Thornton Police arrested three suspects on Jan. 14 after a burglary in the 9600 block of Huron Street resulted in a shooting that killed one person, according to Thornton police.
The case was presented to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office, which filed the following charges:
Vincent Rios was charged with possession with intent to manufacture or distribute a controlled substance. Leo Bonavich was charged with first-degree burglary and a crime of violence. Richard Hernandez was charged with first-degree burglary, vehicular eluding and a crime of violence.
Police responded to the situation after a 911 call came in about gunshots in the 9600 block of Huron Street around 4:30 a.m.
The caller described a “suspect vehicle. Police saw the vehicle leaving the area and started chasing it. Police stopped the vehicle by hitting it near West 56th Avenue and Federal Boulevard, just off of Interstate 76
Four people were inside the vehicle, including one man who had been fatally shot. The remaining three suspects were arrested, including one who tried to flee the scene on foot.
Officers also found a 35-year-old man near the scene of the shooting who had also been shot and was taken to the hospital, but did not have life-threatening injuries, police said.
Investigators believe the group of suspects was trying to break into a home when they were confronted by people living there, which is when the shooting happened.

The collision occurred around 1:13 AM, when a gray Nissan Rogue did not stop at a red traffic light on Franklin Boulevard near 47th Avenue. It hit a silver Nissan Rogue before it entered a parking lot and struck a fence, according to a preliminary CHP investigation.
The driver of the gray SUV was pronounced dead on scene and two passengers were taken to local hospitals with major injuries. The driver of the silver vehicle and one passenger were also hospitalized with major injuries, CHP said.
CHP said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

A three-vehicle crash about 9 miles south of Franktown on Monday killed five people, including three children, and seriously injured two others.
The accident happed at 4:39 p.m. when the driver of a Toyota hatchback headed south on Colorado 83 in Douglas County lost control and went off the right shoulder, the Colorado State Patrol said. The Toyota drove back on the road and then rolled into the northbound lane.
A Ford sedan heading north was hit head-on by the Toyota, which kept traveling and struck a Ford pickup, causing minor damage.
The State Patrol said the driver of the Toyota was pronounced dead at the scene after being ejected from the vehicle. The man driving the Ford sedan and three of five children in the vehicle were pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other juveniles in the sedan were flown to a nearby medical facility. The pickup driver wasn’t injured.
The State Patrol said it’s not known why the driver of the Toyota lost control. Colorado 83 remained closed Monday night as the investigation and cleanup continued.
The Douglas County Coroner will identify those deceased after all the families have been notified.
An 85-year-old Arizona man died after his pickup truck hauling a trailer rolled into the center median at Interstate 25 and the CanAm Highway exit near Fountain on Friday morning.
Colorado State Patrol said the pickup truck was traveling northbound on I-25 when the man lost control and it rolled into the center median, ejecting him.
The pickup truck and the trailer came to rest in the center median. The far left travel lane is closed for the crash investigation.
The Colorado State Patrol is leading the investigation and responded to the crash at around 6:25 a.m.
The timeline for reopening all lanes is unknown. Drivers should expect delays in the area and visit COTrip.org for real-time traffic conditions.
Eight children were killed in domestic violence incidents across Colorado in 2024 — the highest number since the state began tracking annual domestic violence deaths eight years ago, according to a report released Tuesday by the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Board.
The youngest child to die was 3-month-old Lesley Younghee Kim, who was found dead with her mortally injured mother in a Denver home in July 2024.
“It’s a wakeup call, I hope, for people in Colorado,” said Whitney Woods, executive director of the Rose Andom Center, which helped compile the board’s report. “This is a real problem.”
Seventy-two people died in domestic violence incidents statewide in 2024. That’s up 24% from the 58 domestic violence deaths in 2023 but remains below pandemic-era peaks, when 94 people died in 2022 and 92 people died in 2021.
The pandemic years also saw elevated numbers of children killed, with four children killed in 2021 and six in 2022. Across the other years, no more than three children died in any given year, the board’s reports show.
Five of the eight children killed in 2024 died amid custody disputes between their parents, the report found.
