Miranda Rises? ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ Sequel Is in the Works

    [ad_1]

Get ready for a whole lot of references to florals for spring, girding your loins, and the color cerulean (though even we are not immune). There are reports that a sequel to the cult classic fashion film, The Devil Wears Prada, is in the works, and Meryl Streep as well as Emily Blunt have already signed on.

Puck first announced the news, which unsurprisingly has the Internet spinning. It has been reported that Oscar-winning producer Wendy Finerman is behind the project, and now, with Streep involved, others are more willing to sign on, including the original film’s screenwriter, Aline Brosh McKenna. The sequel will apparently follow a more modern storyline, with Streep’s hard-edged magazine editor Miranda Priestly facing impending retirement and the decline of the magazine industry. Blunt’s Emily Charlton, meanwhile, is now an executive at a major luxury group (akin to LVMH or Kering), forcing the two old foes to go head-to-head, as Miranda now needs Emily (and her advertising dollars) to keep the fictional Runway off the ground.

The news of a sequel really shouldn’t come as too surprising. The Devil Wears Prada is constantly discussed and referenced, yes, but there has been more action around the film recently. Earlier this year, Anne Hathaway joined Streep and Blunt on stage at the SAG Awards, where they quoted the movie to the joy of fans everywhere. Last year, too, when Hathaway and Blunt were paired together for Variety’s Actors on Actors, they discussed their love for the movie that helped make them famous. Then there’s the musical, starring Vanessa Williams as Miranda with music by Elton John, which began previews in Plymouth, England over the weekend before its opening in the West End in October. Plus, the film’s 20th anniversary is coming up in 2026…coincidence?

As for Hathaway and the film’s other actors like Stanley Tucci, there is no solid information regarding their involvement in the reported sequel. In fact, the actress was dubious when asked about the possibility of another Prada film just a few months ago, though she did sound interested in the off chance something came together. “We all love each other and if somebody could come up with a way to do it, I think we’d all be crazy not to,” Hathaway told V Magazine of joining on to the hypothetical project in April. Don’t expect Adrian Grenier to return as Andy’s much-maligned boyfriend, however, as last year screenwriter McKenna herself said that if she were to write a sequel, Andy and Nate would definitely not still be together.

As of now, Disney has not responded to the reports, so it’s unclear if this is all a pipe dream or something more serious to get excited about. Until we learn more, that’s all (we told you we aren’t immune to references).

‘A great place for weirdos’: Who we met on closing weekend at the Esquire Theatre

    [ad_1]

Say goodbye to another beloved Denver institution.

The Landmark Esquire Theatre will close after its final screenings on Thursday, July 18.

The theater is known for arthouse and independent films, as well as regular programming of the cult classics “Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “The Room.”

The 97-year-old theater, located at East 6th Avenue and North Downing Street, will be repurposed and turned into a mixed-use retail space.

According to a former employee, the theater has long been known as “a great place for weirdos.”

Here are the people we met as they gathered to give the theater one last late-night hurrah last Friday.

Jolee Harston, an organizer of an effort to save the Esquire Theater, gets emotional outside before one of the theater’s last late-night screenings before it closes for good. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

    Meet Jolee Harston.

She led a grassroots movement called “Save the Esquire.” But despite the group’s petitioning and fundraising efforts, fans were unable to stop the theater’s redevelopment.

“My first time coming, I was a senior in high school. It was for the Rocky Horror Picture Show, Midnight Madness. And it changed my life in a lot of ways,” she said. “I grew up in a very conservative town, conservative household, and I was coming to terms with being queer myself, and I didn’t really have that vocabulary yet. Coming to the Rocky Horror Picture Show here was the first time I’d ever been around the LGBTQ+ community. And it opened my eyes to not only what the world is, but it opened parts of myself to me that I was too afraid to look at before.”

The lesson Harston learned from all of her efforts to save the theater is that it’s important to be loud about preserving places before it’s too late.

“Tradition can be special,” she said, “and help keep character and culture in our city.”

A woman in a dress leans over the sidewalk, writing in yellow chalk.
Vanessa Loya writes “Denver, you’re tearing me apart!,” a nod to “The Room,” outside of the Landmark Esquire Theatre on its last weekend in operation. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

Nearby, Vanessa Loya was crouched on the curb, yellow chalk in hand.

“We’re here to see 2001: A Space Odyssey,” she said.

“I’m writing ‘Denver, you’re tearing me apart!’”

A woman in bangs and jeans squats on the sidewalk, which is covered with messages, with a piece of orange chalk in her hand. She smiles at the camera.
Leah Scott leaves a love note to the Landmark Esquire Theatre in chalk, during the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

On the other side of the sidewalk, Leah Scott was scrawling something near the theater doors.

“It feels like a very lively cultural center, or nucleus I guess,” she said of the Esquire. Adding, “It feels like a very familiar, welcoming space that has a character that a lot of other theaters lack.”

When asked what she was writing, she said, “I was going to write, ‘Oh, hi Mark.’ A quote from The Room.”

Three people lean on each other as they stare into the camera, waiting in a long line on the sidewalk.
Luca Jimenez (left to right), Loen Keane and Sheldon Hackler wait in line at the Landmark Esquire Theatre, during the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

As showtime approached, the line grew down Downing Street.

In that line, we met three friends, one of whom had come to the Esquire many times, one who had come a few times, and one who was experiencing the theater for the first — and last — time.

“I have three generations of my family who’ve been coming to the Esquire,” Luca Jimenez said.

“My mom was telling me, when she found out that it was closing, the first memory that she has of coming to the Esquire was actually coming here when 2001: A Space Odyssey was first releasing and she came inside and the whole lobby was done up like the inside of a spaceship,” Jimenez said. “And so I thought that that was cool that that was the first movie that she saw here and it’s the last movie that I’m seeing here.”

Jimenez said he wants to thank the Esquire for “all of the cool stuff that I’ve been able to see here and all of the stuff that I wasn’t able to see anywhere else.”

A man and a woman look right at the camera; she makes a thumbs-down gesture and puffs her lip out in a frown. They're in a big line of people on the sidewalk.
Robert and Finn Hearne wait in line at the Landmark Esquire Theatre, during the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

We also spoke with Finn Hearne, 18.

