  • BOSSIP’s Black History Hidden Gems: Piano Prodigy Turned TV Trailblazer Hazel Scott Was Blacklisted For Battling Racism

    [ad_1]

Welcome back to the next chapter of BOSSIP’s Black History Hidden Gems, our weekly Black History Month series dedicated to uncovering overlooked Black figures, moments, and milestones. This series spotlights stories that history nearly erased, but legacy refused to forget.

Recognizing Black achievement during Black History Month is not only about honoring triumph, but about reclaiming narratives of resilience, intellect, and humanity that were, in some cases, deliberately buried. Visionary virtuoso Hazel Scott’s talent blazed trails across Broadway, film, and her own landmark TV show before Oprah was even born. Yet her name isn’t remembered with peers like Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne. Scott’s epic career was cut short for confronting Hollywood and the U.S. government about segregated crowds, racist portrayals of Black people, and political persecution a decade before the Civil Rights Movement.

A Piano Prodigy Becomes A Star

Born in Trinidad on June 11, 1920, to West African scholar R. Thomas Scott and classically trained pianist Alma Long Scott, it seems that Hazel Scott’s meteoric rise to the top of entertainment and liberation movements was destiny. By the age of three, she became a local legend for playing piano by ear.

According to PBS’s American Masters, Scotts moved to Harlem, New York, in 1924 at the height of the Harlem Renaissance. Scott’s mother took her to audition at Juilliard at eight, half the prestigious school’s minimum age. She improvised Rachmaninoff to compensate for hands too small to reach all of the keys, convincing Walter Damrosch to grant her a special admission and scholarship. At 13, Scott followed her mother’s musical footsteps to play in Alma Long Scott’s All-Girl Jazz Band.

By 16, Scott hosted her own radio show on WOR, where she flexed complex classical piano performances. She shared the stage with the Count Basie Orchestra and made her 1938 Broadway debut in “Sing Out the News.” During her gig at Manhattan’s Yacht Club, the 18-year-old perfects a signature style to “Swing the Classics” with jazz’s speed and syncopation.

Hazel Scott Finds Her Big Break And Musical Home At The Café Society

At the innovative Café Society, the first desegregated nightclub in the U.S., Billie Holiday gave Scott her big break to replace the “Strange Fruit” singer as headliner. Her star continued rise at one of the hottest and most progressive venues in the country. Scott’s first album, “Swinging the Classics,” became a critically acclaimed and record-breaking success in 1940.

This fame and fortune became leverage to fight for equality as she continued to climb. With fans like Paul Robeson, Sinatra, Frank Sinatra, Duke Ellington, and Eleanor Roosevelt, Scott had the power to demand in her contracts that she never perform for segregated crowds. Scott famously cancelled an Austin, Texas show when she saw the venue wasn’t integrated. “Why would anyone come to hear me, a Negro, and refuse to sit beside someone just like me?” she asked Time magazine.

    Breaking Down Barriers In Hollywood

Scott didn’t change when Hollywood came calling. Despite being a newcomer, Scott turned down four film roles as a singing maid. While the industry reduced Black actors to servants, villains, and prostitutes, the triple threat’s contract stipulated she would only play herself. While Hattie McDaniel couldn’t find reprieve from segregation long enough to collect her historic Academy Award, Scott demanded final approval of her song selection and supplied her own elegant wardrobe.

Scott became the first Afro-Caribbean woman in major Hollywood roles like I Dood It (1943), Broadway Rhythm (1944), and Rhapsody In Blue (1945). Big screen success didn’t last long after filming The Heat’s On (1943). Scott and Lena Horne were the only Black stars on an all-white cast, where rampant racism compelled the outspoken advocate to take a stand.

Scott halted production for three days over a performance where Black women dressed in dirty aprons sent their men off to war. She called it unrealistic and demanded a wardrobe true to the pride of her people. She won the battle, but a studio executive vowed that the prolific pianist would never book another film again.

Hazel Scott Makes History With Her Own TV Show & Makes An Enemy Of The U.S. Government

After marrying progressive pastor-turned-New York Councilman Adam Clayton Powell Jr. in 1945, Scott stopped performing at nightclubs and Café Society. The power couple welcomed a son, Adam Clayton Powell III. She went on a 35-week national tour, still demanding forfeiture for any bookings at segregated clubs, including the Jim Crow South. According to PBS, Martin Luther King Jr. later told Scott her performance was “the first time I sat in a non-segregated audience in the south was at one of your concerts.”

In 1950, Scott became the first Black broadcast TV host with the “Hazel Scott Show” on the Dumont Television network. No recordings of her show survived, but it was so popular that it expanded to a national airing three times a week.

That same year, McCarthyism forced Scott to choose between fighting for freedom and newfound success when the “Red Channels” listed her as a Communist. She was one of the few entertainers to insist on testifying before the House Un-American Committee (HUAC) to clear her name.

She denied what she believed were misconceptions based on her association with the Café Society. However, the most damning “Un-American” thing Scott did was defy racism at every turn, including a landmark 1949 lawsuit for discrimination when a Pasco, Washington restaurant refused to serve her. Scott denounced the list of suspected sympathizers, HUAC, and any platform that conceded by participating in the blacklisting.

“The actors, musicians, artists, composers, and all of the men and women of the arts are eager and anxious to help, to serve. Our country needs us more today than ever before. We should not be written off by the vicious slanders of little and petty men,” she bravely said in a 14-page statement.

Once Blacklisting Ends Hazel Scott’s U.S. Career, She Starts Over In Paris

One week later, the network canceled her hit show as sponsors pulled out. Scott left for Europe as blacklisting ruined her U.S career, befriending Black ex-pats like James Baldwin, Josephine Baker, and Dizzy Gillespie. As Scott’s marriage declined, her career revived with a European concert tour. In 1955, she recorded one of the most important jazz albums of the 20th century, Relaxed Piano Moods, with Max Roach and Charlie Mingus.

In 1963, she and James Baldwin organized a demonstration of African Americans at the U.S. embassy in Paris to support the March on Washington. Scott soon returned to the States, only to find Motown and Rock replaced Jazz and Blues.

Scott focused on her son’s growing family and continued to play clubs and concerts. She rapidly recorded three albums in 1979: “Always,” “After Thoughts,” and “After Hours.”

In 1981, Hazel Scott died of pancreatic cancer. In addition to a loving family, she left behind an incomparable legacy of genius, innovation, advocacy, and bravery in the face of overwhelming oppression and injustice. Tragically, too few remember Scott’s name and contributions. Alicia Keys put her back in the spotlight at the 61st Grammy Awards with an homage to playing two pianos at once, like Scott famously did with mesmerizing elegance and ease.

  • Brandy Reveals She Nearly Fainted Mid-Performance, Shutting Down Her Concert With Monica Early

    [ad_1]

Brandy is speaking out about the medical emergency that caused her to rush off the stage mid-song and abruptly end her concert with Monica on The Boy Is Mine Tour.

    Source: Prince Williams / Getty

On Saturday, Oct. 18, Monica and Brandy took the stage in Chicago for the third stop on the road together. As BOSSIP previously reported, in the middle of performing “Baby,” Brandy rushed off the stage with no explanation and never returned. After a day of speculation, confusion about the incomplete show, and prayers for the disappeared diva, Brandy broke her silence.

