  • Oscars: Latvia Bets on Animation Again, but ‘Dog of God’ Is “on the Other End of the Spectrum” From ‘Flow’

Latvia made a splash at the 2025 Oscars by winning the best animated feature award for Flow. The small Baltic country’s submission for the 2026 best international feature film Oscar is, again, an animated movie. But Dog of God, from director brothers Lauris and Raitis Abele, is very, very different from Flow, including being a genre film and much more graphic and provocative.

While director and producer Gints ZilbalodisFlow told the dialogue-free story of a solitary cat’s emotional journey, Dog of God is set in the 17th century and focuses on a woman accused of witchcraft and how her trial uncovers the existence of a werewolf. Rooted in Latvian folklore, it explores such themes as tribalism, the role of power elites, religion, and dogmatic thinking and rhetoric. The result is a frenzied fever dream full of horror, sexual desire and myths.

The brothers co-wrote the script with Ivo Briedis and Harijs Grundmanis. The voice cast features Regnars Vaivars, Jurgis Spulenieks, Kristians Karelins, Einars Repse, Agate Krista and Armands Bergis. Producing the film were Raitis Abele for Tritone Studio and Kristele Pudane, with Giovanni Labadessa serving as a co-producer.

Media Move is handling global sales on Dog of God. ESC Films acquired the French rights for the film, Weird Wave took it for Greece, and Little Dream Pictures for Germany. For the U.S., Cartuna acquired the movie.

Dog of God was a strange and intense experience — even in the making, it often felt like we were chasing something wild and unknowable,” Lauris and Raitis Abele said in a statement ahead of the film’s world premiere at Tribeca.

The Abele brothers talked to THR about Dog of God, how they originally planned it as a live-action movie, and why they hope to provoke debate rather than being politically correct.

The film’s story is inspired by actual events that took place “60 kilometers from where we live,” Lauris tells THR. And the belief in witchcraft and related ideas is still widespread. “We’re a Christian country, but we’re quite pagan.”

The brothers’ unusual cinematic voice stems from their appreciation of things that surprise them. “We like weird cinema, surreal cinema,” Lauris explains. “There are new narratives which we could see emerging [more and more], because everything is so calculated and very commercialized these days. For commercial product, you can’t afford experiments or weird stuff.”

While Dog of God was initially planned as a live-action story, animation helped with the brothers’ interest in pushing the envelope.

After the brothers’ psychedelic first feature film, Troubled Minds (2021), about their experience with a bipolar artist friend, Raitis was asked to work with the team of the Latvian animators of Flow. “I was helping them out with our studio, and I was just in this environment of animation experiments,” he recalls. When the Dog of God script didn’t get the hoped-for reaction from the country’s film center and various people the creatives pitched it to, Raitis suggested the animation approach. But Lauris was against it.

But when an animator friend of theirs created some sketches, things changed. “Lauris said, ‘Oh, this is something that we would like to watch ourselves,’” Raitis tells THR. “So, we changed the script to go more fairy tale, because animation opens up more possibilities.”

The brothers are happy with that choice to this day. “Animation gave us freedom,” Lauris tells THR. “In an adult animation world, we can go to hell rather than filming with a blue screen or finding real caves. It gave us a lot of artistic freedom. There are not many boundaries. We could do pretty much anything.”

Or, as Raitis puts it: “What we say when we introduce the film is, ‘and now for something completely different.’”

    Dog of God

    Media Move

That also means that Dog of God is different from the Latvian animated hit Flow, even though some animators worked on both movies. “Our film is absolutely on the other end of the spectrum,” Raitis emphasizes. “And the reaction from the film center was also positive. They liked this film, and they liked that it’s different. If it were similar, but did not reach the same heights as Flow, that would be bad. It’s very hard to compete with somebody who got an Oscar. But we went in the opposite direction. Flow has opened doors for Latvian animation. But it’s also good for the Latvian Animation Association that we are showing different kinds of films.”

The brothers are particularly proud and happy that Dog of God has found audiences beyond genre festivals.

