‘Chained Echoes’, ‘Samurai Maiden’, ‘JellyCar Worlds’, and Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 8th, 2022. Today is Thursday, and that usually means an absolute deluge of new releases on the eShop. But the year is winding down, so we’ve only got ten or so to look at this time. The amazing indie RPG Chained Echoes, cheeky slash-em-up Samurai Maiden, and the positively nostalgic JellyCar Worlds are the most notable of the bunch, but there are some other interesting ones here. We’ve also got the usual lists of new and outgoing sales to check out. Let’s get to it!

    New Releases

    Chained Echoes ($24.99)

I’m always a bit nervous about how these ambitious, multi-year passion projects from solo developers are going to turn out. Well, I’m only a few hours into Chained Echoes at this point and I can safely say that so far this is even better than my best expectations. A very high-quality JRPG-style game, and I’ve got nice things to say about every aspect of it thus far. Look for my review as soon as I am able to finish it up.

    Samurai Maiden ($59.99)

A silly hack-and-slash action game starring a heroine from the modern age who is sent back to the Sengoku era and lends her sword skills to the effort of taking down the Demon Lord. She is joined by a few allies, giving her some handy ninja back-up in her battles. If things get too tough, she can smooch one of the ninjas for a bit of extra power. I’ll be doing a review of this one, for some reason.

    Arcade Archives Pac-Mania ($7.99)

The latest addition to Arcade Archives is a relatively famous one, but not one I find overly exciting. Pac-Mania was one of Namco’s numerous attempts to make a follow-up to Pac-Man, this time tilting the view and giving Pac-Man a jump to make the game feel more three-dimensional. You can jump over the ghosts now, but be careful as some of them can also jump. I’ve never been a big fan of this one, but if you are then you will be happy to know that Hamster has done its usual find job with it.

The Tale of Clouds & Wind (QUByte Classics) ($5.99)

Here’s the next game from Piko Interactive’s IP catalog to release in the QUByte Classics line. This one sometimes goes under the name Water Margin, as it is based on the popular Chinese classic. It’s a Genesis/Mega Drive beat-em-up that feels a little like an off-brand Knights of the Round or Golden Axe. Honestly, it’s pretty decent. I should be reviewing this one, and I’ll let you know how QUByte’s efforts have turned out this time when I do.

    Kardboard Kings ($19.99)

This is a simulation game where you inherit a card shop and have to run it successfully. Buy, sell, and trade cards while trying to keep the customers happy. It’s fairly lightweight as sims go, but the card collection mechanic gives it a little extra spice. It gets repetitive fairly quickly, but if you jam to things like Kairosoft’s sims then you’ll probably find enough in here to like to make it worth the trip.

    Mech Armada ($19.99)

A turn-based strategy game starring mechs. Yes, I know we just had one of these last week. This one has more of a roguelite vibe to it. Custom build your team of mechs, upgrade them as you go, and battle enemies as you make your way through a series of procedurally-generated challenges. Reviews seem all over the map on other platforms, but it does seem to have its fans.

    JellyCar Worlds ($7.99)

Wow, JellyCar. That takes me back. Anyway, the original creator is back with a new JellyCar game, giving us more worlds to drive and platform our squishy cars through. Your car has a number of neat abilities it can use, and you can even customize your own vehicle. I’m sure this will be just as amusing as the old ones, which means we’re in for a nice little time-waster. It’s also coming to Apple Arcade tomorrow, in case you’d rather play it that way.

    Simona’s Requiem ($7.99)

This is an affordable little ode to Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, one of the most unfairly maligned classic games I can think of. It’s a good game! And so is Simona’s Requiem. You play as a reaper and travel the world in search of the Fisher King. It’s only a few hours long and the slow walking pace of the main character can make it feel sluggish at times, but there’s a lot of fun to be had here with some of the clever stage set-ups and boss battles.

    Coloring Pixels: Collection 2 ($7.95)

Color by number in one hundred and eighty levels spread across eight different themes. Just pick the color that matches the number and, you know, go to town. Not much more I can say about this.

    Football Kicks ($3.99)

I feel like we saw a game almost exactly like this a week or two ago, so there’s a fair chance this is based on a template. Anyway, it’s a penalty kick game. Kick some penalty kicks. Not something I’d buy, but maybe you feel differently.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

This quiet period between the end of Black Friday and upcoming likely sales for things for The Game Awards or the Christmas/New Year holidays sure is something. Not too much to fuss about in today’s inbox, though shooter fans may want to scope that new low price on Rigid Force Redux. Over in the outbox, I’ll use my nose to push the Xeno Crisis meatball towards you as I often do. EAT THE MEATBALL.

    Starbase Startopia ($24.99 from $49.99 until 12/9)
    Xeno Crisis ($9.99 from $19.99 until 12/9)

That’s all for today, friends. We’ll be back tomorrow with the remaining releases of the week, including Dragon Quest Treasures among others. There should also be more sales than we saw today, but who can say for sure? If any massive news comes, I’ll likely include that too. I hope you all have a thrilling Thursday, and as always, thanks for reading!

‘Easy Come Easy Golf’ New Update Adds Stroke Standoff Play Multiplayer Mode, Level Cap Increase, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Easy Come Easy Golf () from Clap Hanz is one of my favorite games on Apple Arcade. It has been updated quite a bit since launch bringing in new modes and improvements. It recently launched on Nintendo Switch as well. Read my Apple Arcade review of it here and Shaun’s Switch review here. Today, Easy Come Easy Golf has been updated on both Switch and Apple Arcade to version 1.9.0. The highlights are Stroke Standoff play and the new level cap. Watch a trailer for Easy Come Easy Golf update 1.9.0 below:

Instead of waiting for other players, you can now play each hole directly as of version 1.9.0 on Switch and Apple Arcade. This aims to make multiplayer faster and more casual. The other addition is the level cap increasing to 40. This level cap requires Albatross golf shots with a specific character. Easy Come Easy Golf is out now on Nintendo Switch for $19.99 here and on Apple Arcade here. Check out our forum thread for Easy Come Easy Golf (previously Clap Hanz Golf) here and the official website for the game here. Reviews Featuring ‘Football Manager 2023 Touch’ and More, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 7th, 2022. Today can be accurately described as Mikhail Madness, with a whopping four reviews from our pal-est of pals. Football Manager 2023 Touch, Wobbledogs, Soccer Story, and Lover Pretend all get their scores in this barrage. After that, I’ve got summaries of today’s new releases including Hello Neighbor 2 and The Rumble Fish 2, along with the lists of new and expiring sales. Let’s go!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Football Manager 2023 Touch ($44.99)

Despite not caring about the FIFA and eFootball games, I’ve always enjoyed checking out Sports Interactive’s Football Manager series almost every year. While I skipped the last two main PC releases, having access to a more-streamlined release on Xbox with Xbox Game Pass has been a great middle ground. With Football Manager 2023, SEGA brings Football Manager 2023 Touch to not just Switch, but also Apple Arcade. iPhone and Android get access to Football Manager 2023 Mobile on the other side, and we also have Football Manager 2023 Console coming to PS5 soon following its release on Xbox platforms.

With all the editions out of the way, I’ve been having a lot of fun with Football Manager 2023 Touch on Apple Arcade and Nintendo Switch. Since this version of the game is on multiple Apple devices and Nintendo Switch, I was curious to see how it scales and runs across newer and older devices, and whether it was actually playable on a smaller screen with touch controls compared to how good the games have been on iPads.

football manager 23 touch review switch vs apple arcade ipad

If you’re completely new to the world of Football Manager, the Touch games are like a middle ground between the full PC game and the more streamlined Mobile editions. In recent years, SEGA has also brought it to console platforms. I haven’t played Football Manager Touch since the first Nintendo Switch release and it has been interesting to see how much more the Touch version of the game has this year compared to a few years ago.

Both the Nintendo Switch and Apple Arcade versions of Football Manager 2023 Touch support controllers and touch controls. On my iPhone, I opted to play with my Razer Kishi V2 since the touch targets are a bit small while the iPad version feels great to play with touch on my iPad Pro. On Nintendo Switch, I stuck to touch controls in handheld mode and a controller when docked. Both control options work well, but I’m very surprised at how good it feels with a controller.

    fm 23 touch switch review

The 3D match engine holds up relatively well visually on Switch, but it isn’t smooth. On iPad Pro, it runs and looks a lot better. Barring that, the menus are also more responsive with quicker loading on iPad Pro than Switch. The Switch version is currently behind when it comes to updates as well. These issues add up to make it harder to recommend at its asking price.

