Game Freak on Working With Apple, a Potential Switch Port, Gear Project’s Future, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Earlier today, the legendary Pokémon developer Game Freak launched an enhanced version of its 3DS classic Pocket Card Jockey on Apple Arcade in the form of Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!. Over the last week, I’ve been playing it on multiple devices for review including checking out the early parts of the 3DS game once again to compare with this new version. I had a chance to talk to Masao Taya (Director Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!) and Masafumi Saito (General Manager Development Department 1) at Game Freak about today’s launch, working with Apple, a potential Nintendo Switch version, the future of Gear Project, and more.

TouchArcade: Pocket Card Jockey was one of the more interesting 3DS eShop exclusives. It also has quite a cult following outside Japan. When a trademark for Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! was spotted last month, a lot of people expected a sequel to potentially launch on Nintendo Switch. What led to the decision to bring it to Apple Arcade over other platforms?

Masao Taya: We released an F2P smartphone app version of Pocket Card Jockey in Japan, but we couldn’t adapt the game very well to the F2P style, it didn’t go well in business terms. After that I kept thinking about a way to make Pocket Card Jockey a success as a smartphone app or mobile game, but I had a lot of other (fun) work to do, so I didn’t do anything about it. While this was happening, Apple Arcade began to catch on in Japan. With Apple Arcade, which requires absolutely no in-app purchase beyond the subscription service fees, there was no need to forcefully remodel the game into an F2P style, so I decided to see if I could provide the real joy of playing Pocket Card Jockey with it.

I know that there are a lot of people who’d love to see a Nintendo Switch version, and porting it is one possibility, but right now our main focus is on Apple Arcade users enjoying it.

TA: The original Pocket Card Jockey was released on iOS in Japan, but it never saw an international release barring the 3DS version published by Nintendo. Were there plans to bring the original iOS release to the West at all years ago?

MT: No, we had no plans to do that. Like I said before, the smartphone app version we released in Japan was F2P, a model that required ongoing sales to secure the running costs, including server side maintenance. Given that it didn’t go so well in Japan, it would have been difficult to decide to expand it to the US and to Europe.

TA: Pocket Card Jockey was an interesting take on two different mechanics that worked perfectly. Has there been any change to the core mechanics for the Apple Arcade version barring bringing a dual screen game to single screen devices?

MT: The gameplay in this remake is essentially the same, but one point that’s different from the previous version is stamina control during races. In this release, stamina recovery cards are mixed into the solitaire depending on the positioning of the horse. The more stamina recovery cards there are in one position, the less energy there is to gain. So, the trade-off between stamina and energy is clearer than in the original.

You can play the game and win it without knowing this fact, but I think users will have more of a sense of wider strategies — like deciding in one race to focus on stamina recovery, or in another to go all out to gain energy at the risk of running out of stamina. Of course, if you make the right choice then your chance of winning increases. I hope users who are already familiar with the game keep this in mind when playing.

TA: Was there anything you couldn’t do for Pocket Card Jockey on 3DS that has now been possible with more powerful hardware on Apple Arcade devices barring the 3D races?

MT: The key point where we really made full use of the power of Apple products is the 3D screen. We’ve fine-tuned it so that it runs well even on slightly older devices, but also to enhance the rendering a bit more using the power of Apple devices with the new chips.

TA: The highlight of Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! for existing fans of the game is the 3D racing segments. What else should longtime fans expect in Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!?

MT: A feature of all Apple Arcade titles is the ability to smoothly share save data among several devices. So, you can play games at home on your iPad, Mac, or on a big screen with Apple TV, then easily carry on playing it out of the house with your iPhone.

The use of 3D for the race scenes goes beyond enhancing the rendering. The relative positions of the horses and the special cards shown with simple symbols on the previous version (on the lower screen in the Nintendo 3DS) can now be shown in the 3D space of the race scenes. So, while watching the fascination of the race, at the same time you can keep your eye on the cards to experience both hope and despair of collecting or missing said cards. That’s one point I quite like about this version.

TA: Are there any plans to add controller support to iOS and iPadOS?

MT: Nothing has been decided on that at this moment.

TA: How has it been working with the team at Apple for Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On? Were they involved from the start to help bring this to Apple Arcade?

MT: Apple regularly gave us advice during development. They gave us feedback on some English expressions that are difficult for us to notice, which was quite a big help. Regarding the gameplay, they constantly said how fascinating it is, which created a really good atmosphere for us as we carried on with the development.

TA: I enjoyed Game Freak’s Little Town Hero quite a bit on Nintendo Switch for its combat, designs, and music. Is there any chance that can come to mobile in the future?

MT: Thanks so much! Unfortunately, we don’t have any plans to do that at the moment, but as the director of Little Town Hero, I’m happy to hear how much you like it.

TA: Game Freak has a lot going on with recent Pokémon games including Pokémon Legends: Arceus that is my favorite game in the series. I wanted to know how the Gear Project at Game Freak has changed in the last few years and whether we can expect more of these more-creative smaller titles?

Masafumi Saito: The development scale of Pokémon Legends: Arceus and other Pokémon series games has grown, so having enough staff for Gear Projects has become an issue for Game Freak, but we have no intention of stopping work on making new games.

In recent years we’ve adopted a style of working on development in cooperation with other companies. We’re aiming to be able to work on bigger titles, as well as the smaller-scale ones, than we’ve had so far. We’re still going to bring out more games with the Gear Project that you can all look forward to!

TA: Can we expect more Gear Project titles to come to Apple Arcade on iOS in the future?

MS: This is our first game release on Apple Arcade, so firstly we want to hear the reactions of users who play it and see what they think of it. If it looks good, then of course there’s a good chance we’ll be able to provide other titles to Apple Arcade. I’m certainly hoping so!

Thanks to Masafumi Saito (General Manager Development Department 1) and Masao Taya (Director, Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On!) for their time here leading up to the launch of Pocket Card Jockey: Ride On! and also to Jennifer Tam at Apple for facilitating this interview.

‘Pascal’s Wager’ New iOS Update Adds Haptic Feedback Support for Cut-Scenes, Combat, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Pascal’s Wager ($3.99) recently had new DLC and a costume arrive through an update on iOS and Android. Tipsworks and Giant Games have been updating the game a ton since launch with new content and paid DLC. With the last major update adding Elena as a playable character with the option to play rearranged stages and more, I wasn’t sure what to expect from the game in the future. Today, we have a new iOS for the game bringing in RichTap Haptics support. This update brings in haptics for cut-scenes, combat, and more. I checked it out for a few minutes, and it is a great implementation on my iPhone. This update will go live for Android in the future.

If you’ve not played the recent DLC for the game, the Dance of the Throne DLC for Pascal’s Wager is priced at $1.99 on iOS and Android while Elena’s outfit ‘Enigma’ DLC is priced at $0.99. If you’ve not gotten the game yet yet, Pascal’s Wager is available on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. Read our review of it here. Here’s our forum thread for the game. I featured Pascal’s Wager as one of the best iOS games to play with keyboard and mouse. Do you play Pascal’s Wager often on mobile and have you played the recent DLC?

