    These In-N-Out Animal Style Burger Fries are a way of enjoying my favorite items from In-N-Out but at home. In this recipe, crispy shoestring French fries are topped with seasoned ground beef, melty cheese, copycat In-N-Out spread and finely diced caramelized onions. Yields 6 to 8 servings, depending.

    Craving In-N-Out? Make these fries.

    It starts with shoestring French fries (although, I have made this with roasted baby potatoes as well) topped with cheese, seasoned ground beef, more cheese, my homemade version of In-N-Out spread and caramelized onions. It’s a fun snack or meal even – we’ve had it both ways. We like them as you see here, but fee free to top with your favorite burger toppings, like chopped pickle, onion and tomato.

    My only wish is that one day In-N-Out will be out east – Michigan/metro Detroit area precisely. However in the meantime, we have these fries! Seriously, they’re so darn good! Now grab a couple forks and dig in.

    To Make These In-N-Out Burger Fries You Will Need:

    • French friesUse homemade or store- bought. We like shoestring style fries best.
    • unsalted butterAdds richness and flavor.
    • oilUse extra light olive oil or avocado oil.
    • yellow onionUse 1 large or 2 medium.
    • kosher saltHelps to soften the onions while cooking.
    • lean ground beefI like to use lean ground beef, however use what you prefer.
    • au jus gravy mixUse homemade or store-bought.
    • American cheeseOr use cheese of choice if preferred.
    • In-N-Out SpreadIt’s not animal style without it.

    Make The In-N-Out spread:

    Quickly whip up the In-N-Out spread and keep it refrigerated until ready to use. You can even make this a day in advance.

    Make The French Fries:

    You can use frozen fries or make your own. You could even roast baby potatoes (tossed in a little oil and roast at 400°F/200°C for 20ish minute) and use those as well for more of a burger bowl situation. Once the fries are crisp, remove from oven and season with salt to taste.

    Make The Caramelized Onions:

    I also like to start the onions at the same time as the fries. In a large sauté pan, add 2 teaspoons oil, 2 tablespoons butter and 1 large finely diced yellow onion.

    Heat on medium to medium-low, sautéing until deeply golden and caramelized. This takes the most time, so I like to make it while I start the fries.

    In another large pan, add 2 teaspoons oil and 1 pound lean ground beef. Use a wooden spatula to break up the ground beef, cooking until fully cooked and no longer pink.

    Once fully cooked, drain off fat and discard fat. Add 1-1/2 tablespoons aus jus gravy mix in with the cooked ground beef, stir well to combine.

    Move your oven rack about 6 inches away from the heating element and preheat your broiler to high.

    Divide the cooked fries among 2 quarter sheet pans or use one large rimmed baking sheet. Don’t be like me and use parchment paper! Broiler + parchment is not a great idea. Clearly I was more worried about aesthetics and easy clean up.😂

    Top with a couple slices of American cheese (on both pans) and slip under the broiler until melted watch carefully to avoid burning!

    Divide the seasoned ground beef among both pans.

    Top with more slices of cheese.

    And slip under the broiler until melted. Again, watch carefully!

    Lastly, top with desired amount of the spread and then divide the caramelized onions and sprinkle them over top.

    Serve immediately while the fries are hot. With forks. Forks are a must.

    • 28 ounces shoestring French fries
    • 1 large yellow onion, finely diced
    • 4 teaspoons avocado oil, or extra light olive oil, divided
    • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • kosher salt
    • 1 pound lean ground beef, I use 93
    • tablespoons au jus gravy mix
    • 11 to 12 slices American cheese, or cheese of choice
    • 1 recipe In-N-Out Spread

    MAKE THE FRIES:

    • You can use frozen fries (following package directions) or make your own. You could even roast baby potatoes (see notes). and use those as well for more of a burger bowl. Once roasted season with salt to taste.

    MAKE THE CARAMELIZED ONIONS:

    • In a large sauté pan, add 2 teaspoons oil, butter and finely diced yellow onion. Heat on medium to medium-low, sautéing until deeply golden and caramelized. This takes the most time, so I like to make it while I start the fries.

