    Using Fuel Points

    For every 100 points are worth $0.10 off per gallon on your fill up of up to 20 gallons, or 30 gallons in some states. The more you can pump in one transaction, the better the deal gets. If you buy more than one gift card, you’ll obviously get more points. But you can only redeem up to 1500 points per transaction at some locations, which is $1.50 off per gallon. Some places you can use even more, up to free gas. Points can be redeemed at gas stations at these supermarkets, or participating Shell locations which can be found here.

    Read more here on how to use your points on gas, or groceries. You can choose within 30 days if you want to use points for gas or groceries. Once you choose, you have another 30 days to use them.

    Guru’s Wrap-up

    We have seen offers for as much as 4X points on these purchases in the past. So this is not one of the best gift card deal at Stop&Shop, Giant, or Martin’s. However, we haven’t seen those better deals in a while.

    You can use the points for savings on gas or groceries, all while also earning cashback or rewards with one of the best credit cards for grocery purchases. With a $500 gift card, you would pay a $6.95 activation fee. But you would earn up to $30 back in credit card rewards, and $10 in grocery savings at your Stop&Shop, Giant or Martin’s locations. You can save even more if you use your points for gas purchases.

    Keep in mind that recently, some locations have introduced new restrictions. You will only earn points on the first Visa/Mastercard gift card purchase during the promotion period. So make sure to maximize it with a $2,000 purchase if your location has those limits. If you’re not sure, you can try a $500 purchase after that to see if you still earn points.

    Gift cards generally don’t earn fuel points at all at Giant/S&S/Martin’s, but occasionally they release offers like this to get points on gift card purchases.

    Gas Points Details

    Every 100 points gets you 10¢ off per gallon at Shell, up to 20 gallons. If you have 1000 points, you’ll get $1 off. If you have 1500 points, you’ll get $1.50 off per gallon (max $1.50 discount in most). Points can be used at partner Shell locations.

    Points are now usable on groceries as well, with a value of 100 points equaling a $1 discount.

    Our Verdict

    Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. Use a card that earns a bonus at the grocery. Stack with Chase Offer for 10% back at Stop & Shop.

    Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day (previously the limit was $5,000). They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note, some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $2,000 worth in a single transaction.

    XMarket Chicago, Billed as The Midwest’s Largest Vegan Giant Food Hall, To Close

    PlantX’s roller-coaster journey in Chicago will end this weekend as the grocery store turned vegan food hall has announced its closure in Uptown. The vegan company’s XMarket, which opened in summer 2022, just west of the DuSable Lake Shore Drive’s Montrose exit, will shutter permanently on Sunday, November 3, according to the food hall’s owners.

    XMarket was touted as the Midwest’s largest all-vegan food hall. The news hit Wednesday afternoon with Chicago vegans rushing to the venue for discounts. Even before cries of inflation driving up food prices during the pandemic, vegans in general have often complained about the cost of meatless and dairy-free goods, whether sold at grocery stores or restaurants. Though the vegan population is growing, and more vegan options are available at restaurants that serve meat, several restaurant owners have worried if they can succeed while depending on a customer base that still is considered niche.

    Last year, PlantX, a publicly-traded Vancouver-based company, converted XMarket from a grocer to a bar and food hall with six food stalls, headlined by Chicago’s Kale by Name and location of popular vegan pizzeria Kitchen 17. Another standout was El Hongo Magico, which sold mushroom tacos. In August, XMarket welcomed Impossible Quality Meats, the first restaurant from Impossible Foods. The faux meat company had made a marketing splash earlier this summer with an endorsement deal from competitive hot dog-eating star Joey Chestnut. XMarket continued to sell some groceries — it never sold produce.

    The space also housed a vegan sushi counter from the team behind Bloom Plant Based Kitchen, one of the city’s best vegan restaurants. The stall closed months ago, and while Bloom’s chef and owner Rodolfo Cuadros says he wasn’t surprised by XMarket’s closure — he’s been skeptical of the business model since he joined — the sudden closure caught him off guard.

    Kale My Name owner Nemanja Golubovic put a positive spin on the closure in an Instagram post, writing that vendors at the market weren’t paying PlantX for rent or other bills, “just [a] small commission from our sales and we kept [the] majority of our money to ourselves.” Kale My Name’s original location in Albany Park remains unaffected.

    As is the case at most food halls, the food hall’s owner — not tenants — is responsible for paying shared staff such as busers and dishwashers, Golubovic adds: “That’s why we had [the] opportunity to do very well here, but sadly [the] market couldn’t.”

    Elsewhere, rank-and-file workers bemoaned having only five days of notice that their jobs were about to be eliminated.

    PlantX Life operates three other XMarkets in Canada. Recently, they consolidated a location in suburban Vancouver at the Locavore Bar and Grill. Sales increased due to the move, according to an MDA shared this summer. That same report showed falling revenue. At $7.3 million in 2024, revenue has fallen 45 percent since 2023. Earlier in the week, the company announced it was expanding its Bloombox Club plant subscription service to Italy.

