  • Actress Marlow Barkley Is Keeping It Merry and Bright

Actress Marlow Barkley Is Keeping It Merry and Bright

    [ad_1]

You and Chris O’Dowd were cast first. Did you do any chemistry testing together? Or with Jason Momoa?

I did a chemistry [test] with Jason but not with Chris. I got lucky because Chris and I just clicked on set, which is weird because our characters don’t click immediately in the movie. But we got along really well.

The chemistry test with Jason was on Zoom, and at first, I was really nervous because this was my first time meeting him. But again, he made me feel very comfortable. I had a really fun time reading our scenes together because he actually got up in the middle of our scene to quiet down his dog that was barking. That moment brought me back down to earth, and I was like, “Oh, he’s a real person.” It immediately took away all the stress and ended up being really easy.

Knowing that you’re early in your career, why do you think it’s important to tell these kinds of complex coming-of-age stories? Or is it more about the character that you’re looking to play?

After reading the script, I told the director, Francis Lawrence, during my audition that, even if I don’t get this role, I’ll still watch the movie because I felt very connected to Nemo. Her coming-of-age story, as I was filming it, felt like it was my own coming-of-age story. I felt like I was going on this big journey with Nemo. The things that she realizes in the movie have helped me in real life—to be patient with people and be more aware of my surroundings.

I noticed that you spend a lot of time underwater in Slumberland. But I assume that’s all CGI and special effects, right? What was it like acting through such imagination?

It was pretty insane. Some parts were terrifying. Some parts were thrilling. I think I was so terrified that it became thrilling for some of the scenes. But it has always been my dream to do stunts. So getting to do a lot of my own stunts was really cool. We filmed a lot in a pool, so I was underwater for water scenes.

Oh, wow! I didn’t realize you were really in the water. I thought that was all special effects.

Yes, but the crew was very calm about it. And they were like, “If you ever need a break, just let us know.” So I felt calmer filming those scenes. But there was just one stunt that I did that I was very nervous for (it was when I fell off the boat), and when I was practicing and the waves started going, I was like, “I can’t. I can’t do this. I’m sorry.” My stunt double Giuliana comes up, and she’s like, “You know what? I’m going to show you it’s totally okay. If you can’t do it, let me know, and we’ll put your face on my body.” So she demonstrated it and was talking me through it step by step. Then we started the waves at 50% speed and then 75% and then 100%, and it just became a lot easier.

Well, kudos to you. I’m blown away. I thought that was the magic of cinema, but really, it’s the magic of acting. That’s amazing. You have a lot of solid acting experience under your belt now. You are obviously very multitalented—musicals and stunts now, of course. What kinds of roles are you looking to pursue next?

I really want to be in a horror movie. I’m a scaredy-cat, and I cannot watch horror movies. They freak me out unless I’m with a good group of people. But I would love, love, love to be in a horror movie. I want one that’s like super graphic, a lot of fun makeup. I want a cool fight scene where my nose is bleeding and I’ve got this big injury or I play a monster or I’m possessed. That would be so much fun because I’d get to see what it’s like behind the scenes. … In Slumberland, there was not a lot of big, crazy, bloody action/scary stuff, so it’d be cool to see how horror movies work.

Jenna Ortega Just Wore a Sheer, Lace Dress With the Highest Slit, Like, Ever

    [ad_1]

Jenna Ortega is taking her press tour for Netflix’s new Addams Family series Wednesday very seriously, especially when it comes to her outfits. A month after wearing a completely sheer, black lace dress to Valentino’s S/S 23 show, the Gen Z darling wore a similar, albeit even more daring sheer, lace look for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. This time, though, her dress featured a sky-high slit unlike any we’ve seen before.

For the show, Ortega and her stylist Enrique Melendez chose a long-sleeve, half French lace and half opaque dress from the fashion favorite label Dion Lee and a pair of Christian Louboutin platforms. In addition to the see-through material, it also featured cutouts around the ribs and up to the actress’s hip on one side. Bold? Yes. Shockingly pretty? Also yes.

