Young Republican voters overwhelmingly want Donald Trump to be the GOP nominee in 2024, and they only disagree on whether he should choose Tucker Carlson or Vivek Ramaswamy as his running mate, according to a straw poll of participants who attended Turning Point Action’s annual AmericaFest.

Obtained exclusively by RealClearPolitics, the results provide a snapshot of the youth vote just weeks before the Iowa caucuses. The online poll was conducted by Turning Point Action Dec. 17-18 and surveyed 1,113 attendees at the TPUSA conference in Phoenix, Ariz.

The results show Trump as the clear favorite with 82.6% of respondents choosing the former president as their first choice. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis finished second with 7.6%, while Vivek Ramaswamy followed closely in third with 5.8%. Nikki Haley, the former South Carolina governor who has garnered national media attention and a recent bump in momentum, finished fifth.

Barely more than 1%, or 12 voters, at the Trump-friendly event said they preferred Haley compared to the 2.5% who remained “undecided.”

The topline results are not surprising given that the founder of Turning Point USA, Charlie Kirk, remains an ardent ally of the former president and previously served as the CEO of Students for Trump. But the survey sheds light on a question currently dominating Trump world.

When asked whom Trump should choose as his vice president if he wins the nomination, 35%, a plurality, settled on former Fox News personality Tucker Carlson. Another 25.7%, meanwhile, preferred Ramaswamy. Both men made headlines with their remarks at the conference.

Related: Tucker Carlson Finally Reveals If He’d Be Willing to Run As Trump’s Vice President

Ramaswamy responded from the main stage to criticism from CNN host Van Jones, who called him a demagogue earlier this month. “Just shut the f–k up,” the businessman-turned-politician said to applause. For his part, Carlson downplayed the idea of entering politics himself.

“It’s like the weather,” the pundit replied when asked about joining the ticket with Trump. “I can’t control it,” Carlson said after floating Ramaswamy instead for VP. “I don’t think I’d be that great at that.”

On the eve of the primary, the results reflect the policy appetites of the right-leaning youth. Attendees ranked border security and “deporting Biden-era illegal immigrants” as their top priority ahead of “election integrity” and “defunding the deep state,” which ranked second and third. Meanwhile, ending diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives from the government, which has been a calling card of the DeSantis campaign, ranked as their lowest priority.

Mirroring a larger shift on the right, the survey also shows a youth vote increasingly skeptical of foreign aid to Ukraine but largely supportive of Israel’s war with Hamas. A clear majority, 55.4%, backed giving lethal aid to Tel Aviv, less than 1% supported sending the same to Kyiv, and 39.4% responded that the United States shouldn’t provide such supplies to either Israel or Ukraine.

Congress generally earns poor approval ratings, but the young Republicans seemed to like newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson, with 57% either somewhat or strongly approving of his job performance. They were somewhat split, meanwhile, on whether the House should have expelled former New York Rep. George Santos, who made numerous false representations about himself during the previous election.

While 32% approved of the Santos expulsion, 47% disapproved of the history-making move which had only occurred five times previously.

The same week that the House approved an impeachment inquiry of President Biden, 49.6% said that they supported removing him from office. Another 24.3% reported that Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas should be impeached, while 15.2% wanted Attorney General Merrick Garland gone.

As both parties court the youth vote, the survey found that young Republicans in the Turning Point orbit are unsatisfied with RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel. An overwhelming 87% said that she should step down, and 56% reported that her departure would make them “more likely” to donate to the party. Charlie Kirk supported Harmeet Dhillon in her unsuccessful challenge of McDaniel earlier this year.

Israeli military veteran tapped as GOP candidate in special election to replace George Santos | Long Island Business News

    [ad_1]

    Listen to this article

Republicans have picked a little-known county lawmaker who once served in the Israeli military as their candidate in a special election to replace ousted New York congressman George Santos, party officials said Thursday.

Nassau County legislator and former Israeli paratrooper Mazi Pilip will face off against Democratic former congressman Tom Suozzi in a Feb. 13 special election for the seat, which includes northern parts of Queens and Long Island.

The selection pits Pilip, a relatively unknown local lawmaker originally from Ethiopia, against a political veteran in Suozzi, who previously represented the district for six years during a lengthy career in Long Island politics.

In a statement, Republicans in Queens and Nassau County loosely outlined some of her potential policy positions and said she would bring a new perspective to the House.

“Pilip is an effective tax fighter who will prioritize public safety, economic recovery, border security and tax relief in Congress,” the statement read. “She will bring a fresh new perspective to Washington, starkly contrasting her from the candidate for the other major political party.”

The party will hold a formal announcement ceremony for Pilip on Friday. She did not immediately return a message left at her office.

The election is expected to draw significant attention as both parties zero in on New York as a potential battleground for control of the House.

