New ‘Peglin’ Mobile Roundrel-Focused Update Brings In New Boss Relic, Roundrel Relics, Scenarios, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Red Nexus Games’ pachinko roguelike Peglin (Free) has hit 0.9.44 with many Roundrel-focused changes and additions in its first official update for 2024. If you’ve not kept up with the game lately, we had an update go live at the end of December already, and it looks like Red Nexus Games is continuing to bring the mobile version of the game updates soon after the PC version sees them. The focus of the update is Roundrel with many new relics for it, a new Boss relic, new scenario, new scenario relic, changes for Refreshircle and Critsoballos, and other adjustments. Details for the bug fixes and all the balance adjustments are on the Steam page here. Watch the trailer for Peglin below:

Peglin is set to hit 1.0 this year, and I’m curious to see how it evolves on mobile and PC leading into that launch. If you’re interested in checking out the game right now, read my review of Peglin on iOS here covering the state of game from a few months ago. I also interviewed Red Nexus Games here covering the game, pricing, and a lot more. You can try Peglin on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. It is a paid game on Steam, but a free to start release on mobile with a one time full game unlock purchase. We featured it as our Game of the Week when it launched. Check it out on Steam here. Head over to our forum thread for more impressions and discussion around the iOS version. Have you played Peglin before on mobile or PC?

  • ‘Monster Hunter Now’ Descent of the Azure King Event Detailed, New Special Carving Knives Packs Revealed – TouchArcade

‘Monster Hunter Now’ Descent of the Azure King Event Detailed, New Special Carving Knives Packs Revealed – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Ahead of next week’s launch, Niantic and Capcom have detailed the Monster Hunter Now (Free) Descent of the Azure King event and confirmed new in-app purchase bundles will be available to celebrate the event. This event was revealed in the official January 2024 events announcement post. Azure Rathalos will appear from January 15th at 9 AM until January 21st at midnight local time. Rathalos and Azure Rathalos will both have boosted appearance rates from January 19th to January 21st in forest habitats. There will be event quests from the 19th until the 21st letting you earn the Azure King medal in-game. To celebrate the event, two special packs will be available with Special Carving Knives and other items. There will be one in-game and exclusive to the web store.

If you’ve completed chapter 13 of the main story and unlocked Rathalos hunts, Azure Rathalos will start appearing normally. If you haven’t done that yet, Azure Rathalos will only be present during the appearance rate boost period. While we don’t know the new moveset yet, if Azure Rathalos is like in the console games, it will be weak to Dragon and Ice element. Azure Rathalos is much more mobile than the regular Rathalos and is more annoying to deal with as a melee weapon user in the main games. I’m curious to see how this plays out in Monster Hunter Now next week.

I’m still hoping Niantic rebalances Hunt-a-thons for solo play for those living in parts of the world without many Monster Hunter Now players. If you are planning to start playing the game, I put together some (newly updated) tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. You can grab Monster Hunter Now on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The in app purchases include different sets of gems and upgrades. Check out the official website here. What do you think of Monster Hunter Now if you’ve been playing it and did you try a Hunt-a-thon yet?

  • Peak of Combat’ Theme Song ‘Fire Inside’ by Casey Edwards and Victor Borba Now Streaming on Spotify and Apple Music Worldwide – TouchArcade

Peak of Combat’ Theme Song ‘Fire Inside’ by Casey Edwards and Victor Borba Now Streaming on Spotify and Apple Music Worldwide – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat (), the mobile entry in the superb Devil May Cry series from Nebula Joy and Capcom, has always looked great, but it finally feels like a modern Devil May Cry game thanks to its new theme song. The Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat theme song “Fire Inside” has been composed and producer by Casey Edwards (Devil Trigger, Bury the Light), features vocals by Victor Borba (Bury the Light), drums by Anup Sastry (Bury the Light, Exohuman), and mixed by Zakk Cervini at MDDN Studios. If you’ve not played Devil May Cry 5 or Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition, you absolutely should. Devil May Cry 5 is one of the best action games ever, and the best in the series. I’m glad that they all got back to do a song for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat. “Fire Inside” is superb. Watch the video for it below:

The song is so good, it got me to re-download Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition on PS5 for a replay, and also the base game on Steam Deck to play on the go once again. Since you’re here, you may as well also listen to Bury the Light from Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition below:

Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat releases on January 10th, 2024 for iOS and Android. If you’d like to play it with a controller, watch the Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat video showcasing controller support here. You can pre-register for Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat on the official website here and pre-order it on the App Store for iOS here. Pre-registering will get you different rewards like gems, red orbs, potions, and more as detailed on the official website. Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat’s App Store page has a list of some of the different in app purchases like seasonal cards, gift packs, and different sets of devil gems included in the game. What do you think of today’s Devil May Cry: Peak of Combat theme song and are you motivated?

