  • Video captures tense gunfire between police, felon in Balboa Park

    Authorities have released body-cam footage of a police shooting that wounded a felon last month after he allegedly fired a pistol at a pursuing officer during a foot chase in Balboa Park.

    The events that led to the non-fatal exchange of gunfire began shortly before 4 p.m. on Dec. 16, when two San Diego Police Department officers patrolling in a cruiser near Cabrillo Bridge tried to detain Allen Baker, 54, as he rode an e-bike in the 2900 block of Balboa Drive, just east of Sixth Avenue and south of Spruce Street.

    When Baker failed to yield and rode off toward a wooded area, the lawmen pulled over, and one of them, Officer Kellan Taeatafa-De La Rosa, got out from behind the wheel of the police vehicle and sprinted after the suspect, his uniform-worn camera activated.

    During the brief chase, Baker abandoned the bicycle and fled on foot.

    Moments later, after running down a grassy hill surrounded by brushy foliage, he turned to face the approaching officer, held out a handgun front of him and fired a shot, according to police.

    Taeatafa-De La Rosa, unharmed, responding by firing back, discharging five rounds at Baker, sending him crumpling to the ground. Paramedics took the suspect to a hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening bullet wounds.

    The volley of gunfire caused no other injuries, police said.

    Stills and slow-motion segments of the video recorded by the officer’s body camera appear to show a cloud of gray gunpowder smoke appearing in front of Baker’s hands as he apparently points his gun at the officer.

    Officers found the suspect’s pistol in a patch of shrubs near where he fell after being shot, according to police.

    Baker has been booked on suspicion of assault on and attempted murder of a police officer, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

     A 36-year-old felon who escaped while he was being arrested in Lemon Grove by San Diego County Sheriff’s Office deputies was at-large Wednesday.

    Hiram Sanchez, who was wanted on a felony warrant, was observed by deputies in the 7100 block of Broadway Dec. 18 and placed in handcuffs, authorities said.

    During the arrest, Sanchez ran from deputies onto State Route 94. Because of the danger to deputies, they did not pursue him on the freeway, authorities said.

    A search involving a San Diego Police Department helicopter, California Highway Patrol officers and a sheriff’s K-9 unit was unable to locate Sanchez, authorities said.

    The San Diego Regional Fugitive Task Force is actively looking for Sanchez, who is considered dangerous and is believed to be somewhere in East County, possibly in El Cajon or La Mesa.

    Sanchez was described as a Hispanic man, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall weighing around 160 pounds. He was last seen wearing a white hat, black shirt, back athletic pants and white shoes.

Payton was also booked for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, a prohibited person in possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm in public, carrying a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, and possession of an unserialized firearm.The victim was reunited with her family.Police said Saturday that they later learned with the help of the Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Office and fingerprint analysis that one of the suspect’s real names was Stephanie Maghoney. She had an active felony warrant for her arrest in Tracy, California, for burglary. Maghoney was re-arrested for that outstanding warrant and now also faces a felony charge for false impersonation.

    More Details Regarding The Singer’s Previous Legal Issues

    According to Billboard, in May 2022, Rod Wave was arrested in St Petersburg, Florida, in connection to an incident that allegedly occurred the month before. The outlet reports that Wave was accused of entering his girlfriend’s home on April 24, 2022, and choking her.

    The singer was reportedly booked into the Pinellas County Jail.

    However, the singer’s attorney, Bradford M. Cohen, reportedly called the incident a “misunderstanding.” Furthermore, the charges against the singer were ultimately dropped.

    “That misunderstanding resulted in Mr. Green’s arrest,” Cohen told Pitchfork via email. “After review of the evidence and speaking with witnesses, the State entered a Nolle Pross/ No Info on the matter and will not be pursuing charges.”

    Plainfield man accused in violent attack against girlfriend charged

    PLAINFIELD, Ill. — A Plainfield man accused in a violent attack against his girlfriend is facing a handful of charges, according to Joliet police.

    Officers say 52-year-old Jonah Madia has been charged with domestic battery, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, unlawful possession of ammunition, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated discharge of a firearm, endangering the life or health of a child, manufacture and delivery of cannabis, possession of cannabis, and possession of explosives.

    Authorities say the charges were handed down after Madia allegedly beat his girlfriend and threatened to shoot her at a home in Plainfield on Friday night.

    Joliet police say officers were first called to the home in the 6300 block of Clifton Court, just before 9 p.m., after reports of a loud disturbance.

    Officers say when they arrived on the scene, they were let into the two-story home by a 6-year-old child and after entering the residence, officers immediately heard a disturbance on the second floor.

    Officers say they went upstairs and found Madia in a bedroom of the home where he was detained. His 38-year-old girlfriend was then located in another bedroom.

    According to police, an investigation then revealed that Madia had allegedly grown angry with his girlfriend, grabbed her by the hair and slammed her head against a wall several times, causing her to fall to the floor.

    Authorities say following the alleged attack, it is believed that Madia allegedly retrieved a gun from a bedroom and pointed it at the woman while threatening to shoot her. He then allegedly fired the gun two times into the bathroom floor and once into the bedroom floor.

    Officers say the woman was not struck by gunfire.

    Following an investigation, officers say they retrieved a loaded gun from the bedroom.

    While taking Madia into custody, authorities say they spotted suspected cannabis and narcotics in the home.

    After securing a search warrant, detectives searched the home early Saturday morning and allegedly recovered over 800 grams of suspected cannabis, suspected LSD, commercial-grade fireworks and ammunition.

    Authorities have not provided details on how the child is related to the suspect or the victim.