    MAKE THE “BURGER”:

    • In another large pan, add 2 teaspoons oil and the lean ground beef. Use a wooden spatula to break up the ground beef, cooking until fully cooked and no longer pink. Once fully cooked, drain off fat and discard fat. Add the aus jus gravy mix in with the cooked ground beef, stir well to combine.

    MAKE THE IN-N-OUT BURGER FRIES:

    • Move your oven rack about 6-inches away from the heating element and preheat your broiler to high. Divide the cooked fries among 2 quarter sheet pans (or 1 larger pan). Top with a couple slices of American cheese (on both pans) and slip under the broiler until melted watch carefully to avoid burning!

    • Divide the seasoned ground beef among each pan, spooning it onto of the cheesy fries. Top with the rest of the slices of cheese. Slip under the broiler until melted. Again, watch carefully!

    • Lastly, top with desired amount of sauce/spread and then divide the caramelized onions and add them on top.

    • Serve immediately while the fries are hot!

    If you’re looking for a reason to get an air fryer, I have two words for you:

    French. Fries.

    In this recipe, russet potatoes are cut into typical French fry shape, sprayed with olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper or any other seasoning you desire. Then off to the air fryer and in under 20 minutes, you’ll have deliciously crispy fries ready to dip in ketchup (or ranch).

    These freshly made french fries are made lighter and healthier in the air fryer, and I can promise you that equally as addictive as their deep-fried counterpart.

    To Make These Homemade Air Fryer French Fries You Will Need:

    • russet potatoesI try to find short squatty potatoes to avoid overly long French fries.
    • olive oil sprayMay also substitute with avocado oil or ghee oil spray.
    • kosher saltEnhances the flavor of the fries.
    • freshly ground black pepperThis is optional, however will add some subtle bite and flavor.
    • additional seasonings (optional) – Use spices like garlic powder, onion powder, cayenne or all-purpose seasoning salt or old bay seasoning.

    Scrub 1 to 1-1/2 pound russet potatoes and pat dry with a kitchen towel. Slice the potato into 1/4-inch thick slices.

    Then cut each slice into 1/4-inch sticks or fries.

    NOTE: If you have time you can always soak your potatoes before air-frying. Otherwise move on to the next step.

    How To get Cripier French Fries?

    Soak the fries in a bowl filled with cold water for 30 minutes or up to 24 hours. If soaking for longer than 2 hours, I personally would refrigerate. Simply drain and then use a clean kitchen towel pat them dry before tossing in oil and any seasonings. This is optional and will add extra time, but can be skipped if crunched for time.

    Why Is It Important to Soak Potatoes in Water When Making French Fries?

    Believe it or not, soaking in water will remove the starch from the potato/fries. This in turn will then help the fries crisp up even more. The starch in the potatoes that hangs onto moisture/water and is why potatoes are soggy when baked! I also notice my fries don’t burn as easily when I soak them, due to having less starch I presume. When you go to drain the potatoes/fries you will see that the water is cloudy and starchy looking.

    Add the potatoes to a large mixing bowl and mist with olive oil spray until evenly coated. Season with a few pinches kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper.

    Preheat your air-fryer to 350℉ (or 180℃).

    What Is Air Frying?

    • An air fryer is a counter top appliance that requires less oil (anything from a few spritz to 1 tablespoon) yet produces crispy food that rivals most deep fried foods. By using circulating hot air, it moves at a high speed so the food tends to cook in a fraction of the time.
    • There are a bunch of different makes and models of air fryers. My husband did the research (as he’s known to do) and found this air fryer [affiliate] to be one of the best. But do your research and purchase one that fits your lifestyle.

    How is Air Frying Healthier?

    • Air frying is healthier because only a thin layer of oil coats the food and when the hot air comes in contact it will crisp. Saving you a ton of fat and calories (without sacrificing any flavor!) because food is not being submerged in a vat of hot oil.
    • Keep in mind, not all air fryers are equal. Some preheat and some do not. Some are smaller than others therefore you may need to work in smaller batches to air fry.