‘Persona 4 Golden’, ‘NeverAwake’, ‘A Space for the Unbound’, Plus More Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 19th, 2023. It’s Thursday, and that means we’ve got a lot of new releases to look at. For the first time this year, I’d say this is actually a really impressive lot of games. Probably more here I want to buy than I actually have money to buy. And tomorrow will add even more to the pile! Oh dear. After the usual summaries, we head over to the sales section to see what’s old and new. Let’s get to business!

    New Releases

    Persona 3 Portable ($19.99)

Persona 3 is the game that established the tone and style of the latter part of the series, but there’s a good chance those who came in with Persona 4 or Persona 5 haven’t played it yet. It’s a great JRPG, and this enhanced port of the PSP version of the game is a decent way to experience it. You lose some of the presentation punch of the PlayStation 2 version, but it’s far more user-friendly and offers the choice of a female protagonist who has her own social links to master. The upscaling here is a little iffy in places, but it’s hard to go wrong here for twenty bucks.

    Persona 4 Golden ($19.99)

Odds are good, however, that you’re more interested in this one. Here’s an enhanced port of the Vita version of Persona 4, also known as the one that got the Western market to pay attention to the series. Another top-shelf JRPG, and this one upscales a lot more cleanly than Persona 3 Portable. I’ll have a review of both of these games soon, but I can say upfront that the ports are well-done and if you like RPGs at all you really should play both of these games.

    NeverAwake ($24.99)

This is a twin-stick scrolling shoot-em-up whose eighty-plus stages are all drawn from the nightmares of a young girl. That means you’re going to be fighting a lot of vegetables, dogs, and dentists among other things. But they’re all weirded up, because they’re the nightmare versions of them. Each level is relatively short, giving this a lot of pick up and play appeal. As you put more time into the game, you’ll unlock more power-ups and upgrades to help smooth out the difficulty curve if needed. Heck, it even has a story that is worth paying attention to. This game has gotten a lot of praise on other platforms, and it’s easy to see why.

    Graze Counter GM ($14.99)

Here’s a vertically-scrolling bullet hell shooter that, as you could probably guess from the name, places a strong emphasis on getting as dangerously close to danger as you can without getting thwacked. Graze the enemy bullets to fill up your Counter Gauge, which you can then use to trigger some more powerful attacks. Enemies destroyed by those will leave behind stars that fill up your Break Gauge, and when that is full you can enter a special mode that temporarily enhances your abilities. Seven stages to play, more than a dozen unlockable ships to go with the default duo, and a bunch of modes add up to a really slick package for shoot-em-up fans.

A Space for the Unbound ($19.99)

Lots of good games today, I tell you. This one is an adventure game set in a small rural Indonesian town in the 1990s, where a supernatural event threatens the existence of a pair of high school sweethearts. They’ll have to investigate the town, talk to its residents, and unwind its mysteries if they want to get to the bottom of what’s happening to them. Mikhail’s going to have a review of this one for us fairly soon, so do look forward to that.

    Void Prison ($2.99)

Void Prison is a very simple game, but a very satisfying one. It’s a twin-stick shooter where your aim is to survive as long as you can. How it differs from the usual game of this sort is that enemies won’t actually kill you they hit you. Instead, they’ll push you. You see, the whole game takes place in a circular field that is constantly fluctuating in size. If you touch the edge, you’re dead. Some enemies leave behind temporary power-ups to give you a bit of a breather, but things get pretty chaotic in a hurry. For the price, it’s a lovely pick-up.

    Arcade Archives Tank Force ($7.99)

The follow-up to Tank Battalion and Battle City takes its second spin on the Nintendo Switch after being part of the Namco Museum collection released in the console’s first year. This has all the usual Arcade Archives features, and includes both the two-player and four-player variants of the game. It adds new enemies and boss battles to the familiar formula, but otherwise sticks to what worked in the previous games. Unless you’re very interested in some of the Arcade Archives-specific extras, you’re probably better off buying the frequently-on-sale Namco Museum if you want the best value for your money.

    Last Command ($14.99)

This is an unusual mix of bullet hell dodging and the classic Snake game. Avoid the enemy attacks and pick up the Data Points to throw some damage back in return. Collect power-ups to give yourself a better chance at survival, and make use of your dash ability to quickly zip out of harm’s way. It’s a hard one to explain in words, but if you check a video of it you’ll see what it’s like pretty quickly.

    A Matter of Principle ($3.99)

Touted as an interactive comic novel, A Matter of Principle follows the lives of Gavrilo Princip and Franz Ferdinand during the events leading up to moment when the former assassinated the latter and sparked the first world war. The art looks good, and I’m sure a lot of folks will find this a very educational experience. The low price certainly helps justify what is likely a one-and-done playthrough. One for the folks looking to study a bit of history today, I suppose.

    Smilemo ($9.99)

A challenging platformer featuring a little fellow named Smilemo. Make your way through the stages and collect the vaccine code to defeat the virus that is threatening the world. If you so much as touch anything infected with the virus, you’ll be sent flying back, continually bouncing as you hit previous obstacles. Absolutely infuriating stuff, but it’s easy to see why some have gotten very into it in its computer form. If you want a sadistic precision platformer today, this might be what you’re after.

    Car Parking Multiplayer ($29.99)

Bloody audacious, I’ll give them that. This is a port of a free-to-play mobile game, which you might be able to tell by the fact that you can’t play it in TV mode. Thirty dollars. They want thirty dollars for this. They didn’t remove the in-app purchases, and you can still buy consumable coins. Go give it a try on your mobile device of choice, and if after that you feel like dropping ten bucks more than a whole-butt Persona game on this low-effort port, then so be it. I am not the mayor of your wallet.

    Zumiman ($3.00)

The poorly-translated game description can’t decide whether the hero of this game is called Zumiman or Zoomyman, but I’m going to keep using Zumiman. Anyway, you control Zumiman. He uses water balloons that explode like bombs and splash the area with water. You need to use these to navigate the stages and defeat enemies. You can probably sort out which game this top-down action-puzzler pays homage to. It has fifty levels and three different difficulty levels to play on.

    Minimal Move ($11.99)

This is a puzzle game where you have to use two characters, each with their own unique skill, to solve each stage and make it to the exit. Kaiten can rotate blocks and Ido can move blocks side to side or up and down. You can control both characters alone or pull in a friend for some local co-op multiplayer. If you enjoy block-pusher puzzles, you might want to have a closer look at this. It seems well-made enough, though I haven’t had a chance to put hands on it myself.

    Rubber Bandits ($9.99)

A party game for up to four players via local or online multiplayer, Rubber Bandits sees you avoiding traps and escaping from the police as you try to grab as much loot as you can. The reviews for this are solid on other platforms so unless the developers have made some sort of grievous error in porting this to the Switch, party game fans should consider dropping a tenner to add another amusing game to their rotation.

