‘General Hospital’ Star Johnny Wactor’s Family Launches $100,000 Crowdfunding Campaign After Fatal Shooting; Donations Exceed $50,000 in 24 Hours

    [ad_1]

A GoFundMe crowdfunding campaign to support the family of late “General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor earned more than $50,000 in donations in its first 24 hours. The campaign was started by Wactor’s godmother, Michaelle Kinard, after the actor was shot and killed in downtown Los Angeles on May 25. Wactor was 37 years old. The crowdfunding goal is set at $100,000 and has exceeded $83,900 from 800 donations and counting.

“On May 25, my dearest and best friend’s son was murdered. He was the victim of the most senseless crime,” Kinard wrote on the GoFundMe campaign’s page. “Johnny Wactor, (known to many as Brando Corbin on ‘General Hospital’), was living his dream in LA. Early Saturday morning, Johnny was leaving his evening job with a coworker when they came upon three guys attempting to steal his catalytic converter. He thought he was going to be towed and said ‘Am I being towed?’ The person stood up with a mask on and said nothing and shot him.”

“Johnny was the kindest soul. My heart is utterly broken and somehow we NEED justice for Johnny!” Kinard continued. “I want to raise money for his mother, Scarlett, and his brothers, Lance and Grant, to be able to travel the distance of 2000 miles (the many times it may take) to take care of this heartbreaking business which they have been sentenced.

“With God‘s will, the killer will be arrested and the family will see him face to face,” she added. “This may help bring closure to this tragedy. Any excess donations will be donated to the charities the family chooses in memory of Johnny.”

Wactor portrayed Brando, son of Gladys Corbin (Bonnie Borroughs) who was married to drug addict Sasha Corbin (Sofia Mattsson), in “General Hospital” from 2020 to 2022. He appeared in more than 160 episodes. His additional television credits includes episodes of “Army Wives,” “Westworld,” “The OA,” “Station 19,” “Siberia,” “Agent X,” “Vantastic,” “Animal Kingdom,” “Hollywood Girl,” “Training Day,” “Criminal Minds,” “NCIS,” “The Passenger” and more.

Wactor’s talent agent, David Shaul, confirmed the actor’s death to Variety the day after the shooting.

“Johnny Wactor was a spectacular human being. Not just a talented actor who was committed to his craft but a real moral example to everyone who knew him. Standing for hard work, tenacity and a never give up attitude. In the highs and lows of a challenging profession he always kept his chin up and kept striving for the best he could be,” Shaul said in a statement. “Our time with Johnny was a privilege we would wish on everyone. He would literally give you the shirt off his back. After over a decade together, he will leave a hole in our hearts forever.”

    [ad_1]

“General Hospital” actor Johnny Wactor was fatally shot early Saturday when he came upon three men trying to steal the catalytic converter from his car, according to a law enforcement source with knowledge of the case.

The incident occurred around 3:25 a.m. when the owner of a vehicle encountered three people near Pico Boulevard and Hope Street attempting to steal the car part, said Officer Jader Chaves, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department. The man was shot by one of the thieves before all three fled in a vehicle, said Chaves. The officer did not identify the victim but said he was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A source on Sunday confirmed to The Times that the victim was Wactor, who played Brando Corbin on “General Hospital” from 2020 to 2022. He also had roles on other shows, including “Westworld,” “Criminal Minds” and “Station 19.”

Wactor, who had been working as a bartender in downtown L.A. on Saturday evening, was walking a co-worker to her car after their shift, Wactor’s brother, Grant Wactor, told The Times on Sunday. On the way, he noticed a group of men crowded around his car, and he confronted them because he thought he was being towed.

That was when he was shot.

The thieves were after Wactor’s catalytic converter, police said. The exhaust emission control device is typically found in the undercarriage of a vehicle and contains precious metals including rhodium, palladium and platinum. Thieves can make hundreds of dollars selling them to auto parts suppliers or scrapyards, where they can be melted down and the valuable metals extracted.

