On Sept. 5, the “Oppenheimer” star stepped out in a sheer bridal-white gown for the Elle Style Awards in London, where she was honored with the British icon award. Her halter-neck Alexander McQueen dress scooped low in the back and was covered in delicate floral appliqué cascading all the way down into a scalloped train. Pugh went braless beneath the see-through dress, giving us flashbacks to the fuchsia nipple-baring gown she wore to the Valentino haute couture runway show last summer.

    Assisted by stylist Rebecca Corbin-Murray, Pugh finished the look with white heeled sandals, pearl earrings and silver rings by Tiffany & Co., blue nail polish, and a spiky blond hairstyle.

    Just last week, Pugh spoke about her aforementioned sheer dress moment in an interview with Elle UK, revisiting the controversy it stirred up. “When everything went down with the Valentino pink dress a year ago, my nipples were on display through a piece of fabric, and it really wound people up,” she said. “Unfortunately, we’ve become so terrified of the human body that we can’t even look at my two little cute nipples behind fabric in a way that isn’t sexual. We need to keep reminding everybody that there is more than one reason for women’s bodies [to exist].”

    Despite the cruel body-shaming comments she’s received, Pugh continues to wear what she pleases on the red carpet and beyond. In the past year alone, the actor has made appearances in a plunging cutout Valentino gown, a sheer neon catsuit with a boob-window cutout, and a side-boob-baring polo dress. She also took the “underwear as outerwear” trend for a spin in a thong-exposing skirt at London Fashion Week and showed off her legs in tiny micro shorts at the Oscars. She’s truly left no daring trend untouched in 2023, and we love her for it.

    On the next slide, she continued her homage to the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives host, though she couldn’t help letting her affinity for goofy puns shine.

    “Just saying, could be the new mayor of flavour town,” she captioned another shot of her spiky ‘do, accessorized with some admittedly Fieri-esque black-and-gold cateye sunglasses. “Or should I say…’Flo’ver town.”

    Pugh recently shared that she shaved her head as a way to control her image, saying, “Vanity is gone.” In its place? Maybe Fieri’s signature condiment, Donkey Sauce. There is no beauty standard, only Donkey Sauce.

    With the confidence of an incumbent who has successfully lobbied every power player in Flavortown and knows he has the next mayoral election on lock, Fieri himself shared his young doppelganger’s image on his own Instagram story Friday, captioning it, “You’re crushin’ it.”

    In a recent interview with GQ, Cillian Murphy spoke about the Oppenheimer script being incredibly dense, to the point where the actor made an exception by reading his lines before he got to the set. 

    Murphy said, “You have to be completely prepared. I knew the script more or less before we went into work, which isn’t so not something I’ve ever done before. Only in theatre, because there was so much text, and it was quite dense. I wanted to not be worried about the text when I went on the floor.”

    One respite the Inception actor had was working with Robert Downey Jr. He explained, “But then, a lot of the scenes I have with Downey, it was quite loose and quite improvisational.”

    Murphy heaped praise on the Iron Man actor, calling his talent extraordinary. He said, “I mean, acting with him was just extraordinary. He’s just electrifying, the most available engaged, present, unpredictably brilliant actor I’ve ever worked with.”

    Cillian Murphy’s views on Oppenheimer

    During the interview, Murphy was asked if he is “able to judge him [Oppenheimer] just a little bit?” In his response, the actor diplomatically said, “I’m really not going to give you an opinion on that. I really strongly believe that the film should ask the questions of the audience.”

    He explained that his motive is not to “prejudice anybody’s point of view, when they go into the movie theatre, about what how they feel and Oppenheimer.”

    Although, the actor did reveal Christopher Nolan’s view of the man the world came to know as the father of the atomic bomb. Murphy shared, “What I will say, is that Oppenheimer – Chris called him the most important man that ever lived, whatever you think about that. That’s up to you. But we are living in a world that was changed by Oppenheimer. We’re living in a nuclear age because of what Oppenheimer did.”

    Meanwhile, Oppenheimer has been racking in amazing box-office numbers since its release on July 21. With its controversies and praises, Nolan has added another blockbuster to his list of iconic movies.