“These findings highlight custody litigation as a high-risk period for families experiencing domestic violence and point to the urgent need for stronger safeguards within family court proceedings,” the report concluded. The legislatively-mandated board, chaired by Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser, began tracking domestic violence statewide in 2017 and makes annual recommendations for policy changes aimed at preventing deaths.
The fatality review board last year recommended that the state’s child and family investigators and parental responsibilities evaluators go through training on domestic violence, particularly around understanding the dynamics of domestic violence and how to evaluate the risk of lethality during the custody process. The Colorado Judicial Department is still developing such training, with work continuing in 2026, the report noted.
“That is to my mind a call to action,” Weiser said. “And we are working with the court system on this right now — how do we make sure our family courts and the general system for addressing domestic violence provides protection, support, services, so that we don’t see these deaths happen?”
The increase in domestic violence deaths came even as statewide homicides declined 17% to a five-year low. Roughly one in six homicide victims in Colorado in 2024 died during domestic violence incidents. Domestic violence victims account for 18% of all homicide victims statewide, the highest proportion in five years, the annual review found.
“That is really alarming in this line of work, for us,” Woods said.
The increase in domestic violence homicides amid the drop in overall homicides “suggests that while broader public safety interventions may be reducing general violence, they are not having the same impact on (domestic violence fatalities),” the report found.
The increase also comes at a time when many organizations aimed at preventing domestic violence and supporting survivors are facing funding shortfalls and uncertainty, Woods noted.
Among the 72 people killed in 2024, 38 were victims of domestic violence, 26 were perpetrators of domestic violence and eight — all of the children — were considered ‘collateral victims.’ The victims were overwhelmingly female and the perpetrators overwhelmingly male.
Across all 72 deaths, guns were used 75% of the time. The second most common type of attack was asphyxiation, which was involved in 8% of all deaths, followed by a knife or sharp object, used in 7% of deaths.
“Occasionally, people will make comments like, ‘If someone wants to kill someone they can kill them with a knife,’” Weiser said. “I think it’s fair to say access to firearms makes it far more likely that a domestic violence perpetrator will kill somebody.”
Removing guns from a suspect when domestic violence begins can be an effective prevention strategy, Woods said.
The report makes a number of recommendations aimed at preventing domestic violence deaths, including passing a new state law that would require police officers to take guns (those in plain sight or discovered during a lawful search) from domestic violence suspects at the time of arrest and hold onto those guns for 48 hours or until the suspect first appears in court. Suspects could then retrieve their guns if they were allowed to legally posses them.
“By empowering officers to disarm abusers immediately at the scene, the proposed law would provide urgent protection for victims and responding officers, create a period to reduce the chance of lethal escalation, and provide a tool for law enforcement to fill the relinquishment gap,” the report reads.
The report also recommends adjusting Colorado’s laws around third-degree assault, suggests law enforcement should give resources to both people involved in a domestic violence incident even when there is not enough evidence to make an arrest, and widening the scope of material gathered by local fatality review boards.

A child was killed and two others were injured when they were struck by a vehicle in the San Carlos area on Monday morning.
The children were struck around 7:20 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Lake Badin Avenue and Jackson Drive, according to the San Diego Police Department.
Police reported one child died and another suffered a compound arm fracture. The third child’s condition was unknown. The children’s ages were not immediately available.
The driver remained at the scene after the crash, the department said. It was unclear what caused the incident.
A woman died and an infant was injured when a Mercedes SUV driven by the woman collided head-on with an RTD bus Thursday evening in Aurora.
Police responded to the crash at 5:18 p.m. at East 30th Avenue and East Parklane Drive. The woman and the infant, who wasn’t restrained, were thrown from the vehicle. Both were taken to the hospital.
Police said the woman died shortly after arriving at the hospital. The infant remains hospitalized with serious injuries.
Their names weren’t released.
Several passengers on the RTD bus were checked for injuries. One passenger and the bus driver were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police are looking at speed and possible intoxication as possible factors involved in the crash.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death of a man found in Ramona on Sunday afternoon..
Deputies from the San Diego County Sheriffs’ Department’s Ramona substation responded to the 700 block of Eighth Street at about 2:35 p.m. Sunday about an assault with a deadly weapon.
