  • Chiefs assistant Dave Toub: President Trump ‘doesn’t even know what he’s looking at’ on NFL kickoffs

    [ad_1]

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs special teams coach Dave Toub doesn’t care a whole lot about what President Donald Trump thinks of new kickoff rules that were implemented by the NFL in an attempt to make the play safer and more exciting.

Trump became the first sitting president to attend a regular-season NFL game since Jimmy Carter in 1978 when he attended a game between the Washington Commanders and Detroit Lions earlier this month.

Two days later, Trump appeared on “The Pat McAfee Show” and torched the league’s dynamic kickoff rule, which owners voted to make permanent this year. Under the rule, the ball is kicked from the 35-yard line, but every player on the kicking team must wait at the 40 until the ball hits the ground or is touched by a returner inside the 20-yard line.

There are also rules for if a ball does not reach the landing zone, hits the landing zone without being caught or lands in the end zone.

“I think it’s so terrible. I think it’s so demeaning, and I think it hurts the game. It hurts the pageantry,” Trump said. “I’ve told that to (NFL Commissioner) Roger Goodell, and I don’t think it’s any safer. I mean, you still have guys crashing into each other.”

The league has maintained the dynamic kickoff system is safer while producing more kickoff returns. And Toub, who has spent more than two decades coaching special teams in Chicago and Kansas City, didn’t hold back Thursday when he was asked what he thought of the president’s pointed criticism of the kickoff rules.

“He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. He has no idea what’s going on with the kickoff rule,” said the normally reserved Toub, his voice rising. “So take that for what it’s worth. And I hope he hears it.”

  • NFL coach mocks Trump: ‘He has no idea what’s going on’

    [ad_1]

Dave Toub, a special teams coach for the Kansas City Chiefs, mocked President Donald Trump in a recent viral clip, following Trump’s criticism of the new kickoff rule.

“He has no idea what’s going on,” Toub said.

Newsweek has contacted the White House and the Kansas City Chiefs for comment outside of regular working hours via email.

    Why It Matters

The NFL brought in a new dynamic kickoff rule last season, and this rule has now been made permanent.

The rule seeks to make kickoffs, which have long been one of the most dangerous plays in the game, safer. Under the old rules, the team kicking began at their 35-yard line and attempted to kick the ball as far downfield as possible, while the receiving team tries to move the ball up the field as far as they can. The two teams running at each other at top speed means that collisions can occur, and these can potentially be disastrous.

Under the new rule, the ball is still kicked from the team’s 35-yard line. However, every player on the team that is kicking, aside from the kicker themselves, now lines up with one foot at least on the 40-yard line of the returning team, and players must wait to move until the ball either hits the ground or is touched by a returner inside of the 20-yard line.

The president posted on Truth Social in September and urged the NFL to get rid of the rule, which he described as “ridiculous looking” and said it was “at least as dangerous” as the old version.

    What To Know

During a press conference on Thursday, a clip of which has been shared by the official account for the radio station, Sports Radio 810 on X and viewed over 240,000 times, Toub responded to Trump’s criticism of the kickoff rules.

    Loading twitter content…

“He doesn’t even know what he’s looking at. He has no idea what’s going on with the kickoff rule. So take that for what it’s worth,” Toub said.

“And I hope he hears it,” Toub added.

The league has mostly been pleased with the kickoff rule. It led to the rate of kickoff returns increasing from a record-low 21.8 percent in 2023 to 32.8 percent last season, and reduced the rate of injuries on what had been the game’s most dangerous play.

The league has said the rate of concussions dropped 43 percent on returns, with a significant reduction as well in lower-body injuries.

Trump, though, is nonplussed. In September, he described the rule as “the exact opposite of what football is all about,” and dubbed it “Sissy’ football.”

    What People Are Saying

President Donald Trump, in a post on Truth Social in September: “’Sissy’ football is bad for America, and bad for the NFL! Who comes up with these ridiculous ideas? It’s like wanting to ‘roll back’ the golf ball so it doesn’t go (nearly!) as far. Fortunately, college football will remain the same, hopefully forever!!”

One social media user wrote on X, in response to Toub’s remarks: “Like most fans, Trump might not know the technical details of the KO the way an NFL coach should, but I think he voiced what NFL fans are feeling about the KO—it sucks and is weird. Dave Toub, why act like such an arrogant tool?”

Another social media user wrote on X: “I’m now a big fan of Dave Toub.”

    What’s Next

The president is yet to respond to Toub’s remarks.

  • Josh Allen Throws Interception in Final Seconds to Seal Bills’ 23-19 Loss to Texans

    [ad_1]

HOUSTON (AP) — Little went right for Josh Allen in a frustrating game Thursday night against the Houston Texans.

And still he came close to willing the Buffalo Bills to a victory before an interception in the final minute sealed their fate in a 23-19 loss.

Allen took consecutive sacks on the Bills’ final possession, leading to a fourth-and-27, but Buffalo (7-4) gained 44 yards on a short pass from Allen to Josh Palmer, who tossed a lateral to Khalil Shakir.

After a false-start penalty created a fourth-and-6 for Buffalo (7-4), Calen Bullock picked off Allen’s pass at the Houston 9 with 24 seconds left.

