Poor Matthew Perry.
The Friends star died so young at just 54 years old, robbing the world of any more brilliant performances. The biggest tragedy, though, was that the lovelorn comic genius never found his one true love.

But he certainly tried! Perry dated some of the most beautiful and talented women in the world — so many you may even have missed some!
Get the full list of his complicated dating history below…
This was one that really caught us off guard!
Matthew Perry wrote about having a little summer fling with Gwyneth Paltrow in his tell-all, back before they were both huge stars! She revealed more about it in her tribute to him, writing:
“I met Matthew Perry in 1993 at the Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. We were both there for most of the summer doing plays. He was so funny and so sweet and so much fun to be with. We drove out to swim in creeks, had beers in the local college bar, kissed in a field of long grass. It was a magical summer.”
Just over a year later he would be a household name on Friends — and so would she soon enough, thanks to roles in films like Seven.

Julia was already one of the biggest movie stars in the world when Matthew reached out to her. They had a before-its-time romance, using fax machines back and forth all day to essentially text one another in 1995! After speaking on the phone for the first time — for five hours straight — they knew it was the real deal.
As big a deal as it was in the media, the relationship sadly only lasted about six months. Perry blames himself entirely; he wrote in his memoir, Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing:
“Dating Julia Roberts had been too much for me. I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unloveable… So instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts.”
Tragically, Perry’s death fell on a day that may haunt Julia — her birthday, October 28.

Remember on Friends when Chandler drools over Baywatch babe Yasmine Bleeth? Well, this is how big a cultural impact Friends had immediately — he actually dated her IRL in 1996. Guess she was a fan of the show… and liked what she saw!
It was just a brief fling for Matthew — unlike Chandler, who continued to crush on her for years afterward!

Matthew made a pretty underrated gem of a rom com with Neve Campbell in 1998 called Three To Tango. The chemistry apparently extended beyond the screen, with the pair reportedly having an on-set romance. But it didn’t last — by the time the movie came out in 1999, they had already moved on.
It’s also possible she was his “one that got away”…
In his memoir, Matthew refers to a lost love he “never got over.” He doesn’t name her but says she was an actress he met on the set of a movie in 1999. Unfortunately it didn’t work out when she made it clear his “drinking was a problem” and “picked another guy.” He wrote that the breakup “still hurts” — that was over two decades later.
Fans suspect it was Neve because it was the only movie he made that came out that year. It would have filmed in 1998, but it’s assumed he just got the dates a little off. Then again…

For most of 1999, Matthew Perry dated actress René Ashton. They were basically inseparable that whole year!
René seems to be the only other option for that breakup that “still hurts”. He didn’t make a movie with her, but it’s possible he was referring to meeting an actress who wasn’t working on the movie? They were together a long time — and it was while before his next romance…

Matthew dated soap star Maeve Quinlan from 2002 to 2003. It’s unknown why he and the Bold and the Beautiful actress split, but they seemed to have an amicable breakup as they were seen together years later getting along.

In 2003, Matthew was rumored to have a brief fling with Heather Graham. Neither he nor the Austin Powers: The Star Who Shagged Me star ever confirmed this, but they were seen together A LOT for a couple weeks. Then she moved on to Edward Burns, and he moved on to…

Two Grahams in a row? Well, not exactly. This seemed to be a romantic near-miss for both parties.
Matthew and Lauren Graham met in 2003 and were linked in the media. But were they ever really a couple? The apparently flirted up a storm but just couldn’t get things together! In her own memoir, Talking As Fast As I Can, the Gilmore Girl explains Matthew was her “Friend Who I Almost But Never Exactly Dated” or her “FWIABNED.”
They kept a good friendship, though, even if it never quite materialized into something real. They went on to star in multiple TV and film projects together through the years.

Matthew’s next big relationship was with a young Brit named Rachel Dunn. It was serious enough that, unlike most of his relationships, which he kept very close to the chest, he actually spoke about it publicly! In a 2004 piece in the Evening Standard, he gushed:
“With Rachel in my life, I know that I can be very committed and not some selfish guy who just wants to hang out with friends. I want to spend time with my girlfriend and explore what it means to have a much closer relationship than I’ve previously had time for.”
Perhaps it was the fact she was in his life right at the end of Friends, and he suddenly had enough time to really devote to a personal life? There was even talk of marriage, but it didn’t last. They called it quits in 2005.