See her look for Jimmy Kimmel Live! and shop more dresses and skirts with outrageously high (and chic) slits below.

Miranda Kerr Just Dropped Her Holiday Gift Guide, and I Want Everything

    [ad_1]

If I were to pick a celebrity to buy me a holiday gift, Miranda Kerr would be on the top of my list. There’s no doubt about it—the supermodel, entrepreneur, and founder and CEO of Kora Organics has downright impeccable taste.

Unfortunately for me, chances are pretty slim that Kerr will ever handpick a gift for me herself. (She’s a busy woman, after all.) But on the bright side, I think I have a pretty good idea of what she’d gift me since she just released her holiday gift guide for 2022.

As you might expect, there are plenty of beauty and wellness staples on the list (including a few products from Kora Organics, of course). Every gift on Kerr’s list is sure to spark joy for whoever you choose to give it to, but keeping these for yourself is highly encouraged, if you ask me. Keep scrolling for my 10 favorite picks from Kerr’s gift guide.

EmRata Wore Sweatpants and Trendy Sneakers to Celebrate Pete Davidson’s Birthday

    [ad_1]

In the most inevitable news of the week (just watch this), it seems that Pete Davidson and Emily Ratajkowski might be dating, and we now basically have proof. Yesterday was Davidson’s 29th birthday, and last night, photographers captured him in front of EmRata’s apartment building to pick her up in a Mini Cooper. (Given the paparazzi situation, she ended up taking an Uber to meet him. Just setting the stage here.)

I’m sure both Davidson and Ratajkowski would’ve preferred the paparazzi not to be there waiting for them, but it did allow us a glimpse of her chill outfit for the possible date. It consisted of low-rise sweatpants, a crop top, a black cropped puffer, and trendy Asics Gel-Kayano 14 Sneakers. It was a very “hanging out with Pete Davidson on his birthday in Brooklyn” look if you ask me. Scroll to see it for yourself and shop the pieces needed to re-create it.

  • Juliana Canfield Has a Knack for Creating Fan-Favorite Characters

Juliana Canfield Has a Knack for Creating Fan-Favorite Characters

    [ad_1]

The 30-year-old found inspiration in podcasts too. Though Canfield admittedly isn’t much of a podcast girl, she found the stories from former New York detectives crucial in understanding the more sensitive aspects of the job. “I think a lot of detectives, especially if they worked in the force for a long time, have a very tough exterior shell,” she says. “I was quite surprised and moved at times hearing these often men, who were grown and had long careers, get emotional or hearing their voices break when they were talking about emotional moments because of their colleagues or because of a particularly troubling case.”

The character Janine is nothing if not loyal and determined, a lot like another of Canfield’s beloved on-screen counterparts—Jess Jordan, Kendall Roy’s right-hand woman in the Emmy-winning HBO series Succession. Canfield laughs when I bring up the comparisons but argues they have one major difference: their choice of footwear. “Jess won’t be caught dead in a flat shoe,” she says. “She wears a stiletto. She likes her feet to hurt a little bit, and she runs around on the tips of her toes. And Janine wears flat shoes that lace up, and she’s always ready to run. But not run away, like run after.”

The supporting role quickly became a breakout moment for Canfield, with Jess becoming somewhat of an anomaly among Succession fans. There is even an entire Ringer article dedicated to the character, asking the important questions about her all-consuming job. Does Jess have a chance to eat well-balanced meals? Does she hydrate? And why has she stayed by Kendall’s side all this time? The love for the tireless C-suite assistant is far from what Canfield expected going into the project, but she’s happy to be caught up in the wave. When I ask about what’s to come in season four, which returns next spring, she leaves me with this: “From what I’ve read and seen so far, it’s going to be a real doozy.”

