‘Bubble Bobble’, ‘Path of Ra’, Plus Today’s Other New Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 29th, 2022. Not much left in the year now, and the eShop reflects that. While it is a Thursday, we only have five new releases to look at, and three of them are extremely dubious. We’ve also got the list of new sales and the expiring sales for you to consider. Another light one today, but hey, Shaun needs some rest time too. Let’s go!

    New Releases

    Arcade Archives Bubble Bobble ($7.99)

Oh yes, that’s the good stuff. Up until now, if you wanted to play the arcade version of Bubble Bobble on your Switch, you had to do it through Bubble Bobble 4 Friends. A fun game, but if you just want to play the original that is a stiff price to cough up. Well, now you can drop eight bucks and have it via Arcade Archives. This game doesn’t need much introduction, so all I need to tell you is that Hamster did their usual fine job with it. Off with you, now. Go buy.

    Path of Ra ($13.00)

This is a puzzle game of sorts where you need to rearrange the pieces of the hieroglyphs to make a path forward for the Pharaoh. We’ve seen games like this before, but not so many that another one is unwelcome. Reviews on other platforms, including mobile, seem to be pretty good. Note that you can pick this up on your mobile device for a considerably cheaper price, provided you don’t mind playing on that platform.

Infected Run to Survive: Zombie Apocalypse Survival Story Shooter Dead Cry ($4.99)

Farming Real Simulation Tractor, Combine Trucks Farmer Land Game ($4.99)

Monster Impossible Truck No Limit Adventure Drive Simulator Sport 3D ($4.99)

I could do three separate descriptions for these, but there really isn’t much point. VG Games may or may not be Midnight Works or Cooking & Publishing or Piotr Skalski or Benjamin Kistler or Benoit Vanesse or any of the other crap merchants that stink up the eShop with low-effort garbage like this, but I suppose it doesn’t matter in the end who is taking a dump on your face, only that they are. So here you go, three freshly-pinched turds to end the year with. Bon appetit.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Not a whole lot to get fussed about in the sales today, either. Maybe Moonlighter or Children of Morta if you don’t have them already? Over in the outbox, sales from Activision and Square Enix are wrapping up. Time to make some hard choices about where to spend that holiday money, everyone.

The Best Hidden Gems on Nintendo Switch in 2022 – SwitchArcade Special – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Ah, the end of the year. A time for musings of the year that has passed, and speculation as to what the new year will bring. And also a time for lists! This one covers the hidden gems that hit the Nintendo Switch this year, and we really do our best to make sure they’re deep cuts. A couple of years ago, I handled this list. Last year, our pal Mikhail took the reins. This time, we’ve teamed up. I’ve selected a tasty dozen titles, and Mikhail threw in a few of his own. If you’re looking for some good games that are off the beaten path, read on!

    Sophstar ($12.99)

I was really surprised at how good Sophstar turned out to be, especially given the reasonable price. It’s a very fun vertical shooter that is easy to learn but with enough depth to please veterans, and includes enough modes, options, and extras to keep you playing for a long time. I wish the soundtrack had a little more kick to it and I suppose it doesn’t really do anything dramatically novel, but otherwise I am hard-pressed to find much fault in this game. A virtual must-have for shoot-em-up fans and one of the finer choices in a year of great games in this genre. -Shaun Musgrave

    Arcade Paradise ($19.99)

There’s a lot of joy in the routine, and Arcade Paradise taps into that perfectly. You inherit a run-down laundromat from your father and through your hard work will eventually turn it into a massive arcade full of cool games. The best part is that you can play those games, and many of them are a lot of fun on their own. Oh no, the customers’ laundry is ready to go into the dryer but I’m in the middle of a game! I guess it doesn’t matter if they have to wait a little, right? A great premise pulled off superbly. -Shaun Musgrave

    Beacon Pines ($19.99)

If you like adventure games or just want to enjoy an interesting, well-written story with a pleasingly dark vibe, Beacon Pines will serve you well. It’s a thoroughly engrossing tale that pulls you in further the more you play it. Perhaps a little too substantial to explore in a single session, but you’ll likely find yourself wanting to see it all the way through in one go. Add in a superb presentation with gorgeous visuals and excellent narration, and you’ve got a winner. Publisher Fellow Traveler had a stellar year all around, and this is yet another one of the jewels of its line-up. -Shaun Musgrave

The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story ($49.99)

The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story released at a bad time for me thanks to a family emergency, but I’ve been slowly making my way through it over the months. As someone who got into FMV games through Her Story, I never managed to find anything that impressed me as much as that until The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story. The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story is the best FMV game I’ve ever played, and a fantastic introduction to the genre. You tackle multiple murders taking place over the span of a century. The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story often felt like I was watching a big budget drama from Japan on Netflix. It is just sublime, and I’m currently replaying it on PS5 after experiencing it on Switch. -Mikhail Madnani

    OneShot: World Machine Edition ($14.99)

I won’t talk much about the specific qualities of OneShot because this is indeed one of Those Games, but I think just about anyone who enjoys the adventure game genre will fall for its charms. It’s a clever, immensely likeable game that is metatextual without being obnoxious about it. You’ll almost certainly want to replay it immediately after you finish it, and that’s the mark of a pretty awesome story and game in my books. It has made the transition to Switch as well as it can to any non-computer platform, and if this is where you happen to play it, I think you’ll have a fine time. If you haven’t played it before, here’s your excuse to do it. –Shaun Musgrave

    Chained Echoes ($24.99)

I haven’t posted my review of this excellent JRPG-style game yet, because I really wanted to take my time with it. The work of a single developer who toiled away for years, Chained Echoes shares a similar origin to a lot of games that had big promise but didn’t quite land the execution. This game, however, not only met my expectations but wildly exceeded them. If you have any fondness for 16-bit JRPGs, you’ll have a great time with Chained Echoes. A true love letter to the genre that isn’t content to only be a love letter. -Shaun Musgrave

    TinyKin ($24.99)

I had no expectations at all going into this 3D platformer, but as soon as I started playing TinyKin, I was sucked completely into its world. The area designs are fantastic, encouraging you to root out and collect everything while presenting you with enough options that you never need to bang your head against any one thing. It also has a very charming presentation. The choice of using 2D sprites for the characters takes a little adjustment, but once you do? This is one of the better games in this genre you can find on the Switch, and its recent update added even more things to love. –Shaun Musgrave

Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief ($29.99)

While I’m always grateful when publishers bring back popular games from a few console generations ago to make them accessible to players, I love it when we get ports or remasters of games that either are lesser known, or ones that have never released outside Japan before. I didn’t know what Kamiwaza: Way of the Thief was until NIS America confirmed a localization for consoles and PC. With its budget price, I hope more people check this one out, because of its freedom. It feels like a perfect blend of remaining within its budget constraints while giving you enough freedom to make you want to play the stealth game more and more. -Mikhail Madnani

    Raging Blasters ($14.70)

Raging Blasters isn’t out there breaking any shoot-em-up molds, but it pulls together a lot of well-loved ideas into a sensible, enjoyable whole. More casual players will appreciate the somewhat gentle nature of the default arcade mode, while those who enjoy a solid score attack game will certainly find plenty to keep them coming back. The emphasis on making sure the Caravan-style timed scoring runs as enjoyable as possible really pays off in this vertical shooter. Another excellent piece of work from shoot-em-up one-man-developer Terarin, who continues to impress with each new release. -Shaun Musgrave

Little Noah: Scion of Paradise ($14.99)

Little Noah: Scion of Paradise is a surprisingly fun take on the side-scrolling roguelite genre, with plenty of personality courtesy of its charming character designs and solid gameplay mechanics that are perhaps a little easier to come to grips with than those found in similar games. While I wouldn’t consider it among the very best in its category, it’s an extremely well-made game that is worth playing if you’ve enjoyed games like Dead Cells or Rogue Legacy. In fact, I think I had a better time with this than I did with Rogue Legacy 2, and that’s no slight on that game. A fantastic return for a set of characters and setting that I frankly never expected to see again. -Shaun Musgrave

    Super Mega Zero ($9.99)

Super Mega Zero manages the difficult job of finding new depths to plumb in a sub-genre that has seen a lot of love over the years. Every time I thought I had it all figured out, another stage would come along and force me to come at things completely differently. The changing number gimmick combines with some truly inspired puzzle and platforming challenges to create a thoroughly enjoyable, incredibly tricky action game. Throw in the extra collectible Pi items and speed runs, and you’ve got a game that will last you for a long while. –Shaun Musgrave

Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day Journey ($39.99)

Shin chan: Me and the Professor on Summer Vacation The Endless Seven-Day Journey is one of those games I never thought would be released outside Japan. It is a relaxing game that blends in some fantastical elements, but mostly is about soaking in the countryside atmosphere and just playing a cozy game. Even if you aren’t very familiar with Shin-chan, this is an experience you need to have. I also love how it feels like you’re playing an interactive anime episode with the gorgeous artwork and animations. I can’t wait for this one to get a physical release in 2023. -Mikhail Madnani

    Infernax ($19.99)

Infernax just feels good to play. The mechanics are solid, and the fundamentals are done properly. You don’t have a massive array of moves and attacks to choose from, but what you have in your toolbox works well for handling the enemies you’ll be facing. Exploring the countryside took me back to my younger years wandering the mysterious world of Simon’s Quest, especially with the day-night element in play here. Those who enjoy exploratory 2D platformers and aren’t afraid of taking on one with a little bite should definitely play Infernax as soon as possible. -Shaun Musgrave

    Eschatos ($26.99)

Eschatos is a fantastic shoot-em-up experience all on its own but when you throw in extra games Judgement Silversword, Cardinal Sins, and the various extra modes and features included in this package, you end up with an incredibly easy game to recommend. Should you choose to fully indulge in all it has to offer, Eschatos will keep you busy for hours on end. Not that there was much doubt, but this Switch version of the game runs like a dream. Another superb addition to the system’s shoot-em-up library, and one that even genre newcomers may find digestible. -Shaun Musgrave

Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness ($14.99)

I enjoyed Gotta Protectors: Cart of Darkness just as much as the previous game, which is no mean feat to repeat. The only knock I can give on it is that it can get a little repetitive if you try to jam too much of it at once, but even that is almost completely alleviated by bringing a buddy or three with you. It’s an enjoyable, tense game with an outstanding presentation in all respects, and a game well-worth adding to your Nintendo Switch collection. Base defense doesn’t get much better than this. -Shaun Musgrave

So those are our picks for the best hidden games for the Nintendo Switch in 2022, but how about yours? Have you got a game you want to champion? If so, please comment below so we can all get in on that. And on behalf of myself and Mikhail, I hope you all can find some games to get in on with our list. Thanks for reading!