I did run into one issue with the Apple Arcade version of Football Manager 2023 Touch with how my saves were not syncing across devices initially. I hope this is more reliable with future updates. Barring that, Football Manager 2023 Touch is a nice step up over the game I played a few years ago, and it controls very well on Nintendo Switch and Apple Arcade. I just hope some of the issues on Switch can be addressed alongside updates arriving on time.

    fm 23 touch switch review

If you have access to an iPad, I’d definitely recommend subscribing to Apple Arcade for Football Manager 2023 Touch. It is excellent there and one of the best recent releases on the service. Having now tested Football Manager 2023 Touch across all available platforms, the Switch version is one I’d recommend if you want to play it on the go, but don’t have an iPad. I’m not a fan of the controls on the iPhone despite being glad that SEGA brought over this version to the smaller screen for the first time here. -Mikhail Madnani

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Wobbledogs Console Edition ($19.99)

    wobbledogs console edition review switch

Wobbledogs is a 3D pet simulator that blends in idle gaming, customization, breeding, and just hilarious interactions between dogs. It has been available on PC for a while now, but was shown for Switch in the recent Indie World Showcase. Having released about two weeks ago on the eShop, Wobbledogs Console Edition for Switch is the first release of the game outside the PC platform.

Wobbledogs Console Edition is a very weird (in a good way) game. You spend time interacting, feeding, instructing, and breeding dogs that lay eggs, mutate across cocoons, and more. It has a very colorful and memorable aesthetic as well with some catchy music. I can see it getting old quickly for some players, but I enjoyed the various customization options and goals to work towards.

    wobbledogs console edition review

Initially, I wasn’t pleased with the controls. I would definitely recommend tweaking the X/Y axis and the sensitivity to your liking. A game like this would dramatically improve with touch controls for precision selection or camera movement because the current implementation isn’t amazing. When it comes to the performance, it isn’t perfect on Switch, but never becomes unplayable. I imagine it is a lot smoother on PC though.

Once the camera and movement controls are improved, Wobbledogs Console Edition will be an easier recommendation. Right now, it does a lot right, but falters in some key areas. I’ve enjoyed booting it up as a break from other story-driven games, and hope to see it supported for the near future. Animal Uprising and Auroch Digital have done a good job with this conversion, but some touchscreen support would alleviate a lot of my issues with the camera and controls. -Mikhail Madnani

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Soccer Story ($44.99)

Soccer Story from developer PanicBarn and publisher No More Robots is a very interesting take on a sports RPG. I adored Golf Story (unrelated to this game) a few years ago, and have always wanted more games like that. Soccer Story is a different take on the formula, and one that manages to work well in many ways. I’ve been playing it for review on Switch and Steam Deck over the last two weeks. With a few fixes, it will be an excellent game.

Soccer Story succeeds with its narrative, interactions, and exploration. It falters with how the actual soccer feels lackluster in its mechanics during matches and thanks to some performance issues on Nintendo Switch. Considering this is a story-driven experience, I don’t want to spoil anything about the narrative, but the team is onto something special with this style for sure. I hope to see more games like this going forward. A Fishing Story would be right up my alley.

    soccer story switch review

Soccer Story on Nintendo Switch has a quality and performance graphics mode. The former caps the frame rate lower but adds more post-processing and better image quality in its voxel style aesthetic. The latter runs smoother but has annoying frame pacing issues in many areas. I noticed these on my OLED Model Switch docked and handheld. Load times are mostly good and the implementation of rumble is nice.

Once the performance issues are addressed and some tweaks are made to the actual soccer during matches, Soccer Story will be an easy recommendation on Nintendo Switch. If you’d rather not wait, you are better off playing it on Steam Deck right now. Having tested it on Switch, Steam Deck, and Xbox Series X over the last few weeks, the Switch version definitely needs more optimization. Right now, I enjoy the open world and exploration aspects of the game a lot more than the actual soccer. There is a lot of potential here, but Soccer Story is a few updates away from being a great experience. -Mikhail Madnani

    SwitchArcade Score: 3/5

    Lover Pretend ($49.99)

    lover pretend review switch otome

I’ve been slowly making my way through both Lover Pretend and Paradigm Paradox from Aksys Games over the last month, and have been surprised by both games in a good way. While I’ll save my thoughts on the latter for my full review, Lover Pretend has been a breath of fresh air when it comes to its narrative as an otome game.

You play as a college student who is hired as an assistant on a film, but is cast as the main love interest for the movie. What got me hooked to this story is the more slice-of-life style narrative versus all the serious ones we usually see in otome games. You initially have four character routes, but unlock a fifth one once you’ve seen all four good outcomes here.

    lover pretend review switch otome

Lover Pretend’s gimmick is the Pretend Time mechanic that has you answering timed questions while aiming to convince someone with your acting. Answering correctly sees jigsaw puzzle pieces on the screen go away leading to a good outcome, while the other end sees more jigsaw puzzle pieces added leading you to potentially a bad end. During this timed sequence, you can’t save, load, or rewind. I always like seeing how Otomate tries to keep things fresh, and this is a good mechanic when it comes to the narrative, but feels a bit poorly implemented.

As with other otome games from Otomate that Aksys Games has localized, the interface remains a highlight. It looks gorgeous barring some text issues when it comes to the layout, and I continue to enjoy being able to play through the complete game with touch controls in handheld mode.

    lover pretend review switch otome

If you’re after a more-relaxed and romantic slice-of-life story with some comedy sprinkled in, Lover Pretend is an otome game for you. This is definitely one of Aksys Games’ more interesting otome releases, and I hope there’s more to come from the cast and story in a potential fandisc or sequel. We need more slice-of-life and comedy in otome games. -Mikhail Madnani

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    New Releases

    Hello Neighbor 2 ($39.99)

I mean, just move. The guy clearly isn’t right, and you’re probably going to get killed. I know it’s hard to find a good place that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg these days, but living around this guy might cost you a literal arm and leg. Anyway, you’re investigating your fishy neighbor trying to find out what he’s hiding. But you have to do it on the sly or you’ll be in big trouble. He learns from your behavior so there’s a constant cat-and-mouse element to the whole affair. Not my kind of thing but looking at how the first one sold it’s clearly something a lot of people enjoy.

    Bot Gaiden ($14.99)

This is a side-scrolling action-platformer that feels somewhere between Contra and Mega Man X‘s Zero modes with a few added twists. The bosses get stronger the longer you take to reach them, so you’re incentivized to haul robo-butt through the stages as quickly as you can. You can actually play cooperatively with another person locally in this one, which is a neat feature. Certainly seems more interesting than eastasiasoft’s usual fare.

Witch on the Holy Night ($39.99)

If you’re a fan of visual novels, you almost certainly know developer TYPE-MOON. The company behind Fate/Grand Order has a port of its 2012 PC release Witch on the Holy Night for Switch owners, complete with updates and additions like voice acting and remastered visuals. It’s pretty much a kinetic novel, so don’t expect to have much input on the story. But it’s a cool tale set in 1980s Japan, and this is its first time being localized for the West. So yes, if you like visual novels with memorable characters and a good dab of the supernatural, you’ll probably want to investigate this one further.

    The Rumble Fish 2 ($29.99)

Dimps has made a lot of fighting games, many of which were tied up with the property of other companies. Dragon Ball Z Budokai, Street Fighter IV, and Saint Seiya are just some of the games it has worked on. But way back in 2003, the company also did a fighting game that was an original property: The Rumble Fish. In 2005, that game got a sequel, and that’s what we’re seeing a port of here. This is actually its first official home console release, so that’s cool. It includes modern features like roll-back online play, wide-screen support, multiple extra modes, and… paid DLC characters. Look, you didn’t have to modernize it that much! The DLC characters were unlocked with secret codes in the arcade version, but here you’ll have to pay $3.99 a pop. Welcome to 2022, The Rumble Fish 2.