We wouldn’t so much say Matthew Perry “dated” Cameron Diaz as he went on A DATE with her. And it did not go well!
In Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing, Matty revealed he was set up with the Holiday star in 2007, apparently right after her breakup with Justin Timberlake. He got the sense she “wasn’t interested” in the setup at all and that she got “immediately stoned.” Even worse, she hit him!
As he remembers it, he said “something witty” to her during a game of Pictionary, and she went to punch him in the shoulder playfully — and nailed him in the face instead! If you’ve seen the Charlie’s Angels films, you have to imagine that punch HURT! He recalls responding:
“Are you f**king kidding me?”
Like we said, there wasn’t a second date! Hey, sometimes two people might be amazing individually — just not so much together, and they just don’t connect! The next one though…

This was a big one. THE big one, as it turns out.
Matty was with Lizzy Caplan for about SIX WHOLE YEARS, from around 2007 to 2012! This time Matthew went back to keeping it private — neither gave an interview about it the entire time they were dating OR even after!
But in his book, the Whole Nine Yards star reveals just how close it got. He says he was planning to propose but just never got to it — and she ended up marrying some British guy. (Lizzy married Tom Riley in 2017.) The next time it was that serious, Matthew WOULD propose.

The last big relationship Perry would ever get the chance for was with a talent manager named Molly Hurwitz. They dated for a couple years starting in 2018, and the sitcom star DID pop the question. The two were engaged about a year before they ended things in 2021.
Neither said much about the relationship of the breakup, with Perry simply saying:
“Sometimes things just don’t work out and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best.”
However, in her social media tribute to her ex after his passing, Molly wrote about how she admired his “brilliance” and had a “magical” time with him. She also said he was “complicated” and caused her a lot of pain. Ultimately we got the idea this was a tough relationship with a troubled artist.
There seems to be some disagreement though, as some of Perry’s friends have come out since to call Hurwitz a “con artist” and to say Matty hated her in the end! Whoa! Maybe not so amicable…
Sadly, though Matthew was said to still be looking for the one right up until his passing, he never did settle down.

African producer Nitefreak recently reunited with Afro-house collective helmed by Sean Thomas AKA &friends and key vocal collaborator Phina Asa for a joint-release entitled “Ike Onu”, to make their debut via acclaimed international dance brand Tomorrowland’s record imprint.
This formal collaborative production between Nitefreak and &friends follows up the success of Nitefreak’s remix of &friends’ pivotal single “Ode Ireti” ft. Oluwadamvic and eL-Jay. The remix saw unprecedented, viral success – receiving massive radio and touring support from top names in the space including Keinemusik, the infectious chorus “o-le-le” has become a staple in the sets of many titans of dance music.
“Ike Onu” means “Stronger Together” in the native African language of Igbo. The song is smooth and soulful, with Phina Asa’s vocals making their way back to the &friends soundwaves for the third time this year, following up her first single “Dangerous” and the projects’ Armada Music debut with an official cover of Armin Van Buuren’s “This Is What It Feels Like”.
The poignant percussion of the track boasts both signature sonic elements that belong to both &friends and Nitefreak all on their own, but find their way to the same track in perfect harmony. The lyrics of the song are heartfelt, reflecting on the challenges of the modern world while recognizing the complexity of life and importance of unity and collaboration for growth and resilience. The meaning of the track aptly demonstrates the continued creative partnership that has helped put both Nitefreak and &friends’ productions on a world stage.
Sharing on the lyrics of the track, Phina Asa says “The idea behind this song was that I thought about the world today, and how it doesn’t look how it used to. It’s getting more challenging and complex, and in life we can’t thrive on our own without any help. We need people to support us, push us, hold us accountable, and help us grow.”
2023 is already delivering a thoughtfully produced, artfully composed compilation of works from both Nitefreak and &friends respectively. Through a holistic, multifaceted approach, both artists are set to make their way to even more dance floors around the world to unite us all.

Matthew Perry‘s shocking death at just 54 years old has hit us all hard. It’s never been clearer just how much everyone loved the Whole Nine Yards star.
But of course the loss is a thousand times more palpable for those who knew the man, not just the icon. One of those folks is the woman who was almost his wife. Molly Hurwitz dated the Friends alum from 2018 to 2021. For roughly the last third of their three years together they were engaged to be married — before they broke it off unexpectedly.

Neither Matthew nor Molly has spoken much about the relationship or the breakup since. But of course even though it’s been two years since they split up, the loss is hitting the talent manager hard. In pics obtained by The US Sun, she was spotted out walking her dog with friends in the park in Los Angeles on Sunday, seemingly having a rough time. She was even seen crying. You can find those HERE. But her statement offers more clarity than we’ve ever gotten, not just about how she feels now but the breakup as well.
She took to Instagram with a poignant statement about her former love, starting:
“He would love that the world is talking about how talented he was. And he really was very talented. As the Friends reunion was approaching, we rewatched the show together. ‘F**k, I was so good!!!…See what I did there???’ We rewound and studied scenes. Our respect and appreciation of humor is something that connected us. Being with him as he rediscovered his brilliance was magical.”
That was what we all got from Matthew Perry the comedy star. The other side of the coin is something very few ever saw. She continued:
“But, I obviously knew that man in a very different way, too. While I loved him deeper than I could comprehend, he was complicated, and he caused pain like I’d never known. No one in my adult life has had a more profound impact on me than Matthew Langford Perry. I have tremendous gratitude for that, for everything I learned from our relationship.”
She added, to make it clear the big source of a lot of that pain:
“I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Al Anon, an invaluable resource for those who love someone struggling with this destructive disease.”
Yeah. Al Anon. Clearly Matthew’s ongoing struggle with addiction and recovery was a large contributor to the pain in his life and in hers for those years. She concluded:
“Matty, I feel relief that you are at peace.”
Heartbreaking.