    Hack and Shoot Heroes ($3.99)

The screenshots and description almost make this seem like a halfway competent effort, but then you see it’s a Benjamin Kistler game and all hope fades. Choose from six different heroes and try to fend off the hordes for as long as you can. Survive long enough and you’ll get to face off against the boss. There are three stages to complete. You can get different weapons and persistent upgrades, as is the style in this kind of game. Not fancy dining.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Nobody Saves the World has a new free update you should check out if you have the game. And if you don’t, it’s on sale right now. So… you know, do what you will there. Bandai Namco has a bunch of games on sale, and there are also a bunch of indie games discounted. Over in the outbox, the brief sale on Dragon Quest Treasures is coming to an end. Act now or wait until the next sale, which might be a ways off. There will be a lot more sales to consider tomorrow, so don’t blow all of your cash right now.

‘Ten Dates’, the Sequel to the Interactive Romantic Comedy ‘Five Dates’, Releases on February 14th – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Wales Interactive just revealed the first trailer for Ten Dates, the sequel to the interactive romantic comedy game Five Dates (Free). Ten Dates is due on Valentine’s day worldwide for mobile, PC, and consoles. Ten Dates features Misha from London who tricks her best friend Ryan into going on a speed dating event with her. It features real-time relationship status tracking that adapts the story, a streamer mode (likely not on mobile), and more. Watch the announcement trailer (via GodisaGeek) for Ten Dates from Wales Interactive below:

As of this writing, pre-orders and pre-registrations aren’t available yet. You can wishlist it on Steam and even sample the game through a free demo here. Check out the official website here. Wales Interactive have been bringing quality FMV games to multiple platforms including mobile over the years, and I’m looking forward to what else the studio has in the works for iOS and Android this year. I’m still a few releases behind on Wales Interactive’s catalogue. My recent favorite FMV game is definitely Square Enix’s The Centennial Case: A Shijima Story. Have you played Wales Interactive’s recent FMV games on mobile and did you play Five Dates when it hit iOS and Android?

‘Wings of Bluestar’, Plus the Latest Sales Featuring ‘LEGO Star Wars’ and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to a slightly shorter SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 18th, 2023. As readers of yesterday’s article may know, I had to go to the fancy hospital today. Nothing too serious, but it ate up a good chunk of my day. Enough that I didn’t have time to do any reviews. That wouldn’t be a problem if it hadn’t been an otherwise slow day today, but here we are. One new release, though it looks like a decent one. We also have the usual lists of new sales and expiring discounts to round things out. Such is how it goes sometimes. Let’s look at what we’ve got!

    New Releases

    Wings of Bluestar ($14.99)

Phew, another indie side-scrolling bullet hell shooter. I haven’t had the chance to play this one yet, but I’ve watched some videos and it certainly looks sound enough mechanically. There’s a heavy story emphasis in the game, and you’ll be treated to plenty of cutscenes and story as you make your way through its eight stages. There are two different pilots to choose from, and their ships have their own properties. You can also upgrade your weapons as you go. Throw in an assortment of unlockables and you have something shooter fans might want to have a closer look at. I know I will.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

A bit of the usual WB Games stuff in today’s list of new sales. It’s never a bad day to pick up LEGO Star Wars, Mortal Kombat 11, or LEGO City Undercover if you don’t happen to have them already. Beyond that, there are several indie games on sale. The outbox has several Arcade Archives games in it that may or may not ever be on sale again, and the cool dungeon crawling RPG Demon Gaze Extra is a great grab if you’re looking for some grinding fun. Check both of those lists as always.

‘Dragon Quest Champions’ Is a Brand-New ‘Dragon Quest’ RPG for Mobile From Square Enix and Koei Tecmo – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Last week, Square Enix announced a new Dragon Quest game for mobile with a full reveal planned for today. The live stream in Japanese revealed Dragon Quest Champions for iOS and Android made in collaboration with Koei Tecmo. Koei Tecmo has worked with Square Enix on the Dragon Quest Heroes action games in the past. Dragon Quest Champions is a brand-new Dragon Quest RPG set for release in Japan with closed beta sign-ups now live in Japan. Dragon Quest Champions is the first new Dragon Quest mobile release since Dragon Quest Builders ($27.99) hit the platform last year. There will be a solo mode and a mode with up to 50 players in total as well. Watch the live stream for the game reveal below:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1T3QzqFt620

If you’d like to try Dragon Quest Champions in Japan, you can sign up for the closed beta test here for iOS and Android. The official website has some gameplay screenshots and more information about the cast in Japanese with a confirmation that the game will be free (to play likely). As of this writing, a Dragon Quest Champions release date hasn’t been announced. Until we learn about a release date for Japan, I’m not going to be optimistic about an international launch. Until we learn more about Dragon Quest Champions, check out Dragon Quest Builders on the App Store for iOS here and Google Play for Android here. Have you played Dragon Quest Builders or any of the premium Dragon Quest numbered series ports on mobile yet?

Moonrider’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 17th, 2023. In today’s article, we’ve got a review of Joymasher and The Arcade Crew’s slick 16-bit action homage Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider. After that, there are a few new releases to look at, and the usual lists of new and expiring discounts on the eShop. Not the busiest of days, but the end of the week will make up for it. Let’s get to work!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider ($16.99)

Moonrider is developer Joymasher’s fourth release on the Nintendo Switch, following Oniken, Odallus, and Blazing Chrome. I wish I could say it was exactly on par with the latter, as Blazing Chrome was one of the better stabs at the run-and-gun genre I’ve seen from an indie developer. Moonrider isn’t quite that good, falling closer on the spectrum to Oniken and Odallus. That’s not a bad place to be, mind you. Those are both good games, after all. A solid bit of weekend entertainment.

While the robot ninja motif quickly calls games like Shinobi, Strider, Hagane, and perhaps even Ninja Gaiden to mind, its bones more closely resemble the Mega Man X series than anything else. After an introductory stage you can choose which order you tackle the next batch of stages in, and defeating the bosses in each will give you access to an assortment of extra weapons. You can also find optional upgrades hidden in each stage if you poke around. It’s also quite heavy on dashing and wall climbing. As homages to that mighty franchise go, it’s an enjoyable one. Unfortunately, it’s also just as brief as the average X game. You’ll likely wrap it up within a few hours, even if you’re trying to find everything.

Moonrider has an excellent presentation, and the controls are just as responsive as you would hope. The game throws out a lot of fun little twists as you make your way through its stages that ensure things always stay fresh. While it falls a bit short of the fantastic Blazing Chrome and ends a little earlier than I’d prefer, this is still a fine classic-style romp that fans of 2D action games will have no trouble getting into.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    New Releases

    Mrs. Cat Between Worlds ($4.99)

This is a pretty standard precision platformer, with all the moves and tricks you would expect. You actually get two games here, with fifty levels each. Avoid the hazards, collect the gems, and make your way to the exit on each level. You’re a cat, so that counts for something at least.

    RE:CALL ($19.99)

This is a puzzle-adventure game, but I can’t really figure out exactly how the gameplay works from the description. It talks about manipulating your memories to shape the future, but I’m not sure what that entails. It comes from the same developer as the excellent Evan’s Remains, though, so it’s probably worth paying attention to.

