  • Report: ‘Jurassic World Rebirth’ Is Getting a Sequel and the Gang Is All Back

    The Jurassic Park films will never go extinct. After this year’s reboot of the franchise, Jurassic World Rebirth, grossed almost $900 million worldwide, a sequel seemed more likely, and now, it’s apparently happening. Director Gareth Edwards is returning to direct, and stars Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali are all expected to come back as well.

    The InSneider was the first to break the news. io9 reached out to Universal for comment or clarification, but had not yet heard back as of publication. We’ll update this story if or when we hear back.

    Either way, the news isn’t exactly surprising, of course. As we said, Rebirth was a massive hit, one of the biggest of the year, and while it didn’t quite make as much as the previous installment, Jurassic World Dominion (which crossed a billion), the film’s success both domestically and internationally proved that the franchise still has legs. Plus, Edwards was able to jump on board a project pretty far along and do something solid with it. He at least deserved to develop his own sequel from the very beginning.

    There’s no word on who will be writing the film or when we might see it in theaters, but the last film clearly left the story wide open. The team had retrieved the necessary materials to create a radical breakthrough medicine and unleashed it on the whole world. Clearly, the company they were working for wasn’t pleased, but they are probably heroes to most everyone else. Why they’d have to go anywhere to tangle with dinosaurs again, we don’t know, but that’s Hollywood’s job to figure out. Also, Ali’s character was originally supposed to die, but the filmmakers specifically brought him back so that he could return for a sequel. The writing was on the wall.

    Steven Spielberg will also return as an executive producer, and it’s already been a big day for the legend. Earlier today, it was confirmed he’d once again return to produce a third Gremlins movie as well. So until audiences stop going to see movies with scary creatures in them, Steven Spielberg is happy to provide.

    This year is already off to a very good start at the movies but 2025 is looking even bigger, in more ways than one. Fresh off the huge success of last year’s Oppenheimer and this year’s Dune: Part Two, IMAX just revealed 14 titles in 2025 that will not only be released in IMAX, but are being filmed specifically for the format.

    Spoilers of the Week | June 10th

    The list, so far, is as follows:

    • Captain America: Brave New World – February 15, 2025
    • Untitled Ryan Coogler/Michael B. Jordan – March 7, 2025
    • Thunderbolts – May 2, 2025
    • Flowervale Street – May 16, 2025
    • Mission: Impossible 8 – May 23, 2025
    • How To Train Your Dragon – June 13, 2025
    • Untitled Formula One – June 27, 2025
    • Superman – July 11, 2025
    • The Fantastic Four – July 25, 2025
    • Mercy – August 15, 2025
    • The Bride! – October 3, 2025
    • Tron: Ares – October 10, 2025
    • Blade – November 7, 2025
    • Chinese New Year, title TBC – January 29, 2025

    Of course, as these films are all so far out, release dates are subject to change and there will probably be more films using IMAX cameras in the coming months. (Also, why isn’t Avatar 3 on this list? Did Cameron not use IMAX cameras? What about Gareth Edwards and Jurassic World?)

    Now, for real film nerds, you all have one question right now. Since all of these films are being “filmed in IMAX,” will they just be released in normal, bigger, 1.9:1 IMAX? Or will any of them be full-frame, Christopher Nolan/Denis Villeneuve 1.43:1 IMAX? io9 reached out to IMAX for clarity and was told since most of these films are still in production, they couldn’t confirm what each film is using or what format each will be released in. It’s simply too early to be sure.

    But let’s have some fun and guess anyway.

    As none of the Marvel movies have ever gone 1.43, you can probably cross all those off the list. Same for the other Disney movie, Tron. Coogler/Jordan is rumored to be a period vampire movie, which sounds amazing, but maybe not “1.43 IMAX” amazing. Flowervale Street is rumored to be about dinosaurs and David Robert Mitchell is an exciting filmmaker, but I’m still thinking “No” there. Mission: Impossible 8 is a real possibility since the format has been used in the franchise, plus this is rumored to be the end of the saga so it would be a nice boost. I doubt How to Train Your Dragon would as it’s a family film but, you never know. The Joseph Kosinski-Brad Pitt Formula One movie, with its rumored $300 million budget, feels like the most obvious one to use the 1.43 aspect ratio, followed closely by James Gunn’s Superman. That would set an exciting precedent for the start of the DC Universe, if true. Mercy is an Amazon movie so, probably not that, and then there’s The Bride!, which we’re of course excited about but seems a bit more personal than epic. But again, that’s all just speculation.