“My mother is tough as nails, but she’s broken down to the bone,” said Grant Wactor, Johnny’s younger brother. “We have to get him back to Charleston [S.C.]. It’s just a shame. It seems like it was just the wrong place, wrong time.”

Wactor, 37, left “General Hospital” in 2022 when his popular character was written out of the show. At the time, he told Soap Opera Digest he enjoyed the show’s large and loyal fan base.

“It was all new to me, and it was a blessing,” he said. “It made it fun to go to work and then be excited about seeing people react to the storylines you were in. That they actually cared was really cool.”

Former colleagues took to social media to mourn Wactor’s death on Sunday.

“Johnny Wactor was a beautiful, beautiful soul,” former “General Hospital” actor Parry Shen said on X. “We all were cheated of many years with him.”

Jon Lindstrom, a longtime cast member on the ABC soap, posted: “I am literally sick to my stomach at this news.” He called Wactor “one of those rare young men in this business who was kind, unassuming, humble.”

Grant Wactor said his brother was drawn to acting from an early age. Growing up in Sommerville, S.C., Johnny participated in every play he could in his elementary and middle schools. Not long after graduating from the College of Charleston in 2009, he packed up his Honda Civic and made the cross-country drive to Los Angeles to begin his acting career.

“I can’t emphasize how hard of a worker he was,” Grant Wactor said. “He would flip the Scrabble board at home because he was so competitive. But he was also one of the most charismatic people I knew. Because when he talked or listened, you could tell it was genuine.”

Johnny Wactor had recently been exploring opportunities in screenwriting while working temporarily as a bartender.

“He lived life his way,” Grant Wactor said. “He did exactly what he wanted, even to his last day. That’s who he was day in, day out. He walked the walk.”

Steve Burton Is Returning to ‘General Hospital’

    [ad_1]

Port Charles is about to welcome back an old friend.

After recently revealing that he’s leaving his one-year gig on Days of Our Lives, Steve Burton is now headed back to General Hospital. He will reprise his role as Jason Morgan in early 2024.

The news was revealed at the end of GH‘s 60th Anniversary special that aired Thursday night after The Golden Bachelor live wedding.

Burton left the ABC sudser in 2021 after failing to adhere to its vaccine policy. He ended up joining the second installment of Beyond Salem, Peacock’s Days of Our Lives spinoff, before hopping over to DOOL earlier this year. He played Harris Michaels, a role he originated on Days in 1988.

Burton depicted Jason Morgan on and off on General Hospital from 1991 to 2012, then from 2017 to 2021. His departure from the soap came three weeks after it drop-kicked Ingo Rademacher (Jasper Jacks), who had been a vocal critic of COVID-19 mandates. He subsequently sued ABC for religious discrimination.

Last July, Burton talked to Deadline about leaving the ABC soap. His character departed at an awkward time: he married his longtime pal Carly (Laura Wright).

“Look, the circumstance [of his GH departure] was tough and you know, that’s just the way it is,” he told Deadline. “I’ll always be grateful for my time there. It was my family for so long. I grew up there and the fans have always been awesome to me.”

Jacklyn Zeman, who played Bobbie Spencer for 45 years on ABC’s General Hospital, has died. She was 70.

Zeman died after a short battle with cancer, her family confirmed Wednesday. News of her death was first announced by the show’s executive producer, Frank Valentini.

“I am heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Jackie Zeman,” he wrote on Twitter. “Just like her character, the legendary Bobbie Spencer, she was a bright light and a true professional that brought so much positive energy with her work.”

ABC Entertainment and General Hospital also released a statement stating, “Jacklyn Zeman has been a beloved member of the General Hospital and ABC family since she originated the iconic role of Bobbie Spencer over 45 years ago. She leaves behind a lasting legacy for her Emmy-nominated portrayal of the bad girl turned heroine and will always be remembered for her kind heart and radiant spirit. We are devastated by the news of her passing, and send our deepest condolences to Jackie’s family, friends and loved ones.”