Republicans picked Pilip after vetting a number of potential candidates following the expulsion of Santos from Congress earlier this month for fabricating much of his life story and being criminally charged with defrauding donors.

The selection process appeared to be slowed after media began digging into the personal and professional histories of potential candidates, revealing damaging information that could become public during a campaign.

Politico reported last week that Pilip is a registered Democrat, though she holds her current position as a Republican and has been backed by Republicans when she was running for county office. The arrangement is not entirely uncommon in states that have closed primaries, where so-called crossover voters who identify with one party register under another so they can vote in primary elections.

Suozzi was tapped by Democrats last week after emerging as the party’s frontrunner for the nomination. His extensive political experience could be a major advantage when it comes to name recognition and fundraising for the special election.

Suozzi, a centrist Democrat, was elected to the House in 2016 and won reelection in 2020, before leaving to launch the unsuccessful campaign for governor. He also served as the mayor of Glen Cove from 1994 to 2001, and as Nassau County’s elected executive from 2002 to 2009.

Santos due in court on Long Island

    00:22

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. – Former Rep. George Santos was in court Tuesday morning.

Santos appeared for what’s termed a status conference.

It comes as he negotiates a possible plea deal on fraud charges.

Santos appeared to be in good spirits and could be seen smiling and laughing with his attorney as they arrived. He was wearing Ferragamo sneakers, which usually retail for about $1,000.

Santos walked out of court in Central Islip after the proceedings.

Prosecutors told the judge they expect negotiations to continue, and no formal offer has yet been made.

Santos faces nearly two dozen charges related to alleged wire fraud, identity theft and campaign finance violations and other crimes detailed in a pair of federal indictments handed down earlier this year.

He was expelled from Congress Dec. 1.

His trial is set to begin in September. Santos’ attorney argued against moving up the trial date, citing the 1.3 million pieces of evidence he’s received from the state for his review.

Santos is due back in court Jan. 23.

Speaking with CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer on “The Point” after he was expelled, Santos said he has “plenty” of regrets, and a “long road of redemption ahead, and I’m going to work really hard for that.”

Santos said he didn’t expect his congressional colleagues to have the “chutzpah” to expel him before he had his day in court.

He admitted that he didn’t even write his own resume or campaign bio, blaming them on “a former campaign staffer.”

He also said he now makes more money from the online website Cameo than he did as a member of Congress.

  • George Santos Says He’s Making Over $80,000 a Day on Cameo

George Santos Says He’s Making Over $80,000 a Day on Cameo

    [ad_1]

Next September, George Santos will stand trial for nearly two dozen federal crimes prosecutors have accused him of committing; if convicted, he faces more than 20 years in prison. That’s the sort of prospect that would keep most people up at night but it seems, at the moment, the recently expelled representative is living his best life.

Less than two weeks after being expelled from Congress, the former New York representative is now making money hand over fist recording personalized videos on Cameo, for which he is now charging an astonishing $500 a pop, a 566.67% increase from his original asking price of $75. Last week, Semafor reported that he was on track to make more money in a few days than his annual congressional salary of $174,000. Now it appears the demand for Santos content is so great that he will make many, many multiples of that. Over the weekend, he reportedly told people at a party on the Upper East Side that he had 140 orders on Friday at $599-a-piece, which translates to $83,860 a day. (It’s not clear when or why Santos cut his rate from $599 to $500 but perhaps he was overcome by the Christmas spirit.)

While Santos was spotted out with friends—including repsresentatives Lauren Boebert and Byron Donalds—at the Beach Café on Saturday night, he was apparently so busy churning out videos that he declined other social events. “I’d been working,” he told Page Six, explaining why he did not attend a New York Young Republican Club event earlier in the evening. “I electively chose not to go [to the gala] this year…I need to make a living because I have a family to support and feed.” (He also, obviously, has legal fees to pay. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.) In one of his recently recorded videos, he tells the recipient, “Chris, you sick psycho, you want me to yell at you? Are you out of your mind?”

While a source claimed to Page Six that Santos “bought pizza for everyone in the joint” on Saturday, the ex-lawmaker, who may or may not have restitution to pay in the future, denied doing so, saying: “I did not buy pizza for 35 people…it’s not true, it’s a lie. I ordered two $20 pies…for me and my friends.”

Trump Selects VP Running Mate – Bill Tope, Humor Times

    [ad_1]

Following months of media speculation, Donald Trump has selected his 2024 VP running mate.

After much public conjecture and overt deliberation by the candidate himself, former President Donald J. Trump has selected his 2024 VP running mate.

Trump selects VP running mate. Photo by Gage Skidmore.
    Photo: Gage Skidmore, flickr.com.

