  • Oregon AG Joins Multi-State Campaign To Warn Consumers About Gift Card Scams – KXL

    [ad_1]

Salem, Ore. — Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield has joined attorneys general from 13 other states in launching a new public service announcement campaign aimed at protecting consumers from gift card scams, a form of fraud that typically spikes during the holiday season.

The campaign, funded by the Gift Card Fraud Prevention Alliance, begins as millions of Americans prepare to redeem holiday gift cards — a time scammers often exploit by impersonating trusted organizations or individuals and pressuring victims to provide gift card codes.

“Gift cards are meant to be a simple way to celebrate the holidays — not a way for scammers to steal from people,” Rayfield said in a statement. “These scams work because they create urgency and fear, and they can happen to anyone.”

The PSAs will run from Dec. 26, 2025, through Jan. 31, 2026, and feature a unified message from participating state attorneys general emphasizing that while gift cards themselves are safe, consumers should remain alert to common scam tactics. The announcements provide tips for safe gift card use and urge people to report suspected fraud to their state attorney general’s office.

Gift card scams frequently involve criminals posing as government agencies, businesses, or even family members, then demanding payment through gift cards. Victims are often told to act immediately or keep the transaction secret — warning signs consumer protection officials say should raise concern.

Lisa LaBruno, executive director of the RILA Communities Foundation, which leads the Gift Card Fraud Prevention Alliance, said the coordinated effort is meant to both deter criminals and empower consumers.

“It takes a village to combat gift card fraud,” LaBruno said. “By joining forces with attorneys general, we’re giving consumers tools to protect themselves and their loved ones.”

Consumer protection officials stress that legitimate government agencies and reputable companies will never request payment via gift cards. Anyone who believes they have been targeted by a gift card scam is encouraged to report it to the Oregon Department of Justice Consumer Protection Division, which uses reports to track criminal activity and build cases against fraud networks.

Total Time 1 hour 10 minutes

    Course candy

    Cuisine American, southern

    • 1 3/4 cups white granulated sugar
    • 2/3 cup evaporated milk
    • 1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows
    • 6 tablespoons butter
    • 1 cup chocolate chips
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • Combine sugar, milk and marshmallows in a pot on top of the stove.  Bring to a boil and then turn to a low boil for 5 minutes or until mixture reaches the soft ball stage between 235-245 degrees fahrenheit on a candy thermometer.  I just cook mine for 5 minutes stirring constantly to dissolve marshmallows.

    • While sugar mixture is cooking combine butter and chocolate chips in a microwave bowl and microwave on high for 1 minute until almost all melted.  Remove and add vanilla extract and stir.  Once sugar mixture is ready pour the two together and stir until smooth.  Spray an 8 x 8 baking dish with cooking spray or line with foil and pour in fudge mixture.  Refrigerate for at least one hour.  Makes about 16 pieces depending on size you cut them.

Make this fudge peanut butter or butterscotch by just switching out the chips. This five minute fudge is so versatile and absolutely delicious.

  • MacKenzie Scott donates $640 million, with $137 million going to California nonprofits

MacKenzie Scott donates $640 million, with $137 million going to California nonprofits

    [ad_1]

When a nonprofit serving Los Angeles’ homeless and foster youth applied last year for a slice of billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott’s latest round of giving, the group hoped to get $1 million.

Instead, the team at Youth Emerging Stronger learned this week it was one of almost 300 community groups nationwide to be awarded $2 million.

“It doubled the amount that we were hoping for,” said Mark Supper, chief executive and president of Youth Emerging Stronger, adding, that they were “a bit dumbfounded by it, but we’re so happy.”

Scott, who co-founded Amazon with her ex-husband, chief executive Jeff Bezos, donated $640 million to more than 350 community groups nationwide, more than doubling the amount she initially planned to give, according to Yield Giving, Scott’s website. Of that pot, $137 million went to 76 organizations that serve Californians. The majority received $2 million, but about 80 organizations received $1 million.