The first time she came to the Esquire was to see “Evil Dead 2” with her mom. After that, she was hooked.

“This year I got a job, which, oh my gosh. It meant having money to spend,” Hearne said. “So I’ve been making an effort to come to see most of the movies that they have.”

She added, “I feel like there’s a lot of places in Denver that are losing their genuineness. I don’t know if there’s a better word for that, but I feel like there’s definitely a shift to more corporate things. You’re seeing a lot of chains pop up in place of mom and pops, which is kind of sad.”

A mustachioed man is out of focus in the foreground; behind him a marquee reads "Thank you for 97 years."
Neil Duprey stands in front of the Landmark Esquire Theatre, on the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

Down the line a bit, we met Neil Duprey.

He moved to Denver three years ago and quickly realized that the Esquire has a strong community.

“You see a lot of the same people at the late-night shows and it’s just firmly baked into this neighborhood,” he said.

“Part of my heart is breaking tonight for sure.”

A man in glasses stares into the camera as he waits in a long line of people on the sidewalk; chalk messages cover the ground beneath him.
Bruce Novak waits in line at the Landmark Esquire Theatre, during the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

Behind him, we spoke to Bruce Novak.

He said he came out for closing weekend because he loves Landmark Theaters.

“I do understand that it’s a question of money and real estate value — and good things can’t last forever,” he said. “It’s sad.”

Two bearded men look right at the camera. People wait in line behind them.
Alex Fountain and Curt Heiner wait in line at the Landmark Esquire Theatre, during the last weekend before its closure. July 12, 2024.
    Kevin J. Beaty/Denverite

Last, we spoke with Kurt Heiner and Alex Fountain, both local projectionists.

Heiner got his start at Landmark Theatres and said he’s been coming to the Esquire his entire life.

“I feel like every cool building and every cool thing is just getting turned into whatever,” he said.

“Cinema history is here. It’s important to keep Denver history alive. But the money is not there, I guess.”

Fountain noted that the Esquire is one of the oldest continually operating theaters in Denver.

“It’s a very sad time,” he said.

Enjoy the Esquire’s final days through Thursday, July 18. The theater is currently screening A Quiet Place: Day One and MaXXXine.

Best Bets: Star-Spangled Salute, To Be or RPG LIVE! and Body Double

    [ad_1]

It’s the weekend to let freedom ring, and we’ve got plenty of Independence Day activities for you to check out, not to mention a little more Americana, including the music of country legends and a classic kids’ baseball film. Once you get your fill of July 4th festivities, we’ve also got an Oscar-winning animated film, a live role-playing game, and an erotic thriller from 1984. Keep reading for more on our picks for this week’s best bets.

If you’re looking for the perfect setting to celebrate Independence Day, may we suggest heading over to the Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens for their annual Fourth of July Celebration on Thursday, July 4, from 1 to 5 p.m. The afternoon of family-friendly festivities includes an art workshop; readings of the Declaration of Independence by actors from Brave Little Company (not to mention the chance to sign the document with a quill pen) and of Faith Ringgold’s We Came to America; costume expert Tommy Attaway talking about what the British and American armies wore and carried during the American Revolution; and live musical performances from acts like the Lonestar Bluegrass Band and the Houston Brass Quintet. Admission to the celebration is free, and be sure to tour the first floor of Bayou Bend while you’re there.

Or, if you’re interested in celebrating Independence Day with the rest of the city, you’ll want to make your way down to Eleanor Tinsley Park on Thursday, July 4, from 4 to 10 p.m. for Freedom Over Texas. The fun includes a dozen acts scheduled for a concert – including Chapel Hart, Jo Dee Messina and headliner Russell Dickerson – which will start at 7 p.m. And because we know this is probably the most important question you’ll have – the fireworks are scheduled to start at approximately 9:35 p.m. Tickets to the festivities are available online here and at the gate for $10 (with kids five and under set to get in free). If you’re not inclined to party with around 50,000 Houstonians, you can also catch the action at home on ABC13.

It’s no secret that the national anthem of the United States is no easy song to perform. For every classic performance, say Whitney Houston at Super Bowl XXV back in 1991, there’s a Kat DeLuna, and a Fergie, and a Christina Aguilera. But if you want to hear a version that won’t disappoint, head out to Miller Outdoor Theatre on Thursday, July 4, at 8:30 p.m. for Star-Spangled Salute. Houston Symphony, at the baton of Conductor Jason Seber, and tenor Rafael Moras will celebrate Independence Day with a program full of patriotic hits, including “God Bless the U.S.A.,” “America the Beautiful” and The Stars and Stripes Forever. Tickets for the free show can be reserved here, but if they’re no longer available, you can always sit on the no-ticket-required Hill.

Hayao Miyazaki, the director of films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away, came out of retirement to make The Boy and the Heron, a film that went on to win this year’s Oscar for Best Animated Film. Though at times an “unwieldy tale of a 12-year-old boy coming to terms with his mother’s death,” the film is “a strikingly beautiful, densely detailed fantasy,” and you can catch it on Friday, July 5, at 7 p.m. at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Additional screenings are scheduled for Saturday, July 6, and Thursday, July 11, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, July 7, at 2 p.m. Note that the July 7 showing will be dubbed in English while all the other screenings will be in Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets to any of them are available here for $7 to $9.

If you’re one of the many fans of the role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons, but you sometimes find it lacking in Shakespearean characters and references, Classical Theatre Company (CTC) has been answering your prayers Monday nights on Twitch during To Be or RPG. The livestreamed D&D play series features regulars from CTC with an added theatrical flair befitting the company’s focus on classics (with proceeds benefitting the company). The cast and crew will open season two of the series in-person and in front of a live audience on Saturday, July 6, at 8 p.m. with To Be or RPG LIVE! at The DeLUXE Theater. And don’t worry – no experience with D&D or season one of the web series is needed to enjoy the show (or the drinks, which will be provided by Saint Arnold Brewing Company). Tickets are available here for $8.