“We had a chance to win it there at the end,” Allen said. “We did a good job of staying in it and our defense bailed us out a couple of times. We’ve got to find a way, and we didn’t.”

It was tough for Allen to get anything going on a night he was sacked a career-high eight times and hit four other times. Allen threw for 253 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns after accounting for six touchdowns in a win over Tampa Bay last week.

“When they hit our quarterback 12 times, I don’t like that,” Bills coach Sean McDermott said. “I don’t like that stat at all. It’s just not a healthy way to play and it’s not a good way to keep our quarterback healthy for the rest of the season. We’ve got to play better.”

Allen was slow to get up after a sack in the first half. He said he was OK and that his left shoulder “went a little numb” after he landed on it awkwardly. He was asked about being hit so many times on Thursday.

“It’s not fun,” he said. “I ran into a couple myself. I’ve got to be better at throwing the ball away. Too many times, I was going backwards.”

Allen lost 70 yards on the eight sacks. Will Anderson Jr. had 2 1/2 sacks to lead the Texans. His second one came when he almost took Allen down near the line of scrimmage, but he wriggled away and Anderson got up and chased him across the field to drop him for an 18-yard loss to force a punt early in the third.

The Bills played for a second straight game without receiver Keon Coleman after he was again a healthy scratch after he was late to a team meeting before their last game. He was previously benched for the first series of a loss to New England in Week 5 after also being late for a meeting.

“Nothing new. We’re just taking it one day at a time,” McDermott said. “I thought he had a better week, but we’re taking it one day at a time. It wasn’t that it wasn’t thought about, but we went with the guys that give us the best chance.”

Shakir led the Bills with eight receptions for 110 yards and James Cook had 116 yards rushing and a touchdown.

Allen was disappointed that the Bills couldn’t make plays down the stretch.

“Ultimately, we’ve got to execute, and we didn’t do a good job of that tonight,” he said. “Whatever situation and whatever circumstance, we’ve got to find a way, and we didn’t.”

  • Injured Giants running back Cam Skattebo defends his WWE ‘Monday Night Raw’ appearance

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — While Cam Skattebo has not played football for the New York Giants since undergoing season-ending surgery in late October, the rookie running back still has plenty of people around sports talking about him.

Skattebo attended WWE’s “Monday Night Raw” at Madison Square Garden, along with teammates Abdul Carter and Roy Robertson-Harris. After some back-and-forth banter during a skit, Skattebo shoved wrestler JD McDonagh from behind a barrier and got pushed back, with the clip going viral.

“Cam’s crazy,” Giants starting left tackle Andrew Thomas said Tuesday with a chuckle.

A handful of local radio hosts blasted Skattebo for risking his health by taking part in the show. Skattebo took to social media to defend himself.

“Honestly if you don’t like that I’m having a good time while dealing with a tough time, then just go ahead and unfollow and casually move on,” Skattebo posted on X, formerly Twitter. “I’m not able to play football and have the fun I’ve been having my whole life so I am doing things outside the box trying to find stuff to keep me happy. Enjoy the rest of y’all’s week and just don’t talk about me if you ain’t got nothing nice to say.”

Skattebo, who wore a jersey of Rangers enforcer Matt Rempe at the event, is recovering from a broken right fibula and dislocated right ankle after getting hurt in gruesome fashion Oct. 26 in a loss at Philadelphia. In a video interview with Complex Sports over the weekend, Skattebo showed how well the injury was healing, and he was wearing a protective boot at the Garden.

The 23-year-old also was on the sideline Sunday at the Meadowlands on a scooter and sporting the boot.

ESPN New York’s Chris Carlin said he “could not have been angrier at the just remarkable stupidity shown by Skattebo. He was one of the lone bright spots of this team, and he thinks it’s a good idea to get involved like that.”

Co-host Bart Scott, who played 11 NFL seasons as a linebacker with the Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets, was less vocally critical but still described Skattebo’s participation as “carelessness.”

“Whether you’re play wrestling or wrestling, it’s still a physical act,” Scott said.

WFAN’s Chris McMonigle said “the optics are so bad.” On the same station, Brandon Tierney called it dumb.

“I’m not here to be the buzz kill or holier than thou or the headmaster or the dean of discipline, but, dude, use common sense,” Tierney said. “What happens if there’s a little beer or a little water or a little seltzer on the Garden floor and he slips and he loses control?”

Skattebo responded to that clip on social media by saying his foot was off the ground, adding, “Trust me wouldn’t do anything to jeopardize anything.”

Skattebo, along with quarterback Jaxson Dart, had brought an infusion of energy into the organization before going down. The fourth-round pick out of Arizona State had run for five touchdowns and had two more receiving in his first eight professional games.

Asked Tuesday on a video call with reporters about Skattebo at the Garden, second-year back Tyrone Tracy flashed a smile.

“I wasn’t there last night, but you best believe I was fighting,” Tracy said. “I was fighting at home, though, telling him to duck and sit down. Cam’s a wild man. Everybody knows that. He’s going to go out there and do what he do.”

  • Bryce Young has the Panthers in the playoff chase a year after getting benched

    [ad_1]

When Bryce Young was benched after two games last year, people questioned whether he needed a fresh start on another team.

