  • After Lawsuit, Cleveland Maintains It Had Right to Close Play Bar & Grill After September 7 Shooting – Cleveland Scene

    [ad_1]

No more than an hour after 40 shots went off near West 10th in the Flats East Bank, Mayor Justin Bibb took out his phone to notify his cabinet.

“Shooting in flats. 5 shot. Likely to be big media incoming,” he texted his team, according to public records obtained by News 5 this week. “Need to ensure tight strong comms on our side for any incoming.”

As for the bar the alleged shooters left:

“Use every dept to shut this place down,” Bibb wrote. “If we get sued, we get sued.”

    Well, they got sued.

On Wednesday, two weeks after Play Bar owner David Hill filed a civil rights complaint in the U.S. Northern District Court, Cleveland’s lawyers responded by defending Bibb’s call to shut down and board up Hill’s bar hours after shots rang out.

The city said its closure was not unlawful as Hill has claimed it was for weeks.

There have been five incidents involving police since the start of the summer, police records show, from guns being pulled out on valets (in June), to a shooting and assault on its premises (July), a “combative disorderly male” spitting on pedestrians (in August) and a robbery the same day as the shooting.

“The continued operation of this establishment created an imminent danger to the life and health of the residents and visitors of the City of Cleveland,” Public Safety Director Dornat Drummond argued in a letter attached to the city’s response, “which required an immediate order to shut down this establishment.”

“It is therefore declared that Play Bar & Grill is a nuisance,” he said.

Hill, who has framed the boarding-up on social media as an attack on Black businesses, formalized those accusations in his original complaint on September 15. The city never gave him due process before Bibb made the call to shut him down, he argued.

“The city acted without providing [Hill] notice or an opportunity to be heard,” that complaint reads, actions that caused Hill “ongoing financial losses and reputational harm.”

“The actions of the City of Cleveland have created the public perception that [Play] is somehow responsible for the criminal actions of citizens outside of its business,” it added.

Meanwhile, the landlord of Play also canceled the establishment’s lease, noting that the alleged involvement in the shooting followed warnings about previous incidents involving alleged violence at the bar.

Hill or his attorney, Joseph Morse, could not be reached for comment by end of the day Wednesday.

A federal judge also this week rejected Play’s motion for a temporary restraining order against the closure.

But on social media, co-owners said there was a double standard at play after the subsequent shooting in the Flats East Bank the last weekend of September, where one was killed and another injured outside of Punch Bowl Social. Why, they wondered, were other businesses not immediately shut down as well?

“We’ve been closed for the past three weeks, going on four weeks, and the exact same thing happened down the street, in the exact same area,” Hill told News 5 Cleveland. “Who can they blame now?”

  • Suddenly, Water Shoes Are Summer’s Most Controversial Fashion Trend

Fashion has long departed from trends that would be considered safe. As much as the classic polka dot is enjoying a resurgence right now, some of the weirdest trends have succeeded at not only dominating our FYPs, but also our bank accounts. Sardines, dolphins, diaper shorts, TikTok’s obsession with Loft — you name it — it’s most likely been a fad at some point. You’d think we’ve seen it all, but of course, we found another item that’s unexpectedly climbing the sartorial hierarchy: water shoes.

Yes, that’s right, the shoe style that was originally constructed for water activities like surfing or swimming is now a fashion statement. But how did we graduate to immersing them into our street style wardrobe? The answer remains to be seen, but Irina Shayk’s embrace of the shoe is a great point of reference. For a casual day of escapades in New York, the model wore a black T-shirt and black midi skirt with an oversize gray blazer and the Constance crossbody bag from Hermès — all pieces that would normally comprise a stylish outfit. Yet she added unusual flair with a pair of Wilcor neoprene slip-ons with pink piping, suggesting that water shoes weren’t just made for the waterpark. I mean, if she wore them out and about in one of the world’s most respected fashion capitals, then they’re acceptable (kind of).

Whether you’re influenced by Shayk’s trés chic look or just need a new pair for your next trek to the beach, keep scrolling to shop the best water shoes.

The ballerina flats trend is having a renaissance, and I’ve officially succumbed. After spotting them on stylish celebrities like Hailey Bieber and Meghan Markle and watching them pop up on runways last spring, I suppose it was only a matter of time before I shopped for a pair. You can never have too many comfortable work shoe options, and I prefer flats over heels. The first ballet flats I bought years ago have a bow-adorned, round toe, so this time I wanted to try another take on the silhouette. I’ve been eyeing Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats ($98) and love how they incorporate the Mary Jane strap — another shoe trend revival! — so I decided to give them a try.

