Fort Worth Paschal had a touchdown called back with one second remaining, and Fort Worth O.D. Wyatt held on for a 37-31 victory in a back-and-forth nail-biter Thursday at Farrington Field.

Wyatt (6-2, 5-1 District 4-5A Division I) remains in the hunt for the district championship, while Paschal (5-3, 3-3) is on the outside looking in for a playoff spot with two games remaining.

Last season, Paschal edged Wyatt 30-28 to end a 28-year playoff drought.

“It was big, because this game last year came down to a blocked field goal at the end. This year again it comes down to the last play,” Wyatt head coach Antwaun Criss said. “This just shows how competitive football is for Fort Worth ISD, and we’re bringing it back.”

Not only was playoff positioning at stake, but the game was also Paschal’s homecoming.

The Chaparrals started off strong with a touchdown just 17 seconds into the first quarter from wide receiver Everett Scott.

But the Panthers quickly fired back with a touchdown from running back Truman Shelton, putting the score at 7-7 with 9:29 remaining in the first quarter.

Looking to move the chains on third down, the Chaparrals were stopped by the Panthers’ defense. On fourth down, Wyatt’s Joshua Acevedo kicked a field goal with 4:56 left in the first quarter, giving his team a 10-7 lead.

An interception from the Chaparrals gave them possession again, and they scored another touchdown to take a 16-7 lead early in the second quarter.

Yet again, the Panthers answered back, as Paschal wide receiver Jack English ran for a 59-yard touchdown to cut the Chaparrals’ lead to 16-14.

On a QB keeper, Kentrell Steward ran for a 42-yard touchdown to put the Chaparrals up 23-14.

The Panthers kicked a 35-yard field goal with 2:40 left in the second quarter, and Wyatt led 23-17 at halftime.

The Chaparrals started with the ball in the second half and maintained possession for almost half of the third quarter. Running back Allen Bayne scored a touchdown to put Wyatt up 30-17 with 6:26 left in the quarter.

Shelton responded with an 11-yard touchdown for Paschal, which trailed 30-24 going to the fourth quarter.

Scott then responded with a touchdown with 6:55 remaining in the game to put the Chaparrals up 37-24.

With 3:34 remaining in the game, Paschal quarterback Jashaun Thomas scored a touchdown to cut the lead to 37-31, but the Panthers couldn’t get the winning score.

“In the end, we have been calling great defense this year. We have been laying our hat on defense, and they were the last ones on the field,” Criss said. “We have a senior-led defense, and they had an opportunity to buckle down and they did that tonight.”

The Chaparrals will play Fort Worth North Side on Oct. 31 at Clark Stadium, and the Panthers will face off against Fort Worth Trimble Tech on Oct. 31 at Farrington Field.