    Togges ($19.99)

This is an unusual take on the usual 3D platforming game. Your character leaves a trail of blocks behind it, and you need to stack and connect those blocks to solve various puzzles and reach the places you need to go. There are seven large-scale levels to play through with plenty of goodies to collect in each of them. I’ll have a review of this creative title soon, so do look forward to that.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Some new sales on LEGO games and other odds and ends. There are new low prices on LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga and LEGO DC Super-Villains Deluxe, along with a few interesting indie games like Gamedec and Arise. KEMCO’s latest sale on several of its RPGs is wrapping up, and if you’re going to grab any of them then you’ll want to get them at discounted prices. Have a look through both lists, as usual.

Fighting Game ‘Art of Fighting 2’ ACA NeoGeo From SNK and Hamster Is Out Now on iOS and Android – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Last week, side-scrolling shooter Pulstar hit mobile platforms as the newest ACA NeoGeo series release from Hamster and SNK. Read Shaun’s review of it here. Today, fighting game Art of Fighting 2 has launched on iOS and Android. Art of Fighting 2 debuted in 1994 featuring 12 fighters competing in the King of Fighters ultimate fighting championship. It featured the Rage Gauge mechanic alongside weak and strong attacks with the recovery system. This is definitely one of my least favorite releases from SNK’s older fighters, but I’m still glad to see it be released on mobile for more people to try it. Check out a screenshot from the Android version of Art of Fighting 2 showcasing the on-screen buttons and gameplay below:

You can buy Art of Fighting 2 ACA NeoGeo on the App Store for iOS here and Google Play for Android here. As with prior releases on mobile, this costs half of what it does on consoles at $3.99. If you’ve not heard of the series or seen it in action on mobile yet, Shaun has reviewed most of the releases so far in the ACA NeoGeo series on iOS. Check out his reviews for Top Hunter Roddy & Cathy here, Samurai Shodown IV here, Alpha Mission II here, Metal Slug 5 here, Shock Troopers here, NAM-1975 here, ZED BLADE here, PUZZLED here, The King of Fighters 2002 here, Big Tournament Golf here, King of the Monsters here, Last Resort here, Aero Fighters 2 here, Burning Fight here, Robo Army here, Mutation Nation here, Twinkle Star Sprites here, and Aero Fighters 3 here. Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 6th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got three more reviews. Siralim Ultimate, Astronite, and Swordship get evaluated and scored today. All interesting in their own ways, though the quality of execution varies. After that, we’ve got a couple of new releases to check out. Finally, it’s the usual lists of new and outgoing sales. Let’s get to work!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Siralim Ultimate ($19.99)

It’s been over eight years since I reviewed the original Siralim for iOS. It was really shabby-looking then, but the gameplay shined through for those who had the patience to dig into it. Over the years and a few sequels, the series has gotten a good bit prettier. Still not going to rival Final Fantasy anytime soon, but it has its own style and it works. Perhaps more importantly, the gameplay has gone even wider and deeper in what it offers. And wouldn’t you know it? Siralim Ultimate follows that pattern to a tee. So much so, I’m not really sure what I can say in this review that I didn’t say when I reviewed Siralim 3, Siralim 2, or Siralim. It’s all of that, but there’s more of it.

The only aspects where the Siralim games didn’t excel in the past were in terms of presentation and story. Siralim Ultimate hits a point I would deem as fine with its visuals, and there’s a bit more of an attempt to build a proper narrative here. The dialogue isn’t going to win any awards, but there is something you could call a plot and an ending this time. But of course, the game basically goes on forever after you reach that ending. You can spend hundreds of hours with this game, just like the previous ones. You might even hit four digits. You’ve even got cross-platform saving via the cloud, which is very much appreciated. Oh, and if you’re coming to the series for the first time, it’s okay to start here. You’ll be fine.

If you enjoy monster catching or even just mechanically rich RPGs, it’s hard to find a game that delivers as much content at such a scale of quality as Siralim Ultimate. It’s a testament to this series that every time a new installment comes out, I end up sinking at least a couple hundred hours into it despite having done that with every previous one. Those looking for snappy dialogue or a novel story probably won’t get what they are after with Siralim Ultimate, but otherwise this is a must-have for RPG lovers.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5

    Astronite ($14.99)

I know I’ve said this a lot recently, but it bears mentioning again. We’ve hit such a level of saturation with Metroidvania games on Switch that you could limit yourself to the best of the best and still have more games to play than you probably need. That makes it really hard for a new game in the genre to make its mark, especially if it’s not really bringing anything particularly novel to the table. Astronite only has a few gimmicks to offer in this respect, and none of them are especially strong.

First, it has what has come to be known as a 1-bit graphical style. You know, it’s basically monochrome. You’ve seen it in other games. Second, it uses that Souls mechanic where you leave your currency behind if you die and can only get it back if you can reach it without dying again. You’ve seen it in other games. It’s also really difficult. You’ve seen that in other games as well.

It’s a little more platforming-heavy than combat-heavy, so that at least separates it from some of the games it shares gimmicks with. Lest I sound too down on it all, the game isn’t bad or anything. The controls are responsive, the maps are enjoyable enough to explore, and it generally does a good job of checking off the Metroidvania boxes.

Checking off the boxes doesn’t really do it for me at this point, though. If you’re a hardcore Metroidvania fan who is hungry for something new and don’t mind a challenge, you’ll get what you need from Astronite. If you think it looks charming or something about its premise hits you right, you probably won’t regret the purchase. But I can’t really recommend Astronite with much vigor to the general player who is getting a little weary of this sort of affair.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Swordship ($19.99)

Swordship is cool. It looks cool, it sounds cool. Very nice vibe to it all. I think it’s probably the best part of the game, so I wanted to mention that upfront. This is a rather inventive take on the whole roguelite action game, one where your best offense is a good defense. Your ship has very little in the way of offensive capabilities, so your primary means of fending off the many enemies that hassle you is to trick them into attacking each other. This involves a lot of split-second maneuvers, and it feels utterly great when you pull that kind of thing off with style.

Your aim in each stage is to survive, but also to pick up packages that are dropped in and deliver them. Grabbing them is generally easy enough, but to deliver them you’ll have to sit still in a particular spot for a short yet somehow agonizingly long period of time. After your run is done, you have the choice to give away your ill-gained packages for points or keep them for an upgrade to your ship. When you die, and you likely will, you’ll get some permanent unlocks for your efforts. It’s that kind of thing. The more you play, the more you’ll have to play with.

The initial playthrough is tough but doable, but those extras you unlock extend things a bit further. Unfortunately, there just isn’t enough meat on the bones here for the kind of game this is. Score chasing is fun, but without an online leaderboard it’s hard to get too engaged. It’s frustrating because some thinking clearly went into the score mechanics here, offering better rewards to those who push their luck to the edge. If you don’t mind competing with yourself, you’ll get more from Swordship.

While Swordship has a good premise and an attractive presentation, it’s ultimately a little too thin for the asking price. I think there’s something to the dodge, dip, dive, and dodge gameplay that is at the core of the experience, you’ll likely get your fill of it within an evening or two. Games of this sort really rely on variety to keep creating fun situations run after run, and Swordship falls a bit short in that regard. Cool only carries you so far in the end.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    New Releases

    Kukoos: Lost Pets ($29.99)

Here’s a new 3D platformer that has an interesting gimmick wherein pets will grant you new abilities to use in the stages. A failed experiment has made all the Kukoos’ pets run amok, and you’ll have to help bring them back under control. There are twelve different Kukoos to play as, along with five different pets. Up to four players can team up via local multiplayer to tackle this one. I’ll be doing a review soon if you want more details.

    Paper Cut Mansion ($19.99)

This is a horror-themed roguelite action game where you have to gather evidence and clues over the course of your various runs, eventually ending up at one of twenty-seven different endings. The mansion you’re exploring has a cross-dimensional property to it, so you can sometimes jump to different versions of the same space. Despite this being a horror game, I will be doing a review of it. It’s not really that scary, to be honest.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Hey, a new low price for Steve Jackson’s Sorcery!. That one is definitely worth grabbing if you like gamebooks or quirky RPGs. The individual games of Capcom Arcade 2nd Stadium are on for half price, in case you’re the sort that likes to buy a la carte. Nothing too amazing in the outbox, but have a look through that too just to be sure.