Young is still in Carolina and has the Panthers in the playoff chase.

The third-year quarterback threw for a franchise-record 448 yards and three touchdowns against the NFL’s No. 1 pass defense to lead the Panthers to a 30-27 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Carolina (6-5) trails the Tampa Buccaneers (6-4) by a half-game in the NFC South, and the two teams will meet twice in the final three weeks.

Both have tough road games in Week 12. The Panthers face the San Francisco 49ers (7-4) on Monday night. The Buccaneers take on the Los Angeles Rams (8-2) on Sunday night.

Young bounced back from an ankle injury in the first quarter against Atlanta to lead a comeback from a 21-7 deficit a week after a disappointing 17-7 loss to New Orleans. If Young continues to play at this level, the Panthers could end Tampa Bay’s streak of four consecutive division titles.

“To me, it’s just my expectation for Bryce to take every game plan and every opportunity and attack it, and he’s been doing that,” Panthers coach Dave Canales said. ”(Sunday) was a day about the whole group. It was about all the guys, the time on task, the side conversations in practices, working together in between drives and really just making it come alive. Finding the completions where they were and extending the play when he needed to. I’m just proud of the way that he just pushed through for his teammates. It just speaks volumes to the type of leader that he’s continued to grow into, and to be able to be available for his guys and find a bunch of different guys in different situations.”

Canales was two games into his first season as an NFL head coach when he decided to bench Young for veteran Andy Dalton. Young, the 2023 No. 1 draft pick, struggled in his rookie season under former coach Frank Reich. He needed more time to learn Canales’ system, watch from the sideline and grow as a player. Canales helped develop Geno Smith in Seattle and Baker Mayfield in Tampa Bay. His patient approach with Young is coming along.

Performances like the one against Atlanta should give Panthers fans reason for optimism that Young can still be a franchise QB.

He has completed 62.7% of his passes for 1,962 yards, 14 touchdowns, seven interceptions and a career-high 86.0 passer rating.

“Everybody in the locker room knew it was bound to happen. We knew that we had in our bag, and specifically Bryce,” rookie wide receiver Tetairoa McMillan said. “But I mean, to turn the tape on, man, Bryce went out there and balled for sure.”

The Detroit Lions may have found a formula to stop the tush push. They stopped Jalen Hurts five of six times on Philadelphia’s version of the QB sneak. Two of the stops were negated by penalty. Still, the Lions had more success than any team against it. They also were one of the 10 teams to vote not to ban the play. None of the other nine teams will play the Eagles in the regular season.

“Respect,” Eagles coach Nick Sirianni said. “They did a good job stopping it.”

The Lions sent a rusher off the edge to pull Hurts back from trying a second effort and also pushed their frontline defenders up the middle.

    It worked.

Bills safety Damar Hamlin overcame suffering cardiac arrest during a game against Cincinnati on Jan. 2, 2023, to not only return to the NFL but was a starter for Buffalo last season.

A pectoral injury sent Hamlin to injured reserve last month, but he says he was built to handle adversity long before he nearly died on the field.

“The toughness and adversities that I’ve already had in my life to even just make it to the point where I’m able to be an NFL athlete, that was the toughest part of my journey,” Hamlin told The Associated Press. “That was really like the toughest navigation. I was built for the chase and I was built to overcome the adversity to be able to persevere through something so heart-wrenching, no pun intended, but you know something so heart-wrenching and something so scary to life, to be able to get myself to a point where I wanted to be able to show that I can compete again at the highest level in the world. So, I think just the foundation that my parents built in me, the foundation of things I had to overcome and the mindset that I had to build myself up into a person carries me through life.”

  • Suspect in killing of

    [ad_1]

The man charged with murder in the Oakland, California killing of beloved Laney College athletic director John Beam made his first court appearance Tuesday.

An arraignment hearing was held for Cedric Irving Jr., who was charged with murder with a gun enhancement by the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office. The 27-year-old did not enter a plea.

Cedric Irving Jr., who has been charged with murder in the killing of Laney College athletic director John Beam, made his initial court appearance on Nov. 18, 2025.

    CBS

Public defender Sydney Levin asked the judge to delay the plea until the next court hearing, which is scheduled for Dec. 16.

Irving is accused of shooting Beam at the Laney Fieldhouse on campus Nov. 13. Beam died from his injuries the following day.

Authorities located Irving at the San Leandro BART station following a manhunt. District Attorney Ursula Jones Dickson said on Monday that a gun found in Irving’s possession at the time of his arrest was registered to him.

Over a four-decade coaching career, Beam was beloved in Oakland and throughout the Bay Area for coaching thousands of student-athletes. He was the longtime football coach at Skyline High School, where he led the Titans to 15 league championships and four undefeated seasons.

Beam went on to coach football at Laney College, where he gained national recognition in the Netflix docuseries “Last Chance U”. His program at Laney was noted for having more than 90% of his players graduating or transferring to four-year schools, and several of his players have gone on to play in the National Football League.

Irving is being held without bail.

  • Keeler: Broncos, Sean Payton want to make Bo Nix’s life easier? Get Marvin Mims Jr. more touches.