Supper’s nonprofit was among the 25 Southern California groups that shared $47 million.

“For us, it’s really a transformational kind of gift,” Supper said. “It allows us to really think long term in our strategies and our approaches.”

The news of the massive donation is still only days old, and Supper said his team is still working on specific plans for how to use the money. But he said the group will definitely focus on expanding housing and mental health services for the vulnerable youth, ages 12 to 24, whom it serves.

Supper said his nonprofit was notified recently that it was among the finalists from Scott’s open call — which got more than 6,000 applicants — for “community-led, community-focused organizations whose explicit purpose is to advance the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means, and groups who have met with discrimination and other systemic obstacles.”

“We’re just so pleased that they saw the value of our work,” Supper said. “It’s a critical age bracket that I think a lot of people don’t spend a lot of time on when we look at the unhoused issue.”

Among the other Southern California awardees are the LGBTQ Center in Long Beach; Pacoima Beautiful, an environmental justice group in the San Fernando Valley; Reality Changers, a San Diego group working with first-generation college students; the California Native Vote Project, which advocates for Native American community; and Achievable Health, which provides healthcare to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, according to Scott’s database of gifts.

“We were just jumping up and down with joy when we heard this was happening,” said Carmen Ibarra, the chief executive of Achievable Health, based in Culver City.

“It comes at just the right time,” she said, as the organization’s community health center is working on plans to expand to provide services to more people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who she said are “often underserved and overlooked in healthcare.”

“We’re limited right now in terms of our capacity, mainly around space,” Ibarra said. “We will be expanding our services, expanding our site, expanding the staffing that we have to be able to serve more patients in the community. … This really is jumpstarting those efforts.”

This round of donations follows many others from Scott, who has pledged to donate more than half of her wealth, which is estimated at about $32 billion, according to Forbes. Scott has typically given to organizations without an application process, but this time she worked with philanthropic group Lever for Change to analyze the thousands of applicants.

“Grateful to Lever for Change and everyone on the evaluation and implementation teams for their roles in creating this pathway to support for people working to improve access to foundational resources in their communities,” Scott wrote on her website Tuesday. “They are vital agents of change.”

  • Gift Giving and New Relationships: How Much To Spend

Gift Giving and New Relationships: How Much To Spend

    [ad_1]

Nothing beats the honeymoon phase of a new relationship. You’re smiling all the time, the usual stressors are barely registering, and your libido is at an all-time high. While few things can derail this feeling of euphoria, there is one issue that can cause considerable anxiety for former singletons. We’re talking about gift-giving. More specifically, how much to spend on a new partner.

When’s The Right Time To Give A Gift A New Partner?

It’s tempting to indulge your significant other during the early stages of a relationship, but strip-mining your savings account and maxing out credit cards isn’t a great idea. Financial complications aside, going overboard with presents sets a precedent. Anything that doesn’t match up to that first big-ticket treat may seem like a downgrade.

You also need to get the timing right and mindfully decide how much is too much too soon. For instance, you can foot the bill for date night from the beginning of a relationship if you desire to. However, expensive gifts and grand gestures should wait until you’ve spent some time together. Many people won’t even consider adding their new beau to their to-buy-for list unless they’ve been going steady for several months.

Related Reading: 25 Unique 1 Year Anniversary Gifts For Boyfriend [2022 Updated]

Once you’ve been together for three or four months, you can consider yourself comfortably in gift-giving territory. Annual festivities like Valentine’s Day should really get priority if you want to keep your passions burning. You’ll also want to set aside funds for birthdays, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

There’s also the issue of anniversaries. You might not have tied the knot, but plenty of couples celebrate an annual milestone with an exchange of gifts. However, you’ll need to be on the same page regarding what exactly you’re celebrating. Some people count their first kiss as the kickstart of their relationship, while others opt for the date that they made things official with their other half.

How Much Should You Be Spending?