I hope you all have a terrific Tuesday, and as always, thanks for reading!

Reviews Featuring ‘Romancing SaGa’ and ‘Front Mission’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 5th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got a few reviews for you. Square Enix’s Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered, Forever Entertainment’s Front Mission 1st: Remake, and Ratalaika’s Intrepid Izzy are in the judgement chair today, waiting for their scores. After that, we have a few new releases to check in on, plus some new and outgoing sales. Let’s get to it!

    Reviews & Mini-Views

Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered ($24.99)

If you’re into RPGs and own a Nintendo Switch, you probably have SaGa opinions by now. The series, which had always had a spotty localization record, went dormant in the West for a long time following the 2005 release of Romancing Saga: Minstrel Song on the PlayStation 2. I can only assume the Western release of Romancing SaGa 2 for mobile did better than expected, as we’ve received a veritable flood of SaGa releases since. All of those games have seen global releases regardless of their original localization status, meaning that we have just about the entire series available on the Switch. And now fate has brought us here, back to Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song.

As you can see by the title, this is a remaster of the PlayStation 2 game, which was itself a remake of the Super Famicom title Romancing SaGa. You never quite know how extensive the changes will be when the word ‘remaster’ is used, but in this case the changes are many and fairly significant. They range from new content (characters, story) to quality of life improvements, and the end result is a game that so greatly outclasses its previous incarnation that it renders it nearly irrelevant. I think it’s frankly as good as it can be without actually ripping the whole thing up and starting from scratch.

Curiously, part of the intention behind the original Minstrel Song was to go back to a more traditional and approachable format after the decidedly mixed response to Unlimited SaGa. Yes, this is the SaGa team (circa 2005) trying to make an easily digestible game. Does it work? Yes and no. At the end of the day, this is still a SaGa game. It has all the quirky systems you would expect from the series, has a tendency to be opaque and offer few clues about what to do, and focuses more on mechanics than story elements. It revels in its unorthodox nature, though it is rather orthodox in its unorthodoxy if you’re familiar with the series.

That last bit is perhaps the key to it. If you’re looking to get into the SaGa series, this is a decent enough starting point. It will teach you a lot about how the series works, and you may well find yourself able to appreciate the other games more having played through this one. I’m not sure it’s the best starting point anymore, but it’s a good one. But in the grand scheme of RPGs, this is still a game that requires a bit more work on the player’s part. You can choose from eight different characters at the start, and once you’ve gotten through the first bit for each, you’re more or less on your own to make your way in the world. It’s full of things to do and people to meet, though how much of that you find on any given playthrough is up to you. It wants you to replay it, and if you enjoy what it offers you almost certainly will do so.

If you have played any SaGa games in the past and had a good time with them, you’ll almost certainly like Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered. Its presentation is a little odd but the game itself is a fairly safe entry in the oddball brand. On the other side, if you haven’t been able to get into past games like SaGa Scarlet Grace or SaGa Frontier, nothing in here is going to change your mind. If you’re somehow fully new to this whole business, this isn’t the worst place to dip your foot in. Those tired of the same old JRPG mechanics or those who generally have an open mind may want to give this one a go.

Overall, Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song Remastered is a fantastic re-do of a game that had lots of room for improvement. SaGa fans will eat it up, and even if you’ve played the original you may want to check this out for its new content and additions. The look of the game may turn some off, and there are certainly some awkward carry-overs from its PlayStation 2 origins. It’s also a SaGa game through and through, and that’s either going to have you jumping with joy or running for the hills. Only two left now before they have to make a new one, right?

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Front Mission 1st: Remake ($34.99)

When I was young, I used to love drawing superheroes. Since I was still developing my artistic skills, I tended to do what many kids do: I found some panels from comics that I liked, and I copied them as best as I could. My copy was never quite as good as the real thing, of course. And it definitely wasn’t anything I could call my own style, even if I made a few changes here and there. At the same time, the result was a lot better-looking than what I would have been able to do at that time without any references, and I certainly learned a lot about how to draw from that practice.

I mean this in the nicest possible way: Forever Entertainment’s recent spate of remakes feels a lot like those drawings I did back then, and Front Mission 1st: Remake is no different. In almost every sense, this is a faithful remake of the Nintendo DS remake of the Super Famicom Front Mission. It makes very few changes to the nuts and bolts of the game, and whether that is a good thing or not is an exercise I leave to the reader. The presentation is where the biggest changes have happened, with everything looking very spiffy, three-dimensional, and high definition. I don’t particularly care for how clean it all looks, and I believe a great deal of the artistic value of the original has been lost here, but it’s a choice that was made.

Well, we’ve seen worse treatments of Square Enix games in remakes. For whatever has been lost here, this is still basically Front Mission on your Switch. And the second and third games will apparently be coming too. Probably in very similar form to this one. Ideal? Not really, but it’s better than nothing and I’m pretty sure that was Front Mission‘s future before this. Given how little out there is exactly like Front Mission, I’m happy it’s back in some form. It has a great story that you can play from two perspectives, and the tactical turn-based mech combat has a very different flavor from the usual fantasy theme we tend to see in games like these. Do be warned that Front Mission is the sort of strategy game that gives you very little wiggle room if you want to win. It can almost feel like untangling a puzzle rather than playing a TRPG.

As remakes go, Front Mission 1st: Remake gets the job done and not much more. Its cleaner visuals oddly make the thing look cheaper than the original at times, but the fundamental gameplay mechanics and story are both as sound as they ever were and generally carry the whole affair. This is a game that probably could have benefited from some bigger changes, but if all you’re looking for is a straight remake and don’t mind the new look, here you go.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    Intrepid Izzy ($10.99)

I don’t know if this was the intention behind Intrepid Izzy or not, but this really does feel like a Shantae game. To be fair, Shantae felt a bit like a Monster World game. Anyway, Intrepid Izzy. You play as the titular heroine as she explores various connected stages and uses her repertoire of moves and ability-granting suits to help her recover four gems and put an evil genie back in its bottle. You can buy items and talk to various characters in the town before heading out again. Well, it’s that kind of game.

You get about five or six hours of fun here, and while Intrepid Izzy may not keep pace visually I think it hangs well mechanically with similar games in the genre. It controls well, the suits add some fun gimmicks to play with, and the level designs are generally enjoyable to make your way through. The boss battles can be a little annoying, dragging on a little longer than needed, but combat is rather good overall. If you enjoy the Monster World or Shantae games, you might want to give this one a spin.

    SwitchArcade Score: 3.5/5

    New Releases

    Swordship ($19.99)

A roguelite dodge-em-up where the best offense is a good defense. Dodge through enemy fire, collect components for your ship, and balance your desire for a higher score against greater survivability as you battle through procedurally-generated stages. Since you can’t directly attack your foes, you’ll have to trick them into shooting each other. It can be very satisfying. I’ll have a review of this one soon.

    Goonya Monster ($19.99)

This is an asymmetrical multiplayer action game with cute character designs. Three players are the Busters while one player is the Monster. The Monster is stronger than any individual Buster, but the Busters have numbers in their favor. Up to four players can join in, either locally or via online multiplayer. Presumably, you can play alone against computer opponents. Probably not the best way to enjoy the game, mind you.

Cyborg Invasion Shooter 3: Savior of the World ($9.99)

A cheap third-person shooter for one player only. You travel through a variety of levels, battling enemies while you search for the exit to the next level. There are four weapon types along with some melee attacks. It’s very poorly made, all the way down to its fundamental design. But when the price is low enough, I find many people don’t care about the actual quality of the thing.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

The big Cyber Deals sale is finished, but the new sales are still showing a bit of a hangover from it. Unless you want to grab Rise: Race the Future, there isn’t anything in the inbox I’d get behind with much excitement. For that matter, there isn’t much in the outbox either. Well, I’ll let you do your thing and check those lists in the usual manner. See you in the conclusion.

‘Fire Emblem Heroes’, ‘Marvel Snap’, ‘LEGO Brawls’, ‘Tiny Tower’, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello everyone, and welcome to the week! It’s time once again for our look back at the noteworthy updates of the last seven days. Oh yes, here come the Christmas updates. Quite a lot of the games featured today are doing the holiday thing, with only a few doing their best to ignore the hub-bub, bub. Of course, you can keep an eye out for updates yourself by participating in the TouchArcade forums. This weekly summary is just here to fill you in on the things you might have missed. Let’s go for it!

