  • FIFA World Cup 2022: Neymar’s doppelganger steals the thunder as he poses with fans in Qatar

FIFA World Cup 2022: Neymar’s doppelganger steals the thunder as he poses with fans in Qatar

Brazilian football star Neymar Jr’s doppelganger was wandering through the World Cup village garnering attention of hundreds of fans in Qatar. Eigon Oliveira, the doppelganger, previously attended the group stage match between Brazil and Switzerland. He was swarmed by fans for autographs and taking selfies.

FIFA World Cup 2022 shared a video of the impersonator wherein Oliveira can be seen roaming around the World Cup village. He is surrounded by fans to take pictures. “Not going to lie, I thought it was him too…” the caption read.

The impersonator was seen wearing Neymar’s training suit, sunglasses and cap. In the getup along with beard, it was very difficult to tell that he was not the footballer. The security at the village eventually led Oliveira away as he caught everyone’s attention including the Brazilian players on field.

He shares similar tattoos with Neymar, and has been spotted frequently travelling with a member of the Brazilian soccer federation staff member. It has become more of a job for Oliveira, to play Neymar.

Neymar is back on training ahead of the FIFA World Cup 2022 Round of 16 encounter against South Korea. Last month, Neymar had sustained a foot injury during Brazil’s World Cup opener against Serbia, which left his right foot swollen. Therefore, Neymar was unable to participate in the group-stage games.

Team Brazil defeated Serbia 2-0 guaranteeing the team a place in the Round of 16. Brazil was, however, defeated by Cameroon in the last Group G game, which the African side won 1-0.

  • FIFA World Cups: Lionel Messi scores most goals, overtakes Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo

FIFA World Cups: Lionel Messi scores most goals, overtakes Maradona, Cristiano Ronaldo

Argentine professional footballer Lionel Messi, who played the 1,000th game of his career on Saturday, has gone past Diego Maradona and Cristiano Ronaldo in scoring the most goals in FIFA World Cups.

In the match against Australia in the pre-quarterfinal clash, Messi scored one goal – his ninth overall in World Cups – and led Argentina in their World Cup last 16 clashes. Moreover, this was also the first time that Messi scored a goal in the knockout stage of the FIFA World Cups.

As per the current standings in the FIFA World Cup 2022’s Golden Boot – which is awarded to the player with the most goals in the tournament – Messi stands in second place with three goals in four matches. Spain’s Alvaro Morata holds the top place in the competition for Golden Boot, with 3 goals in three matches.

Messi also won his eighth Man of the Match award in World Cups and surpassed Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has seven trophies in the quadrennial showpiece. Messi also overtook Ronaldo on yet another front with his ninth overall World Cup goal, going past Ronaldo’s eight. This is one more than Diego Maradona.

Diego Maradona played for Argentina between 1977 to 1994 and scored 34 goals. Messi, who is playing his fifth World Cup, has stated that this will be his last, making it all the more important for him to win the trophy if he is to match the legacy of Maradona.

In the 35th minute of the match against Australia, Messi curled a shot past keeper Mat Ryan, marking his third goal in Qatar so far. The 35-year-old Messi, who is already Argentina’s all-time top scorer with 94 goals, was making his 169th appearance for his nation.

With this, Messi also became Barcelona’s top scorer with 672 goals in 778 games. However, he moved to Paris St Germain last year. In total, he has scored 789 career goals. Julian Alvarez doubled Argentina’s lead in the 57th minute and confirmed their win against Australia in the FIFA World Cup 2022.

Post-game, Messi in a media interaction mentioned this particular achievement and said that he is grateful for it. “I am very happy for taking another step forward, achieving another objective,” Messi said.

“It was a very strong and difficult match — we knew it was going to be this way. We didn’t have much time to rest up and we were concerned as we knew it was going to be a physical match and they were very strong,” he added.

Argentina will now face the Netherlands in their quarterfinal clash on Saturday, December 10th.