    Switch Sides ($1.00)

This is a handheld-only game where you have to keep rolling your ball and picking up the goobers for as long as you can without falling off the platform. You have to switch sides regularly to make sure you don’t roll too far in any one direction. It’s a buck.

‘Genshin Impact’ Hu Tao and Yelan Banner Reruns Coming February 7th – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Beginning Tomorrow, the HoYoverse revealed details for the next major Genshin Impact (Free) version 3.4 ‘The Exquisite Night Chimes’ update will roll out to iOS, Android, PC, PS5, and PS4. Pre-installation went live yesterday, and this update brings in support for characters, a new area, free-to-claim rewards, and a lot more. Today, developer HoYoverse announced that the second phase of banners for 3.4 will arrive on February 7th. This brings the Hu Tao and Yelan rerun banners and a weapon event wish on that day. I’ve been waiting for the Hu Tao rerun since the first time the banner went live a while ago. Watch the Genshin Impact version 3.4 update trailer below:

If you haven’t checked out Genshin Impact yet, you can download it for free on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The PC version is available on the official website here and the Epic Games Store. If you play on iOS, with iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 and later, you can use PS5 and Xbox Series X|S controllers to play Genshin Impact. We featured Genshin Impact as our Game of the Week when it released and awarded it our 2020 Game of the Year. I also featured it as one of the best iOS games to play with a controller. Have you been playing Genshin Impact recently and what would you like to see in the game this year?

Reviews Featuring ‘Terror of Hemasaurus’ & ‘Breakers’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 16th, 2023. It may be a holiday in the United States, but nothing stops Shaun! We’ve got a few reviews for you to check out today, covering Terror of Hemasaurus, Breakers Collection, and Galacticon. After that, we’ve got a few new releases to summarize. Very dubious lot today, I’m afraid. Finally, we have the usual lists of new and outgoing sales. Let’s get to it!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Terror of Hemasaurus ($14.99)

Rampage was a really cool game. You got to be a giant monster. You got to smash tanks and helicopters. You could eat people. You could bust up buildings piece by piece until they crumbled to the ground. There was nothing else like it back in 1986. Sequels followed, eventually, but they mostly felt like the same game with some new, often hideous, wallpaper applied. The last time the franchise ducked its head up was in 2018 for a movie tie-in. Terror of Hemasaurus is, of course, not a Rampage game. But it is a game that Rampage fans will absolutely want to pick up. In terms of gameplay mechanics, it’s a more impressive follow-up to Rampage than any of the official ones. It also has a goofy story to accompany those mechanics, which doesn’t hurt things.

Anyway, you’re a giant monster. You’ve been summoned by a weird cult in an effort to give people the kick in the pants they need in order to start actually addressing climate issues. It’s some logic, to be sure. You don’t need to worry about that, though. All you need to worry about is stomping your way through each stage, causing the requisite amount of destruction without being felled by the various defenses that are thrown at you. It’s a fancier take on Rampage, more or less. You have some cool extra moves, and the destruction physics are considerably more advanced than we saw in any Rampage games. Also, you can boot people and send them flying. And you can add in a few friends via local multiplayer so you can all boot people together.

Just like the game it homages, Terror of Hemasaurus is loads of fun that only gets better the more players you add. Unfortunately, it can also be just as repetitive over longer sessions. It’s a great bit of stress relief, and the story is interesting enough to be worth paying attention to. The sheer level of chaos when you really start going to town is certainly something to behold, and there are some aspects that make me giggle no matter how many times I see them. It’s a worthy successor that all fans of Rampage should check out.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Breakers Collection ($19.99)

QUByte has put out a number of re-releases of older games, mostly drawn from Piko Interactive’s catalog. The prices are reasonable, but it often feels like you get what you pay for with them. Emulation issues, input lag, and almost entirely bereft of extras. Breakers Collection is different from QUByte’s usual fare. The emulation quality is excellent. The usual input lag isn’t here. And there are a bunch of extras, including an interview with some of the original developers, art galleries, achievements, and more. You also get online play that uses rollback netcode, and it works really well. QUByte put in a top-shelf effort on this, and I really appreciate it.

So how about the games? While this is inarguably a collection of Breakers games, and a complete one at that, it’s worth noting that the entire series consists of Breakers and its Champion Edition-like update Breakers Revenge. There isn’t a whole lot of reason to play Breakers with Revenge on here, as it essentially includes everything that game does plus more. So you’re technically getting two games here, but you’re really getting one. It’s a solid fighting game with a lot of charm, but as to whether it’s worth twenty bucks is going to be a tough call for most.

Breakers Collection feels like it’s one for the fans, and in that capacity it is excellent. It’s just about everything you could ask for from a Breakers re-release, with great emulation quality, lots of modes and extras, and an overall level of polish we haven’t seen in QUByte’s other retro collections up until now. Others will likely want to proceed a bit more cautiously, but it’s good to see a niche, beloved slice of the NEOGEO library get its chance to shine again.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Galacticon ($4.99)

For reasons I cannot begin to fathom, it is pretty hard to play classic Midway arcade games on modern platforms. WB Games just isn’t interested in cashing in, I guess. I treasure games like Galacticon, who have the spirit of those formative and fun games coursing through them. As we saw with another recent release, Donut Dodo, Galacticon draws elements from a number of classic games but ultimate creates its own fresh experience. There’s a bit of Defender, a bit of Joust, and even some dashes of home classics like Jetpac. It even has a means for you to compare your scores with other players, a feature I think is essential for this kind of game.

Each stage has two components to it. In the first, you need to rescue various aliens from the hostile forces and load them up onto one of three ships. Be careful about who you put where, because the red and blue aliens don’t care much for each other. You can blast away enemies and scoop up power-ups and extra points in this phase too, but keep an eye on the time. Once all three ships are loaded, a vertically scrolling segment starts. In these sections you’ll have to avoid or take out obstacles while scooping up gems to add to your score. Eventually, you’ll reach your ship. Head into the tractor beam to finish the stage. Your score will be tallied and it’s on to the next one. Repeat until you run out of lives.

Playing just to survive is enjoyable enough. The first couple of stages are a little on the easy side but things heat up before long. Ultimately, you’ll probably want to start playing for score. Here you’ll find a variety of methods to juice your score, adding to the challenge as you try to juggle specific aliens to specific ships and trigger the hidden bonuses for each stage. It’s a lot to consider without being overwhelming, and the ceiling is satisfyingly high. After completing a game, a QR code will pop up. Scan it and you’ll have your score and initials registered on a global cross-platform leaderboard.

If you enjoy arcade-style score attack action games, Galacticon is a must-have. While it isn’t hard to identify where it draws inspiration from, the overall experience threads the needle of being fresh and vaguely nostalgic all at once. It’s a bit no-nonsense, with only a single mode and a small set of options, but the QR code-based high score chart ensures you’ve always got a reason to come back. Great fun.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

    New Releases

Courageous Deduction Nori 2 Betrayed Nori ($1.50)

It’s a shame that with an incredible title like this that the game is both text-heavy and in Japanese only. Unless you can read Japanese, you won’t be able to get anything out of this at all.