    Blow Up the Patriarchy, Or: The Barbenheimer Experience

    Perhaps what they don’t warn you about with regard to “the Barbenheimer experience” is just how jarring it actually is. Certainly, that’s the entire “point” of pairing these two films together, the reason the internet has gone apeshit: because they’re so “divergent.” In fact, the phenomenon has proven to be such an excitement to people that they’ve gone “through the archives” to find similar instances of unlikely movie pairings released the same week. Such examples include Jumanji and Heat, The Matrix and 10 Things I Hate About You and The Dark Knight and Mamma Mia! It’s really only the latter example (complete with also featuring a Christopher Nolan movie) that comes vaguely close to capturing the sort of genre/color palette dichotomy that Barbie and Oppenheimer do. But, on a deeper level than that, watching Oppenheimer the same day or week serves as an even more blatant method for underscoring the horrifying patriarchal system that Barbie does. 

    In Oppenheimer’s case, of course, it’s unintentional. Because never was patriarchy in America at its strongest and most accepted than in the mid-twentieth century. Nor could Nolan have planned for a movie about garden-variety male toxicity to have coincided so seamlessly with an actual moviegoing trend/phenomenon. The pairing of these two films fundamentally speaking to how patriarchy destroys lives in far more literal ways than figurative ones. While Barbie (Margot Robbie) at least gets to experience life as it should be under matriarchy in Barbie Land, maybe it’s almost worse to know what that sense of peace and freedom is like only to be forced to enter Real World territory, where males rule with an iron/button-pushing (a bomb allusion) fist. 

    Upon seeing how things are done in Real World, Ken (Ryan Gosling) decides he can no longer be subjected to the “tyranny” of matriarchal dominance. Of being unable to force a Barbie to do anything he wants them to (i.e., return his affection), least of all the specific one he’s pining over. Because, in Barbie Land, men a.k.a. Kens are just background. In J. Robert Oppenheimer’s (Cillian Murphy) world, it’s women who are very much peripheral, serving only as vague sexual impressions. Yet there’s never any issue with making a woman “his.” Except his on-again, off-again paramour, Jean Tatlock (Florence Pugh). Unfortunately for Oppenheimer, she’s the type of “Berkeley free spirit” who can never seem to be pinned down. Oppenheimer’s eventual wife, Katherine (Emily Blunt), on the other hand, is only too eager to take a fourth husband in “Oppi.” 

    And yet, for as important as these women are in Oppenheimer’s life (not to mention being the only sign of women anywhere within this filmic landscape), they’re really just cursory and occasional “presences” that only interrupt the “real” work he’s doing. The truly “significant” aspect of his life. Which becomes helping male politicians destroy the world in the name of war. With Oppenheimer himself growing (like a mushroom cloud) so consumed and titillated by the resources (financial or otherwise) the government provides him with in the name of scientific research, he loses sight of the monster he’s actually creating. Perhaps as Ruth Handler (Rhea Perlaman) once did as well. Not knowing that the woman she unleashed onto the world—the one quite literally made to show girls that they could be anything—only served to further highlight all the things they would never be, both body-wise and career-wise. Therefore, Handler ended up actually accenting a more palpable and depressing divide between reality and what should be…as opposed to conjuring a beacon of hope and feminism in Barbie. And yes, it bears noting that, despite all her evolutions, Mattel has never seen fit to release a “Body Positivity” Barbie. Maybe because they know just how hollow that would come across at this juncture. Though false intentions never stopped a capitalist from trying to make a fast buck. In short, to capitalize

    Obviously, Handler and Oppenheimer are by no means comparable for what they created—though each one did offer up, in some sense, a kind of Frankenstein. Gerwig appears to know that only too well by making Handler a prominent character in Barbie. A conceit that might seem a bit out of left field to some, but is actually entirely appropriate considering she was the brainchild behind Mattel’s best-selling and most iconic toy. And it’s cruelly ironic that Handler’s “ghost” should be left to haunt the seventeenth floor of corporate headquarters while the suits with no insight into women benefit from her invention. For yes, she was eventually forced to resign from Mattel in 1974 after the taxman cracked down on her for false financial reporting (something Gerwig refers to with a joke that Ruth herself makes in the movie).