Belgium-Morocco World Cup match triggers riots in Brussels, dozen people detained

Belgian police detained a dozen people and made one arrest on Sunday after Morocco’s victory over Belgium in the World Cup match in Qatar triggered riots in Brussels with a car and some electric scooters set on fire.

The riots took place in several places across the Belgian capital where dozens of soccer fans, some draped in Moroccan flags, clashed with riot police with water cannons and tear gas.

“Around 7 p.m. calm returned and preventive patrols remain in place in the sectors concerned,” police spokesperson Ilse Van de Keere said.

“The rioters used pyrotechnic material, projectiles, sticks, and set fire on the public highway,” the police said. “Also, a journalist was injured in the face by fireworks. It is for these reasons that it was decided to proceed with a police intervention, with the deployment of water cannon and the use of tear gas,” the police said.

  • FIFA World Cup 2022: Streaming service blocked in Saudi Arabia

FIFA World Cup 2022: Streaming service blocked in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia appears to have arbitrarily blocked access to the FIFA World Cup’s official streaming service, international news agency AFP reported on Sunday. The platform, Tod TV, is run by the Qatari broadcaster beIN Media Group. During a dispute between the two nations, beIN was briefly banned in Saudi Arabia but was allowed back in October 2021.

“Due to matters beyond our control, we are experiencing an outage in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which is currently impacting TOD.tv, the official streaming partner of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. Additional information will be provided as soon as it is available,” beIN said.

Tod TV is the official World Cup streaming service in 24 Middle Eastern and North African countries.

Several Saudi subscribers told AFP on Saturday that they have not been able to access the service since the World Cup began on November 20. “Sorry, the requested page is violating the regulations of the Ministry of Media,” the error message says.

“I want my money,” one subscriber told AFP, adding that attempts to obtain a refund for the service, which costs about 300 Saudi riyals (roughly $80) per month, had been futile.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia orchestrated a regional boycott of Qatar beginning in June 2017, the same month he ascended to the throne. Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, and Egypt severed ties with Doha over allegations that it supported extremists and was too close to Iran.

During the boycott, beIN Media Group was barred from operating in Saudi Arabia.

What is Camel flu? Fifa World Cup fans at risk of catching virus deadlier than Covid: Report

FIFA World Cup 2022: Football fans in Qatar are at risk of catching Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) infection, also known as Camel flu, according to World Health Organization (WHO) experts. Fifa is expected to draw nearly 1.2 million people from around the world and this massive gathering could trigger the spread of the virus.

In a study published in the journal ‘New Microbes and New Infections’, scientists have listed Camel flu as an infection risk during the four-week-long sporting event. Camels are known to be the origin of MERS, which is caused by a coronavirus.

Scientists, as per the study, have found that mass gatherings pose a threat of potential infectious disease spreading rapidly. Considered to be a deadlier cousin of the COVID virus, Camel flu has affected dozens in Qatar over the last decade. The virus kills up to a third of everyone who gets infected.

Apart from Camel flu, football fans are also face potential health-threatening diseases such as cutaneous leishmaniasis, malaria, dengue, rabies, measles, hepatitis A and B and travellers’ diarrhoea.

As per WHO, the Camel flu virus could get transferred to humans from infected dromedary camels. Camel flu has been identified in dromedaries in several countries in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. The WHO also claims that human-to-human transmission is also possible.

Since 2012, 27 countries have reported Camel flu cases, which has led to 858 known deaths due to the infection. Symptoms of Camel flu include fever, cough, and shortness of breath. Currently, there’s no vaccine or specific treatment is available, but are in development.

  • FIFA World Cup 2022: Neymar vows to make comeback in tournament after ankle injury

FIFA World Cup 2022: Neymar vows to make comeback in tournament after ankle injury

After getting dropped from the remaining two World Cup group games due to ankle injury, Brazil star striker and captain Neymar Jr says he is going through “one of the most difficult moments” of his career as an ankle injury threatens to cut his World Cup short.

As per reports, the star attacker was forced off late in his side’s 2-0 win against Serbia, and forced to come back on the Brazil Bench in the 80th minute. Following this, he was even spotted in tears on the Brazil bench. Experts noted that Neymar might miss the remainder of the group stage. Brazil started the FIFA World Cup 2022 campaign as this year’s favourite. Neymar was named one of the top players of the tournament.

