A man experiencing homelessness and suffering from hypothermia was carried to safety by Fort Worth firefighters on Sunday during freezing temperatures, officials said.
Fort Worth Fire Department’s Home Outreach Prevention Education (HOPE) team had responded to a large encampment located off East 9th Street on the east side of downtown Fort Worth.
The team visited the encampment Saturday to offer transportation to a shelter and returned Sunday to check on those who made the choice to spend the night outside, officials said.
All of the people inside the encampment asked the team to take them to a warming shelter, officials said.
Four individuals were not wearing shoes, as their footwear had become soaked and frozen overnight, so the team of firefighters physically carried the individuals from the encampment located “down the roadway, under a bridge and down a steep embankment” to ensure their safety, fire officials said.
One man who was outside overnight in the bone-chilling cold was “visibly exhausted” and “emotionally distressed,” according to the post.
A firefighter carried him on his back and began moving up the hill toward the transport bus. “Approximately halfway up the hill, the man began actively seizing, consistent with complications from hypothermia,” the post read.
The man was taken to a transport bus, where crews began warming efforts and requested an ambulance.
He briefly stabilized before suffering four more seizures. Fort Worth firefighters and paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital for advanced care, according to the post.
The HOPE team transported the remaining individuals from the encampment to a warming shelter, officials said.
The team distributed more than 300 blankets, gloves and hand warmers during the winter storm. They helped transport about 150 people to local shelters and assisted almost 60 others who declined shelter with reconnecting to family or friends for housing, according to the post.
“Every resident of this city is a priority and the Fort Worth Fire Department wants to ensure you that we are doing everything we can during this winter weather storm to help whomever we can,” the post read. “This is what we do in the City of Fort Worth: we help one another no matter what.”