  • Florence Pugh Bravely Wore the Pants I Wouldn’t Dare Wear to the Airport

Florence Pugh Bravely Wore the Pants I Wouldn’t Dare Wear to the Airport

    [ad_1]

I use the term “bravely” quite loosely here, but in the context of airport outfits, Florence Pugh’s is just that. In my personal opinion, airport outfits live and die by what pants you wear. Choose a pair that’s uncomfortable or annoying in the least and you may quickly have regrets while waiting in line at security. Pugh, who was photographed landing at LAX this week, wore pants that I’d wear in life, but certainly not to the airport.

So what made these pants an airport “no” for me? Nothing more than the fact that they’re white. While her trousers look quite comfortable to me, the fact that they’re so light in color pretty much guarantees that I’d get them dirty in an airport and on the plane. If you’re confident that you can avoid this fate, I’m impressed and I encourage you to wear a pair of light-colored pants, because Pugh does look incredibly chic. I, on the other hand, will be sticking to dark colors that’ll hide the inevitable coffee spills and scuff marks.

Read on to see Pugh’s brave (but also very stylish) airport outfit, and shop pants I’d wear to the airport instead.

  • What It Was Like to Design the Costumes for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

What It Was Like to Design the Costumes for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

    [ad_1]

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is finally out now for everyone to see, and it’s just as incredible as the first. The run time is two hours and 41 minutes, and the cast is massive. How do you begin on a project of this scale? How long did the entire process take for your department?

Looking at the end result of it feels like the enormity of this project. Going into it is enormity. We lost our hero, and many of us poured into our art form. We all wanted to honor Chadwick [Boseman]’s life and also present an incredibly elevated art form to the world.

When you think about the inspiration, the passion, the purpose, the intention, it doesn’t feel enormous anymore. You start to divide it and say, “Who will I include in this journey? Who gets the aesthetic? What outsourcing can I use?”

Everything starts from an enormous number of artists that come together with drawings. We sit together, and we talk about the story. All of these artists come together with illustrations.

We’re evaluating and talking about what we like, talking about what doesn’t work, talking about story. After we lost our dear Chadwick, kind of Ryan Coogler became our hero. We needed him and Joe Robert Cole to bring us a script.

One thing he was very clear about was going to honor Chadwick, and it was going to examine grief in many forms.

Once you decide you love something, it’s psychologically proven that you’ll see it everywhere. It’s called the frequency illusion (kind of), and yes, it’s real. Since I, like so many of my fellow editors, am fully smitten with point-toe, knee-high boots, I’m not surprised that the exact style has become practically unavoidable in my everyday life, whether I’m working on a story or walking around the city. But even with all that exposure, I’m convinced the most recent time I spotted a pair was my chicest sighting yet.

For an especially autumnal day in NYC, Emily Ratajkowski debuted the perfect fall outfit, which included a brown moto jacket worn over a black bodysuit and combined with a khaki-colored $40 Zara micro skort and knife-sharp knee-high boots. To accent the outfit, she added a vintage Dior Saddle Bag, Fendi sunglasses, and a wide belt.

Clearly, the universe is trying to tell me something, and it has everything to do with the 14 pairs of dangerously tempting point-toe, knee-high boots below. Scroll down to see EmRata’s look and shop them all.

With a baby-pink base and angular white tip, these nails matched Kim’s entire Barbiecore vibe flawlessly. Kim wore head-to-toe hot-pink Balenciaga, complete with a mini croc bag and rose-toned jewelry. Her makeup was kept neutral, and her hair was out of her face. Taylor Swift attended the Europe Music Awards in Germany over the weekend, and wow, she did not phone it in with her outfit for the occasion. Swift walked the red carpet and accepted multiple awards in the 2022 version of the naked dress trend: netted, crystal-embellished dresses. The trend was very recently worn by Emily Ratajkowski and Olivia Wilde, and Swift is just the latest in a string of high-profile celebrities to embrace the pretty, daring trend.