We wouldn’t want to try picking the best country artist of all time, though Rolling Stone certainly did when they put together their list of the “100 Greatest Country Artists of All Time.” On Saturday, July 6, at 8:30 p.m. you can hear classics from some of those “one-of-a-kind” list-makers– like Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash and Hank Williams – when the Houston Symphony returns to Miller Outdoor Theatre for The Legends of Country. The concert, which will also include music from more contemporary artists like Carrie Underwood and Faith Hill, will also feature the vocal talents of Patrick Thomas (The Voice) and Rachel Potter (The X Factor). The show is free and you can reserve tickets here starting on Friday, July 5, at 10 a.m. As always, no tickets required to sit on the Hill.

What better way to commemorate America’s birthday weekend than with a 31-year-old cult classic about America’s pastime? The one that includes the classic line, “You’re killing me, Smalls!” We are, of course, talking about The Sandlot, a “nostalgic tale of a group of boys playing baseball and hanging out in the summer of 1962” written by David Mickey Evans (also the director) and Robert Gunter. The 1993 film “became a beloved hit on VHS cassette and television” and “a pop-culture staple of the 1990s,” one that is “quotable,” “memorable” and “re-watchable.” On Sunday, July 7, at 8 p.m. you can catch a screening of the film over at Home Run Dugout-Katy – and the best part? The screening is free.

Filmmaker Brian De Palma is widely considered one of the great auteurs of the 1970s, so when he set out to make “the most erotic and surprising and thrilling movie I know how to make,” of course he succeeded. The New York Times said of the resulting film, Body Double from 1984, that De Palma “goes too far, which is the reason to see it,” saying the unapologetic homage to Alfred Hitchcock is “sexy and explicitly crude, entertaining and sometimes very funny.” On Wednesday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m., you can catch De Palma’s “exhilarating exercise in pure filmmaking” on the big screen when Alamo Drafthouse shows the film as part of their Film Club, meaning you can stay after for an optional group discussion about the movie. Tickets can be purchased here for $11.

  • Free Will Astrology (July 3-9)

    Free Will Astrology (July 3-9)

    [ad_1]

ARIES (March 21-April 19): The “nirvana fallacy” is the belief that because something is less than utterly perfect, it is gravely defective or even irredeemably broken. Wikipedia says, “The nirvana fallacy compares actual things with unrealistic, idealized alternatives.” Most of us are susceptible to this flawed approach to dealing with the messiness of human existence. But it’s especially important that you avoid such thinking in the coming weeks. To inspire you to find excellence and value in the midst of untidy jumbles and rumpled complexities, I recommend you have fun with the Japanese concept of wabi-sabi. It prizes and praises the soulful beauty found in things that are irregular, incomplete, and imperfect.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You are coming to a fork in the road — a crux where two paths diverge. What should you do? Author Marie Forleo says, “When it comes to forks in the road, your heart always knows the answer, not your mind.” Here’s my corollary: Choose the path that will best nourish your soul’s desires. Now here’s your homework, Taurus: Contact your Future Self in a dream or meditation and ask that beautiful genius to provide you with a message and a sign. Plus, invite them to give you a wink with either the left eye or right eye.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Last year, you sent out a clear message to life requesting help and support. It didn’t get the response you wished for. You felt sad. But now I have good news. One or both of the following may soon occur. 1. Your original message will finally lead to a response that buoys your soul. 2. You will send out a new message similar to the one in 2023, and this time you will get a response that makes you feel helped and supported. Maybe you didn’t want to have to be so patient, Gemini, but I’m glad you refused to give up hope.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): The Fates have authorized me to authorize you to be bold and spunky. You have permission to initiate gutsy experiments and to dare challenging feats. Luck and grace will be on your side as you consider adventures you’ve long wished you had the nerve to entertain. Don’t do anything risky or foolish, of course. Avoid acting like you’re entitled to grab rewards you have not yet earned. But don’t be self-consciously cautious or timid, either. Proceed as if help and resources will arrive through the magic of your audacity. Assume you will be able to summon more confidence than usual.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): All of us, including me, have aspects of our lives that are stale or unkempt, even decaying. What would you say is the most worn-out thing about you? Are there parts of your psyche or environment that would benefit from a surge of clean-up and revival? The coming weeks will be an excellent time to attend to these matters. You are likely to attract extra help and inspiration as you make your world brighter and livelier. The first rule of the purgation and rejuvenation process: Have fun!

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): On those rare occasions when I buy furniture from online stores, I try hard to find sources that will send me the stuff already assembled. I hate spending the time to put together jumbles of wood and metal. More importantly, I am inept at doing so. In alignment with astrological omens, I recommend you take my approach in regard to every situation in your life during the coming weeks. Your operative metaphor should be this: Whatever you want or need, get it already fully assembled.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): When Adragon De Mello was born under the sign of Libra in 1976, his father had big plans for him. Dad wanted him to get a PhD in physics by age 12, garner a Nobel Prize by 16, get elected President of the United States by 26, and then become head of a world government by 30. I’d love for you to fantasize about big, unruly dreams like that in the coming weeks — although with less egotism and more amusement and adventurousness. Give yourself a license to play with amazing scenarios that inspire you to enlarge your understanding of your own destiny. Provide your future with a dose of healing wildness.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): “Your horoscopes are too complicated,” a reader named Estelle wrote to me recently. “You give us too many ideas. Your language is too fancy. I just want simple advice in plain words.” I wrote back to tell her that if I did what she asked, I wouldn’t be myself. “Plenty of other astrologers out there can meet your needs,” I concluded. As for you, dear Scorpio, I think you will especially benefit from influences like me in the coming weeks — people who appreciate nuance and subtlety, who love the poetry of life, who eschew clichés and conventional wisdom, who can nurture your rich, spicy, complicated soul.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): The coming weeks will be prime time for you to re-imagine the history of your destiny. How might you do that? In your imagination, revisit important events from the past and reinterpret them using the new wisdom you’ve gained since they happened. If possible, perform any atonement, adjustment, or intervention that will transform the meaning of what happened once upon a time. Give the story of your life a fresh title. Rename the chapters. Look at old photos and videos and describe to yourself what you know now about those people and situations that you didn’t know back then. Are there key events from the old days that you have repressed or ignored? Raise them up into the light of consciousness.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In 1972, before the internet existed, Capricorn actor Anthony Hopkins spent a day visiting London bookstores in search of a certain tome: The Girl from Petrovka. Unable to locate a copy, he decided to head home. On the way, he sat on a random bench, where he found the original manuscript of The Girl of Petrovka. It had been stolen from the book’s author George Feifer and abandoned there by the thief. I predict an almost equally unlikely or roundabout discovery or revelation for you in the coming days. Prediction: You may not unearth what you’re looking for in an obvious place, but you will ultimately unearth it.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Aquarius-born Desmond Doss (1919–2006) joined the American army at the beginning of World War II. But because of his religious beliefs, he refused to use weapons. He became a medic who accompanied troops to Guam and the Philippines. During the next few years, he won three medals of honor, which are usually given solely to armed combatants. His bravest act came in 1944, when he saved the lives of 70 wounded soldiers during a battle. I propose we make him your inspirational role model for the coming weeks, Aquarius. In his spirit, I invite you to blend valor and peace-making. Synergize compassion and fierce courage. Mix a knack for poise and healing with a quest for adventure.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): What types of people are you most attracted to, Pisces? Not just those you find most romantically and sexually appealing, but also those with whom a vibrant alliance is most gracefully created. And those you’re inclined to seek out for collaborative work and play. This knowledge is valuable information to have; it helps you gravitate toward relationships that are healthy for you. Now and then, though, it’s wise to experiment with connections and influences that aren’t obviously natural — to move outside your usual set of expectations and engage with characters you can’t immediately categorize. I suspect the coming weeks will be one of those times.