    Difficulty getting along with the government appears to be a common characteristic in those who simply want to create. For Oppenheimer, too, was viewed with malice and contempt by the very political machine that was dependent upon him for developing an atomic weapon. One that turned out, in the end, to be rather needless as Japan would have surely surrendered without it. But such is the nature of patriarchy, with every man “in charge” needing to prove that his power is authoritative and incontrovertible by swinging his dick around while lives hang in the balance. 

    Oppenheimer makes that disgustingly clear when Henry L. Stimson (James Remar), the Secretary of War at the time, decides they shouldn’t bomb Kyoto because he and his wife honeymooned there and it’s a “lovely” place that has cultural value not just to him, but the Japanese. In other words, fuck those arbitrary shitholes, Hiroshima and Nagasaki. To see a scene like this play out is indicative of just how damaging patriarchy is, for it is a system run by a gender that thrives on violence, ego and heartless decision-making. A gender that proves, ultimately, gender is no illusion; for this particular one feeds on destruction, whereas the female one is founded metaphorically and literally on creation. The great yin and yang endeavors of each type of being. 

    So yes, more than merely a means to appreciate the contrasting cinematography styles of Hoyte van Hoytema and Rodrigo Prieto, the Barbenheimer experience does feel somehow essential. Like it shouldn’t get reduced to being categorized as “frivolous pandering to internet tastemaking,” but rather, seen as a brutal and unique way to watch how patriarchy upends male and female lives alike on a daily basis. All because someone wanted to prove he has clout and “intelligence.” Though the dumbest thing of all is to assume that one has any significance whatsoever in the grand scheme. 

    Especially a grand scheme that might now invariably include going “kabluey” because a man wanted to show off the prowess of his mind knowing full well that said result would be used for evil. Indeed, quoting from a Hindu scripture, Oppenheimer would say of his creation, “Now I am become Death, destroyer of worlds.” In some sense, Barbie destroyed worlds as well. Bringing “fire” to the “cavewomen” who were still stuck playing with (read: playing at mothering) baby dolls throughout their childhood. Accordingly, this is the very scene Greta Gerwig rightly chooses to commence Barbie with. And would that playing with/learning to emulate a “slutty” doll was the most affronting and harmful thing a man (/man-boy) ever did.

    The WGA writers’ strike is still going, and at this point, it’s beginning to affect the start of many different Hollywood productions. At Marvel, it already caused a delay in the shooting of Blade, and now a similar pause has been placed on Thunderbolts.

    The writers active in the strike are demanding better pay, better working conditions, and protections from being replaced or having their roles reduced by A.I. writing tools like ChatGPT, among others. As of this writing, their demands haven’t been met and the strike shows no sign of slowing down.

    Thunderbolts is set to star Sebastian Stan as Winter Soldier, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh as Black Widow, David Harbour as Red Guardian, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster. It follows a team of reformed villains who team up to work for the government. The film has been in the works since at least 2022. Eric Pearson was originally brought in to write the initial screenplay, but Lee Sung Jin joined the effort back in March of 2023. But thanks to the writers’ strike, no additional work can currently be done on the script.

    This isn’t just a Marvel problem either. Of course, the strike spans the whole industry, including Marvel’s competitors at DC. In fact, during a commencement speech at a university in Boston, chants broke out as Warner Bros. Discovery head David Zaslav was speaking. A whole room of students joined in, shouting “Pay your writers!”

    It’s unlikely this whole thing will get solved any time soon, but we’d love to be mistaken about that. Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to open in theaters on July 26, 2024.

    Florence Pugh has recently been the subject of much media buzz thanks to the age gap between her and her partner, Zach Braff.

    Pugh, who is 24-years-old, has been dating Scrubs star Zach Braff, who just turned 45, for nearly four years. As Pugh’s star has risen thanks to hit films like Little Women and Midsommar, media and fans alike have begun to question Braff and Pugh’s age gap. Finally, tired of all the abuse, Pugh posted the following video to her Instagram account on April 9th. Watch the video here.

