    For anyone who’s listening who might not have an encyclopedic knowledge of your career as I do, can you give a little bit of context to your origin story and how you first fell in love with makeup?

    I always had an interest growing up. I was born and raised in the Bronx, a child of Albanian immigrant parents from Montenegro. Super old-school, super old-fashioned.

    A super kind of also suppressed childhood, because I always knew I was slightly different and interested in things like beauty and supermodels and MTV and pop stars.

    I always kept that quiet and to myself. I always had an interest in beauty, because I remember also when I was young watching my oldest sister, Vicky, apply lipstick before she went to school or she teased her hair.

    I was always fascinated by the transformation aspect of that. There was something there that inspired me.

    After high school, I went to Manhattan to look for a job. I stumbled across Sephora—which was the Rockefeller Center Sephora—and it was three stories.

    Sephora was a new concept in the United States at the time. I remember walking in, and my mom was with me.

    She immediately took me through the revolving doors and spun me back outside. She’s like, “No, no. This is not for you this place.”

    I think she saw these guys that had makeup on, and she was like, “Oh, no, no, no.”

    Long story short, I eventually got hired. I wound up even calling the headquarters in France to ask why wasn’t being hired. So I had an interview, and I got the job.

    I used to stand by the door and hold baskets and say, “Welcome to Sephora. Welcome to Sephora.” All day.

    This woman asked me, there was this gondola full of hundreds of lipsticks, and she was overwhelmed. She asked me to help her choose a lipstick, and for a second, I was like, “Oh my god, what am I going to do?”

    Because I want to do it, but I’m not supposed to, because it’s not my job.

    I specifically remember the color. It was this reddish, almost Benetint-y kind of shade. I gave it to her, and she tried it on.

    She was just like, “Oh.” She goes, “I love this. Thank you so much.” That little experience, it was an epiphany.

    It somehow gave me this confidence that I had never felt before in my life.

    That’s it. This is what I want to do. This is my world. This is what I want to work toward.

    Reformation has done many exciting collaborations over the years, but I can’t say that I’ve ever been quite as thrilled about one as I was when I heard that they were partnering with New York City Ballet on a collection. The NYCB Collection is out today, and it’s every bit as good as I imagined it would be.

    Included among the 19 ballerina-inspired pieces are gauzy skirts, chic ballet flats, pretty bodysuits, and stunning dresses. The collection was photographed at Lincoln Center, NYCB’s home base, and includes actual dancers from the company among the models for the editorial shoot. Reformation says the capsule collection was designed for the “ballerina off-duty”. Specifically, it was inspired by the George Balanchin ballet Jewels, which is opening the company’s fall season.

    Being the hyper-organized person she is, what do you think draws her to someone like Steven, who feels a bit messy in life and his decisions?

    AH: [Me, Rebecca, and Peter Dinklage] had a lot of conversations about that, about what it is, and the fact that their beginning would have been really messy. Falling in love with a patient is a really big deal. I actually called a therapist I know to say, “Walk me through exactly how this would work,” because I sensed it was a big deal, and she talked me through exactly why it’s such a big deal. They just got hit by this really strong need to be together, and I think they honored it and respected each other so much. They were ultimately such a safe choice for each other, [in] that they were both suffocating.

    Peter and I had a lot of conversations about how do we have anti-chemistry, like in a way that brings the audience in. We don’t want to repel people with the anti-chemistry, but you have to be like, “Oh yeah—no, no, no.” Also not in a violent way. The way we usually think about people who shouldn’t be together is they’re miserable in these really toxic ways, and it’s like [Patricia and Steven] are not necessarily toxic. It’s not like that, but neither one is particularly thriving. 

    RM: They are functional as a couple. 

    AH: They are so functional. They are functional to the point of dysfunctional. 

    Can we talk about her faith and why she is so drawn to the Catholic church? 

