PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This week on FYI Philly, we are celebrating all the love for Valentine’s Day! We meet a couple marrying their food and cultures, sample some sweets for your sweetie, get the gift of experience and visit a chocolate and coffee house steeped in Italian Market history.

Casa Oui is a new spot in Queen Village for all-day dining, opened by longtime couple Christy Cheyne and Israel Nocelo.

The concept combines Israel’s penchant for Latin cuisine, as was the focus of his former Si Taqueria in South Philly, and Christy’s background in pastry-making, when she had Oui Bakery in Old City.

Now their talents and their cultures come together on a menu that goes from early-morning espresso bar and sweet treats, to evening cocktails and wine, with grill and raw bar specialties.

At the coffee counter, there are Valentines-themed specialties like the dark chocolate caramel sea salt latte.

You can get breakfast all day long. The favorite sandwich is the bacon, egg and cheese. For lunch, the Chubby panini, chock full of meat and veggies is a big hit.

Kyle Cuffie-Scott started the business as a small fundraiser after his cousin Darnel passed away due to AIDS complications.

Ten years later, there are now two brick-and-mortar locations named after Kyle’s cousin, and he says everything is made with love.

The Barnsboro Inn was built as a log cabin home in 1720, when what is now Sewell, New Jersey, was mostly wooded country.

John Barnes bought the place in the mid 1700’s, and in March of 1776, he petitioned the Gloucester County courts for a tavern license. It is New Jersey’s oldest continuously operating tavern.

Al Scuderi became the newest owner 4 years ago and has made it a family affair. Both of his sisters help with hosting and serving. His mom, Sandy Scuderi, is the decorator who is also in charge of their famous meatballs!

The Barnsboro Inn has a restaurant, a main bar, and the Tavern Bar, which is the original log cabin and the oldest part of the building.

Al brought in a new executive chef to elevate the menu. The bar includes an extensive collection of mocktails.

Kids eat free on Mondays, and there’s a pet-friendly patio in warmer weather with live local bands six days a week.

There’s a special menu Valentines weekend and a Galentine’s deal on Friday, the 13th.

Bring 4 of your girlfriends and you’ll get a free appetizer for the table.

The Museum of African American Art Collections, known as the MAAAC, has work from seven collectors on view now at the Germantown Historical Society.

Jiggetts loaned five works for the show, including Nail Head by artist Richard Gaines.

After collecting for more than 30 years, Jiggetts decided to take his private collection public by creating the MAAAC.

And he convinced other collectors to do the same. There are about 30 pieces in the show.

And admission is free to hopefully cultivate some new collectors.

  • FYI Philly | Kicking off America’s 250th celebration with new spots to eat and drink

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This week on FYI Philly, we’re kicking off our America 250th celebration with new spots to eat and shop in this special year.

Chef Chance Anies describes Manong as a Filipino Outback Steakhouse, a grill house that celebrates the chain restaurants where his mom worked while he was growing up.

The “family first” restaurant reflects his biracial background with American staples like chicken skewers grilled with banana ketchup barbecue sauce and house-made creamy pasta with American cheese and coconut milk Alfredo sauce.

His riff on a Bloomin’ Onion is made with enoki mushrooms and dubbed The Bloom Shroom.

There are more traditional Filipino dishes too. The Lechon liempo is a whole roasted pork belly.

Manong means elder brother in the Filipino Ilocano language. It’s the big brother to Chance’s first restaurant, Tabachoy, in Queen Village, which he opened more than six years ago as a food cart.

As Philadelphia prepares to welcome the world in 2026, Chance hopes Manong will be a destination, and he hopes diners will walk away having learned a piece of Filipino or Filipino American history.

Huda Burger is the second location for chef and owner Yehuda Sichel, who opened Huda in Rittenhouse Square in 2020.

The new Fishtown spot has a menu focused on smash burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries and milkshakes.

The key ingredient is the house made Japanese milk buns that are made with a seeded exterior at the Fishtown location. The bun was the genesis of the idea for the original sandwich spot.

Uchi is a sushi-focused concept that just opened their eighth location in the country, right here in Rittenhouse.

The brand was founded in Austin, Texas in 2003 by Chef Tyson Cole, a James Beard winner for ‘Best Chef Southwest’.

The word ‘uchi’ means ‘house’ in Japanese, referring to the little red house that was the very first Uchi.

The chef and his team present elegant dishes and drinks in an atmosphere that is Asian-inspired, with design touches that pay homage to a Philly sensibility.

A service hallmark of the brand is ‘omakase anywhere’, letting guests enjoy an omakase experience (chef-guided sushi courses) not just at the sushi bar, but anywhere they are seated.

La Maison Juane, a new French cafe in Rittenhouse, was opened by real estate agent Zahra Saeed out of her love of travel.

Zahra says that on her frequent trips to France, she found herself in Parisian cafes and hoped to bring that same vibe to Philadelphia.

Last October, she did exactly that, using Rival Bros coffee to craft specialty drinks like the tiramisu latte, which comes with a lady finger and mascarpone cream for dipping.

For tea lovers, you can try the blueberry fleur with a tart, financier, or macaron.

She hopes people feel transported to France when they visit the cafe and enjoy its ambiance.

  • Visions | Hispanic Heritage Month

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — This week on Visions, we are celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia is embracing Hispanic and Latino Catholics.

They has 37 parishes that celebrate Mass in Spanish. It is a number that continues to rise, reflecting the increasing influence of Hispanic and Latino Catholics in the area.

The overall number of Catholics in Philadelphia has dropped since 2007. But the number of Spanish-speaking parishioners is rising, which is helping the Catholic church in the area remain vibrant.

Along with Spanish-language masses, the Archdiocese offers bilingual services for preschoolers at Casa del Carmen. The space has been part of the Lawncrest neighborhood since 1954. Along with preschool, there is a baby boutique for young families, education opportunities like ESL classes and financial learning and they have a food pantry that provides nourishment for community members 3 days a week.

The longstanding relationship with Spanish-speaking Catholics continues to evolve and grow in Philadelphia.

  • The Slider Company makes chef-driven small sandwiches a specialty

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — The Slider Company is a Philly pop-up with a slogan that doubles as a greeting: servers start each order with the phrase, “How you slidin’ today?’

Co-founders William R. Johnson, Jr. and Anesha Garrett developed the business as a spot for elevated sliders, and not just burgers. Their menu includes varieties of sliders from chicken to shrimp, with chef touches like paprika-garlic spices, and a chipotle-lime slaw.

Sides and beverages are also on tap, and the current location has games for kids of all ages, plus water for pets. The current pop-up location at The Meadows by NKDCD runs through November 2025, in a park-like setting complete with a vintage Philadelphia trolley.

The business is also in residence at The Luxe apartment building at 1705 N. American Street, and will be moving to a permanent brick-and-mortar in the spring at 2043 Frankford Avenue, just steps away from the park.