Homework: Who is the most important person or animal in your life? I invite you to give them a surprising gift.

The Studio Executive Who Wants Hollywood to Get Real About Bad Storytelling

    [ad_1]

    That’s fair.

When you think about building stories from multiple audiences, not just audiences of color, but also queer audiences, disabled audiences, female audiences, I mean, we’re seeing so much evidence at the box office lately suggesting how difficult it is to construct a hit that isn’t a hit with BIPOC and female audiences. Unfortunately, we don’t have as much data on queer and disabled audiences from a box office perspective, but everything that I’m reading tells me that as those audiences become more vocal it is impossible to build a hit without them.

When we say we are trying to broaden the commercial appeal, it’s really trying to give you a lot of different entry points into different audiences from a more authentic point of view. So that when they see that character in the movie trailer, they feel as if real thought went into it as opposed to what feels like more surface-level or token representation that doesn’t really yield what you’re looking for.

What would you say to someone who calls Story Spark another AI tool studios are forcing on an already fractured industry?

There is no AI involved in Story Spark whatsoever. The only thing that is at work is your brain.

    The original AI.

Right. Actual intelligence. One thing from my time in tech was learning how to build scalable solutions that people can use. You are not uploading a script. You are taking a script that you know well and you’re asking yourself a set of questions about it or you’re asking your creative collaborators a set of questions about it. To the idea of studios forcing things onto a fractured marketplace, I think that one of the lessons for me coming out of the strikes is that consumers are extremely discerning and part of the role studios play in a good partnership with a storyteller is finding those places of positive construction, debate, and dialogue. If the studio exec agrees with everything and has no notes, it’s probably not gonna be the best movie it could be. The same with storytellers—you don’t have to take every note, but you can’t take no notes.

Because if you don’t, what happens?

In my opinion, there would be nothing worse than showing up on opening weekend and all of a sudden there are narratives connected to your movie that never came up in development. We want to take that off the table and front-load those conversations.

Story Spark isn’t AI, but AI is coming for Hollywood regardless. OpenAI is courting many of the big studios with Sora, a text-driven video generator. Many filmmakers have strong reservations about the use of AI and its consequences. Would you say those reservations are justified?

What has always happened as new technologies come online is that there is the immediate sort of, Oh my god, VCRs mean that no one’s ever gonna go to the movies again. And then we realized, no, we actually still like going out and doing those things. Streaming means albums will never be listened to again. And it’s like, no, actually, we still enjoy listening to an artist’s work from start to finish. That’s how I listened to Cowboy Carter and to Renaissance. While the fear is reasonable, I think that it will create really smart limits.

    How so?

We as humans, but also as creatives, have always been able to navigate and to leverage to our benefit, whatever these different technologies are. I don’t see any evidence that AI will be significantly different from that in the long run. For people on the studio side and on the creative side—and anywhere in between—my invitation would be to think about how AI is a tool in the tool kit, but it never replaces the person holding the tool. Because we have knives, does it mean we are useless now? No. I can cut those things faster instead of having to rip the chicken apart. I’m still a chef.

Analog Photography: The Beginner’s Guide to Film Cameras

    [ad_1]

We’ll start with color film, which comes in two flavors, positive and negative.

    Positive Film vs. Negative Film

Positive film records the image as you saw it when you pushed the shutter. It produces rich, saturated colors and tends to have strong contrast. It’s much less forgiving in my experience. You need to get the exposure right and there’s not much you can do about it after the fact if you don’t. I tend to avoid high-contrast scenes with positive film (or use graduated neutral-density filters to reduce contrast). Positive film is usually mounted as slides when you have it professionally developed.

Negative film records the opposite of what you saw. In black and white, everything is reversed, blacks are white, and whites are black so that when you shine light through it to print, the black areas hold back the light, making them lighter in the print, and light areas let more light through, rendering them dark in the print. The same is true of color negative film, but it tends to look more like a yellow-orange mess as a negative. Negative color film often has a softer look than color positive, with lower contrast, and higher dynamic range.

Which should you use? I suggest experimenting to see which you like the best. Below are a few film recommendations based on the type of images you want to make.

    Best Film for Landscapes

    Best Overall

    Fujifilm Fujichrome Velvia 50

Fujifilm’s Fujichrome Velvia 50 is ridiculously expensive at $30 per roll, but I’ve still yet to find any other color-positive film that looks as good as Velvia. Its color saturation is legendary (tending toward the red/magenta), and its neutral gray balance means you almost never get weird colors in shadows and highlights. The price means I don’t shoot it very often, but when I’m heading out into the wilderness, this is what I bring.

