  • How Renate Reinsve Chose Her Look for the 2025 Academy Museum Gala

Can you tell me about your look tonight? What drew you to it?
What drew me to this look was the sleek lines, the masculine and the feminine together. I love strong lines in outfits.

Of your past characters, whose closet would you steal?
I think Ingrid from A Different Man had some great suits I would loved to steal, but I ended up getting a lot of Julie’s wardrobe from The Worst Person In The World, still have those.

    Renate Reinsve

    PARKER BURR

What film has most informed your sense of style?
I think my style has developed a lot working with [costume designer] Karla Welch and Louis Vuitton. I grew up seeing a mix of style from Twin Peaks and MTV, I think that combo has stuck with me.

What do you like to do in L.A. in your free time?
I love the nature around L.A., and always trying to find good coffee. Also you have the sun here, trying to get some of that before going back to Oslo in winter.

  • California ‘MAGA Dentist’ under fire for viral joke about hurting liberal patients

A self-proclaimed “MAGA Dentist” is facing backlash after a video of her joking about turning down pain-relieving gas for liberal patients at her Santa Clarita clinic blew up online.

Dr. Harleen Grewal of Skyline Smiles made this quip and other wisecracks about her distaste for left-leaning clients during a speech at the Republican Liberty Gala in 2021, comments that recently attracted mass attention after a video of the speech went viral on TikTok. That video has since been taken down, but recorded versions of it and response videos criticizing Grewal continue to circulate.

“I have a secret hat I use sometimes, it says, ‘Make your smile great again,’” she said at the gala. “So I wear that when I work with my patients, when they look horrified or complain, I quietly cut back on the laughing gas.”

In the address, she also jokes about missing the days when “the Dems stayed home during COVID with their masks on” as well as liberals’ reaction when they see the photo wall of Republican leaders in the office: “You’d think their butt was on fire. They jump up and take off as if Trump was coming in the room.”

The comments were met with laughter within the context of the Republican gala but have been met with outrage on the internet as well as calls to report Grewal to the California Dental Board.

“Dental care by a dentist who acknowledges that she doesn’t control your pain based on your political party? How does she have a license to practice?” wrote one person in a Yelp post.

More than 100 one-star reviews were left on her business’ Yelp page this week, with reviewers lambasting her remarks at the gala. Yelp has since temporarily disabled the review function for Skyline Smiles, stating that due to increased attention in the news people are likely to be writing about their personal views as opposed to a firsthand consumer experience.

Grewal did not respond to a request for comment and has not issued a recent public statement on the viral video. On Thursday morning, however, she posted a video on the MAGA Dentist and Skyline Smiles Instagram accounts with the caption, “At Skyline Smiles, every patient is family. We treat all of our patients with the same level of care, compassion, and respect because that’s what you deserve!”

By Thursday evening, both Instagram accounts were disabled.

The outrage incited by the videos was so far-reaching that a dental office in Chicago called Skyline Smiles — which has no affiliation with the Santa Clarita business — has received multiple one-star reviews as people online mistake it for Grewal’s dentistry, said Dr. Deepak Neduvelil, who owns the Chicago clinic.

Grewal has previously addressed criticisms about her gala jokes and her melding of business and politics.

In an op-ed titled “You Can’t Cancel Me” published in the Santa Clarita Valley Signal this month, Grewal said “these attacks have only made me more determined to stand tall, speak louder and fight harder.”

In the article, Grewal said that the California Dental Board had previously sent an investigator to her clinic after someone accused her of torturing patients who didn’t share her political views — a complaint Grewal said was based on “a lighthearted joke” she made at the Republican Liberty Gala.

“My words were twisted, and my career was targeted,” she wrote, “but I didn’t back down.”

The California Dental Board said it does not comment on whether complaints are submitted to the board as complaints and investigations are confidential.

Grewal also wrote that authorities had investigated her clinic following “completely false and totally unfounded” allegations that she was running an illegal ballot-harvesting operation from her office during the last election cycle. In a clip shared on her now-disabled Instagram, Grewal said that she had a ballot box in her office “not only collecting Republican ballots, but anybody’s ballots, everybody should be able to vote.”

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which provides policing services in Santa Clarita, said deputies would respond to any call for service but did not provide details on whether they had responded to calls concerning Grewal’s clinic.