The surviving cast of the hit sitcom Friends say they are mourning the “unfathomable” death of their co-star Matthew Perry over the weekend.
Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, and David Schwimmer released a joint statement to People, CNN and the BBC late Monday that marked their first comments since Perry was found dead in his Los Angeles home on Saturday at age 54.
“We are all so utterly devastated by the loss of Matthew,” the statement signed by the five actors said. “We were more than just cast mates. We are a family.”
The co-stars said they would have more to say about Perry and his death “as and when we are able,” adding they were sending their thoughts and love to Perry’s family, friends and fans.
“There is so much to say, but right now we’re going to take a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss,” the statement said.
Global News has not independently received the statement.
The cause and manner of Perry’s death are still being determined by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office, following the completion of an autopsy with toxicology tests.
Perry’s death came one year after the publication of his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, which chronicled his decades-long struggle with addiction to prescription painkillers and alcohol. At the time, Perry said he had been sober for about 18 months.
Perry, Aniston, Cox, Kudrow, LeBlanc and Schwimmer were catapulted to worldwide fame shortly after Friends debuted in 1994. The sitcom remained a highly watched hit throughout its 10 seasons and remains popular on streaming.
The cast reunited for a reunion special in 2021 on HBO Max where Perry talked about their continued bond, which lasted well beyond the end of the show.
“The best way that I can describe it is after the show was over, at a party or any kind of social gathering, if one of us bumped into each other, that was it. That was the end of the night. You just sat with the person all night long and that was it,” Perry said.
“You apologized to the people you were with, but they had to understand you had met somebody special to you and you were going to talk to that person for the rest of the night,” he continued. “And that’s the way it worked.”
The co-creators of Friends, Marta Kauffman and David Crane, as well as executive producer Kevin Bright, wrote in a statement that they “are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing.”
Several actors who co-starred on Friends have shared tributes to Perry since his death on Saturday including Paul Rudd, Paget Brewster and Aisha Tyler.
Morgan Fairchild, who played mother to Perry’s Chandler Bing on the show, and Maggie Wheeler, who played Chandler’s sometime girlfriend Janice, also expressed their heartbreak.
“The world will miss you Matthew Perry,” Wheeler wrote in a message on Instagram.
“The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on,” she added. “What a loss.”

Adele paid tribute to Matthew Perry shortly after his death was announced.
On Saturday night, the singer paused her Las Vegas residency show before singing When We Were Young to honor the Friends alum, who brought her a ton of “joy” throughout her life. Noting that she’s never personally met the actor, she shared with the crowd in a clip posted to X (Twitter):
“It’s always quite shocking when [someone dies], especially someone that made you laugh, who brought so much joy to your life, that you don’t know — this is what I find so strange. I’ve never met him in my life. … You feel so sad about it, especially since you don’t necessarily know what was going on.”
So many people grew up with Matthew on TV, building a unique bond with him and his character! It makes a death like this all the more shocking and tough to get over. We get what she’s feeling!

Like many Friends fans, the Grammy winner found so much comfort in Matthew’s hilarious character Chandler Bing. She went on to say some of her “favorite memories” are when she was around 12 and her friend Andrew would do the “best Chandler impression” to cheer her and her friends up whenever they were “having a bad day or feeling low,” adding:
“I’ll remember that character for the rest of my life.”
Aw!
The mother of one also praised the Fools Rush In star for being so candid about his addiction struggles — and for someone who just announced she quit drinking three months ago, she understands some of what he was going through. She said:
“He was so open with his struggles with addiction and sobriety, which I think is incredibly, incredibly brave, and yeah, I just wanna say how much I love what he did for us, especially what he did for me. One of the best comedic characters of all time, and hopefully, now he can rest in peace.”
Well said!
Just goes to show that this death has affected so many — from his loved ones, to close friends (and exes), and to fans of all kinds. Hear Adele’s emotional tribute (below):

So lovely to honor him on what would have been just hours after the news broke.
As Perezcious readers know, the actor died earlier on Saturday when his assistant found him unconscious in his jacuzzi after playing a few hours of pickleball. A cause of death is under investigation but no foul play is suspected and illicit drugs weren’t found at the scene (though he did have some prescription meds).
Sending our love to all those mourning. R.I.P.

