A high school senior was run over and killed while walking to her bus stop, Florida police say.
The 18-year-old victim was pronounced dead at the scene Monday, Oct. 27, after being struck by a car, according to the Ocala Police Department.
She was identified by Marion County Public Schools as Shannon Rushing, a senior at Forest High School.
Police said a 60-year-old woman was driving the car involved in the crash, according to WCJB. An investigation is ongoing.
The road did not have a sidewalk, and the driver told police Rushing was walking in the roadway, WESH reported.
Rushing was described in a GoFundMe as “a beautiful spirit” who “was definitely a bright light in this world.”
“Whether it was through her laughter, her kindness, or simply her presence, she touched countless hearts,” family said in the GoFundMe. “Her warmth radiated in every room, and her compassion left a lasting impression on everyone she ever met.”
A spokesperson for the school said Rushing was “very personable, bubbly and well-liked,” the Ocala Gazette reported.
“She recently joined the Jesus Club on campus and was always encouraging others with her positive outlook,” Kevin Christian, director of public relations for the school district, told the Gazette.
Ocala is about an 80-mile drive northwest from Orlando.