  • Academy Museum Gala Dazzles As It Pays Homage To Rita Moreno, Paul Mescal, and Quentin Tarantino

Academy Museum Gala Dazzles As It Pays Homage To Rita Moreno, Paul Mescal, and Quentin Tarantino

The Academy Museum Gala’s homage to three Hollywood icons brought the best of cinema and fashion to the red carpet in Los Angeles on Saturday night. Now in its fourth year, the fundraiser–co-chaired in part by Salma Hayek Pinault, Nicole Kidman, Eva Longoria, and Tyler Perry–raised over $11 million for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to support its filmmaking exhibitions and local community initiatives.

Honoring Rita Moreno, Paul Mescal, and Quentin Tarantino for their contributions to film, the gala’s highly coveted guestlist included Amy Adams, Kylie Jenner and Netflix chief Ted Sarandos.

Longoria kicked off the evening’s programming, introducing Director and President of the Academy Museum, Amy Homma, who welcomed the guests and introduced the first presenter of the night, three-time Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg who presented the Icon Award to EGOT legend Moreno.

After the dinner service, Colman Domingo returned guests to their seats by introducing the next presenter, four-time Oscar-nominee Saoirse Ronan, who presented friend and recent co-star, Oscar-nominated actor Mescal with the Vantage Award.

The Luminary Award was presented to Tarentino by Pulp Fiction star John Travolta. During his acceptance speech, Tarantino announced the donation of his first handwritten draft of the script, which won an Oscar in 1995 for best original screenplay, to the museum.

Before the night was over, Ariana Grande closed out the evening with a heartfelt introduction to co-star Cynthia Erivo, who treated guests to a surprise musical performance, singing “I’m Here” from The Color Purple, Diana Ross’s “Home” from The Wiz (1978)” “Somewhere Over The Rainbow” from The Wizard of Oz (1939), and Prince’s “Purple Rain.” After every song, Grande stood up to cheer her fellow co-star in the upcoming Wicked musical.

There were so many stars and notable guests, it was a challenge to keep anyone in their seats. From Pamela Anderson to Demi Moore to the cast of Emilia Pérez, everyone mingled between tables to catch up after a busy fall festival season. At the end of the night, guests made their way downstairs to their cars and limos, excited to be a part of a night that celebrates cinema. The gala was presented in partnership with Rolex.

  • “I Don’t Give a F–k”: Behind the Media Revolt at the New York Young Republican Gala

“I Don’t Give a F–k”: Behind the Media Revolt at the New York Young Republican Gala

As the night dragged on, other reporters simply began filtering out of the designated enclosure—approaching guests, retrieving refreshments, policing bathroom breaks amongst themselves, often at the behest of chaperones too distracted by plates of filet mignon and risotto. “I’m mingling,” announced Jon Levine of the New York Post. “I’m gonna go talk to Steve Bannon, I don’t give a fuck.”

Meanwhile, capitalizing on my newfound freedom, I set out to hear from the city’s young Republicans, dressed in sequined ball gowns and fur coats and tuxedos, who dished out $700 to $1400 to hear Trump speak over a four-course French-service meal. As it happens, many of them were not young and not from New York. “Are you French too?” an elderly woman named Nancy asked me. Nancy is not French—she is from Savannah, Georgia—and it is unclear what gave her the impression I might be. I quizzed a number of attendees on what they would want out of a second Trump term. Most of the responses were mild: austerity cuts, heightened border security, a kneecapped bureaucratic state. But one club member, Conrad Desouza, told me he wants to see members of the Biden family convicted for treason. “You know, the penalty for that is death,” he added.

Trump finally took the stage well after 10 p.m., his fists pumping to the rhythm of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the USA”—his standard walk-up tune. The rabble was enthralled. They climbed atop chairs to get a peak at him, chanting his name in unison and swaying giddily as the line “from New York to LA” blared from the speakers. The whole affair, situated in a domed hall surrounded by Corinthian columns lit up in red, white, and blue, might as well have been commissioned by the Trump inaugural committee. He was introduced as “the 45th, 46th, and 47th president of the United States.” The club’s eagle crest, projected imposingly above the venue’s stage, served almost as a stand-in for the presidential seal.

Wax was pleased with the exorbitant arrangements. “President Trump is used to these dinky places in Iowa,” he told me. “He didn’t know what he was walking into.”