The team was on a high after their easy win against Serbia on Friday. Brazil tops Group G and will next face Switzerland and Cameroon.

On Friday, the team’s doctor said that talisman Neymar and ever-reliable full-back Danilo would only miss the Swiss game.

“Neymar and Danilo went through an MRI on Friday afternoon and we found ligament damage in the ankle of both of them. They will miss the next game for sure and we will be cautious as they will undergo treatment in order to try to get them in shape so they can play again in the World Cup,” Rodrigo Lasmar said in a statement shared by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF).

Expressing his displeasure, the top Paris Saint-Germain striker wrote on Instagram: “The pride and love I feel wearing the shirt is unexplainable. If God gave me the opportunity to choose a country to be born in, it would be BRAZIL.”

“Nothing in my life was given or easy, I always had to chase after my dreams and my goals. Never wishing someone harm but helping those in need,” he added.

Vowing to make a quick comeback, Neymar said: “Today has become one of the most difficult moments of my career… and again in a World Cup. I have an injury yes, it’s annoying, it’s going to hurt but I’m sure I’ll have a chance to come back because I’ll do my best to help my country, my companions, and myself.”

In the 2014 World Cup, Neymar was also severely injured before the semi-finals. The 30-year-old left the ground while playing Colombia during the quarter-final encounter.

  • Byju’s co-founder Divya Gokulnath makes a case for India’s FIFA qualification amid backlash over Messi deal

Byju’s co-founder Divya Gokulnath makes a case for India’s FIFA qualification amid backlash over Messi deal

Edtech company Byju’s co-founder Divya Gokulnath has expressed support for India’s qualification for the upcoming FIFA World Cup, saying that the nation has a good chance of making it to the tournament’s final 48 teams.

In a LinkedIn post, Gokulnath wrote, “Too often we find the label ‘pipe dream’ attached to India’s chances of playing in the FIFA World Cup. I beg to disagree. I am sure India will not only qualify for the World Cup; it will also win it at least once in my lifetime.” She also shared a video by Byju’s which is made on the same lines.

On FIFA’s list of nations, India is ranked 106th, just ahead of Sierra Leone and Kosovo and below teams like Cyprus, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau.

The FIFA World Cup 2022, which is being held in Qatar, has awarded Byju’s the prestigious and lucrative sponsorship deal.

Her post comes at a time when the Bengaluru-based company has come under fire for hiring one of the highest-paid footballers in the world, Lionel Messi, as a brand ambassador shortly after firing 2,500 employees in an effort to increase the edtech company’s profitability.

Divya Gokulnath recently spoke to the media about the Messi contract, explaining that the choice to appoint Messi as the global brand ambassador for its “Education For All” social initiative was motivated by a desire to increase the initiative’s visibility and reach.

On layoffs, Gokulnath had said, “How much we say and apologise, it is not enough. It would be the last thing that we would want to do but sometimes what Byju and Divya want is not what Byju’s as a company demands.”

“We did it because this would help us move towards our path to profitability by the fourth quarter of this year. Certain steps had to be taken and they were taken,” she further added.

FIFA World Cup 2022 opening ceremony: Event starts with Arabian theme; Jungkook performs new song ‘Dreamers’

FIFA World Cup 2022 kicked off in Qatar, on Sunday, with a grand opening ceremony that saw international celebrities perform. The event started with American actor Morgan Freeman’s dulcet voice and an Arabian theme with camels.

Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani arrived at the stadium flanked by FIFA president Gianni Infantino to a roaring crowd. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also present at the opening ceremony and inaugural match of the tournament.

The opening show also saw the performance of a new tournament song called ‘Dreamers’ featuring singer Jungkook of K-pop boy band BTS, alongside Qatari singer Fahad Al-Kubaisi. Interestingly, Qatar is also the smallest nation to host soccer’s biggest global event. Crowd control will be key with some 1.2 million visitors expected – more than a third of its population.

