, La Patiala is a go-to resource and encyclopedia of all things luxury, from how to shuck an oyster, which bottle of champagne to give as a gift, where to travel in Napa Valley, and, yes, how to buy a watch. The Watch Encyclopedia is a collection of 50 articles debunking every watch brand myth out there, with instructions for where to spend your money, what mistakes to avoid when making your first big purchase, and everything in between.

With over 15 years of experience in the industry, Shirley is indeed a trusted source of knowledge for the complicated world of watches, which are not only a utilitarian purchase—they’re investment pieces that stand the test of trends and time (no pun intended). Ahead of the holiday season, we spoke with Shirley about the Watch Encyclopedia, her dream timepiece, and the styles she thinks you should gift (or ask for) this year.

Why do watches make the best gift?

Watches have been a traditional gift for special occasions and memorable moments for decades—and for good reason. Watch design hasn’t changed significantly—a classic dress watch from the 1950s has a similar look to a contemporary dress watch. So even though watches can be expensive, you know you’re giving them a gift that will last a long time and will remain stylish, no matter what the fashion trends are. People also wear their watches a lot and look at them frequently throughout the day, so they will be reminded of you every time they check the time.

What’s your favorite watch that you own? You must own a lot of them.

My favorite is my Bulgari Serpenti Tubogas watch. As a former fashion editor, I am drawn to its distinctive design. It really does look like a snake wrapping around your wrist, and it’s so fabulous. It stops people in their tracks when they see it, and you don’t see a lot of people wearing one, so you stand out from the crowd. I have the double wrap, which makes a really strong statement.

What’s the number one watch on your wish list?

Honestly, there are too many to count! I’ve always loved Dior’s Grand Bal watches. Automatic watches usually have a rotor (a semi-circular weight) on the back of the watch movement that winds the watch as you wear it. Dior took the unusual approach of putting the rotor on the front of the watch and decorating it using different métiers d’art, including feathers, diamonds, and engraved gold. I love how it twirls above the dial as you move. My favorite is the Dior Grand Bal Plume with brilliantly covered feathers. It’s the perfect combination of style and high horology.

What prompted you to launch La Patiala and the Watch Encyclopedia?

I started my career as a fashion assistant at ELLE, and by the time I left, I had an encyclopedic knowledge of fashion designers. In my next job, I started to cover more categories, and I was astounded by how difficult it was to earn about watches. They were so technical, and there wasn’t a resource that could teach me everything I needed to know. Most of the websites focused on watch news and were geared towards enthusiasts and collectors who already knew a lot about watches. I had to learn the hard way—asking a million questions and doing copious amounts of research.

After close to a decade covering watches, I wanted to share the knowledge I had accumulated and make watches accessible to those who appreciate craftsmanship and design. After all, watches can be extremely stylish. The Watch Encyclopedia includes everything from a glossary of watch terms to movement basics and a breakdown of the main types of watches and complications.

I know women who collect jewelry and handbags, but are scared of timepieces. I wanted to strip away all the fear and intimidation surrounding learning about watches and make it approachable to everyone. And even if you’re not interested in watches but spend a lot of time with someone who is, you can quickly learn the basics and know what they’re talking about.

  • The Best STEM Gifts For School-Age Kids, According To Education Experts

The Best STEM Gifts For School-Age Kids, According To Education Experts

    [ad_1]

If you’re out to raise the next generation of great thinkers, problem solvers and innovators, so-called “STEM” toys — a genre of toys and games that has risen in popularity over the past several years — might just provide the foundation to do so.

STEM is an academic discipline that groups together science, technology, engineering and mathematics. According to Andrew B. Raupp, executive director for STEM.org, a privately held educational research organization, it’s most beneficial to introduce some of these elements to kids as early as possible.

“Implementing STEM approaches in early education not only can help students perform better on standardized tests and in careers, but an early start in STEM can also have additional benefits that may help reduce inequities in the workforce later on,” Raupp told HuffPost.

It’s not just children who should be involved STEM-based play, Raupp said. He’s a proponent of lifelong learning as a way to reduce cognitive decline and indulge in curiosity, all while having fun doing it.

“STEM toys are available to all ages,” he said.

A large part of Raupp’s and STEM.org’s work revolves around evaluating and credentialing STEM toys and educational resources using a non-biased framework and voted-upon STEM standards.

“We are unique in that we avoid financial conflicts of interest by turning down commissions, affiliate partnerships, sponsorships and advertising revenue,” Raupp said, noting that the organization differentiates themselves from other toy award programs by offering a recognition-based program that brands don’t pay to be a part of.

Using a list that Raupp provided to HuffPost, along with STEM.org’s gift guide, we rounded up top-rated and very gift-able STEM toys for kids that can help nurture future tinkerers and foster imagination and cognitive abilities.