    In the video, she firmly warns fans against commenting about her relationship on her posts. “I will not allow that behaviour on my page. I’m not about that. It makes me upset and sad that during this time when we really all need to be together and supporting and loving one another… a few of you decided to bully for no reason,” the star said candidly. She goes on to say that she has been working and earning money since the age of 17 and paying taxes from the age of 18 and can make her own decisions when it comes to relationships.

    “I’ll underline this fact,’ Pugh said. “I do not need you to tell me who I should and should not love and I would never in my life who they can and cannot love. It is not your place and really it has nothing to do with you. I don’t want this on my page, it’s embarrassing, it’s sad and I don’t know when cyberbullying became trendy or a points system. I don’t know why it’s a cool thing.”

    More recently, in an interview for Elle UK, the actress spoke out about the online abuse again, saying “I know that part of being in the spotlight is that people might invade your privacy and have opinions on it, but it’s bizarre that normal folk are allowed to display such hate and opinions on a part of my life that I’m not putting out there,” she said. “It’s a strange side of fame that you’re allowed to be torn apart by thousands of people even though you didn’t put that piece of you out there.” She went on to say, “I don’t want to talk about it because it’s not something I want to highlight, but my point to all this is that isn’t it odd that a stranger can totally tear apart someone’s relationship and it’s allowed?”

    While Pugh’s rebuff of cyberbullies was inspiring, the question still remains: Why do people have such an issue with Pugh and Braff’s relationship? Older male celebrities dating younger women is a tale as old as time. Think of Leonardo DiCaprio, known for dating women as much 20 years his junior, or Dennis Quaid (65) and girlfriend Laura Savoie (26). These couples don’t receive the kind of abuse Braff and Pugh have weathered, so what sets them apart? Perhaps the answer lies with Pugh’s fame. She is unquestionably the bigger star in the couple, so maybe fans’ image of who a beautiful young star should date isn’t compatible with Braff, who is cute in a non-threatening way and in no way the traditional Hollywood heart throb.

    But then why don’t people have issues with Leonardo Dicaprio dating little-known models and actresses? Well, sexism, of course. We expect a big star like Leo to date young beautiful women, and we have no issue with the age gap because we don’t feel like we know the women in the relationship; they’re just unknown, beautiful faces. Not only that, but we expect famous women to date men who are even more famous than them, in order to increase their own star power. Meanwhile, famous men can exist in their own orbit of stardom and date who they choose.

    We expect young female starlets like Pugh to date hunky heartthrobs while she’s in her prime, before she ages out of the narrow window in which women are valued in Hollywood. It makes us uncomfortable that Pugh is dating an older man who is not a massive star and not sexy in a traditional way, because it doesn’t fit with the narrative we’ve come to expect from the people we choose to bestow fame upon.

    Our response to Pugh’s relationship also reflects the way society views a woman’s personal autonomy. When Ashton Kutcher was dating much older Demi Moore, no one questioned his decision-making. But people seem to think that Pugh needs to be warned against making a mistake in dating Braff, that she isn’t capable of making her own relationship choices. Why? You guessed it: sexism. Culturally, we don’t trust women to make decisions in the same way we trust men. Not only that, but in the case of Leo and his semi-anonymous young lovers, in our eyes, the women in the relationship don’t possess the kind of personal autonomy Pugh does; we don’t know them, they’re just pieces of eye candy. Pugh, on the other hand, has become a human being in our eyes, something that isn’t automatic when we perceive women the way it is for men. But that doesn’t mean she’s free from the unfair expectations we place on all women, famous or not.

    On some level, we feel that Florence Pugh owes us a sexy, tumultuous relationship with some hot young Hollywood star. We feel that since we have decided to make her famous, to watch her movies and invest in her personal life, it is her duty to entertain us. Having a stable relationship with a 45-year-old nice-guy who doesn’t have a six pack and is known for a funny sitcom—not hit action movies—isn’t entertaining. That isn’t what we want to read about in the tabloids.