A ban on sale of beer was imposed two days before the opening ceremony of the World Cup.However, at the FIFA Fan Festival in central Doha, visitors were seen sipping beers. But the conditions outside the city’s edges were different as hundreds of workers gathered in a sports arena in an industrial zone, without alcohol.

Thousands of attendees were turned away from a Saturday night concert in the official fan zone because of overcrowding. According to the reports, around 1.2 million visitors are expected to begin arriving this week in the tiny nation on the Arabian Peninsula.

Qatar – which is home to 3 million people, mostly migrant workers – has spent more than $200 billion on improvements across the country for the tournament. Among the additions are seven new purpose-built venues, including the 60,000-seat Al Bayt Stadium that hosted Sunday’s opening ceremony and the first match.

‘It’s been hell’: Fifa World Cup about to begin, but Qatar fan villages still look like construction sites

Qatar is decked up to host the opening ceremony of the Fifa World Cup 2022 in a few hours. However, fans have started uploading footage of the hellish conditions in fan villages – a makeshift arrangement to accommodate lakhs of football spectators who have gathered in Qatar.

The fan villages have cabin-style and casual camping and caravan accommodation. They are located in and around the outskirts of Doha and include a variety of on-site facilities as well as a number of food and beverage outlets with a variety of offerings.

While the first match is just hours ago, the fan villages still look like construction sites.

Thousands of England and Wales World Cup fans will be staying at the Rawdat Al Jahhaniya fan village, but footage and pictures have shown piles of debris, torn-up grass, and industrial equipment still present on the scene.

After arriving at a fan park close to Lusail Stadium, some FIFA World Cup visitors had to walk for an hour to find drinking water.

BBC’s Rhia Chohan said that guests slowly checking into a fan village near Lusail Stadium find they can’t buy drinking water without a wristband.

“It’s 30 degrees. Nearest shop an hour walk. No one knows where the wristbands are. We’re told the festival is meant to kick off at 6.30 pm,” she said.

The Guardian reported that promised amenities like a fitness center, theater, and tennis court are also missing.

Small air conditioners inside the cabins can’t cool the area during the day and are too noisy at night to be useful.

One fan who is a writer posted, “You’d think after China and Russia they’d have learned not to hold major sporting events in dictatorships but hey, that’s FIFA for you! Qatari officials are threatening to smash cameras of fans filming the harsh conditions inside the World Cup Fan Village.”

“This is what £185 [$330AUD] a night gets you in the Qatar World Cup fan village. Good luck getting any rest. The noise of the air conditioner [that doesn’t keep the container cool during the day] helps drown out the rest of the racket,” another fan posted.

  • Qatar World Cup 2022: FIFA chief says fans can ‘survive’ without beer for 3 hrs amid ban

Qatar World Cup 2022: FIFA chief says fans can ‘survive’ without beer for 3 hrs amid ban

A day after ban imposed by Qatar, the host of this year’s FIFA World Cup, on sale of beer at the World Cup stadiums, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said that the fans can ‘survive’ without the alcoholic beverage for three hours. The much-awaited football tournament will kick off on November 20, Sunday, where the host nation will take on Ecuador.

Qatar is the first Middle-east nation to host the world cup. The sale of alcohol is strictly controlled in Qatar as drinking in public areas is strictly prohibited. Earlier, official sponsor Budweiser was allowed to sell beer at the Qatar World Cup official venues.

Speaking at the opening press conference in Doha, Infantino said: “We tried until the end to see whether allowing alcohol sales was possible.” “If for three hours a day you cannot drink a beer, you will survive. Maybe there is a reason why in France, in Spain, in Scotland, alcohol is banned in stadiums. Maybe they (Qataris) are more intelligent than us, had thought maybe we should be doing that.”

As per the revised rules, fans and spectators can drink alcoholic beer in the evenings in the FIFA Fan Festival, which is a designated party area that also offers live music and activities.