The former president was in rare form for much of his nearly 90-minute speech, perhaps because he was mostly among true believers. Remarking on his motorcade’s bulletproof glass, he said, “I have guys walking up to that thing, if they held a little [gun], I’d say, ‘go ahead, shoot.’ You know what happens? The bullet bounces back and kills them”; on Alina Habba, one of his lawyers, he said, “She happens to be a beautiful woman. But I never think about that.… I can see the most beautiful woman in the world—that doesn’t register with me at all”; on his post–Access Hollywood tape debate performance in 2016, he said, “A fantastic general, actually, said to me, ‘Sir, I’ve been on the battlefield, men have gone down on my left and on my right. I stood on hills with soldiers who were killed. But I believe the bravest thing I’ve ever seen was the night you went onto that stage with Hillary Clinton after what happened.’”

Of disgraced former New York police commissioner Bernard Kerik, whom Trump pardoned during his final months in the White House, Trump said, “And now Bernie is cleaner—this is the expression I never quite understood—than a newborn baby’s ass.… But you are, you’re the cleanest person in the room. We’re gonna get Bannon there too. He’s pretty close.” (Trump also reiterated his promise of a one-day dictatorship in the event that he returns to office.)

As for his supporters, they spent the evening snapping selfies with Paul Gosar and Lauren Boebert, passing around a comically thick congressional report on Hunter Biden, and flaunting various political merchandise. One aged attendee I spoke with wore a MAGA-themed scarf that he said his Guatemalan maid had crocheted. I spotted another older guest with a CIA pin fastened to his lapel; he declined to explain its origins.

Not everyone took kindly to the added security measures that accompanied Trump’s “grand arrival,” to borrow from the program’s parlance. One club member, an attorney named John who resides in Gramercy Park, practically feared for his life after being pulled aside by the Secret Service. Eavesdropping on their interrogation, I heard a pair of agents say they were warned he was intoxicated and might approach Trump. John denied this. “No,” he replied when asked by an agent if he had notions of crashing Trump’s dinner, before adding softly, “…unless he invites me.”

Later, I caught up with John, who did appear intoxicated and declined to provide his surname. He told me the whole thing was a misunderstanding caused by his admittedly true observation that Trump was “literally right there,” that “you could just walk up to him.” The subsequent Secret Service questioning John faced in the Cipriani cloakroom only furthered his disdain for federal law enforcement. “They’ll just kill you and make up an excuse,” he said of the agents. “And if they did,” he added, envisioning his own death, “half the club would side with them.”

  • The Met Gala 2024 Theme, Explained

The Met Gala 2024 Theme, Explained

Every year, on the first Monday in May, comes the most exclusive party of the year: The Met Gala.
VogueEditor-In-Chief Anna Wintour hand-picks the creme-de-la-creme of the highest profile celebs — a coveted who’s who list of exciting new names and A-listers alike. Together, these celebs congregate at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art donning (literally) their Monday best.

    On the surface,
the Met Gala is a fundraising event hosted by Vogue to raise funds for the Met Museum’s Costume Institute. You have to be invited to attend (normally by a brand or by Anna herself), and what goes on inside the elusive Met Gala is one of fashion’s best-kept secrets. What happens at the Gala, truly stays at the Gala.

@metmuseum DYK: When garments enter The Met collection, they can no longer be worn on the human body. So how can we understand the movement and energy of these masterpieces of fashion? This May, explore 250 pieces from The Met’s Costume Institute collection in “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” opening to the public on May 10 and celebrated at the 2024 Met Gala on May 6. Join us to see them spring to life. 🌿 🌸 🌊 #ReawakeningFashion #TheMetGala ♬ original sound – The Met

Today, the buzz around the 2024 Met Gala officially begins with the announcement of the theme: Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion. And, like with
any Met Gala theme, this needs a bit of explanation.

What Does Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion Mean?

In collaboration with the Costume Institute, every Met Gala also comes with an exhibit at the Met that’s curated to emulate the year’s theme. This year, 250 rare items from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection will be featured — including designs from Schiaparelli, Dior, and Givenchy.

“Sleeping beauties” refers to the pieces that are so rare that they can only be worn once. Some of these “sleeping beauty” gowns, like an 1877 Charles Frederick Worth gown, will be shown via CGI and AI virtual showcasing.