It was once thought that Trump might select a female vice president, a speculation entailing such GOP luminaries as former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, N. Dakota governor Kristi Noem (“She has the nicest ass,” averred the ex-president), Georgia Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, and even songstress superstar Stefani Germanotta (Lady Maga). Also figuring prominently in the selection process was sex-device entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy; Rep. Jim Jordan (R. OH) and high-end evening wear model Governor Ron DeSantis (R. FL).

Delivering an address at a sweat-shop tennis sneaker factory in Little Rock, Arkansas on Thursday, where 120 children under ten are employed, Trump railed against those RINOS who had in the past supported even the slightest vestiges of industrial trade unions. The ex-president paused in his speech to unexpectedly announce his VP selection: the newly defrocked congressman George Santos (R. NY). The children, who did not speak English, applauded politely.

“Santos,” boasted Trump, “has has been in Washington for only a brief period, however, he has held positions of immense power even in that short time. He’s told me all about being a Congressman, Secretary of State, a General in the Marines, an Admiral in the Navy, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he’s both written and starred in blockbuster movies in Hollywood. This shows his versatility,” said Trump.  The ex-president pointed to Santos’s tenure as Pope as evidence of Santos’s willingness to “theocratize the nation.”

“Secondly,” Trump went on, “he’s not intimidated by the fake-news, deep-state, mainstream media, like the failing New York Times and morally bankrupt MSNBC.”

Asked by a Fox News reporter how he accounted for Santos’s auspicious disposition, Trump answered at once: “Because, Santos has literally no shame.” He smiled proudly, noting that this makes Santos an especially appropriate stand-in in the event that Trump himself meets an untimely end.

“You never know,” said Trump, “I might stop eating again and maybe this time the Speaker won’t drop by.”

  • Democrats Nominate Former Rep. Tom Suozzi To Replace George Santos

Democrats Nominate Former Rep. Tom Suozzi To Replace George Santos

    [ad_1]

New York Democrats nominated former Rep. Tom Suozzi on Thursday as their candidate to fill the vacancy created by former Republican Rep. George Santos’ expulsion.

Suozzi will face the Republican nominee in New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which encompasses Queens and Long Island, in a special election on Feb. 13.

Empire State Republicans are expected to choose between Michael Sapraicone, a former New York Police Department detective who’s now a private security magnate, and Nassau County legislator Mazi Pilip, an Ethiopia-born veteran of the Israel Defense Forces. Santos endorsed Sapraicone on Sunday, writing on X that Sapraicone, who has already contributed $300,000 to his own campaign, has “the fundraising and infrastructure to go head to head with Suozzi and show the whole country NY-3 is a GOP stronghold.”

Officially, the chairs of the Queens and Nassau county Democratic parties selected Suozzi, a staunch centrist, over former state Sen. Anna Kaplan and other, less viable contenders.

But the decision was the result of heavy input from state and national Democratic leaders, many of whom, including House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (N.Y.), hail from New York. And Suozzi, who is close to Jeffries, had a virtual lock on the nomination from the start.

The attributes that make Suozzi electable in the eyes of Democrats eager to flip New York’s 3rd District are plain to any political observer. Suozzi held a seat with roughly the same boundaries for three terms before leaving to challenge New York Gov. Kathy Hochul from the right in the 2022 Democratic primary. His criticism of Democrats for being insufficiently tough on crime and his opposition to traffic congestion pricing and other liberal policies seen as unpopular on Long Island, could also limit the effectiveness of standard Republican attacks.

The final step for Suozzi was getting approval from Hochul, who summoned him to her office in Albany on Monday, according to a Tuesday report in The New York Times.

She sought assurances from Suozzi that he would not attack the Democratic Party in the course of his campaign and that he would run as an unabashed defender of abortion rights. The demands were meant to address two criticisms of Suozzi: that his negative campaigning against Hochul in the 2022 primary hurt the party in the general election and that his past moderation on abortion rights would hurt him in this campaign.

Suozzi agreed to Hochul’s requests, including by promising to stand by his support for repealing the Hyde Amendment, which bars public funding for abortions. (Suozzi started supporting repeal only in 2019 amid a pressure campaign from constituents.) He also apologized to Hochul for personal attacks against her during the 2022 primary.

The stakes of the February election are high for both parties. Republicans are eager to hold on to gains they made in New York in 2022, when the party flipped four House seats in districts that President Joe Biden had won in 2020. The GOP’s narrow majority is the result of a net pickup of five seats, which means that the results in New York were more pivotal than the outcomes in any other state.

Democrats, still reeling from the humiliation of those defeats in such a reliably blue state, are determined to avoid a repeat of their 2022 performance. The party sees New York as a key part of its strategy to retake the House ― and the special election as an opportunity to get a head start on that task. As an incumbent, the winner of the contest would be the favorite to hold the seat in the November general election.