    While most restaurants have struggled after 2020 with pandemic-related challenges like rising costs including inflation, food halls have suffered particularly. This year, Chicago has seen food hall operators like Urbanspace exit the market, and 16” on Center (the owners of Thalia Hall and Empty Bottle) departed from Revival Food Hall in the Loop. Still, XMarket’s challenges seemed to be unique in Uptown, away from a ton of foot traffic and difficult for suburban vegans to find.

    It’s the first day of your vacation on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus.

    You arrive at Bedis Beach, overlooking the cool blue water, and lay down your towel to claim the perfect spot.

    It’s hot, the sun is beating down and you decide to wade into the water to cool down.

    As you step closer to the waves, you see something on the sand. It’s almost 5 inches long and has pinchers protruding from its hardened body.

    Then it scurries toward you — and goes straight for your toes.

    Researchers have put Cyprus beachgoers on high alert after swimmers discovered giant water bugs on the island for the first time, according to a study published in December in the journal Travaux du Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle “Grigore Antipa.”

    The water bugs, also known as “toe biter” bugs, are native to nations surrounding the Mediterranean Sea, including Greece, Turkey and Israel, but have been absent from Cyprus shores, according to a March 20 news release in Pensoft.

    That was until a few years ago when swimmers, tourists and locals started to post sightings of the bugs on social media, according to the release.

    Lethocerus patruelis, giant water bugs or electric light bugs, are the largest bug in the heteroptera family, the researchers said, and are known for maintaining a “predatory lifestyle.”

    They regularly “prey on a variety of organisms such as invertebrates, fish, turtles and even birds,” according to the study.

    They are also unique in that once a female lays eggs along the water, the male of the species cares for them, a “rare behavior among animals,” the researchers said.

    The first sighting of the bug in Cyprus was posted to a Facebook group called “Biodiversity of Cyprus” in 2021, and it was quickly followed by photos from others who had visited the same beach on the eastern coast of the island and saw the bug, the researchers said.

    “A total of seven sightings were eventually recorded, five from social media, and two after communications between local naturalists and the authors team,” according to the study. “Out of the seven records, we managed to acquire two individuals for a thorough morphological examination.”

    The bugs were spotted along the east coast of Cyprus, the side halfway between Israel and Turkey, the researchers said.

    They were also primarily found dead, or died soon after being captured, the researchers said, which suggests “they probably flew to Cyprus from the neighboring mainland.”

    “The specimens landed exhausted on the shoreline,” according to the study, “or in some cases in the sea, which could indicate that they were transferred by wind or sea currents from nearby countries.”

    The researchers didn’t find any of the bugs when they searched nearby waterways, suggesting the bug has not yet made a home on the island. But, because so many arrived in a short period of time, the possibility of the water bugs starting a population on Cyprus is not out of the question, the researchers said.

    The bug is referred to as a “vicious hunter” and has “a reputation of inflicting very painful bites when handled carelessly,” according to the release. Researchers warn a resident population of the bug could cause issues for beaches and coastlines heavily populated by locals and tourists alike.

    “Naturalists looking for alien-like critters can provide valuable information on the presence and a possible establishment of the species through citizen science,” the researchers said in the release. “Cypriots should keep their eyes open and their toes out of the water.”

    Cyprus is an island nation in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. Part of the divided island is independent while part, the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, is solely recognized by Turkey. The eastern coastline and Bedis Beach, where the insects were found, fall under the Turkish-controlled region.

    Giant has anchored the Lyon Village Shopping Center, at 3115 Langston Blvd. (formerly Lee Highway), for more than 60 years. It is at the intersection of Langston Boulevard and Spout Run Parkway.

    “In the normal course of evaluating our business and local trade areas, we determined that we can adequately serve this community through several other nearby Giant Food locations, as well as our online services, Giant Pickup and delivery,” Giant said in an emailed statement.

    The nearest Giant Food store is on Washington Boulevard in Virginia Square, about a mile away.

    Lyon Village Shopping Center’s other tenants include CVS Pharmacy, burger restaurant BGR, Starbucks, The Italian Store, and Big Wheel Bikes.

    Giant said all employees at the Lyon Village store are being offered transfers to other Giant locations.

    5x is on all third party gift cards is nice, and it should work on top gift cards like Amazon and Best Buy. Given that points can be used to discount groceries as well these deals are more widely useful. It can potentially amount to 5% back when redeemed for groceries or 10% back when redeemed for gas.

    Note, many SS/Giant stores have implemented a $2,000 limit in gift card purchases each day. They also require putting it all on a single card. Also note that some SS/Giant stores now only award points for the first purchase of the deal, so be sure to buy the full $2,000 worth in a single transaction. This offer might be limited to $2,000 across the entire promo period, let us know if you try.

    The $15 off $100 deal is also nice, especially on top gift card brands. Pay with a credit card that earns a bonus at grocery stores.