    Once preheated, add the potatoes in somewhat of an even layer in the basket of your air fryer and air fry for 9 minutes.

    After the 9 minutes, shake the fries and air fry for another 6 to 9 minutes, depending on how done you want the exterior of your fries. I like the 6 to 7 mark.

    Note that the smaller fries will be done before the bigger ones so remove those to avoid burning. When the fries are done, transfer them to a wire rack and repeat with any remaining potatoes.

    Before serving, add the fries back into the air fry and reheat for 2 minutes or until hot. If you’re wondering why there’s so many fries, I made a triple batch 🙊

    There’s a restaurant chain called Bagger Dave’s. Besides having the some of best burgers (and chipotle sauce), they also make really good fries. And to me, these homemade air fryer French fries tastes JUST like them!

    Crispy Air Fryer French Fries

    • Meanwhile, sliced the potatoes into 1/4-inch slices and then cut each slice into 1/4-inch strips. (see notes)

    • In a large bowl, add the potato “fries” and spray with oil until coated evenly. Toss with a few pinches kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

    • Preheat your air-fryer to 350℉ (or 180℃).

    • Use tongs to arrange the potates in the bottom of your air-fryers basket.

    • Air-fry for 9 minutes, shake the basket and rearrange the potatoes in a single layer*. Continue air-frying for 6 to 9 minutes more. You may need to work in 2 separate batches.

    • Transfer the crispy fries to a wire rack set before repeating. Note: The smaller fries might be done after the first 9 minutes or halfway through the second set of 9 minutes. Check often to avoid burning.

    • Once all the fries are brown, throw them back into the air fryer and reheat for 1 to 2 minutes.

    For Crispier French Fries:

    Jan. 13, 2023 – A new study that shows the harm to the liver of eating fast food might provide people with motivation to eat less of it in the new year. 

    The study found that eating at least 20% of total daily calories from fast food can increase the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, a potentially life-threatening condition where fat builds up in the liver. The disease can lead to cirrhosis and its complications, including liver failure and liver cancer. 

    People with obesity or diabetes are more vulnerable to the harmful effects of fast food on the liver, although the general population is not immune to the harm. 

    “My hope is that this study encourages people to seek out more nutritious, healthy food options,” says lead investigator Ani Kardashian, MD, with Keck Medicine at the University of Southern California.  

    “At a policy level, public health efforts are needed to improve access to affordable, healthy, and nutritious food options across the U.S. This is especially important as more people have turned to fast foods during the pandemic and as the price of food as risen dramatically over the past year due to food inflation,” she says. 

    The researchers analyzed data on diet and fatty liver measurements for nearly 4,000 adults.

     Nearly 30% of them got 20% or more of their total daily calories from fast food, such as burgers, fries, pizza, and the like. 

    They found that people with obesity or diabetes who take in one-fifth or more of their daily calories from fast food had severely high levels of fat in their liver, compared with those who eat less or no fast food.

    The general population had moderate increases in liver fat when one-fifth or more of their diet was made up of fast food. 

    The findings are particularly “alarming” given the increase in fast-food consumption over the past 50 years, regardless of socioeconomic status, Kardashian says. 

    “If people eat one meal a day at a fast-food restaurant, they may think they aren’t doing harm. However, if that one meal equals at least one-fifth of their daily calories, they are putting their livers at risk,” she says. 

    For people who have limited options and need to eat fast food, “there are healthy choices at most restaurants; you just need to be smart about reading labels, watching calories, and ordering the healthier options,” says Nancy Reau, MD, with Rush University Medical Center in Chicago,  who wasn’t involved in the study.

    Lisa Ganjhu, DO, with NYU Langone Health in New York City, agrees. 

    “I am a firm believer that fast food can cause fatty liver. It goes hand in hand, and I counsel and coach my patients on healthy diet and exercise, and I’ve been pretty successful,” she says. 

    “If my patient is eating at McDonald’s a lot, I basically walk through the menu with them and help them find something healthy. When patients see the benefits of cutting out fat and reducing carbohydrate, they are more apt to continue,.”