    RM: I think that finally real faith is a bit of a mystery. I don’t think you can say, “I have faith because of this.” The way that I wrote her is that she has a father who is Jewish, her mother was Catholic, but she went to Catholic school. She’s a person with a big religious capacity, and some people are born like that. That was the religion that she finds herself more and more keenly drawn to. I don’t think there’s a logic to that, and that’s one of the things that undercuts her very logical secular life, is this other thing. It’s, in a funny way, this wild part of her, even though we don’t necessarily see religious faith as being that, but I think at its purest form it is. 

    AH: It’s funny. I was really lucky I got to go to the opening night of the opera in New York, and it was Dead Man Walking. I think we’re all familiar with the story, and in it, there’s an aria where the lead character is describing herself. She’s a nun, and she’s saying Jesus was a hothead, and so am I, and I just remember thinking, “Oh that’s funny. We don’t often think about it in those terms.” For Patricia, what Rebecca is saying is really interesting—that idea that she has these urges. She has these desires, and they are really out of step with what we understand to be a modern woman.

    Part of the reason that she is having a hard time opening up to them is because it doesn’t make sense to her. It doesn’t make any logical sense, and she doesn’t know what part of herself she has to deny in order to follow this path, but ultimately, it is a mystery. I think that there’s a very long, continuous streak of mystics in our species in our history, and she is one of them. 

    RM: It doesn’t match her life—it pulls her apart. 

    AH: She has such a mystical life, but it kind of bubbled up inside of her until she couldn’t repress it anymore.

    The film raises a lot of uncomfortable questions about sex and power. How were those two themes showcased in the wardrobe?

    With the Emily character, it was finding suits that just looked amazing on her, and throughout, we just wanted her to look really strong but then almost undoing the power of [the suits] with those slightly frilly blouses—blouses that are almost the color of lingerie [and] that have a sort of frail femininity to them. She is playing with that. She is using that femininity. Even though she’s got these shoulder pads and this little suit of armor, there is also this nod to her femininity, which I think women, especially in that world, do play with. I think that’s quite an interesting contrast. You have these super-sharp and super-slick and empowering suits, but then it’s then feminized with these really delicate silk blouses and little bits of lace and little bits of jewelry and heels you could probably only walk in for four hours. 

    Let’s talk a little more about Emily’s wardrobe. We see her go from being the underdog to a position of power in a very male-dominated world quite quickly. How did you want to show that evolution in her clothes?

    The script—and film really—only spans a couple of weeks. When we sat down and looked at the timeline of it, it was a really compact time, and one of the things that really struck me reading the script is there is no time for extracurriculars. There are a couple of times they go to a bar, but it’s still work. It’s still with colleagues and the boss. Sure, maybe they get home and are on Net-a-Porter buying, buying, buying after buying, buying, buying all day long, but in reality, where does she suddenly acquire these pieces from? Especially at that point where Luke undermines her appearance, it really throws her, and she’s scared now to wear a blouse. She’s scared now to have that femininity. So the black roll-neck comes out, but that feels wrong. There’s this kind of panic.

    I think one of my favorite outfits is the one she wears to the strip club. It was quite a brassy belt, bigger earrings. There is an air of confidence, the big cuff on the blouse. It’s just got a bit more swagger. And then the trouser suit—that fact she’s in trousers and not a skirt. For me, when you think about that progression, it’s like she has days when she’s feeling really great and days when Luke has just completely undermined her, and she has no confidence. It’s all so skin-deep and shallow. … Rather than just create this trajectory of “she goes from a cheap suit to a really expensive suit,” I wanted it to be like, “You are the same person inside, and we are going to try and bring a bit more power and confidence, but at the same time, that insecurity is still very much there.” Other than that very first scene at the wedding party when she’s in the dress and … a few other scenes in the flat where we see her in lingerie, it felt like there was no breathing space outside of that office, so I think it was more important to really keep her in that uniform. 

    What about Luke? Can you tell me about the sartorial story you were trying to tell with his workwear?