Zeman joined General Hospital in 1977 as Barbara Jean, who went by Bobbie, and was the feisty younger sister of Anthony Geary’s Luke Spencer. Zeman grew to regard Geary as family off camera. “I’m probably closer to him than I would be a real-life brother,” she told co-star Maurice Benard last year on his YouTube series State of Mind.

Bobbie had worked as a teen prostitute and given up a baby for adoption but had managed to turn her life around and become a nurse at General Hospital. Zeman’s portrayal of Spencer was a spirited, upbeat woman who was as sweet as pie but who also had a sense of self. She didn’t suffer fools and had no problem revoking the niceties if warranted.

“Bobbie has been a fascinating person for me to play,” she said in an interview in 1982. “I get to do … all the things that most women think about but wouldn’t dare.”

One of Zeman’s most memorable scenes was in 1994, when Bobbie’s daughter B.J. was in a school bus accident that left her brain dead. Bobbie and then-husband Tony (played by Brad Maule) made the decision to donate their daughter’s heart to her cousin, Maxie, who had Kawasaki disease.

Actor Laura Wright, who plays Bobbie’s daughter Carly Spencer, posted a series of broken heart emojis. Jon Lindstrom, who plays Kevin Collins wrote, “This is going to take me a minute to process. I can’t believe such a life force as hers has left.”

Born March 6, 1953, in Englewood, N.J., Zeman discovered a love for dance as a child, and as a teen began acting in school productions. She worked in Venezuela as a dancer after high school and was pre-med at New York University but dropped out when she was offered a contract at the ABC soap One Life to Live after originally being hired for just three days of work.

On One Life, she played Lana McClain for a little more than one year and then left for General Hospital. “I didn’t even audition,” she told a blogger in 2010. Zeman was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards for her work on the show.

Outside soap operas, Zeman worked as a Playboy Bunny to help pay for college and also acted in commercials. She had a role in 1982’s National Lampoon’s Class Reunion and appeared in a string of TV movies, including the ABC Afterschool Special Montana Crossroads in 1993. She also had a series regular role as Sofia Madison in the crime drama series The Bay, earning her a fifth Emmy Award nomination.

Zeman last’s appearance on General Hospital was in April for the wedding of her character’s grandson. The same month, she also celebrated the show’s 60th anniversary by posting a video on Instagram to fans.

“A great, big heartfelt thank you to the very special people who have been watching us and supporting us and keeping us on the air all these years. We love you,” she said.

She was married and divorced three times, first to Glenn Gordon and later to Steve Gribbin and disc jockey Murray “Murray the K” Kaufman. Zeman’s survivors include two daughters, Cassidy and Lacey, from her marriage to Gordon.

  • ‘General Hospital’ Star Genie Francis Slams Luke And Laura’s Rape Scene: ‘I Don’t Condone It’

‘General Hospital’ Star Genie Francis Slams Luke And Laura’s Rape Scene: ‘I Don’t Condone It’

    By Anita Tai.

Genie Francis is no longer defending her controversial scene from “General Hospital”.

The actress was one half of the show’s supercouple of Luke and Laura, who are beloved by fans, but their story started out in a horrible way.

In a 1979 episode, Anthony Geary’s Luke raped Laura, though the scene was later interpreted as a seduction. The couple’s eventual wedding would become one of the biggest events in television in 1981.

Reflecting on the controversial story choice at the ABC Television Critics Association press conference, the 60-year-old actress now regrets her part in that story and is no longer choosing to defend it.

“You know, as a young kid, at 17, I was told to play rape, and I played it,” Francis said, via Entertainment Weekly. “I didn’t even know what it was. But, at 17, you follow the rules, and you do as you are told, and you aim to please.”

She said with time and age, she’s changed how she’s viewed that storyline and the sensitive subject matter.

“At 60, I don’t feel the need to defend that anymore,” Francis continued. “I think that the story was inappropriate, I don’t condone it, and it’s been a burden that I’ve had to carry to try to justify that story, and so I’m not doing that anymore. When a woman says ‘No,’ she should be listened to, and if you replay that scene, you don’t have Laura just saying ‘No,’ you have her screaming ‘No.’”