    Runner-Up

Kodak Professional Ektachrome E100 Color Transparency Film

Kodak’s E100 is a new film for me, but I’ve shot a few rolls now, and I can say that it is very different from Velvia. There’s none of the Velvia warmth; colors are rather neutral with a mild green cast to the highlights. If you’re looking to shoot landscapes with a different look than the past 50 years of Velvia-influenced images, this is the film I’d recommend.

    Budget Pick

Kodak Professional Ektar 100 Color Negative Film

This is another new one for me; I have shot only two rolls of this color-negative film, but so far, my overwhelming impression is that this is film stock that replicates what you get with a digital camera. Grain is very fine, and colors are extremely close to what my Sony digital sensor records: natural-looking color tending toward the cooler side. I’ll confess I didn’t like it the first time I saw the results, but it’s growing on me, and the price is difficult to beat.

    Best Film for Portraits

Kodak Professional Portra 160 Color Negative Film

Portrait films need to handle skin tones well. My favorite, Fujifilm’s 160 Pro, has been discontinued, which leaves the ever-popular Kodak alternative. At $14 a roll, this is probably the best value in film, period. Porta 160 is a great film for portraits, rendering skin pretty much as it is most of the time. If you need something faster for shooting in low light, there’s also a 400-speed version and even an 800-speed version. I find that one to have too much grain for color portraits, but if that’s the look you want, it’s available.

    Best Black-and-White Films

There’s a seemingly endless array of black-and-white films out there, including reissued versions of some of the most popular films from previous decades. This is a very biased list since “best” in this case is purely subjective. Again, experiment to figure out which you like.

    Best Overall

Kodak Professional Tri-X 400 Black and White Negative Film

Tri-X was launched in the 1940s and has been in continuous production ever since. It’s gone through a few changes over the years, the latest being a reengineering in 2011 that reduced the grain (which is when it got the TX designation). A favorite of photographers as diverse as Sebastiao Salgado, Vivian Mayer, and Gary Winogrand, Tri-X is beloved for its versatility, with just the right amount of grain and contrast that give images a certain look and texture that nothing else matches. There are rich black shadows, great contrast, and enough grain without being too much. Tri-X is also dead simple to process if you do it yourself. If I could only shoot one film, this would be it.

    Runner-Up

Ilford HP5 Plus Black and White Negative Film

Another versatile film, Ilford’s HP5 has a wide exposure latitude, meaning it’ll do well in mixed and difficult lighting. It has less overall contrast than Tri-X, giving it a smoother look. It also pushes very well, without becoming overly grainy like Tri-X tends to when you push it. If you want a good all-around film with a smooth, even tonality, this is a good pick.

    Best for Low Light

Kodak Professional T-Max P3200 Black and White Negative Film

Let’s get something out of the way first. Kodak calls this a “multispeed” film; there’s no need to shoot it at 3200. I like to shoot it at 800 and process it at 1600. It took me a few years to realize what I was doing there was making my T-Max look more like Tri-X, but the point is, the T-Max 3200 is more versatile than the speed implies. That said, I tend to reach for this when shooting in the evenings or out at night.

    Developing Film

There used to be a film development lab on every street corner. Or at least in those little kiosks in parking lots, but those days are gone. That said, there are plenty of professional labs out there with mail-order businesses and quick turnaround times. Most of them will be happy to scan your negatives as well, though this does add to the cost.

There are hundreds of good labs out there, and your best bet is to go to the photography store nearest you and talk to them. Building a relationship at your local photo shop will help you get better results, because they’ll know what you like and what you don’t and can help you push and pull and communicate with the lab as needed. That said, many camera stores have outsourced their development to big online services (the store nearest me sends film off to Nation’s lab), so make sure you ask where they’re developing.

    What Are Dating Sites?

Dating sites are online platforms that help singles connect with potential partners. These websites and apps offer various tools and features to help you meet people based on your preferences. They also help you build relationships, whether you’re into casual dating or serious relationships.

    How Do Dating Sites Work?

Most dating apps and websites require you to create a profile with personal info and preferences. They use algorithms to match you with others based on compatibility, interests, and location. Features like messaging, video calls, and virtual gifts make interacting with potential matches easier.

    Paid vs. Free Dating Sites

Here are the significant differences between Paid vs. Free dating apps and sites.

    Paid dating sites:

    • Offer advanced matchmaking algorithms.
    • Provide more features like personality tests and compatibility assessments.
    • Often, they have better security measures to protect user data.
    • May offer better customer support.
    • Usually attracts users seeking serious relationships.
    • Require a subscription fee or payment for premium features.
    • Generally, they have a smaller but more engaged user base.

    Free dating sites:

    • Have a more extensive user base due to accessibility.
    • Can be full of inactive or fake profiles.
    • Rely on advertisements for revenue.
    • May lack advanced matchmaking algorithms.
    • Often used for casual dating or hookups.
    • Provide basic features without requiring payment.
    • Tend to have fewer privacy controls.
    • Might offer limited customer support options.

How to Avoid Fake Dating Profiles and Scams

Online dating can be exciting, but it’s essential to stay vigilant. Here are some key tips to protect yourself from fake profiles and scams.

    Use Secure Payment Methods

Always use secure payment methods for subscriptions or in-app purchases. Avoid using direct bank transfers or other non-traceable methods. This will help you protect your financial information.

    Watch Out for Red Flags

Be cautious of profiles with limited information, overly flattering messages, or requests for money. Always trust your instincts and proceed with caution if something feels off.

    Verify Profiles

Look for verified profiles or use platforms offering profile verification features. Verified profiles usually have a badge indicating their authenticity.

    Report Suspicious Activity

Most dating platforms have features to report suspicious profiles or activities. By reporting, you help maintain the safety and integrity of the dating community.

    Choose Reputable Dating Platforms

Stick to well-known and reputable dating sites with good user reviews and security measures. These platforms invest in safety features to protect their users.