    No matter what the case though, even if none of the films go the full Nolan, just filming for IMAX does give the screen a significant jump in size, not to mention the incredible sound. Out of all of the premium formats out there, it’s certainly my favorite, and one of the most profitable for studios too.

    There’s a new human entering the Jurassic World franchise, and he’s gonna be fighting for his life in this new film.

    Per Deadline, actor Manuel Garcia-Rulfo—best known for The Magnificent Seven’s 2016 reboot and Netflix’s The Lincoln Lawyer—has signed on for a starring role. (Sadly, he probably won’t be a public defender for dinosaurs or a dinosaur cowboy, two things this franchise could use.) Details on his character are currently under wraps, but he joins Scarlett Johansson and Jonathan Bailey in the Gareth Edwards-directed film. For Garcia-Rulfo, who’s also headlining Netflix’s Pedro Páramo, this marks his biggest film role to date.

    Unlike the last Jurassic trilogy, this new flick doesn’t plan to bring back any returning actors from the previous runs like Chris Pratt or Laura Dern. At the moment, it’s not even fully clear what this’ll be about beyond the general premise of humans running away from dinosaurs that want to eat them. Written by Jurassic alum David Koepp, the movie’s been previously described as a “fresh take” on the material, whose last installment was Jurassic World: Dominion back in 2022. It’s expected to start filming in the UK in June, then in Malta from July all the way to September.

    Jurassic World 4 is currently dated to come out on July 2, 2025. (A busy month that’ll be, between that, Superman, and The Fantastic Four.) We’ll have more news on the film as things develops.

    Gareth Edwards Talks Storytelling in 'The Creator,' Addresses 'Thor 5' Rumors

    The Creator, directed and co-written by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One) packs a lot into a film: it’s at once a love story, an epic sci fi film, and a meditation on artificial intelligence. We sat down with Edwards to talk about The Creator in advance of its streaming release later this week—and got the lowdown on rumors that he’s in talks to direct Marvel’s Thor 5.

    Like any good science fiction story, The Creator balances a sweeping story with a tight human drama. “Everyone, at their heart, is a storyteller,” Edwards says. “When you do it for a living, you really have to dig deep into [questions like,] ‘What the hell is a story? Why do we tell them? Why do some work amazingly, and some don’t?’ One of the first things you realize, straight out of the gate, is that there are two stories in most of these films. There’s the outer story and the inner story, and they can reflect each other.

    So the holy grail that you’re trying to do as a filmmaker—or, at least, I am—is find an epic, cinematic outer story … [and then ask] what character would live through this world, and what circumstances would allow for the perfect reflection of what’s going on in the outer world?”

    Edwards found that the answer to that question in The Creator was quite simple: with humans at war with A.I., the most interesting plot was forcing a human and simulant on a journey together. “That central relationship [between Joshua and Alfie] reflects and contains the thoughts and questions and arguments about what’s going on in the bigger world,” he says.

    Edwards also wants to put the Thor 5 rumors to rest. “[My next project is] not what I’ve read on the internet,” he says, laughing. “I also read on the internet that the Earth is flat and we never went to the moon. Maybe the Earth is flat, I don’t know! Who’s to say?”

    Sorry to everyone who was looking forward to Edwards’ take on the God of Thunder. This should cheer you up, though: The Creator is streaming on Hulu on December 20. The Creator is also available now on 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray and Digital.

    While it was somewhat divisive among fans, Rogue One is one of the most interesting Star Wars stories that’s been told in a long time. We wouldn’t have Andor without Rogue One, whether we’re talking about the narrative or the much darker tone. Rogue One was also one of the most expensive movies ever made, costing between $200-$265 million dollars. It managed to bring in $1.058 billion.

    Despite the general public being aware of some of the production process, there are also tons of inaccuracies about what exactly happened floating around online. There were extensive reshoots and rewrites, but maybe not on the level people assume. Some have said that when Lucasfilm brought in Tony Gilroy in 2016, he essentially took over as the director despite not being credited as such.

    The film’s director, Gareth Edwards, recently spoke with Kim Masters on The Business to dispel some misinformation about the film.

    “The stuff that is out there on the internet about what happened on that film — there is so much inaccuracy about the whole thing,” Edwards said. “Tony [Gilroy] came in, and he did a lot of great work, for sure. No doubt about it. But we all worked together until the last minute of that movie … The very last thing that we filmed in the pickup shoot was the Darth Vader corridor scene. I did all of that stuff.”

    Edwards also insisted that he’s “proud of the movie we all made.” His new film, The Creator, is now playing in theaters.