The “Almost Doesn’t Count” star took to Instagram on Sunday to reveal what happened in the incident that nearly caused her to collapse onstage. She posted a statement to her fans on Stories and thanked them for “he overwhelming love, support, and — most importantly — your prayers.”

“I sincerely apologize for the abrupt end to last night’s performance in Chicago. After weeks of nonstop rehearsals, last night I experienced dehydration and feelings of wanting to faint. Everyone involved agreed that prioritizing my well-being was of the utmost importance,” she shared about trying to push through for the fans.

“I still made the decision to try and return and give it my all despite not feeling okay. With having to make some adjustments and the show being very technical, unfortunately, it was impossible to fully connect sonically with the production. I really appreciate everyone’s best efforts,” she continued.

About 30 minutes later, Monica abruptly closed out the concert alone. The “U Should’ve Known Better” beauty made an emotional speech about the honor of sharing the stage with Brandy. She completed a set of her solo hits, but the goodbye left fans wondering and wanting the Grammy-winning duet that inspired the name of the tour.

Brandy’s statement thanked her sister in song for holding down the show, which was 27 years in the making, while she sought medical treatment.

“I’m deeply grateful to my sister, Monica, for stepping up with such grace and professionalism, and to the entire crew for their continued care and support. I went from the arena to see a doctor nearby and have taken the proper precautions to help moving forward.

“Your understanding, patience, and unwavering belief mean the world to me. I look forward to returning to the stage — stronger and more grateful than ever — alongside my girl, Monica, tonight in Indianapolis,” the Cinderella stunner concluded.

Brandy’s explanation comes as a huge relief to supporters who knew the dedicated takes pride in showing up and showing out as a polished professional. It would take something serious before the “vocal Bible” missed a beat or a note. It sounds like our fave was working a little too hard. Fortunately, she will return to the stage for the next show in Indianapolis.

  • Feud Finally Finished? Cardi Claims Nicki Minaj Beef Is ‘Past Words’ Before Saying She’s Moving On–‘YOU NEED TO GET HELP!’

    [ad_1]

Cardi B and Nicki Minaj are still going at it on X, but at least one of them is ready to move on.

    Source: Prince Williams / WWD

Another exchange between the New York rappers saw both sides throwing personal jabs at each other and their respective children, which led to threats to escalate things to a physical confrontation. Nicki repeatedly referred to Cardi’s kids as “monkeys” and repeatedly spoke directly to the “Outside” rapper’s eldest daughter, 8-year-old Kulture.

“Dear Kulture VULTURE, Your mom is pregnant with another monkey to add to her litter,” Minaj wrote on Wednesday, Oct. 1. “The gag is that she was jealous of a little baby boy simply because his hair was longer than all 4 of you bald monkeys put together.”

“SHRUMP SAYS face ahh,” she continued in a separate tweet. “Ima kick your gums back into formation.”

Nicki’s repeated mention of Cardi’s kids clearly struck a chord, leading to some seriously lengthy responses in tweet form.

“Here you go starting again nice and early you sick pathetic loser ass demonic insane b***h,” Cardi began on Wednesday. “I said it back in 2018 and nobody believed me that you been talkin about my child since I was pregnant.. you BEEN jealous of my child.. I had never mentioned or talked about your f**kin kid!!! its one thing to be jealous of me but to be jealous of my kids is insane.. you’re jealous of my kids because they beautiful and f**kin smart and that’s why god punished you with having a slow ass kid.. you hate your child because you wish you could brag on him and his milestones but the only thing you can brag on is hair you f**kin dummy.”

That’s when Belcalis began physical threats, asking about Nicki’s location and insisting she would go to jail over her comments about Kulture.

“You said you gonna kick my child gums back??? Didn’t you say you was in NY???” she asked. “This past words now.. WHERE TF YOU AT??? Cuz today gonna be the day I go to jail.”

In what Cardi claims is her “last time” responding to Nicki, she urges the rapper to go to therapy and claims she must have a lot of trauma from her childhood. She went on to say that the rest of their issues will be handled in person, as she’s not willing to lose her career over “going back and forth wit words wit a possessed drug addict.”

“Dear Onika Tanya Maraj, This my last time responding to you because this past Twitter now.. I gotta see you… but first ima tell you truth,” Cardi began. “You said out your own mouth that the lil girl in you haven’t forgave your mother yet and that’s because your mom used to stay silent when your dad used to touch on you everytime he did that crack pipe… I know you experienced a lot of trauma and abuse but drugs is not gonna help you.. you need to go to therapy NOW… ima let you know this today.. your husband is not stoppin you from your actions because he lets you do drugs all day to numb you so he can max out your credit card… yea you think I don’t know??”

    She continued,

“YOU NEED TO GET HELP!! You need to heal that trauma.. you always coming at people everytime you see them happy because you got so much trauma and pain that you wanna put on others.. your fans are gonna gas you up while you literally lose your god damn mind…. You don’t have no friends.. no family.. just that man in your house that let you do drugs til you pass out so he can spend your money and buy the hood chains.. I’m not throwing away my career and my endorsements going back and forth with wit words wit a possessed drug addict.. ILL SEE YOU WHEN I SEE YOU.”

As previously reported, the two first reignited their beef on Monday when Nicki took aim at Cardi and her new album, Am I The Drama?, seemingly mocking it, first by simply writing “$4.99,” seemingly referencing the promotional iTunes price of Cardi’s project.

    She also threw shots at Cardi’s pregnancy while parodying the lyrics of Cardi’s new song, “Magnet,” tweeting;

“Abcdefgeeeee / Fallin off the charts wit a big bellyyyy / RUNNING TRAINS,” Minaj wrote. “Barefoot, still smellyyyyy / Still. You. Could. Not. outsell. meeeeee.”

Nicki went on to continue her previous narrative about Roc Nation and Jay-Z being involved in illegal activities, connecting those dots to Cardi’s album sales.

“Abcdefgeeeee SUR GER REE TO LOOK LIKE ME, ” she began. “Tell the rat & tell j ZEEEE RICO FRAUD & PERJURY.”

On Tuesday, while things seemed to slow down between the two, Nicki responded to Cardi’s accusations that she had to see fertility doctors in order to have a child because of the “percs [Percocets] scrambling” her eggs.

An incensed Nicki Minaj then clapped back, alleging that she would be taking legal action against Cardi for he fertility tweet. She also mentioned her foe, Roc Nation’s Desiree Perez, in her tweet that included the Pinkprint rapper calling Cardi “Barney B.”

“Is I’m da Barney B AND the FLOP?” wrote Nicki. “Is I’m lying about fertility when the Queen has never once seen or spoken to a fertility doctor In her life?”Is I’m the one sleeping with trade while hubby f***n sweetie & taking my big gewy hole for alimony? Is I’m going to be sued when the Queen show her medical records to the courts?

Oh ROC BOTTOM NATION WE WIN AGAIN. Desiree I have your medical records too. :). the lawyers said we gon have Barney b homeless within 36 months. Praise God. lucky we eating cake right now,” Minaj wrote. In a follow-up, she continued:

“Barney B, I know you don’t know this, but SOME women PLAN their pregnancies you dirty HEINEKEN p***y twat. We don’t let niggaz fuk us while we pregnant for the next trade who got 4 other ppl pregnant. You see? The devil has come to collect. You sold your soul. You made a pact. But you lost. Now hear this: you have been neutralized in the mighty name of Jesus. Every word you speak on Me or mine will now curse your enablers more than your dizzy brain could ever fathom.”