Both parties likewise hope to make the special election outcome a harbinger of the coming presidential race. A Democratic takeover of the seat, in particular, could lend credence to the party’s claims that Biden is in better shape than his sluggish poll numbers would suggest.

New York’s 3rd District is a classic battleground seat that is set to attract big spending from both parties and their allied super PACs.

Although the boundaries after redistricting make it slightly less favorable for Democrats, voters in the district favored Biden over Donald Trump in 2020 by a margin of 8 percentage points.

At the same time, Republicans continued to perform well on Long Island in county and local elections last month. Democrats hope that nationalizing the race, with an emphasis on flipping the House and standing up to the GOP’s support for restrictions on abortion rights, will work to their advantage.

Tony Nunziato, chair of the Queens County Republican Party, told HuffPost that the eventual Republican nominee would “definitely” need to have “flexibility” on the question of abortion rights to accommodate the district’s relatively liberal social views.

He said that crime, immigration and antisemitism are more pressing issues at the moment.

“Not to diminish abortion, but there’s so many other things right now that are more in the front line,” he said.

  • Is the House Ethics Committee Coming for Matt Gaetz, George Santos–Style?

Is the House Ethics Committee Coming for Matt Gaetz, George Santos–Style?

    [ad_1]

In February, the Department of Justice informed Representative Matt Gaetz’s lawyers that it would not be bringing criminal charges against him following an investigation into allegations of sex trafficking and various other wrongdoing, allegations that Gaetz has always denied. Presumably, this news came as a huge sigh of relief to the GOP congressman, as even self-described “firebrand[s]” do not want to do time in prison. Yet while the Florida lawmaker may be in the clear from actual prosecution, at least one probe into his actions is still active—and seemingly heating up.

CNN reports that the House Ethics Committee—currently controlled by Republicans—has “reached out to at least one witness as part of its investigation into GOP Rep. Matt Gaetz to schedule an interview in the coming weeks, the latest sign that the once dormant probe remains open.” That official request, according to CNN, went out one day before the House voted to boot George Santos from Congress, following the release of an extremely damning report from the committee that is now, it seems, turning its attention to Gaetz. Among other things, the report accused Santos of engaging in criminal activity, including ripping off donors and spending their cash on Botox and OnlyFans. (Santos has denied everything and pleaded not guilty to federal charges in October.) Gaetz voted against expelling Santos from Congress and argued on the House floor that kicking out the serial liar and accused criminal before an official conviction would be an “incredible violation of precedent” that would do “grave damage” to the House of Representatives.

This content can also be viewed on the site it originates from.

As CNN notes, the House Ethics Committee, then controlled by Democrats, initially opened its investigation into Gaetz in 2021, saying it was looking into allegations that the congressman “may have engaged in sexual misconduct and/or illicit drug use, shared inappropriate images or videos on the House floor, misused state identification records, converted campaign funds to personal use, and/or accepted a bribe, improper gratuity, or impermissible gift.” The DOJ later asked the committee to pause its probe, which was revived in July. Asked about the investigation on Thursday, Gaetz told CNN, “Oh, please” and “I wish them luck.”

Last month, in an interview with Politico, former House Speaker Kevin McCarthywho lost his leadership role thanks to Gaetzsaid the Florida congressman “belongs in jail.” In a separate interview with the Daily Mail, McCarthy remarked: “From what people have said and written about it, it seems even worse than Santos.” McCarthy also suggested on Fox News last month that the same fate that befell Santos could happen to Gaetz:

George Santos Is Making a Ridiculous Amount of Money on Cameo

    [ad_1]

George Santos does not have a lot going for him at the moment, mostly on account of (1) losing his job in Congress last week and (2) the nearly two dozen felonies he was charged with (and pleaded not guilty to) early this year, which he is scheduled to stand trial for next September. He does have one bright spot in his life, though, and that’s the fact that he’s apparently making an absolutely absurd amount of money on Cameo, the platform of choice for reality TV stars, mid-tier actors, disgraced politicians, and Rudy Giuliani.

Yes, Semafor reports that Santos is churning out so many videos for paying customers that he had to buy a stand to prop up his phone because “his hand is getting tired.” As of Monday, the former congressman was charging $200 a pop, but he has since doubled his rate to $400. As of Tuesday, he’d shot 150 videos and told Semafor he planned to “crush another 60–70 tonight.” According to the outlet, screenshots show—and the CEO of Cameo confirmed—that Santos will make more money in his first few days on Cameo than his annual congressional salary of $174,000.

Cameo cofounder Steven Galanis told Semafor that Santos “is going to be an absolute whale,” and claimed the ex-representative is “putting numbers up” on par with Sarah Jessica Parker (who’s previously used it to raise money for the New York City Ballet) and Bon Jovi (who no longer has an account on the site, though a Bon Jovi impersonator does.)