    UnderDungeon ($13.99)

A cute little overhead action-adventure starring a feline protagonist. That’s like its own mini-genre by now. Anyway, this one has some minigames breaking up the action here and there. The buzz on it seems to be fairly positive as far as I can see, but I haven’t had a chance to play it myself yet.

    Brawl.io ($0.99)

A handheld-only overhead action game with a variety of characters to choose from. There isn’t a whole lot to talk about here, but it’s only a dollar so if you think it looks appealing, you don’t have much to lose by taking a gamble on it.

  • Alcohol, Painkillers & Antidepressants: Lisa Marie Presley’s Demons Forced Her Into Rehab Years Before Sudden Death

Alcohol, Painkillers & Antidepressants: Lisa Marie Presley’s Demons Forced Her Into Rehab Years Before Sudden Death

    [ad_1]

Just weeks after her split from her fourth husband, Michael Lockwood, sources claimed a shattered Lisa Marie Presley checked into rehab to beat serious booze and drug demons, RadarOnline.com has learned.

Elvis’ only child was in a desperate battle to wean herself off of alcohol, painkillers, and antidepressants at a Los Angeles rehab facility in 2016, long before she was hospitalized after suffering cardiac arrest.

As RadarOnline.com reported, Lisa Marie died on Thursday — just hours after being rushed to an L.A. hospital after reportedly being found unconscious by her housekeeper. Her first ex-husband, Danny Keough, performed CPR until EMTs arrived.

Like her father, the singer has struggled with addiction, with insiders claiming, “Lisa Marie said she would die if she didn’t get help” in 2016 following her breakup.

“She has a private detox team for $400,000 a month, and all of the doctors go to her quarters,” one source said at the time.

The pal claimed the mother of four was also being treated for body dysmorphic disorder — a mental disorder where a person becomes obsessed with an imagined physical defect or a slight flaw only they notice — when she checked into rehab nearly 7 years ago.

Her worried mom, Priscilla Presley, “visited her more than once” inside the facility. Elvis’ ex-wife was also spotted outside the hospital, rushing to Lisa Marie’s side hours before her passing.

Sources claimed her alleged pill addiction started two years before splitting from Michael when she began canceling concerts due to “excruciating back pain.” To add insult to injury, one insider said, “the terrible scandal with her husband [Michael] abusing her finances” made her life hell.

Lisa Marie had a “complete emotional breakdown,” according to pals, with a member from her inner circle revealing, “she just spun out of control and fell off the wagon.”

She battled back from drug hell before. Lisa Marie admitted she was heavily into using drugs from the ages of 13 to 17.

“I did everything but mushrooms and heroin… or crack,” she said.

Elvis’ only child got clean with a Church of Scientology program after a 72-hour bender. She was a longtime member of the religious group but has since split ties with the organization.

“Cocaine, sedatives, pot, and drinking — all at the same time… I don’t know how I lived through it,” Lisa Marie said.

“I woke up one day with a bunch of people on the floor. I drove myself to the Church of Scientology and said: ‘Somebody… help me right now.’”

Lisa Marie was only 54 years old. She was a mother to 4 children. Sadly, her son Benjamin passed away in 2020 after taking his own life.

  • ‘Fighting Fantasy Classics’, ‘Toon Blast’, ‘Grindstone’, and More – TouchArcade

‘Fighting Fantasy Classics’, ‘Toon Blast’, ‘Grindstone’, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. It appears the ice has finally properly shaken from the holidays, and we’ve got plenty of updates to pick from as a result. I’ve grabbed a bag of them for you to ponder over as you come to grips with the Monday ahead of you. Or behind you, depending on the time zone you are in and when this article is posted. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

    MARVEL SNAP, Free

I already did a whole separate story about this update late last week, but I like this game a lot so I will include it here again. This update adds some new UI features, and you can now see which artist did each card’s picture. Some cards were buffed, some cards were nerfed, and some cards were moved from their previous pools to a lower-level one. You can also select your favorite variant of a card so that it’s easier to find. Not bad.

    Jetpack Joyride, Free

With lots of potential choices for events, it’s interesting to see Jetpack Joyride opt to do a cross-over with its Halfbrick stablemate, Fruit Ninja. The Cut & Run event gives you a chance to unlock a Sensei costume, Fruit Jetpack, and more. Sure, that seems like a fun idea. I can’t even remember if it’s done this one before, but I suppose it probably has. Genuinely new events are rare for this game these days.

    Toon Blast, Free

Our obligatory free-to-play matching puzzle game update this week is as obligatory as it gets, friends. I’m pressed for time again and that means we’re relying on an old faithful. Toon Blast has fifty new levels to play, and there’s some bit in the update notes about these being part of a new episode called Mission Accomplished. Those words call one picture to mind, and one picture only. I won’t specify because it is super-easy to make some people cranky and I’m too tired to deal with that anymore if I don’t have to.

    Grindstone,

The popular Apple Arcade puzzler has a fresh new update to enjoy, and it has some good stuff to dig into. The Cosmic Darkside has expanded, and that means you’ve got some business to take care of. It’s not all hustle and bustle, though. You can find some new gear among other things, and a new Hat Stand has opened up. I bet it sells hats! But if it didn’t, that would be quite the trick to play on me. I would have to respect such a move on principle.

    Super Leap Day,

Alas, 2023 is not a Leap Year. I’m glad the developers of Super Leap Day are picking themselves up and carrying on anyway. The latest version adds a new Windy Skies theme to the game, with wind funnels, fluffy clouds, parachutes, and some fresh enemies to deal with. As ever, you should remember to leap before you look. Or is that the other way around? I can never keep that sorted, and the order is awfully important there. I’ll have someone check it for me later, I guess.

    Episode XOXO,

Game of Hearts continues in this update to the Apple Arcade version of Episode, with all-new chapters to play through. Can you keep it together around the star basketball player you have a crush on, or are you about to go on a love rampage? As ever, the choices are yours. Good luck getting that smooch! Make the right decisions and it will be… a slam dunk?

    Fire Emblem Heroes, Free

I bang this drum pretty often when a Fire Emblem Heroes update shows up, and I’ll bang it again here because there aren’t many other ways to fill out the paragraph: most updates for this game these days are pretty small. So is this one. Some new skills for Legendary Hero Leif and Mythic Hero Altina were added, and Meisterbogen and Ragnell Alondite can be upgraded at the Weapon Refinery. That’s about it. But with a new Fire Emblem mainline entry launching this week on Switch, there will be some other interesting stuff soon.

    Disney Magic Kingdoms, Free

Alright, now that everyone has left, I’m free to move along to the latest Disney Magic Kingdoms update. Mr. Stork arrives in the kingdom, and he’s here to reunite Mrs. Jumbo and her son, Dumbo. You can also add the Casey Jr. Circus Train attraction to your park. Also in this update, Season 3 kicks off bringing with it some content related to the rather enjoyable Pixar movies Soul and Luca. Complete the tasks, get the rewards. Simple as that.