What I Love About Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats

I’d be remiss if I didn’t immediately dive into the buttery-soft feel of this shoe. The leather is so unbelievably supple that I actually couldn’t stop stroking the display shoe as I waited for the sales associate to find my size. I’ve tried on many iterations of this style of ballet flat from a variety of brands and immediately noticed how the elastic straps would cut into the tops of my feet, or the way the back of the shoes would dig into my heels. With this shoe, they immediately felt comfortable and I didn’t have to suffer through a breaking-in period.

Aside from their blister-free fit, there are other small details in the shoe’s design that I really appreciate. The shoe features a squared toe with slightly rounded edges, so they simultaneously manage to feel fresh yet timeless. The toe is also elongated beyond where my toe naturally ends (very ballerina-like!), which keeps my feet from looking short and stubby. I can see the smallest bit of toe cleavage peeking out, which also tricks the eye, making my feet appear longer and somehow slimmer. These seemingly small features are what help set this style apart from other similar pairs I’ve tried and ultimately didn’t take home.

What’s Worth Noting About Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats

The Greta Ballet Flats come in 15 different styles, ranging from open-weave leather to brightly-colored suede, so the flexibility and feel of the shoe varies depending on the material you choose. I went with the bestselling leather version of the flats, so I can’t speak to the comfort level of the other styles. Madewell also recommends ordering a half size smaller than your normal size to allow for the natural stretch that happens with genuine leather. I ended up going with my usual size because they felt most comfortable and I was too worried about blisters to risk it. I’ve worn them a handful of times and so far so good.

Madewell also gives customers a heads up that “wrinkling and buckling may occur due to the unlined construction.” I actually don’t mind this — I think that the natural patina that develops in genuine leather is part of its charm, but if the thought of that scares you, you might want to go for a fully lined option. If you bought the first iteration of these flats and were unimpressed, Madewell published a note that “an early version of this shoe had a faulty lining that has been fixed for all new shipments.”

Who Are Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats Best For?

These flats are great for anyone who appreciates staying on top of trends but tends to hold onto classic silhouettes that never really go out of style. If you’re looking for a comfortable pair of soft leather flats you can style with everything from skirts to barrel jeans, give these a try.

Additional Details About Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats

    • Materials: leather upper and leather lining.
    • Leather is “sourced from a tannery that was certified by the Leather Working Group (LWG), an organization that works to promote sustainable environmental practices in the leather industry,” according to the brand.
    • Available in 15 styles.

Where Are Madewell’s Greta Ballet Flats Available?

These flats are available at Nordstrom and Madewell.

First Look: Hi 5, Now Open in the Flats

    Douglas Trattner

Hi 5 is now open in the Flats.

On a busy summer weekend, Forward Hospitality will welcome approximately 6,000 guests at its various Flats-based businesses. The multifaceted portfolio includes FWD Day + Nightclub, Welcome to the Farm, Good Night John Boy, Glamper and I Hate Cowboys, which is the baby of the bunch at three months old. Last week, the prolific hospitality group rolled out its latest concept, Hi 5, a casual sports bar-themed spot that is sandwiched between the Farm and Glamper rooftop bar.

Also this summer, Raheem Sealey joined the team as chef-partner. Since Memorial Day, his new menus have elevated the offerings at the venues that offer food, mainly Welcome to the Farm, I Hate Cowboys and, starting this week, Hi 5. Sealey was working at the celebrated KYU restaurant in Miami until the Covid shutdown, at which point he started down the barbecue route. The chef’s Drinking Pig BBQ pop-ups quickly became the talk of the town, selling out daily and garnering the title of Best BBQ from the Miami New Times.

The Virgin Islands native named his barbecue business after the famous beer-drinking pigs of St. Croix. At Drinking Pig BBQ at the Farm, guests can enjoy traditional barbecue items like brisket, ribs, pulled pork, pork belly, sausage and beef ribs in platters with classic sides or as handhelds.

“We do low and slow, which is what Texas does, but we jazz it up with different flavors – some Caribbean, some Asian – from my background of cooking,” Sealey explains. “I try not put myself in any box. As chefs we don’t get to express our talent the way we want to because we end up doing a specific cuisine.”