“Upon their arrival, Deputies discovered an adult individual suffering from traumatic injuries,” the department said in a release. “Unfortunately, the individual succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
“Based on information gathered so far, this appears to be an isolated incident and there is no danger to the community,” the release added.
Homicide detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and gathering more evidence, the sheriff’s department said. The motivation and circumstances of the crime are still under investigation, they added.

Tesla’s advanced Autopilot driving system malfunctioned and caused one of the electric car maker’s Colorado employees to drive off the road and die in a fiery crash, a newly filed wrongful death lawsuit alleges.
The widow of Hans Von Ohain says her husband was driving back from golfing in Evergreen with a friend on May 16, 2022, when the Autopilot system “unexpectedly caused the 2021 Tesla Model 3 to sharply veer to the right, leading it off the pavement” on Upper Bear Creek Road.
The 33-year-old Von Ohain, who was intoxicated, fought to regain control of the vehicle, “but, to his surprise and horror,” the car drove off the road and into a tree, where it burst into flames, according to the 16-page complaint filed May 3 in Clear Creek County District Court.
The Colorado State Patrol said in its 403-page crash report that the car’s condition after the crash made it impossible to access data to determine whether the self-driving feature was engaged at the time.
But the passenger in the car, Erik Rossiter, who suffered injuries in the crash, told investigators that Von Ohain was using the autonomous drive feature on the trip home, according to the CSP’s final report.
“It was uncomfortable,” he told troopers. “The car would swerve off toward the side of the road periodically and bring itself back.”
The vehicle was traveling 41 mph at the time of the crash, just above the 40 mph speed limit, according to the CSP report.
Von Ohain also used the self-driving feature on the way to the golf course, Rossiter said — a trip he called “a bit nerve-wracking.”
An autopsy report showed the driver’s blood-alcohol level at three times the legal limit. His widow, Nora Bass, told the Washington Post in February that she had been unable to find an attorney to take the case due to his intoxication.
“Regardless of how drunk Hans was, (Tesla CEO Elon) Musk has claimed that this car can drive itself and is essentially better than a human,” Bass told the newspaper. “We were sold a false sense of security.”
Efforts by The Denver Post to reach Bass or her attorney were unsuccessful.
If Von Ohain was, in fact, using the Full Self-Driving feature, it would make his death the first known fatality involving Tesla’s most advanced driver-assistance technology, the Washington Post reported.
Bass and her attorneys allege Tesla knowingly released the self-driving system in vehicles when it was just a prototype and unready for consumers.
Tesla did not respond to messages from The Post seeking comment. Von Ohain worked for the Texas-based carmaker as a recruiter.
Federal regulators have logged more than 900 crashes in Teslas since they began requiring automakers to report accidents in 2021 involving driver-assistance systems, the Washington Post found. At least 40 resulted in serious or fatal injuries.
Tesla’s Autopilot system has been highly controversial and subject to intense scrutiny from authorities and consumers.
In December, the company issued a recall for nearly all of its 2 million U.S. cars aimed at improving driver attention.
Two years ago, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that the Tesla Autopilot’s features may not have sufficient guardrails to “prevent driver misuse.” The federal probe came after a series of Teslas using the system had run into parked emergency vehicles.
Reuters on Wednesday reported U.S. prosecutors are looking into whether Tesla committed securities or wire fraud by misleading consumers and investors about the technology’s capabilities.
(FOX40.COM) — One person is dead and another is hospitalized after a shooting in Stockton.
Around 9:33 a.m. on Sunday, the Stockton Police Department responded to the 600 block of El Camino Avenue for a report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers said they found two men, ages 19 and 70, with gunshot wounds. Both of them were transported to a local hospital, however, the youngest was pronounced dead.
SPD said a suspect is in custody and the shooting is under investigation.
(FOX40.COM) — A minivan with seven occupants inside was in a crash that killed at least four people on Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
At around 10:07 p.m., a 2011 Toyota Sienna minivan was traveling westbound on Highway 120, west of Highway 99, between 60 and 65 mph. Police said the roadway was damp from rainy weather conditions earlier in the evening. For unknown reasons, the driver of the Toyota lost control of the vehicle.