In one video Santos recorded, he tells “Bobby from New Jersey,” who turned out to be indicted senator Bob Menendez, to “stay strong,” a request that came from Senator John Fetterman:

Gov. Hochul announces date for special election to replace George Santos

Gov. Hochul announces date for special election to replace George Santos

    00:19

NEW YORK — Gov. Kathy Hochul has announced a date for the special election to replace George Santos.

It will take place on Feb. 13, 2024.

Long Island and Queens voters will be able to choose a new representative for District 3.

    In a statement, Hochul said:

“As Governor, I have the solemn responsibility to call a special election to ensure the voters of Long Island and Queens once again have representation in Congress. Members of Congress provide critical constituent services, serve as a link to federal agencies, and advocate on behalf of the constituents who sent them to Washington. I look forward working with the next representative for the 3rd Congressional District on the issues facing New Yorkers.”

How does the special election work?

There will be no primary. Democrats and Republicans will each pick a candidate to go head-to-head.

Candidates have not yet been announced, but some names reportedly being considered include Republican Jack Martins, a former state senator, and Democrat Tom Suozzi, who represented the 3rd congressional district before it was redrawn.

Local Republican and Democratic leaders are expected to name their candidates this week.

Why was Santos expelled from Congress?

Santos’ expulsion came less than a month after the House Ethics Committee released a report that found “substantial evidence” that Santos violated federal law and engaged in a “complex web” of illegal activity involving his finances.

According to the report, Santos allegedly used campaign donations to pay for Botox, resorts in Atlantic City, purchases from OnlyFans and Hermès, and more.

Soon after the report was released, the House Ethics Committee’s Republican chairman filed a resolution to expel Santos.

On Friday, the House voted 311 to 114 in favor of his expulsion.

This was the third vote to expel Santos. The first happened after he was indicted by the Justice Department in May. The second took place after he was charged with a superseding indictment in October.

Are you stumped about what to give your loved ones this holiday season? Gift shopping for the guy or gal who has everything? Looking for some dirt on your representative in Congress? George Santos has got you covered!

The former congressman, who was unceremoniously booted from the House on Friday, is filling his early day of unemployment hawking videos on Cameo for $200 a pop. Describing himself as a “Former congressional ‘Icon’,” Santos lists “holiday,” “birthday,” “gossip,” “pep talk,” “roast,” “advice,” or “other” on the menu of options customers can choose from. In one video, he tells someone named “Megan,” who is getting “some tough heat in the press,” to keep her head high and not let the haters get her down, noting that he speaks from experience. (“They can boot me out of Congress, but they can’t take away my good humor or my larger-than-life personality, nor my good faith, and the absolute pride I have for everything I’ve done,” Santos says.) In another, he opens a video to a woman named “Katie,” who seemingly complimented his line-free face, by saying, “Hi Katie, thank you for the love, thank you for the kindness—you know, Botox keeps you young, fillers keep you plump.”

It’s unclear if the “gossip” Santos is offering would involve stories about his former colleagues, but there’s definitely a nonzero chance it does.

Because Santos served less than five years in Congress before he was expelled, he is not eligible to receive a pension. So these videos are obviously necessary to help pay the bills until he figures out his next act (which we assume he will soon announce involves curing cancer). In addition, shortly before lawmakers gave him the heave-ho, Santos told reporters that he will write a book and “maybe in the future” consider going on “Dancing with the Stars.”

  • ‘Veep’ Producer Developing George Santos Movie for HBO

‘Veep’ Producer Developing George Santos Movie for HBO

    [ad_1]

We haven’t seen the last of George Santos, it seems. The alleged thief and well-documented mythomaniac was expelled from Congress Friday, and a barn-burning cold open on last night’s Saturday Night Live seemed to shut the door on the 35-year-old Republican from New York. All that seemed left was his trial on 23 federal counts of theft of public funds, wire fraud, money laundering, and more—that is, until veteran satirist Frank Rich stepped into the picture.

Rich, who’s served as executive producer for funhouse-mirror HBO smashes such as Succession, will oversee a dramatic adaptation of The Fabulist, journalist Mark Chiusano’s new book on the improbable (or not?!?) rise of the ousted politician—who, arguably, might have been too over-the-top were he a character on one of Rich’s other shows, Veep.

The as-yet-unnamed Santos movie will also be an HBO joint, Deadline reports, as its HBO Films bought the option for Chiusano’s book. (Subtitled The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos, The Fabulist was released on November 28, four days before 311 members of Congress voted to show Santos the door.) Another HBO standby, Mike Makowsky (Bad Education) will pen the “forensic and darkly comic” screenplay and co-executive produce; Chiusano will act as consulting producer.