It’s an all-encompassing theme spanning over 400 years of fashion. The exhibit itself will have three “zones” dedicated to land, sea, and sky, according to Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in charge of the Costume Institute.

What Can We Expect People To Wear At The 2024 Met Gala?

While your mind may have gone straight to Disney’s
Sleeping Beauty, the Met Gala is going to be leaning heavy into how fashion and nature coincide. These pieces on display have been sitting in the Met’s collection for eons, some can’t even be hung upright or they’ll disintegrate.

Since many of these clothing artifacts were made with natural materials (like a bodice made from peas in a pod), you will expect to see this mimicked in attendees’ attire. Sure, there will be 1800s-inspired gowns and lace appliques…but remember: nature is emphasized.

People are thinking of florals and birds, as the exhibit will feature both a black tulle dress embroidered with blackbirds and an Alexander McQueen jacket inspired by Alfred Hitchcocks’
The Birds. But everything nature has to offer — nothing’s off the table! We might see snakes and leaves and everything in between.

And while we don’t know the hosts, or the guests, quite yet…we’re looking forward to this theme and hope we can reawaken the excitement of the Met Gala after some lackluster showings in the past few years.

  • Inside the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala, Where the “Black Tie, Black Designer” Dress Code Set a Glamorous Tone

Inside the Fifteen Percent Pledge Gala, Where the “Black Tie, Black Designer” Dress Code Set a Glamorous Tone

By the time Bethann Hardison took the stage at the Fifteen Percent Pledge gala Saturday night to accept the Pioneer Award, the audience was already primed with a clip from Invisible Beauty. Fresh off a Sundance premiere and co-directed with Frédéric Tcheng, the documentary follows the model and activist through her influential career, from the 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show (featuring a rare quorum of Black models) to her later coalition work around industry representation. Watching the film, Hardison said from the podium at the New York Public Library’s main branch, “you start to realize that you don’t remember the things you said 20 years ago, 30 years ago. I was pretty, uh, gangster back then.” Laughter rumbled across the crowd of mostly Black designers, models, and entrepreneurs. “I still am gangster,” she clarified, ever the sly provocateur. “Just a more mature, savored kind of gangster.”

The Fifteen Percent Pledge, a nonprofit born of a viral 2020 Instagram post by Brother Vellies creative director Aurora James, has become an upbeat agent of change. Her original proposition—that retailers should stock Black-owned brands in proportion to population data—corralled a high-profile group of early cosigners, including Sephora, Nordstrom, Moda Operandi, and West Elm. Last fall, the Pledge made its own retail debut, by way of a holiday pop-up in SoHo with an all-Black edit. (The web store continues through March.) But this weekend’s second annual gala marked a new evolution, centered around an inaugural round of grants—totaling nearly $300,000—presented by Shop with Google. “We’ve put over 600 Black-owned businesses onto the shelves of our Pledge takers, but it takes more than access,” James said earlier that afternoon, shortly before slipping into a metallic floral dress by her friend Christopher John Rogers. “It also takes capital. It also takes resources. It also takes having someone to call that can help guide you through some of the things that you don’t know.”

Model Imaan Hammam. The setting inside the library. Aurora James, in a strapless floral dress by Christopher John Rogers, poses with (from left) Emma Grede, Selby Drummond, Karlie Kloss, and Ashley Graham.

    By Davis X Prutting/ BFA.

The event highlighted another means of visible support, with its reprised “black tie, Black designer” dress code. An expectant Hannah Bronfman turned up in a sequined two-piece by Harbison Studio. “I styled this not with the bump out, and Aurora was like, ‘No, we need more skin,’” she said with a cherry-red smile. “So here we are!” Sergio Hudson, whose label won the night’s second-prize $35,000 grant, wore a custom black-and-white striped jacket—his team’s first foray into menswear, using leftover fabric from his current collection—alongside a Schiaparelli brooch and earring. “Elsa Schiaparelli is my greatest design inspiration, so when they started releasing the jewelry, I slowly started collecting it,” Hudson said. No loaners here: “Of course I don’t borrow! I mean, I get enough people borrowing from me.” Brandon Blackwood, like so many attendees, had one of his bags in hand (“I love seeing them in the wild!”), topped off with a Yankees hat. And for Vogue global contributing fashion editor-at-large Gabriella Karefa-Johnson, dressed in a puff-sleeved look from her new Target capsule, it was a full-circle moment. “I wore Target x Peter Pilotto to my first interview with Anna Wintour because it was fashion that I could access,” she said. “The idea that, now, their collaborations are made with people like me, it feels like an actual commitment to building a more equitable industry.” She gestured toward her feather-bedecked shoes and bag, both by Brother Vellies. “Ms. James, she really does it up. You know, I love a little bit of gla-mour,” she added, leaning into the word as André Leon-Talley might have.