  • 10-Year-Old New Orleans Boy Escapes Armed Kidnappers Who Forced Him To Strip Inside Abandoned House

    [ad_1]

A terrifying kidnapping in New Orleans’ Algiers neighborhood ended with a 10-year-old boy bravely kicking his way to freedom after being abducted at gunpoint.

    Source: Cultura Creative / Getty

According to WVUE Fox 8 Live, police say they are still searching for the two masked men behind the Thursday afternoon attack that has shaken the community and left a family traumatized.

Abducted At Gunpoint While Walking Home

Fox 8 states that the boy’s mother said her 10-year-old son and his 6-year-old brother were walking home from the school bus stop on Kraft Place when two men dressed in all black and wearing ski masks approached with a gun. The suspects allegedly pushed the younger child to the ground and grabbed the older boy.

“My 10-year-old said they were holding hands, but you know when you’re running, eventually your hands let go,” the mother told the station.

She recalled the terrifying moment her younger son burst into the house screaming, “‘They took my brother.’”

    Can you imagine?

    Forced Into An Abandoned House

In Fox 8, the 10-year-old recounted that the men brought him to an abandoned home on Farragut Street, just a block away. Inside, he said, they ordered him and another boy he didn’t know to strip down to their underwear.

“They were going to try to take a photo of me, like I don’t know,” said the boy when asked details about what happened. “But when they tried to do that, that was when one of them left. The other one said, ‘I’ll be right back.’”

That’s when the two children took the opportunity to save their lives.

    A Daring Escape

With the captors momentarily separated, the two boys seized their chance. According to the 10-year-old, the kidnappers had locked the door, but he refused to stay trapped.

“They locked the door, so they made sure the door was locked, and that was when we tried to kick the door, and I kicked the door, and that’s when I had kicked the door down, and I had ran,” he said.

The boy sprinted toward home, which wasn’t far from where the kidnappers had hidden the boys away. He kept running until eventually he spots his father who was already out searching.

The family later discovered the child’s book bag and school clothes discarded across the street from their home, showcasing how close the crime scene was to their doorstep. Reported by Fox 8, a manager of the property confirmed to officials that the building is unoccupied, which investigators believe made it an easy hideout for the attackers.

    Mother Credits Her Son’s Strength

The boy’s mother said she is grateful for his quick thinking and courage in the face of danger.

“I just thank God for the strength I have for raising my child to be the strong person he was in that moment,” she told Fox 8.

    Investigation Ongoing

The New Orleans Police Department confirmed to Fox 8 that no suspects have been identified and that, as of Friday morning, no other victims are being investigated.

Authorities are asking anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at (504) 822-1111.

  • Keke Palmer Brings the Heat On A Spicy Bonus Episode of Hot Ones–Featuring A Surprise Sean Evans Smooch!

    [ad_1]

Keke Palmer is back on Hot Ones for a special bonus episode!

Source: First We Feast / Hot Ones

The award-winning actress, singer, and producer made her fiery return to Hot Ones in a sizzling bonus episode that dropped just in time for the launch of the limited-edition Popeyes x Hot Ones menu. This special episode sees Keke go toe-to-toe with the infamous Hot Ones wing gauntlet for a second time, but for this round, there’s a delicious twist: taste-testing the collab menu that’s burning up the fast food world.

Still, this episode is more than just spicy grub, It’s classic Keke with a candid, hilarious conversation (and some serious flirtation with host Sean Evans, who previously admitted to having a crush on Palmer).

As she makes her way through sauced-up Popeyes favorites, Palmer dives into everything from perfectionism to podcasting pet peeves, ending in a now-viral smooch with Sean.

“You gotta lock lips with Sean when you’ve been through the gauntlet,” she joked. “That’s trauma bonding!”

Keke went on to reflect on the visual art for her upcoming album Just Keke, revealing how growing up in the spotlight shaped her self-image.

“I’ve always been seen as a product,” she says, “especially as a kid when you’re trying to know who you are… So I think it’s really a metaphor. At the end of the day… I’m just a girl, I’m just a mom, I’m just Keke, I’m just somebody who’s trying to figure it out.”

As the host of her own hit podcast, Keke isn’t shy about what grinds her gears: “When people aren’t happy to be there… you could’ve said no! “Keke Palmer’s got great snacks! You come on the show, you leave with a bag.”

In one of the episode’s most heartwarming moments, Keke opens up about receiving a compliment from none other than comedy legend Eddie Murphy.

“I was out of my mind,” she gushes. “The Eddie Murphy said I reminded him of him… I think about it every morning. Eddie Murphy is iconic. I love ya, Eddie.”

When asked what reality competition show she could dominate, Keke didn’t hesitate: American Idol.

“I would’ve been up there with my girl Fantasia,” she says, “Not her season though — she would’ve beat me. But I woulda been in there!”

In celebration of the episode, the limited-edition Popeyes x Hot Ones menu is now available at participating Popeyes locations and on the Popeyes app and website starting September 15. The menu includes spicy takes on classic items — and if Keke’s reactions are anything to go by, it’s not for the faint of tongue.

  • Not So Fast! Jussie Smollett Alleges Key Evidence Was Left Out Of Netflix Special

    [ad_1]

Jussie Smollett is determined to clear his name in the alleged botched robbery/assault scheme that halted his career and tarnished his reputation.

    Source: River Callaway / Getty

Though he took part in the new Netflix documentary, The Truth About Jussie Smollett, he is now claiming that key evidence was left out of the final cut of the project. Evidence that he says would further turn the lens on the Chicago Police Department’s cover-up of his attack. According to his reps, there were more than 10 crucial points completely ignored by the latest look inside the 2019 case, including witness tampering, a failure to run DNA found on the evidence, and the CPD’s history of scandal.

“The FBI tested the rope. The Osundairo brothers’ DNA is not on it. Jussie’s DNA is on the rope, as well as an unknown man’s DNA. No one ever tested the DNA of the unknown man to find out who he is,” a statement from Smollett’s reps reads. “The FBI DNA results came in March 2019, before the charges against Jussie were dropped the first time. Jussie’s lawyers did not show the DNA evidence to the jury. Jussie was never told about it and found out about
    it two years after trial.”

The former Empire actor’s reps says though he participated in the documentary, he refused payment while others were compensated and had no editorial input on a final cut before it aired. Because of this, many of the questions that have followed the case remain unanswered. Smollett’s trial was a captivating part of the documentary and the case itself; however, his reps claim that major evidence never made it into the courtroom.

“The Osundairo brothers continue to deny that they made a deal with Chicago police but that’s been completely undermined and contradicted by former Chicago Police Chief Spokesman, Anthony Guglielmi, who publicly said the Osundairos brokered a deal with CPD,” the statement reads. “Guglielmi said CPD used Jussie’s Good Morning America interview to trick the brothers into thinking Jussie ID’d them. On GMA, Jussie simply said the men in the photo were Jussie’s attackers, but never said he knew who those men were or that they were the brothers.

The actor’s reps also allege that the CPD pressured one of the witnesses in the case, Anthony Moore, to change his story in an effort to paint Smollett as a liar.