    [ad_1]

If you’re going to play with your food, Sean Payton, why not make it filet mignon?

The Broncos are 6-0 this season when Marvin Mims has carried the ball at least once. They’re 11-3 in the regular season when that’s happened over the last two years. They’re 3-1 since September 2024 when Mims has received multiple carries.

It’s all hands on deck, and this ship is wading into Super Bowl waters, just like Sunshine Sean said it would.

J.K. Dobbins, your offensive MVP for Weeks 1-10, is lost for the season. You’re replacing those touches by committee from here on out. A dash of RJ Harvey. A smidgen of Jaleel McLaughlin, now your best downhill, between-the-tackles runner by default.

But might we humbly suggest replacing a pinch of Tyler Badie with more pinches of Mims out of the backfield?

Or Mims out of the slot?

    Or Mims out of anywhere?

You can fake a run game over the last seven games of the regular season. You know when you can’t fake it? Against Buffalo or Baltimore in mid-January. Even at home with 80,000 Broncomaniacs at your back, screaming to Mile High Heaven.

Parker Gabriel’s 7 thoughts after an AFC West-shaping win over K.C., including Bo Nix ‘begging’ Sean Payton to get plays called faster

“(When) I get the ball. I want to make the most out of it,” Mims told me this past summer. “That’s something I pride myself in, is being an explosive playmaker.

“So being a ‘gadget’ guy is a good thing; when someone (ESPN) tells you you’re the NFL’s best at something. It’s something that you kind of raise your ears at … but, yeah, I mean, when I see ‘gadget’ (player) I think, ‘explosive playmaker.’ Whether it’s in the return game, offense, screen game, deep pass, give me the ball. I want to make the most out of it.”

Want to make the most of what’s left of this offense after the bye? Feature more of Mims in it.

The ex-Oklahoma star appeared on 15 snaps against the Chiefs — just 24% of the offensive plays. Fullback Adam Prentice (19 snaps) got more run with the first-team offense against Kansas City than Mims, a two-time Pro Bowl return man.

Yes, some of that was choosing discretion over valor. Mims can’t scare anybody from injured reserve. He’s coming off concussion protocol.

Although by the time the Broncos take the field at Washington on Nov. 30, he’ll be four weeks removed from the ding he took against Dallas on Oct. 26.

That said, do you want to win a Super Bowl or not?

No skill player left at Payton’s disposal is as singularly explosive as Mims. And he reminded us all why against KC with another special-teams masterpiece — 101 punt return yards, a new single-game high, and the most by a Bronco since Trindon Holliday’s 121 in 2013. Mims’ 70-yard runback in the first quarter was another career best, putting the defending AFC champions on their heels at the Chiefs’ 21-yard line.

He’s averaging 11.0 yards per touch from scrimmage since he entered the league. Badie is averaging 7.0 yards. McLaughlin is averaging 4.6 yards. If you don’t want to trust your eyes, fine. Trust the math.

Payton knows how to do quirky, how to improvise when injuries wreck his best-laid plans. In New Orleans, he made Taysom Hill the archetype modern “gadget” weapon. The former BYU star became a 6-foot-2 utility piece. From 2019-2023, Hill bounced between tight end, receiver and quarterback, depending on whatever Sean had cooked up. Hill recorded five straight seasons with Payton in which he threw at least six passes, ran the ball at least 27 times, and picked up at least four receptions. Over those years, Hill averaged 456.8 passing yards, 392.6 rushing yards and 150.4 receiving yards per season.

Broncos stock report: Jahdae Barron emerges as Vance Joseph’s tight-end stopper

Payton is the NFL’s Baron Frankenstein, the mind of a mad scientist merged with Bill Parcell’s crusty soul. So why does it feel as if the only guy who can truly stop Mims with a head of steam in the open field is his own head coach?

  • James Franklin Hired as Virginia Tech’s Coach, Just Over a Month After Penn State Fired Him

    [ad_1]

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — James Franklin was hired as Virginia Tech’s coach on Monday, a little more than a month after he was fired during his 12th season at Penn State.

The Hokies announced the move Monday evening, becoming the first Power 4 football program to fill a coaching vacancy this season.

Franklin was set to be formally introduced at a news conference Wednesday morning.

He was fired by the Nittany Lions on Oct. 12, a day after they lost at home to Northwestern to fall to 3-3.

The 53-year-old Franklin went 104-45 at Penn State, winning a Big Ten championship (2016), a Fiesta Bowl (2017) and a Rose Bowl (2022). Last season, he led the Nittany Lions to a first-round victory in the College Football Playoff.

  • Bengals Receiver Ja’Marr Chase Suspended 1 Game by NFL for Spitting on Steelers’ Jalen Ramsey

    [ad_1]

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase was suspended without pay for one game on Monday for spitting on Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Jalen Ramsey.

Chase spat on Ramsey during a confrontation in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. Ramsey grabbed Chase by the face mask and punched him, which resulted in Ramsey’s ejection.

In announcing the suspension, the NFL said Chase was disciplined under a rule that applies to “any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship.”

When asked if officials saw Chase spit on Ramsey, referee Bill Vinovich told a pool reporter after the game that “we did not see anything that rose to that level at all.”