And that even though the film includes “pagan sexuality that is very pre-Freudian,” as Lauris says. “I guess that was the care everywhere around Europe [back in the day]. The Canterbury Tales, for example, or The Decameron. So this is kind of our naughty, pre-Christian, pagan stuff.”

Raitis shares that Latvian and Baltic folk songs were one of the inspirations for Dog of God. “We have 12 thick volumes of folk songs, and number six has naughty folk songs,” he tells THR. “In school, we were not allowed to read that.”

Despite its local inspirations and setting, core themes of the movie feel universal and current. The brothers say they like the idea of the audience wondering if some of the things that take place in Dog of God could be happening today. “Evil ideas and human flaws do not go in circles, but in spirals,” offers Lauris. “And these things and more can happen these days. They are kind of archetypes — from witch hunts and hypocrisy to human desires.” Is there a hero in the film? “We say, Oh, these days all the heroes are dead. So, we don’t have any good characters in this film.”

The werewolf character in Dog of God is based on the trickster archetype, Raitis explains, highlighting: “He’s neither bad nor good.”

The brothers often hear that viewers see their movie as criticizing the church. “No, it’s not criticizing the church,” Raitis says. “It’s a critique of dogmatic thinking, abuse of power and hypocrisy. That can come from a church, a government institution, a company or whatever.”

    Dog of God

What is next for the Abele brothers? They have already received funding for their next film, a live-action feature called Wagner and Satan. “We still want to be in this genre environment, because we fell in love with genre after going to the various festivals,” Raitis explains. “This audience feels very good to us, and we feel good to them.” The movie is based on a true story, “but of course, we are twisting it in all directions,” he adds.

Richard Wagner lived in Riga and worked as a conductor before he became a famous composer. “The fact is that when he left Riga, he decided he would become a composer and just change his life. So definitely, there was a Faustian pact that happened here in Riga,” argues Raitis. “And as we have all these pagan traditions, we are mixing that in. So, we put Wagner before he was Wagner in this world, where he makes a pact with the devil. It’s also based on one quote from Wagner that he was so close to composing music that would make the whole world go mad. And we believe that he stole some pagan manuscript from here with this music. And later, the whole world did go mad for a certain period of time.”

Concludes Lauris:” Even if it’s a genre film, as a young person, Wagner was kind of this anti-establishment person, and then when he gained some recognition, he became a monarchist. So it’s also a symbolic deal with the devil and explores when a revolutionary becomes establishment.”

  • Olivia Rodrigo and Madison Beer Both Wore This $12 Nail Polish to the Grammys

Olivia Rodrigo and Madison Beer Both Wore This $12 Nail Polish to the Grammys

Last night, the 66th annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles. While there were many notable beauty looks to discuss, including Taylor Swift’s Schiaparelli Couture dress and Miley Cyrus’s “golden goddess” makeup, we noticed something that would have otherwise slipped subtly under the radar. Two Gen Z celebs walked the pre-show red carpet with classic nude manicures that were created with the exact same drugstore nail polish, and it’s only $12. As far as red carpet beauty moments go, this one couldn’t be easier to re-create. Keep scrolling to see each celeb’s manicure and the nail polish used and learn the exact steps it takes to re-create it.

Yoko Sakakura is the celebrity nail artist who created Rodrigo’s manicure. “Tonight, we decided to switch it up from Olivia’s usual dark and edgy nails,” she said in a press release. “OPI has the prettiest classic shades, and we specifically chose two of my favorite natural tones to capture the same elegant aesthetic as her cream dress adorned in crystals.”. She used OPI’s salon-only gel nail polish, but lucky for us, we can re-create the look at home using the exact same shades of the brand’s traditional nail polish. In other words, we can get the look without a UV lamp. Sakakura started by prepping Rodrigo’s nails, and then she applied a base coat and cured it. For our purposes, we’ll use OPI’s Natural Nail Base Coat ($12). Then, it’s time for nail color.

First, she applied a thin coat of the brand’s iconic shade Put It in Neutral, which is a pink-beige.