“Anthony Moore was repeatedly pressured to change his story. He told CPD the man he saw was White, yet was taken to a lineup of all Black men,” the statement reads. “Moore also testified that Sean Wieber, of Dan Webb’s special prosecutor team, repeatedly pressured him to change his testimony and say the suspect was Black. Moore refused, spoke about the pressure by Sean Wieber at trial, and pointed out Sean Wieber in open court.”

Smollett and his team also allege that the CPD altered surveillance video, assigned detectives with extensive misconduct allegations to the case and allowed an officer, Richard Hagan—who’d been sued for tampering with evidence in the controversial Laquan McDonald murder trial resulting in a $5 million payout from the city—to laud over the footage that could have potentially cleared the actor’s name.

Hoping to put this firmly behind him, Smollett is moving full steam ahead with music released under Dallas Austin’s new and improved Rowdy Records imprint and will be joining the new season of Fox’s Special Forces.

One thing’s for sure, his story hasn’t changed since the beginning.

  • Tiffany Haddish Finally Addresses Rumor She Welcomed A Child With Jason Lee: ‘The Whole World Has Lost Their Mind Over This Beautiful Baby’

    [ad_1]

Tiffany Haddish is finally setting the record straight on her rumored baby, whom fans were convinced she welcomed with Hollywood Unlocked‘s Jason Lee.

    Source: Chelsea Guglielmino / Getty

The actress and comedian continued her weeklong guest-hosting gig on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Tuesday, Aug. 19, and during her monologue, she finally addressed claims that she had welcomed a baby with her good friend Jason Lee.

This comes a few weeks after the star left fans wondering if she had secretly welcomed a child after she posted a snap with Lee while holding a baby. Though the pair were obviously trying to stir up some drama with the post, captioning their joint baby pic with, “Cats out the bag,” Haddish acted like she didn’t understand all of the confusion around her upload.

“There is a personal matter I feel must be addressed,” she began during her monologue. “Two weeks ago, I put something on the Instagram that made everyone go a little crazy. It was a picture of me and my friend Jason Lee posing with the baby and the caption, ‘Cats out the bag.’ ”

She continued, “For some reason, people saw this and thought I had a baby. “Like, there were articles about this everywhere. Even my own relatives were asking if I had a secret baby, which is kind of insulting because they are all living in my house and blocking me from getting any d**k.”

Haddish went on to ask Lee, who was in the audience, what he thought about the rumors. He also played coy, once again acting like he didn’t know why the post was met with so much confusion.

“The whole world has lost their mind over this beautiful baby,” he said, with Haddish adding, “We just took a picture with a baby and then that went crazy so now we got a godbaby.”

The comedian continued, “Jason, the offer still is on the table if you want to make a real baby together,” she teased, adding, “You know I’m traditional.”

Lee responded, “And I’m still gay.”

That’s when Haddish addressed the claims head-on, saying: “So just to be clear, I did not have a baby, but I am open to it…Wide open to it.”

“I even have a list of potential baby daddies,” the actress continued, naming stars like Tom Cruise, Jason Momoa and Brad Pitt. She also included New York Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, broadcaster Melvin Robert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! producer Ken Crosby, actor Pedro Pascal and the character Marcus Winfield, played by Toby Sandeman, on the Netflix series Running Point.

“Now, if you or someone you know wants to put a baby in me, please reach out on social media using the hashtag #PastramiMommy,” Tiffany concluded.

London Stock Exchange Fires Wannabe Zimmerman For Harassing & Threatening Florida Teen For ‘Walking While Black’ In His Own Neighborhood

    [ad_1]

Another example of racial profiling has surfaced, leaving many of us once again asking: when will this stop? A Florida teen, who was simply out for a walk in his own neighborhood, was targeted by a group of non-Black men who followed him, harassed him, and questioned his right to be there.

Source: EyeEm Mobile GmbH / Getty

What should have been a peaceful stroll to make a phone call turned into a 10-minute nightmare of relentless suspicion and intimidation.

Sound familiar? #RestInPeaceTrayvonMartin and the list of all other names whom police harass.

Thankfully, the victim is still alive.

A Walk Turns Into Racial Profiling

The disturbing footage, captured by the teen and posted by his mother on TikTok, shows several men trailing the young Black male through a gated Sarasota community.

Despite his clear statements that he lived in the neighborhood, the men refused to believe him, hurling accusations and insults.

One even called him a “loser.”

As reported by Yahoo Finance, the teen’s mother explained that her son had been walking to find better cell reception after Hurricane Milton knocked out power in their home. What he encountered instead was a group of men who saw his presence as a threat based solely on the color of his skin.

The situation escalated when one of the men angrily reached into a vehicle, attempting to retrieve a gun.

Fortunately, another neighbor held him back before the confrontation could become even more dangerous. According to NewsOne, the parallels to the murder of Ahmaud Arbery are haunting—Arbery was chased and killed in 2020 while jogging through his own Georgia neighborhood, also targeted for simply existing while Black.

Though this young man’s story didn’t end in violence, the fear and trauma he endured are undeniable.

    Viral Video Sparks Accountability

    US-CRIME-COURT-RACISM-PROTEST

    Source: STAN HONDA / Getty

As is too often the case, it took a viral video and public outrage to spur any kind of accountability. The footage has amassed more than 5 million views on TikTok, with users flooding social media to demand justice.

One of the men in the video, identified as Stephen Carega, worked for the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG). As the pressure mounted, LSEG launched an internal investigation, leading to Carega’s suspension and subsequent firing.

In a statement shared by Yahoo Finance, an LSEG spokesperson confirmed details.

“The individual involved was initially suspended while we investigated the matter. The investigation has now concluded, and the individual’s employment has been terminated.”

The company also reiterated its zero-tolerance policy against racism and harassment, but the damage has been done.

No corporate statement can erase the fact that, in 2024, Black people still have to fear for their safety while doing the most basic of things—walking through their own neighborhoods.

Racial Profiling Remains a Constant Threat

As the video continues to circulate online, the story has become another grim reminder that racial profiling is still very much alive in America. It’s exhausting to watch these same stories play out time and time again, where the burden of proof is placed on Black people just to justify their presence.

The teen’s mother, in her TikTok post, expressed both relief that her son made it home safely and frustration over the ordeal.

“I do not want to live in a community that does not welcome me and my children because [of] the color of our skin.”

Social media sleuths claim to have identified the other members of the wannabe lynch mob, and hopefully, this will lead to more consequences than just losing a job.

This incident, like many others before it, forces us to confront the reality that the US still suffers with race matters. Though Carega was quickly removed, it’s clear that more needs to be done to stop these incidents from happening in the first place.

The first and perhaps only Presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Donald Trump will likely draw millions of viewers and voters who are intensely curious about how each candidate will bolster his or her position in the hotly contested race for The White House. According to MSNBC’s on-air reporting via Nielsen, the largest viewership of a debate came in 2020 during the Vice Presidential debate when then-Senator Harris stood toe-to-toe-to-wing with Vice President Mike Pence and the infamous fly that refused to depart from the top of his head. 58 million people tuned in to watch the exchange-of-ideas-turned-viral-spectacle and tonight’s proceedings should easily surpass that number when the ratings are released.