    Fire Emblem Heroes, Free

Oh hey, time for another chapter of the main story of Fire Emblem Heroes. Book VII kicks off this Wednesday. You’ll have to battle the Golden Seer across time with the help of your new five-star Mythic Hero, Seiðr: Goddess of Hope. This update also includes improvements to the Arena, Binding Worlds, and a few other bits. But really, it’s mainly about that new Book VII content.

    Dan The Man, Free

Alright, game number two and we’re already into the Christmas updates. The Christmas event sees you handing out some, er, gifts to some deserving Gingerbread Men. There are some new event levels, and some new skins in the form of the Gingerbread Man and a green-suited Santa Claus. Naturally there are also some new emotes and event icons to unlock.

Tiny Tower: 8 Bit Retro Tycoon, Free

Here’s another Christmas-themed update, this time for the long-running tower builder. Get a reward every day from now until Christmas in the Advent Calendar, look for presents hidden in your tower, spin the lucky wheel for presents of your own, and enjoy the festive decorations. A pretty standard event for this game, but you can’t deny it nails the feeling of the season.

    Crossy Road Castle,

No Christmas stuff in this one, as near as I can tell. Instead, it adds a Sticker Book to the game. There are more than one hundred achievements to aim for, and you’ll need to get all of them if you want to fill out that Sticker Book with all of the stickers. Meta content! It can’t hurt, can it? Probably not. Do kids still do sticker books? Those were a big thing when I was a kid. I was under the impression they kind of fell off, but everything comes back sooner or later. I, for one, am waiting for Spider-Man pasta and tomato sauce to come back.

    Temple Run: Puzzle Adventure,

I’m letting this one stand in as the Obligatory Free-to-Play Matching Puzzle update for this week, despite it not really being free at all. Anarchy reigns, my friends. Nothing you can do to stop me. Anyway, this update adds a new set of shelves to the Treasure Trove, which means sixty new puzzles, new items to collect, and some new tournaments to test your mettle on. No Christmas stuff here either, I think. Oh well. If every kid was good, no kid would be. That’s what that guy from The Incredibles would say, probably.

    Angry Birds Reloaded,

Alright, back to the Christmas stuff. Angry Birds Reloaded has its holiday event lined up, and it’s… you know, it’s fine. Typical Angry Birds holiday update. You get daily rewards via Red’s Holiday Calendar and a new episode called Pie Hard Part II with forty-five festive new stages to play. Pie Harder? Pie Hard with a Vengeance? Live Free or Pie Hard? A Good Day to Pie Hard? Just tossing out some names for upcoming episodes. Call me, Rovio.

    MARVEL SNAP, Free

Marvel Snap gets its first feature-adding update since its wide launch, bringing in the new Token Shop along with Series 4 and Series 5 cards. Collect Tokens and trade them in for a rotating selection of cards you don’t have yet. Series 4 and Series 5 cards can potentially be found as soon as you start collecting Series 3, but they are both pretty rare. Despite a general lack of Spider-Man specific elements in this update, I am still awarding it the coveted UMMSotW for this week.

    Zookeeper World,

Zookeeper World also likes to keep up on the big holidays, and its update is right in step with the crowd. The Christmas 2022 event is now available, with some special hand-crafted puzzles for you to solve. Clear as many as you can to earn some cool Christmas rewards. That’s about all there is to it, but that’s probably all there needs to be to it.

    LEGO® Star Wars™: Castaways,

Well, we could hardly go a Life Day without checking on the most popular on-going Star Wars mobile game. LEGO Star Wars Castaways is having a Star Wars Holiday Special event where you can complete quests to earn season-appropriate minifig parts. The Island hub gets a winter makeover, and a new Holosims level has been added. This update also includes a new enemy, and some exclusive Hippodrome Trials. Santa Vader! Ugly Christmas Sweater Leia! A Christmas Pod Racer! They’re all here, and they are festively glorious.

    LEGO® Brawls,

Somehow, we’ve got two LEGO games with Christmas updates this week. LEGO Brawls is the other one. There isn’t another one after this. I promise. Anyway, some of the stuff from previous Christmas events returns. Get some limited-time winter and holiday unlocks while they’re hot and ready, and enjoy the sweet themed decorations. Collect toys at the Elf Clubhouse and try to be the first team to collect fifty presents. That seems reasonably merry, I’ll allow it.

That about wraps it up for last week’s significant updates. I’m sure I’ve missed some, though, so please feel free to comment below and let everyone know if you think something should be mentioned. As usual, major updates will likely get their own news stories throughout this week, and I’ll be back next Monday to summarize and fill in the blanks. Have a great week!

  • Reviews Featuring ‘The Knight Witch’ and ‘Donut Dodo’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

Reviews Featuring ‘The Knight Witch’ and ‘Donut Dodo’, Plus the Latest Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 2nd, 2022. So, today turned out a little quieter than the usual Friday. It was so quiet, in fact, that I decided to pen a few reviews. The Knight Witch, Railbound, and Donut Dodo get reviewed today, after which we head into the new release summaries for the latest games. We finish things up with the usual lists of new and outgoing sales, though they’re rather smaller than one might expect for a Friday. I guess we’re really on the other side of Black Friday now. Let’s get to it!

    Reviews

    The Knight Witch ($19.99)

I’d forgive anyone for being a bit tired of Metroidvania-style games at this point. A genre whose entries were once as hard to come by as musgravite has become one of the more flooded in recent years, such that you could only spend your time with the best of the best and still have a pile dozens of games deep. The Knight Witch tries to shake things up by cross-pollinating its fundamental Metroidvania structure with a free-roaming bullet-hell shooter. It works surprisingly well.

After you play through the prologue, you’re introduced to the main character of the game, a Knight Witch in training named Rayne. After her home is unexpectedly attacked by golems, she sets out to save her husband and the rest of her people while possibly saving the world along the way. As a Knight Witch, Rayne can fly around freely, direct magical shots in any direction, and make use of special Spell Cards to cast powerful spells. You can choose which Spell Cards you want to equip from your current collection, and they’ll come up in turn as you use them.

Rayne’s maneuverability means you don’t have to worry too much about platforming in this game, but you’ll be more than kept busy dodging bullets, enemies, and other hazards as you make your way through the game’s world. You can use the second stick to direct your shots, but Rayne will also do a pretty good job of auto-targeting if you’re too busy to worry about that. It controls well, which is great because things can get very intense in a hurry. The boss battles are genuine bullet hell, and not in a bad way. The story is engaging, and the world is interesting to explore even if it is a bit too linear for my liking.

The Knight Witch is a very well-made game that takes two very different genres and binds them together with a fair bit of success. You really have to be into both Metroidvania-style games and bullet-hell shooters to get into this one, but if you can check off both of those boxes without much thought, then this is a slam-dunk pick-up. It’s not the lengthiest of games, but it’s certainly quite satisfying thanks to its solid gameplay and charming presentation.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Railbound ($12.99)

Despite playing thousands of games in my life, it’s amazing how easily I can get sucked into a straightforward puzzle game if all the pieces are put together right. And yeah, that’s what Railbound does. A simple set-up: lay the tracks down and manipulate them such that the various cars of the train connect to the engine in the right order when you hit go. The game takes a few levels to walk you through its basic mechanics with a single car, then introduces a second car and starts to turn up the heat a little. By the end of the game’s one hundred and fifty plus stages, you’re dealing with multiple cars, various gimmicks, tight limits on track pieces, and more. Sometimes you have more track pieces than you need, and that throws another wrench into the works.

If you like logic puzzles, you’ll probably have a good time with Railbound. It’s a very focused game, but it has enough twists to keep things fresh through its rather generous amount of stages. The striking comic-style art and the little sounds of everything clacking together when you get it right only add to the game’s considerable amount of personality. All in all, a rather lovely little game that is nice to sit down with and puzzle out when you’ve got a spare hour or two.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    Donut Dodo ($4.99)

While they certainly had their time in the sun in the 1980s, single-screen action games fell out of vogue somewhere along the line. The whole “bigger is better” philosophy that we see so often in games, I suppose. But I think if history in the hobby has proven anything, limitations can often bring magical results. That’s why I was happy to see that type of game make little comebacks here and there via the indie scene and mobile gaming. At the same time, those games sometimes felt a little too derivative or plain. Donut Dodo is one of the latest kicks at this can, and I find it does a nice job of carving its own path with considerable confidence.