Fans of the sitcom Friends and plenty of other projects have been mourning the death of Matthew Perry. While he’s best known for the role of Chandler Bing, he’s been in tons of other big roles. In the gaming community, he’s best known as Benny from Fallout: New Vegas. While he largely stuck to sitcoms, whether that’s acting, producing, or directing, he also worked in sportscasting and feature films.
Perry grew up in Massachusetts, before moving to Los Angeles. Shortly after moving, he began to go to auditions and got roles as a child actor. There was also something else going on in his early life though. He began drinking at 14 and was drinking every day by the time he hit 18 years old. Luckily, it wouldn’t really affect his work on Friends, but he would occasionally show up to the set hungover and shaking.

Unfortunately, on October 28, 2023, Perry was found unresponsive in the hot tub at his Los Angeles house. He was pronounced dead at the age of 54. Since then, Friends fans have begun to congregate at 90 Bedford Street, the building in New York City’s West Village that served as the iconic exterior for the apartment building on Friends. (The actual apartments populated by Chandler, Joey, Monica, and the rest were built on soundstages.)
Friends fanatics have been leaving everything from bouquets of flowers to personal tributes on the street corner of Bedford and Grove, outside the building at 90 Bedford. One Friends fan said of the show to the New York Post, “All of them, especially Matthew, help me through the darkest time in my life.” As tragic as Perry’s untimely passing is, it is nice to see what he meant to millions of people around the world.

Matthew Perry, best known for playing the iconic Chandler Bing on Friends, sadly died at the weekend.
The actor, 54, was found unresponsive at his Los Angeles home on Saturday (October 28), with police reportedly called following a report of a cardiac arrest. It is reported he died by drowning in his jacuzzi in his back garden.
What’s more, subsequent reports have indicated initial post-mortem results are “inconclusive” and Matthew‘s cause of death is yet to be determined.
And while every role he played throughout his career went down a storm with fans, it was his performance as the sarcastic, but ultimately lovable Chandler that propelled him to stardom.
Friends debuted back in 1994 and ran for a whopping 10 series’ – and Matthew was there every step of the way. That’s why we’re paying tribute to Matthew with his best episodes of Friends, ranked according to IMBD ratings.

At this point in the show, Chandler and Monica were secretly dating but didn’t want their pals to know about it. However, Phoebe and Rachel soon twigged and attempted to get them to confess their relationship.

It was an emotional episode that saw Monica and Chandler pack up their apartment ahead of their move to a brand new house. And in typical Joey fashion, as a leaving present he buys Chandler a new chick.

In this episode, Chandler and Joey compete against Monica and Rachel to see which pair knows the other best. The end results is an iconic apparent swap.

The gang all watch a video from Monica and Rachel’s prom in this episode. Meanwhile Chandler is given a hideous bracelet by Joey.

For this Thanksgiving episode, Monica throws a party and invites Will, an old school friend of her and Ross. But it turns out he isn’t too fond of Rachel.

In this two-part episode, Chandler prepares to propose to Monica during a romantic dinner. However, in the end, she ends up proposing to him in super adorable scenes.

Chandler and Monica head back home after their honeymoon, thinking they had made new friends on the plane. But that’s not the case.

For this episode, couple Chandler and Monica are visited by her parents. But to make things awkward, her parents have no idea they are together because they’re not keen on Chandler.

Fans had their mouths on the floor watching this episode, when amid Ross’ wedding to Emily, Monica and Chandler sleep together.

After having doubts about getting married to Monica, Chandler goes AWOL. He is eventually found and the pair tie the knot.