  • ‘Marvel Snap’ Guide – How to Build Decks and Play to Win – TouchArcade

‘Marvel Snap’ Guide – How to Build Decks and Play to Win – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

So, you’re a Marvel fan looking to get into Marvel Snap (Free). Maybe you’re a card game fan seeking the latest hit. Maybe you meant to click on another story but your finger slipped and here you are. Whatever your reason, you’re here now. Am I locked in the cage with you, or are you locked in the cage with me? It doesn’t matter. I’m here to impart some advice from playing the heck out of Marvel Snap since its launch. This is more of a beginner’s guide, but there are some tips in here that perhaps even regular players can use. At the very least, I hope it’s entertaining.

The first steps are the easiest. Go download the game on your platform of choice from the store of your choice. Play through the tutorials. They’re very good. Mr. Brode and his team worked hard on them. They will teach you the basics of the game in a way some text on a website really can’t replicate. Everyone gets the same basic starter deck, and it will suit your purposes for a little while but not too long. You’ll also get the same few card unlocks during the tutorials that everyone else does. Once you’ve done that, swing on back here.

Alright, with that done, let’s talk about this guide. I’m going to give you advice in three different sections. First, how to build a deck. I won’t go super-deep here, but there will be a guide for that later. Just some basic deck-building theory to get you on your way. Next, some tips for playing. A special focus on the Snap mechanic here in particular. Finally, some advice for how to use your resources to keep on moving smoothly.

    Deck Building 101

Your starting deck is a nice little potpourri that demonstrates various types of card features. You’ll probably have swapped out one or two cards by the time you’re reading this. Maybe you are a little attached to it. I’m sorry, you need to get rid of it. Well, not right away. But it isn’t going to be helpful to you for very long, so let’s build a new deck or three.

Generally speaking, your deck should have some kind of theme. Some cards work together better than others, and you’ll want to have as many of those lovely situations coming up as possible. You’re going to be limited by the cards you have, of course. You might also want to avoid having 100% of your eggs in a particular basket, because the other player might have a counter to your core strategy and then you’ll be in trouble. Let’s look at a few basic deck types.

    Destroyer Deck

The goal of this deck is to take advantage of cards that gain power through destruction. Nova, for example, will give all of your other cards +1 Power when he is destroyed. Bucky comes back as the much stronger Winter Soldier. The key element of these decks are your triggers. At lower levels, Carnage and Deathlok are likely to be the ones you have access to. It’s best to include both to increase your chances of pulling one, because if you never do the jig will be up. It’ll be a while before you have a thematically appropriate 5-Cost or 6-Cost card to fill this out, so take your pick of Iron Man/Blue Marvel and a powerful heavy hitter like Hulk or America Chavez until then.

    Movement Deck

This one focuses on moving cards around to take advantage of various buffs. Vulture, Kraven, and Multiple Man all benefit from moving or having things moved to them. Doctor Strange, Cloak, Heimdall, and Iron Fist will help you make those moves. Buffing up Multiple Man before he copies himself makes his clones stronger, so you might want to include some cards that can buff him like the Hulk Buster. Vision and Heimdall will likely take your 5-Cost and 6-Cost positions, but Blue Marvel is a good idea to include as well since he can buff all of your clones.

    Discard Deck

This deck can be a little hard to build at first unless you get really lucky with the cards you get, but it’s a real grower. You’ll notice some cards force you to discard another card to play them. A counter to the Power of those cards, but also a penalty you can twist to your advantage. Wolverine is a good choice, as even if he is discarded he will pop up somewhere. This deck really gets cooking when you get Morbius and Apocalypse. Morbius gets stronger for every card you discard, and Apocalypse gets stronger the more times he is discarded. Dracula is another good choice, as at the end of the game he takes on the Power of a card discarded from your final hand.

Hopefully you get the general idea. We’ll look at more decks in greater detail in a future guide, but this should at least get you on the way with some ideas.

    Playing the Game 101

The first piece of advice happens before you even start a round. At any given time, a particular location will be featured. Keep a variety of decks and try to take advantage of that location by using the best set-up. Of course, it’s also worth remembering that other players will be doing the same. It might be a good idea to prepare a deck that counters the kind of deck that people would use in the featured location. Yes, this is partly a psychological game.

This probably should go without saying, but the most important tip I can give here is to have a strategy. You only have six turns and twelve cards in your deck. Think about each move you are making and which card you are playing. Is this going to help you win? Are you thinking about how cards work together? Are you keeping in mind that each location can only hold four cards? Sometimes due to luck of the draw you don’t have a great move to make, but you should always be looking for one.

The left location will be revealed first. If you have a good card to play there, by all means. Otherwise, it might be wise to play your first card on the middle or right location. Cards played before the location is revealed aren’t subject to conditions that would normally happen as soon as you play the card there. If the location is revealed as something like Luke’s Bar or The Sanctum Sanctorum, this could benefit you. It also avoids running into players who throw out a card that gets stronger if you play a card at the same location on that turn, as most players start with the left.

Think carefully about when to play a card that buffs other cards. You might be tempted to get it out right away, but it can be far more effective as a late-game surprise. The same goes for debuff cards. Keep your Energy in mind, but throwing a last-minute wrench into the works can be a very good move.

Remember that the ultimate goal is to win two of the three locations. Not one. Not three. Two. Don’t spread yourself too thin, but don’t focus too much on one location either. Keep an eye on where your opponent is focusing their cards. There’s no point throwing away good cards when you can just take the other two spots to win. One extra tip is that players tend to shy away from locations that reduce Power. You can usually win these spots with less resistance, provided you have the right cards for the job.

This is fundamentally a game about math. Many a player faces a loss because they didn’t add up the numbers right and ended up playing too weak of a card to win a location. But this is also a game about reading your opponent. Think about what kind of cards they might have in their hand and use that in your calculations. Someone playing a bunch of Discard cards is probably holding Apocalypse or Hela. If someone plays Moon Girl, they almost certainly have Devil Dinosaur. At the very minimum, you should be prepared for a Hulk. Give yourself a buffer.

Tying into the last point, don’t be afraid to retreat. Do the math. If you can’t win, get out of there. You’ll always lose fewer Cubes by running than you will by playing through a certain loss. Be honest with your chances. Lower-level players tend to stay on the sinking boat, but as you rise through the ranks you’ll notice more players retreat when things look bad. Be like the higher-level players.

So, the Snap. This is the titular mechanic of the game, and it’s where a lot of excitement comes from. If you’re confident in a win, feel free to Snap. That’s why it’s there, right? But the Snap is a lot like raising in Poker. It’s an expression of confidence, and one the other player might take as you having something they can’t see that they should be afraid of. If they’re teetering, a Snap can be the push that makes your opponent retreat. Thus, you can use it to bluff. If you’re trying to bluff, know when to Snap to make it look like you’re legit. The best time for this is when a location is revealed. Your opponent might assume the location favors your hand or deck and think twice about continuing.

    Resource Management 101

Assuming you are playing without paying, you’ll want to use your Credits and Gold carefully. Make sure you’re completing Missions to keep the Credits and Gold coming in, and don’t forget to claim rewards. You can only have six active missions at once, and you’ll miss out if you’re full up when the next set pops. Sometimes you’ll have to play a different deck or use a different strategy to clear these missions, but it’s always worth making sure you have as empty a list as possible.

To start with, I recommend that you only use your Gold to buy Variant cards. Those not only look cool but are also a source of more Collection Level points. You’ll get Gold at a trickle, so make sure you get Variants you like. The more you upgrade a card, the more expensive the next upgrade becomes. Variants are a nice way to give you cheaper upgrades as the supply of new cards starts to slow down.

As for your Credits, those should be used wisely. It’s always best to directly upgrade cards that you already have Boosters for. You’ll get the best value for your Credits by upgrading higher level cards. If you don’t have enough Credits, it’s better to wait. Once you’ve exhausted all of the cards you have Boosters for, head over to the Shop and see what’s available for Fast Upgrade. Again go for the higher level cards here as they will yield the best bang for your buck.

That’s all for this guide, friends. I’ll be back again with more in-depth guides on certain aspects of Marvel Snap, particularly with regards to deck building. For now, this should get you on your way and give you a good foundation to work from. Oh, and don’t forget to have fun while you’re playing. That’s the point, right?