Azure Rathalos, Qualily’s Special Quests Return, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Niantic and Capcom just revealed the Monster Hunter Now (Free) January 2024 events for the game on iOS and Android. In addition to Qualily’s Special Quests (Carpenterbugs, Monster Bons+, Zenny, and more) returning, this month will see Azure Rathalos descend into Monster Hunter Now as a part of the “Descent of the Azure King” quest. I’m glad Azure Rathalos will have a boosted appearance rate throughout the event in forest habitats and not only during specific times of the day. For some reason, we are getting an event focused on Banbaro and Radobaan with increased boost rates as well. I’ve not run into anyone using gear from either of them. I’m looking forward to Qualily’s quests for Monster Bone+ specifically from the 12th until the 18th of this month. The Azure Rathalos event is on from the 15th until the 21st of this month. The official website event section for this month is here.

So far, the recent updates have been good, but I’m still not sold on Hunt-a-thons. They need to balance them for solo play for those living in parts of the world without many Monster Hunter Now players. If you are planning to start playing the game, I put together some (newly updated) tips and tricks for the game, details on the weapons, special skills, the current monsters list, my wishlist for future update monsters, and more. • Poptential™ by Certell Offers Free Lessons on the Importance and History of Global Trade

Poptential™ by Certell Offers Free Lessons on the Importance and History of Global Trade

    [ad_1]

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), growing inflation and tighter monetary policy in the United States and abroad, along with unrest in Ukraine and the Middle East, have led to a broad-based trade slowdown in 2023. Poptential™, a family of free social studies course packages, explores the historical significance of global trade in its World History curriculum, equipping high school educators with media-rich content to help students gain a deeper understanding of the importance of free trade.

“High school students rely on robust global trade for many of the products they use every day, so it’s important for them to understand how free trade impacts our economy,” said Julie Smitherman, a former social studies teacher and director of content at Certell, Inc., the nonprofit behind Poptential. “Poptential’s global trade lessons help teachers engage students in discussions about how events, such as economic swings, geopolitical upheaval, and the Covid-19 pandemic, have disrupted the flow of trade, and the importance of trade in the effort to eradicate poverty and enhance the economies of countries big and small.”

Poptential course packages boost student engagement by using a variety of pop culture media to illustrate concepts, including those taken from sitcoms, movies, animations, cartoons, late-night shows, and other sources. Lessons on the history of global trade in Poptential World History Volumes 1 & 2 e-books, include:

The Silk Road: A video featured in a mini-lesson in Volume 1 provides an overview of China’s incredibly lucrative silk trading business along the Silk Road. Silk was used as currency to exchange for other valuable goods across many continents. This trade model was a precursor to today’s globalization of trade and is not to be confused with the online black market entity titled Silk Road, which was shut down by the FBI in 2013.

Mongol Empire Accelerates Trade: With the start of the Mongol Empire in 1206, trade began to flourish. Mongol control of the Silk Road made it a safer route, allowing European merchants and craftsmen to journey to China for the first time in history. The December 4 bell ringer features a video that looks at Genghis Khan’s legacy, the rise of the Mongol Empire, and its influence on trade between East and West.

Encouraging Trade Relations: Founded in October 1945, the United Nations deals with many foreign policy issues. Featured in the same bell ringer, this video outlines the establishment of the U.N. and the role it plays in encouraging good relations among its members to promote social and economic cooperation, such as trading among nations.

Exploiting Resources and Trade Routes: Areas of the world that are rich in natural resources, such as oil, precious metals, and minerals, or those that have important trade routes, have throughout history been exploited by outsiders who want to gain control of the flow of their resources. This video in Volume 2 offers a look at how Europeans took control of Africa in the late 1800s to reap the financial benefits of its many natural resources.