While Matthew Perry, like his other fellow Friends cast members (mainly Jennifer Aniston), may have been able to secure enough film work in the 90s and 00s to pass as an actor beyond the realm of mere sitcom television, there’s no denying that he will always be known as Chandler Bing. A.k.a.: the sarcastic, perennially joke-making, lovable lout of the friend group. The “shtick” wasn’t so bad though—it allowed Perry to live off the cush royalties (upwards of twenty million dollars a year) of said show whenever things might have gotten dire. Which they often did when it came to Perry’s patchy filmography (anyone who was ever subjected to, say, Three to Tango or Serving Sara would happily love to forget they ever saw it).
Matthew Perry’s spirit animal (literally), BoJack Horseman (voiced by Will Arnett), has his own questionable filmography (*cough cough* Secretatiat) outside of the TV series that made him a household name in the 90s, Horsin’ Around. And, like Perry, he’s constantly struggling with his various drug-related addictions. Not to mention bearing the personality of someone both self-loathing and narcissistic. A common combination among those “Hollywood people.”
Patty Lin, a former Friends writer who recently released the memoir End Credits: How I Broke Up With Hollywood, was sure to confirm the absurd narcissism and overall egocentricity of not just Perry, but each cast member when she rehashed, “The actors seemed unhappy to be chained to a tired old show when they could be branching out, and I felt like they were constantly wondering how every given script would specifically serve them. They all knew how to get a laugh, but if they didn’t like a joke, they seemed to deliberately tank it, knowing we’d rewrite it. Dozens of good jokes would get thrown out just because one of them had mumbled the line through a mouthful of bacon.”
BoJack’s approach to Horsin’ Around was largely the same, sleepwalking through the filming of the episodes, knowing the money was all but assured to roll in. After all, schlocky, “one size fits all” humor was spun gold in the 90s, and especially in the world of 90s broadcast television. As for Horsin’ Around, its premise was more closely aligned with a show like Punky Brewster (Horsin’ did, after all, premiere in 1987) or Full House. The family angle of both of these latter series playing up the idea that, sometimes, family isn’t who you’re born to, it’s who you choose. Friends essentially provided the same premise, proffering that, in a city like “New York” (or rather, New York as presented on a Burbank backlot), the likelihood of the people who moved there being in search of fresh start from the horrors of their suburban lives was bound to translate into the aforementioned cheeseball adage about how family is who you choose in the form of friends.
That sentiment became especially meta on Friends, with the cast members themselves forging a bond as a result of a shared experience that no one else could ever possibly understand (you know, the same type of bond forged between The Beatles or the Spice Girls as a result of becoming such cultural phenomenons). For BoJack, the cast member he shares a close bond with is Sarah-Lynn (Kristan Schaal). Although much younger than he is (a child star, as it were) at the start of filming Horsin’ Around, the two stay connected not just through the success of the show, but a shared substance abuse problem. One that BoJack helps to spur on with his generally bad, self-esteem-lowering advice. For yes, as it is said, “Misery loves company.” It is his negative influence over her, in fact, that leads to her eventual death by overdose.
Perry, of course, was known instead for talking people down from the ledge of their addiction issues, making an enduring commitment to helping those going through the same hell he went through, too. So, sure, Perry might have been a more altruistic, “good-hearted” 90s TV actor, but he shares BoJack’s painkiller-addicted ways, self-deprecating sense of humor and, famously, inability to maintain romantic relationships for very long. Much the same as BoJack—even though looking at Perry’s dating history read’s like a who’s who of 90s Hollywood (e.g., Yasmine Bleeth and Julia Roberts)—he appeared unable to make any sustained connection for very long (save for a six-year stint with Lizzy Caplan).
Perhaps this was a testament to his own fraught childhood, wherein he was unable to ever fully emotionally attach in a manner that wasn’t, at best, avoidant. This was all but assured with his parents’ divorce before he was even sentient, slowly “coming to” in a house divided. One that included both of his parents soon having other children with their new spouses. Perry, consequently, discovered the art of acting out (and acting) early on, drinking alcohol, stealing money and, of all things, beating up his fellow classmate, Justin Trudeau. In many regards, Perry bore all the cliches of the type of James Spader douchebag presented in numerous 80s movies (rounded out by the fact that Perry attended the Buckley School in Los Angeles). At least in the days before he physically evolved into a man with a slightly less, let’s say, “Bret Easton Ellis circa Less Than Zero’s release” aesthetic.
With each TV star having to constantly contend with their irrepressible demons (cropping up much too early in their lives), it is BoJack who has the more straightforward and expected near-death experience, attempting to overdose on painkillers before nearly drowning in the swimming pool at his old house in front of the “Hollywoo” sign. Hopefully, Perry’s own actual death had nothing to do with drugs or suicide; more than likely it was just one of those “freak things.” Nonetheless, one must admit that, among other similarities, the drowning in the hot tub parallel (at a home bought by 90s sitcom money) is particularly uncanny.