Chase will miss the Bengals’ home game against New England this weekend. He has a right to appeal the suspension.

Cincinnati is 3-7 and has lost three straight.

Bengals coach Zac Taylor said before the league announced the suspension that he had talked to Chase about the incident.

“It’s like we are trying to make something out of this situation. It’s the only thing that’s kind of upset me as I’m sitting in here,” Taylor said. “For a guy that has done everything we can to build our organization around, he’s been awesome. Not perfect. I’m not perfect. Trust me, I made plenty of mistakes yesterday (that) people don’t see on camera. Unfortunately his was. He’s going to have to own up for that. That will be part of his journey.”

It’s the second time this season that the league has disciplined a player for spitting. Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Jalen Carter was initially suspended one game for spitting on Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott during the first quarter of the Sept. 4 season opener. Carter eventually forfeited his Week 1 game check worth $57,222 and avoided missing any more games because the ejection happened early in the game and the league applied that as time served.

According to the NFL Players Association database, Chase will be docked at least $448,333,33 in base salary as a result of the suspension.

  • Browns QB Shedeur Sanders has a rough NFL debut after relieving the injured Dillon Gabriel

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND (AP) — Shedeur Sanders finally got the opportunity to show what he could do as an NFL quarterback.

In one half of action, the Cleveland Browns rookie showed he still faces a steep learning curve.

The highly publicized son of Deion Sanders entered with 12:43 remaining in the third quarter against the Baltimore Ravens after Cleveland announced that Dillon Gabriel was being evaluated for a concussion. Gabriel was ruled out later in the quarter.

Sanders completed his first two passes, but not much went right after that. He went 4 for 16 for 47 yards with an interception and was sacked twice, finishing with a 13.5 passer rating as the Ravens rallied for a 23-16 victory.

“I don’t think I played good at all. They gave me an opportunity. I didn’t do up to my expectations to get us a win. I have to take it on the chin,” said Sanders, who also scrambled three times for 16 yards.

With Sanders behind center, Cleveland gained 44 yards on 28 plays with four first downs in six second-half possessions, going three-and-out twice.

“We trust our guys to perform. He’s no different, you know, and playing a backup quarterback role, as we’ve talked about over the years, that’s tough to come in there, but we trust him,” coach Kevin Stefanski said. “I know there’s things that he’s going to want to do better, but that’s why we work.”

Deion Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who coached Shedeur in college at Jackson State and Colorado, was quiet on social media Sunday night after his son’s debut.

Sanders became Cleveland’s backup behind fellow rookie Gabriel after Joe Flacco was traded to the Cincinnati Bengals on Oct. 7. However, Sunday was the first time he led the huddle with the first-team offense or threw passes to Jerry Jeudy, Harold Fannin Jr. and Cedric Tillman.

“I think I have heard his cadence like two or three times. I think going out of halftime, we all got on the line, and he said his cadence and we kind of got through it,” guard Wyatt Teller said. “Again, a lot of learning, but he played his heart off, put his heart out.”

On his first snap, Sanders threw a 5-yard pass to Tillman. He completed both of his passes for 12 yards on his first drive but struggled with his footwork. He was sacked for an 11-yard loss by Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton and fumbled, with Teller recovering.

Sanders threw his first interception on his second series. On third-and-10 at the Browns 17, Ravens linebacker Kyle Van Noy got pressure up the middle and hammered Sanders as he released the ball. The throw was off target and picked off at the 30 by Nate Wiggins, who returned it 14 yards.

There was a four-series stretch where Sanders was 0 of 7 with an interception and took a sack.

After Mark Andrews’ 35-yard touchdown run with 2:31 remaining put the Ravens on top, Sanders tried to lead a tying drive. He completed a 25-yard pass to Fannin on the first play. Three plays later, he connected with Jeudy for 10 yards to the Ravens 30.

Sanders and the Browns drove to the Ravens 25 before the drive stalled. Sanders’ final pass intended for tight end David Njoku on fourth-and-5 was short as the Browns (2-8) dropped their third straight.

Sanders did take one shot at the end zone on second-and-5, but missed a throw to Isaiah Bond.

“He just kind of got thrown out there but I think he handled it well. We know what type of player he is and it was good to see him out there,” Tillman said.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said his team didn’t deviate much from its plan when Sanders came in, although they blitzed more often in an attempt to rattle him.

“The game plan was going to be good for their offensive system and what they’re doing. We were not going to change that,” he said. “You don’t know how the quarterback’s going to look exactly, but you just have to take care of your own business.”

A fifth-round pick by the Browns after some projected him to go in the first round, Sanders was inactive for Cleveland’s first five games as the emergency third quarterback after going 17 of 29 for 152 yards and two touchdowns in two preseason games.

Sanders should get his first extensive practice with the first-team offense this week, depending on how long Gabriel remains in the concussion protocol. Stefanski said Sanders would get his first NFL start next Sunday at Las Vegas if Gabriel can’t play. Gabriel completed 7 of 10 passes for 68 yards in the first half in his sixth NFL start.

The Browns have lost three straight.