Then, she applied a thin coat of another iconic shade, Bubble Bath, over top. (This is a classic sheer pink and a Who What Wear team favorite.) Sakakura finished off the simple yet effective combo with a layer of topcoat. Again, she used the salon-only gel version, but we’ll use OPI’s Top Coat ($12). It’s as easy as that.

Sreynin Peng is the celebrity nail artist who created Madison Beer’s manicure. “Keeping it very classic, we went with two popular OPI shades, Do You Take Lei Away? and Put It in Neutral, for Madison’s nail look,” she said in a press release. “Madison has amazing nails, so we kept the same almond shape that she regularly sports, which can really elevate any nail look. This combined with the layering of the shades offered a timeless nail that perfectly complemented Madison’s gown.” Again, OPI’s salon-only gel nail polish was used, but we can re-create the look with the same shades in traditional nail lacquer. Just as before, we’ll start by prepping our nails and using OPI’s Natural Nail Base Coat ($12) to set the foundation for color.

Once the base coat was dry, Peng applied a coat of this muted beige onto Beer’s almond-shaped nails.

Then, she added a layer of Put It in Neutral over the top. The final step was to apply a topcoat. Again, we’ll use OPI’s Top Coat ($12). That’s it—four easy steps to re-creating a red carpet manicure.

We love this elegant muted rose.

This soft brown is so pretty.

Essie’s Ballet Slippers is another drugstore icon.

Chanel has some of the best neutral nail polishes.

We love the glossy finish of this nail polish.

  • J.Lo Wore a Completely Sheer Top and Controversial Accessory for Her SNL Arrival

J.Lo Wore a Completely Sheer Top and Controversial Accessory for Her SNL Arrival

Jennifer Lopez had a busier weekend than most of us as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. Naturally, she was dressed to the nines for the weekend and everything leading up to it. “Mob wife” seemed to be the theme of the weekend for J.Lo, and her wardrobe for her time in New York was all about statement-making coats. It was what she wore under her coat for her arrival at the studio for the taping that undoubtedly turned heads. Underneath her dramatic sleeveless maxi coat, Lopez wore a completely sheer top over a nude Victoria’s Secret bra. Aside from the bra, the outfit was a full Valentino Haute Couture S/S 24 look.

Lopez is certainly no stranger to incorporating sheer pieces into her wardrobe. She’s been doing it effortlessly for decades, and her glamorous arrival at SNL was just the latest example. But she didn’t stop there. Lopez paired her sheer top with dramatic teal leather gloves that were long enough to act as sleeves. The gloves aren’t the easiest thing to pull off, but if anyone can, it’s her. Thank you for being you, J.Lo! No notes!

  • How Natalie Holloway Has Transformed the Fitness Industry With Bala

How Natalie Holloway Has Transformed the Fitness Industry With Bala

A few years ago, a new fitness brand entered the scene, completely innovating they way people worked out through its iconic piece of equipment, the Bala Bangle. Natalie Holloway is the co-founder and visionary behind Bala and has grown the business from the Bangle to a 360 lifestyle brand. As many successful businesses begin, Holloway founded Bala after noticing a need in the market. In fact, her life completely took a turn when she met her future husband and business partner, Max, when they were both working at global ad agency 72andSunny. Holloway began her career in advertising, where she worked with major clients such as Jeep and Starbucks, but once she and Max realized their mutual burnout, they decided to leave their jobs and embark on a yearlong travel adventure.

Throughout their travels, the couple brainstormed various business ideas, and their aha moment came during an unchallenging yoga class in Indonesia. They wondered why no one was creating stylish wrist or ankle weights to amp up workouts like these. With this idea in mind, they returned from their travels and set out to create the now-beloved Bala Bangle, using a successful Kickstarter campaign to launch their business.