    So, summarily, while you may think that it’s anti-feminist that Pugh is dating a much older man, and you may think that commenting on her relationship is in some way proving your devotion to her, you couldn’t be more wrong. If you have a problem with Pugh dating Braff, you’re essentially saying that she can’t be trusted to make her own choices, and you’re making her relationship about you and your own prejudice, not her and her happiness.

    Just let Florence Pugh and Zach Braff be happy, okay?

    It doesn’t come close to ending there. Miss Kylie went on to post another Instagram story Facetiming Hailey Bieber zooming in closely on their eyebrows. This comes a few short months after Hailey and Selena broke the internet with a photograph of them together, signaling that the feud was

    Although Kylie Jenner herself commented “this is reaching. No shade towards Selena ever and I didn’t see her eyebrows posts! U guys are seriously making something out of nothing this is silly,” and Selena confirmed, “It’s all unnecessary. I’m a fan of Kylie!” fans were not sold.

    Another eyebrow-raising moment came soon after. A resurfaced clip from years ago showed Hailey Bieber gagging on camera after Taylor Swift is mentioned during an awards show began circulating on TikTok. Selena herself commented in defense of Taylor, saying “So sorry, my best friend is and continues to be one of the best in the game.” It further fueled the Hailey versus Selena drama.

    The mean girl behavior has since torn the internet in half, once again questioning the overlap between Selena Gomez’s

    Selena Gomez seems to be the reigning queen of this battle, with Hailey Bieber losing more than 800,000 followers on Instagram and Kylie Jenner losing over three million. In less than three days, Selena Gomez gained four
    million followers on the social media platform and 10.2 million in under a week. Selena has overtaken Kylie as the most followed person on the app, and the most followed female celebrity across social media.

    Amidst all of the drama, Selena deleted her TikTok for a few days. However, she’s made her triumphal return with a video where she even mouths “thank you” to the camera. It comes after speculation over her looks due to her ongoing battle with Lupus and a flush of attention on the whole love triangle. Her message?
    “Please, please be kinder and consider others’ mental health. My heart has been so heavy and I only want good for everyone. All my love.”

    We’re only one episode deep into HBO’s live-action adaptation of The Last of Us and fans think they’ve discovered the actor who’ll play Abby.

    In a recent tweet, The Last of Us News, a community-run TLoU fan account, uploaded a screenshot of the game creator, Neil Druckmann, following actor Shannon Berry on Instagram. Of course, Druckmann’s following of The Wilds actor could just be his way of pulling a Hideo Kojima by showing interest in actors who star in shows that are similar to his own works.

    But give the internet an inch and they’ll take a mile because Twitter has been buzzing about how perfect Berry’s casting would be for Abby, especially when you consider how closely her face resembles the former Firefly and surprise co-star of The Last of Us Part II. It probably also doesn’t help that Berry’s followed Druckmann back on Insta, but that’s show business baby!

    “Hey, she’s 22. Bella Ramsey is 19. Their age difference is spot on for Ellie and Abby,” one Twitter user wrote.

    “God, I hope it happens. She’s the perfect Abby,” wrote another.

    “Whoever gets the role I really hope they don’t get the abuse Laura Bailey did!! Neither Laura or whoever gets the role for the series deserves it!” another observed.

    “Becoming a Shannon Berry Abby Anderson truther as we speak,” wrote one Twitter user, who went the extra mile by making a Kpop-style fancam video of the actor after someone’s suggestion that Florence Pugh would be a good Abby.

    Should Abby appear in TLoU (prestige TV edition), “Abby Anderson truthers” think the show should save her appearance for the final episode of the season, so as to create a neat throughline between the original game’s ending and its sequel.

    The Worst (And Not-So-Bad) Video Game Movies

    Since The Last of Us premiered on the streamer, fans and critics alike have heralded the HBO show as the one that’s finally broken the terrible video game adaptation curse. While I think the show knocked it out of the park with its 80-minute pilot episode, I can’t help but notice the pop culture zeitgeist’s tendency to haphazardly regurgitate that accolade whenever a new video game adaptation that isn’t dog water comes out.