Results from a survey carried out by the National Retail Federation show that US consumers spent more than $25.9 billion on their significant others in 2023. Although this is slightly less than an all-time high of $27 billion in 2020, it’s a marked improvement on spending statistics from the previous year. These figures cover spending across the board, although recent survey results from the NRF found that consumers are setting an average of $185 aside for Valentine’s spending. Of course, you don’t need to use this as your benchmark when shopping for your other half.

Related Reading: Navigating The Sea Of Love With The Perfect Valentine’s Gift For Her

Worried about overdoing it with an extravagant gift? Or wary of coming across as a cheapskate with a budget buy? Finding the right balance can be tricky but you can use the occasion to help guide you. People tend to spend the most money on birthday gifts. However, if you’ve been dating for less than a year, don’t feel like you have to spend a small fortune. A single thoughtful gift is going to be better received than a pile of meaningless presents. If you’re prepared to shop around, you should be able to pick something special up for $50 or less.

When Christmas rolls around, you can approach gift-giving in much the same way. Once again, a thoughtfully-selected gift will always go down well. However, depending on what you’re buying, expect to shell out slightly more than you did earlier in the year. Come the holiday season, it’s not uncommon for retailers to up the price of popular products. If you’re thinking of snapping up something like a piece of jewelry or a designer fragrance, expect to pay a small premium. As a rule, a maximum budget of $100 is perfectly acceptable at Christmas. If you want to go all out with a stocking full of festive treats, you’ll have to beef up your budget accordingly.

    What About That First Anniversary?

If your relationship is lucky enough to hit that one-year milestone, you’ll probably want to acknowledge it. However, you’ll need to be savvy about things. Whether you realize it or not, this is probably the most important present you’ve ever purchased. A well-picked personal gift that reflects on the time that you’ve shared is the way to go here. While you’re free to go the expensive route, don’t feel obligated to spend money you don’t have. If you do, you might find yourself having to repeatedly raid your savings when shopping for gifts in the future.

Gift-giving in intimate relationships can truly be a complex, nerve-wracking process. We hope this guide helps ease some of the burden in picking the perfect gift for your sweetheart.

The best part about these flowers is that they will never die, unlike real flowers that look nice for a couple of days and then begin to wilt.

We love that this kit comes with two flowers so you and your significant other can build them together. If your Valentine isn’t a fan of roses, that’s okay, because Lego also has a Sunflowers Building Kit and a Lotus Flower Building Kit so you could buy the flowers your special person will love the most, or you can mix and match!

You get very strange gifts when you work in a hotel

A guest of mine who I made a good impression on, apparently, decided to gift me this gold plated dollar bill. It’s legal tender in several places, honest to god, but I’m going to get it graded and then professionally framed and put in my office. With this and the Lions winning tonight, I’m doing pretty damn good lately.

  • What Is Boxing Day

    What Is Boxing Day

    [ad_1]

You ask the average person in London what Boxing Day is and you get a variety of answers.  It is the day you get drunk with the people you like, or it is the day you recover from family.  Or is it a holiday where you can rest after Christmas?  What is Boxing Day and how did it start? It is definitely more than another holiday shopping day.  But why did come about and do only the Brits get to enjoy it?

RELATED: What To Consider Before Giving Marijuana As a Gift

For Britain, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, and other Commonwealth countries it is public holiday. Most offices are closed on this day if it is a weekday and adds to the nice long Christmas break.

In parts of Europe, such as several regions of Spain, the Czech Republic, Germany, Austria, Romania, Hungary, the Netherlands, Italy, Poland, Slovakia,[4] Slovenia, Croatia, Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Belgium, Norway, and in the Republic of Ireland, 26 December is Saint Stephen’s Day, which is considered the second day of Christmas.  But is is a different holiday and background than Boxing Day.

During the Victorian era, the upper class and aristocracy would box up leftover food, money, gifts and goods and give them to their tradesmen, servants and others who provided reliable service all year.

