The Fibroid Foundation Announces National Menstrual Health Awareness Month

    [ad_1]

May is National Menstrual Health Awareness Month — May 28 is International Menstrual Hygiene Day

The Fibroid Foundation announces National Menstrual Health Awareness Month 2024. This year’s theme is “Menstrual Health — Lack of Information at Every Phase.”

The Foundation applauds Congresswoman Grace Meng (NY-6) for her leadership in introducing House Resolution 351: Recognizing the impact the stigmatization of menstruation has on the lives of women, girls, and people who menstruate, and expressing support for the designation of the month of May as “National Menstrual Health Awareness Month.”

A Congressional Briefing will be held on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 2:45 p.m. ET at the Rayburn House Office Building.

Click here to RSVP (seating is limited).

The briefing is hosted in partnership with:

The World Health Organization defines menstrual health as follows: “… menstrual health means that women and girls and other people who menstruate, have access to information and education about it; to the menstrual products they need; water, sanitation, and disposal facilities; to competent and empathic care when needed; to live, study and work in an environment in which menstruation is seen as positive and healthy — not something to be ashamed of; and to fully participate in work and social activities.”(1)

Celebrate National Menstrual Health Awareness Month with these toolkit resources from The Fibroid Foundation.

Working together, the stigma of menstruation can be erased.

The mission of The Fibroid Foundation is to eradicate uterine fibroids by amplifying and advocating for the unique voices of those affected from menarche through menopause. Our ultimate vision is to discover a cure, liberating women from the burdens of this affliction. In line with our core mission, we are dedicated to improving women’s healthcare worldwide, with a firm commitment to eradicating menstrual stigma that affects, restricts and endangers women everywhere. Our approach is rooted in research, education, advocacy, legislation, and innovative consulting.

The Fibroid Foundation Celebrates 10 Years of Advocacy

    [ad_1]

The Fibroid Foundation is celebrating 10 years of advocacy and hosting the 3rd Annual Fibroid Research Summit. Since 2013, the organization has been a leader in uterine fibroid advocacy — a health concern that affects 26 million women in the U.S. and millions more globally. This milestone anniversary marks a decade of erasing menstrual stigmas, designing and authoring research studies, providing access to treatment resources, and leading the way in initiating legislation on uterine fibroids and menstrual health.

Founder Sateria Venable reflected on the past decade by saying, “I’m grateful to each community member, clinician, donor, and legislator who recognizes the importance of eliminating menstrual suffering. Menstrual health should be a concern for our community at large because it impacts each of us.”

To join in the celebration, all are encouraged to visit the Fibroid Foundation’s website to learn more about the 10th anniversary and the events planned.

Uterine fibroids are the most common gynecologic condition in women, yet research remains underfunded. Dr. James Segars, Director, Division of Reproductive Science and Women’s Health Research, Professor of Gynecology and Obstetrics at Johns Hopkins University, authored a 2020 paper which concluded that, “In the subsets of bodily pain, vitality, and social functioning, fibroids were consistently a larger burden than heart disease, diabetes mellitus, and breast cancer.”1

The Fibroid Foundation continues to advocate for the passage of The Stephanie Tubbs Jones Fibroid Research and Education Act — H.R. 4572 and S.2303, introduced by Representative Yvette D. Clarke (NY-9) and Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ), respectively. Continued community support is requested by residents in each state to achieve the Congressional support required in order for both bills to be passed into law. Letters can be sent to your congressional representative via this link.

According to The Fibroid Foundation, patients are suffering in silence. Community members express concerns about limited treatment options, the high cost of treatment, insurance coverage, and difficulty finding fibroid specialists. The organization recognizes the significant health disparities that impact its community and provides support to address the disparities from a unique patient perspective.

In the United States, an estimated 26,000,000 women between the ages of 15 and 50 have uterine fibroids.Uterine fibroids are the most common gynecologic condition in women2, however, treatment options and medical research funding have yet to match the enormity of the affected community.

The “Uterine Fibroids: Burden and Unmet Medical Need” 2017 study found that, “Using ultrasound screening, the estimated cumulative incidence rate of UF (uterine fibroids) by the age of 50 is significantly higher in black women (80%) compared with white women (nearly 70%).”3 Annually, uterine fibroids account for approximately half of hysterectomies performed in the United States.  Data has shown that there are significant cardiovascular risk factors associated with hysterectomy.

According to The Fibroid Foundation, patients are suffering in silence. Community members express concerns about limited treatment options, the high cost of treatment, insurance coverage, and difficulty finding fibroid specialists. The organization recognizes the significant health disparities impacting its community and provides support to address them from a unique patient perspective.