The ban came as a major shock to official sponsor US-based beer giant Budweiser, which has reportedly pumped in $75 million as part of the sponsorship agreement with FIFA. And now, when it won’t be allowed to sell its product or have any visibility at the matches, its brand value will suffer. This would a complete breach of the multimillion-dollar contract that FIFA and the beverage company have signed.

The FIFA chief on Saturday pointed out that even in previous World Cup editions, hosts were asked to make concessions. Like in 2014, Brazil was forced to change a law to allow alcohol sales in stadiums.

    Messi’s injury

Earlier in the day, Argentinian forward and superstriker Lionel Messi and six other players reportedly missed Argentina’s field training camp at Qatar University as many feared that the ace footballer could be injured.

The 35-year-old ace footballer is Argentina’s captain and greatest hope for the upcoming tournament. The South American country hasn’t succeeded in winning the top title since 1986, when superstar Diego Maradona led them to glory in Mexico. Many believe as Messi is paying his last world cup, it’s time for Messi to end the nation’s trophy drought.

Later in the day, Argentine outlet Ole reportedly said that the Paris Saint-Germain star was part of a ‘special’ programme in the gym, specially designed for him to prevent any risk of injury before the tournament.

FIFA World Cup in Qatar: Know about host nation, opening match, squads, ticket prices, and more

World Cup 2022 in Qatar: The wait is almost over for the world’s biggest sporting event. Fans eagerly waiting for the FIFA World Cup 2022, which would kick off on November 20 and culminate on December 18, can now count the remaining hours at their fingertips. Qatar is the first country in the Middle East country, and second in Asia, after Japan and South Korea, to host the prestigious sporting event.

Also, for the first time in its 92-year history, the tournament is taking place in November and December rather than in the middle of the year as Qatar is one of the hottest nations in the world.

    Qatar: The host

The selection of Qatar as the host country of the 2022 World Cup was done in 2010. As per reports, the country has spent a whopping $300 billion on the tournament’s preparations. It has developed highways, hotels, recreation areas, and six new football stadiums and upgraded two along with training sites at an estimated cost of up to $10 billion to accommodate world-class players. The stadiums where the matches will be played are Al Bayt Stadium, Khalifa International Stadium, Al Thumama Stadium, Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Lusail Stadium, Ras Abu Aboud Stadium, Education City Stadium, and Al Janoub Stadium, to hold the tournament. With 80,000 seats, Lusail Iconic Stadium is the largest stadium of the upcoming world cup.

Qatar’s investment has caught everyone’s eye as it is much higher as compared to other hosts. Picture this: Russia spent $11.6 billion spent for the FIFA World Cup in 2018, Brazil invested $15 billion in 2014, South Africa shelled out $3.6 billion in 2010. Before that, Germany spent $4.3 billion in 2006, Japan $7 billion in 2002, France $2.3 billion in 1998, and the US $500 million in 1994.

Besides, the host country was in the middle of many controversies starting from the ban of beer sales inside the stadiums, its strict rules on homosexuality, and lastly, serious abuse and mistreatment of migrant workers who built the tournament’s infrastructure.

    Match details

Thirty-two countries will be taking part in football’s biggest event. This tournament will kick start with a Group A match between hosts Qatar and Ecuador on November 20. The opening game will be played at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor, while the final match takes place on December 18 at the Lusail Stadium in Lusail.

    Ticket prices

Pricing on tickets depends on a variety of factors such as who is playing, the stage of the tournament, and more. As per FIFA, nearly three million tickets have been sold across the eight stadiums in Qatar. The tournament is expected to deliver record revenue for the organising body, much more than what it had earned ($5.4 billion) in Russia. The total ticket revenue is estimated to be about $1 billion, as per news reports.

There are 4 categories in the tickets:

Category 1 is the highest-priced ticket and is located in prime areas within the stadium.

Category 2 and Category 3 are tickets that are placed in seating areas within the stadium that offer a less optimal view of the action.

Category 4 is tickets within the stadium that are reserved exclusively for residents of Qatar.

The estimated base ticket prices are as follows:

    Match Cat. 1   Cat. 2 Cat. 3 Cat. 4