It is a wonderful sentiment which has been a bit forgotten. Today, Boxing Day in the UK and Commonwealth is more known for leftovers, relaxing and the Boxing Day Sales.

RELATED: The Most Popular Marijuana Flavors

It was more philanthropic and family oriented up until WWII. A gradual shift occurred during the economic boom after the second world war as the British slowly got back on their feet.  Retailers realized it was a chance to drive traffic and sales.  By the mid-1950, consumer expenditure increased and the competition between retailers intensified. Now it is similar to Black Friday in the US with stores opening early, big markdowns on a few products and big crowds.

So today is a day to either kick back and join the throngs of shoppers. Either way – have fun!

  • Marijuana Makes For A Great Last Minute Gift

Marijuana Makes For A Great Last Minute Gift

    [ad_1]

Gift giving can be tough – finding the perfect present takes thought, skill and time….and sometines you just don’t have the time. More than 140 million people will be out getting those last minute gifts according to the National Retailers Association.  You have seen them driving around, printing pictures from the internet and frantic looking for open stores. Don’t stress yourself out looking for the perfect thing – we have an idea. Marijuana makes a great last minute gift.

RELATED: What To Consider Before Giving Marijuana As a Gift

There are some other non-cannabis ideas.  Gift cards (if you know what they like), the new Bailey’s Chocolate is a little piece of heavens, or a fun subscription like to a Master Class, media like there favorite news site, or movie tickets (Where they are also open late).  But with 18% of people using, why not give the gift of weed?

Over 50% of the country has access to legal cannabis and it is mainstreaming quicker than you think.  According to BDSA, women are almost equal to men who use.  And according to the Pew Research, 90% believe it should be legal in some form.  So with almost 20% of the population consuming, why not give it as a gift.  Dispensaries stay up late so it is truly a great last minute gift.

RELATED: The Most Popular Marijuana Flavors

If you are giving marijuana as a gift, consider gummies. They are by the most used form with almost 49% saying they use gummies over anything else.  Next would be chocolate edibles, easy to use and easy to managing the dosing.

A fun idea could also be a Hemp Drink, found in convince stores, dispensaries and in some states, liquor stores, these make for an alternative to beer. Although hemp doesn’t have the psychoactive components of the cannabis plant like marijuana, it can still give you a buzz.  And brewers who create hemp ales still must follow proper licensing and regulations on state and federal levels.

  • Supermom In Training: Instilling gratitude in children

Supermom In Training: Instilling gratitude in children

    [ad_1]

I am grateful. I am soooo grateful. I have a warm and wonderful home, and a partner to share my life with, and I have a beautiful and healthy little boy who literally makes my heart sing every single day. I was thinking about a church homily I heard once about planning for the future but also finding a balance living in the present as well, and taking stock in what you do have in your life. I try to do that every day, numerous times a day. And I want to teach my son gratitude.

That entails being observant. When we’re surrounded by his toys and books and things, we often stop to look around us and pause to see how lucky we are that we have so many toys. I want my son to realize how much we have (and it’s too much, really).

We also look at what’s going on around us, and we talk about how can we help these people in any way possible (we recently gathered loads of clothes and toys for donation). We reflect on our own blessings and, again, how lucky we are to have a roof over our heads, food on the table, etc.

We acknowledge when we receive gifts by writing thank-you cards or even making artwork for the person. My son is quite popular with the church-goers of my parish, and they would frequently pick up little cars and trucks for him. And we would always go home and make them something for the following Sunday to thank them. We’d talk about how nice it was for that person to stop and take time to think about our bean. And I think he genuinely feels lucky to receive these little gifts.

We buy for others, together. If we know it’s someone’s birthday, the bean always helps me choose the gift. Yes, I may encounter the requests to buy him something too, but I’m adamant about not doing so, because he has to learn that we do for others. And he’s usually very good about it.

We stop and thank people. Food vendors and store employees. We hold doors for people. We wave “thank you” when cars let us cross the street. If there’s one way to raise a conscientious, thoughtful child, it’s by teaching gratitude. Every day.