The Toyota veered west off the freeway and into the dirt and grass median that separated eastbound and westbound highways, according to CHP. While traveling downward through the median the van became airborne, struck the Van Ryn Avenue overpass, overturned, and caught fire.
Bystanders reportedly pulled four children from the Toyota, including an infant, and three others who were between six and 14 years old. In addition, a 6-year-old girl was transported to UC Davis Medical Center with major injuries.
Four occupants were pronounced dead at the scene, according to CHP. It is unknown whether drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Anyone with information is advised by CHP to call the Stockton office at (209) 938-4800.
(FOX40.COM) — An elderly person is dead after being found by first responders in a mobile home that was on fire.
Around 5:45 p.m., the Modesto and Stanislaus Consolidated firefighters said they responded to 9-1-1 calls about a residential working structure fire on the 3900 block of Central Avenue in Ceres. Callers reported a mobile home on fire with a person possibly still inside.
Upon arrival, the Modesto Fire Department saw fire coming from a mobile home. Firefighters said they performed a search, found an elderly occupant, and removed the occupant. Paramedic crews provided medical care and transported the occupant to a local hospital, however, the occupant was later pronounced dead.
Officials said the fire was quickly extinguished before the fire could spread to other mobile homes nearby and the cause is under investigation.
CHICAGO (WGN) — An 11-year-old boy was fatally stabbed in Chicago while defending his pregnant mother against her ex-boyfriend, who was released from prison a day before the attack, police said. Crossetti Brand, 37, was charged Friday with first-degree murder in the death of Jayden Perkins, as well as attempted first-degree murder for allegedly stabbing Perkins’ 33-year-old mother.
Brand also faces charges of armed robbery, aggravated domestic battery, unlawful use of a weapon, violating a protection order and three counts of home invasion with a deadly weapon. Investigators said the deadly stabbing happened inside the victims’ home at the Peterson Plaza apartment complex on Wednesday, March 13.
Perkin’s mother was about to leave her apartment to take her two sons to school around 7:45 a.m., but as she opened the door, Brand allegedly forced his way inside and began stabbing her. According to court records, Perkins was trying to protect his mother when he was fatally stabbed in the chest. The boy’s younger brother witnessed the attack, authorities said, but was uninjured.
The woman was transported to an area hospital in critical condition. Officials confirmed Friday she was alert and expected to survive, along with her unborn child.
“This is something that should never had happened,” Chicago Police Department Superintendent Larry Snelling said during a press conference Friday.
Brand had served a 16-year sentence in a 2015 case for home invasion, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, and aggravated domestic battery involving a different victim, Illinois Department of Corrections (IDOC) and court records show. He was released from Stateville Prison on mandatory supervised release in October 2023, the IDOC confirmed.
“At that time he received a memorandum reminding him of the order of protection regarding victim one,” Assistant State’s Attorney Anne McCord Rodgers said.
Perkins’ mother reportedly dated the suspect more than 15 years prior and had an active order of protection against him in place. She registered herself in the IDOC system to receive alerts regarding Brand’s release from prison.
According to the court documents, the suspect allegedly sent the victim a text message threatening her and her family on Jan. 30. He then allegedly went to her home on Feb. 1, two days later, ringing the doorbell multiple times and attempting to pull the handle.
Prosecutors said the victim contacted the parole board, and Brand was taken back into custody, only to be released on parole weeks later on March 12, one day before the deadly stabbing.
According to a request for an emergency order of protection filed on Feb. 21, the victim wrote that Brand “sent me several text messages saying he would kill me and my family. He would wait outside my house and shoot me. I have pics.”

A judge did not grant the request for the emergency order of protection and instead scheduled a hearing on the matter on March 13, but it was already too late. Court records paint a history of domestic violence against the victim by Brand, who violated an order of protection involving the woman three times back in 2008 — a case he received a three-year sentence for, according to the IDOC.
During Brand’s sentencing in that case, he was served with an order of protection that listed the victim and her mother as protected parties, prosecutors said.
