  • ACMobility launches EV charging stations in Ayala Center Cebu

    ACMobility launches EV charging stations in Ayala Center Cebu

    ACMobility, the mobility arm of the Ayala Group, launched two electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in Ayala Center Cebu on April 29, 2024.

    Located on Basement 1 of the Ayala Center Cebu parking lot, the two charging stations are rated 22KW AC and are available for use by all EV owners whose vehicles carry a CCS2 and GB/T charging standard.

    The charging stations are a first for ACMobility in the province of Cebu and complement the recent launch of BYD Cebu, which aims to provide Cebuanos with access to quality, accessible electric vehicles. As of the end of April, ACMobility has 48 charging stations in 23 locations nationwide.

    Ayala Center Cebu charging stations will remain free throughout May. Operating hours follow Ayala Center Cebu mall hours of 10 A.M. to 9 P.M. on Sundays through Thursdays and 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. on Fridays and Saturdays, unless otherwise advised.

    The Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to support hyperscale data center industry stakeholders, alongside its public and private partners, by providing reliable energy infrastructure and solutions that help partners meet their growing needs.

    Data centers continue to grow steadily in the country as business demands necessitate more robust data management and efficient network expansion capabilities to support the scaling and strengthening of digital services amid a dynamic economic environment.

    With this increasing demand for digital service usage from internet connectivity, social media, e-commerce, and cloud/data, the Philippines is poised to become one of the strategic leading hyperscale hubs. 

    Additionally, the Philippines is strategically located in the Asia-Pacific region to service local and regional digital applications needed to compete in the fourth industrial revolution.     In a recently held executive roundtable entitled “Power up Talks: Powering Hyperscale Ecosystems in the Philippines,” Meralco assured stakeholders of its readiness and commitment to provide such solutions.

    Meralco senior vice president & chief revenue officer Ferdinand Geluz, in his opening message and introduction of the One Meralco Group, mentioned that as early as 2020, Meralco has been providing packaged solutions that cater to hyperscalers and data centers’ needs, including master planning, value engineering, timely energization, energy and demand management, Retail Competition and Open Access (RCOA) day one switch, and renewable solutions.

    “As we strategically position the country in this transformative space, we at Meralco dedicate ourselves to fortifying this growth engine,” Mr. Geluz said. “Last year alone, we energized hyperscale-ready data centers with an initial capacity of 22MW that can ramp up to 180MW. This service stresses our commitment to providing the critical power infrastructure essential for the seamless operation of these facilities. We now have more than 30 service applications in the pipeline with a total capacity of 1,200MW.”

    He also mentioned the company’s proactive approach to support the clean energy preferences of Meralco’s customers.

    “Among our top priorities, we are recalibrating our green energy supply portfolio to meet the clean energy preferences of our partners – a move that also aligns with the DOE’s push for renewable energy (RE) solutions and its aggressive development of RE in the Philippines,” Mr. Geluz emphasized. 

    Department of Energy undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara

    Department of Energy (DOE) undersecretary Rowena Cristina Guevara, in her keynote address, echoed this prioritization and expanded it, as it is a key factor in the intended development of the hyperscale data industry and the country’s economic growth in line with the Department’s Philippine Energy Plan. Usec. Guevara mentioned that the Department of Energy has implemented a range of plans, policies and programs designed to facilitate immediate and strategic investments in support of this energy transition directive to clean energy and aggressive RE development in the Philippines.

    Alongside the shift to clean energy is the government’s ongoing move towards digitalization with the launch of the e-Government app, the national ID roll out, and several initiatives for the full automation of national government services. In the forum, Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) undersecretary for E-Government David Almirol also underscored the need for more data centers in the country as most government agencies currently use overseas cloud services, which could lead to data privacy and cybersecurity risks.  

    Sharing how Meralco caters to the needs of both its public and private partners, Meralco executive vice president & chief operating officer Ronnie Aperocho discussed how the company can empower enterprises with seamless connectivity through redundant power infrastructure support and tailor-fit solutions. An integral part of Meralco’s commitment to support the hyperscale data center industry is addressing their key requirements for safe, adequate, reliable, affordable, and renewable energy. 

    “At the core of what we offer is Meralco’s expansive and high-performing electric distribution network, which serves as the vital energy infrastructure to address the huge electricity demand of hyperscale data centers.”

    He added, “Meralco can even provide data center facilities with power supply redundancy through a double feed from an equally reliable power source, resulting in even more outstanding service availability. With Meralco’s unwavering commitment to keeping the lights on, especially for the country’s critical digital infrastructure, more hyperscale data centers will soon be energized by Meralco.” 

    Mr. Aperocho also emphasized the company’s continued investments in smart and digital solutions – Smart Grid technologies that enable real-time monitoring and remote switching to minimize downtime and host an array of distributed energy resources that provide clean energy to power-hungry data centers.

    Microsoft announces AI skilling opportunities for 2.5 million people in the ASEAN region by 2025

    Microsoft announced a commitment to equip 2.5 million people in member states of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) with AI skills by 2025. The skilling initiatives will be implemented in partnership with governments, nonprofit and corporate organizations, and communities across Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

    Microsoft’s commitment aligns with the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025 to build an AI-ready talent pool in the region. It is also part of the company’s broader goal to empower individuals, organizations, and communities in ASEAN countries to harness the potential of AI to drive innovation and economic growth.