How do you teach your child gratitude?

  • Ceramic Cigarettes, Tobacco Cologne: A Sly, Smoke-Themed Gift Guide for Dads and Everyone Else

Ceramic Cigarettes, Tobacco Cologne: A Sly, Smoke-Themed Gift Guide for Dads and Everyone Else

    [ad_1]

In my ideal writer’s setup, there are always two cigarettes within arm’s reach. One bears a faint kiss of red lipstick; the other is a stubbed-out squiggle. Both are ceramic (smoking’s not for me), but they are talismans nonetheless—part of artist Amiee Byrne’s body of work that recasts everyday objects in clay. Past pieces include a coiled extension cord, a stack of pastel dish sponges, a deflated Mylar balloon. But her cigarette series, which spans large vases and a ceramic-topped fragrance collaboration (Smoker’s Kiss) with perfumer Emily L’Ami, has lit a collective fuse. Her upcoming solo show, “Aftermath,” opening June 24 at Los Angeles’s Franchise gallery, illustrates the point. Alongside imaginative new vignettes—an exploded piñata, say, or the disaster zone following a toddler’s tantrum—there will be a self-contained little smoke shop, for anyone needing a facsimile fix.

“This cancerous stick is so special to so many people,” says Byrne, an Australian with a studio in Los Angeles’s Silver Lake. “People really, really identify with it, and for lots of different reasons.” There is the cinematic glamour, the youthful transgression, the rituals after dinner and sex. A loved one’s pack-a-day habit triggers sensory memories; quitting does too. (My grandfather kept celery sticks in his shirt pocket: a substitute for chewing tobacco.) In an oblique way, smoking—loosely defined, with room for incense and tobacco-inspired cologne and Byrne’s individual cigarette butts, which she is offering for sale for the first time—made sense as an organizing principle for this offbeat Father’s Day guide. Everyone can relate.

True to the theme, the artist Bernie Kaminski has created a limited run of papier-mâché matchbooks for this occasion. (For details, see the listing below; proceeds go to Aid For Life, which provides assistance to asylum seekers in New York City.) His now 15-year-old daughter, Eleanor, unwittingly lent the first stroke of inspiration, bringing home a papier-mâché seahorse from school. In the years since, Kaminski has fashioned autographed baseballs, restaurant guest checks, a municipal pay phone. “I made some matchbooks that I put in a fake junk drawer,” he says, referring to a veritable magnum opus: Casio calculator, Film Forum ticket stub, measuring tape, ketchup packets, Rolaids—plus the black-and-white Odeon matches he has recreated for Vanity Fair. “It was only after I got the idea to put [the matchbooks] in a shoebox”—papier-mâché Adidas, filled nearly to the brim—“that I started cranking them out.”

Meanwhile, the chef and food scientist David Zilber offers a counterpoint to smoking with his new edition for Rose, the California-based cannabis outfit known for its produce-driven Delights (a riff on the Turkish sweets). Zilber, a Noma alum who co-wrote the restaurant’s sprawling guide to fermentation, got acquainted with the brand by test-driving samples in Copenhagen, including past collaborations with Enrique Olvera and Natasha Pickowicz. “I’ve long suffered from back pain (20 years in kitchens + scoliosis is a recipe for disaster), and their CBD gummies really, actually, worked to chill my nerves and muscles out whenever my lumbar was acting up,” he writes by email. “And as for the THC, well, they’re just perfect. Easy to dose and genuinely delightful.” Zilber momentarily had his hands full with a new baby, but the Rose partnership picked up late last year, “when I only just started to feel like I was getting the whole ‘being a dad’ thing under my belt.” His creation—Nashi pear with kimchi brine and a dusting of gochugaru—reflects a bright, inventive worldview. “Leaving the high-octane life of fine dining opened up so much for me, including fatherhood,” he adds. “That said, I’m currently more exhausted than ever. Haha.”