“When he was served with this order of protection, he ripped it up in front of a judge in open court,” McCord Rodgers said.
Brand has several other felony and misdemeanor convictions, including a 2009 non-domestic related case involving possession of a stolen motor vehicle, where he was sentenced to four years in prison, and a 2005 battery case, where he served 10 days in county jail, records show.
“This is someone who should not have been on the street,” Snelling said.
According to the bond proffer filed in the deadly stabbing, Brand was captured on surveillance video several times, both near the crime scene and on CTA cameras, leaving after his alleged involvement in the attack.
Several other items were recovered with a red blood-like substance on them, including a knife, clothing, and a stolen cellphone belonging to the victim, prosecutors said. Results of forensic testing on those items is pending.
Perkins remembered for his kindness at vigil
On Friday night, family and friends of the 11-year-old boy killed gathered at the apartment complex where the attack happened. They said they are going to miss Perkins immensely.
The child was in sixth grade at Peirce School of International Studies.
Over 70 classmates, teachers and families also came together at the apartment complex Thursday night for a vigil.
The 11-year-old was remembered for his kindness, and a memorial has filled up the halls of Peirce — where he was known for uplifting his classmates.
“He sees when people need help or when they are feeling down, and he helps them. He comes up to them and… says a joke to try to make them laugh,” friend Mason Hamm recalled.
Perkins loved to dance and perform. He starred in school productions and was the narrator in last year’s Dr. Seuss play. This year he was scheduled to be Nemo in “Finding Nemo.”
Friends said they’re considering rewriting the script so it honors him.
“It’s not going to be the same without him,” Hamm said. “Jayden, we love you.”
Brand is due back in court on April 3. During Friday’s hearing, emotions ran high among family members of Perkins as Brand entered the courtroom. Several people were removed.
“Jayden was a bright light in his community. We grieve alongside his family and community as we reckon with this unthinkable loss. We pray for Jayden’s mother’s recovery. We will never forget Jayden, who was taken from us much too soon. May God rest his soul in eternal peace.” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement on Saturday morning.

One person was killed Sunday morning in a crash involving a motorcycle in northeast Denver.
The crash involved a vehicle and a motorcycle and happened in the 5100 block of North Quebec Street, the Denver Police Department reported on X just before 12:30 p.m.

October 23 patch notes indicate NetherRealm issued a ton of gameplay and performance changes to its $70 game, like improved AI and more balanced combat, but it hid the less desirable details about the premium Halloween Finisher among them. It won’t actually make it to the game’s Premium Store until later this week, publisher Warner Bros. Games said on Twitter, but it seems likely that it’s the same themed Fatality Mortal Kombat leakers revealed in September.
Leaked footage shows that, during the Fatality move, you slam a grimacing jack-o’-lantern over your opponent’s face and wait for bugs to slink out. Your enemy then doubles over and you pop their head off with a powerful kick, observing as it flies through space and slams into a front porch decorated for Halloween. The doorbell rings like you’re trick-or-treating, and blood waterfalls around the cracked pumpkin skull. “FATALITY,” the screen announces in vampire red.

It looks like a fun move, and it’s October-ready, but fans stopped feeling as excited about it when they realized they’d have to pay extra for it.
“Pretty bad new precedent set by the devs charging for Fatalities now, and if people pay for it then it will only get worse,” one Reddit user said. “Next they might start charging $0.10 every time we call out our [support fighter] Kameo.”
“Why the hell did I pay for a [$110] Premium Edition […] yet NR has the cheek to try to force more paid content already?” a Twitter user responded to WB Games. “Greedy business practices before quality.”
NetherRealm apparently hasn’t learned from its 2019 game MK11, which gained notoriety among fans for what Kotaku writer Mike Fahey called its “oppressive” grind, which encouraged players to spend thousands of dollars on in-game currency to avoid suffering through tedious amounts of gameplay to unlock rewards. MK1 is also offering a free Halloween Variant, a purplish, cobwebbed middle school dance, to the Cage Mansion Arena, but it doesn’t take the sting out of giving more money to a game you thought you already paid for.