The prevailing mood was forward-looking: When James spoke of an economic future “with a smaller, and one day nonexistent, racial wealth gap,” the room broke out in applause. (The crab cake with fried green tomato—part of Sophia Roe’s menu curation—elicited the same reaction from nearby attendees.) But there was also a deep sense of gratitude for forebears. A statuesque Veronica Webb, who presented the Pioneer Award in Sergio Hudson, recalled being signed to Hardison’s agency at 19. “Bethann and I go back like parchment, like camel humps,” she said, describing her mentor as someone who “blazed a trail when it was dark—there was no path, there was nobody ahead of her.” Danessa Myricks, behind the industry-favorite makeup line, lifted up “all of my ancestors,” she said. “I’m giving credit to my parents, who didn’t have opportunities like this, who were cleaning floors, cleaning houses, working 24 hours a day so that I can be here.” Black Boy Knits creative director Jacques Agbobly cited their mother as an ongoing source of inspiration. After immigrating from Togo, she would go door to door to different hair shops as a braider, sometimes sleeping on-site to save money in order to bring her children to America. “Then, when we got here, I spent a lot of time with her in the hair shops. Those were very intimate and bonding moments for me and my family,” Agbobly said, drawing a connection between the evening’s green cable-knit sweater and the particularly intricate handwork by Slayed in Braids’ Helena Koudou.

The purpose of the Gala was to raise awareness about their efforts to end the dog meat trade, draw attention to their current and future campaigns within the US and raise money to continue the Foundation’s work. The Gala was a complete success – hundreds of people gathered together to celebrate dogs, and help improve the lives of abused and mistreated dogs both domestically and internationally.

The Gala’s red carpet kicked off at 6pm, with a beautiful candlelit cocktail hour and a silent auction. Celebrities and attendees bid on a variety of donated luxury items ranging from hotel stays to dog beds and luxury beauty packages. At 7:30pm the doors opened to a stunning ballroom complete with pink roses and candelabras for a dinner that included music, dancing, celebrity performances, celebrity speakers and an incredible Live Auction of one-of-a-kind experiences.

Mario Lopez, the event’s host for the second year in a row, began the evening and continued to host throughout the night. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation’s founder, Lisa Vanderpump, made a heart-wrenching and moving speech, while recapping the successes of the Foundation, including medical missions to Yulin, China, and Haiti, as well as sharing some of the incredible success stories of the 350 dogs adopted out since the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center opened on West 3rd Street in Los Angeles in March of 2017.

Honey was rescued from the Yulin Dog Meat Festival, and brought back to the Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center by the Executive Director of the Foundation, Dr. John Sessa, and has since been adopted by a loving, caring family.

    ABOUT THE VANDERPUMP DOG FOUNDATION

The Vanderpump Dog Foundation is a 501c3 non-profit dog rescue organization, working on both a domestic and international front to help create a better world for dogs globally. Founders Lisa Vanderpump & Ken Todd began the long journey towards trying to stop the barbaric torture practices at the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and end the dog meat trade in Asia, in 2015. Together with their partner Dr. John Sessa, they launched the campaign Stop Yulin Forever, which ultimately led them to create The Vanderpump Dog Foundation. The movement gained momentum and has inspired activists all over the world to work towards ending the Yulin Dog Meat Festival and encourage more humane treatment for dogs worldwide. The Vanderpump Dog Foundation was formed to not only aid in ending this international atrocity, but to also better the lives of dogs domestically. The United States faces many problems of its own including dog overpopulation, abuse, neglect and lack of education with regards to spaying and neutering pets. With the opening of their new Vanderpump Dog Rescue Center in LA, The Vanderpump Dog Foundation aims to reduce these problems within California and beyond, as well as continue their national and international campaigns built on a platform of education, legislation, and activism.
