Candles, pine cones and dried fruit make for warmth and fragrance in a winter home

When the temperatures drop and the winds pick up, we appreciate our homes for the shelter they provide. But we want more than mere comfort; we want our homes to be cozy and relaxing. With the holidays approaching, Pacific Palisades Realtors collaborated with interior design experts Jaqueline Hamilton and Nicola Rodriguez to reveal tips on how to make your home cozy this Winter.
Candles & scents:
“Candles can change the atmosphere and ambience of a room instantly” says interior designer Jaqueline Hamilton.
“Not only the glow of a beautifully lit candle can cast a lovely feeling of coziness to a room but also the scent can do that too.
“Choosing a scented candle can create a gorgeous smell in a room and can evoke a feeling of warmth and wellbeing and bring back memories of past winters.”
Designer Nicola Rodriguez adds: “Adding a fragrant reed diffuser, oil/wax burner or plug-in gives the room a cozy feeling before you’ve even opened your eyes. Fragrances such as pine, cinnamon, spiced apple, clove, mulled wine and woody aromas are a must for this season!”
Garlands & accessories:
“Using Christmas accessories such as bowls of pinecones or winter floral arrangements is a great way to make your room inviting and cozy” says designer Rodriguez.
“Whether it be faux foliage or fresh that you have gathered from the garden, this is a wonderful way to bring texture and the outside in to your living area” adds designer Hamilton.
“Having a fireplace is not necessary, as garlands can be placed on a sideboard or in the form of a wreath on a wall. Adding twinkling lights is another idea to create another lovely mood and display.”
Lighting
“A room should have at least one or two lamps depending on the size of it. During the holiday season, mood lighting is so important and can soften a room, as using the main pendant light in the room can at times be too strong” explains Jaqueline.
According to designer Rodriguez, another good way to make a home cozy is merging mood lighting to the use of candlelight. This can really help creating that snug feel and atmosphere. It also helps cutting the cost of electricity, which is a plus in our current financial crisis.
Rugs, blankets & cushions
“Rugs are such a focal point in any room” says designer Hamilton.
“Rugs are not only for wooden or hard floors, but for carpets too. The shaggier and softer the rugs are, the cozier they’ll make a home feel. They also help to keep the heat in during cold winter afternoons.” adds designer Nicola Rodriguez.
“Adding cushions, throws and blankets on your sofas as well as lined heavy curtains also add that cozy feel to a room. Not only do the blankets keep you snug and warm but by adding textures such as knit, sheepskin, chenille and velvet also combine the cozy look and feel.” she adds.
Paint colors:
According to designer Hamilton, pastel colors can look cold and harsher in the winter months and one way of warming up a room can be using a warm dramatic paint color. She recommends colors that are taken from nature in the autumn months, such as rich reds, terracotta and warm mustards, which can all bring a depth and coziness to a room.
Designer Rodriguez adds “If you have areas in your room that look bare, invest in a statement chair or sofa and create a cozy corner by adding a soft lamp on a small side table. This will help maximize your home space and create a welcoming atmosphere.”
A spokesperson for Pacific Palisades Realtors comments:
“With the holiday seasons around the corner, people tend to spend most of their time indoors enjoying the warmth and comfort of their homes.
Therefore, we want to create an environment where we can relax and feel cozy, away from the harsh weather.
Whether it is an old family home or a newly purchased one, decorating your home for the holidays can be a joyful individual or group activity to set the mood for the winter months ahead.”
I’m not going to call anyone out, but I will say there are a handful of people in my inner circle who make holiday shopping stressful—not because they’re difficult people but because they have irritatingly great taste. In years past, I’ve had more gifting-related breakdowns in shopping malls than I care to admit, all in a quest to find the perfect presents for the people who matter most to me.
I pride myself on my gift-giving abilities, so the stressful process is always worth the joy that comes on the other end. But this year, I’ve decided to put my sanity first and change up my shopping approach. What’s my strategy? I’ll be focusing on the one thing all my people have in common: really good style. The only thing missing from their near-perfect ensembles is a fragrance to pull it all together. The good news is Sephora‘s expertly curated selection of scents makes it surprisingly easy to find exactly what you’re looking for in a pinch—even for the most challenging people on your list. Keep scrolling for nine standout fragrances that would make exceptionally good presents for anyone with impeccable taste. (Even the bottles are just as chic as they smell.)
I don’t know about you, but I’ll use almost any beauty product that makes me feel like I’m on a constant vacation. In my humble opinion, spritzing on a balmy, aromatic fragrance is one of the easiest ways to do so. Your sense of smell can invoke so many memories, or it can help you tap into your inner dreamer to imagine you’re somewhere else completely. There’s one note in particular that instantly makes me think I’m lounging on a hammock in a tropical location.
Sweet, creamy, and musky, notes of coconut in any perfume always make my nose perk up. I know it’s not everyone’s cup of tea because, if done incorrectly, it can smell too much like scented sunscreen. But when combined with the right notes, it’s a perfume wearer’s ultimate paradise. Even if you don’t like coconut-heavy scents, there’s still one on this list I’m sure you will love. I’ve rounded up the best coconut perfumes, from strongly scented to subtle AF. Keep scrolling and find the one for you.
As beauty editors, one might say we always have our finger on the pulse when it comes to what the absolute best perfumes on the market are. More specifically, we also tend to know which designer perfumes are worthy of a spot on your vanity. You name it, we’ve probably tried it. Although every designer label has its own unique set of fragrances, there are always those that manage to remain a cult-loved item even years after its release.
Dolce & Gabbana’s Light Blue ($62) is one of them. The classic, timeless scent has remained a best seller for the brand (and beauty-editor favorite) since its release in 2001. Although I love the fresh, fruity, and woody scent myself, I think there are a few other Dolce & Gabbana perfumes out there that absolutely shouldn’t be slept on. Keep reading below—I’m breaking down all my favorites in no particular order because who can manage the impossible task of ranking them all?
A goal that’s high on my priority list is to smell completely captivating wherever I go. Whether that’s on a gorgeous vacation or just a regular day working at the office, it’s something I actively work toward by building my dream fragrance collection. To give you a little progress report, it’s coming along nicely and I’ve discovered so many gems worth sharing. The ultimate test any perfume can face is seeing how many compliments you receive while wearing it.
I can tell you one thing: The perfumes on this list pass their exams with flying colors. In my humble opinion, each of them acts as a powerful magnet and invites some serious admiration from the folks around you. If you’re fully ready to board the “You smell so good” train, keep scrolling for a few ultra-attractive perfumes that fit the bill.
Lucky for us, you don’t have to book a trip across the pond to get your hands on a bottle. The 1.6-ounce size is available on Amazon for a very doable $26, which officially makes it the most affordable scent in our arsenal of French fragrance staples. What, exactly does the oil smell like, and why is it so special? Well, it has multitasking powers, for one. As a dry oil, it’s supremely hydrating, but it’s light enough to be used anywhere on the body—try it on your strands to make your next slicked-back style a snap.
Even though it soaks into the skin and leaves behind a noticeable satiny glow, it’s the opposite of greasy, and you’re also left with that now-famous scent featuring delicate notes of orange blossom, magnolia, and vanilla. Last but not least, there’s the 98% natural origin of the oil’s trademark ingredients. Seven precious botanical oils (tsubaki, argan, macadamia, borage, camelia, hazelnut, and sweet almond) team up to deliver an impressive host of benefits, such as anti-pollution protection, antioxidant-induced brightness, diminished stretch marks, and long-lasting moisture. Obviously, we’re buying about 10 bottles.