Both candidates have agreed to the rules set forth by the host, ABC, and here they are via CNN:

The network’s rules also state that there will be no audience, the candidates will not be permitted to have written notes, no staff can visit them during the two commercial breaks and the candidates cannot ask questions of one another.

The one unmentioned rule that the Harris campaign fought to change is that each candidate’s microphone will be muted while the other speaks. Harris’ handlers wanted the microphones to be open, ostensibly to allow the Vice President to fact-check Trump’s…loosely-based-on-reality comments and to potentially catch him on a hot mic making offensive comments about Harris that would dominate social media and the subsequent news cycle. Unfortunately for the Harris campaign, their protests fell on deaf ears.

Despite this, Trump couldn’t control his ramblings and word salad outbursts. In one particularly strange moment, Trump went on a wildly nonsensical rant about pets being eaten by illegal immigrants.

In another “WTF?!” moment, Trump claimed that VP Harris supported “transgender surgery for illegal immigrants in prison”. We can’t make this s#!t up.

The election is on November 5, 2024. Be ready. Get your people ready. Don’t boo, vote!

Rev. Al Sharpton Introduces Exonerated Five’s DNC Speech About Donald Trump Calling For Their Wrongful Execution: ’45 Wanted Us Unalived’

Few DNC speakers embodied that “We won’t go back” like the Exonerated Five, saying Donald TrumpDonald Trump hasn’t changed since he called for their modern-day lynching as teens. “He wanted us dead,” Yusef Salaam said during their speech.

    Source: Chip Somodevilla / Getty

On Thursday, Rev. Al Sharpton took the stage to introduce the men during the final night of the Democratic National Convention. The National Action Network founder clarified that his organization does not endorse political candidates, but it does report where they stand on serious issues. According to the New York Times, he spoke about collaborating with Vice President Kamala Harris to unite the country after watching 40 years of Trump’s shady shenanigans.

“I’ve worked with Kamala Harris. In every job she had she has consistently committed to making government work for those who have been disadvantaged. All Donald Trump has been consistent about is making himself richer and sowing division to make that happen,” Sharpton said.

“I see a candidate that sought to reform and uphold the law and a man who wrongly assumes that his mugshot appeals to Black Americans,” he continued with the comparison.

The Exonerated Five Speak Out About The Danger Of Re-Electing Donald Trump

Sharpton recalled the one time Trump took a stance on racial issues. Trump used his wealth to not only add to the injustice and hatred against the teens called the Central Park Five but also urged New York State to “bring back the death penalty.” Except for Antron McCray, the Exonerated Five — Kevin Richardson, Dr. Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana — took the stage to remind the world of Trump’s true colors.

“Thirty-five years ago, my friends and I were imprisoned for a crime we did not commit. Our youth was stolen from us. Every day, as we walked into the courtroom, people screamed at us, threatened us because of Donald Trump,” Wise explained.

“He spent $85,000 on a full-page ad in the New York Times calling for our execution. We were innocent kids, but we served a total of 41 years in prison,” Wise added about the wrongful convictions overturned in 2002.

When asked about the ads asking New York to reinstate the death penalty in 2019, Trump refused to admit he was wrong about the wrongfully convicted men he villainized. As of 2019, the presidential nominee currently facing a RICO case after a 34-count felony conviction still refuses to apologize. “You’ve got people on both sides of that,” he said, echoing his cop-out about the 2017 Charlottesville white nationalist rally that resulted in the death of protestor Heather Heyer.

“Forty-five wanted us unlived; he wanted us dead. Today we are exonerated because the actual perpetrator confessed and DNA proved it. That guy says he still stands by the original guilty verdict. He dismisses the scientific evidence rather than admit he was wrong,” NYC City Councilman Salaam said about Trump taking even less accountability than the actual perpetrator of the 1989 rape.

“He has never changed. And he never will. That man thinks that hate is the animating force in America. It is not. We have the constitutional right to vote. In fact, it is a human right. So let us use it,” Salaam said. “When they see us, America will finally say goodbye to that hateful man.”

The full-circle moment with Rev. Al Sharpton set social media ablaze. This reminder of Trump’s bloodthirsty abuse of power and privilege seemed to even get through to those joking that his mugshot and felony conviction automatically made him relatable to Black people.

Between this tragic case and D.L. Hughley‘s apology for repeating misinformation about Kamala Harris without research, it’s clear who actually benefits from perpetuating “fake news” and who suffers because of it.

Chicken & Poli-trickin’: Donald Trump’s Chick-Fil-A Charade With Black Conservatives Slammed As ‘Staged’ ‘Insult To Our Intelligence’

    [ad_1]

Critics say Donald Trump went looking for more Black votes with a chicken run to Chick-fil-A and dismissed the “staged” stereotypical stunt as an “insult.”

    Source: Megan Varner / Getty

According to WSBTV, the former president bought over 30 milkshakes for a group of Black students at an Atlanta Chick-fil-A, a moment that went viral. The event on Wednesday, where some students appeared to support Trump, quickly became a topic of discussion among political commentators and strategists.

This interaction was filled with photo ops, autographs, “The Lord’s Chicken,” as Trump referenced, and discussions about President Joe Biden’s leadership. Many videos surfaced online with the group of young patrons cheering alongside Trump, “ Bye Bye Biden.”

“I don’t care what the media tells you, Mr. Trump, we support you,” said Michaelah Montgomery. Trump supporters quickly portrayed the clips as an “organic” moment and proof of his popularity as the “people’s president.” However, even Montgomery resents this narrative.

“It’s really disheartening to see that the media makes it seem like we just stumbled into a Chick-fil-A and he bought us milkshakes,” she told ABC News.

Unsurprisingly, Montgomery is actually the leader of a Black conservative organization. This is just the former Georgia Republican Party staffer’s latest event to entice her HBCU peers. It might be promising for Trump’s team to sincerely collaborate with young Black voices. Instead, they became faces of more misinformation.

Chasing Votes: Trump’s Play For Georgia

However, this staged photo op isn’t the whole picture. Experts urge caution in interpreting this event as indicative of a shift in support among Black voters toward Trump. As much as Trump screams that the media is fake, let’s be real. The deep political and economic issues affecting Black communities warrant more scrutiny about Trump’s policies.

After all, Trump currently faces charges in Georgia for allegedly interfering with the last presidential election. Trump’s SCOTUS appointees already helped dismantle Affirmative Action and reproductive rights under Roe v. Wade. His other supporters in office have their sights set on undoing voting rights next. Days before the Chick-fil-A giveaway, Trump promised “dramatic changes” to civil rights to fight “anti-white racism.”

According to an interview with theGrio and Tolulope Kevin Olasanoye, executive director of the Democratic Party of Georgia, the chicken shenanigans don’t represent Black voters any more than Diamond and Silk

I don’t want to overblow a minor viral moment inside of a Chick-fil-A in Atlanta and make it seem like … Donald Trump is winning Black people,” said Olasanoye.

Trump’s Chick-fil-A Charade: More Than Just Milkshakes?

Pay attention to what Trump is doing. Trump’s outreach efforts to Black voters have been marked by a series of high-profile stunts. Here, he’s buying milkshakes for nearby HBCU students of Clark-Atlanta University, Spelman College, Morehouse College, and Morris Brown College. Remember his promoted custom sneakers?

