I’m Curious—What Do French Girls Buy on Amazon?

    [ad_1]

As a fashion editor and mom living in L.A who loves nothing more than instant gratification (aka two-day shipping) I tend to shop a lot on Amazon. From books to diapers and T-shirts to tea, I rack up a lot of mileage on my Amazon odometer, and my fellow editors can attest to shopping on the multi-brand platform as much as I do.

So last week, as I sat and wrote one of our beloved French-girl stories, it got me thinking, What exactly do stylish French women buy on Amazon (if anything at all)? Curious to find out more, I tapped into a number of fashion-forward French women that we love to feature here on Who What Wear to see what exactly they add to their Amazon carts on the regular.

Perhaps, not so surprisingly it seems French girls do not shop as much or as frequently as we do in the U.S for fashion items. One of the most popular items they do shop for on Amazon is books, along with home and decor items, beauty items, and niche products such as polaroid film (something that popped up several times). Intrigued? Read on to see what some of our favorite French girls shop on Amazon.

  • 5 Basics Later, and You’re Practically French

5 Basics Later, and You’re Practically French

    [ad_1]

Whether you love or hate the fashion world’s obsession with everything Français, you have to admit that French style is somewhat fascinating. Combine that with the trend of reducing your closet, and you’ve got one compelling concept: the five-piece French wardrobe. Although the movement gained a lot of traction in 2014, we thought we’d revisit the concept, as it feels especially current in the time of capsule and uniform wardrobes—and because we thought you may find this interesting.

The guidelines are fairly simple: First, make sure you have quality basics across all categories of apparel and eliminate clothing from your wardrobe that you don’t wear, love, and love to wear. Buy new basics to fill any gaps, and remember quality over quantity. Second, limit your new purchases to five nonbasic items per season (once in spring/summer and once in fall/winter) that add a bit of personality and make your wardrobe feel current and fresh.

If you’re wondering why it’s called a French wardrobe, from what we could gather, the idea originated from a “French Style” thread on The Fashion Spot that discusses how the French wardrobe philosophy focuses on the concept of curating the direction of your wardrobe.

As for its life-changing promises, the five-piece French wardrobe is said to help you cultivate a wardrobe that feels true to your aesthetic and stand the test of passing fads and seasons. The result is less money spent on items you don’t really need, less frustrating time spent trying to figure out what to wear, and a newfound feeling of deep satisfaction with your wardrobe.

I Noticed French Women Don’t Wear Denim Shorts Anymore—They Prefer These 6 Alts

    [ad_1]

As soon as June 21 comes around, denim shorts become one of the first things I reach for when getting dressed. I know the instinct will kick in again this year, but when I searched for fresh outfit inspiration, I was surprised to see this warm-weather staple was losing favor. That’s not to say that everyone has decided against them. However, French women, who have long been a source of style inspiration, seem to be putting them on the back burner. When I went to scan their recent outfits, I couldn’t help but notice they were reaching for several alternatives to denim shorts—six items, to be exact.

Seeing as how French style is synonymous with effortless polish, it takes a lot for Parisians to set aside something as perennial as denim shorts. And yet the six fresh alternatives you’re about to see here are definitely fitting the bill. From pajama-inspired linen pants to tailored shorts, here are the items French girls are wearing on repeat this summer (and you might want to, too).

We study French-girl style in depth here at Who What Wear, and if there is one thing I’ve learned, it’s that jeans—predominantly vintage-inspired, straight-leg pairs—are practically a second skin to Parisians. While they still wear jeans extensively in the summer, the French also gravitate toward a handful of stylish staples to keep them looking effortlessly cool as the temps rise.

If you love Parisian style as much as we do, take a peek below to see the jean alternatives French people rely on throughout the summer. Plus, get inspired on how to style these staples. Of course, I also included plenty of shopping picks to help you get the look.

  • The *One* Summer Pant Trend French and Italian Women Swear By

The *One* Summer Pant Trend French and Italian Women Swear By

    [ad_1]

If you’re simultaneously obsessed with the latest micro-trends and too intimidated to test them out, you’ve come to the right place. This is Ways to Wear, a monthly series where editor Eliza Huber offers a dose of outfit inspiration centered around current trends that feel intriguing yet overwhelming at the same time. Consider it your guide to actually wearing the coolest items of the moment, no matter how puzzling they might appear at first.