“I think it’s a lot of things, you know, we need to look at, during the week and go and just get comfortable, even throwing routes, you know, with Jerry (Jeudy) and throwing routes with all those guys,” Sanders said. “So I think that was my first ball to him all year. But other than that, I just think overall we just got to go next week and understand so then we have a week to prepare stuff I like to do.”

  • Georgia up to No. 4 in AP poll, Sooners back in top 10 and Mean Green ranked for 1st time since 1959

    [ad_1]

Georgia moved up one spot to No. 4 in The Associated Press poll Sunday, Oklahoma returned to the top 10 and North Texas, ranked for the first time since 1959, is among three Group of Five teams in the Top 25.

Ohio State, Indiana and Texas A&M were the top three teams for the fifth straight week. Georgia earned its highest ranking since the first week of September and Mississippi was back in the top five after spending three weeks there at midseason.

Oregon and Texas Tech were tied for No. 6, and Oklahoma rose three spots to No. 8 following its win at Alabama. The Sooners were last in the top 10, at No. 6, the second week of October.

Notre Dame remained No. 9 after a 22-point win at Pittsburgh and Alabama dropped six spots to No. 10 after the Sooners ended its eight-game win streak.

Ohio State, which rolled past UCLA to improve to 10-0 for the fourth time in seven seasons, received 57 of 66 first-place votes. Indiana, which beat Wisconsin to go 11-0 for the first time, got eight first-place votes. Texas A&M, whose comeback from a 27-point deficit to beat South Carolina was its largest ever, got one first-place vote, three less than last week.

Georgia’s 35-10 win over Texas was its sixth straight and second over a top-10 opponent. Mississippi, which lost at Georgia a month ago, defeated Florida and is more than 100 points behind the Bulldogs at No. 5.

The Group of Five hadn’t had three teams in the Top 25 since four appeared in last season’s final poll.

The Sun Belt Conference’s James Madison blew out Appalachian State and moved up three spots to No. 21. North Texas is next at No. 22. The Mean Green of the American Conference clobbered UAB 53-24 on the road and have matched their best start in program history.

The last time UNT was 9-1 was in 1959, when the team then known as the Eagles was ranked two straight weeks in November, reaching No. 16. That team lost to New Mexico State in the Sun Bowl to finish 9-2. This year’s UNT team already is eligible for a second straight bowl game and is in the thick of the race for the Group of Five’s automatic CFP bid.

    In and out

    — No. 22 North Texas’ first appearance in the poll in 66 years ends the longest drought by a Bowl Subdivision team.

    — No. 23 Missouri returned after a one-week absence following a win over Mississippi State in which Ahmad Hardy became the first player since 2022 to rush for 300 yards.

    — No. 24 Tulane has won two straight since losing to UTSA and is ranked for the first time this season.

    — No. 25 Houston, fifth among teams also receiving votes last week and idle, were ranked for one week in October.

Louisville (19), Cincinnati (22), Pittsburgh (23) and South Florida (25) dropped out.

    Poll points

    — Voters did what the CFP selection committee did last week, jumping Miami over Georgia Tech to make the Hurricanes the highest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team. Miami easily beat North Carolina State and moved up two spots to No. 14. Georgia Tech, which needed a field goal in the final seconds to edge one-win Boston College, slipped a spot to No. 15.

    — No. 13 Utah has outscored three opponents by a combined 153-49 since losing at BYU and has its highest ranking of the season.

    — No. 17 Texas took the biggest plunge, dropping seven spots.

    Conference call

    SEC (9): Nos. 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 12, 17, 20, 23.

    Big Ten (5): Nos. 1, 2, T-6, 16, 18.

    Big 12 (4): Nos. T-6, 11, 13, 25.

    ACC (3): Nos. 14, 15, 19.

    American (2): Nos. 22, 24.

    Sun Belt (1): No. 21.

    Independent (1): No. 9.

    Ranked vs. ranked

No. 16 Southern California (8-2, 6-1 Big Ten, No. 17 CFP) at No. 6 Oregon (9-1, 6-1, No. 8 CFP): Winner strengthens its position for a CFP at-large bid and keeps alive slim hopes of sneaking into the Big Ten championship game.

No. 23 Missouri (7-3, 3-3 SEC) at No. 8 Oklahoma (8-2, 4-2, No. 11 CFP): Sooners did wonders for their playoff resume by knocking off Alabama on the road and now go for a fifth win over a Top 25 opponent.

  • Ex-Browns QB Bernie Kosar has liver transplant after over a year on the waiting list

    [ad_1]

CLEVELAND — Bernie Kosar received a liver transplant on Monday, more than a year after being placed on the waiting list.

“Hey, I’m out and I’m feeling good. Just ready to enjoy the rest of the week and the rest of our lives,” the former Cleveland Browns and University of Miami quarterback said in a brief video posted on social media following the surgery.

Kosar told Cleveland Magazine last year that he had been diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson’s disease.

The 61-year-old from Youngstown recalled being bothered by liver-related issues for years but brushed them off because he wasn’t sure of the source. A diagnosis of cirrhosis in late 2023 confirmed the specificity and severity of his condition.

He went on the transplant waiting list last July. He was scheduled to receive a liver transplant last weekend but said that it was delayed because the donor’s organ was infected.