    The ‘95 Mortal Kombat movie (which is good, don’t @ me), Paramount Pictures’ Sonic films, and Netflix’s Castlevania, League of Legends, and Cyberpunk 2077 shows have all rightfully received the same praise for their overall quality and respect for source material. But much like how Disney keeps having new “first LGBTQ characters,” gamers always tout the latest video game adaptation hotness as finally having “broken the curse” despite us having gone through this whole song and dance like five times over the past two years or so. I suppose recency bias is a bitch.

    Regardless, we’ll have to wait and see whether the internet’s admittedly parasocial stalking of Druckmann’s Insta follows results in Berry’s casting as Abby. But right now let’s just appreciate how yoked out Abby is.

    Despite keeping their three-year relationship completely out of the spotlight, Florence Pugh and Zach Braff frequently found themselves the subject of negative comments and tabloid headlines. And in her new cover interview for Vogue‘s Winter issue, the actor once again addressed the public’s problem with her private life.

    Pugh said of her previous relationship, “We weren’t in anyone’s faces. It was just that people didn’t like it.” She continued, “They imagined me with someone younger and someone in blockbusters. I think young relationships in Hollywood are so easily twisted because they add to the gossip sites. It’s exciting to watch. And I think I was in a relationship that didn’t do any of that.”

    Braff also spoke to the magazine for the story and had nothing but effusive compliments for his ex-girlfriend. “I quite simply think she’s one of the greatest actors of her generation,” he said. “She’s just magnetic. You cannot take your eyes off of her.” The director added, “And it’s not just her beauty and it’s not just her acting ability, it’s that thing, that magic thing that transcends the screen, where anyone and everyone goes: I want to see whatever this person does.”

    All of this comes after Pugh revealed in August that she and her boyfriend of three years had quietly broken up earlier that year. In the cover story for Harper’s Bazaar‘s September 2022 issue, the Don’t Worry Darling star told the magazine, “We’ve been trying to do this separation without the world knowing, because it’s been a relationship that everybody has an opinion on. We just felt something like this would really do us the benefit of not having millions of people telling us how happy they are that we’re not together. So we’ve done that.” She said, “I automatically get a lumpy throat when I talk about it.”

    Pugh also noted that just because her job is very public doesn’t mean her personal life is also up for discussion. “Whenever I feel like that line has been crossed in my life, whether it’s paparazzi taking private moments, or moments that aren’t even real, or gossip channels that encourage members of the public to share private moments of famous people walking down the street, I think it’s incredibly wrong,” she told Harper’s Bazaar at the time. “I don’t think that people, just because they have this job, that every aspect of their life should be watched and written about. We haven’t signed up for a reality TV show.”

    After meeting on set for Olivia Wilde’s psychological thriller, the two made their relationship official in January 2020…but not without loads of controversy. In what became one of the messiest relationships – and press tours – of all time, Styles and Wilde most definitely stepped on some toes in the name of love.

    With reports that Wilde was simultaneously trying to win back Jason Sudeikis while courting Styles, fans were speculating a split was on the horizon. Olivia was spotted at Harry’s final show in Los Angeles on November 2_, as well as another one of Harry’s mega-famous newly single ex-girlfriends…Kendall Jenner.

    Interesting enough, Kendall Jenner and NBA star Devin Booker have also reportedly broken up after two years together. As expected, both couples had the same reasoning for splitting: “they’re at different points in their demanding careers.”

    While I’m putting in my application as Styles’ next girlfriend, I wouldn’t be shocked if Kendall is coming back for seconds.

She faced criticism for her fashion choice online, to which she responded with a powerful Instagram post. Since then, she’s continued to wear sheer outfits because she’s “come to terms with the intricacies of [her] body that make [her, her.]”

    “Listen, I knew when I wore that incredible Valentino dress that there was no way there wouldn’t be a commentary on it,” she wrote in her July post. “Whether it be negative or positive, we all knew what we were doing.     David Harbour is branching out from his Stranger Things fame to develop his MCU character, Red Guardian. After previously appearing in Black Widow, Harbour now says the upcoming Thunderbolts will bring something new. Thunderbolts, the final film of Phase 5, sees Red Guardian thrown into a whole new scenario. In the movie, he’ll be joining a Suicide Squad-like team of anti-heroes.