According to Fox News host Raymond Arroyo, TrumpSneakers at SneakerCon gave the former president a political boost since “Black America loves sneakers… certainly in the inner city.”

Oh, and don’t forget Trump claims that his public mugshot and criminal charges make him more relatable to Black voters.

So, let’s decode the strategy, shall we? It’s all about optics and moments that make for good TV—or good Twitter, in this case. Trump’s team is likely betting that these snapshots with Black students will paint him in a more favorable light. But do these moments come with any meaningful political plans? Or is it just another photo op to add to the campaign highlight reel?

Skeptics Speak Out: Analyzing the Applause

    Source: Megan Varner / Getty

Political analysts point out that these outreach initiatives don’t offer much substance for Black American’s concerns about economic inequality, criminal justice reform, and healthcare disparities.

Critics slammed his strategy to win over Georgia in the upcoming election as downright offensive and stereotypical. Where does he expect to find common ground? A sneaker convention and a chicken spot.

Thinking Black voters relate to Donald Trump because he spent twenty minutes handing out freebies at a fast-food restaurant is yet another insult to our intelligence – and perfect example of just how disingenuous Trump’s outreach to Black voters continues to be,” said Jasmine Harris, a spokesperson for the Biden campaign, in a statement via AP News.

This disconnect raises questions about how he can actually serve most Black voters. The fact that this event was “staged” with a Candace Owens understudy just makes matters worse. Trump refers to the franchise owner hosting the event as a member of his golf club.

    Election Countdown: Crunching the Numbers

While Trump parades around with fast food, let’s keep our eyes on the prize.

It’s concerning if this is the best Trump’s hail-mary with 206 days left until the election. No amount of rappers consigning or forcing his name onto stimulus checks will outweigh the impact of his return to power.

Statistics from Roper Center for Public Opinion Research show that in the 2020 U.S. In The Presidential Election, about 12% of Black voters supported Donald Trump.

In that particular election, Pew Research Center states that about 8% of Black voters identified as Republican. Yet, based on the pre-election polls of 2024, this amount increased to 22%. The Black Republic statistics doubled, particularly among young voters. So clearly, Trump’s team has a strategy hard at work.

The Black community is more than a photo-op. Black people are more than the insulting images painted by corrupt systems.

    Protect your votes. Stay informed.

Rally Rage: Donald Trump Predicts ‘Bloodbath For The Whole Country’ If Not Reelected

    [ad_1]

In a spectacle that only #MAGAmaggots would condone, Donald Trump incites his political party with his blend of bombast and audacity, threatening a “bloodbath.”

    Source: KAMIL KRZACZYNSKI / Getty

The occasion? A rally in Vandalia, Ohio, focused on endorsing Senate hopeful Bernie Moreno. He’s running against Democrat Sherrod Brown for U.S. Senate whom Trump touts as Ohio’s next big “America First” warrior.

Moreno finds himself in a three-way race, contending against both a Trump-aligned Secretary of State Frank LaRose and state Sen. Matt Dolan, who carries the torch for the more traditional Republican faction.

Trump Threatens A “Bloodbath” If He’s Not Reelected

But Trump wasn’t just there to sing praises for Moreno. He turned the event into a full-on Trump show, complete with dire warnings of a “bloodbath” should he not clinch victory in the coming election.

Yes, you read that right. According to HuffPost, the man has taken fear-mongering to a whole new level, claiming that if he’s not back in the driver’s seat, it’s not just gonna rain—it’s gonna pour… blood.

“If I don’t get elected, it’s going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that’s going to be the least of it. It’s going to be a bloodbath for the country,” said Trump.

Former President Trump Holds A Campaign Rally In Ohio

    Source: Scott Olson / Getty

Now, in true Trump style, he claims he’s ready to save Social Security from the clutches of President Joe Biden. According to Trump, Biden’s presidency spells doom for the auto industry and economy.

Biden’s team fires back, accusing Trump of promoting political violence–once again, harking back to the insurrection.

“He wants another January 6, but the American people are going to give him another electoral defeat this November because they continue to reject his extremism, his affection for violence, and his thirst for revenge,” said Biden campaign spokesperson, James Singer.

And what’s a Trump rally without a bit of personal drama? The rally exposed Bernie Moreno, who once wasn’t a Trump fan, calling him a “lunatic” and a “maniac.”

But what a coincidence that Moreno now stands shoulder to shoulder with Trump, bashing those who criticize the former head of the White House.

Trump also defends Moreno against some eyebrow-raising allegations similar to his own. From criminal indictments to profiles on adult websites allegedly linked to Moreno’s past, it’s clear they both share a disdain for what Trump calls “Democrat fake treatment.”

According to Politico, the rally finishes with Trump criticizing Biden over Social Security and dehumanizing immigrants. The event underscored not just the political divide but the sheer spectacle of Trump’s undiminished influence in GOP politics.

“When I’m President of the United States, we will demand justice for Laken on day one. My administration will terminate every open border policy of the Biden administration,” said Trump.

So there you have it, folks—a day in Ohio filled with pipe dreams, false promises, and violent threats. Trump’s endorsement of Moreno sets the stage for a heated GOP primary.

Will the cases against Trump halt his campaign? As the political theater unfolds, one thing’s for sure: the road to the election is anything but dull.

Florida has finally had enough and that’s saying a lot because, well…Florida.

For several years now, the folks who live in Miami Beach and surrounding areas of the Sunshine State have grown weary of the chaos that ensues during spring break and have been publicly campaigning for the unofficial American social holiday to end. When we say “publicly campaigning” we’re not just talking about city council meetings and newspaper articles, we’re talking about money spent to actively market against spring break.

BOSSIP has been reporting on the lunacy of the week-long vacation that includes, sexual assaults, riots, fights, mass arrests, fatal shootings, and full-blown states of emergency. In the same way that Freaknik had reached heights of debauchery that were no longer tenable for a city looking to maintain order and decency, it looks like spring break has finally come to an end. At least that’s what Florida Governor Ron Desantis hopes.

According to a CNN report, 14o state troopers have been deployed to Miami Beach and other popular areas of Florida to shut s#!t down for young folks who think they’re about to catch a vibe while they’re out of school.

“We at the state level stand ready to help our local communities maintain order,” DeSantis said Tuesday.

“We don’t welcome mayhem,” DeSantis said. “The state has a lot going on, it’s a fun place to be at… we want to see people do that, but we also are going to insist that people respect the law.”

The shootings that occurred last during spring break ’23 led to the enforcement of a midnight curfew and we won’t be surprised if that curfew is reinforced this year. Only time will tell if the police presence makes a difference but we fully expect to see shenanigans scrolling down our social media timelines.

'American Fiction' Director Cord Jefferson Addresses How Black Artists Are Pushed Into 'Revolving Door Of Trauma And Misery' When Creating

    [ad_1]

We’re finishing the fourth quarter super strong when it comes to entertainment, particularly films.

    Source: Variety / Getty

AMERICAN FICTION, Cord Jefferson’s hilarious directorial debut, arrives in theaters everywhere Friday, December 22nd, and our Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden had a chance to chat with him about the film — which confronts our culture’s obsession with reducing people to outrageous stereotypes.

Jeffrey Wright stars as Monk, a frustrated novelist who’s fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk uses a pen name to write an outlandish “Black” book of his own, a book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and the madness he claims to disdain.