    Fighting Fantasy Classics, Free

It’s been a few minutes since the previous book was added to Fighting Fantasy Classics. The latest addition is one that is very near and dear to me, Appointment with F.E.A.R.. You create your own superhero and battle against the evil forces of F.E.A.R., with the stakes of Titan City itself on the line. A fun story that knows when to turn on the cheese, and one I’ll happily dive into anytime. The winner of the coveted UMMSotW award is an easy choice this week.

    MARVEL Future Fight, Free

And we’ll close things out with a look at the latest version of Marvel Future Fight, which is running an event called Moon Temple Defenders. New uniforms for Miles Morales, War Tiger, and Shadow Shell are on deck, along with the new Dispatch Mission Sector 13. Shadow Shell’s Tier-4 is now available, along with Tier-3 Miles Morales. Definitely some slick-looking new threads for all of the involved characters.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!

  • New ‘Fire Emblem Heroes’ and ‘Fire Emblem Engage’ Cross Promotion Nets You Bonuses in Each Game This Week – TouchArcade

New ‘Fire Emblem Heroes’ and ‘Fire Emblem Engage’ Cross Promotion Nets You Bonuses in Each Game This Week – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Nintendo just announced a new cross promotion for Fire Emblem Heroes (Free) and this week’s new Nintendo Switch title, Fire Emblem Engage. Linking your account to both games will net you orbs in Fire Emblem Heroes and a bonus item set for use in the Nintendo Switch game Fire Emblem Engage. To get the Fire Emblem Engage Order of Heroes item set, you need to have played Fire Emblem Heroes on iOS or Android and have linked your Nintendo Account to the app. The bonus in Fire Emblem Heroes is five orbs, which is not as good as the bonus given when Fire Emblem Three Houses released a few years ago. This collaboration will also see Fire Emblem Engage heroes arrive in Fire Emblem Heroes. Watch the trailer for that below:

If you’re wondering how to claim the Fire Emblem Heroes bonus in Fire Emblem Engage, you can follow the steps here with screenshots. It is worth noting that you should redeem your code within 150 days after getting it for the Nintendo Switch game. I haven’t played Fire Emblem Heroes in a while, but have adored my time with Fire Emblem Warriors Three Hopes last year. This collaboration got me to re-download Fire Emblem Heroes on iOS. It remains to be seen if I will spend more time with it after the item pack though. If you’ve not gotten it yet, Fire Emblem Heroes is available worldwide for free on iOS and Android. Details for Feh Pass paid subscription are here. If you’ve not played Fire Emblem Heroes for a while or play it regularly, what do you think of the new content and this collaboration?

  • TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge’ – TouchArcade

TouchArcade Game of the Week: ‘TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge’ – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

I say this quite often, but this was one of those weeks where it was almost painful to have to pick just one new game to be Game of the Week. There were a number of really cool games released this week, so be sure to check them out, but at the end of the day there was no way I wasn’t going with one of my favorite games released on other platforms last year, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge from Tribute Games and Dotemu, which has now made its way to mobile this week courtesy of Playdigious as part of the Netflix Games library.

First off, the beat ’em up genre is one of my very favorites. I admit that I’m biased having grown up through the arcade era of the ’80s and ’90s when that was a dominant genre, and in this day and age I can say that it’s not a genre that’s aged particularly well. The classics that people like myself hold in such high regard are actually quite shallow, repetitive, and unfairly cheap when it comes to difficulty. That was fine when one of the design targets of these games was to get kids pumping quarters into a machine, but it doesn’t hold up so well today.

Back then though those negative aspects didn’t matter. It was all about teaming up with a buddy or three and playing as some of your favorite characters beating the snot out of your most hated villains. I routinely replay through these old games just for a quick nostalgia hit. The Simpsons Arcade Game, X-Men, Final Fight, and of course the original TMNT arcade games. And plenty more. I typically get 30 minutes to an hour of fun before the shallowness starts to wear thin, especially if I’m not playing co-op with someone else. It’s good for what it is, but like I said, it hasn’t aged all that well.

That’s not to say that there haven’t been deeper or more complex beat ’em ups released in the decades since, but I think it was really 2020’s Streets of Rage 4 that really brought the genre into a more contemporary setting. It showed us that combat could be more nuanced and strategic rather than button mashy. Unique game modes and progression systems showed that a beat ’em up didn’t need to be just some 20-minute linear campaign and instead it could actually offer a ton of meaningful replay value. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that I’m also a major fan of Streets of Rage 4 (which is also phenomenal on mobile), and it’s from this same cloth that TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is cut.

Ok, this has been a whole lot of words and I haven’t even talked about the game in question yet, but being that it was one of the marquee releases of last year on other platforms there should be no shortage of reviews or info should you need to seek it, including our own glowing review and our interview with the developers on bringing it to mobile. This is still the full fantastic game that is on other platforms already, but with excellent touch controls implemented as well as full physical controller support. There’s also some truly impressive online matchmaking that seems to always be populated with other people to play with, which feels exceedingly rare for a mobile game.

If I have to come up with a drawback for TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, it’s that it requires having a Netflix subscription in order to play on mobile. That will no doubt turn off some people who either don’t have Netflix or would just rather pay upfront for the game the old-fashioned way, but that’s the world we’re living in nowadays. Thankfully the Netflix Games library is truly incredible and arguably a reason itself to subscribe to Netflix if you don’t already given how many great games you can play in return, but if it’s still a dealbreaker for you I can only urge you to seek out another platform to play TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge because games that exude this level of sheer joy and playfulness don’t come around all that often.

  • ‘Go Rally’, ‘NEScape!’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

‘Go Rally’, ‘NEScape!’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 13th, 2023. It’s the end of the week, and we’ve got several new releases to look at before it heads off into the record books. Honestly, it feels more like a mop-up today. Not a whole lot of exciting stuff in the line-up. We summarize it all anyway, because that is what we do around here. After that, it’s the list of new sales and all of the discounts set to expire over the weekend. Let’s get to business!

    New Releases

    Go Rally ($20.00)

Oh hey, I recognize this one. These overhead racers are always neat, and I think it’s a good way to approach rally racing in particular. This one has a full career mode with one hundred tracks set in various locations around the world. You also have a wide selection of vehicles to choose from and can customize their paint to give them a slightly personal touch. The only rub is that you can get this on your mobile device for three bucks, and I’m not really seeing what makes up the other seventeen dollars here because it sure seems to be the same game. Try it on your iPhone or iPad first and I guess if you love it enough to have it on your Switch as well, then let fly.

    DUSK ’82 ($4.99)

This was previously available as some kind of pre-order bonus for DUSK or something, I think. Anyway, here it is separately. It’s an 8-bit style action-puzzler that uses a lot of familiar elements from DUSK but presented in a very different fashion. It’s pretty decent if you’re into this genre, and the five dollar price is just right.

    Salamander County Public Television ($7.99)

You’ve been hired to work at a public television station, but somehow everyone except you and a couple of other people has disappeared. It falls to you to keep the station running, and that involves playing twenty-five weird minigames. The game description is very proud to point out that almost everything is a stock photo, which I think absolutely works for that public television feel. If you’re looking for something odd today, this might be your ticket.

