  • I Live in Venice Beach Where Low-Key Style Is It—These Outfits Hit

I Live in Venice Beach Where Low-Key Style Is It—These Outfits Hit

I’ve always been a city girl. I was born in Kuala Lumpur, grew up in Houston, and upon moving to L.A., lived comfortably east of the 405 for years. But a California hazard they don’t warn you about is that you might meet a cute surfer who eventually lures you all the way west. After some cajoling, I gave in to my inner Pisces, packed up my gray Tabby, and moved us across town to the sun-dappled, salty-aired streets of Venice Beach.

It’s been six years since, and while I may not yet be a bona fide beach babe (I still prefer reading on the sand to roaring waves), it’s home. My hair is blonder, my mornings slower, and I love the neighborhood’s walkability and proximity to the Pacific Ocean. Every time I catch another glorious pink sunset, it does feel a little like living in a fantasy.

If you’ve ever experienced L.A. traffic, you know how vast and sprawling the city is. Different zip codes mean different dress codes, and the attitude in Venice is very relaxed. Denim and comfy shoes reign supreme, and a knit is a must to combat the almost-always-present marine layer. Most of my bolder pieces have been relegated to the back of my closet, awaiting invites for martinis at Tower Bar, dancing at A Club Called Rhonda, and too much pasta at Little Dom’s. So while my highlights may not be low-maintenance, my approach to daily dressing is.

Keep reading for three of my tried-and-true outfits for your next trip to the beach.

  • I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

I Just Came From Australia—This Is What All the Cool Girls Were Wearing

Earlier this November, I felt downright giddy when I realized my Australia trip was right around the corner. A sunny reprieve in the middle of winter (okay, I live in California, but still)? Yes, please!

I was so blinded by my own sunny outlook that I chose to ignore my Australian relatives’ warnings. November, they warned me, was more akin to spring, and rain was far likelier than beach days. “Totally,” I agreed as I spread bikinis out on my bed.

Here’s the cold, hard truth: Melbourne is chilly. Weather-wise, it’s got the moody marine layer of San Francisco with a healthy dash of Seattle fog. It’s a gorgeous city but a gray city nonetheless! Your girl was freezing, her dreams of returning stateside a sun-kissed goddess dashed. Ever the optimist and buoyed by a daily diet of piping-hot meat pies, I chose to look on the bright side. I was 11 hours ahead of home, putting me in the unique position of living in the future, baby! With newfound zeal, I hit the streets, credit card at ready and a keen eagle eye trained on what the cool Melbourne girls were wearing.

So Yeah, I’ve Found the Trick That Makes Any Outfit Look Cool

Floral tights are also another cool alternative when trying out the matching dress and tights trend. A few seasons ago, Ganni and Swedish Stockings teamed up for a sustainably made, zero waste collection of printed stockings. Unfortunately, the matching dress is sold out (you gotta act fast with these things!), but you can still get your hands on a few pairs of the eco-conscious range of tights.

  • Sophie Turner Went Pants-Less in a Blazer and Tights and Pulled It Off With Ease

Sophie Turner Went Pants-Less in a Blazer and Tights and Pulled It Off With Ease

Sophie Turner must get tired of people telling her that “winter is coming,” but when she wears an outfit like this, can you really blame us? Sophie, winter is here, where are your pants?

All Game of Thrones jokes aside, we’re into this savvy style statement. The actress and mother of two showed off her long legs in a gorgeous Ganni blazer paired with sheer black tights and the most perfect pointy-toe pumps. Given that she shared the photo on Instagram on January first, we have a feeling this was what she wore to ring in the New Year, and she certainly did so in style.

Upon closer inspection, the waist-defining button closure helps to make this garment look more like a dress with lapels, but trust us: it’s a jacket that could just as easily be worn with pants. But that doesn’t mean pants are required (although perhaps strongly suggested if you live somewhere it is currently snowing).

If you’re into the pants-less look, it’s actually quite simple to pull off. Just pair a slightly oversize blazer in a dark hue with matching tights (except nude), and coordinating heels. The entire outfit is probably already in your closet, but just in case, we’ve pulled a few pieces—including the Ganni blazer—that pair perfectly well together as a trio so you can save the pants for a snowy day.

  • I Rarely Wear Black Jeans, But I’m Changing My Tune After Seeing These Outfits

I Rarely Wear Black Jeans, But I’m Changing My Tune After Seeing These Outfits

I was (fashionably) late to the jean party. My first foray into pants was experimenting with my mom’s old stirrup leggings, but beyond that, dresses and skirts were strictly my jam. Anything with separate legs felt restrictive and as far as hemlines were concerned, the shorter the better.

That all changed when I discovered vintage in high school. Turned onto the “joy of the hunt” by a friend, I became addicted to the adrenaline rush of discovering one-of-a-kind pieces. My previous grievances against pants were quickly forgotten when I fell for a pair of perfectly worn-in Levi’s. This was holy grail denim: buttery soft, slightly androgynous, and in the most perfect sky blue wash. I was hooked, and my repertoire expanded quickly: frayed cutoffs in lieu of miniskirts, indigo bootcut jeans over slip dresses. My sweaters were set aside in favor of oversized, distressed denim jackets. I’d turned into a true blue-jean baby.