The Hi 5 space was an empty shell waiting for an identity, says Forward principal Bobby Rutter.

“As the area evolved we kept debating what else it needed,” he says. “We wanted to create a spot that’s neighborhood focused – kind of like the Cheers of the Flats.”

The second-level space has been home to the seasonal Christmas Bar – and will continue to do so, adds Rutter – but now it’s a handsome sports bar. The team touched every surface, adding new wood floors, brick veneer, new furniture, fixtures and lighting. A pool table nook overlooks Old River Road and other bar games will be added. Like all of the Flats-based properties, it has exceptional river views and garage doors that open high and wide.

Up here, Sealey utilizes the same craft barbecue but delivers it in a more appropriate bar-focused way. The menu has things like pulled pork nachos, brisket-stuffed egg rolls, smoked chicken wings, smoked turkey clubs and lighter bowls starring smoked chicken or salmon.

I Hate Cowboys rolled out in spring, bringing with it a more relaxed environment bolstered by a killer bourbon selection. Located across the alley patio from Welcome to the Farm, the bar offers a peaceful escape from the crowds, noise and three-deep bars.

“It’s been a game-changer for us because it’s higher end, seated and not nearly as crowded,” Rutter states. “It’s a little bit of an extension from the Farm, but it’s a different vibe.”

At Cowboys, Sealey offers a more streamlined menu starring buttermilk fried chicken, a burger and a few other items. Those foods are joined by craft cocktails and other beverages.

The added food items throughout the entire compound have given all the properties a boost, says Rutter. Those improvements happen to coincide with a continued rise in numbers that the Flats and adjoining waterways have been seeing this year.

“We’ve never sold the volume of food that we’ve sold down here over the last 60 days,” Rutter reports. “This is my 10th year down here and we’ve never seen this much boat traffic. It’s not even close.”

“I’ve always been the type of person who refuses to take off their heels at special occasions, like weddings and Sweet 16’s, to change into comfy, funky socks. I’d truthfully rather get blisters than be caught in socks on the dance floor. But I’ve realized that the better solution to stylishly suffering in heels all night may be slipping into a pair of elevated ballet flats. I’ve been intrigued by the ballet flat comeback, but I have never made the leap before agreeing to review these Dear Frances large black crystal sheer flats.

“These flats are obviously more comfortable than many of my heels, but they’re honestly even fancier than some of them, too. I also appreciate that the sheer black mesh is dark enough that you can’t tell whether I have a fresh pedicure or not. While I haven’t had the chance to wear them out yet, I’m 100% going to pack my Balla Crystal flats, which are pretty flexible and could definitely fit into a large cocktail purse, to my next party.” —Victoria Montalti, Associate Affiliate Writer

  • Hailey Bieber Just Wore the Shoe Color That Literally Transforms an Outfit

Hailey Bieber Just Wore the Shoe Color That Literally Transforms an Outfit

    [ad_1]

Something that I think about a lot is shoe-color trends and what shoe colors to wear with an outfit. Something tells me that Hailey Bieber might be similar to me in that respect, given the shoes she wore earlier this week to change up an outfit. Bieber is no stranger to trendy colors, including the trendiest of them all at the moment: red. And I think it’s worth discussing how she incorporated red into her outfit recently.

Last Sunday, Bieber was photographed wearing jeans, a striped Loewe polo top, and a leather blazer. She topped the look off with black The Row loafers. Two days later, Bieber wore almost the exact same outfit except instead of the blazer she wore a trench coat and instead of black loafers, she wore the same pair but in red.

As you’ll see below, the addition of the red loafers really punched up the outfit and made me do a double-take, even though I’m used to seeing red shoes on people at this point in the trend cycle. My advice is to do as Hailey does and keep swapping your black shoes for red ones. Keep scrolling to shop some of my favorite crimson footwear on the market right now.

Back to the Office? Let's Make Your Schlep a Little Chicer

    [ad_1]

I’m here to help take the edge off winter’s sartorial bummer of trekking to the office in the cold or rain with your laptop in tow. Commutes may vary, including crowded subways, icy driveways, or chaotic daycare drop-offs (doggy or human). Needless to say, there’s always some practical hindrance to our commute that cramps our (otherwise excellent) workwear style.