We were fortunate to catch an early virtual Q&A with Cord Jefferson, who based the film on the novel Erasure by Percival Everett. After hearing Jefferson speak about how Everett’s novel resonated with him, one of our first questions to Jefferson, who has worked as a writer for successful TV shows like The Good Place, Watchmen, Master Of None, and Survivor’s Remorse, was about his own experiences in Hollywood.

“I’ve had a couple of instances in which executives will read scripts of mine and say in so many words, ‘We want you to make this character blacker,’” Jefferson told BOSSIP. “And I always respond to that with just like, ‘OK,’ because it’s never directly to me, it’s always through like emissaries and I always say, ‘Go back to them and ask them what Blacker means. Ask them what they mean by Blacker.’ Of course they never answer that question because they know that if they were trying to answer that question they would sound ridiculous and they make fools of themselves, even more so than they already have.”

Jefferson also shared stories with us that he heard from colleagues, including a particularly dark one that included a racial slur.

“I had a friend who was working on a TV show once, and the showrunner turned to her in front of the entire all white staff,” Jefferson shared. “She’s a Black woman and the rest of the staff was white, and the showrunner turned to her on her first day on the job and said, ‘What do you think Blackie?’ In front of the entire staff. This is like 10 years ago. This was not 1952, this is like 2014 or 2015.”

Jefferson also acknowledged that these experiences aren’t isolated to writing for film and television. He recalled how his days as a journalist often meant constantly being assigned to cover Black trauma.

“Before I started working in TV and film, I was working in journalism and journalism was very much like, ‘Would you write about Mike Brown getting killed?’ ‘Would you write about Trayvon Martin getting killed?’ ‘Would you write about Breonna Taylor getting killed?’ Will you write about this racist thing that somebody said about President Obama?’” Jefferson told BOSSIP. “Constantly. This revolving door of trauma and misery and it’s like, is this all that we have to offer with our work as writers?”

These experiences reflect those of so many Black professionals, simply trying to make a living while pursuing their dreams. The bigger issue, Jefferson says, is that people outside of the culture often fail to recognize that they also have a part to play in confronting Black trauma.

“When they come to black people all the time and say like, ‘This is what you need to do,’ suggests that racism and the problems that come from racism are a Black issue,” Jefferson continued. “This is a two way street. Racism is just as much a white issue as it is a Black issue. Why are you not coming to white people and asking them to write about Mike Brown and Trayvon Martin, you know? They have a part to play in all of this too, it literally is a national issue. and treating it as if only Black people can talk about this is wrong. The cop that killed him was white right? So isn’t that just as applicable to white people’s lives as it is to our life? Why aren’t white people defined by these incidents the way that you try to define Black people by these incidents? That was a frustrating aspect of working in journalism, and I thought that I would get away from it when I started working in entertainment, because it’s fictional stories right? But still people are coming to me like, ‘Well why don’t you write about slaves?’”

    American Fiction assets

As you can imagine, American Fiction is every bit as thought-provoking as the questions Jefferson is asking. The film’s complexity also stretches beyond race, into class because Monk and his family reflect the very real fragility that many members of the Black upper middle class face.

“Black people have, for any number of reasons by design, not been able to achieve generational wealth in this country,” Jefferson responds when asked about the precarious nature of Monk and his family’s status. “That has been elusive for the vast majority of black people in this country. The thing that I wanted to portray was that essentially like there was one breadwinner. The father was successful, he had sort of like built up a successful practice, but you see how precarious things are once he’s gone… Fortunately they made enough to educate their children but also their children are going through it now too. See how quickly a divorce can totally alter your financial future? That is the problem with the difference between just general affluence and like real wealth. That precarity is very real.”

Jefferson even shared how his own financial security might have been in jeopardy had the WGA strike lasted longer this year.

“I’ve made a lot of money in my TV career and then I bought a house,” Jefferson shared. “I’ve earned far more money than anybody in my family ever has, but then we went on strike. I had an overall deal, which is how I really made all my money, and there is a real significant chance that I was going to lose my overall deal [had the strike lasted] and if that were to happen it would have all gone away. Not necessarily immediately, but if they said ‘Your overall deal’s gone, you’re not getting paid after this,’ I would have been scrambling to figure out how I was going to keep my house, which is the first real thing that I’ve ever owned.”

Ironically, our conversation with Jefferson happened when the SAG-AFTRA strike was still in full swing, so we were unable to speak with his incredible cast, which, in addition to Jeffrey Wright, also includes Erica Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae and Sterling K. Brown — who is quite the scene stealer as Monk’s gay brother, newly uncloseted and completely unhinged.

“Erika Alexander was such a huge part of my childhood,” Jefferson told BOSSIP. “I watched Living Single all the time. We went out to dinner a couple weeks ago and she was telling me something that I’d never heard before, which is that there were studies that showed that there was a spike in Black female lawyers when that show was on the air, because of the Maxine Shaw effect. Then all of a sudden it’s like Erika Alexander is not in movies anymore she’s not in TV shows anymore. This is a woman that is so, so, so talented, that is so, so, so beloved and had a huge impact on me when I was a kid. I loved giving her like a bigger role. I loved giving her the romantic lead in the film.”

    American Fiction assets

Source: Amazon MGM Studios / Amazon MGM Studios

“I love that Leslie Uggams is 81 and still going,” Jefferson continued. “I love seeing her in there. I love Sterling K. Brown. I think that Sterling K. Brown has obviously gotten a bunch of television accolades, but I don’t think anybody has seen him like this before. This is a total departure for him. Tracee Ellis Ross, people think of her as ‘Oh she’s a sitcom actor.’ No, Tracee Ellis Ross has range… I just really want these people here because because they’re tremendous in the movie and I wish that they were at the forefront receiving these accolades because too frequently Black actors aren’t given that opportunity.”

    1. “Jeffrey is amazing,” Jefferson added. “The second time I ever saw Jeffrey Wright act was Basquiat it was the first time I ever saw him in the lead in anything because before that I saw him in Angels in America, not on Broadway but in the Mike Nichols adaptation of HBO and then I saw him as a lead in Basquiat and then I didn’t see him as a lead in anything ever after that, and it was like ‘Why?’ This guy’s amazing. Everybody agrees that he’s an amazing actor. Everybody agrees he’s one of the most talented actors in America, why is he not in the lead more often? Why is he never given that opportunity? I just love these people. I think they’re amazing. They were all amazing to work with and I want them to be receiving these flowers because they deserve them.”

We’re in total agreement. Go see American Fiction in theaters everywhere December 22!

Alexis Skyy Reveals Iconic Kardashian Moment That Happened At Diddy’s 50th Birthday Party

For this week’s episode we were joined by model, entrepreneur and reality star Alexis Skyy. The interview took place back in late October — but ironically we touched on a subject that’s been in the headlines as of late — Diddy and his famous parties! Every episode we ask our guests to tell us about one of their most interesting celebrity encounters. It turns out that some of Alexis’ most memorable ones have happened at Diddy parties.

“I had an iconic moment with the Kardashians, we were all waiting in the bathroom together,” Alexis Skyy recalled. “I was at Diddy’s 50th birthday party and I was in their section. We were partying together so I met Kim and Kylie and Khloe. So super sweet. They knew about my daughter. They asked about Lay Lay. I’m like ‘Oh my God, they really know about me?!’.”