Poptential course packages include everything instructors need to teach a subject, including lessons, e-books, bell ringers, quizzes, and tests. The curriculum is standards-based and developed by teachers.

Poptential is available via a digital platform that allows students to access lessons even in poor bandwidth environments. Course packages in American History, World History, U.S. Government/Civics, and Economics are available free at www.poptential.org.

  • When embracing the ‘science of reading,’ we can’t leave out older students

When embracing the ‘science of reading,’ we can’t leave out older students

    [ad_1]

Each year, we share our 10 most-read stories. Not surprisingly, many of this year’s Top 10 focused on equity, edtech innovation, immersive learning, and the science of reading. This year’s 6th most-read story focuses on the science of reading for older students.

This story was originally published by Chalkbeat, a nonprofit news organization covering public education in communities across America. Sign up for our free New York newsletter to keep up with NYC’s public schools.

The day before my first day of teaching middle school in 2018, I decorated my Brooklyn public school classroom with quotes from famous people reflecting on the importance of reading. Hanging on cream-colored cardstock were the words of Malcolm X, Toni Morrison, C.S. Lewis, Barack Obama, Maya Angelou, and dozens of other writers and thinkers. I hoped to inspire my students to fall in love with reading. I didn’t think to hope that all my students could do the very thing I was asking them to love. I didn’t know that part of my job as a sixth grade Humanities teacher would be to teach students to read in the first place.

There was a round table in the very back of my classroom that a group of five sixth-graders bee-lined to on day one. On day two, I asked one, then another, to read aloud to me. My request was met with silence, guessing, a fist slammed on the table, and a student storming out of the room. When those sixth grade students finally sat down for a reading assessment, their ability to decode print text was at a first or second grade level.

As a newly minted middle school English teacher, I was shocked by the number of students who entered my classroom unable to decode text. As I got to know them, I saw that herculean efforts to mask their reading disabilities revealed intelligence, determination, and traumatic relationships to school.

Since my first year of teaching, I have dedicated a lot of time to understanding why that happened. With the toxic combination of inaccurate reading assessments and a whole-word approach that encouraged guessing rather than decoding, the Matthew Effect (rich get richer, poor get poorer) has been in full swing in middle schools all around the country. The children who lived in text-rich environments and/or with families who could afford supplemental private tutoring got to “get it.” And those who didn’t? Many never acquired the literacy skills that are tied to power and privilege in this country.

Since my first day of teaching middle school, the “science of reading” — tying reading proficiency to explicit phonics instruction in addition to comprehension work—became a catchphrase for Facebook groups, professional development, and curricula. Lucy Calkins revised her popular but widely criticized “Units of Study” curriculum to include phonics-focused lessons. “Sold a Story,” a podcast series investigating reading instruction, became one of the top podcasts of the year. I also got trained in Wilson Reading Systems, an Orton-Gillingham and multisensory approach to teaching the basic phonics instruction many of my middle school students never received.

In my experience, conversations about the science of reading are happening primarily with elementary and early childhood educators. Those conversations are preventing further literacy injustice and disenfranchisement. But how are we addressing the ways that the system has failed our secondary students when they first learned to read? How can I, a middle school ELA teacher, support the students in my class who were passed along without receiving the literacy instruction they needed?

I am worried that secondary students and secondary education as a whole are being left out of the conversation on how children learn to read. It’s wonderful that (finally!) we are getting to the root of the issue, but what about the young people for whom Tier I instruction comes too late? What about students who, from here on out, will need intensive intervention in order to get on grade level?

My former sixth graders are in high school now, preparing for college and careers, but the best preparation they can get is one that helps them, once and for all, become fluent readers. I am concerned that among the excitement of elementary curriculum overhauls, we will leave the children who’ve been wronged even further behind. I am afraid that we’ll do to them what this country has done to people who struggle with literacy since its inception: disenfranchise, hide, and erase.

During that first year of teaching middle school, when I was shocked by the students in my class that struggled to sound out single-syllable words, who guessed based on the first two letters rather than sound out, and who, upon hearing they’d do partner reading, developed looks of panic in their eyes, I found hope in literacy intervention programs targeting adolescents who lacked key skills.

I want more for these students. I want every secondary educator to be trained in not just teaching kids about reading; I want them to be trained to teach their students to read, should one or two or 10 sit down in the back of their class and not know how.

