With more Americans now dying of drug overdose than traffic accidents, the Church of Scientology Seattle and the Foundation for a Drug-Free World join forces to combat the deadly opioid epidemic.

The Church of Scientology Seattle is sponsoring local events this summer to highlight the dangers of opioid abuse and solutions to this deadly epidemic.

At an open forum at the Church, organized by the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Terrie Johnston, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Seattle Police Department, briefed community leaders on the link between drug use and crime.

I could hold this Church up as a model for what we want every neighborhood to do.

Terrie Johnston, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Seattle Police Department

As in many parts of the country, Ms. Johnston said, opioid use has been escalating in Seattle. The Washington State Department of Health reports 995 opioid-related overdose deaths from 2012 to 2016 in Seattle and the rest of King County. In that same time period, more than 1,700 died in counties across the state. And nationwide, overdoses have surpassed traffic accidents as the No. 1 cause of accidental deaths.

Ms. Johnston indicated that the cost to the community is no less dramatic: As much as 75 percent of crimes committed in Seattle involve drugs—directly or indirectly. She also noted an increase in accident rates with a higher proportion of DUIs attributed to marijuana use.

Ms. Johnston acknowledged the Drug-Free World volunteers for reaching out in the community with the truth about drugs. “You never know the ripple effects of what you do,” she said. “It’s been a great partnership. I could hold this Church up as a model for what we want every neighborhood to do.”

The Church of Scientology and its members support the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, whose Truth About Drugs campaign is one of the world’s largest nongovernmental drug education and prevention initiatives. Thanks to this support, the Foundation provides—free of charge—drug education booklets, videos and educator guides to teachers, mentors and civic and community leaders.

According to the United Nations Office on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, “Every dollar spent on prevention can save governments up to ten dollars in later costs.”

Residents in Seattle’s Queen Anne neighborhood enjoyed the annual National Night Out block party at the Church of Scientology.

The Church of Scientology Seattle and the Seattle chapter of The Way to Happiness Foundation celebrated this year’s National Night Out Against Crime with a block party featuring live entertainment and barbecue.

Seattle has had a long history of supporting National Night Out, an annual campaign that promotes police-community partnerships, bringing neighbors together in the name of safer and better places to live. It is designed to heighten crime prevention awareness, increase neighborhood support in anti-crime efforts, and unite communities.

“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents. It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”

Ann Pearce, Public Affairs Director of the Church of Scientology Seattle

In keeping with the purpose of the evening and to help spread the message of the rewards of living an honest life, volunteers handed out copies of The Way to Happiness, a nonreligious moral code written by author and humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard and based entirely upon common sense.

The theme of the evening was a precept from this booklet that undercuts crime: “Try to treat others as you would want them to treat you.”

The Church sponsors The Way to Happiness campaign to uplift neighborhoods in the Seattle community. The booklet provides a guideline to living a life based on self-respect and personal integrity—traditional values that go a long way to reducing crime.

The block party featured a live band, a unique 1924 Model T Ford truck where the barbecue was staged, a balloon artist and visits from city personnel and the Seattle Police Department.

And the highlight of the evening, at least for the under 12 crowd, was the arrival of a fire engine from Seattle’s Fire Department Station 8. Youngsters received badges from the firefighters and it wasn’t only the kids who clambered up onto the seats of the bright red fire truck.

To complement the message of The Way to Happiness, volunteers from another humanitarian campaign supported by the Church of Scientology were also on hand—the Seattle chapter of the Foundation for a Drug-Free World.

Drugs and crime are inextricably interrelated in today’s society. And the Drug-Free World materials present the unvarnished facts about commonly abused drugs in a youth-friendly format to help young people make the self-determined decision not to abuse drugs.

“As block watch captains for our area, we were happy to have the opportunity to throw a party for the neighborhood and meet some of the local residents,” said Ann Pearce, public affairs director of the Church. “It was great to have those conversations about making the community safer for everyone.”

The Church of Scientology and its members proudly share the tools for happier living contained inThe Way to Happiness. Over 4 million copies have been distributed in the last year alone.

London City Councillors Stand Up to Drug Abuse

Launching a drug-free summer in style.

    Press Release

    Jun 29, 2016

London city councillors are setting an example for their constituents this summer by taking a stand against drug abuse. Working with the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, they launched a local drug prevention initiative. And they launched it with flair.

UK’s top jive and swing band—Britain’s Got Talent semifinalists the Jive Aces—set the mood with their hot jive music. But while it was a fun-filled, lively afternoon, the band, the councillors and the Church of Scientology of London volunteers who organized the rally had a serious purpose in mind.

A 2014 national drug survey found more than 15 million Britons, nearly one in three of the adult population, have taken illegal drugs, and 13 percent of drug users believe they have had a drug problem, the equivalent of approximately 2 million people. And, as these city councillors know all too well, with drugs come crime and degradation, assault, theft, prostitution and even death—in fact, 3,346 drug-related deaths in England and Wales in 2014.

One of the councillors invited the volunteers to join her in handing out copies of The Truth About Drug booklets in one of her rough neighborhoods and for their help in surveying residents on what they want to do to improve the community.

Future events were planned for this summer to bring the campaign to neighborhoods throughout London.

Scientologists on six continents work in their communities throughout the year to empower others with the truth about drugs. The Church and its members are dedicated to eradicating Drug abuse through education.