It ends up feeling a bit like a link between the early Donkey Kong-sized efforts and more substantial Bubble Bobble-like affairs. Like the former, you’ve got a fairly small number of stages to deal with. Just five, in fact. But they are all quite distinct from each other. The production values and playability take after more advanced examples of the genre, with your main character being very nimble and responsive as he makes his way through the vibrantly-colored obstacle courses. There’s a bit of depth to the scoring that seems to be inspired by Bomb Jack wherein you have to grab the flashing donuts in order to maximize your score, which adds a welcome extra layer of challenge.

While the small number of stages means there isn’t a whole ton to see here, Donut Dodo offers up a few different game modes each with their own leaderboards to challenge. Unfortunately despite what the eShop description seems to indicate, these leaderboards are local-only. Still, trying to one-up your scores in each of the modes does add a bit of longevity to the proceedings. Most importantly, it’s just a very enjoyable game to play. You don’t really need a lot of extra trimmings if a game gets that much right, and Donut Dodo does. That said, there are some options here for tweaking things like how the game displays. It’s all quite welcome in terms of allowing to set just how old-school an experience you want.

Like a donut, Donut Dodo is a small, sweet confection that you’ll likely chew through in a few bites. But the delicious taste will having you reaching back into the box for another, and you’ll likely come back for more here and there as you go about your other business. Given the highly reasonable price point, this arcade game-that-wasn’t is a more than fair pick-up for those pining for the quarter-munching days of the 80s.

    SwitchArcade Score: 4/5

    New Releases

    Siralim Ultimate ($19.99)

Earlier this year, the latest Siralim game hit mobile. And here it is on Nintendo Switch! If you’ve played any of the Siralim games before, you know what to expect here. If you haven’t, this is a wildly deep monster collection RPG. There are more than 1200 creatures you can collect, and there’s a fusion system somewhat similar to the Shin Megami Tensei games. I’ll be doing a full review of this one soon, but as long as you don’t mind the style of the visuals there is a lot to love here for fans of monster RPGs.

    Super Kiwi 64 ($2.99)

Here’s the latest from Diplodocus Games, a developer that I feel is constantly under-valuing its work. I fear that is happening again with this cute little eight-level 3D platforming ode to the Nintendo 64 days. Use a variety of abilities to tackle the stages in any order you like, hunting down secrets and just having a good time making your way around the decent-sized environments. A fine way to spend a few bucks today.

    Intrepid Izzy ($10.99)

An action-platformer with some beat-em-up style action for dispatching your foes, Intrepid Izzy sees you using a variety of costumes and their unique abilities to make your way through reasonably large levels in order to save the world from a bad genie or something. It also has a rather strong soundtrack. I’ll have a review of this one early next week, but I’ve enjoyed what I’ve played well enough so far.

    Silver Nornir ($14.99)

Wow, this brings back memories. This was the last game KEMCO released on iOS before I was hired at TouchArcade. It comes from all the way back in 2013, and is a product of developer WorldWideSoftware. I wonder what happened to them? Anyway, it’s a pretty generic RPG but the story has a bit more work put into it than we tend to see with, say, EXE-Create’s stuff. It’s set in a world that has already been destroyed twice by a great calamity, and you’re trying to prevent it from being destroyed a third time. You can find it cheaper on mobile, as usual. It’s been a long while since I played this one, but I remember it being decent by KEMCO standards.

    Sakura Succubus 6 ($9.99)

It’s the sixth in this series now and you’re probably more than familiar how the Sakura Succubus series of visual novels works by now. The premise this time is that you go to a fictional European country and the princess there falls for you. Make some choices and try to find a happy ending. You don’t need me to tell you if this is for you or not.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

I think this is the smallest list of Friday sales we’ve seen in a long time. I suppose that’s because the Cyber Deals sales are still kicking until Monday. Don’t forget about those, by the way. The next time we meet here, it will be too late. Not much too interesting in the new sales for today, and the outbox is… well, it’s two games. Look over those Cyber Deals again, I guess?

‘Romancing SaGa’, ‘Inscryption’, Plus Today’s Other New Releases and the Latest Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for December 1st, 2022. Wow, December. We’re already at the last month of the year? Phew. I have a lot of work to finish in the next few weeks. As for today, we’ve got a little news, a lot of releases, some sales, and… that’s it, actually. Sorry, I don’t know where I was going with that. Luckily, I managed to prepare most of this yesterday so that today’s hospital trip didn’t keep me from having an article for you today. Let’s go!

    News

‘Sonic Frontiers’ Free Update Content Plan Revealed

Sonic Frontiers turned out to be a bit of a pleasant surprise. Sure, it’s a hot mess. But better a hot mess than a cold one. I think? I should have planned that metaphor better. Anyway, SEGA today announced plans for some free content updates to the game, and it looks rather substantial. All of that will be coming in 2023, but there is one last treat for owners of the game before Christmas. Available from December 21st, a free Holiday Cheer Suit DLC can be downloaded so that Sonic can get dressed up for the season. Hey, not bad.

    New Releases

Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song- Remastered ($24.99)

Times sure have changed for the SaGa series. This is a remaster of the PlayStation 2 remake of the Super Famicom Romancing SaGa, the fourth SaGa game and first in its sub-series. Back when the PlayStation 2 version came out in the West in 2005, it was met with, to be very kind, a middling reception. But here in 2022, there’s a bit more appreciation for SaGa‘s quirky brand of role-playing fun, and this re-release seems to be getting a generally better appraisal. I’ll have a review of this one soon, but SaGa fans don’t need to wait for my go-ahead.

Arcade Archives Tetris The Grand Master ($7.99)

This is the 300th release in the Arcade Archives line, and Hamster has found a suitably special game to ring it in with. Arika’s Tetris: The Grand Master originally released in arcades in 1998 and kicked off a series that proved to be very popular with expert Tetris players. This is the first time the original arcade game has come to home consoles, and only the second appearance at all of the series outside of arcades. If you like Tetris, this is a very appealing prospect. However, this release has a number of issues, breaking from Hamster’s usual reliability. It’s apparently being worked on, but you might want to hold off until the fixes arrive.

    Inscryption ($19.99)

Here’s another roguelite deck-building game, but you probably haven’t seen one quite like this. It might seem fairly ordinary at first, but the more you play the more it becomes something very different. One of those games where the less I say the better, since a lot of the enjoyment comes from how it plays on your expectations. Mikhail really wanted to review this one, so he’ll have his thoughts on it for all of you soon enough.

    Donut Dodo ($4.99)

If we imagine a world where single-screen arcade action games didn’t go out of vogue, we almost certainly would have seen something like Donut Dodo raking in the quarters in arcades everywhere. You have to collect all of the donuts in each stage, with the final one being the giant donut that tends to be in the general vicinity of a large trouble-making dodo bird. You get five distinct levels plus a bonus stage, and there are online leaderboards included so that you can struggle to get your initials up at the top of the pile. I’ll have a review of this one early next week, but I can already say that I like it an awful lot.

    Railbound ($12.99)

A cute puzzle game with simple mechanics that somehow produce some devilishly delightful knots to untangle. All you have to do in each stage is arrange the tracks so that the cars will connect to the engine in the numbered order. You get more than one hundred and fifty of these stages, and the game sprinkles in enough clever gimmicks to keep things fresh all throughout. I’ve been playing this one for a while now, so I should have a review ready soon. It’s also available on mobile, and it plays great there too.

    Sword of the Vagrant ($9.99)

Wow, this game has some gorgeous art. Does it play as good as it looks? No, not really. But it plays well enough. It’s a very ordinary side-scrolling action game with some RPG elements, and you’ve probably played more than a few games like it before. But it mostly does what you would expect it to, and for ten dollars that is probably enough.

Japanese Escape Games The Room Without Doors ($9.99)

Here’s the latest in the Japanese Escape Games series. This time it ditches any attempt at realism and instead sticks you in a room without doors. If you’ve played any of the games in this series before, you should have a general idea of what to expect. Heck, even if you haven’t played any of them I’m sure you can put two and two together. Okay, now make The Door Without Rooms.