  • 6 Scene-Stealing Performances to Have on Your Radar This Winter

6 Scene-Stealing Performances to Have on Your Radar This Winter

    WHO: Bebe Wood

WHAT: The movie musical Mean Girls

“That’s so fetch!” When we first heard Mean Girls, the Broadway musical version, would be adapted into a movie, we were excited to see what a 2024 version of one of our all-time favorite films would look like. That enthusiasm doubled when we heard who would be stepping into the high-heeled shoes of the Plastics. We stan Reneé Rapp, of course, but we also love a fresh face and couldn’t wait to see Avantika Vandanapu and Bebe Wood in action. Wood—whose previous credits include Hulu’s Love, Victor, Ryan Murphy’s The New Normal, and ABC’s The Real O’Neals—is so fun to watch as the catty but vulnerable Gretchen Weiners. Not only does she deliver on the laughs, but she also has a noteworthy musical number in “What’s Wrong With Me.” What’s more, she’s a fashion risk-taker and lover of all things vintage—a woman after our own heart.

My experience auditioning for Mean Girls was… Totally surreal! I grew up with Mean Girls. I truly can’t remember a world before it. In fact, did the world even exist before Mean Girls? It was such an honor to be considered for the part and totally insane and thrilling to actually be cast. It really is a dream come true.

I was excited to put my own spin on Gretchen Wieners by… The nature of my being me! Gretchen is such an iconic character that so many incredible actors have touched. It’s easy to overthink it! I tried my best not to fall into that trap and trust that, by virtue of my being a different performer, the performance will be different. At the same time, I think the essence of Gretchen will always be the same. Tina’s writing is so brilliant. Gretchen’s voice is so clear. Sometimes, as an actor, if you’re going out of your way to try and make a character different, you can actually stray from who said character really is in a way that will hinder you.

If I could go back to one day on set, it would be… The day we were shooting “I’d Rather Be Me” and a full-on blizzard broke out. That whole sequence was done in two very long takes. From the cafeteria to the outside area, we don’t stop. We had done it a few times, making it outside each time. The weather seemed perfectly fine! But then, we did it again, and when Janis (Auli‘i Cravalho) opened the door, it was fully snowing. We were all like “WTF?!” It was hysterical. We had to go home and film the rest another day. Aha ha!

The stories and/or characters that make me feel excited to work in this industry are… Stories about women with big minds, hearts, and ideas. I also feel excited about stories that thematically touch on the nuances of life and humanity, all the beautiful little things that lay within the in-between.

Outside of acting, some of my other passions include… Music and songwriting!! I am passionate about so much, but music feels more like my soul. I released my debut EP 21st Century Hippie back in 2021, but I’m excited to record some new stuff I’ve been working on. I also love art, history, poetry, nature, antiques, and my cat and puppy!

If you catch me off duty, chances are I’m wearing… Ooh! It depends on the season. In spring and summer, I love a white cotton number. Turn-of-the-century Edwardian underwear is really my 21st-century outerwear in the summer. In the winter, you can catch me in knitwear, my long black Max Mara coat, and a wide-leg pant. These seeded denim trousers from Carrier Company are my favorite. I also always wear little gold hoops.

When it comes to fashion, I’m a total sucker for… Vintage! Clothes tell stories. I like to think about who wore something before me. And it’s good for Mother Earth—yay sustainability!

My winter wardrobe would not be complete without these three pieces:

19 Epic Under-$250 Finds I Just Added to My Mytheresa Cart

While Mytheresa is a luxury retailer through and through (one of the best, I might add), not everything in its inventory is in the thousands—far from it. I check the new arrivals nearly daily and among the Loewe It bags and The Row and Alaïa shoes everyone want to get their hands on, I routinely find items for far less—great items, I might add.

Since I scroll through Mytheresa so often anyway, I thought I’d share my favorite wallet-friendly finds with you—with $250 being the limit. Among them are the perfect pair of earrings, designer socks, trend-forward accessories, chic basics, and swimwear for the season ahead—to name a few of my finds. Present and accounted for are Gucci, Toteme, and Jacquemus, among others.

In case you missed it, the 66th annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles last night. There were so many notable nominees, and Coco Jones was one of them. She was nominated for five Grammys, including Best New Artist, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Album. The singer-songwriter ended up winning Best R&B Performance for her song “ICU.”