There are a handful of fashion items I deem capable of entirely changing the weekday game that are so good I’m betting they’ll also find their way into your weekend wardrobe. I’m talking waterproof footwear (no duck boots, I promise), warm coats (no puffer jackets, I swear), and one somewhat controversial cozy accessory (I’m telling you, it will save your hair from the wind better than any hat ever could). Whether you can justify spending large on your workwear—I love this for you—or are on a strict budget for the New Year, there’s an option here for you that will put the “cute” back in your commute.

Simple and Stylish: Key Items for the Minimalist in 2024

    [ad_1]

My love of extremely chill fashion is showing no signs of slowing down. As I begin to think about where my wardrobe is heading, the purchases I’m most interested in are best described as quietly cool—relevant and forward but not quite trendy, more like seasonal updates for those always-on classic styles.

For the year ahead, I’m mainly looking to reinvest in some of my most-loved items of this year, doubling down on chic and easy accessories, wide-leg trousers, flat footwear, and a slew of other items that have had the most wear. As for the new things piquing my interest, they still center minimalism: clean lines, strong neutral pieces, basics that definitely aren’t boring. I want even my most low-key buys to have a point of view, and these 37 pared-back styles all fit the bill—on top of that, they look expensive and are sure to go the distance in 2024.

So, my official mantra at the moment is ‘fewer, better things’, but if I’m allowed to have a second, it would be ‘chic, not trendy’. But look, as I write this I’m sitting here in my Sambas—so I’m clearly not anti-trend, nor am I immune to a bit of hype. That being said, I have been doubling (and tripling, even quadrupling) down on certain fashion styles and silhouettes for a few years now, and it feels like over the past few years, new iterations of these classic pieces continue to be shoppable each season.

Standout Sale: 31 Nordstrom Items That Demand Attention

    [ad_1]

I’m an unapologetic lover of HGTV. (Yes, you may DM me if you have suggestions.) In one episode I watched recently, the husband-and-wife duo were discussing landscaping for a craftsman-style house they were renovating in the South, flower boxes in particular. It turns out there are three key types of plants to know about when it comes to flower boxes: thrillers, fillers, and spillers. Thrillers are the hero flowers of the season that are the main event, fillers are the low-key shrubs that fill in the gaps, and spillers are the ones that hang down over the edge and add dimensions and, most importantly, create a little drama.

As I hunted through Nordstrom’s current markdowns to share the best of the sale, my HGTV-riddled brain started filtering them into corresponding buckets. You’re just going to have to trust me. Here they are, and they’re all on sale and very deserving of your attention.

Personally, my bets are on Nordstrom, mostly because I can confirm their site is stocked with hit after hit after perusing all 1,000+ relevant styles they currently have to offer.

For starters, the selection isn’t a limited one at all. I Spent an Entire Afternoon Looking at Nordstrom Boots and Flats—I Love These 29

    [ad_1]

Let’s just get right down to it—Nordstrom has one of the most epic shoe departments around. Period. There’s always something to suit a variety of styles and budgets. Now that we’re heading deeper into October, my attention has been shifting toward shopping for boots as the temperatures are starting to dip. I also love a flats moment—whether that’s of-the-moment ballet flats or chic loafers (my favorite)—so I’ve been sorting through various flats as well.

Below, you’ll uncover an edit of the Nordstrom boots and flats I loved the most while spending the afternoon scrolling through the Nordy shoe section. You’ll notice everything from chunky Chelsea boots to knee-high styles to gorgeous flats that can be dressed up or down. Keep scrolling for more.

Suki Waterhouse Wore Trendy $115 Flats With Glowing Reviews on Amazon

Suki Waterhouse likely has access to any designer shoes she wants, but the fact that she recently opted for a pair of $115 shoes instead makes me think that they must be quite special. With the blazer and black maxi skirt she wore recently, Waterhouse opted to finish her look off with one of the biggest flat shoe trends of the year: Mary Janes.

There are so many Mary Janes on the market to choose from, but not all are created equal. That said, Waterhouse and Amazon shoppers seem to agree that Franco Sarto made an excellent pair, as they have nearly a five-star rating. The Franco Sarto shoes in question are the faux patent leather (another major trend) Tinsley Mary Jane flats, and she went with the black pair.

A little birdie told me that the shoes keep selling out, and I believe them because there’s currently only one color left in stock on Nordstrom (where the reviews are also glowing). The good news is that I found stock on Amazon (where they’re even on sale in certain colors) and elsewhere, so scroll on to order a pair if you’re so inclined. Studies show that they’ll sell out again.