During the past week, he has undergone five procedures to stop internal bleeding.

Kosar played in the NFL for 12 seasons after leading Miami to its first national championship during the 1983 season. He grew up rooting for the Browns, who selected him in the 1985 NFL supplemental draft.

Kosar played for the Browns from 1985-93, leading the franchise to three AFC championship game appearances (1986, ’87 and ’89), losing each time to the Denver Broncos. Kosar is third all time in franchise history with 21,904 passing yards.

After being released by the Browns, Kosar joined the Dallas Cowboys for the remainder of the 1993 season and got a Super Bowl ring. He then played for the Miami Dolphins in 1994-96.

The Browns played a tribute video for Kosar before Sunday’ game against the Baltimore Ravens. Coach Kevin Stefanski said Monday that he texted with Kosar on Sunday night and wished him luck.

“Yeah, I mean, Bernie’s my guy. I know that this town has such a special relationship with Bernie from his playing days and then the impact that he’s had on this community over the course of all these years,” Stefanski said. “I didn’t have that experience with Bernie prior to coming here, but since I’ve been here, he has just been such a supportive person of me, so kind to my family. I think he sees my family every game day and just is so good to them. So, he’s a special person. He’s a special Cleveland Brown, and we are all rooting for him and we are all right there with him right now.”

  • Suspect Sought in Shooting That Critically Injured New York Jets Player Kris Boyd

    [ad_1]

NEW YORK (AP) — New York police have released surveillance images of a man sought in the shooting of New York Jets cornerback and special teams standout Kris Boyd.

Boyd remained in critical but stable condition Monday, a day after he was shot in midtown Manhattan. A motive for the shooting remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted by the shooter. No other injuries were reported and no arrests have been made.

The shooting happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday outside a business on West 38th Street near 7th Avenue. Police say a 29-year-old man was shot in the abdomen and taken to Bellevue Hospital, but they did not release his name. New York Mayor Eric Adams’ office identified Boyd as the man who was shot.

The Jets have said they are “aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd” but have declined further comment. Boyd’s agent has not responded to a text message inquiring about the incident.

Boyd hasn’t played this season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on Aug. 18 with a shoulder injury that required surgery to repair.

He signed with New York as a free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of a revamped special teams unit under new coach Aaron Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. But Boyd was hurt during training camp practice Aug. 2 and carted from the field.

Boyd was regarded as a special teams standout during his first six NFL seasons, including most of the last two with Houston.

Boyd played his first four seasons with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by the Vikings out of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad later that season.

Teammates have asked for prayers for Boyd in social media posts following the shooting.

  • Bears beat Vikings 19-17 with game-ending FG set up by Duvernay’s 56-yard kickoff return

    [ad_1]

Devin Duvernay’s 56-yard kickoff return in the final minute for Chicago set up Cairo Santos for his fourth field goal of the game, a 48-yarder as time expired, to push the Bears past Minnesota 19-17 after the Vikings scored the go-ahead touchdown with 50 seconds left.

After J.J. McCarthy ended another erratic performance with five straight completions that culminated with a 15-yard scoring strike to Jordan Addison, Duvernay delivered the clutch response for the Bears (7-3) after nearly blowing a 13-point lead they took into the fourth quarter.

Santos made up for his 45-yard miss with 8:08 remaining by drilling the winner after a critical 7-yard rush by D’Andre Swift, who had 21 carries for 90 yards, pushed the ball into a safer range.

McCarthy, who played with a wrap on his throwing hand after hurting it on a helmet after a follow-through in the previous game, ended consecutive second-quarter possessions with interceptions and had an alarming amount of off-target passes. He finished 16 for 32 for 150 yards and a 47.7 passer rating in his fifth career start.

Caleb Williams, who was drafted by the Bears nine picks ahead of McCarthy last year and is much further down the development road under new coach Ben Johnson, had one of his least effective games this season while going 16 for 32 for 193 yards and scrambling four times for 26 yards.

But Williams logged yet another turnover-free start, letting the defense handle the more meaningful work. Veteran safety Kevin Byard drifted back in his zone with nose tackle Grady Jarrett applying the pressure and picked off McCarthy’s forced throw without set feet for Justin Jefferson to give the Bears the ball at the Minnesota 25 and set up the first kick for Santos.

Chicago Bears cornerback Nahshon Wright (26), left, defends as Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Jordan Addison (3) drops a pass during the first half of an NFL football game, Sunday, Nov. 16, 2025, in Minneapolis.

Then on first down from the Chicago 30, McCarthy threw a fade to the back corner of the end zone for Addison that Nahshon Wright, the former Vikings practice squad player who had an interception return for a touchdown off McCarthy in the season opener, secured with a leaping grab before landing on his back with 35 seconds left before halftime.

After a third-down sack by Andrew Van Ginkel and Myles Price’s 42-yard punt return provided the necessary sparks, the Vikings took over at the 24 early in the fourth quarter and reached the end zone in just two plays without McCarthy doing anything but hand off to Jordan Mason.

The defense kept the Vikings (4-6) in the game the whole way, limiting the Bears to seven of 18 third-down conversions, but the final possession started too deep in their territory to prevent a score.