Casting has yet to be announced for the film, which Deadline characterizes as currently “in development.” Slews of social media users are already proposing Harvey Guillén (What We Do In The Shadows) for the lead, with Schitt’s Creek co-creator Dan Levy also in the suggestion box

Presumably, SNL’s Bowen Yang is also in the conversation, but it’s unclear if he’d be interested: speaking with Seth Meyers in early 2023 about his ongoing role on the show as Santos, even Yang questioned his own casting. “He has glasses, and we both have a gross nasally voice. So, like, maybe I’m the guy?”

“You can’t get a hold on him as a person,” Yang said. “You’re like, ‘Who is this guy? … what is this guy’s deal?’”

The House voted by an overwhelming 311-114 margin Friday to expel embattled Republican Rep. George Santos of New York. Santos became just the sixth House member in U.S. history to be expelled. The move followed a scathing report from the House Ethics Committee that determined Santos, who is facing federal charges, had misused campaign funds. Scott MacFarlane has the latest.

  • George Santos Has Been Booted From Congress: A Look Back at His Most Absurd Lies and Cons

George Santos Has Been Booted From Congress: A Look Back at His Most Absurd Lies and Cons

    [ad_1]

Less than a year after it first became clear that George Santos was a serial liar of the highest order, the New York congressman’s time in Congress has drawn to a close. On December 1, 2023, he was officially expelled from the House of Representatives, following the release of a report from the House Ethics Committee accusing him of, among other things, ripping off donors and spending campaign cash on himself. (For these things and more, Santos has also been charged by federal prosecutors. He has pleaded not guilty to everything and has said the Ethics Committee report is “littered in hyperbole” and “opinion.”)

As Santos lies like people breathe, it is virtually impossible to inventory literally all of his cons and deceptions, and one should simply assume that basically anything he says is not the truth. For the biggest and most absurd ones, though, here’s a handy-dandy guide.

    The alleged donor lies

According to federal prosecutors, while running for office Santos told a political consultant to tell would-be donors their money would go toward helping him get elected to the House of Representatives. Later, after two donors cut $25,000 checks, Santos allegedly spent the money on himself. What, specifically, did he splash out on? According to the House Ethics report, the money went to, among other things: purchases at Hermès and Sephora, meals, and OnlyFans.

    The alleged identity theft

Prosecutors also allege Santos stole donors’ identities and made charges on their credit cards, which most people could tell you is a very, very big no-no.

    Grandparents fled the Holocaust

Is there anything more vile, f–ked up, and shameless than claiming you had family members who were hunted by Hitler as he systematically murdered 6 million people? Don’t ask Santos that, because he would clearly view the question as a challenge. In 2021, the then candidate said in a campaign video that his “grandparents survived the Holocaust.” Several months later, speaking with the Jewish News Syndicate, he said, “I’m very proud of my grandparents’ story,” which he claimed included “fleeing Hitler.” Speaking to Fox News Digital, Santos, perhaps girding himself for getting caught in a lie, declared: “For a lot of people who are descendants of World War II refugees or survivors of the Holocaust, a lot of names and paperwork were changed in name of survival.” However, that does not, in fact, appear to be the case for Santos’s family. According to genealogist Megan Smolenyak, who spoke to CNN, “There’s no sign of Jewish and/or Ukrainian heritage and no indication of name changes along the way.” Meanwhile, according to CNN, multiple genealogy records indicate that his grandparents were born in Brazil.

In a November 2023 interview with CNN, Santos claimed to have spent the 10 previous months obtaining proof that his grandparents really were Ukrainian Jews who fled Holocaust, but that his effort was being delayed because “unfortunately, Ukraine is in the middle of a freaking war.”

Niece was kidnapped, possibly as retribution by Chinese communists

In an interview with The New York Times that was published in October 2023, Santos told reporter Grace Ashford that his young niece had been kidnapped from a playground in Queens, in what he implied may have been retaliation for his public comments about the Chinese Communist Party. A high-ranking member of law enforcement subsequently told Ashford that the matter had been looked into—and that there was no evidence of any kidnapping, period, or really any connection to the Chinese Communist Party. “We found nothing at all to suggest it’s true,” the official said. “I’d lean into, ‘he made it up.’”

His mother died as a result of 9/11

Santos’s campaign website claimed that his mother “was in her office in the South Tower on September 11,” adding that she “passed away a few years later when she lost her battle to cancer.” On July 12, 2021, he wrote on Twitter: “9/11 claimed my mothers life.” While there have obviously been many people who have died as a result of the toxic debris they inhaled on 9/11, NBC News notes that although Santos has claimed his mother was a financial executive, “public employment records show only one employer for Santos’ mother: Imports by Rose, a company based in Queens that shuttered in 1994.” There’s also the awkward matter of documents indicating she was in Brazil on the day of the attacks.