    In addition to Harbour’s Red Guardian, there are plenty of other “heroes” on the Thunderbolts team. Based on concept art, the group also features Wyatt Russell as John Walker, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, Julia Louis-Dreyfus as Valentina, and the list goes on. Additionally, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, and Olga Kurylenko as Taskmaster, will also appear in the film.

    Collider recently spoke with David Harbour, and while the conversation wasn’t centered around Thunderbolts, things understandably drifted in that direction. He shared the following thoughts on the film:

    It’s really cool. We introduce a thing that’s super cool. It’s vital. I’m psyched that Julia Louis Dreyfus’ character is going to be, in a bigger way, explored … I just love this mercenary element in the MCU. MCU has always been sort of elevated in a certain way. Captain America, even Iron Man, although he has egos, are always in it for the right reasons or ultimately does the right thing. And I like these guys who are a bunch of losers or a bunch of guys who can’t quite get it right. And so far what they’ve pitched me just feels really cool

    As of now, Thunderbolts is slated for release on July 26th of 2022.

    If the lilting Irish drear of the recent release The Banshees of Inisherin just wasn’t gloomy enough for you, perhaps Sebastián Lelio’s new film The Wonder (in theaters November 2, on Netflix November 16) will satisfy that appetite. Grave and mysterious, The Wonder is a drama about a terrible time in Ireland’s history, and the perhaps eternal clench of religion and superstition. 

    It’s 1862 in a small Irish village, the ragged population still staggering around in the ruinous aftermath of the Great Famine, which killed a million people and saw the emigration of twice that number. Those left behind are battered and haunted, and perhaps primed to believe in something miraculous. And thus a young girl, Anna (Kila Lord Cassidy), has convinced her fellow townsfolk that she is surviving on “manna from heaven” alone; she hasn’t eaten any food in four months, she says, a kind of divine corrective to the hunger that has so ravaged Ireland, particularly its children.

    Florence Pugh plays Lib, a nurse from London who has been brought across the Irish Sea to investigate Anna’s claims. Laden with both personal grief and harrowing memories of her time as a nurse during the Crimean War, Lib is a familiar kind of detective: flinty with a sad backstory, a Scully-esque skeptic who loses a bit of herself as a cloistered community envelops her. 

    The Wonder is adapted from the novel by Emma Donoghue, whose bestselling Room was another intimate portrait of a child (and his mother) in peril. Lelio’s film is a more gothic take on that subject and is perhaps more concerned with community ethos than with the ailing child at the center of this collective delusion—or, maybe, sinister hoax. 

    In some senses, The Wonder is a procedural, as Lib prods at possible explanations and her overseers—Toby Jones’s petty and unscientific physician, Ciarán Hinds’s looming clergyman—thwart her attempts at rational diagnosis. But Lelio’s creeping visuals (with Ari Wegner’s invaluable cinematography) and Matthew Herbert’s eerie-ethereal score suggest something more metaphysical than practical. There is a mystery to be solved, sure, but the ineffable whims and obsessions of heart and mind can perhaps never be answered. 

    The Wonder has a moody, immersive pull. Its grim atmosphere conjures up both the horror of the past and a chilly sense of foreboding, connecting this fictional depiction of mass trauma to, perhaps, our own. We, too, are gripped by a sense of the world ending, or having already ended. We’ve seen that fear and despair give birth to so many fugues of dangerous magical conviction, burbling up online and, more and more, carried into the halls of power. 

    At least, that’s one way to read the film. Complicating interpretation is Lelio’s choice to employ a gimmicky framing device to drive home some kind of point. The Wonder begins with an acknowledgment of its artifice, showing us a soundstage as a narrator, the actor Niamh Algar, explains what we are about to watch. The film ends with her too, a reminder that what we’ve seen is but a story, one of the many that make up human civilization. Science, so fiercely clung to by Lib, is a story same as religion is, a character played by Algar posits in the film. All of our perception is just narrative, a somewhat dubious assertion that Lelio nonetheless wants to drive home.