    Dragon Fury ($24.99)

For a second I thought this might be a reissue of the Genesis/Mega Drive pinball game of a similar name, and I got a bit excited. I would pay twenty-five bucks for that. I don’t know if I would do the same for what this actually is. It’s a one-on-one fighting game with what initially seems to be a massive roster of characters to choose from. Unfortunately, it’s mostly cosmetic. There are only a small number of moves shared amongst the generic aliens, vampires, pirates, and so on. At least it has support for two players via local multiplayer. I honestly wasn’t sure that feature would be there when I first looked at this.

    Memorrha ($19.99)

Explore the remnants of a mysterious culture, solving puzzles and piecing together clues in this first-person adventure. Reviews on other platforms are not particularly good, with many citing the repetitive nature of the main puzzle type and the generally obtuse nature of the game. I haven’t played it myself yet, but with that price tag you may want to go read the words of someone who has if you’re thinking of buying it.

    NEScape! ($9.99)

Escape room games probably need some kind of gimmick to stand out these days, and this one definitely has an eye-catching one. It’s an actual indie NES game running on the Switch and it looks and sounds the part, but it plays more or less like a modern escape room adventure. Collect items, solve puzzles, and enjoy the atmosphere. I’ve mostly had my fill of this type of game at the moment, but I will admit that the presentation speaks to me here.

Pixel Game Maker Series BombMachine Gunzohg ($5.99)

A fairly straightforward side-scrolling action game for one or two players via local multiplayer. There’s an emphasis on getting through stages quickly, and there are some secret goodies to find for those who go digging around. Your mechanized character’s moves are powered by its energy, so you have to make sure you don’t use it carelessly or you could wind up in a pinch. Seems pleasant enough for the price.

Puzzle by Nikoli S Heyawake ($4.99)

Another interesting puzzle game in the Nikoli S series from Hamster. This type of puzzle is called Heyawake, which roughly translates to “room division”. You have to color in spaces in each room according to the number, following some specific rules. It’s a little tricky to get the hang of at first, but it works really well once you do. It’s also rather novel. I don’t think we have any other puzzlers of this type on the eShop, and that’s not something I get to say often these days.

    Snake Game ($3.99)

Well, it’s Snake. Four different variants, but all of them Snake. Eat the bits that appear, don’t run into your tail. You know it, I know it, but I need to get this paragraph just a little longer so it doesn’t mess up my formatting. There we go.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

As Friday sales lists go, this one is fairly bland. Still, there are some good discounts in there depending on your tastes. WRC 9 runs like a dog but for four bucks some folks will get a lot out of it. Tinykin‘s cheaper than it has ever been, and it’s a must-have for 3D platformer fans. Not too much in the weekend outbox to fuss about, but if you’re looking to pick up The House of Da Vinci 2 now is probably the moment.

  • Moonrider’, ‘Terror of Hemasaurus’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

Moonrider’, ‘Terror of Hemasaurus’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 12th, 2023. It’s more of a normal Thursday this week, with a good dozen or so new releases to look at. A few of them are very, very good. We’ve got summaries of all of them, plus the latest sales and expiring discounts for the day. There’s a lot to look at, so let’s get to it!

    New Releases

    Vengeful Guardian: Moonrider ($16.99)

This one comes from the makers of Oniken, Odallus, and Blazing Chrome. If you’ve played any of those games, this probably has your attention already. It’s another side-scrolling action game, and it has vibes of things like Ninja Gaiden, Shinobi, Strider, and more. Battle through eight awesome levels as a well-equipped cyber ninja, slicing and dicing whatever gets in your way. I’ll have a review of it soon, but I can already tell you that it’s very good.

    Terror of Hemasaurus ($14.99)

If you like Rampage, you need to have your eyes on this game. It takes all the fun parts of that game and expands on them with bigger stages, more gameplay mechanics, and a ton more carnage. Up to four people can enjoy this one via local multiplayer, too. Punting an incoming car into a building to knock it down just might be a thing that never gets old. I should have a review of this one early next week, but it’s another game I feel very comfortable calling a full-on winner.

    Breakers Collection ($19.99)

Visco Corporation’s cult favorite fighting game returns thanks to QUByte, and as the price tag may indicate the publisher has put a bit more into this package compared to their usual retro re-releases. You get both Breakers and its enhanced follow-up Breakers Revenge, well-emulated with rollback netcode for online multiplayer. The extra features aren’t going to have Digital Eclipse sweating or anything, but there is a little bit to look at here including an interesting interview. Yes, I will be reviewing this one too. Business is picking up already.

    Arcade Archives Senjyo ($7.99)

Last week’s Arcade Archives release was the big-name Galaga, so it’s perhaps only fitting that this week is a bit of a deeper cut. Senjyo is a gallery shooter of sorts that was released in 1983 by Tehkan, now known as Koei Tecmo. I don’t have a whole lot of knowledge of this one, but it’s always nice to see the lesser-known bits of arcade gaming history show up.

    Back To Brother ($4.49)

This is a platforming adventure that sees you traversing treacherous lands in order to get back to your brother. Just like the title says! He isn’t just down the street or anything either. You’ll have to travel through a wide variety of areas, each with their own theme and style. If nothing else, it’s affordable.

    Drago Noka ($19.99)

Here’s a village builder where the gimmick is that you’re building the town on the back of a dragon. For the most part, you’re doing the usual things. Invite new villagers, socialize with them, make use of their skills, and maybe even find romance. Farm, blacksmith, fish, and so on as you watch your little town grow. But do keep in mind that the dragon you’re on isn’t the only one in the world, and there may come a time where you clash with others. An interesting twist, I suppose.

Fight of Steel: Infinity Warrior ($14.99)

This is not this game’s fault, but whenever I see a fighting game about robots, I start having Rise of the Robots flashbacks. At the very least, I’m sure this game is better than Rise of the Robots. Build your own fighter in terms of appearance and moves and battle against the CPU or other plays in local or online multiplayer. The online play uses rollback netcode, which is nice to see with a lower-profile release like this. Those big-pants fighters that aren’t using it really are getting short on good reasons, I think.

    Lone Ruin ($14.99)

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: a roguelite twin-stick shooter. We used to get these pretty much every week, but it has slowed down enough that fans of the genre will likely be happy to see this one. It’s straightforward and doesn’t really try anything new, but it plays well enough. One of those games that is hard to know what to do with, because it’s neither good enough to recommend with much vigor nor bad enough to tell people not to buy. It’s here, it’s fine.

    Chasing Static ($14.99)

Here’s a brief first-person horror adventure that sees you exploring a countryside town in Wales. After a grisly murder with supernatural circumstances, the main character Chris must try to survive and figure out what is going on. As the title implies, there’s an audio component to the gameplay wherein you have to rely on a special device to track down anomalies. Reviews on other platforms were somewhat middling, but perhaps the game can find a warmer reception on Switch.

    Suhoshin ($18.99)

This visual novel is set in Korea during the Joseon period. You play as Yuri, a young guardsman who has returned home after a long time away. People have started to die through mysterious circumstances, and Yuri is tasked with investigating the situation. Make your choices in this branching story and see which ending you arrive at. We don’t see this kind of setting often in visual novels, so that’s already one thing going for this one. The art looks nice, too.