    The “assassination attempt”

In December 2022, Santos told a Brazilian podcast: “We have already suffered an attempt on my life, an assassination attempt, a threatening letter, having to have the police, a police escort standing in front of our house.” He also claimed to have been mugged, in broad daylight, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and 55th Street.

Santos expelled: What’s next for New York’s 3rd Congressional District?

Santos expelled: What’s next for New York’s 3rd Congressional District?

    05:57

NEW YORK – In an historic move, George Santos was thrown out of Congress Friday.

The House voted 311 to 114 to expel him, far surpassing the two-thirds majority required under the Constitution.Santos had survived two previous votes attempting to expel him. The first two efforts happened after he was indicted by the Justice Department in May, and then charged again with a superseding indictment in October.

Friday’s vote happened after the release of a scathing report by the House Ethics Committee

Santos had said he expected Friday’s vote to pass, and he would be thrown out.

Santos has been expelled, what happens next?

Now that Santos has been expelled, it triggers a special election to replace him in New York’s 3rd Congressional District.

Gov. Kathy Hochul has 10 days to set the date for a special election, which would then be held about six weeks later.

“I am prepared to undertake the solemn responsibility of filling the vacancy in New York’s 3rd District,” the governor posted on social media after the vote. “The people of Long Island deserve nothing less.”

“When you look at his lack of ethics, and the fact that he has not served the people of our state – particularly New York 3, where he resides – it has been an abysmal run for him, and he has not done what he had to do for New Yorkers, and I’m glad he’s gone,” Hochul said. “George Santos just took up space.”

Democrats and Republicans would pick a candidate to go head-to-head in what’s expected to be a hotly contested election, with national implications.

The special election has to happen within 70 days. There will be no primary – Democrat and Republicans will each pick a candidate.

That means the 3rd Congressional District seat will remain vacant for at least two months.

So who might run to replace Santos?

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries thinks former Rep. Tom Suozzi, CBS New York’s Marcia Kramer reported.

-“In the Republican side, it’s a little more complicated. But I’m told that the Nassau County Republican Chairman Joe Cairo actually gave a wave-by to the Republicans from Long Island to try to get rid of Santos, because he thinks that the district being redrawn gives the Republicans a good chance of holding the seat,” Kramer said.

One GOP name that has emerged: Former St. Sen. Jack Martins who Kramer described as “well known” and “well liked.”

“He has been reticent, but it could be that they could impose on him to run in a special election, and then in a general election there would be a lot of other people,” Kramer said.

What about the importance of this special election?

“There’s this really, really tight margin in the House now between the Republicans and Democrats. In New York, there’s clearly going to be a redistricting that’s going to be ordered by the state court of appeals. The Republicans are worried about holding six Republican seats, and they needed to get rid of him in order to not have that hanging over them when they’re running for reelection,” Kramer said.

Former Rep. Steve Israel said he does not expect the redistricted line will be drawn in time for the special election, but will get done by the general.

“So not only do we not have a congressman in New York 3, and not only do we not have candidates in New York 3, we don’t even know what New York 3 will look like in the long term,” Israel said.

Santos faced scrutiny after winning in the 2022 midterm elections when media outlets uncovered a series of lies he told about his background

In May, the Justice Department announced 13 federal charges against him. Those charges included wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds and making false statements to Congress.

In the May indictment, prosecutors claimed Santos induced campaign donors to contribute to a limited liability company and then he used that money for his personal expenses. Some of the items he allegedly spent the money on include designer clothing, and payments on his credit card and car. Santos also allegedly applied for unemployment insurance during the pandemic, even though he earned $120,000 from an investment firm. Prosecutors also said Santos misled Congress on disclosure statements related to his congressional campaign.

In October, Santos was charged with 10 more counts, including wire fraud, making false statements to the FEC, falsifying records, and identity theft, among other charges.

Santos has pleaded not guilty to all of the charges. He’s expected to face trial in September.

While Santos survived expulsion votes after the charges were announced, Friday’s vote comes on the heels of the House Ethics Committee report, which said it found “substantial evidence” of Santos using campaign money for personal expenses.

  • George Santos Was Finally Too Much for Republicans

George Santos Was Finally Too Much for Republicans

    [ad_1]

So long, George Santos, we hardly knew ye—and that was pretty much the problem.

This morning, House members evicted one of their own for only the sixth time in history, terminating the congressional career of the Long Island Republican barely a year after he won election on a campaign of lies and alleged fraud. The vote to expel Santos was 311–114, easily clearing the two-thirds threshold needed to pass. As with most other consequential votes this year, a unified Democratic caucus carried the resolution along with a divided GOP, whose members struggled with the decision of whether to trim their already narrow majority by kicking Santos out of Congress. A slim majority of Republicans stood by Santos, while all but four Democrats voted to expel him.