A rainy day in Manhattan didn’t stop hundreds of “Friends” fans from braving the downpour to honor Matthew Perry, who died on Saturday at age 54.
People of all ages and backgrounds gathered by the “Friends” building in New York’s West Village to pay their respects to Perry and pose for pictures outside of the show’s iconic apartment. Despite the dreary weather, dozens of flower bouquets and handmade signs with phrases like “the one where we all lost a friend” were piled on the southwest corner of Bedford and Grove near the cozy neighborhood restaurant The Little Owl. (“Friends” was filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Los Angeles, but exterior shots of Monica and Rachel’s rent-controlled apartment were filmed at 90 Bedford Street.)
“It feels strange to feel sad about it, but it really has been a sad morning,” said 29-year-old Catherine Schmitt, who brought flowers. “It’s been my comfort show since I can remember. I can’t imagine watching it now without feeling deep sadness.”
Fans build a shrine for Matthew Perry outside the apartment from “Friends.”
Though he appeared in other shows and movies like “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and “The Whole Nine Yards,” Perry was synonymous with the lovably sarcastic Chandler Bing, playing the character for a decade on “Friends.” The beloved sitcom, which remains nearly as popular today as it was in the ’90s and early aughts, catapulted Perry and his co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer onto the A-list.
Like many longtime “Friends” fans, Hope Pace felt Perry’s loss deeply. “He was all of our friends,” she said. “He was the silly friend; he was the happy friend. That’s why we say, ‘Check on your happy friends.’”
She canceled her Sunday plans to visit the recognizable Village landmark and brought a sign that read, “Thank you for everything, Mr. Bing.”
“He deserves to be honored,” she said. “I know he suffered a lot.”
Perry was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home, according to law enforcement officials, who say there were no signs of foul play or drugs on the scene. A cause of death has not been revealed. But in his 2022 memoir, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing,” Perry spoke openly about his sobriety battles, as well as his longtime struggles with alcohol and opioids.
Plenty of tears were flowing on Sunday afternoon as the crowd, many of whom were trickling in and out of the area, came together to process Perry’s death. Emabel Gund describes feeling “total shock” as she stopped by the shrine with her husband, Erol.
“I’m 58, and Matthew Perry was 54. It’s hard to lose people who are your peers. You think you’re going to grow old with them,” she said through tears. “I wish he beat the demons.”
Erol chimed in, “He had so much life left.”

Fans pay tribute to Matthew Perry outside apartment from “Friends.”
Samantha Cheung, 27, and her friend Sabrina Wong, 26, were visiting from California and already had plans to stop by the building even before news broke about Perry’s death.
“I wanted to visit because the show gave me a lot of comfort growing up,” Cheung said. Wong added, “We’ve been watching episodes since we got to New York.”
Cheung was raised watching the sitcom with her family. Now that she’s in her 20s, she finds the show, about six New Yorkers navigating work, romance and the joys and frustrations of being out on your own, more relatable than ever.
“It captures what young adulthood is like and how important your friends are during that time of your life,” she said. Perry’s portrayal of Chandler didn’t just provide comedic relief, it also taught her important life lessons like, “Don’t take life too seriously. You can make light out of bad things. it’s OK to joke around.”

Dave Gardner, 59, says he’s been thinking about the lyrics to the sitcom’s memorable theme song since learning about Perry.
“It’s a shame,” he said. “This is the show that brought us the song that said, ‘I’ll be there for you,’ and now we have to live in a world where not all the ‘friends’ are there for you.”

As fans continue to mourn his passing, many are waiting to hear the Friends cast reaction to Matthew Perry’s death. The actor—who passed away at the age of 54 on October 28, 2023—starred alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer on the beloved sitcom for a decade.
Tributes for the actor have continued to pour in on social media since news first broke of his passing. Friends co-creators Marta Kauffman and David Crane, along with series director Kevin Bright, issued a heartfelt joint statement following Perry’s unexpected death. “We are shocked and deeply, deeply saddened by our beloved friend Matthew’s passing,” the trio wrote. “It still seems impossible. All we can say is that we feel blessed to have had him as part of our lives.”
“He was a brilliant talent. It’s a cliche to say that an actor makes a role their own, but in Matthew’s case, there are no truer words. From the day we first heard him embody the role of Chandler Bing, there was no one else for us,” their tribute continued. “We will always cherish the joy, the light, the blinding intelligence he brought to every moment — not just to his work, but in life as well. He was always the funniest person in the room. More than that, he was the sweetest, with a giving and selfless heart.”
The trio ended their statement with a somber play on the series’ episode titles: “We send all of our love to his family and friends. This truly is The One Where Our Hearts Are Broken.”
News of Perry’s death broke on Saturday, October 28, 2023 after the Fools Rush In actor was found unresponsive in a hot tub at his home in California. The county’s medical examiner confirmed the actor’s death the following day, revealing that an investigation into his death was currently “open” and that an autopsy had been scheduled to determine how Matthew Perry died. According to an initial report by the Los Angeles Times, there were no signs of foul play.

