  • Banff Sunshine Meadows to Host Stoney Nakoda Watäga Dancers and Singers

    [ad_1]

Banff Sunshine Village is honoured to welcome the Stoney Nakoda Watäga Dancers and Singers for a weekend of cultural celebration on September 6th and 7th at Sunshine Meadows.

Banff Sunshine Village acknowledges that Banff National Park lies within the traditional and ancestral territory of the Stoney Nakoda First Nation and Tsuut’ina Nation, as well as the Blackfoot Confederacy, which includes the Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika Nations. We also recognize Treaties 6, 7, and 8, and the Métis peoples who reside in Alberta. For generations, the lands and waters of Banff National Park have been places of sustenance, ceremony, travel, and trade for Indigenous peoples.

In celebration of this rich heritage, Banff Sunshine has invited the Stoney Nakoda Watäga Dancers and Singers to share their traditions through song, dance, and storytelling. Visitors are invited to experience Indigenous culture in the alpine setting of Sunshine Meadows, surrounded by panoramic mountain views.

Guests can enjoy two live performances each day at 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM, with opportunities to connect with the dancers and singers throughout the village to learn more about the history and stories of the land.

Participation in the performances is included with a valid gondola sightseeing pass.

“We are grateful for the opportunity to share first nations culture with our guests, through welcoming the Stoney Nakoda Watäga Dancers and Singers to Sunshine Meadows,” said Kendra Scurfield, VP of Marketing, Brand & Communications at Banff Sunshine Village. “The cultural performances will showcase the beauty of the stony culture, and touch on the importance of the land we’re lucky enough to call home.”

OTTAWA — Snoop Dogg has welcomed Canada’s First Nations into his bid to buy the NHL’s Ottawa Senators with open arms.

The rapper is part of a group spearheaded by Los Angeles-based businessman Neko Sparks trying to buy the NHL franchise. Snoop Dogg posted a video to Instagram on Monday where he alluded to reports that the Sparks-led bid would include an equity stake for local Indigenous communities.

“It’s your boy big Snoop Dogg giving a shout out to the First Nations of Canada, that’s right, for joining Neko Sparks in the Ottawa Senators bid,” he said, standing in a recording studio wearing a Senators jersey. “We trying to do something, we trying to make a difference.”

The board of directors of Senators Sports & Entertainment initiated the process to sell the team last November after the death of owner Eugene Melnyk earlier that year. Melnyk left the franchise to his daughters, Anna and Olivia.

Another bid includes Canadian R&B singer The Weeknd, who according to media reports has agreed to be a partner in a bid led by Toronto billionaires Jeffrey and Michael Kimel.

A recent valuation by Forbes listed the Senators at US$800 million, 24th out of the NHL’s 30 teams.

Monday was the deadline for bids to be submitted to New York-based banker Galatioto Sports Partners, which is handling the sale for the Melnyk family. The Ottawa Sun reports that four groups submitted bids and one of those was at the $1 billion mark.

Snoop Dogg, a longtime hockey fan, has said he would use his stake in the Senators to help grow the sport in the United States, especially among Black children.

“I mean it’s official like a referee with a whistle,” said Snoop in Monday’s video. “We all together we try to make it better. We just need y’all to hit the lever and give us control.”

“We are excited to showcase and support Native and Indigenous artists and charities that are on the front line of causes that are important to Indigenous communities,” said professional cyclist and Dream Catcher Foundation co-founder Shayna Powless (Oneida Tribe of Wisconsin). Shayna’s fiancée and co-founder, Buffalo Bills Defensive Lineman Eli Ankou (Ojibwe – Dokis First Nation, Ottawa) added “Our foundation started as a way to impact and inspire Indigenous communities and youth through sports, but over the past year we expanded our platform to support other causes that are critical to Indigenous peoples.”

Eli and Shayna recruited other well-known Native American and First Nations celebrities and leaders to expand the Dream Catcher Foundation’s platform and reach. The “Dream Catcher Council” was created and includes actress/model Ashley Callingbull (Cree First Nations), actress Alyssa Wapanatâhk (Cree), MLB Pitcher Brandon Bailey (Chickasaw), singer/actor Brooke Simpson (Haliwa-Saponi), musician Cody Coyote (Ojibwe), actor Eugene Brave Rock (Kainai Nation Blackfoot), professional volleyball player Lauren Schad (Cheyenne River Sioux), professional lacrosse player Lyle Thompson (Onondaga Nation), professional basketball player Michael Linklater (Nehiyaw/Cree), pro cyclist Neilson Powless (Cherokee & Oneida), and storyteller Sarain Fox (Anishinaabe from Batchawana First Nation).

Eugene Brave Rock, best known for his starring role as “The Chief” in Wonder Woman is not only passionate about Indigenous art, but recognizes there are many worthy causes that are critical to Native communities, including his own passion for preserving Indigenous languages through the Oki Language Project. “Native and First Nation artists do such a great job reinforcing and preserving the culture of our various peoples” said Gene. “This event not only helps share the amazing work of talented artists, but the proceeds from any sales are shared equally among the artists and charities, including Dream Catcher Foundation, Oki Language Project, and others.”

Dream Catcher Foundation (www.dreamcatcherfdn.org) operates under A+C Foundation (Athletes/Artists + Causes), a 501(c)(3) public charity.