    This is a strained synthesizing of themes, an unnecessary bit of meta wankery that badly breaks the film’s engulfing spell. It plays like avant-garde pretension, a throwback to the self-conscious presentation of 20th-century theater—and, certainly, some film. The Wonder is otherwise too deliberately cramped and interior a film to support this wild swing toward Brechtian alienation. 

    Lelio’s haughty piece of flair doesn’t diminish the impression made by Pugh, who fluidly projects compassion tinged with the faintest hint of menace. Stern and resourceful, Pugh’s Lib has confronted the most visceral evidence of our fragile mortality. She brooks no fantastical thinking, even the sort that might be called hope. Pugh expertly complicates that pragmatism with Lib’s own weathered frailty; Lib can’t stop her own pain from informing Anna’s, which sets them both on a risky course. Compare this Pugh to the one seen in Midsommar, another unblinking picture of terror and mourning, and it’s clear just how wide-ranging Pugh’s understanding of human behavior truly is. That magnetic intelligence brings The Wonder close to transcendence, until its director throws back the curtain and, quite fruitlessly, reminds us it’s all been for show.

    After off-screen drama threatened to consume Olivia Wilde’s “Don’t Worry Darling,” the Warner Bros. release opened No. 1 at the box office, debuting with $19.2 million in ticket sales, according to studio estimates Sunday.

    Starring Florence Pugh and Harry Styles, “Don’t Worry Darling” was engulfed by a storm of controversies that revolved around everything from Pugh’s allegedly strained relationship with Wilde to whether Styles might have even spit on co-star Chris Pine at the film’s Venice Film Festival premiere. (Styles denied it.) The movie, too, was torched by critics (38% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) and arrived in theaters with more baggage than any recent release.

    For an original film that cost $35 million to make, a $19.2 million launch was solid — and slightly more than the studio had forecast. A large number of moviegoers — including plenty of Styles fans — turned up to see what all the fuss was about.

    But the release of “Don’t Worry Darling,” playing in 4,113 theaters, was also no home run. Audiences gave it a B- CinemaScore, and ticket buyers fell off on Saturday after more promising results on Thursday and Friday. Warner Bros. said the audience was 66% female. The film added $10.8 million internationally.

    Jeff Goldstein, distribution chief for Warner Bros., estimated that “the background noise had a neutral impact.” The studio, he said, was “pleased with these results given our modest production budget.”

    The audience scores and tapering-off ticket sales suggest “Don’t Worry Darling” may struggle to hold well in the coming weeks. But its good-enough debut means that Wilde’s film didn’t turn into the complete fiasco that some pegged it to be.

    Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for data firm Comscore, said that, ultimately, bad publicity was good publicity for Wilde’s follow-up to her directorial debut, the 2019 teen comedy “Booksmart.”

    “The latest from Olivia Wilde benefited from the heightened awareness and mainstream press coverage that made ‘Don’t Worry Darling’ the virtual water cooler film of the moment and raised its FOMO factor to even greater heights and this paid big dividends at the box office,” said Dergarabedian.

    Last week’s top film, Gina Prince-Bythewood’s African epic “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, slid to second place with $11.1 million in its second weekend of release. That was a modest 42% dip for the Sony Pictures release, a sign of resiliency for the acclaimed action drama.

    Third place went to a familiar box-office force. The Walt Disney Co.′ rerelease of James Cameron’s “Avatar” grossed $10 million domestically and $20.5 million internationally, 13 years after its initial run in theaters. Cameron’s remastered “Avatar,” playing in 1,860 theaters, was again especially popular in 3-D, which accounted for a whopping 93% of its domestic sales. A prelude to the upcoming December release of the long-awaited sequel “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the rerelease further pads the all-time worldwide box office record for “Avatar,” which now surpasses $2.85 billion.

    Holding well in fourth place was “Barbarian,” the Airbnb thriller from Disney and 20th Century Studios. In its third weekend of release, the film added 550 theaters and fell just 26% from the weekend prior. “Barbarian” has thus far grossed $28.4 million against a $4 million budget.

    Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released Monday.