While the main cast of Friends has yet to release a public statement about Perry’s death, an industry source revealed to Page Six that Perry’s former co-stars are “reeling” over the news of his passing and are preparing to release a joint tribute to their friend.
“The cast is reeling from the loss of their brother, because that’s what Matty was — their brother,” the source shared. “It’s just devastating.”
The source went on to add that they are all leaning on each other at this time. “The entire cast are close, they will be devastated, because they were together through the best of times and worst of times,” the insider said, adding, “And when Matty was sick, they protected him, they looked him after him fiercely.”
Perry starred on Friends alongside Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer. The series, which ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004, launched all six of them into the limelight. But more than fame, the group came away with relationships that went beyond their onscreen friendships. Perry, who was open about his struggles with drug and alcohol addiction throughout the years, was always supported by his costars on his journey toward sobriety.
His cast mates were “understanding, and they were patient,” he wrote in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing: A Memoir
. “It’s like penguins. Penguins, in nature, when one is sick, or when one is very injured, the other penguins surround it and prop it up. They walk around it until that penguin can walk on its own. That’s kind of what the cast did for me.”
Jennifer Aniston, who starred as Rachel Green on the series, remained especially close with Perry following the series’ end. “She was the one that reached out the most. You know, I’m really grateful to her for that,” Perry told Diana Sawyer in 2022.
In his memoir, Perry also revealed that Aniston was the first person in the cast to call him out when his alcoholism became obvious on the set of Friends. “‘I know you’re drinking,’ she said,” Perry wrote, recalling the day that Aniston confronted him in his trailer. “‘How can you tell?’ I said. I never worked drunk. ‘I’ve been trying to hide it.’” However, Aniston revealed that it was clear to the entire cast: “‘We can smell it,’ she said, in a kind of weird but loving way, and the plural ‘we’ hit me like a sledgehammer,” Perry added.
Other Friends co-stars have since paid tribute to Perry, including Maggie Wheeler, who played Janice, the on-again-off-again girlfriend to Perry’s character, Chandler Bing. “What a loss,” the actress wrote on Instagram. “The world will miss you Mathew Perry. The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared.”
Morgan Fairchild, who made guest appearances as Chandler’s mom on the series, took to X (formerly Twitter) to share her condolences. “I’m heartbroken about the untimely death of my ‘son’, Matthew Perry. The loss of such a brilliant young actor is a shock,” she wrote. “I’m sending love & condolences to his friends & family, especially his dad, John Bennett Perry, who I worked with on Flamingo Road & Falcon Crest.”

Matthew Perry’s iconic performance on “Friends” may forever link him with New York City, but the actor behind Chandler Bing described himself as half Canadian and had deep ties to some of the biggest names in Canadian politics.
The 54-year-old actor was found dead in his Los Angeles home Saturday.
Perry detailed his childhood spent growing up in Canada with his mother in his memoir, published a year before his death.
Perry lived between Ottawa, Montreal and Toronto with his Canadian mother, Suzanne Perry, who worked as press secretary for then-prime minister Pierre Trudeau and later as a national anchor for Global News.
In a 2017 interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Perry recalled beating up a young Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the schoolyard when he was in Grade 5.
Trudeau responded at the time with a social media post inviting Perry to a rematch, quipping, “who hasn’t wanted to punch Chandler?”
The prime minister responded to Perry’s death in a tweet late Saturday night, calling it shocking and saddening.

As news of the passing of Matthew Perry, an actor best known for his role as Chandler Bing on “Friends,” began circulating Saturday, many fans took to social media to remember his best moments.
Perry was found Saturday unresponsive in his home, authorities told the Los Angeles Times and TMZ. No cause of death was given, but foul play is not suspected. He was 54 years old. His publicist, agent and manager did not respond to Newsweek’s requests for comment.
One of the most popular TV shows of all time, “Friends” has continued to find new audiences with reruns and streaming. HBO, whose streaming service Max is the current online home for the show, released a cast reunion show in 2021. A pop-up event featuring parts of the show’s set is currently touring the country, allowing the show’s fans to relive their favorite moments.
Perry often found himself playing the straight man for Matt LeBlanc, who played Chandler’s roommate Joey. Their chemistry shown through the differences in the two characters.
Matthew Perry was more than Chandler Bing. He was what made Friends go. Sad to hear of his passing, but thankful for the memories he gave us. Rest in Peace pic.twitter.com/9rVI8T2zgk

Perry was perhaps best known Chandler’s epic zingers, and perhaps for having a ‘nubbin’.
His sarcasm, however, was usually a facade for insecurities and awkwardness. When stripped away, it way for some tender, honest moments.
It’s impossible to pick from 10 seasons, but I keep going back to Chandler and Monica’s proposal as Matthew Perry’s finest moment on Friends because of how deeply felt his performance is. Yes, Perry was a sarcasm god, but his sincerity and sensitivity shines brightly here. pic.twitter.com/cOHMqQ9N4T

In his book, “Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing”, Perry shared a story about getting the last line on the final episode of “Friends.”
“Before that final episode, I’d taken Marta Kauffman to one side,” Perry wrote. “‘Nobody else will care about this except me,’ I said. ‘So, may I please have the last line?’”