Swift’s dress was a custom David Koma creation, and featured a corset-bodysuit-esque bodice with a netted emerald skirt, and we’re pretty sure everyone’s jaws were dropped. You may recall that Swift also wore a crystal mini dress to the American VMAs a few months ago, which could also be considered a 2022-era “naked” dress. It just goes to show that she’s into the trend, just as many other celebs are.

  • Rihanna Just Wore Arguably the Most Controversial Skirt Style Of All

Rihanna Just Wore Arguably the Most Controversial Skirt Style Of All

    [ad_1]

Given how popular trends like naked dresses, visible thongs, and going, wellpantsless are these days, it’s growing more and more difficult to generate controversy when it comes to fashion. And yet, Rihanna just did exactly that by wearing the one trend I personally never thought would make a genuine comeback: High-low hemlines. Leave it to the Fenty founder, though, to make the throwback silhouette feel modern, and even more shocking, cool.

Out to celebrate A$AP Rocky’s whisky brand Mercer & Prince at The Fleur Room in Los Angeles, Rihanna paired a gloved, velvet bodysuit by Melitta Baumeister with a faux leather Rick Owens skirt fit with a high-low hemline and a train. With the daring duo, she added a Tom Ford for Gucci handbag, a Celine hoodie, and strappy heels that laced halfway up her legs. A far cry from the jewel-toned high-low dresses we wore to practically every high school dance in the early-2010s (or was that just me?), the look is singlehandedly paving the way for a comeback of the cut.

Even so, welcoming high-low hemlines back into our wardrobes after all this time won’t be easy. To ease back into the style, shop the more approachable asymmetric skirts below.

The Most Jaw-Dropping Baby2Baby Red Carpet Looks, Period

    [ad_1]

Though it’s rarely discussed on the same scale as other red-carpet events, the annual Baby2Baby Gala consistently supplies us with top-tier looks. And this year’s was no different. Held in West Hollywood on Saturday night, the 2022 Baby2Baby Gala brought together some of L.A.’s best-dressed moms (and more), from Olivia Wilde to Kylie Jenner, to help bring in necessary funds for the organization’s work, which involves providing children living in poverty with diapers, clothing, and other essentials. Altogether, an incredible $10 million was raised.

Given that this year’s honoree was Kim Kardashian, there was no way the night wouldn’t be full of fashion moments. To receive her Giving Tree Award and announce a $1 million donation to Baby2Baby, the SKIMS founder chose a Barbie pink, fitted Balenciaga dress with a long train (her specialty recently) from the brand’s spring/summer 2023 collection, pairing it with a matching mini bag from the brand as well as blade-like heels. Of course, she wasn’t the only one who didn’t come to play stylistically at the event. Keep scrolling to check out all of the best looks from this weekend’s gala.

Anne Hathaway’s Airport Outfit Includes the Pants Every Frequent Flyer Avoids

    [ad_1]

By now, everybody knows that jeans—especially rigid, non-stretch ones—are best kept in your carry-on when traveling as opposed to on your person. After all, sitting in tight jeans can be difficult enough without adding in a long plane ride. And yet, that didn’t stop Anne Hathaway from hopping on a flight to LAX last week in perhaps the stiffest possible style: cargo jeans.

For her trip back to Los Angeles, the Devil Wears Prada star (with the help of her stylist, Erin Walsh) paired a super-light-wash pair of cargo jeans from Isabel Marant with a lightweight pink sweater, a red blazer, and a patterned, silk scarf tied around her neck. With it, she added even more accessories that TSA no doubt made her take off, including black Bulgari sunglasses, a Gucci’s Attaché crossbody bag, and most impractical of all for a security line, a pair of white, knee-high boots.

Though ultimately a bit illogical for air travel, there’s no denying that Hathaway’s airport look was an even 10, no deductions. Shop it and more rigid jeans below.