Burrow of the Fallen Bear: A Gay Furry Visual Novel ($19.99)

I mean, the title does a lot of the job for me here. This is another visual novel, this time with a gay furry theme. The protagonist is a feline rogue named Krile, and his journey will take him up against one of the most dangerous foes he could possibly face. Make your choices and explore multiple romance options, ultimately winding up with one of eighteen endings.

Japanese Escape Games The Abandoned Schoolhouse ($9.99)

Well, this is the twelfth one of these so far, so you should know what they are about by now. You wake up in an abandoned schoolhouse and have to do escape game-like things to get out. Solve the puzzles and enjoy the eerie feeling of a place that normally looks lively being run down and quiet.

    Touhou Fan-Made Virtual Autography ($14.99)

There are a ton of Touhou games on the Switch, but we’re surprisingly thin on pure shoot-em-ups under the label. Well, here’s one. I wish I could say it was a great one, but it’s actually kind of broken mechanically. It also lacks a proper scoring system, which is a major blow to a shooter. Probably best left to big Touhou fans, I think.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

A decent list of games to get started with ahead of what is likely going to be a bigger list tomorrow. Gnosia and Record of Lodoss War will be the drums I bang, but have a look through that list yourself and seer what catches your eye. The outbox is also substantial and worth looking at, so maybe settle into your chair and give it all a nice slow once-over.

Each and every day new mobile games are hitting the App Store, and so each week we put together a big old list of all the best new releases of the past seven days. Back in the day the App Store would showcase the same games for a week, and then refresh those features each Thursday. Because of that developers got into the habit of releasing their games throughout Wednesday or very early Thursday in order to hopefully get one of those coveted features spots. Nowadays the App Store refreshes constantly, so the need for everyone to release all on the same day has diminished. Still, we’ve kept our weekly Wednesday night format as for years that’s the time people knew to check TouchArcade for the list of new games. And so without further ado please check out the full list of this week’s new games below, and let us know in the comments section which games you’ll be picking up!

‘Bayonetta 3’ Update, ‘Children of Silentown’, Plus More News and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for January 11th, 2023. It’s a slow day for new releases, with just a single one on the board to look at. We’ve got the usual lists of new and expiring sales to look at, of course. But before we go into those things, we’ve got a couple of news items to check out. It’s another chill one today, but tomorrow will pick up the business. Let’s see what we’ve got!

    News

Check Out the Lateset Trailer for ‘Tales of Symhonia Remastered’, Coming Feb 17th

For various reasons, Nintendo fans have always seemed to have a greater affinity for Tales of Symphonia than most other Tales games. Perhaps that’s why Bandai Namco has decided to bring Tales of Symphonia Remastered to the Switch. It’s arriving quite soon, February 17th to be exact, and in light of that there is a brand new trailer for you to enjoy. It’s up there. Above this paragraph. Can’t miss it, really.

‘Bayonetta 3’ Update Includes Balance Adjustments and More

The latest game in the Bayonetta series got an update today bringing the game to version 1.2.0. It seems like it’s mainly focused on tweaking the balance of the game in various ways. Some of Viola’s moves have been buffed, a couple of accessories have been tweaked, several of the Niflheim Stages have been made a bit easier, and unsealing the Old Picture Book is significantly simpler. The latter is significant because it is the means for playing the teaser for the upcoming Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon. The update is live now, so just go ahead and hit the update option if it hasn’t already done it on its own.

    New Releases

    Children of Silentown ($19.99)

This is a new point-and-click style adventure game from the developer behind Little Briar Rose, a game that certainly had no shortage of praise thrown in its direction. It follows a girl named Lucy who fears the forest around her village. Villagers disappear now and then, and Lucy finally decides she will be the one to investigate the problem. Sooner or later, she’s going to have to confront her fears. It looks pretty good, but I haven’t had a chance to play it yet.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Continuing the recent trend, there isn’t a lot to look at in today’s list of new sales. The good news is that it is short enough that you don’t really need me to walk you through it. The outbox is larger, but most of what’s in it will be back around before long. So do check it, but don’t feel overly pressured to buy anything right now.

Shredder’s Revenge’ Mobile Review – An Excellent Port of an Outstanding Beat Em Up – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge (Free) from Tribute Games and Dotemu is a very special game. Not only is it a fantastic beat ’em up, but it delivered on bringing the experience I had as a kid playing the Konami classics to current platforms with a modern experience. Unlike most of Playdigious’ prior conversions for mobile, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is available through Netflix for subscribers, and it is one of the best Netflix Games additions just like Into the Breach.

If you aren’t familiar with TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge, it is to the Konami classic TMNT beat ’em ups what Streets of Rage 4 is to that series. While I adore both TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge and Streets of Rage 4, the former is more special because I have a ton of nostalgia for these games from when I played some of them years ago. The current mobile version is one update behind the console and PC version, which means the custom mode and new filters aren’t available yet. Hopefully they are added soon.

Before getting into the mobile port features, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is special because of how unique the cast of playable characters is, how detailed and well-designed the levels are, and also for the superlative soundtrack from Tee Lopes. All of this comes together with gorgeous visuals that perfectly deliver on a modern take for a classic TMNT experience. In addition to the fleshed-out story mode with multiple bosses, this mobile version has access to the arcade mode which has you playing with limited lives and no saves.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge on iOS has full touch and controller support. The touch controls are very good as well. On the controller side, I tested both the Razer Kishi V2 and the Backbone One PlayStation Edition. Both displayed Xbox prompts but worked without issues. If you aren’t a fan of touch controls, you can use a controller without issues.

Visually, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge looks perfect on the iPhone 11 and iPad Pro (2020) I used to try out the preview build and publicly available release on. It has artwork banners/bars around the gameplay and menus since it was originally designed for 16:9 displays only. It also runs very well. I didn’t have any major performance issues, but I haven’t been able to stress test the online in every level yet. The party menu confirms support for 6 online players right now which is good to see.

I had access to the game through a preview build pre-release, and I’ve tested the online in the publicly available version to confirm that it works great. While I wasn’t able to test the multiplayer much pre-release, the online play has worked brilliantly so far. I even tested it with two devices on cellular rather than wifi where it worked without any issues. The online play lets you create a party and share a code, find players online, or join using a party code.

As with my other reviews of mobile ports, I wanted to compare TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge on all portable platforms. Having now played it on iPad, iPhone, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Steam Deck, I like the iPhone and Switch (non Lite) versions the most. The Steam Deck doesn’t really offer any benefit for TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge like it does with Dead Cells, and the Nintendo Switch OLED model screen alongside modern iOS displays are a lot nicer especially with how colorful TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is. The game controls very well across the board and you will likely have no trouble with it on your platform of choice. There will be some slowdown in certain parts on Switch and older mobile devices though while Steam Deck runs it without any issues.

Despite being one update behind the PC and console versions right now, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is absolutely essential. Playdigious did a fantastic job with this outstanding beat ’em up, and you owe it to yourself to play it if you have a Netflix subscription.