During the reunion show, Perry spoke about how close the cast remained well after “Friends” was over.
“After the show was over, at a party or any kind of social gathering, if one of us bumped into each other, that was it,” Perry recalled. “That was the end of the night. You just sat with the person all night long. And that was it, you apologized to people you were with, but they had to understand you had met somebody special to you and you were going to talk to that person for the rest of the night.”
Celebrities remember Perry
A number of celebrities shared their appreciate of the late “Friends” actor. Mira Sorvino remembered his wit. Piers Morgan recalled reading Perry’s memoir. George Takei simply offered condolences.
Oh no!!! Matthew Perry!! You sweet, troubled soul!! May you find peace and happiness in Heaven, making everyone laugh with your singular wit!!! 💔 💔 💔

RIP Matthew Perry, 54.
The Friends star was a great actor, but by his own admission, a very tormented guy. His recent autobiography about his addiction-ravaged life was one of the most powerful, honest and revealing I’ve ever read. Such sad news. pic.twitter.com/RxAA1V1fr6— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) October 29, 2023
Warner Bros. Television Group released a statement to CNN: “We are devastated by the passing of our dear friend Matthew Perry. Matthew was an incredibly gifted actor and an indelible part of the Warner Bros. Television Group family. The impact of his comedic genius was felt around the world, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of so many. This is a heartbreaking day, and we send our love to his family, his loved ones, and all of his devoted fans.”

“Friends” wouldn’t have been “Friends” without Matthew Perry.
And neither would have been, as time went by, American culture. The actor, who infused the hit show with its vital, sustaining dose of sarcasm, went on in recent years to publicize his sobriety, and his work bringing others out of addiction through the founding of a sober living house. His death, at 54 in an apparent drowning, comes as a shock, in part because Perry seemed to have a second act lying ahead of him.
His work on “Friends” cast a long shadow: The on-off love affair between Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Jennifer Aniston) were the engine of the show’s plot, but the character of Chandler Bing was the big comic idea. Acting amidst a murderer’s row of comedy performers, Perry was the cast tactitian, figuring out precisely where the final beat of each scene fell. Paired with Matt LeBlanc’s Joey as roommates in the show’s early going, Perry found new angles on the platonic bro-friendship, making it clear that this was, for the time being, the most important relationship in both guys’ lives. And Perry got a showcase in the 1999 episode “The One Where Everybody Finds Out” — moment for moment, among the strongest sitcom episodes of its era. Its quality is thanks in part to Perry’s commitment to a series of escalating schemes: Certain that he must prove he’s not in love with Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler forces himself through a date with Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow).
And, as we knew he would, Chandler breaks down. He goes gleefully far in pursuit of the bit — for all that their pairing seemed convenient at the time, Perry’s and Cox’s ability to play off of each other was a rare comedy godsend — but he can’t, finally, pull off the lie. There was one thing that Perry, as Chandler, couldn’t do, and that’s guile: The character’s caustic wit, as performed by a master comic actor, presented as nothing more and nothing less than observational humor about his friends: One degree harsher and it would have tanked the show, one degree softer and it wouldn’t have landed.
And yet it always did, no matter how good or bad the script, no matter what Perry was going through. His memoir, published just last year, describes his emerging from a childhood in which he abused alcohol into a TV set on which he was, often, in active crisis. “Friends” will always be alternately funny and heartwarming, to the many millions on its wavelength. The struggles that Perry went through in order to perform a character whose jockeying wit overlays clear sadness seem, now, all the more apparent.
Through it all, Perry built and sustained a long-running career, including films like “Fools Rush In” and “The Whole Nine Yards” and further TV forays like “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip” and the 2015 reboot of “The Odd Couple.” But nothing stuck like “Friends.” And perhaps nothing demanded as much, too. In his memoir, Perry wrote about performing Chandler’s marriage to Courteney Cox’s Monica, just before being taken back to treatment. It seems an act of gumption, and of helping out his friends, and something that makes one want to go back to the tape, to find the pain and try, from afar, to stamp it out. Perry has been open about the support — and, at times, the tough love — of his castmates on “Friends.” He had gotten as far as he had with the support of his castmates, but he still, years later, had a wit all his own, one that had gotten him through.

Friends star and beloved actor Matthew Perry has passed away at 54. Perry was found unresponsive in his hot tub at his Los Angeles residence. In 1994 Perry skyrocketed to fame as one of the stars of NBC’s smash hit comedy series Friends.
As the sardonic Chandler Bing, Perry carved out a niche as the sarcastic friend with a quick wit and a heart of gold. Though his role in Friends was undoubtedly iconic, Perry was a prolific actor who appeared in shows like The West Wing, Scrubs, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, The Good Wife, and Go On. Perry also starred in films like Fools Rush In, 17 Again, and The Whole Nine Yards.
Perry detailed his rise to fame and his struggles with addiction in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. RIP to a television legend whose work touched millions across the globe. We’ll have more as this story develops.
