Florida groups call on state to apply for 2025 summer kids food program

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. – Groups across Florida are hoping the state will apply for next year’s summer federal food assistance program ahead of the upcoming deadline.

The program, known as SUN Bucks provides eligible families $120 per child for food during summer break.

Deputy Under Secretary for the United States Department of Agriculture, Cindy Long, said they are big believers in SUN Bucks.

“It provides the families of children with free or reduced prices, eligible students with a grocery card with benefits that they can use at the store to buy food help make up for those meals their kids aren’t receiving at school,” Long said.

For 2024, 35 states, all five U.S. territories and four tribes opted into the Summer EBT Program.

Florida is one of 14 states that chose not to participate in 2024.

News 6 reached out to ask why Florida did not apply for the 2024 year. The Florida Department of Children and Families sent a response which said:

“As a state, we are dedicated to making sure children have access to nutritious meals. This takes a whole of government approach that includes free and reduced lunch programs at school, providing SNAP benefits to families who qualify, and through summer break spot programs administered by FDACS. Over the past ten years, these programs have been remarkably successful. We anticipate that our state’s full approach to serving children will continue to be successful this year without any additional federal programs that inherently always come with some federal strings attached.”

Florida Department of Children and Families

The deadline is approaching to apply for the program in 2025 and organizations across the state are calling on Governor Ron DeSantis and state legislatures to do so.

“This program’s a real game changer when it comes to having all the tools in the toolbox for tackling child hunger over the really important summer months,” said Director of No Kid Hungry Florida, Sky Beard. “We had at No Kid Hungry as well as other partners a number of conversations with the folks in the Governor’s office, with House and Senate staff, and I have to say all of those conversations have been very promising.”

[RELATED: Here’s a round-up of free and reduced meals being offered at Central Florida school districts]

According to No Kid Hungry Florida, the program would benefit an estimated 2,158,000 eligible kids.

The benefits of the program are covered 100% by the USDA. But, Florida would need to split the cost of the administrative side of the program with the federal government. No Kid Hungry said it would cost the state an estimated $12.5 million for the administrative costs.

No Kid Hungry is one of several organizations in Florida that supports the SUN Bucks program.

The Audubon Park Covenant Church signed its name at the bottom of the letter of support for the program sent to state leaders back in May.

Pastor Sarah Robinson said it was heartbreaking when the state did not apply for the program for 2024.

“We know on the ground that the demand is so much higher than it has been for food banks and for families who just need to make ends meet,” Robinson said.

Robinson said the extra money would help families during the summer.

“That can be just that little extra that helps make sure they can make it to the end of the month and provide you know young kids, growing minds, growing bodies, futures you people to fill these important jobs and roles, to make sure they have what they need to keep growing healthy,” Robinson said.

According to the USDA, the state would have to send a preliminary plan of operation by August 15.

However, Long said that plan does not have to be perfect, and they would be able to work with any state to help them get to a finalized plan.

“It really serves as much as an indication of intent to operate the program and kicks off that process of us working,” Long said.

News 6 reached out to officials to see if Florida plans on applying for the 2025 benefits, so far we have not heard back.

  • Where to get your fill on National Food Truck Day

Where to get your fill on National Food Truck Day

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. – Friday is National Food Truck Day, encouraging foodies to get out there and support our local mobile eateries.

It can be pricey, sure. It could be blustery outside, that’s fine. It can mean having to eat a Canadian-Hawaiian fusion poutine pineapple burger while standing upright in a parking lot, we know this. But street food is street food and its charms keep bringing us back for more.

For the holiday, food truck networking agency Roaming Hunger has taken a lead of sorts by establishing FoodTruckDay.org, with links you can follow to find trucks registered with them in your area. Orlando-area food trucks are listed for example, but it’s worth noting that Roaming Hunger serves mostly as a catering middleman; to find food trucks near you, it’s worth visiting a StreetFoodFinder website such as OrlFoodTrucks.com, which does its best to provide an updated map of individual trucks.

There are also several food truck events happening Friday, so you’re still in luck if you’re more of a social food truck customer.

The “Ivanhoe Village Parking Lot Party” at Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company starts at 6:30 p.m. while Food Trucks Heaven says it’ll set up at Main Gate Flea Market — 5403 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway in Kissimmee — for a National Food Truck Day celebration that lasts until 11:30 p.m.

World Food Trucks, right up the road at 5811 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway, is open each day and allows its dozens of food trucks to set their own hours. Florida Foodie visited World Food Trucks in 2022, getting a taste of what president and CEO Nadeem Battla described as “a little mini United Nations” of vendors to choose from.

“We’ve got Mexican, we’ve got Venezuelan, we have Arab (…) I love the fact that we have countries from all over the world represented here,” Battla said. “The same way that people helped my parents to grow, now I get to help that next generation of immigrants to grow and create their American dream story.”

Owners of Orlando’s Kaya headed to Chicago for James Beard Awards

    [ad_1]

ORLANDO, Fla. – The owners and staff of the Filipino, fine-dining restaurant Kaya are heading to Chicago, hoping to bring home the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant.

Kaya is among the nine finalists from across the country up for the prestigious award from the James Beard Foundation.

“It’s surreal, unbelievable! Really, it’s an honor to have such a nomination, especially from James Beard,” Chef Lordfer “Lo” Lalicon, the co-owner of Kaya, said.

[ADD YOUR BUSINESS TO THE FLORIDA FOODIE DIRECTORY]

Kaya first opened in early 2023, bringing a mix of “casual fine dining” and traditional Filipino foods to Orlando’s culinary scene.

The name Kaya means “capable,” which has become a mantra for the “small restaurant.”