  • The Best Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games We Want to Play in 2023 – SwitchArcade Special – TouchArcade

The Best Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games We Want to Play in 2023 – SwitchArcade Special – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

2022 has been the best year for Nintendo Switch releases since its launch back in 2017 for my tastes at least. I’ve enjoyed far too many games to list here, and even adore many of the classics that got excellent ports to Switch over the last few months. With 2022 now done, there are a lot of games I’ve had my eye on that release over the next few months. Here are the best upcoming Nintendo Switch games for 2023 that I want to play in no particular order.

    Fire Emblem Engage

The Fire Emblem series has seen more success with each new entry after getting saved by Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS years ago. On Nintendo Switch, after an amazing Warriors game, we got Fire Emblem Three Houses and Fire Emblem Three Hopes that are both essentials for every Nintendo Switch owner. Fire Emblem Engage, the newest mainline entry, has an excellent new protagonist design with a more colorful aesthetic throughout. While I’m not the biggest fan of the returning heroes from prior games, the gameplay looks good, and I hope it delivers on being a great tactical RPG when it releases in January.

    Persona 3 Portable / Persona 4 Golden

October saw mainline Persona finally come to Nintendo Switch with the superlative Persona 5 Royal, and we are getting the best Persona game alongside Persona 3 Portable the same month as Fire Emblem Engage. Persona 3 Portable debuted on PSP while Persona 4 Golden debuted on PS Vita. While the latter is the definitive version of Persona 4, Persona 3 Portable had some cutbacks compared to Persona 3. Either way, it is going to be great having two of Atlus’ best JRPGs on Switch.

    Octopath Traveler II

    octopath traveler 2 ii

The original Octopath Traveler remains one of the best games you can play on Nintendo Switch and Octopath Traveler II looks to be building on that with its more ambitious visuals and storytelling. The new characters and music are what I’m looking forward to the most. The only downside to Octopath Traveler II now is its release month being so busy with a few other games on this very list all arriving within days of each other. Square Enix also looks to have taken feedback from the original game into account with how the characters have been interacting in trailers.

Fitness Boxing Fist of the North Star

fitness boxing fist of the north star

Imagineer’s Fitness Boxing games have found a lot of success on Nintendo Switch over the years. In March, Imagineer will release Fitness Boxing Fist of the North Star bringing the world of Fist of the North Star to its Fitness Boxing series. The gameplay so far looks very over the top, and I’m interested to see how this one ends up being when it releases as a big fan of Fist of the North Star. This is the first console game using the Fist of the North Star brand since the brawler on PS4 a few years ago.

Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key

    atelier ryza 3 switch

Koei Tecmo and Gust struck gold with Atelier Ryza. Not only is the protagonist popular among fans of the series and genre, but the games have been continuously improving. Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key looks to build on the first two games with its scope, enhancements, and continuation of Ryza’s story. I loved the first two games and hope this one delivers when it releases in February for Nintendo Switch.

    Metal Slug Tactics

    metal slug tactics

Metal Slug Tactics is a turn-based tactical RPG take on Metal Slug by Leikir Studio and Dotemu. It was originally set for 2022, but was pushed to 2023. While it doesn’t have a confirmed release date, the game looks gorgeous across its reveal and screenshots. Dotemu has been on a roll, and I hope Metal Slug Tactics delivers. SNK needs to work with more developers for bringing back franchises in new genres like this.

Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society

    labyrinth of galleria switch

We don’t have Etrian Odyssey on Switch yet, but the first Labyrinth of Refrain game from NIS in Japan delivered an excellent dungeon RPG. All impressions of Labyrinth of Galleria: The Moon Society from its Japanese release point to this being even better, and I can’t wait to play it on Switch (and other platforms) when it arrives in February. I hope this one gets a demo so I can get more people into the genre and into NIS’ best new IP. It is one of the games I’ve been looking forward to playing for years while talking to friends who imported it from Japan before.

    Theatrhythm Final Bar Line

    THEATRHYTHM FINAL BAR LINE

Theatrhythm Final Bar Line brings hundreds of Square Enix songs into a new entry in the Theatrhythm series. This is also out in February, and it seems like the culmination of every Theatrhythm game with all of its new game modes and content included from the start. While it has a lot of Final Fantasy music, I’m looking forward to the Octopath Traveler music here the most.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

botw 2 tears of the kingdom zelda

I adored The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it is one of the few games I’ve bought multiple times on the same platform. I’m obviously looking forward to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but the excitement is a little muted right now. Nintendo hasn’t properly shown off the game yet. I can’t get excited based on trailers that show barely anything and hope we get a proper media blowout actually showing the game soon. This one is being bought for sure, but I want to see more of it, while hoping the team addresses some of the issues the original had like a forgettable soundtrack and bad stealth.

    Hollow Knight Silksong

I’m not sure Hollow Knight Silksong will actually come out next year, but the original game was brilliant despite its flaws. I played the original on Nintendo Switch and while this one is coming to multiple platforms including Game Pass, I’m looking forward to checking it out when it hits Switch. I’m hoping this sequel ends up more like Rogue Legacy 2 than Hotline Miami 2 when it comes to sequels to beloved indie games.

This year delivered in spades for Nintendo Switch owners with massive new games, ports, remasters, and a lot more. I’ve spent the most time with Switch on the console side this year, and I’m looking forward to seeing how 2023 plays out with so many games I want to play hitting Nintendo Switch either exclusively or alongside other platforms. What are you looking forward to playing in 2023 on Nintendo Switch?

  • ‘Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion’ Review, Plus the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

‘Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion’ Review, Plus the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 28th, 2022. I can’t remember the last time we had zero new releases on a weekday, but it’s been a long while. But worry not, dear readers. I have written a fairly lengthy review of Square Enix’s Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion so that you have something to savor. After that, there’s nothing to do but head into the new and expiring sales of the day. Yes, there were a few things not on sale. They are on sale now. Let’s get to it!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion ($49.99)

Back in 2007 when Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII hit the PlayStation Portable, I could scarcely believe that ten years had passed since the release of the original Final Fantasy VII. And now as I sit here watching the credits roll on Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII- Reunion (I will indulge those hyphens exactly once in this review), I find it even harder to grapple with the idea that it has been fifteen years since that time and a whopping quarter of a century since the release of the game it appended to. It’s enough to make a fellow downright existential.

But that’s appropriate, isn’t it? Final Fantasy VII‘s story deals a lot with such themes, and it’s no surprise that a prequel to that story also is neck-deep in it. The hero of this game is Zack, and anyone who has played Final Fantasy VII knows his ultimate fate. Cloud is also here, so you know that nonsense is going to be dealt with at some point. Aerith is here, allowing us to see her brief but beautiful romance with Zack that is barely mentioned in the main game. Sephiroth is here, and he spends most of the game in a fairly lucid state, though we know he won’t end the story that way. Other major characters include Zack’s superior Angeal and Sephiroth’s pal Genesis, and given they’re not in Final Fantasy VII we can assume they’re also not in for a smooth time in this game’s plot.

Assuming you’ve played the original and are here wondering about what’s new in this Reunion version, let’s quickly go over that. First of all, the thing you can spot with your own peepers: the graphics have been significantly overhauled. The 3D models of both characters and backgrounds have been redone with more of those lovely polygons that we’re all rather fond of, and everything is in crispy HD resolution. The UI has been redone, too. Looks sharp. Every line is voiced now, though the original cast has been replaced with Final Fantasy VII Remake actors where applicable. This may or may not have been a good idea. The soundtrack has been arranged, and that is generally more successful.

The combat system has also seen a number of tweaks, some small and some bigger, to make everything flow better and give the player a bit more agency. You can now stock your Limit Breaks to use when you see fit, and the new Ability Gauge system gives you a means of countering the powerful attacks that bosses like to toss out. The camera is a little easier to grapple with, and you can skip the sequences the DMW likes to kick out mid-combat when you hit certain jackpots. On a more micro level, attacks seem to come out faster, movement is a bit snappier, and things are overall more exciting as a result. In a lot of ways, Reunion is a game changer.

With that said, the heart beating in the chest of Crisis Core Reunion is still very much that of the 2007 PlayStation Portable game, with everything that comes with it. The Nintendo DS may have unexpectedly rocketed into the stratosphere with its broadly appealing software library, but the PlayStation Portable had raised a considerable audience of its own at this point, largely buoyed by the meteoric success of Capcom’s Monster Hunter games. And lessons were learned from Monster Hunter, resulting in a very distinct flavor of game I like to call PSP Core. And Crisis Core is PSP Core to its very bones. Oh, you’re in new clothes. You’ve got a new ‘do. But I see you, buddy. You can take the boy out of Gongaga, but you can’t take the Gongaga out of the boy.

The PlayStation Portable had a lot in common with the Nintendo Switch. It was just powerful enough to try to keep up with the big-pants consoles, but not powerful enough to smoothly pull it off. The more it tried to fight that, the worse the results tended to be. Monster Hunter helped developers find the sweet spot: smaller, more compact experiences with the polygons saved on smaller areas invested in making everything look as nice as possible. It was not only better for the hardware capabilities, it suited portable play well. Got a few minutes? Do a little mission. Got more time? Tackle a bunch.

This essentially is how Crisis Core works. Just add in some lengthy cutscenes here and there because, well, Final Fantasy. Don’t expect a standard RPG at all. There is some exploration, but it’s not a significant part of the game. There are only a few areas that go beyond being largely linear locations that funnel you from one fight to another. The game wants you to be able to wrap things up before you hit your station. So you run around some small areas, you do a handful of fights, and that’s that. Lots of optional stuff to take on, too. Just in case you don’t have time for the big cutscenes. The battles take place in confined arenas and are largely action-based, but with lots of little timers and things that keep you from going all Dante on your foes.

