  • Air district fines Martinez refinery nearly $375,000 for violations

Bay Area air quality officials have fined a Pacheco refinery nearly $375,000 after saying inspections of the facility uncovered 13 safety violations.

The Bay Area Air District leveled its $372,500 fine on the Marathon Martinez Refinery, which has its headquarters on Solano Avenue in Pacheco. The district said the violations were related to the refinery’s tanks, uncertified pieces of equipment at its on-site gas dispensing facility, and how the refinery reported delays.

Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve has been suspended one game and fined for her conduct during and after Friday’s 84-76 loss to the host Phoenix Mercury in Game 3 of their WNBA semifinals series, the league announced Saturday.

Minnesota assistant coaches Eric Thibault and Rebekkah Brunson were also fined for separate infractions.

The punishment stems from Reeve’s late-game outburst following a pivotal no-call involving Lynx star Napheesa Collier in the final minute. Reeve pursued and berated a game official on the court, was slow to leave after her ejection with 21.8 seconds remaining, directed profanity toward fans while exiting and later launched into a blistering critique of the league’s officiating in her postgame press conference.

‘For the leadership to deem those three people semifinals playoff worthy is (expletive) malpractice,’ she said of the officiating crew.

Video from courtside circulated on social media showing Reeve shouting obscenities at fans as she was escorted off the floor, while the National Basketball Referees Association publicly defended the no-call on the decisive play. Collier left the game with a leg injury, which Reeve suggested could be a fracture.

Reeve, a four-time WNBA champion and one of the league’s most accomplished coaches, will serve her suspension Sunday when the Lynx face the Mercury in Phoenix for Game 4. The series stands at 2-1 in favor of Phoenix.

Topless protestor who stormed Juno Awards stage pleads guilty to mischief, fined $600 | Globalnews.ca

A woman who protested topless onstage at the Juno Awards in Edmonton in March says she has agreed to pay a $600 fine.

Casey Hatherly, who goes by the name Ever, says she pleaded guilty to a charge of trespassing.

The environmental activist, who initially faced a charge of mischief, walked onto the Junos stage while Canadian musician Avril Lavigne was introducing a performance.

Messages written on the protester’s bare torso read “land back” and “save the Greenbelt,” referring to Ontario’s decision last year to open a protected area of land for housing.

Hatherly says $100 of her fine will go to a victims support group.

She says the timing of her fine is interesting, with the Alberta provincial election having wrapped up on Monday.

“Why would I wanna give $500 to this province that literally just elected an oil lobbyist while a third of the province is on fire?” she said in a phone interview, referring to Premier Danielle Smith. “What do they want my money for? Do they need to throw it in the fire?”

The activist, who is involved with a climate advocacy group called On2Ottawa, says they are planning more action.

“It’s only May, and how much of this country is actually on fire right now?” she says. “People are not paying attention and I definitely don’t think the work is over.”