    Grisaia Phantom Trigger 07 ($24.99)

The seventh full chapter in the Grisaia Phantom Trigger series of visual novels has arrived on Switch. I assume if you have played through all of the games up to this point, you’re not going to stop now. And if you haven’t, you certainly shouldn’t start with the seventh one. So yes, it doesn’t really matter much what I write here. There are some new characters in this penultimate episode, and it generally does the job of setting up all the pieces for the final chapter.

    The Outbound Ghost ($24.99)

This turn-based RPG is another one that is trying to evoke the feel of the Paper Mario games back when they were turn-based RPGs. It’s… okay. I wish I could say more enthusiastic words about it because it definitely has its heart in the right place, but it’s just kind of meandering and poorly-paced. It’s not a terribly long game, but it feels like it runs out of steam after only a few hours of play. But hey, that’s just my take. Perhaps you’ll like it better. The ghost-themed premise is certainly unique, and I love that your party members are simply facets of your own past personality that you’ve unlocked.

    Work From Home ($19.99)

As you can probably guess from that screenshot, this is a co-op party game for up to four players via local multiplayer. You have to pretend to work while the boss is watching, and then completely slack off in various ways when they’re not. It seems to have potential, but I always have to put these kinds of games through their paces with my family before I can give any kind of proper verdict on them. Here’s hoping, though.

    Super Planet Life ($9.99)

Sometimes you’re reading some good old Silver Surfer comics and you find yourself wondering what Ego the Living Planet’s life is like. Well, here is a game that helps you live that planet life. Search the universe for friends and carefully manage your resources to be the best planet you can be. Battle through dungeons that lead to the center of yourself, mingle with space gods, the usual stuff. I don’t know if this game is good, but it’s weird and that’s usually enough for me.

    Warp Drive ($24.99)

A stylish high-speed racer with a unique teleportation gimmick, Warp Drive looks and sounds super-cool but it actually kind of so-so in practice. It’s fine enough as an Apple Arcade game where you can play it a bit alongside a ton of other games, but I just don’t feel like there’s enough zip to the gameplay or meat on the bones to justify the price tag on Switch for me. That said, I recommend giving it a go on Apple Arcade to see if you like it well enough to buy a version to keep. You may well get more out of it than I did.

    Lover Pretend ($49.99)

Here’s the latest otome visual novel. Our main character, Chiyuki, has two problems. First, she wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and become a scriptwriter. Second, she wants to find the father she has never met. She gets a job as an assistant for an upcoming film, but somehow ends up being one of the stars. Through this wacky series of events, she might end up solving both of her problems and earning some quality smooches along the way. The usual archetypes of handsome boys await. Our pal Mikhail is working on a review for this one.

    Papetura ($9.99)

This is a short, beautiful little adventure game about two creatures named Pape and Tura who are trying to keep their house from being burnt down. Just about everything in the game has a handcrafted paper look to it, and it really is striking. So long as you come into it knowing that it’s more of an experience than a mechanics-focused game, I think most will find this one worth the trip.

    Tomomi ($7.99)

Wait, we’re at the end of the list and there aren’t any trash games today? Seriously? I call that a win. Tomomi is a really fun albeit brief Metroidvania-style game about a girl, her katana, and the things she does with that katana. This is a pretty decent way to spend eight bucks, provided you’re not completely opposed to playing another Metroidvania-style game.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Likely a lot more sales have popped by the time you’re reading this, but it’s not a bad list for now. Supaplex, Action Arcade Wrestling, and Station Manager are hitting new lows, and there are a number of other games decent enough to take a punt on there. Take a gander at the outbox too. Nothing super amazing in there, but there could be something you want to grab.

‘Skullgirls Mobile’ Major Update 5.2 Out Now Adding Black Dahlia, Retakes, XP Treats, Free Gifts, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Developer Hidden Variable pushed out a major update for Skullgirls Mobile (Free) a few hours ago. The version 5.2 update brings in Black Dahlia (before the console and PC game), Retakes, XP Treats, free gifts, and more. Since launch, Skullgirls Mobile has gotten a ton of support, and it is an absolute essential on any platform if you enjoy fighting games. I included it in our best fighting games to play on Steam Deck feature and continue to enjoy it on Steam Deck. Skullgirls Mobile will also be adding Marie next year. Check out the full patch notes for the update here for the massive list of changes and additions.

    skullgirls black dahlia

I’m still surprised that Black Dahlia arrived in the mobile game before Skullgirls 2nd Encore on PC and consoles. Skullgirls Mobile is available for free on iOS and Android right now. Skullgirls 2nd Encore is available on PC and all consoles with it arriving on Xbox soon. Following Black Dahlia’s launch, it is going to be interesting to see when Marie is released in the mobile game and also how updates and DLC are handled for the newer console releases that are planned to arrive in the near future. Do you play Skullgirls on any platform and what do you think of the new DLC announcement?

Fishing Spirits M’, ‘Unsolved Case’, and More – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Each and every day new mobile games are hitting the App Store, and so each week we put together a big old list of all the best new releases of the past seven days. Back in the day the App Store would showcase the same games for a week, and then refresh those features each Thursday. Because of that developers got into the habit of releasing their games throughout Wednesday or very early Thursday in order to hopefully get one of those coveted features spots. Nowadays the App Store refreshes constantly, so the need for everyone to release all on the same day has diminished. Still, we’ve kept our weekly Wednesday night format as for years that’s the time people knew to check TouchArcade for the list of new games. • ‘Elevator Action Returns’, ‘Astronite’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

‘Elevator Action Returns’, ‘Astronite’, and Today’s Other New Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 30th, 2022. We’re finishing up the month on a quiet note, friends. There are five new releases to look at today, with a few notables amongst them. We’ve got summaries for all of them, of course. We’ve also got the new sales (not much) and outgoing sales (quite a lot) to check out. So let’s get to that checking out, shall we?

    New Releases

    Front Mission 1st: Remake ($34.99)

You might remember Forever Entertainment from its bland but serviceable remakes of Panzer Dragoon and House of the Dead. Well, here’s a bland but serviceable remake of the DS remake of Front Mission. It sucks almost all of the charm out of the visuals but otherwise seems to have its t’s crossed and i’s dotted. Forever will also be doing remakes of Front Mission 2 and Front Mission 3, apparently. So yes, do look forward to those.

    Elevator Action -Returns- S-Tribute ($14.99)

Elevator Action is back… in Saturn form! If you’ve never played Elevator Action Returns before, it’s a sequel that expands so much on the original it’s almost hard to consider them the same series. Except it still has the elevators, so I guess the title tells no lies. This is an emulation of the Saturn version, which itself is a pricey rarity. We’ve seen this emulator in action in a few other releases on Switch, and it seems to be in better shape these days than it was with the Cotton releases it debuted with. This one is definitely worth punching a ticket for.

    Astronite ($14.99)

Hey, it’s one of those games with what has come to be known as 1-bit graphics. This one is a Metroidvania-style affair about an explorer trying to eliminate an invasive species from their home planet. There’s a huge map to explore, power-ups to acquire, challenges to beat, and some wildly difficult bosses to fight. This is a tough one to be sure, but my brief time with it tells me it’s at least quite well-made. I might review this one, but I’ll have to see if my schedule allows it.

    Until the Last Plane ($9.99)

You might take a look at that screenshot and think this is a basic shoot-em-up. Then you might read the description and think this is a simulation game. It’s not really either of those things, though. It’s just a series of short, repetitive mini-games all dressed up in a World War II theme. It more or less plays its hand completely within a half hour, and it’s not much of a hand.

    Megalan 11 ($9.99)

A bit of a relaxed exploration game with some very light puzzle and survival elements. You’re on a strange planet, your ship is busted from a bad landing, and you have eleven days to escape with your crew of five. While reviews aren’t overwhelmingly good on other platforms, it does seem to have its fans. Maybe you will be one of them.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Hey, I said the list of new sales was short. I don’t even need to highlight anything from it, you’ve probably already seen the full list just by darting your eyes down. So instead I will direct you to the outbox, where great games like Beacon Pines, Chasm, Danmaku Unlimited 3, Paradise Killer, and Horizon Chase Turbo are wrapping up their latest discounts.