Before her big win, Jones walked the red carpet wearing a Celia Kritharioti dress and a glowy, fresh-faced makeup look that made us stop and stare. You can imagine how delighted we were to learn that the entire look was created with drugstore products… all priced at $17 or less. Yep, it’s proof that “red carpet” and “affordable” aren’t always mutually exclusive.

Diana Shin was the celebrity makeup artist behind this look. “I created a bronze, glowy glam for Coco Jones at the Grammys using L’Oréal products,” she said in a press release. “I wanted to keep the makeup clean and beautiful to complement her glamorous dress.”  Ahead, see and shop all seven of the exact makeup products Shin used.

There were so many hair and makeup looks worth “oohing” and “ah-ing” about on the 66th annual Grammys red carpet, but if we had to choose one that stood out to us the most, it had to be Miley Cyrus’s. Sure, her Maison Margiela dress was stunning, but her big, brushed-back hair was the first thing we noticed (it gave us 80s Jane Fonda vibes in the best way). Then, we looked closer, and we saw her golden, glowing skin. That was what really made us stop and stare…and demand to know exactly which beauty products were used to achieve it.

Luckily, we got the deets. Makeup artist James Kaliardos was the expert behind the look. “I wanted her to glow like a golden goddess, a touchable beauty,” he said in a press release. “Miley and I collaborated on her skin today (and literally on everything) for her fresh-faced look! The end result is just gorgeous with perfected shapes and a tonal palette with golden goddess punctuations.” Keep scrolling to see the exact beauty products he used to create this look, from skin prep to makeup!

Mariah Carey Just Snuck Into the Grammys in a Hip-High-Slit Naked Dress

The red carpet at tonight’s Grammy Awards was nothing short of spectacular. You had Taylor Swift in Schiaparelli couture, Olivia Rodrigo in vintage Versace, and Dua Lipa in custom Courreges. But you know who we didn’t get to see on the red carpet? The one and only Mariah Carey. As the presenter of the very first award of the evening, Carey made the wise decision to skip the step-and-repeat and head straight backstage.

Presenting Miley Cyrus with her first-ever Grammy award, Carey wowed in a glittering Laura Basci gown with a slit cut up to her hips. As for Cyrus, she changed out of her safety-pin dress into a much more comfortable jumpsuit to accept her award. Scroll down to see all the photos.

Recently, the longtime Louis Vuitton ambassador wore one of our favorite winter staples—the camel coat—over chic LV separates to an appearance on Good Morning America in NYC. Primed for the frigid winter weather, Stone’s wool coat and suede boots added both warmth and tonal variety to her otherwise simple button-down shirt and midi skirt.

Dua Lipa Wore the Ideal Jeans-and-Flats Outfit for a Day Date With Callum Turner

Dua Lipa is a fashion fixture on the Grammys red carpet every single year, and I have no doubt that she’ll bring her A game for the awards this Sunday. I’m waiting with bated breath to see what she’ll choose to wear, but in the meantime, let’s chat a bit about her off-duty style because it’s also worth noting.

Photographed in Los Angeles with Masters of the Air star Callum Turner, Lipa wore the ideal jeans-and-flats outfit for a daytime date. Specifically, she wore a black-and-white Chanel tank top, Celine jeans, a Bottega Veneta Gemelli Medium Bag ($4100), and Alaïa Mesh and Patent-Leather Ballet Flats ($1024). That’s certainly a lot of luxury brands, but the overall look is something you can easily re-create on a non-designer budget. Now that Sofia Richie has announced her pregnancy to the world, we have her maternity outfits to look forward to. She’s already treated us to several looks this week, including her first red carpet appearance since announcing. Richie walked the red carpet with her husband Elliot Grainge for a pre-Grammys event in L.A., and as to be expected, her look was wildly chic.