Wrapped around all these little mini-missions is a story. Sometimes it is very good. Sometimes it is very stupid. There’s really two things going on here, and they dovetail with each other now and then before finally smashing up against each other in one of the game’s climaxes. You’ve got Zack’s story of finding his feet as a SOLDIER, meeting and cultivating a romance with Aerith, and his ultimate end at the hands of you-know-who. This story pretty much rules. It has that rich sense of dread that comes with every prequel involving characters who you know are going to bite it. And its finale does not disappoint. It combines gameplay mechanics and the narrative in a way that hits you right in your cry-muscles. Utterly magnificent stuff that significantly adds to the lore of Final Fantasy VII.

Then there’s the plot with Genesis, the character that Tetsuya Nomura shoe-horned into the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII project while he was crushing on Japanese pop star/space vampire Gackt. Genesis sucks. His whole storyline sucks. He’s the worst kind of retconned nonsense, and his presence makes this game and Final Fantasy VII as a whole worse. He cheapens Sephiroth’s character and arc, and he has a penchant for slipping into insufferably long monologues. A giant cornball whose only redeeming quality is the satisfaction you’ll feel when you drop the blade of your sword on his gorgeous feather-haired head. His obnoxious presence isn’t enough to ruin the whole affair for me, but I can’t say the same for everyone I know who played this game. Oh well! Not much a remake is going to do about that.

Anyway, don’t be fooled by the sheen, especially with how shiny this Reunion version is. Crisis Core is a pretty game, but it’s a very basic one at its core. This is not a knock on the game, but I’ve noticed people who come into it expecting something bigger come away disappointed. This is a game that was almost perfectly built for the small chunks of time people tend to sink into portable play, and I think that makes this Switch version a fantastic way to experience it. The big-pants console versions will give you better visuals, but the Switch version holds its own just fine. Maybe dock it for the last bit, but otherwise this is a nice game to digest in bits between the bigger things in life. Come into it remembering this is a PSP-butt PSP game and you’ll be fine. You’ll want to suffocate Genesis with a pillow, but you’ll survive. Expect a full-on RPG experience, and not even that astounding ending will save it for you.

Crisis Core Final Fantasy VII Reunion is a spiffy remake of a game that is very evocative of its time and place. As long as you keep that context in mind, you’ll likely have a really good time with it. The story has its ups and downs but the likeable protagonist and fantastic ending make it worth the weaker bits. This Switch port is quite good, and that makes it easier to enjoy the game portably, as was originally intended. A knock-down-the-door must-have this is not, but those who want to dig deeper into the world of Final Fantasy VII will find no better alternative.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

It’s not like WB Games titles going on sale is a new or unusual thing, but here you go. Some of the DLC for LEGO Star Wars is at a new low, at least. Over in the outbox, a few hot sales on things like Green Hell and Panzer Dragoon Remake are coming to a close. Check both lists and ponder your purchases carefully.

  • The Best Upcoming PC Games We Want to Play on Steam Deck in 2023 – TouchArcade

The Best Upcoming PC Games We Want to Play on Steam Deck in 2023 – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Despite having not been available for even a full year, the Steam Deck has become one of my most used gaming systems. I played many ports and new releases on it over the last few months, but was impressed by how it made me try out PC-only games that might never see console ports. With 2022 now done, there are many games I’m looking forward to playing on Steam Deck in the coming months. This list, in no particular order, features the 10 games I want to play on Steam Deck in 2023.

    Street Fighter 6

Street Fighter 6 looks and feels incredible as of the two betas I played. Despite Street Fighter V having a rocky launch, I’ve enjoyed it way more than Street Fighter IV, but Street Fighter 6 is special. I played both betas on PS5, but can’t wait to dig into it on Steam Deck. I like playing fighting games on the Deck quite a bit, and even have a dedicated 512GB SD card just for fighting games. All reports point to Street Fighter 6 running well on Steam Deck. I’m definitely looking forward to playing as Juri again from June when Street Fighter 6 releases on PC.

    Star Wars: Jedi Survivor

Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is one of the few recent Star Wars games that managed to impress me beyond just visually. I enjoyed playing it on console, and have been replaying it on Steam Deck recently. This got me excited for a proper new generation game from the team. I don’t know how Star Wars: Jedi Survivor will look and run on Steam Deck considering it is only releasing on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but I’m confident in the team, and will be trying it on Steam Deck for sure in addition to one of the console platforms. The original Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is available heavily discounted right now, and I’d recommend it if you want an interesting and challenging Star Wars action game.

The Last of Us Part I

Sony and Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us is one of the most critically acclaimed games of all time, but I didn’t enjoy it as much as most people when I played it on PS4. The Last of Us Part I on PS5 is a shockingly good looking game, and it is one of Sony’s few PS5-only games coming to PC soon. I’m curious about this one because I want to see how the engine scales down from the PS5 version to Steam Deck, and to also see what PC-specific features are added. Signs point to The Last of Us Part I working out of the box on Steam Deck as well.

    Like a Dragon: Ishin

Sega’s Ryu Ga Gotoku or Yakuza series has seen a lot of success outside Japan ever since Yakuza 0 released on PS4 back in 2017. The games have gone from not releasing outside Japan to getting worldwide simultaneous multi platform launches in recent years. Yakuza Ishin is the only PS4 entry in the series to not see an English release, and that is changing with Like a Dragon: Ishin, a remake of Yakuza Ishin, for PC and console platforms. This is a completely standalone story, but it features characters from across the series with brawler style gameplay. I played a few hours of the Japanese original, but can’t wait to finally experience the story with the remake on PS5 and Steam Deck this February.

    Resident Evil 4

The original Resident Evil 4 is one of the most beloved games of all time, and Capcom is remaking it for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, and PC this March. Resident Evil 4 remake, titled simply Resident Evil 4, looks incredible, and I can’t wait to see the improvements Capcom brings to the original. Resident Evil 2 remake is one of the developer’s best games ever, and I hope that is the case with Resident Evil 4 remake as well. So far, the engine used for Resident Evil 4 remake works brilliantly on Steam Deck giving me confidence in playing this on Deck right from day one.

    Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars is a retro style turn-based RPG that harkens back to the SNES era with its gorgeous art and music featuring Yasunori Mitsuda of Chrono Trigger and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fame as a guest composer. Sea of Stars looks like the perfect game to play on a portable system, and I’ll be definitely checking it out on Steam Deck and Nintendo Switch next year. Every bit of gameplay showcased looks very polished, and after The Messenger, I’m confident in the studio.

    Returnal

Returnal is another one of Sony’s PS5-only games making its way to PC. Housemarque’s action roguelike blends in bullet hell with shooters to deliver an amazing experience that also has co-op support. I adored this on PS5, but am very curious to see how it runs and looks on Steam Deck given how reliant it was on the PS5’s SSD. This is one of the best Sony games in years, and I’m glad to see it come to PC in 2023. Hopefully the wait isn’t too long.

    Octopath Traveler II

While Octopath Traveler was a Switch exclusive for many months before it hit PC, Octopath Traveler II is launching on Switch, PC, and PlayStation platforms from day one. The HD 2D aesthetic of the original game is gorgeous on more powerful systems, and it shines on Steam Deck. Octopath Traveler II is more ambitious in its scope, and the turn-based JRPG will almost certainly be a joy to play on Steam Deck from day one. I already pre-ordered this one so I will be playing it as soon as possible.

    Wild Hearts

Koei Tecmo’s Toukiden series is one I adored on PS Vita years ago. With Capcom’s Monster Hunter series finally exploding in success worldwide thanks to Monster Hunter World, more developers and publishers want to try and capitalize on the audience. EA’s Originals label is working with Koei Tecmo for Wild Hearts that aims to be a modern hunting game with some building mechanics. I love the work this team does, so this is one game I’m looking forward to playing. I enjoy these kinds of games on a portable as well so the Steam Deck is how I hope to experience Wild Hearts.

    Company of Heroes III

I was already excited to see where Relic would take Company of Heroes for a new entry, but the fact that it has been announced for consoles already gives me hope that it will control really well on Steam Deck. The legendary series with real-time strategy gameplay looks like it will finally deliver a modern take on the genre, and I can’t wait to check it out in February. Hopefully the delay allows for a more polished experience at launch.

I can’t wait to see what Valve brings to the Steam Deck with software updates next year, and also for how developers start bringing more optimizations to their games for the handheld system. In its first year, the Steam Deck dramatically improved since launch and 2023 will likely be even better. What are you looking forward to playing on Steam Deck in 2023?

The Top 10 Best Steam Deck Games of 2022 – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

When Valve revealed the Steam Deck, I didn’t think it would end up being one of my most used systems of 2022, but here we are. This year has seen some huge releases on PC across new games, ports of console games, and more. Since this is the first year the Steam Deck has been on the market, I wanted to highlight the best games of 2022 that you can play on Steam Deck. As with the other features I do, this is my list, and I’d love to know your top 10 Steam Deck games of 2022. This list is in no particular order.

    Elden Ring

Elden Ring took over my life for at least two months earlier in the year. I still think about it often and listen to the music when I crave the world again. Having played Elden Ring on all platforms, I’m still super impressed with how good it was on Steam Deck when I played it there. Elden Ring’s hype was absolutely deserved, and I hope it sees some new expansions or DLC in 2023. My Steam Deck and PS5 are ready.

    Vampire Survivors

When I reviewed Vampire Survivors, I said Valve should just pay poncle to have it pre-installed on every Steam Deck. The bullet hell meets time survival roguelike is an essential on every platform, and it remains one of the defining Steam Deck games of the year. I just hope it keeps getting more quality DLC like the first paid content it received a few weeks ago. Vampire Survivors is an absolute steal at its asking price.