“It’s like saying, since we were one of the few Filipino restaurants in Central Florida, we’re saying that Filipino food is good enough. It’s flavorful enough. We can live our dreams and do what we want to do,” Lalicon said on the Florida Foodie podcast.

Lalicon said he and about 39 members of his team will be heading to Chicago for the award ceremony on Monday night.

The James Beard Foundation is a nonprofit aimed “to celebrate, support, and elevate the people behind America’s food culture and champion a standard of good food anchored in talent, equity, and sustainability,” according to its website.

The annual awards have become an icon of recognition among the culinary community, similar to the coveted Michelin Star.

Kaya has already been recognized by the Michelin Guide, which awarded the restaurant a “Green Star” which recognizes both a restaurant’s quality and its commitment to sustainability.

  • Central Florida restroom gets national recognition. Here’s what it looks like

Central Florida restroom gets national recognition. Here’s what it looks like

    [ad_1]

MELBOURNE, Fla. – Cintas — a restroom products supplier in the U.S. — has released its annual “America’s Best Restroom Award” for 2023.

Each year, Cintas announces which restrooms in the country are considered the “best” based on a public vote on Cintas’ website.

In 2023, the award went to the Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in Maryland, though there were nine runners-up for the year — including one restaurant in Central Florida.

That restaurant was Hell ‘n Blazes Brewing Company in Melbourne, which offers American dining and a “rustic” brewing taproom.

According to the restaurant’s website, the building at 1002 E. New Haven Ave. is over 120 years old, having been used as a hardware store, bank and mortuary before being sold to the mayor.

It would later go through a few more transformations before being taken over by owner Don DiFrisco and his family, who turned it into a craft brewery over the course of one year.

Now, the restaurant sports a huge game room, complete with flat-screen TVs, darts and table football, the website notes.

But the reason the restaurant earned a runner-up spot on Cintas’ list is thanks to its women’s restroom.

In previous years, other Florida locations have also achieved recognition by Cintas. Tampa International Airport’s Airside C restroom won the award for 2022, and the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge in Sanibel took the top spot in 2018.

Meanwhile, the following Florida locations have also been runner ups in previous years.

    Restroom Location Year
Tori Tori – Izakaya Restaurant Orlando 2022
    Cibo Wine Bar Miami 2015
Mai-Kai Restaurant and Polynesian Show Ft. Lauderdale 2014

  • Iconic New Smyrna Beach restaurant likely a total loss after overnight fire

Iconic New Smyrna Beach restaurant likely a total loss after overnight fire

    [ad_1]

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – A fire broke out early Monday at a popular New Smyrna Beach restaurant.

The fire started just after 1 a.m. Monday at Pappas Drive-In on North Dixie Freeway. Crews say the fire was in the attic area towards the back of the building when they arrived. New Smyrna Beach’s fire chief says it took six engines and 25 crew members to get the fire under control, and hours to knock it down.

“These older buildings are stubborn, heavier timber, heavier conventional lumber layers of roofing material, they are really stubborn to put out,” Fire Chief Shawn Vandermark said. “We’ve been here 8 hours and you can see there’s still spots we’re having to go back and put out just to get them totally extinguished.”

    No injuries were reported.

Firefighters with the New Smyrna Beach Fire Department are investigating what caused the fire, but the building is likely a total loss.

Pappas Drive-In opened in 1970 and is known for its famous burgers and fried chicken.

“It was a great place to be and we’re gonna miss not being able to go to it,” said customer Betty Dysterhouse. “And I feel for the owners and all the workers because they worked their buns off and really tried to make people happy.”

Customer Mary Timmerman says she hopes the owners are able to rebuild.

“I am very sad about this, we were just here for breakfast a couple days ago with our granddaughter and it’s just hard to believe and sad,” Timmerman said.

The restaurant also made headlines earlier this year when it was announced that superstar Brad Pitt filmed part of his movie about Formula 1 racing at Pappas.

The movie is scheduled to be released in 2025.

A GoFundMe for the restaurant was set up to help the 35 employees — some of whom have worked for the restaurant for decades — as they deal with the aftermath of the fire.

  • Ocala chef featured on Food Network plans massive expansion amid success of first restaurant

Ocala chef featured on Food Network plans massive expansion amid success of first restaurant

    [ad_1]

OCALA, Fla. – Rashad Jones opened his first restaurant last year in Ocala — Big Lee’s – Serious About BBQ — and he already has ambitious plans to expand across the country.

Big Lee’s is at 2611 SW 19th Avenue and serves meats such as brisket, pulled pork, ribs and burnt ends fresh from the pit. It also serves sides such as fries, coleslaw and fried okra.

Jones took to his brand’s Facebook page and website last month to announce he was franchising. The initial investment to open a location will be roughly $350,000.

[EXCLUSIVE: Become a News 6 Insider (it’s FREE) | PINIT! Share your photos]

Big Lee’s was founded in 2014 by Rashad Jones and his wife, Patrice Jones. The man behind the name of the restaurant is Patrice’s uncle, who helped show Rashad the way around the smoker.

“Uncle Leon was my source of inspiration to start cooking BBQ after I had his BBQ for the first time on November 24th of 2011,” Rashad Jones said in a statement to News 6. “He never taught me how to cook BBQ though. I’m 100% self taught. He gave me the spark, I fanned that spark into a flame and now that flame has become an inferno of passion for BBQ, hospitality and serving our community.”

According to Rashad, Big Lee’s started out with one food trailer, later adding four food trucks from 2018 to 2022 before his Ocala restaurant opened July 4, 2023.

His journey continued as he was featured on “Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives” and won two competition shows. He was even named the “Master of ‘Cue” when he won the “BBQ Brawl” in 2022.

“The key is to stay incredibly persistent when it comes to pursuing your dreams. Don’t quit, never give up and you can live your dreams and turn them into realities,” he said in a Facebook post.