Kardashian/Jenners aside, Alexis Skyy’s daughter Alaiya narrowly missed being born at a different Diddy party.

“My water broke at Diddy’s New Year party, but I didn’t know I was having contractions,” Alexis Skyy revealed to the Alright, So… Boom! hosts. “I didn’t really know. I thought I was using the bathroom a lot. I was actually going into labor… I started feeling sick and I didn’t really know what contractions were like, my mom wasn’t there. When I got off the plane on the first, my water broke that day but you know she was still young so they had to lgive me a steroid shot to keep her in, but then she decided she was coming out, so she came out on the 4th.”

Sounds like Alaiya was born to be litty — kinda like her mom. Alexis also spoke to the ASB crew about motherhood and doing her part to protect her daughter.

“I have a six-year-old, going on like 30, it’s mom life,” Alexis said. “It’s ups and downs, it’s finding balance. I think know I’m more mindful when it comes you know protecting my brand and the things that I’ve put out on the Internet because back then I didn’t really think she can grow up and it’ll follow her, she’ll be in school like, ‘Oh your mom did this or your mom did that,’ so now I’m more so cleaning my image and just trying to make sure that you know she’s able to be like, ‘That’s my mom,’ yand nobody has anything negative to really say.”

While Alexis says that dating Fetty Wap push started her career, she also told the podcast that she always had a sense she’d find fame some day.

“I’ve always been kind of famous, like my own way and I’ve always kind of been like popular my whole life,” Alexis Skyy recalled. “I knew I was gonna be like a star when I was younger. I was prom queen and you know things like that so I’ve always just been like an IT girl. In my yearbook I put that I was going to be famous. I’ve been in the industry for almost 10 years now.”

Alexis also opened up about her experiences as a teenage runaway and sex trafficking survivor. She now advocates for sex trafficking victims and young mothers.

“I’m at a comfortable stage to speak on it, but nobody wants to keep hearing about it. I’m in a space where I’m trying to let go, but can you ever really let it go? I try not to replay it but I think a part of therapy is speaking on it and using my voice to speak on it is super important. There are different ways of trafficking nowawdays and I recently did a summit on that. I didn’t realize so many girls have gone missing I think it’s super important that if you have the influence and you’re able to help that you do it. One of my goals is to one day create a Skyy House — a safe house for women.”

BOSSIP’s Sr. Content Director Janeé Bolden caught up with acclaimed producer and recording artist Maejor ahead of his appearance at Web Summit in Portugal, to discuss his latest podcast Psychedelic Frequency where he, alongside co-host Natalie Ginsberg from the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), takes listeners into the world of psychedelic therapy. The series offers a great historical perspective, while also introducing some of the world’s foremost experts on MDMA, Ketamine, Ayahuasca, Psilocybin, LSD, and DMT.

In one of our favorite episodes, Maejor takes us to Big Sur’s Esalen Institute for a holotropic breath workshop, but he also explores Berlin’s psychedelic underground, a Los Angeles ketamine clinic, and Guatemala, where doctors are treating opioid dependency with the powerful hallucinogen, Ibogaine.

Check out our candid conversation with Maejor about Psychedelic Frequency below:

BOSSIP: Your previous Audible podcast Major Frequency explored the healing power of sound through science and spirituality, what sparked your interest in the subject?

Maejor: “I got introduced into sound healing first through the spiritual community. I thought it was a little bit woo woo, but I liked how it felt. Then, going through my experience as a cancer survivor, a lot of people started sending me all of these different ways of healing and all these different ideas and the things that resonated with me were related to sound because I was already producing and working so much with sounds and EQ and frequency and already doing it everyday so once I started learning about the healing power of it, it really just gave me a perspective that there was an opportunity to bridge two worlds, the mainstream music world that I’m producing in, and this new world of wellness and healing. So that that’s where it all started.”

BOSSIP: This podcast is really fascinating, I just listened to the episode about holotropic breathwork and was blown away

Maejor: You know it surprised me with the breathwork specifically, because I’ve also had some psychedelic experiences, and it surprised me with the breathwork how intense the experience was, without actually taking any physical substance. It’s just by breathing in that way, for that long of a time your body starts doing some crazy things. That’s what the whole show is really about — the exploration of how to use these things in an intentional way that can actually help your life.

I feel like that conversation is moving more into the mainstream. Everyday people are more open to these ideas and concepts, and even microdosing and meditation and breathwork. All of these different types of modalities are coming into the public, so I think it’s a great time… One of the things we aim with the show is it just really give people a way to do it with intention so whatever you’re trying to get out of it, you can really get from it, versus just rolling the dice.

BOSSIP: Along with holotropic breathing, while I was listening to this podcast I learned of a lot of other substances I wasn’t previously aware of. Did you become more experimental after taking on this project?

Maejor: First I want to say that all the people who did substances within the show were with therapists and in a very clinical controlled setting and they went in with a measured dosage.

They’re just not out here tripping

Maejor: Yeah because that can be dangerous. I don’t want somebody to go into something that’s dangerous, but what we wanted to do is explore, because there are a lot of people who have reported huge benefits from these types of things, so we wanted to explore what was going on, how is it etc… So we found therapists who are already working in this space. In some ways my mind has been opened further. This show definitely did open my mind. Even the holotropic breathing. I had never that before and then we did a 2 1/2 hour session straight. That’s really really a different kind of thing that where you’re doing this breathwork for 2 1/2 hours straight. You do 2 sessions, one in the morning, one at night. You have your therapist, partner, or whoever is there with you, watch you while you breathe and make sure everything’s fine, because you can go into some pretty crazy states. They set up pillows around you so it’s pretty intense.

With the therapist, one of the things they talk about is integration and we will unpack, really reflect and give it time to meditate on the experience. You don’t just go right back into the world. You know get some time and start to process that in whatever way that takes for you, it can depend on your guide or your therapist or whoever is leading you through that experience.

In the introduction to Psychedelic Frequency you talk about wanting to heal the world, how do you feel psychedelics could potentially heal the masses?

Maejor: The way that I look at it is, I call it the journey inward or the journey within. We cannot, each person themselves, cannot heal and cannot change any anything or anyone outside, but if we change ourselves, we go inside… Even something like as simple as conflicts. Two people in a conflict, no one’s going to change from someone saying, ‘You’re wrong about this! What you did was wrong! What you’re doing is wrong!’ Yelling at them or hurting them, doing something to them, that’s not going to change them. The only way someone actually changes is through their consciousness being raised and them coming into their own perspective that, ‘Hey what I’m doing is wrong.’ When you get to that point then you can start to really make some change, start to really do something. So the way psychedelics work is it works with inner sight and inner change, so that causes a ripple effect to the people around you, the world you created around you, the way that you treat people, because what you really start to learn is that as we go deeper in, you start to see how connected we all are and how alike we all are. It’s just growing compassion in a different kind of way, where the other problems just fall away naturally as a result of you realizing it’s actually a waste of time.

Psychedelic Frequency was named one of Audible’s Best Of 2023 and is available for your listening pleasure on Audible now! We highly suggest checking it out for yourself. Besides being extremely informative, we found it really relaxing and calming to listen to and believe Maejor is doing groundbreaking work that we can all benefit from.

What do you think about his theory that psychedelics could ultimately heal the world?