    Use Reverse Image Search

Use reverse image search to check if a profile picture is used elsewhere on the internet. This can help you identify potential catfishers.

    Avoid Sharing Personal Information

Never share personal information like your address, financial details, or other sensitive data. Protect your privacy until you feel confident in your connection.

What to Consider When Choosing the Best Dating Sites

Choosing the right dating site can significantly impact your online dating experience. Here are some key factors to remember when selecting the best dating apps for you.

    Privacy and Safety Features

Ensure the platform values your privacy and has robust safety features like profile verification. This ensures your personal information stays secure.

    Cost and Payment Options

Consider your budget and the payment options available. While some of the best dating apps require a subscription, free dating apps can also offer limited features.

Features and Functionality of the Site

Look for user-friendly interfaces, efficient matchmaking algorithms, and efficient features. These can make your dating experience more enjoyable and effective.

    Matching Algorithms

Effective matching algorithms can significantly enhance your online dating experience. They help suggest compatible matches based on your preferences and behavior. The better the algorithm, the higher your chances of finding a good match.

    Success Stories and Reputation

Research the platform’s reputation and read success stories from other users. Positive testimonials can give you confidence in the site’s ability to help you find a meaningful connection.

  • What will the Explore Minnesota Film Office mean for the state’s economy?

What will the Explore Minnesota Film Office mean for the state’s economy?

    [ad_1]

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Minnesota’s been a popular place to shoot movies and TV shows over the years, but the state may soon become even more of a destination for Hollywood.

The Explore Minnesota Film Office will be created this summer as a branch of the state’s tourism office. It will be fully dedicated to attracting film and television productions.

“All these people [in the entertainment industry] are really excited, because it is transformational,” said Casey Lewis, the president of the Twin Cities Local chapter of SAG-AFTRA.

Lewis says when a movie shoots in Minnesota, it’s like an army coming and making camp.

It can mean millions of dollars for the local economy.

“That’s going to wages for Minnesota workers,” Melodie Bahan, the executive director of the nonprofit, MN Film and TV. “It’s going to hotels and housing, equipment rentals. It’s going to things that are in Minnesota — vendors and small businesses.”

For many years, MN Film and TV has done the work the new Explore Minnesota office will do. Bahan says having the office associated with the state will make the process of attracting productions more seamless and less confusing.

The office will promote Minnesota to Hollywood producers and administer tax credits already in place for incentivizing production.

“[It’ll] help filmmakers, producers, studios, and networks with locations, with crew,” Bahan said. “Kind of easing the path, helping them navigate various municipalities and permitting and all of that stuff.”

Lewis says Minnesota has tens of millions of dollars in tax credits to give out, and coming out of last year’s writers and actors strikes, he expects Minnesota to be an appealing destination.

“There’s so many projects in the pipeline that have been backed up, they’re going to be looking for places to shoot,” Lewis said. “They can’t all shoot in Los Angeles.”

Bahan says a feature film is already slated to shoot here this winter because it needs frozen lakes.

  • Best Bets: Barricade Boys, mutability and Apollo 10 ½

Best Bets: Barricade Boys, mutability and Apollo 10 ½

    [ad_1]

We’re officially into June, and the month of June – if you didn’t know – is National Outdoors Month. There’s been very little reason to want to be outdoors so far this month, so rest assured that most of this week’s best bets will keep you in a nice, air-conditioned, rain-free building. Keep reading for our picks, which include jazzy films, glow-in-the-dark art, and a “scandal” at the Symphony.

The Barricade Boys are coming to the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts on Thursday, June 6, at 7 p.m. to sing songs from musicals like Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera and Wicked, as well as pop tunes, Motown hits and even “Bohemian Rhapsody” during for The Barricade Boys West End Party! Barricade Boys Kieran Brown and Scott Garnham recently described their show to Broadway World Houston, with Brown saying the set is a mix “of pretty much everything” and Garnham noting that it’s “called a Broadway party, and there’s a reason for that,” adding that they want “people to come and get involved” with singing, dancing and cheering. The show will be performed a second time at 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 7. Tickets for either performance can be purchased here for $54 to $124.

Houston Ballet’s latest mixed repertory program, Four Seasons, will open on Thursday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. with dance works from George Balanchine, Disha Zhang, Dwight Rhoden and Stanton Welch, whose “The Four Seasons” will feature a familiar face. Former principal dancer and current ballet master Amy Fote, whose role in Welch’s work marks her return to dancing on the Houston Ballet stage after more than ten years, recently told the Houston Press that the ballet tells “one woman’s story through…four different artists who dance each of the seasons,” and that it’s “quite a special story with iconic, lovely music.” Performances will continue at 7:30 p.m. Saturdays and June 8, and 2 p.m. Sundays through June 16 at the Wortham Theater Center. Tickets can be purchased here for $25 to $215.

Did you know that Vaseline and ripe bananas glow blue under a black light? A black light emits ultraviolet light and those things that glow under it are called phosphors, and phosphors will be all over Hardy & Nance Studios on Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m. when Insomnia Gallery presents Near Dark: A Black Light Art Show. The all-ages-welcome, free show is returning for the fifth time, so get ready to enjoy work – all fluorescent – from local artists. Get in on the fun and deck yourself out in neon colors or be ready to glow yourself up with highlighters that will be provided on-site. Food trucks will also be present, and Eureka Heights Brewing Company, Bad Astronaut Brewing Co., Equal Parts Brewing and City Orchard will be pouring the (free) drinks.

A restoration of Bruce Weber’s 1988 documentary Let’s Get Lost, a “shimmeringly decadent and fascinating portrait of the West Coast jazz legend Chet Baker,” will open Jazz on Film, a films series curated by Peter Lucas at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston on Friday, June 7, at 7 p.m. Over three weekends, the series will feature films that sit at the intersection of jazz and cinema, including the Houston premiere of Elis and Tom, about the 1974 collaboration between Brazilian artists Antonio Carlos Jobim and Elis Regina; a special 50th anniversary screening of Afrofuturist classic, Sun Ra’s Space Is the Place; two short documentaries focusing on women (International Sweethearts of Rhythm and Maxine Sullivan: Love to Be in Love) and more. You can view the full schedule here and also get individual tickets for $7 to $9.