    Pentiment

I bought Pentiment on Xbox the day it released despite it being in Game Pass because I wanted to support the newest game directed by Josh Sawyer of Obsidian. I loved what I played on Xbox, but didn’t make it very far. I knew it would be perfect for Steam Deck, and I was right. Pentiment is a joy to relax and dive deep into on Steam Deck. It is easily my favorite Xbox Game Studios release since Forza Horizon 4. I hope it gets an enhanced release next year with voice acting and that Microsoft lets Obsidian work on more games like this.

    Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales

Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered is one of Sony’s best ports, but Marvel’s Spider-Man Miles Morales is a much better and focused experience. It also is the perfect holiday game with its story. If you’ve never played Insomniac Games’ take on Spider-Man, this is an easy recommendation. Even if you, like me, enjoyed it on PS5, it is worth grabbing on Steam Deck because of how much fun it is to play on the go, and how good it looks.

    Final Fantasy VII Remake

final fantasy vii remake intergrade steam deck

Before I played Marvel’s Spider-Man, Final Fantasy VII Remake was the proper “next generation” feeling game on Steam Deck. It is already one of the best looking games on any platform in years, and I love that it is natively playable on a portable through Steam Deck. I can’t wait for the next part whenever Square Enix brings it to PC. Whether you’re new to Final Fantasy VII or have played the original, Final Fantasy VII Remake is sublime.

    God of War

When Sony started porting games to PC, I expected a few smaller titles with one-off AAA games every year or so. I was thankfully wrong because we got a fantastic PC port of one of the best games in the last few years with Sony Santa Monica’s God of War (2018) hitting PC early this year. God of War remains one of the best looking games on any platform, and it is gorgeous on Steam Deck delivering the complete experience without much compromise on the go.

    Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak

monster hunter rise sunbreak gameplay screenshot

Another early 2022 release, Monster Hunter Rise delivered a massively improved version of the game I put hundreds of hours into on Switch. With the big Sunbreak expansion, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak teleported to the top of my games of 2022. I played the entire expansion on Steam Deck pre-release with almost no issues, and it remains a brilliant experience with all title updates even today on Steam Deck.

    PowerWash Simulator

    powerwash simulator

I feel very conflicted writing about PowerWash Simulator as one of the best Steam Deck games of 2022 because I initially wrote it off as a meme game when a friend of mine kept pestering me about it. I definitely regret that, because I ended up playing quite a bit of it on Xbox Series X. I still don’t think it controls well on Xbox, but was blown away by how good it felt on Steam Deck once I forced gyro controls through Steam input. PowerWash Simulator is a zen game I keep coming back to while listening to podcasts and music. I’m looking forward to revisiting it on Switch soon.

    OlliOlli World

    olliolli world switch review

OlliOlli World on Steam Deck is the best portable way to play Roll7’s newest skateboarding experience. It looks and runs a lot better than Switch, and feels great with proper full-sized analog sticks. I adore this game, and it is one of the easiest recommendations for everyone who owns a Steam Deck and wants a quality arcade style skateboarding game. While the base game was already brilliant, it was enhanced by two DLC packs that elevated the experience further.

    Death Stranding Director’s Cut

    death stranding directors cut

Death Stranding Director’s Cut is an enhanced version of Kojima Productions’ brilliant action adventure game. While I recommend playing this on the best hardware you have since it is one of the most gorgeous games, the gameplay perfectly suits portable play. You can boot it up quickly to do a delivery or two on the go. I’d recommend Death Stranding Director’s Cut on Steam Deck for a replay or playing on the go alongside your main PC version or a PS5 version if you have that option. It really is one of the best showcases for the handheld though.

2023 is shaping up to have a massive set of games hit PC right from the start. There are many I’m grabbing day one for sure. What are you looking forward to playing on Steam Deck next year and what did you enjoy playing this year?

  • The Best Nintendo Switch Physical Releases of 2022 – SwitchArcade Special – TouchArcade

The Best Nintendo Switch Physical Releases of 2022 – SwitchArcade Special – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Every year, it feels like the Nintendo Switch is having its best year when it comes to releases across all formats. More and more games are released physically through boutique publishers, large scale retailers, and developers’ own storefronts. For this feature, I’m going to highlight my favorite physical releases including a bonus one from Japan. If you’ve been reading prior SwitchArcade Specials on physical releases, XSEED Games and NIS America are regulars who return for the feature in 2022. Here are the top 5 physical releases on Nintendo Switch in no particular order with one bonus at the end.

    Cuphead

The wait for a Cuphead physical has been almost as painful as when I tried beating the entire game with a drifting Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. I own Cuphead on every platform, but wasn’t going to pass up a chance at owning a Switch physical of the game with DLC on cartridge. For this release, iam8bit and Studio MDHR have done collectible comic art cards, a membership card, reversible art, and the game with DLC on cartridge. This is one of the best physical releases iam8bit has done yet. If you skipped the digital release, your wait has been worth it for this quality package.

    Rune Factory 5

Xseed Games is one of the few publishers left that has consistently been shipping instruction booklets with its physical releases. With Rune Factory 5, the publisher included a color instruction manual with art, the full game on cartridge, and a reversible cover sheet. I remember Rune Factory 4 on 3DS also had a nice booklet and reversible art sheet. I’m glad that Xseed Games is continuing that tradition, and hope to see it return with Rune Factory 3 Special next year. If you bought the limited edition, it even included exclusive DLC on cartridge which is something you don’t usually see on Switch.

    Two Point Campus

Sega is hard to predict with physical releases on console, but the publisher went all out for Two Point Campus. The launch edition on console platforms includes a university prospectus, a foldout map, and bonus DLC for Two Point Campus and Two Point Hospital. The outer box for the Two Point Campus Early Enrollment Edition also has unique art. This was priced the same as the standard digital release making it an even better deal. I hope Sega does a new physical release with all DLC on cartridge once post-launch support has ended. The current Space Academy DLC is excellent if you haven’t gotten it yet.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero

Another year, another Falcom release from NIS America with some lovely extras. The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero on Nintendo Switch includes a small artbook, a digital soundtrack sampler, and a reversible cover for the game. This release of The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero is also a superb version of the game with all the important PC features. If you haven’t gotten into Trails yet, this is a great entry point as well and it has a budget asking price with all these bonuses included.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge

Ever since it was revealed, I was hoping Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge would get a large-scale physical release on all platforms. It was confirmed to have one through Merge Games in Europe, Happinet in Japan, and Limited Run Games in the USA. I ordered the physical release on Switch from both Europe and Japan to ensure it reaches me on time, and I was able to get it soon after launch. This is a double-feature because both the European and Japanese physical release are worth highlighting. The Japanese one which you can see above from Shaun’s photograph includes the complete soundtrack, acrylic stands, and the game on cartridge. The European physical pictured below has a color booklet, a keychain, reversible art, and the game on cartridge. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge also happens to be one of my favorite games in years, and I recently bought the PS5 physical for my collection.

    Bonus: Bayonetta 1

If you were lucky enough to pre-order the Japanese Bayonetta 2 Infinite Climax Edition a few years ago, you would’ve had a physical version of the first Bayonetta for Nintendo Switch. Every other release across regions included the second game on cartridge and a code for the original Bayonetta. With the hype around Bayonetta 3, Nintendo did a physical print run of the original Bayonetta for Switch in all regions. While the launch was messed up in Europe, it has been easy to buy in North America and Japan. I got this North American release to support Bayonetta even though I own a copy of that collector’s edition from Japan which included the physical. This specific physical release isn’t anything special when it comes to bonus content, but I’m glad Bayonetta fans have an easier and cheaper way to own a physical version of the first entry. I know many missed out on the Japanese special edition.

With 2022 done, I want to know what you thought of the Switch library this year across digital and physical releases. It feels like we are getting more physical releases than ever before despite many people claiming physical media is dead. With many interesting ports and retail releases, what were your favorite releases of the year and did you grab any of the physical releases highlighted in this feature?

(Special thanks to my friend @thoraxes for help with photographs for Cuphead, Rune Factory 5, Bayonetta 1, and The Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero)

  • Reviews Featuring ‘River City Girls 2’ and ‘Panda Punch’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

Reviews Featuring ‘River City Girls 2’ and ‘Panda Punch’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 27th, 2022. In today’s article, I finally bang out a few reviews I have been working on over the holidays. River City Girls 2, Mortal Shell, Panda Punch, and The Tale of Clouds and Wind get evaluated today. After that, we have a bunch of dubious new releases to look at, plus some new and expiring sales. Let’s go!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    River City Girls 2 ($39.99)

Some sequels completely change things up, recontextualizing the series and taking things in a bold, new direction. That’s not the kind of sequel River City Girls 2 is. No, this is the more usual kind of sequel. That stuff you liked in the first game? It’s here, and there’s more of it. The stuff you didn’t like? Some of it fixed. Some of it isn’t. If you liked the first game, you’ll like this one. If you didn’t? I somewhat doubt this one will hit you any better. Unless your very specific problem with the first game was a lack of online play. That one is fixed.

Anyway, Sabu finds out about the girls did to his daughter and, more importantly, his criminal empire in the first game. He’s mad so he breaks out of prison and proceeds to make the girls’ lives hell in the pettiest possible ways. The girls ultimately decide to solve the problem the way they usually do, and this time they have some extra help. You’ll visit a variety of locations, most of which will be very familiar if you played the first game. You’ll also learn a variety of moves, most of which will be very familiar if you played the first game. You’ll fight a number of different enemies. most of… well, you get it. There’s a story reason for the recycling, but there’s unquestionably a lot of it.