Santos’s tenure was as memorable as it was brief; to the bitter end—and it was bitter—he seemed to be auditioning for a reality show, or perhaps the title role in a sequel to Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me if You Can. Ultimately, a Republican Party that has largely embraced a former president indicted in four separate criminal cases was unwilling to offer the same support to a freshman member of Congress whom a large majority of GOP lawmakers would not have recognized before January. The vote suggested that some ethical line remains that a Republican politician cannot cross without reproach—at least if that person is not named Donald Trump. Where exactly that line sits, however, is unclear.

Republicans largely stood by Santos through earlier efforts to oust him this year after a federal grand jury indicted him on charges of wire fraud, money laundering, false statements, and theft of public funds; just a month ago, the House overwhelmingly rejected an expulsion resolution across party lines. Then came a damning report by the House Ethics Committee that alleged in striking detail just how flagrantly Santos had deceived his campaign donors. He used campaign funds on OnlyFans and Botox, among other salacious tidbits investigators uncovered. “Representative Santos sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit,” the report concluded. “He blatantly stole from his campaign.”

Santos denounced the report and generally denied the allegations, but he has refused to offer a specific defense of his actions. Still, Republican leaders resisted expelling him. Speaker Mike Johnson privately urged Santos to resign in order to spare his party the difficult vote of removing him. But Santos, who had already announced that he would not seek a second term next year, was done with party loyalty. “If I leave, they win,” he told reporters, accusing his colleagues of “bullying” him.

Johnson tried to pressure Santos, but he would not lobby other Republicans to expel him. He described the expulsion resolution as “a vote of conscience”—which is Capitol code for “vote however you want.” But in the hours before today’s vote, he and Majority Leader Steve Scalise told reporters that they would vote to save Santos.

The reason GOP leaders would protect Santos was plain: With such a small majority, they couldn’t spare a single vote, even one as ethically and legally compromised as his. “Do you think for a minute if Republicans had a 25-seat majority, they would care about George Santos’s vote?” Representative Pete Aguilar of California, the House Democratic caucus chair, asked earlier this week. “They needed him to vote for Speaker McCarthy. They needed him to vote for Speaker Johnson. That’s the only reason why he’s still a member of Congress.”

A few House Republicans acknowledged that the party could ill afford to jettison Santos when it has had enough trouble passing bills as is. The contingent pushing most aggressively for expulsion was Santos’s New York Republican colleagues, who were both personally appalled that he had slipped into Congress alongside them and most likely to suffer politically from his continued presence. A handful of GOP-held seats in Long Island and upstate New York—including the one formerly held by Santos—could determine whether Republicans keep control of the House next year.

Santos won his competitive seat in 2022 after somehow evading the scrutiny that usually accompanies closely fought House races; not until weeks later did The New York Times report that he had almost entirely invented his life story. Santos had lied about attending a prestigious prep school and earning degrees from Baruch College and NYU. He lied about working on Wall Street for Citigroup and Goldman Sachs. He said that his grandparents survived the Holocaust and that his mother was working in the Twin Towers on 9/11. Both were lies. “He has manufactured his entire life,” Representative Marc Molinaro, a fellow New York Republican, said yesterday in a floor speech arguing for Santos’s expulsion.

Publicly, the Republicans who voted with Santos—mainly staunch conservatives—argued against his removal on procedural grounds. The only other lawmakers the House has expelled were either members of the Confederacy during the Civil War or convicted of crimes in court. Ousting Santos based on accusations alone, these Republicans said, would set a dangerous new precedent and overturn the will of the voters who sent him to Congress. Yet none of them was actually willing to vouch for him. “I rise not to defend Geroge Santos, whoever he is,” Representative Matt Gaetz of Florida said in a floor speech, “but to defend the very precedent that my colleagues are willing to shatter.”

Santos was a performer until his very last moments in Congress. “I will not stand by quietly,” he declared on the House floor. It was one statement of his that was indisputably true. Santos was a ubiquitous presence in the days leading up to the vote, willing to attack anyone standing against him. During a three-hour appearance on X (formerly Twitter) Spaces, he accused his colleagues of voting while drunk on the House floor. When one Republican, Representative Max Miller of Ohio, called Santos a “crook” to his face, Santos replied by referring to him as “a woman-beater,” dredging up allegations that Miller had physically abused his ex-girlfriend. (Miller denied the accusations.) Finally, Santos attempted one last bit of retribution by filing a motion to expel Representative Jamaal Bowman of New York, the Democrat who pleaded guilty last month to a misdemeanor charge for falsely pulling a fire alarm en route to a House vote.

“It’s all theater,” Santos declared yesterday with no hint of irony, on his penultimate day as a member of Congress. He had scheduled a press conference outside the House chamber, using the Capitol dome as a picturesque tableau. In the background, however, was a different icon: a garbage truck, presumably there to take out the congressional trash.