‘Genshin Impact’ Genius Invokation TCG Gameplay Trailer Showcased Ahead of Release Date – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Last week, HoYoverse revealed the release date and more information detailing the upcoming Genshin Impact (Free) version 3.3 ‘All Senses Clear, All Existence Void’ update. This update brings in new characters, the interlude for the Archon Quest, a new season of events and challenges, and the Genius Invokation TCG. I’m always interested in card-based min-games in RPGs, and hope this one ends up being a regular in updates with new cards and content coming. Ahead of next week’s launch, HoYoverse released a new gameplay video for Genius Invokation TCG. Watch the Genshin Impact 3.3 update card game demo showcase video below:

As mentioned before, this update will also add Italian and Turkish text support when it goes live on December 7th worldwide. Pre-installation for iOS, Android, and PC will go live a few days prior as usual. If you haven’t checked out Genshin Impact yet, you can download it for free on the App Store for iOS here and on Google Play for Android here. The PC version is available on the official website here and the Epic Games Store. If you play on iOS, with iOS 14.5 or iPadOS 14.5 and later, you can use PS5 and Xbox Series X|S controllers to play Genshin Impact. We featured Genshin Impact as our Game of the Week when it released and awarded it our 2020 Game of the Year. I also featured it as one of the best iOS games to play with a controller. Have you been playing Genshin Impact recently and what do you think of the game’s current state?

Reviews Featuring ‘Rogue Legacy 2’, Plus ‘The Knight Witch’ and Today’s Other Releases and Sales – TouchArcade

    [ad_1]

Hello gentle readers, and welcome to the SwitchArcade Round-Up for November 29th, 2022. In today’s article, we’ve got a full review of Rogue Legacy 2. I wanted to do more reviews, but life got in the way in a big way today. There’s a bit of news to cover about Nintendo Switch Sports, so we’ll take a minute to look at that. After that, there are a couple of cool new releases today, and we’ve got summaries of both of them. We wrap things up with the usual lists of new and outgoing sales. Let’s go!

    News

The Golf Update is Now Available in ‘Nintendo Switch Sports’

Nintendo Switch Sports released back in April, and one of the more surprising things about the game is that it launched without one of the more popular sports from Wii Sports: golfing. Nintendo indicated that it would be added in a free update later, and that “later” is today. There are a few things in the update beyond the addition of golf as an event, but you can go ahead and watch the above video for the general outline. If you own the game, you can just go ahead and update to get all the new goodies. And I know some of you must own it, because this game has already sold almost five million copies despite what seemed to be a middling reception.

    Reviews & Mini-Views

    Rogue Legacy 2 ($24.99)

The original Rogue Legacy, released in 2013, did not create the term ‘roguelite’. Its embrace of the term, however, arguably brought that it to a wider audience than it had ever seen before. While it was a side-scrolling action game with a lots of elements from roguelike games, its system wherein players could earn upgrades that persisted even after dying opened a veritable fire hydrant of more approachable takes on what had been a rather demanding genre up to that point. It’s now rarer to see a live/die/repeat game without a persistent upgrade of some sort than the opposite. That is the Rogue Legacy legacy.

So here we are, almost ten years and roughly a million roguelite games later. The original Rogue Legacy still has its charms but is no longer as unique as it once was. Can a follow-up have the same impact the original did? Well, probably not. But it can certainly benefit from the many refinements this little category has seen over the years to create a better, fuller game. And so it does. Rogue Legacy 2 keeps what worked in the first, piles up some new features, and enhances the overall playability of the moment-to-moment action considerably. While it isn’t as fresh as the first, it’s certainly a more impressive game.

There are a lot of additions here, but I’m just going to touch on a few of the bigger ones. First, there are more classes with greater diversity of gameplay between them. When paired with certain traits, relics, and so on, some of them feel like they popped in from a completely different game. All of the classes are fun to play, though some take a lot more skill to fully take advantage of than others. To go with that, there are a lot more moves at your disposal. One of the things I thought could use some work in Rogue Legacy was the basic combat and movement, which seemed content to be good enough and not more than that. I wouldn’t say Rogue Legacy 2 is up to the finest in the genre in that regard, but the wider arsenal of actions and interactions certainly is an improvement.

Hm, this is all chaining together nicely. You see, part of that expansion of actions is that the game has adopted a Metroidvania-style structure. The areas are still procedurally generated, but there are certain kinds of obstacles you’ll need special abilities to overcome. You’ll find those in a particular order, and once you’ve got them they will stay permanently unlocked between generations of heroes. That gives a little more structure to things, results in better and more interesting layouts, allows the game to pepper in lore in a somewhat linear fashion, and gives you an expanding move set that helps spice things up as you play.

The last major addition I want to mention is the new House Rules. These let you customize the gameplay experience in a variety of ways, making it easier or harder as you like. I think this is a really good addition to the game, and is perhaps the change most in spirit with what the first game did. I firmly believe one of the reasons why Rogue Legacy caught on was because its persistent upgrades made it more appealing to a wider audience than previous games in the genre were. Rogue Legacy 2‘s House Rules cast that net even wider, allowing you to adjust the difficulty in either direction.

Rogue Legacy 2 sometimes feels a bit too familiar, but it’s a better, more well-rounded game than its predecessor in a wide variety of ways. There are so many top-notch games of this sort on the Nintendo Switch already that you may not immediately be drawn to this game due to it lacking any flashy new feature, but those who give it a chance will find a degree of substance that even the first game was lacking.

    New Releases

    The Knight Witch ($19.99)

A twin-stick bullet-hell style shoot-em-up crossed with Metroidvania-style non-linear exploring and upgrading? The Knight Witch is, if nothing else, distinct. You use the left stick to zip around in the air as you like, and the right stick is used to aim your shots. You also have a selection of spell cards you can use to cast various types of magic, which reminds me a little of Cotton. It’s pretty fun. I’ll have a review of it soon if you need more details.

    Soccer Story ($19.99)

Another sports game crossed with an adventure game, arriving ahead of that other sports game crossed with an adventure game. In this one, you are granted a magic soccer ball and tasked with taking soccer back from the evil Soccer Inc. and restoring the love of the game to the land. You’ll do some exploring, interacting with characters, and puzzle-solving, but it always comes back to playing a little footy. And hey, if you feel like it, you can play some of that aforementioned footy with up to four players via local multiplayer. I think Mikhail is doing a review of this one for us, so he’ll likely have more details for you when that is ready to go.

    Sales

    (North American eShop, US Prices)

Not much new today, but of particular note is that Sakuna: Of Rice & Ruin is at its lowest price ever. It’s a wonderful game and I will advocate for it at every opportunity. If you want to go all-in on LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, there’s a new low price for that too. You can get Andor characters! Neat. The main thing I’ll point at in the outbox is the latest sale from Inti-Creates coming to a close. You can’t go wrong with most of their games, and those prices are solid. Have a look through both lists.

‘Dead Cells’ Break the Bank, Enter the Panchaku, and Breaking Barriers Updates Out Now, Game Discounted for a Limited Time – TouchArcade

Motion Twin and Playdigious’ brilliant Dead Cells ($4.99) has finally gotten three major patches in a single update on iOS. It should be out on Android very soon if it isn’t already when you’re readying this. If you haven’t bought Dead Cells on mobile yet, read my review on the game’s current state here. Barring the many new additions and enhancements available, this update is also supposed to address the MFi controller issues on iPhone and iPad, but it crashes when I use my Kishi V2 and BackBone One to attack. I’ve reached out to Playdigious to check in on this and will update this story when I hear back. Check out details for the Break the Bank update here, Enter the Panchaku update here, and Breaking Barriers update here. Watch the trailer below:

If you’re curious about Dead Cells on mobile, I did an interview with Playdigious covering it and Streets of Rage 4. Read it here. If you’re on iOS, you can buy it on the App Store. Check it out on Google Play here for Android. It is discounted for a limited time to celebrate the major update. If you’re unsure whether to grab it on mobile or Switch, read my comparison here. Now that these major updates are out on mobile, I hope we get the others soon. What do you think of Dead Cells and its current state on mobile and have you been playing it regularly?

    Update: Added new trailer.