I believe in the power of restorative literacy. Every day, I work with adolescents and pre-adolescents who have slipped through the massive cracks of our education system. What I have witnessed during my five years working in vastly different types of schools is that learning, achievement, and opportunity gaps either dramatically widen or dramatically close in middle school. Passion for social justice within our education systems is insufficient; the actual work — the literacy work — that makes change possible needs to occur.

Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news site covering educational change in public schools.

Following two trailers during The Game Awards 2023, HoYoverse has more news today with the next major Genshin Impact (Free) update detailed for all platforms. Genshin Impact 4.3 “Roses and Muskets” follows the recent 4.2 update that brought in the climax of Fontaine’s main storyline, new characters (Furina, the Hydro Archon, and Charlotte, the ace reporter), two new regions with a high tower (the foggy forest and roiling lake) and more. Version 4.3 will bring in Navia and Chevreuse, reruns (Ayaka, Raiden Shogun, and Yoimiya), the Fontinalia Film Festival, new Fontainian features for the TCG, quality of life improvements, and more. In addition to this update, HoYoverse also confirmed that Genshin Concert 2023 will air on December 22nd. Check out the official website for it here. The concert will be free on channels like YouTube and more. Watch the Genshin Impact 4.3 “Roses and Muskets” announcement trailer below:

As usual pre-installation will go live a few days prior to the update’s launch on mobile and PC platforms. If you’ve not gotten it yet, you can download Genshin Impact for free on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The PC version is available on the official website here and the Epic Games Store. If you play on iOS, with iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 and later, you can use PS5 and Xbox Series X|S controllers to play Genshin Impact. We featured Genshin Impact as our Game of the Week when it released and awarded it our 2020 Game of the Year. I also featured it as one of the best iOS games to play with a controller. What do you think of Genshin Impact 4.3 so far from what’s been shown and the concert?

Vampire Survivors Version 1.8 Guide – Here’s How To Unlock Adventure Mode and What’s Included – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

The major Vampire Survivors version 1.8 update with Adventures went live earlier today on Steam and Xbox platforms, but will be out on mobile and Switch soon. This big free update brings in the Adventure Mode. Adventures are self-contained stories that remix content from the base game. This mode while free, isn’t available from the start. This Vampire Survivors Adventures guide will cover the adventures available right now, how to unlock the mode, and more. Poncle says the aim of this mode is to give you an excuse to replay Vampire Survivors when you’ve unlocked everything. I haven’t unlocked everything, but have gotten very close. Watch the Vampire Survivors Adventures trailer below:

How to unlock adventures in Vampire Survivors

To unlock adventures, you need to collect the Atlas Gate relic in Boss Rash at minute 7. To do this, pick a powerful character you’re comfortable with like Queen Sigma or Red Death, and survive until the seventh minute. Collect the relic from the middle of the arena. You can now either survive or quit the stage. This unlocks adventures or Adventure Mode in Vampire Survivors.

How to unlock Boss Rash mode in Vampire Survivors

If you’ve not unlocked Boss Rash yet, it is the third challenge stage. You can do this by unlocking hyper mode for all the normal stages, or using the cheat code: ‘peakgamedesign’ without quotes in the Forbidden Scrolls menu.

What adventures are available in Vampire Survivors

Right now, there are three adventures available: A Garlic Paradise, World of Light and Dark, and Legacy of the Moonspell. The first two are for all players, but the third one requires owning the DLC of the same name.

    Vampire Survivors Adventure Mode achievements

Right now, there are no platform-specific achievements for adventures, but you can unlock base game achievements from within adventures and adventure mode.

    Vampire Survivors Atlas Gate

Right now, there’s no achievement for the Atlas Gate, but a future patch will add some achievements including the Atlas Gate one.

When will Vampire Survivors get new adventures?

On the official FAQ page, poncle confirmed that the team is planning on new adventures alongside future free updates and paid DLCs.

If you’ve not played the game in a while, read my co-op impressions of the Steam version here and my Nintendo Switch review here. You can also read my Steam Deck review of Vampire Survivors here, Legacy of the Moonspell DLC review here, iOS review here, and Tides of the Foscari DLC review here. We featured it as our Game of the Week as well when it launched. You can get Vampire Survivors on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Check out our forum thread here for more discussion and impressions around the game. Hopefully this guide helps you get the most out of adventures in the game.