Richie wore a black off-the-shoulder blazer and trousers paired with black slingback heels. What really made the ensemble were her earrings, which were right in step with one of the biggest jewelry trends of the upcoming season. Hello, ’80s-inspired earrings—goodbye, delicate and dainty earrings. Richie’s oversize square earrings were reminiscent of the glamorous, statement-making earrings of the decade. Copenhagen Fashion Week Brands Are Prioritizing These 5 Trends for Fall 2024

You’d typically find me galivanting around Copenhagen this time of year. However, as I write this, I’m snuggled up in bed in Los Angeles instead of attending the Danish capital city’s fashion week. Talk about FOMO. However, I’ve been studiously following along from afar, taking notes on all the recurring themes on the runways. (And already planning my outfits for next season!)

For starters, a quartet of brands were on the same page when it came to the best denim trend of the season. Whether you’re a Formula One fan or somehow only realized today that you follow a lot of drivers on social media, then you’ve probably already seen some of the thousands of graphics and memes about Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave his team of 11 years in Mercedes at the end of 2024 and join Scuderia Ferrari, F1’s most successful team and the one with the scarlet-red car.

Suffice it to say, there have been tears—both happy ones and not-so-happy ones—on all sides of the move, which was announced on Thursday. Hamilton’s fans are nothing if not loyal and aplenty—the driver, fashion designer, musician, and more has amassed over 35 million Instagram followers. Come 2025, Ferrari should expect a massive influx of fans, all of whom will be expected to wear the team’s iconic color. • The 14 Most Iconic Versace Looks in Grammys History

The 14 Most Iconic Versace Looks in Grammys History

The countdown is on. The 66th annual Grammy Awards will be held on Sunday, February 4. In anticipation of the sure-to-be-amazing looks, I decided to take a walk down memory lane and revisit iconic outfits by one of the event’s most dominant red carpet designers: Versace.

You probably don’t need reminding, but Jennifer Lopez‘s cut-down-to-there Versace dress went hugely viral in 2000—before going viral was even a thing. In 2021, Doja Cat wore her own version of the dress, donning a belly-button-exposing plunging gown festooned with feathers. Scroll down to see my favorite Versace looks in Grammys history, including those of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Nicki Minaj, Paris Hilton, and more.

  • These Are the 2024 Trends I Think Princess Kate Would Adore

These Are the 2024 Trends I Think Princess Kate Would Adore

Princess Kate Middleton is one of the biggest trendsetters regarding royal fashion on the global stage, ushering in concepts like slideshow dressing, colorful outerwear, and even rewearing favorite pieces with updated hemlines and accessories. As a royal family member, her fashion sense tends to be more conservative than flashy, but that doesn’t mean the princess is above trying out a few of the more eye-catching trends of 2024

Middleton has already dabbled in several of this year’s most visible trends, from semi-sheer fabrics to coquette embellishments like rosettes and bows. Of course, as an alumnus of St Andrews, she has the prep-school trend down to a science and is never one to shy away from a radiant red accent

Given the recent news that the princess will be abstaining from public appearances while she recovers from a recent surgical procedure, we thought it might be fun to pull some fun, on-trend pieces that might pique her interest come spring. Please join us in sending our good wishes, and keep scrolling to check out the five trends we think Princess Kate will embrace throughout the rest of the year.

  • 25 Years Later, This Is Still Copenhagen’s Most Influential Fashion Brand

25 Years Later, This Is Still Copenhagen’s Most Influential Fashion Brand

Copenhagen Fashion Week is always an exciting time of year, but this season is extra special for one of the event’s stalwarts: Baum und Pferdgarten, which is celebrating its milestone 25th anniversary. To revisit the last two and a half decades and find out what’s coming next, I went straight to the source and interviewed Creative Directors Helle Hestehave and Rikke Baumgarten.

“We started in Helle’s bedroom, and lucky for us, we have since moved on,” Baumgarten told Who What Wear. “When we started the company, everything was still very manual. No Instagram or TikTok, only fax and phone. We did [it] all by hand opposite today, where patterns and prints are made digitally. The industry has changed radically and moves so much faster with so many strong brands. Today, having a strong brand DNA is equally as important as having strong collections.” Scroll down to read my full interview with the design duo.