    Dr Piti Srisangnam, Executive Director of the ASEAN Foundation, said: “We appreciate Microsoft’s commitment to upskilling ASEAN youth in AI, a pivotal step aligning with the ASEAN Digital Masterplan 2025. By fostering a sustainable digital talent ecosystem, it will contribute significantly to our regional development.”

    Microsoft’s skilling commitment will focus on four areas: building an inclusive, AI-ready workforce; bridging the cybersecurity talent gap; enhancing developers’ AI skills; and empowering nonprofit organizations to maximize their social impact.

    These initiatives will build on Microsoft’s long history of helping to close the digital skills gap in ASEAN countries. Over the past two years, around 1.7 million people have participated in its Skills4Jobs program.

    Building an inclusive, AI-ready workforce

    The digital age demands skilled workers, and vocational institutes will be critical in providing practical training for industry-aligned needs and roles. Microsoft will help strengthen vocational education systems across the ASEAN region to provide AI skills in partnership with the ASEAN Foundation and education ministries in the 10 member states, which will benefit an estimated 644,000 vocational students.

    In the Philippines, Microsoft is committed to equipping 1 million Department of Education learners from kindergarten to grade 12 with AI and cybersecurity skills, ensuring their readiness for future careers and employment opportunities. Furthermore, Microsoft will strengthen its collaboration with the nation’s Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) by investing in a new initiative to equip 100,000 TESDA female learners with AI and cybersecurity skills. This will help foster a diverse talent pipeline for the country’s digital transformation.  

    Through the AI TEACH for Indonesia and AI TEACH Malaysia programs, Microsoft and the ASEAN Foundation will provide technical and vocational education and training students with AI skills. Microsoft is also training and educating 100,000 underserved youths and job seekers in AI, data, and security through its existing partnership with Kartu Prakerja, the largest pre-employment program in Indonesia.

    In addition, Microsoft is launching the AI Skills for the AI-enabled Tourism Industry program in partnership with Thailand’s Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Ministry of Labour, and the nation’s Technology Vocational Education Training Institute. The initiative will skill 100,000 young entrepreneurs involved in tourism businesses across minor-tier geographic provinces in all five regions of Thailand.

    Microsoft will also expand its partnership with the United Nations Development Programme Asia Pacific in Indonesia to Malaysia and Vietnam, helping 570,000 youth from underserved communities enhance their employability and work readiness through access to AI fluency skills.

    Helping bridge the cybersecurity talent gap 

    The Asia-Pacific region is experiencing the largest skills gap in its cybersecurity workforce globally, with a shortfall of 2.7 million people in 2023. At the same time, AI-powered security capabilities are becoming a necessity in the fight against modern-day cyber threats. 

    As part of its global Cybersecurity Skilling Initiative, Microsoft has designed and curated training programs with nonprofit organizations to help create alternative pathways for underrepresented youths into the cybersecurity industry.

    Enhancing developers’ AI skills to foster innovation

    To support the ASEAN region’s 7 million-strong developer community, Microsoft has launched the Asia AI Odyssey campaign, which highlights how Microsoft’s AI Applied Skills validate the specific technical competencies required to build transformative AI applications. The campaign is running across Asia and aims to train 30,000 developers in ASEAN countries, encouraging greater use of AI services in the digital economy.

    Empowering nonprofit organizations to maximize their social impact

    In June 2024, Microsoft will host its first Nonprofit Leaders’ Summit to equip 1,500 nonprofit employees with knowledge and skills in AI and digital technologies.

    Yamaha Motor Philippines just made the summer even hotter with FastFest at SM by the Bay on the weekend of May 4 and 5. The event celebrated the brand’s signature speed, which is exclusively experienced with its machines.

    Leading its lineup of motorcycles are the new Yamaha Sniper155 and Sniper155R. The Sniper155R has retained most of its advanced features, including its liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, 155cc single cylinder engine, now with a sportier and more masculine design as well as updated color and graphics combination. The new Sniper155R is now equipped with ABS.

    Making an appearance for the event were Yamaha Philippines Racing Team riders who are currently on a winning streak in the Asia Road Racing Championship and dominating the podium in the recent MotoIR Championship. McKinley Kyle Paz, April King Mascardo, and Gian Carlo Mauricio had their careers shaped by the legacy of the Yamaha Sniper, which has propelled them to become champions. They spoke fondly about their history with the machine and shared their excitement about the newest edition.

    As a surprise treat for all in attendance, Yamaha debuted the original soundtrack of Yamaha Racing Philippines named ‘Creating Champions’ by music artist and newest Yamaha Brand Ambassador, Nik Makino.

    A special test ride was held at Block 16 open parking. It had 11 turns and a straight measuring 111-meters long. The 431m track ensured that participants had a safe experience with maximum acceleration.

    Those who believe they have what it takes to go full throttle like a professional rider were able to test their skills at the Moto Trainer — the official MotoGP Simulator. Meanwhile, those who wanted a souvenir of cornering like a pro could have their photos taken at the Lean Angle Experience, where Yamaha Motorcycles were inclined to mimic racetrack cornering. 

    Yamaha also held a speed contest with the Dyno Shootout. It measured who had the fastest Yamaha Sniper and Mio Aerox based on top horsepower and torque. The motorcycle was strapped to a treadmill-like machine, and riders revved it to the max.  The winners didn’t just get bragging rights, they also received an all-expense paid trip to witness the MotoGP Pertamina Grand Prix of Indonesia on September 27-29.

    Yamaha continues to push the limits of their machines to deliver the best possible motorcycle. Whether it’s for riding above the rest everyday or creating champions on the racetrack Yamaha will, without question, unlock your speed.