Haruki Murakami’s literary “world is an allegorical one,” making him “arguably the most experimental Japanese novelist to have been translated into English” as well as “the most popular, with sales in the millions worldwide.” The latest program from ISHIDA Dance Company, mutability, includes two original works from Brett Ishida, one of which is the women-centric “green apples” and the second, which lends its name to the program, draws inspiration from Murakami. In true ISHIDA fashion, the program, which opens at Asia Society Texas on Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m., will also include works from international guest choreographers that you are unlikely to see anywhere else in the U.S. The program will also be performed at 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, and 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Tickets can be purchased here for $40 to $120.

Kaiser Wilhelm II famously lamented Richard Strauss’s “scandalousSalome, an opera based on Oscar Wilde’s equally “scandalous” play, fearing it would do Strauss “a lot of damage.” Instead, “Salome played to sold out opera houses around the world,” and on Friday, June 7, at 8 p.m. the Houston Symphony will produce the opera with costumes, projections, lighting and more during the Strauss Festival: Salome in Concert at Jones Hall. Soprano Jennifer Holloway will sing the title role in the opera, which includes the (in)famous “Dance of the Seven Veils,” which Salome performs in exchange for anything she wants – and what she wants is the head of John the Baptist. Salome will be performed a second time on Sunday, June 9, at 7 p.m. Tickets for either can be purchased here for $34 to $125.

Get a taste of Caribbean and Latin American culture, including the music of Argentina’s most iconic dance and Venezuela’s most traditional (and national) dance, without blowing your savings on a roundtrip plane ticket at Miller Outdoor Theatre on Saturday, June 8, at 8:30 p.m. during Tango, Joropo, Danzas y Mas! produced by Aperio, Music of the Americas. Conductor Marlon Chen of the Manila Symphony Orchestra will lead Aperio’s ensemble, which will be joined by clarinetist Ernesto Vega, Venezuelan violinist Eddy Marcano and tango pianist Pablo Estigarribia. As with all shows at Miller, the program is free, and you can reserve tickets here starting at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 7, or you can take a seat on the no-ticket-required Hill.

Experience the summer of 1969 and the days leading up to the moon landing through the eyes of a Houston fourth grader named Stan in Richard Linklater’s Apollo 10 ½: A Space Age Childhood, an animated coming-of-age film that will screen on the lawn outside The Menil Collection’s main building on Saturday, June 8, at 8:30 p.m. The film, co-presented with Friends of River Oaks Theatre, is “a lively and charming stroll down memory lane,” one loosely based on Linklater’s own childhood with a “meticulous sense of detail” and “tolerant, easygoing spirit.” The event is free, and before the film at 8:30 p.m., you can enjoy music by DJ Vincent Priceless at 7:30 p.m. and remarks by the film’s co-producer, Craig Staggs, at 8:15 p.m. (and don’t forget to bring a picnic blanket).

Best Bets: Madame Butterfly, Plantasia and Love, Loss, and What I Wore

    [ad_1]

Do you want to do something good for your neighbor? Of course, you do – it’s National Do Something Good for Your Neighbor Day. Our suggestion is to kindly invite your neighbor to one of this week’s best bets. Below, you can find our picks, which include film festivals, an opera outdoors, a botanical art show and more.

The 17th Annual Palestine Film Festival will open on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. with a screening of Lina Soualem’s “festival favorite,” Bye Bye Tiberias, at Rice Cinema. In the film, the filmmaker tells the story of “her maternal relatives,” including her mother, the Palestinian actress Hiam Abbass, in hope of answering “the question ‘How does a woman find her place when caught between worlds?’” Each of the six features spotlighted throughout the three-day festival, which runs through May 19, will be preceded by a short film, and Bye Bye Tiberias will follow a reception beginning at 6:30 p.m. You may view the full lineup here and tickets to any of the screenings can also be purchased here for $10.

A couple unable to conceive is diagnosed with a rather unique, newly identified syndrome, one which can only be cured by locating everyone the two have ever had sex with and having sex with them again. This is “the quirky premise” of The (Ex)perience of Love (Le syndrome des amours passées), which will open Five Funny French Films at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, on Friday, May 17, at 7 p.m. The film, directed by Raphaël Balboni and Ann Sirot, is the first of five curated comedies from France that make up the twelfth annual edition of the festival, which runs all weekend through Sunday, May 19. Tickets to any of the screenings can be found here for $8 to $10, as can the full lineup.

Kinetic Ensemble will close their season on Friday,

Kinetic Ensemble will close out their season on Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the MATCH with a program titled At Play. The program not only features special guest Frame Dance Productions, but all the composers selected for the evening are living, American composers of marginalized identities. Cellist Patricia Ryan recently told the Houston Press as much as the ensemble loves “playing the old canon of Beethoven and Mozart, who still have relevance today, there’s something that’s really more tangible for us to play pieces by current, living composers, especially now that there’s an opportunity for previously marginalized groups who are able to now get the support and exposure that they deserve.” Tickets to the program can be purchased here for $15 to $30.

In 1995, Ilene Beckerman published a “captivating little pictorial autobiography for adults, a life told through clothes,” that was also “a wry commentary on the pressures women constantly face to look good.” Nora Ephron and sister Delia Ephron turned the book into a 2008 play – featuring a series of monologues and ensemble scenes that reference those sartorial touchstones (from bras to prom dresses) – of the same name, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, which On The Verge Theatre will open at The Alta Arts on Friday, May 17, at 7:30 p.m. Performances are scheduled to run through June 9 at 7:30 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Monday, June 3, and at 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets to the play can be purchased here for $30 to $40.

This weekend it’s the Houston Grand Opera’s turn to take the stage at Miller Outdoor Theatre when HGO brings their production of Giacomo Puccini’s Madame Butterfly to Miller on Friday, May 17, at 8 p.m. The production of the classic opera, which was previously performed at the Wortham Theater Center earlier this year, became one of the company’s top-selling shows of that last ten years. As always, shows at Miller are free, and you can get reserve a ticket here starting at 10 a.m. today, Thursday, May 16, or you can head for the seating on the no-ticket-required Hill. Madame Butterfly will be performed a second time on Saturday, May 18, at 8 p.m. You can reserve a seat for Saturday beginning on Friday, May 17, at 10 a.m. here.