Denim still factors heavily in my closet. I’m in jeans almost every day. Recently, I crossed over to the dark side. Black jeans create a totally different look, and I was keen to switch things up. Revamping my denim drawer made me feel like I was in high school again, chasing a high through different cuts and washes. If you’ve recently fallen into a denim rut, read on to revitalize your black denim spark.

  • I Describe My Style as Fun Yet Wearable—These Shoe Trends Hit It for Me

I Describe My Style as Fun Yet Wearable—These Shoe Trends Hit It for Me

They say fairytales can leave a lasting impression on kids. For me, it was Cinderella. Here was this poor girl who hustled away. Her only friends the literal rodents in her house. She finally gets an invite to the hottest soirée in town, gets all dolled up, and then LOSES her incredible heels (borrowed, no less) after only one wear! The emotional hangover must’ve been real, and I was just as relieved as she must’ve been to get them back. (Side note: Does shoe sizing not exist in fairytales?) It proved to me that the right pair of shoes really can change your life. (And a glass shoe? How chic is that?)

Needless to say, I’ve been a shoe gal since. Any time we went away on a family vacation, my dad would grumble and say, “Do you really need that many shoes? We’re only gone for a week,” to which my mom and I would respond, “Exactly!” A lot could happen in a week. What if we got stuck without the right footwear? It felt silly, and we were nothing if not practical.

That practically has evolved since. I still adore a vertiginous heel every now and then, but after a few hard-learned lessons (almost destroying my ankle on some Parisian cobblestone, for one), I’m looking for function alongside fun. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not totally above buying eye-candy shoes; it’s just that they should feel as sweet on my soles—like the ones I’ve listed below.

Calling It: Every Chic Item French Girls Will Wear on Repeat Next Year

If you’re anything like me, these winter months (and The White Lotus) have you dreaming of a European summer. Posting up in the Marais, washing down pistachio gelato with an ice-cold Sancerre, and hitting those legendary French soldes all sound like good enough reason to peruse Expedia. But whether or not Europe is in the cards next year, French dressing can still be within reach.

The key to shopping like the French? Balancing practicality with style while leaving room for a little flair. French women have mastered the art of eschewing trends for more timeless pieces, meaning these purchases will serve you well beyond the year ahead. Read on for all the items our cross-Atlantic counterparts will be stocking their closets with. (Trust me—it’ll be cheaper than that Air France ticket.)

  • These 3 Ankle-Boot Styles Feel Trendy But Are Actually Timeless

These 3 Ankle-Boot Styles Feel Trendy But Are Actually Timeless

Lean in a little closer. I have a secret to share: I’ve been rinsing and repeating the same pair of black Chloé ankle boots for seven years now, and I’m not planning on stopping anytime soon. They’re my emotional support boots. Facing a long day on set? The boots are packed. Need a little height boost but not feeling a heel? She’s strapping on the boots. Going on vacation? They’ll go with everything (save for a bikini). I’ve had them re-soled once or twice, but beyond that, they look and feel as good as new. They’ve practically paid for themselves at this point!

A good ankle boot is like the Swiss Army knife of fashion. A sleek leather pair will instantly dress up jeans, while a more rugged style will add edge to a frilly dress. They’re also a great transition piece between seasons, when their knee-high cousins are getting stowed away. But with so many styles to choose from, which ones will stand the test of time like my faithful Chloé pair?

Truth be told, I didn’t anticipate them lasting as long as they did. Certain styles may feel trendy in the moment but in reality will last you several seasons. Lucky for you, I’ve lassoed a roundup of foolproof pairs to fill that ankle-boot gap in your closet (and heart).

This Is the Scandi-Girl Way to Style Jeans for a Holiday Party

When it comes to the hottest brands in the fashion industry right now, Ganni is certainly at the top of my list. The Copenhagen-based label has been leading the Scandi style charge for a while but has grown exponentially in recent years. As proof, none other than Emma Chamberlain sat front row at Ganni’s most recent show during Copenhagen Fashion Week a few months ago.

So who’s responsible for Ganni’s meteoric rise? Creative Director Ditte Reffstrup, of course. With her impeccable taste and uncanny knack for what’s cool, Reffstrup has quickly become a fashion icon. Naturally, I jumped at the chance to get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at Reffstrup’s getting-ready process for Ganni’s holiday kickoff party, which you can view on our TikTok. The final result offered the perfect styling tip on how to wear jeans for the holidays: Opt for denim with a metallic twist, and then add a cropped blazer and pointy-toe flats. Michelle Obama Wore the Denim Trend Everyone’s Replacing Skinny Jeans With

During Michelle Obama’s eight years as our first lady, we didn’t get to see her in too many casual outfits—she was much likelier to be photographed in sophisticated Jason Wu dresses. In the years since then, I’ve been reveling in seeing her true personal style shine through. I mean, who could forget those Balenciaga sparkly boots? For her latest outfit, she experimented with the denim trend that’s been surging in popularity: baggy, wide-leg cargo jeans, which are pretty much the antithesis of skinny jeans.

Obama wore Ganni’s Rinse Denim Fitted Blazer ($395) and Angi Jeans ($295) to an event in Washington, D.C., promoting her new book, The Light We Carry. I realize I might sound like a broken record at this point, but slouchy jeans are truly the most popular denim style with celebrities and influencers right now. Scroll down to see how Michelle Obama wore the trend and shop similar pairs for yourself.