Still, there is enough new stuff here to keep you entertained, and the new characters help a lot with that. Misako and Kyoko are fun heroes, and following their cartoonish rampage is just as enjoyable here as it was in the first game. Riki, Kunio, Marian, and Provie don’t add much to the story but they do give you some gameplay variety that is quite welcome. Just like in the first game, you can level up your stats and expand your arsenal by buying things from shops, and leveling up all six characters will keep you playing long past the credits.

I wasn’t as keen on the first game as some were, and I find myself feeling the same way about this game. I’m not in love with the way combat flows, and I’m not a big fan of the way WayForward sets up their boss battles in general. Too much waiting around, and the bosses take way too many hits to go down. It’s not bad or anything, but compared to how games like Streets of Rage 4 and Shredder’s Revenge flow with the minute-to-minute action, River City Girls 2 comes up short for me. It doesn’t help that the game’s technical performance is even worse than the Switch version of the first game. There are areas and situations where the framerate dips get too obvious to ignore.

River City Girls 2 is more River City Girls, with all the good and bad that implies. The expanded playable roster and some minor gameplay tweaks are appreciated, along with the ability to play with others online, but so much here is the same that you probably don’t even need to read a review to know if you’ll like it or not. Want another reason to stomp around River City with Misako and Kyoko? Here it is. Looking for the next great brawler after Shredder’s Revenge? You’ll have to keep waiting.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Panda Punch ($4.99)

Panda Punch has an idea, and it basically translates to punching around boxes to press down switches and serve as platforms. And to the game’s credit, it does a decent enough job with that. It looks okay, it plays okay, the level designs are amusing enough. It does what you want a five dollar Switch platformer to do, more or less. The levels just kind of roll into each other, giving the feeling of a large interconnected world, but it’s actually fairly linear on the whole.

Panda Punch is one of those games where you can spend an evening picking your way through it and have a fun enough time doing so, only to find your brain has almost entirely deleted the experience from your memories by the next morning. For the meager price it’s asking, I suppose that’s acceptable. Nothing I’d recommend rushing out and buying, but you could do a lot worse with your time and money than picking this up and bashing around some crates.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Mortal Shell ($29.99)

You know, I don’t think Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls 3 are coming to the Nintendo Switch. Just a hunch. With that in mind, Souls fans who want to play something of the sort on their Switch consoles have to look elsewhere. I suspect the makers of Mortal Shell would like this to be the elsewhere those fans look, because this game really is nakedly paying homage to Dark Souls. There are a couple of extra gimmicks that involve inhabiting the bodies of fallen warriors and hardening yourself up to tank a hit, but by and large this is the Diet Pepsi version of Dark Souls. It’s a little clunkier, a lot less inventive, and you can’t help but wish you were playing the real thing instead.

Mortal Shell makes a decent transition to the Switch, and if there are Dark Souls fans out there who only own a Switch, need something else in the same vein, and don’t mind dropping a decent chunk of change, this might scratch the itch. Outside of that particular scenario, things get shakier. It doesn’t drop the ball in any serious ways, but there are lots of little things that add up to a game that just doesn’t feel as good to play as the game it wants to evoke. Worth a shot for the Souls faithful, but others should probably stick to the real thing.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

The Tale of Clouds and Wind (QUByte Classics) ($7.99)

QUByte has plucked another game from Piko’s library, this time the Taiwanese Mega Drive beat-em-up that sometimes goes under the name Water Margin but here is called The Tale of Clouds and Wind. It’s based on the classic Chinese novel, the same one that Konami’s Suikoden series drew inspiration from. Not that that is really important or anything, as you’ll just be walking from left to right beating the stuffing out of people. You can choose between three characters and play alone or with a friend via local multiplayer. It’s an okay game, nothing great, but it suffers from the same input lag QUByte’s other retro rereleases do.

The Tale of Clouds and Wind is a serviceable 16-bit beat-em-up, but not much more than that. Add in some emulation issues that result in control lag, and you’ve got something that can get the job done if needed but probably shouldn’t be relied on for such a task. Given the assortment of Capcom beat-em-ups available at a cheaper price on Switch, it’s hard to recommend this to any but those on the hunt for something less common to play from this era.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

    New Releases

    Xanchuchamel ($5.99)

This is a puzzle platformer whose main gimmick involves moving around blocks and other platforms to make your way through each stage. There are fifty stages in total set across five different worlds. As far as games with five-dollar Switch platformer energy go, this seems like it’s on the better end of things. Enough that I don’t even mind that it’s a touch higher than a fiver.

WRC Generations – The Official Game ($39.99)

Well hey, another WRC game. It seems to have enjoyed decent reviews on other platforms, but the last couple of releases in this series on Switch have suffered greatly in the transition. Still, if you enjoyed the previous game in the series on our little hybrid platform, you’ll probably be able to deal with whatever has been sacrificed here. That aside, this one has even more content than the last one so you’ll be racing away for quite some time.

    Everybody’s Home Run Derby ($5.00)

This is exactly what it looks like, and nothing more. Just a simple home run derby game for up to four players via local multiplayer. There are a variety of characters to choose from. Yes, that’s about it.

    Grabitoons! ($7.99)

Here’s a party game with fifteen different mini-games that can be enjoyed by up to four players in local multiplayer. The gimmick seems to be the over-sized grabby hands your characters have. You can unlock extra customization bits, which is about usual for this sort of thing. It can’t be played in handheld mode, so presumably you’ll need the motion control stuff for this one.

Otoko Cross: Pretty Boys Klondike Solitaire ($6.99)

The second in the Otoko Cross line brings the titular Pretty Boys to a game of Klondike Solitaire. Play some solitaire and unlock some new outfits for the boys. That’s really all there is to it, so if that sounds like your jam then here you go.

    Boxer ($9.99)

Aw heck, it’s Sabec. It’s another no-frills affair from this publisher, setting you against seven different boxers. It doesn’t look very fancy, and given Sabec’s track record it probably doesn’t play very fancy either.

    Cryght ($1.50)

A buck-fifty and it sure looks like it. This game has more than one hundred and thirty stages, and you’re tasked with reaching the crystal however you can on each of them. It’s not short on rough edges, but I suppose you don’t have to get much out of it to get your money’s worth.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

What a difference a day makes. I suppose there isn’t much left to put on sale at this point. The highlight today is the new low price on Darkest Dungeon, so if you’re interested in the game and somehow held out this long, here’s your shot. Over in the outbox, fans of first-person shooters will want to strongly consider DUSK before its latest sale wraps up. Check those lists!

‘Leave Me Alone’: Listen To The Shocking 911 Call Jesse James’ Pregnant Wife Bonnie Rotten Made Days Before Filing For Restraining Order

However, things did not go as planned and Rotten filed for divorce a second time on December 6. The following day, she filed for a restraining order and described the alleged November 28 incident in detail.

She said the two had been arguing over texts she found on his phone. At one point, she claimed James “grabbed me and put me in a headlock and moved me from out of the door. He then moved me out of the way, and we walked to the door to leave the bedroom and he slammed my arm inside the door of the bedroom door.”

As RadarOnline.com first reported, Rotten dismissed the second divorce and reconciled once again with James. Last week, the two were spotted at dinner with friends.

  • ‘Sports Story’, ‘Pixel Cup Soccer’, and a Massive List of New Sales – TouchArcade

‘Sports Story’, ‘Pixel Cup Soccer’, and a Massive List of New Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 26th, 2022. Whatever plans I had for today’s article went right out the window thanks to Christmas stuff and roughly a billion new sales popping up over the weekend. I’ve got the new releases that hit since Friday for you to look at, plus a massive yet somehow largely curated list of sales. And that is pretty much it! But that’s not bad for Boxing Day, right? Right. Let’s go!

    New Releases

    Sports Story ($14.99)

The long-awaited follow-up to Golf Story hit late last week, bringing a variety of sports mashed up with RPG mechanics for your playing pleasure. Golf, tennis, BMX, cricket, fishing, and more are here. Unlock them, play them, meet a wild array of wacky characters, and prove you’ve got what it takes to rise to the top of the sporting world in this athletic adventure.

Pixel Cup Soccer – Ultimate Edition ($16.99)

If you like the more arcade-style takes on sports, you may want to take a look at Pixel Cup Soccer. Play alone and dive into the Career Mode, or play with up to eight players via local multiplayer in a variety of modes. There are a lot of low-tier soccer games on the eShop, and that can make it hard to tell what is good or not at a glance. Trust me when I say that this is one of the good ones.

Moorhuhn Pirates – Crazy Chicken Pirates ($6.99)

This is one of the traditional-style Moorhuhn games, which is to say it’s a shooting gallery. Shoot all the chicken pirates and try to rack up the points. Nothing too fancy, but it’s amusing enough thanks to its goofy sense of humor. A reasonable price point sure doesn’t hurt.

    Cats Puzzle ($9.99)

Another one of these weak puzzle games. Just rearrange the squares to set the picture right. Like a jigsaw puzzle but no jig. Yes, I used that line before. If these publishers can recycle games, I can recycle descriptions.

Street Drag Racing Car Driving Simulator 2022 Games ($4.99)

Another garbage game from Midnight Works with another garbage word salad title. It’s a poor racing game that doesn’t even have button controls because the developer couldn’t be bothered to add them to this low-effort port. Throw it in the bin.