Anna Wintour’s Airport Outfit Includes the Shoe Trend I’d Never Travel In

    [ad_1]

Anna Wintour is nothing if not consistent. Of course, you already know that she’s worn the same sunglasses and bob haircut for as long as she’s been EIC of Vogue—which is to say, a very long time. She also never wavers from her signature outfit formula: a printed midi or maxi dress with knee-high heeled boots. And as it turns out, this is true even when she’s traveling through JFK Airport in New York.

I’ve never worn heeled knee-high boots while traveling because I can imagine that taking them on and off at security would be quite a hassle—would the chic yet cumbersome shoes even fit properly in a bin? And you certainly won’t catch me wearing heels of any sort while traveling, as schlepping through airports is already an exhausting experience that would only be made worse by wearing anything remotely uncomfortable. Anna Wintour definitely looks just as chic as ever, but I personally would think twice before wearing her shoes at the airport. There are certain celebrities that I instantly associate with L.A., and one of them is Gwyneth Paltrow. Everything about her screams sophisticated Southern California, including her effortless-yet-chic wardrobe. Speaking of Los Angeles, it follows its own set of rules when it comes to fall and winter weather, and so do its residents when it comes to their fall and winter wardrobes.

Recently, L.A. resident Paltrow stepped out for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live in a Birkenstock outfit that made perfect sense for the oft-mild Los Angeles weather. It consisted of black Bermuda shorts, a red belted cardigan, and shiny black Birkenstock sandals. The combination proved to be the perfect fall-in-L.A. That was certainly the case during her latest outing at the Colham Manor Children’s Centre, which she paid a visit to on behalf of the Maternal Mental Health Alliance. For the occasion, the Princess of Wales wore an understated yet chic outfit comprised of a Hobbs London coat, a Mango dress, Kiki Mcdonough earrings, and Gianvito Rossi shoes, all in varying shades of forest green.

Kendall and Kylie Just Made the Case For This “Ugly” Shoe Trend Still Being Cool

    [ad_1]

Kendall and Kylie Jenner probably don’t always think alike, but when it comes to a certain shoe trend, they clearly do. And since this shoe trend was wildly popular last fall and winter (some might say that it peaked then), I thought you might be interested in its fate.

The shoe trend in question is chunky lug-sole shoes, which you probably own a pair or two of, given that practically every new shoe during the fall and winter of 2021 came with a lug sole. Brands both high-end to affordable all jumped on board with the chunky-shoe trend, and I, for one, have been wondering if it would stick around for another season. If you trust the fashion clout of Kylie and Kendall Jenner (which you honestly maybe should), the answer is yes, the trend is sticking around.

While in New York earlier this week, the Jenner sisters went to brunch wearing black, chunky-soled shoes. Kendall paired hers with flared pants while Kylie wore hers with puddle jeans. I find it to be good news that such influential celebrities are wearing last year’s biggest shoe trend, because who wants to invest in anything, only to find that it’s “out” a year later?

Like clockwork, North Face’s ultra-warm 1996 Nuptse puffer coat is back at the first sign of chilly weather, this time on Hailey Bieber. Sure, the weather is in the mid-60s in L.A., but that didn’t stop the model from breaking out her winter wardrobe, tossing on the iconic style with an ACNE Studios beanie, low-rise jeans, and every celebrity’s favorite Adidas sneakers, the Samba. Weather-appropriate or not, her debuting her Nuptse is a sign, or better yet, a warning (a warning to get your hands on one before every colorway and size sells out and spikes in price on the secondhand market, that is).

Don’t believe me? Just take a look at last year’s demand for the retro puffer. According to Lyst’s Q4 report from 2021, which takes into account conversion rates and sales from the shopping platform as well as Google search data, the 1996 Nuptse was the hottest product of the quarter for both men and women, ahead of fellow favorites like Ugg’s Classic Ultra Mini Boots and Birkenstock’s shearling Boston clogs. And now that Bieber’s worn hers for the first time, especially as early in the season as she did, the North Face jacket is in for an even bigger year—period.