A galaxy far, far away comes to Jones Hall on Friday, May 17, at 8 p.m. when the Houston Symphony presents The Music of Star Wars. Conductor Steven Reineke will lead the Symphony through music from all nine films (the trilogy of trilogies which all feature works from noted composer John Williams) – in chronological order – along with selections from the standalone “Star Wars Story” films, Rogue One and Solo. The concert will also be performed in-hall at 2:30 and 8 p.m. Saturday, May 18, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, May 19. In-hall tickets are available here for $48.88 to $170. The Saturday evening performance will also be livestreamed, and access to the livestream can be purchased here for $20.

Did you know that we get 60 percent of “our energy intake from just three plant species”? Those would be rice, wheat and maize, if you’re wondering. The point is, there’s a lot to appreciate about not only plants, but flowers, fungi and more, and you can celebrate these and the beauty of the botanical world on Saturday, May 18, from 5 to 9 p.m. when Hardy & Nance Studios presents Plantasia: A Botanical Art Show. The curated show will feature work in various mediums in 2D and 3D formats from artists all around Houston (and the surrounding area). Also, on hand for the third annual botany-appreciating art show will be Eden Plant Co. as well as food from Chicano BBQ. You can attend the art show for free.

Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s Taking Steps, a two-act play set more than 50 years ago in a former-brothel-turned-possibly-haunted-house, will officially open at Main Street Theater on Saturday, May 18, at 7:30 p.m. Callina Anderson, whose character Elizabeth is the wife of a man thinking of buying the house, recently told the Houston Press that the play “is about what people are trying to get toward, to work toward, like a relationship or career,” adding that “the script is really funny” and that anyone who “wants a laugh” should see the show. Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. through June 15. Tickets can be purchased here for $35 to $59.

  • Matthew Stafford documentary looks at Rams quarterback’s life on and off the field

Matthew Stafford documentary looks at Rams quarterback’s life on and off the field

    [ad_1]

LOS ANGELES (KABC) — The Los Angeles Rams won a Super Bowl with Matthew Stafford at quarterback, and they hope to get there again this season.

As Stafford heads into his fourth season with the team, a new documentary showcases Stafford’s life on and off the field.

“Football is not for everybody. I love the challenge. It’s not easy. It’s hard,” Stafford said in a clip from the documentary.

The Rams are giving fans an inside look into the star quarterback’s life in a new documentary, “Mathew Stafford: Locked In.” The film explores the pressure of the playoffs last season and facing off against his former team.

Stafford typically stays out of the spotlight, but this new documentary pulls the curtain back to let fans see his life both on and off the field as a player, husband and father.

The film’s director, Justin Polks, says there’s an overall theme of the noise vs. quiet in this documentary. As a quarterback, Stafford is dealing with coaches in his ear, football players, plays being called but before that snap on the field, he learns to tune it out and lock in.

“It started off with ‘let’s just show the two games in five days.’ There’s a game on a Sunday and a game on a Thursday. How do football players deal with that? How does Matthew Stafford himself deal with that?” Polks said. “And then from there it kind of took on a life of its own.

The Rams ultimately lost to the Detroit Lions in the playoffs, but it came down to the wire and the Rams gave it their all. The film shows you the moments during the game, after the loss and how Stafford’s leadership played a role.

You can watch the documentary on the Rams’ website.

Sung in English with projected English text, the co-production with The Glimmerglass Festival will be directed by Francesca Zambello with HGO’s own chorus director, Richard Bado, conducting. Elizabeth Bunch, member of the Alley Theatre‘s Resident Acting Company and director of 4th Wall’s production, recently told the Houston Press that “the structure of the play not only leaves you with doubts about the narrator but doubts as an audience member about what you’ve seen, about what is true and not true,” adding “that ultimately you have to understand the play with your heart instead of your mind.” Performances will continue at 7:30 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays and May 6, 3 p.m. Sundays and 2:30 p.m. May 11 at Spring Street Studio through May 11. Tickets are available here for $25 to $60, with the Monday, May 6, performance being pay-what-you-will starting at $5 at the door and $10 online.

It was in March 1934 that composer Carl Orff chose 24 poems from “an anthology of medieval poetry in Latin” and framed them by “O Fortuna,” which is “a fatalistic chorus in praise of Fortune, the cruel goddess who brings both pleasure and suffering” and “the most famous part” of Orff’s resulting work Carmina burana. On Friday, April 26, at 8 p.m. the Houston Symphony will present Carmina burana, along with a world premiere by Jimmy López Bellido, at Jones Hall. The concert will also be performed on Saturday, April 27, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 28, at 2:30 p.m. Saturday night’s concert will also be livestreamed and access can be purchased here for $20. It was in “a secondhand store in Los Angeles in 1942 or 1943” that Stravinsky, who would become a U.S. citizen with his second wife Vera in 1945, found “some Masses of Mozart,” which he described as “rococo-operatic sweets-of-sin,” and decided write a mass of his own. We’ve compiled the 15 most lovable scary movie potheads from Chucky to Cabin Fever. All in celebration of those drug addicts that may or may not be gutted by the end of the film. Please enjoy.

‘Field of Dreams’ turns 35 and we’d be remiss if we didn’t highlight the cast then vs. now

    [ad_1]

Field of Dreams was released on April, 21st 1989. The film will celebrate its 35th anniversary this year. That’s over three decades of being the greatest baseball movie ever made. There, I said it. It’s got everything. Drama, fantasy, comedy, time-travel. My apologies to The Sandlot…I still love you.

Maybe it’s because my dad and I both cherish baseball as a sport. When I was little he loaded up our minivan and took me and my stepbrother on a roadtrip from Pennsylvania all the way to Dyersville, Iowa just so we could hit balls at the real Field of Dreams. It’s an experience I’ll never forget.

We wanted to revisit this movie and the iconic cast who made it what it is today. Please, enjoy!