Supreme Car Race on Highway Simulator – Ultimate Driving Games Poly Experience ($1.99)

And here is some junk from INSTAMARKETINGANDGAME, also with a title that is SEO word salad. It’s just a lane-based auto-runner. Collect coins, unlock more cars, and enjoy the richness of gameplay that a virtually unmodified Unity Asset Store template gets you. Touch controls only, because… well, you know why. At least it’s only two bucks, but that could also get you a tasty Snickers bar. Choose wisely.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

There are, not fooling, more than fifteen-hundred new sales on the eShop since we last spoke. I can not and will not list them all, so consider this list heavily curated. Despite my efforts in that regard, this still ended up being a ridiculous list of games. Check the eShop to see if anything else you were interested in is on sale. You might be pleasantly surprised.

‘Dead Cells+’, ‘Another Eden’, ‘Diablo Immortal’, ‘Royal Match’, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Well, we’re right in the meat of the end-of-year holiday sandwich. There aren’t usually a ton of updates around this time, but I’ve found some for you to look over anyway Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

    Outlanders,

A flood of mysterious origins has left five clans of mountain folk trying to recover. This latest update brings in Outlanders Chronicles Volume II, titled Flood and Fire. That translates to six new levels that tell the story of the clans learning to band together and discovering the source behind the flood. You can also enjoy these new leaders and building styles in Sandbox mode, if you like.

    Wylde Flowers,

The Endless Seasons and Romance update comes to Wylde Flowers and seeks to rejuvenate the game for those who have perhaps wandered off. The town is preparing for a Spring Fling festival, and there’s a lot happening as a result. You can now improve your standing in the coven and become Keeper of the Wheel, which allows you to change the seasons as you see fit. There’s also some new spouse dialogue and dates to enjoy, and a few other bits and bobs to discover.

    Diablo Immortal, Free

Well, this is almost two weeks old now, but I just saw it. Needs must, so here it is. The Terror’s Tide update adds a new zone and story to the game, some new leveling mechanics, a couple of events, five new Legendary Gems for rich people to blow their money on, and a few other winter-related things that may or may not still be going on as you read this. Oh, and some bug fixes and other little improvements. The kids love those.

    Dead Cells+,

This update to the Apple Arcade version of Dead Cells brings in the same stuff that hit the regular version of the game a few weeks back. Enter a new gold-plated biome by diving into a flashy chest and battle some new enemies that are looking to lighten your pockets by any means possible. The theme continues with new gold-based weapons and mutations, too. There are some new accessibility features, the Panchaku balancing update, and performance improvements for AppleTV to enable 60 frames per second gameplay. Not bad.

    Royal Match, Free

It has been brought to my attention that I’ve made an absolute mockery of the Obligatory Free-to-Play Matching Puzzle updates by not including them in the last couple of articles, so I have an extra or two in the pipe today. Here’s the first, and it’s Royal Match. You get one hundred new levels to play, with a new Winter Camp area that will help you feel the chill of the season virtually in case reality isn’t enough for you. There’s that box ticked.

    Crash of Cars, Free

Here’s a partly holiday-tinged update to Crash of Cars, complete with six new cars to play with. Frozen Vale is back for a limited time along with the Santa Sleigh, but I imagine they won’t be around too much longer. There are also some new quests to complete, and a new VFX skin. Not really a game that needs new stuff really, but it’s always nice to see that kind of thing.

    ANOTHER EDEN, Free

Another Eden has a collaboration event going on with the Tales series right now, so that’s fun. This update adds Crown of the Pale Dawn to that end, along with new encounters with Moonlight Flower Hismena and new weapons for the Nagi Octofighter character class. There’s also a new Fateful Encounter that touts the best of 2022 for those willing to pay for it. I haven’t checked in on this game in a while, but maybe I should just to see what there is to catch up on.

    AFK Arena, Free

Whenever I remember Another Eden, I also tend to remember AFK Arena. These two games are joined at the neural hip in my brain, and I have no idea why. Anyway, this is a fairly usual update for AFK Arena. A new character in the form of Celestial hero Veithael – The Shining Sword, matching Bountiful Trials for test play purposes, and some new content to challenge. There’s a lot more besides that, so give it a look if you’re particularly curious.

    Toon Blast, Free

I did promise more than one Obligatory Free-to-Play Matching Puzzle update, so here is the other one. It’s Toon Blast, and it has the usual fifty new levels to play. Some sort of business about slippery slopes, and I’m not going to put in the work to find out if that’s intended to be taken literally or metaphorically. Anyway, that settles it. I’m sure I didn’t forget anything this week, so let’s bring things to a close.

    Asphalt 9: Legends, Free

Two new season-appropriate racing seasons to dive into, with the chilly Winterfest and rolling into Lunar New Year festivities. Beyond that, it’s up to you to rebuild the Syndicate, unlocking new decals and cars as you go. There are eight new cars to enjoy, including the Bugatti Bolide, Ares S1, the McLaren 650S GT3, and more. Asphalt 9: Legends also defies reality by adding animated decals. I mean, why not? We have the technology. It’s not like you’ll violate traffic laws by playing a video game.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week, and see you next year!

Major Mr Traffic Version 2.0 Update Went Live Over the Weekend Bringing New Progression, UI Changes, New Costumes, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Mr Traffic (Free) from Dashy Crashy (Free) developer Dumpling Design hit iOS earlier this year for free with an Android version arriving a week later. Since launch, Mr Traffic has been updated with new features, cosmetics, and more. There were even ad changes. Over the weekend, the Mr Traffic 2.0 update hit bringing in progression system changes, holiday costumes, a new Lucky Box IAP, changes to make certain aspects simpler, and more.

Any in app purchase will now remove ads permanently. Other changes include the removal of coins, special traffic (sports, trucks, and taxis). The Time Out meter has been removed alongside Costume Skills being disabled to make things less complex. Mr Traffic is free to play. You can grab it on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Head over to our forum thread for Mr Traffic here for discussion around the game. Have you played Dashy Crashy or Mr Traffic from Dumpling Design yet?

  • ‘Melatonin’, ‘Hyper Gunsport’, Plus Today’s Other New Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

‘Melatonin’, ‘Hyper Gunsport’, Plus Today’s Other New Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 23rd, 2022. It’s the last pre-Christmas edition, and while I’m sure we’ll see a couple more indie games shadow-dropping today (probably one very big one), I’ll have to catch up on them later. I’ll be all nestled in bed by the time you read this, potentially dreaming of sugar plums? I don’t know. Anyway, summaries of all those new games I know of. A big list of new sales. Some expiring sales. That’s the bunch. Let’s jingle some bells!

    New Releases

    Melatonin ($14.99)

This is a rhythm game with twenty different levels to play, each one presenting its own dream-inspired challenge. The visuals have a very distinct look to them, and if you’re looking for something after the story is finished there are unlockable Challenge Modes and Mash-Ups, plus a level editor and Practice Mode. Mikhail’s been playing this one and tells me it has Rhythm Heaven vibes, and those are good vibes to be having. He’ll have a review for us sooner or later.

    Hyper Gunsport ($24.99)

I’m sure the Stadia software line-up needs to introduction to anyone, given how wildly successful the console was. We’ve all played its many hits to exhaustion, but now that the system is winding down, what do do about some of those exclusives? Necrosoft’s Gunsport will at least live on through this sequel, Hyper Gunsport. It’s kind of like volleyball, but with guns. Up to four players can join in via local multiplayer, and it’s extremely fun. If you like playing over-the-top sports games with your friends or family, you might want to give this a look.

    Astronomical Club For Queers ($9.99)

A rather simple adventure game with a premise well-described by its title. After a flood, a civet named Louie is staying at a friend’s house. Other friends gather at the house and together they listen to a podcast and wait for the approaching Halley’s Comet. A short and sweet tale about friendship and understanding, in case you need something like that today.

Risk Your Life to Get Your Dinner Back -Nyanzou Action Game- ($1.00)

That may well be one of the most compelling titles I’ve ever seen on a video game. We can all understand the pangs of hunger from an empty stomach, and the feelings of rage and frustration if our hard-earned sustenance is absconded with by some base fiend. If we cannot recover our food, we will certainly die. Thus, a certain amount of risk for the sake of recovering our valuable caloric intake is warranted. Thought-provoking stuff. Shame the title is attached to a rather shabby three-stage auto-runner. Well, it’s a buck. You get what you pay for.

    Roller Katz: BF – Episode 1 ($4.99)

I can’t really make heads or tails of this one. You’re skating through a 3D world and can do a variety of tricks. You can also attack enemies and explore various paths. Judging by the episodic title and the low price, I’m guessing this isn’t very long. But I really can’t say for sure as I haven’t played it and don’t see a lot of information online about it. Proceed with caution.

    Truck Simulator 3 ($12.99)

BoomHits has another driving game, and it’s the publisher’s third kick at its Truck Simulator series in particular. Pretty much the usual thing from these folks, with ten vehicles to drive, some decent-sized spaces to drive in, and a bunch of missions to complete. It will likely be deeply discounted within weeks.

    Zombie Survival ($3.99)

Well hey, at least it’s a little different from Cooking & Publishing’s usual template. This one is a very brief visual novel style thing where you make your choices and uncover twenty different endings with four different characters. Probably not very good, going on this publisher’s history.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

This is but a selection of the games on sale today, as you’ll find many more deals from Capcom, Idea Factory, the Pixel Game Maker Series, and others if you go looking. For now, check the list of new sales here to see what’s notable and hitting new low prices. There’s also the weekend outbox, but there isn’t much in there.

‘Figure Fantasy’ Teams Up with ‘DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme Venus Vacation’ to Welcome Marie Rose and Honoka Into the Fray – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

The Figure Fantasy X DEAD OR ALIVE Xtreme Venus Vacation Fantastic Collab is, as the name suggests, an exciting new crossover event between the hit fighting game franchise and Komoe Technology Limited’s figurine-themed RPG on mobile. Players can expect new figurines joining the fight along with limited-time dungeons and other in-game events throughout the crossover.