    With him, we fitted many suits. I think he ended up with 10 or 12 suits. There were definitely ones that were a really nice cut and looked really good, and then there were others that weren’t quite as flattering, just not a great cut on him. Interestingly, in a way, I played the reverse on him. Whereas we were trying to make [Emily] more badass as the film goes on, with [Luke], there was almost a decline that’s happening, so we were favoring the really good suits at the top of the movie and then the slightly less… None of them were unflattering, but there were some that were… less impressive. With color and the fabrics, there were some that were a bit softer [and] not as sharp and solid, that felt not as assertive on camera, so we were playing those at the other end of the movie.

    Gigi Hadid’s Paris Fashion Week wardrobe was one for the books, per usual. She’ll probably be the poster child of model-off-duty style for the 2020s when we look back. She’s always effortlessly cool and trendy (but not overly so) and expertly mixes high and low items regularly. But let’s discuss one outfit, in particular, that she wore between shows earlier this week in Paris.

    Hadid’s perfect fall look consisted of many trends, including a maxi skirt, ballet flats, crop top, baseball cap, and Prada’s Arqué Bag. But the thing that tied all the subtly trendy items together was her worn leather jacket that could’ve easily passed for vintage—alas, it was Mango. If you scroll through Mango’s current jacket offerings, you’ll spot many good ones, but the Oversized Worn-Effect Leather Jacket that Hadid went with really stands out. It’s a high-quality piece that’ll continue to look better with age. And while worn leather jackets are a trend right now, they’re never not cool. At $600 the jacket is more of a splurge than most of Mango’s inventory, but given the factors above, I think it’s worth it and that Gigi would agree.

I would never have thought to style leggings with a fancy top for a special occasion, but this Rihanna-fied way to wear them is wholly inspiring.

    What parts of writing this book came really easily, and then was there a part that you found difficult to write for any reason?

    Everyone wanted to talk and loved to talk about Camp Glossier, which was their annual employee off-site. It seemed like it was so much fun and wholesome. That was easy and a delight to talk about. Honestly, the hardest part was just Emily [Weiss] and our relationship and her ambivalence to the book. She felt, I believe, that she was a bit blindsided that the book was about Glossier, that her name was in the subtitle.

    I felt like I was being pretty open about the process over email and that they just weren’t really taking it seriously or paying a lot of attention. I think she felt more like I was being a little shady or duplicitous and tried to do a little of the “I thought we were friends” thing. That’s when I really had to be like, “We’re not friends. We don’t hang out socially.”

    I had to have this moment of standing up for myself in a way and saying, “I have a job, and it’s a writer, and it’s important, and I want to tell this very nuanced story that I think is rooted in feminism and power.” That was hard for me to say about myself. We’re in this environment where being a journalist is easy to be hated because of it.

    Also, I respected this woman so much. I’m not a sadist. Causing someone pain isn’t something that I’m particularly fond of. But also there were previous versions of the book that had probably too much hand-wringing about that and too much of my own inferiority complex. That was the hardest part. It was an emotional journey of acceptance for probably both of us.

    Princess Diana was certainly not the first person to wear bike shorts with an oversized sweatshirt, running shoes, and high socks, but she was definitely the most memorable celebrity to do so. When I saw Taylor Swift in a similar outfit combo in New York City today, it immediately reminded me of the late royal’s iconic style. 

    Photographed outside the Electric Lady Studios today, Swift wore a baggy Daydreamer tee with bike shorts, New Balance running shoes, a Louis Vuitton bag, and FP Movement ruffled socks. This also happens to be my preferred outfit for running errands, working out, or just lounging around my house.     Last week, YSL Beauty celebrated the launch of its new men’s fragrance, Myslf, in Paris during Paris Fashion Week. As you might imagine, it was a star-studded event—Austin Butler, Troye Sivan, and more attended. Everyone’s glam was out of this world, but we couldn’t help but focus on Nicola Peltz Beckham’s look. 

    Peltz Beckham arrived with a look reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour. She had a smoky cat eye, petal-pink lips, and semi-matte, radiant skin. Luckily, her look is incredibly easy to re-create.