Rookie Kyle Monangai scored his third rushing touchdown in five games to cap a 15-play, 74-yard drive that put the Bears in front late in the second quarter after three straight punts to start.

Bears: LB T.J. Edwards (hand/hamstring) was inactive. Standout CB Jaylon Johnson (groin), who returned to practice this week, missed his eighth straight game.

Vikings: CB Isaiah Rodgers took a big blow from a head-to-head hit in the second quarter. He was checked out for a head injury before returning for the next drive. … OLB Jonathan Greenard (shoulder) missed his first game in two seasons.

  • Josh Allen Has 3 TDs Passing, 3 Rushing to Outduel Baker Mayfield as Bills Beat Buccaneers 44-32

    [ad_1]

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — Josh Allen threw for three touchdowns and rushed for three more, the last on a rugged 9-yard run with 2:35 left that secured the Buffalo Bills’ 44-32 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

The eighth-year starter and reigning MVP became the first player with two games of three TDs passing and rushing. He did it last year in a 44-42 loss at the Los Angeles Rams.

This time, Allen outdueled fellow 2018 first-round draft pick Baker Mayfield in a shootout that featured nine lead changes.

The Bills benched struggling receiver Keon Coleman in a bid to spark their passing game, and each of Allen’s three touchdown passes went for 25 yards or more. Running back Ty Johnson scored on a 52-yard catch-and-run, Allen found Tyrell Shavers open deep for a 43-yard touchdown, and James Cook scored on a 25-yard reception.

Allen provided the go-ahead score, a 5-yard TD run with 9:06 left. He finished 19 of 30 for 317 yards, and the Bills overcame his two first-half interceptions.

He punctuated his final TD run with a massive spike of the ball. Taking off out of the pocket, Allen was hit at the 4-yard line, and then corralled by Bucs defenders at the 2 before Buffalo’s offensive linemen shoved him across the goal line.

Buffalo (7-3) rebounded from a 30-13 loss at Miami in which Allen and the offense failed to push the ball downfield.

Tampa Bay (6-4) has lost two straight and four of seven.

The outcome was decided with 1:44 left when Mayfield lost a fumble when being sacked by DaQuan Jones. Mayfield finished 16 of 28 for 173 yards with a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a TD.

Sean Tucker rushed for 106 yards and two TDs, and he scored on a 28-yard catch to put the Buccaneers up 32-31 early in the fourth quarter.

The teams began exchanging offensive blows from the beginning in a first half that featured five lead changes and ended with Buffalo leading 21-20 despite possessing the ball for just nine minutes and 50 seconds.

    Bills revamp their receivers

Coleman was a healthy scratch for the first time in his two-year career. Gabe Davis made his season debut after being elevated from the practice squad, and Mecole Hardman made his Bills debut after being signed off the practice squad on Saturday.

Buccaneers: CB Jamel Dean did not return after hurting his hip in the first quarter.

Bills: Hardman did not return after sustaining a calf injury in the second half.

The University of Wyoming was represented by a delegation of students, staff, administrators, trustees and 15 marching band members to honor Allen, one of the school’s most high-profile alums. The school hosted several events over the weekend and was an official sponsor of the game.

The visit comes with Allen scheduled to travel to Laramie for the Cowboys’ game against Nevada on Saturday, when the quarterback’s jersey will be retired. Allen played three seasons at Wyoming before selected seventh overall by Buffalo in 2018.

Buccaneers: Play at the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.

Bills: Visit the Houston Texans on Thursday night.

  • New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd shot early Sunday, source says

(CNN) — New York Jets cornerback Kris Boyd was shot outside a New York City restaurant early Sunday morning, according to a law enforcement source briefed on the situation.

The source said Boyd was shot in the stomach and later was rushed to Bellevue Hospital.

Earlier on Sunday, the New York Police Department told CNN a 29-year-old male was in “critical but stable condition” after being transported to the hospital. The police did not mention Boyd’s name.

In a statement to CNN, the Jets said they were “aware of the situation” involving Boyd, but “will have no further comment at this time.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said in a message on X he was praying for Boyd and his loved ones.

“Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence,” Adams added. “Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic.”

According to the source, the incident happened around 2 a.m. ET outside of a restaurant on 38th Street, near 7th Avenue after a dispute escalated and two shots were fired.

No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing.

The law enforcement source said two cars were spotted on a surveillance camera leaving a parking garage near the restaurant.

Both vehicles pulled over and interacted with Boyd and his group, the official told CNN.

Moments later, the gunman opened fire, striking Boyd and then sped off in one of the vehicles.

The official added investigators are expected to get access to the garage’s surveillance footage and are getting some cooperation from witnesses to the incident.

CNN has reached out to Boyd’s agent for comment.

The New York Post was first to report on the situation.

Boyd was drafted in the seventh round of the 2019 NFL Draft out of the University of Texas by the Minnesota Vikings. He has also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans before signing with the Jets this past offseason.

In August, Boyd was placed on the injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

Jets teammates including linebacker Jermaine Johnson and defensive tackler Harrison Phillips asked for prayers for Boyd.

“Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety,” Johnson said on X.

“Lord, place your mighty hand on him as he fights lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord,” Phillips said on X. “Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him.”