If I had to pinpoint one item on my Instagram feed that I’ve spotted the most thus far this summer, I’d name white trousers without a second of hesitation. For reference, the people I follow are primarily involved in the fashion world or the industries surrounding it and mostly live in Europe—specifically France and Italy. Their outfits are, therefore, quintessentially French and Italian, and in the summer, that means they wear low-key yet dangerously chic ensembles that, nine times out of 10, involve white pants.

Despite how laissez-faire their looks appear online, they tend to be harder to re-create than you expect. It’s probably because of that whole je ne sais quoi thing that comes naturally to people born there but not so much for those who aren’t. Driven by my own frustration, I decided to put my own white-trouser selection to the test, using my skills in the styling department as well as my Instagram-induced knowledge of French and Italian fashion. The result? Seven summer outfits that are centered around the warm-weather bottoms that would fit right into either country between the months of June and August. Below, see how I did and shop the pant trend that French and Italian women swear by during the summer months.

The One Sneaker Brand French Women Always Reach For

    [ad_1]

Ever since I saw Phoebe Philo walk out at the end of Celine shows during her tenure wearing Adidas Stan Smiths shoes, I’ve had a pair in my closet—along with almost every single chic woman I know. The style, quintessentially elevated, has come to represent a chic je ne sais quoi about modern-day elevated dressing. I’ve worn mine with lady jackets and office-appropriate trousers just as easily as I’ve worn my Adidas shoes with jeans and oversized sweatshirts on a day where I’m running errands. If a French woman could be a pair of sneakers, she’d 100% be a pair of Adidas shoes.

More than just simple, white leather shoes, the entire Adidas brand has become synonymous with cool, French girl style over the last few years. Their Sambas represent the fun-loving, trend-forward girl hanging out around the Marais neighborhood. Ultraboost live on the feet of cool, on-the-go moms picking up produce and taking their immaculately-dressed babies to the Louvre. For the fashion set, the Stan Smith reigns superior (although, we have a soft-spot colorful Gazelles too).

If you’re anything like me, you want an affordable sneaker that can go with anything. Luckily, nearly all of Adidas’ best-selling, must-have styles are $150 or under. If these outfits can’t convince you French women are obsessed with Adidas shoes, I honestly don’t know what will. Below, shop all the pairs sitting in their carts.

I Spent a Month Living In Paris, Watch as My Style Evolved Week by Week

    [ad_1]

There is something about the airport weight limit that can turn even the most exuberant dresser into a minimalist.

I spontaneously booked a month-long trip to Paris with little time to plan and given my packing restraints, I ended up centering my Parisian wardrobe around a capsule wardrobe like no other. Everything that I read and saw on social media told me that French style was all about wardrobe staples, cheeky cardigans, and quiet luxury. While I came into Paris with that expectation, reality struck me and a conversation with a Parisian friend revealed the truth.

He told me over drinks in Le Marais that French fashion isn’t exactly what Americans think it is. “It’s about breaking the rules. Paris girls will never wear a full look. They’ll put two things together that you would never expect. They’ll even mix Zara with Hermes—they don’t care.” Hearing this halfway into my trip totally change the approach I had to my personal style moving forward.

Although my style started out in the elevated basics category, I watched it evolve in ways that I didn’t expect. During every phase of my journey, I thought to myself, “wow, this is the new me,” only to transform again the following week. Below, discover the evolution of my wardrobe week by week—you’re guaranteed to be impressed.

French women have earned the reputation of having somewhat of a classic sartorial aesthetic. This is something that people love about “French style“. So how does their choice of accessories fit into this classic vibe? Let’s break it down a bit.

I Found the Staple French Girls Wear Each Summer—From H&M to Loewe

    [ad_1]

With trends constantly coming in and out of the sartorial world, it can be rare to find one that stands the test of time. But there’s one trend that continues to pop up every summer with no question and has also been a French-girl favorite since the ’80s: woven bags. Whether it’s rattan, straw, raffia, or jute, the trend seems to be the ultimate summer staple that won’t be going away anytime soon.

When you think of Jane Birkin, the iconic Hermès bag will instantly come to mind, but what you might not know is that a basket bag was also one of the French actress’s top handbags of choice. It completed her relaxed “cool-girl” look, and it’s safe to say the Hermès bag isn’t the only timeless bag she’s championed. A woven bag completes any summer ensemble, whether you’re running errands or relaxing on vacation. Plus, who doesn’t want to emulate French-girl style?

While the actress used to shop for her woven bags on her travels, you can shop for your own from the comfort of your own home. I’ve scanned the market for the best picks, from affordable options at H&M to investment-worthy bags by Loewe. Keep scrolling to find your pick for the season ahead.