Players can look forward to a special drop rate for GALATEA Militarist figurine Marie Rose. They can also expect to add Honoka, a Defender figurine by SNOW-A, into their lineup of figures during the crossover. Promoting Marie Rose will reward players with special in-game goodies and the collab limited special edition, “Devil’s Whisper Ver.”

As for the limited-time events, the “Ignite! Fireworks Festival” lets players boost “Current Excitement” while collecting Fireworks to score Honoka, adornments, and exclusive badges. Players can also redeem Marie Rose at the “Sightseeing Redemption Office” when they use their collected “The Rose Adornments”. And finally, players can put their skills to the test in the exclusive Story Dungeon “Island Vacation” for more in-game goodies.

There are plenty of other surprises in store for you as Figure Fantasy ends the year with a bang, so if you’re eager to join in on all the festivities, you can download Figure Fantasy on the iOS App Store and on the Google Play Store for Android devices. It’s a free-to-play game with in-app purchases.

  • ‘Sail Forth’, ‘Sonority’, ‘Metal Hawk’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

‘Sail Forth’, ‘Sonority’, ‘Metal Hawk’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 22nd, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve once again got several new releases to check out. There were a couple of solid shadow drops, but there isn’t a whole lot very exciting beyond that. We’ll go through everything anyway, because that’s what we do. After that, we have an assortment of new sales to look at along with a few expiring ones. Let’s get jolly!

    New Releases

    Sail Forth ($19.99)

Who’s up for a high seas adventure? Sail Forth sure looks like a cool one, too. Explore a huge ocean, discover various islands and their inhabitants, and build your fleet of ships as you pursue loot and and solve mysteries. This one looks to have a lot of elements packed into it, and I’m hoping to dive in deep for a full review soon.

    Sonority ($19.99)

Esther embarks on a quest to help out her friend, but unlike other adventurers she isn’t packing a sword and shield. No, Esther has brought her pan flute with her. And it’s a lucky thing she did, as it turns out all of the puzzles in this game involve music. You’ll have to use your musical ear (oh well that’s me out) or symbols (oh thank goodness, I am saved) to arrange the musical notes in the correct order to make your way forward. It certainly has a gimmick to call its own, but I’d have to put my hands on the game to tell you how well it works.

    Arcade Archives Metal Hawk ($7.99)

This 1988 Namco release is another interesting variant on the shooter genre. You pilot a helicopter and need to make your away around maps destroying various targets. You can change your elevation, which is accompanied by a scaling effect. The arcade cabinet was produced in very limited numbers and it never had any home ports before now, so this is a rather nice rarity.

    Windstorm: An Unexpected Arrival ($29.99)

Another horse game, and I’d imagine this is rather similar to the previous Windstorm release. Build your archery and riding skills and take part in fifteen quests set at the Kaltenbach estate, or just ride around and explore as you like. Fans of Windstorm or just general horse lovers will probably find things to like here.

    Grappling Dash ($9.99)

EpiXR finds yet another way to trot out its Aery engine, this time with a grappling hook theme. Use your handy grapple gun to move from point to point in several large stages, sniffing out secrets as you go. You can only grapple on to crystals at set positions, so it isn’t quite as freeform as you might think. Well, I’m sure some people will dig it.

    Popplings ($5.99)

This is a competitive puzzle game that seems to be throwing back to early 90s PC games visually. This is an aesthetic that I am sure appeals to some folks, but it doesn’t do a lot for me. Anyway, it looks to be a fairly conventional spin on a color matching game, with you shooting pieces from the bottom of the well and trying to clear pieces. It has local multiplayer support in addition to its story mode, plus a puzzle editor mode that allows you to make your own. Could be fun.

A Maiden Astrologer Divines the Future ($8.70)

Here’s another visual novel, this one about a maiden astrologer who gets swept up a series of events after she is visited by a girl named Maki. The game description in the eShop doesn’t give me much confidence about the quality of the localization here, which is becoming a bit of a problem with these lower-cost visual novel releases of late.

    Kawaii Slime Arena ($5.99)

This is a, er, modest arena shooter where you play as an anime girl who has to shoot slimes. There are a number of different weapons you can unlock and use, among other power-ups and equipment that can be earned. Probably not going to win any Keighleys anytime soon, but I’m sure some people will have at least a bit of fun with it.

    Words in Word ($9.99)

Yes, that’s a word game alright. Find the words in the words. There are more than a thousand words to find words in, which is a lot of words. And yet here I am struggling to find words to describe this. It offers a local co-op multiplayer mode so you can bring in a friend to look for words while you’re looking for words in words.

Drone Race Simulator Pilot Flight School Airplane Games Jet 2023 ($4.99)

Another piece of Purple Monkey Dishwasher garbage from VG Games, the publisher who has never ever heard of Midnight Works. Race some drones. I recommend saving your fiver for almost anything else. Anything.

Major Steam Deck Update Adds New Performance Options, Big Desktop Mode Improvements, Storage Changes, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Today, Valve pushed out one of the biggest updates for SteamOS on Steam Deck since launching the device. This update has tons of behind the scenes improvements and upgrades, but the other highlights include massive improvements for Desktop Mode, new performance profile options like enabling Screen Tearing for improved latency, a horizontal HUD that fits in the black bars for 16:9 games, TRIM for storage to improve write performance, and much more. While the system has changed a lot since launch, see what Jared thought of it’s back then here. If you recently bought a Steam Deck, check out my features on the best accessories for it and the best games to play on Steam Deck here.

The new screen tearing option is shown in the screenshot above from when I was playing PowerWash Simulator earlier today on Deck. The full patch notes for SteamOS 3.4 on Steam Deck are here. One thing to note is that Valve pushed out another small update to fix issues thanks to changing the SD card path. This change was reverted and will be implemented in the future with SteamOS 3.5. I’m glad that Valve shipped this before the holidays. The new horizontal HUD, also shown in the screenshot above, is great for not cluttering the gameplay. Stay tuned for more Steam Deck coverage as we begin our Game of the Year features in the near future. If you’ve gotten a Steam Deck recently, what do you think of it?

Each and every day new mobile games are hitting the App Store, and so each week we put together a big old list of all the best new releases of the past seven days. Back in the day the App Store would showcase the same games for a week, and then refresh those features each Thursday. Because of that developers got into the habit of releasing their games throughout Wednesday or very early Thursday in order to hopefully get one of those coveted features spots. Nowadays the App Store refreshes constantly, so the need for everyone to release all on the same day has diminished. Still, we’ve kept our weekly Wednesday night format as for years that’s the time people knew to check TouchArcade for the list of new games. And so without further ado please check out the full list of this week’s new games below, and let us know in the comments section which games you’ll be picking up!

‘The Punchuin’, ‘The Captain’, Plus Today’s Other Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 21st, 2022. Yesterday was a bit packed, but today is quiet like most Wednesdays. Probably busier than the average Wednesday, mind you. Five new releases to check out, plus some new sales. My day job is a bit busy today, so that’s really all there is to it. A quiet day isn’t so bad sometimes, of course. Let’s get to it!

    New Releases

    The Punchuin ($14.99)

A 2D action-adventure game starring a penguin who punches. Punchuin, you see. Explore the mountain, upgrade your penguin’s abilities, explore branching paths, and find lots of treasure. You can play alone or pull in a friend for some local co-op fun. It looks really nice but I haven’t had a chance to go hands-on with this game yet, so looks are all I can comment on.

    The Captain ($19.99)

Here’s the bad news: malevolent forces are on their way to the Earth to destroy it. The good news: you have exactly what is needed to put a stop to their machinations. The worst news: you’re lost on the opposite side of the galaxy with very few resources. If you don’t make it back to Earth in time, that’s the end. How you do that is up to you. You’ll have plenty of choices to make in this oddball hybrid of adventure game, turn-based strategy, and resource management. This is a well-liked game on other platforms and I’ve little doubt it will also find a following on the Switch.

    Headbangers in Holiday Hell ($5.99)

You’re a heavy metal-loving weirdo who has ended up on Santa’s naughty list, and instead of just ignoring you he has sent his minions after you to teach you a lesson. This is a top-down roguelite twin stick shooter with a Christmas/heavy metal theme, which I will admit I have not seen on the eShop before. It follows the usual rules, with a variety of weapons, procedurally generated levels, and lots of enemies to blast. Certainly a different sort of holiday game, if nothing else.

    Package Inc ($4.99)

A bit of a simulation game and a bit of a puzzle game, Package Inc challenges you to build a delivery system for an expanding city by connecting hubs and destinations in an efficient manner. It vaguely reminds me of games like Mini Metro, and that’s not a bad thing. It has a nice visual style, too. All for a fiver? Pretty good. Pretty, pretty good. It’s also available on mobile if you want to save a few bucks or prefer that platform for your puzzle-sim needs.

    Heaven’s Door ($3.99)

Cooking & Publishing, notorious merchants of trash games, have another bag of refuse for the eShop pile. This is the exact same template they always use, where you have to answer a series of questions, then repeat your answers without making a mistake. This time the framing is that you are at the gates of heaven and are being judged by some ugly-butt clip art angel.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Some new sales on EA games, Ubisoft games, Koei Tecmo games, and a few others. Samurai Warriors 5 and Atelier Sophie 2 would be my picks, but you do you. Check the lists carefully but keep some money in the wallet as we’re going to see more releases and sales in the next couple days.
