MINNEAPOLIS — Police are investigating after a 14-year-old boy was shot and killed in northeast Minneapolis early Friday morning.

Minneapolis police say officers were called to the 2600 block of University Avenue Northeast around 3 a.m., where they found the teenager on the ground outside of an SUV. He was taken to the hospital, where he died three hours later.

Police say he was in an SUV with a few other people when someone shot rounds from another car. The SUV that the boy was in had not been reported stolen, and police do not know if the other one was stolen or not.

“Teenagers, Kia’s and Hundai’s, and guns have become a common recipe for violent crime and tragedy,” said Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara. “The death of a teenager out on the street is outrageous and totally unacceptable.”

No one else was injured in the shooting. Police arrested a woman in her 30s at the scene on an unrelated warrant.

  • Man convicted of murder in 2021 shooting near BART 24th Mission station in San Francisco

Man convicted of murder in 2021 shooting near BART 24th Mission station in San Francisco

    [ad_1]

A San Francisco Superior Court jury has convicted a man of murder for killing someone and injuring another person in a 2021 shooting in the city’s Mission District, prosecutors said.

Keshon Wilson, 23, was convicted of first-degree murder and a premeditated attempted murder. The jury also found that Wilson personally and intentionally discharged a firearm that caused great bodily injury or death, the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office said Wednesday.

Based on testimony and evidence presented at trial, Wilson was working as a power washer at the 24th Street Mission BART Station on the night of March 29, 2021, when he had an argument with a group of people.

Prosecutors said Wilson left the station and drove around the block, then parked his work truck. He then approached the group on foot with a “ghost gun” firearm in hand, intending to conduct a surprise attack against the group.

According to prosecutors, Wilson fired multiple gunshots in the group’s direction after he emerged from behind a bus shelter. He shot nine times, hitting two of the four men in the group, and shattering the glass door of a nearby McDonald’s restaurant.

Due to the shooting, 26-year-old San Mateo resident Isaiah Cardenas died, and another 23-year-old man got injured. Cardenas suffered three gunshot wounds to his back, while the surviving victim suffered four to five gunshot wounds to his torso and shoulder, prosecutors said.

Wilson fled to Las Vegas, but upon his return to San Francisco in May 2021, police arrested him at his home, where a search revealed the murder weapon and other firearm accessories.

“I am very grateful to the jury for their service as well as their careful and fair approach to this case,” said Assistant District Attorney Charly Weissenbach. “No one deserves to be murdered, especially by ambush in the heartless and violent manner it was committed here. The jury’s verdict rejected the defendant’s false self-defense claim, upheld the rule of law, condemned senseless gun violence, and delivered justice for the victims and our community.”

Wilson faces a sentence of 82 years to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for June 3, prosecutors said.

San Mateo police investigating murder-suicide; 2 children found dead

    02:47

Police released the identities Thursday of the two adults and two children found dead Monday in what is confirmed to be a murder-suicide inside a San Mateo home.

San Mateo police said the adults were Anand Henry and Alice Benzinger, and their two twin boys. Both Henry and Benzinger died of gunshot wounds and the investigation shows that Henry shot Benzinger multiple times and then shot himself, police said. The cause of death for the boys was still pending, but police confirmed they did not die from gunfire or show signs of bodily trauma.

It was estimated the killings took place sometime on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 10.

Police also said Thursday there was no history of violence at the home, and the only time officers were called to the home since 2020 was to check on reports of a mountain lion in the yard.

On Monday, police found the four dead in a home on Alameda de las Pulgas shortly after 9:15 a.m. while officers were conducting a welfare check due to a call received by the police department.

Henry and Benzinger were found dead inside a bathroom along with a 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine. The bodies of the two boys were found inside a bedroom.

“Our investigation into the motive for this tragedy continues,” police said in a press statement. “While we can’t undo this horrific incident, we would like to share with our community both domestic violence and mental health resources, because there is help and/or assistance out there, and something like this does not need to happen again.”

Man and woman died of gunshot wounds in San Mateo home where 2 children also found dead

    [ad_1]

Police in San Mateo on Tuesday confirmed that the man and woman who were found dead in a home on Alameda de las Pulgas along with the bodies of two children Monday morning died from gunshot wounds.

Authorities made the grim discovery at the home Monday shortly after 9:15 a.m. while officers were conducting a welfare check due to a call received by the police department. The bodies of the two adults were found along with those of two young boys.

“The male and female were located deceased from gunshot wounds inside a bathroom. A 9mm pistol and a loaded magazine were also found in the bathroom,” police said in an updated press release.

Police also said the two children were found deceased inside a bedroom. Police said the cause of the children’s deaths is still under investigation.

“The children did not have any gunshot wounds. Unfortunately, they were found deceased, so that will be part of the autopsy, to figure out the cause of [the children’s] death,” San Mateo police public information officer Jerami Surratt said at a Tuesday afternoon press conference.

The San Mateo County Crime Lab was called to the scene and assisted officers with evidence collection. The San Mateo County Coroner took custody of the four bodies and is working to identify each person and notify next of kin.

Police said on Monday that the deaths appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no sign of forced entry at the home. Police said that there was no danger to the public as authorities were “confident the person responsible was located within the home.”

The investigation is ongoing as detectives “work to gather evidence, speak to witnesses and family members, and determine a possible motive.”

Surratt noted that police were called to the home a few times in the past, but said he did not know what the calls were about.

He also spoke briefly on the affect the deaths have had on the responding officers and the community at large.

“It’s a very difficult thing for everyone. This is a horrible crime that doesn’t happen often, thankfully,” said Surratt. “It impacts the family, the community, the officers and everyone that deals with this. And I’m sure the public is feeling the tragedy of this event.”

Neighbors were shocked by the grim discovery. Some reported hearing gunshots prior to the arrival of police.

“You hear it’s an entire family and, of course, your mind goes to a place of what tragic event happened,” said Ron Mifsud, who lives nearby.

Family of man fatally shot by Carol Stream police hires Chicago civil rights attorney

    [ad_1]

CAROL STREAM, Ill. — The family of Isaac Goodlow III, who was fatally shot by police at a Carol Stream apartment complex early Saturday morning, has hired Chicago civil rights attorney Andrew Stroth to explore legal options.

Goodlow, 30, was shot and killed in an incident that took place just before 5 a.m. Saturday in the 200 block of East St. Charles Road at Carol Stream’s Villagebrook Apartments when two officers called to a domestic violence incident discharged their firearms. Authorities say the incident remains under investigation.

Stroth and Goodlow’s family are scheduled to hold a press conference at 11 a.m. Monday.

“Thirty-year-old Isaac Goodlow was unarmed and unjustifiably shot early Saturday morning,” Stroth said in a statement.

According to the Carol Stream Police Department, officers responded to reports of domestic violence at the apartment complex just after 4 a.m. Saturday and found a woman injured.

Brian Cluever, acting Carol Stream Chief of Police, did not say specifically what prompted two officers to fire their weapons, but he said the officers encountered a “tense, uncertain, and rapidly evolving situation.”

Goodlow, later identified by the DuPage County Coroner’s Office, was transported to Central DuPage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police say Goodlow was a Chicagoland resident.

“He was very loving,” said Dajanae Barnes, Goodlow’s niece. “All his nieces and nephews loved him. He was like our favorite uncle. Everybody loved him, our little brothers. He raised us. We all lived in the same house.”

The Carol Stream Police Department confirmed that all officers’ body cameras were activated during the incident.

In accordance with the department’s policy, the officers involved have been placed on paid leave while the state’s attorney’s office and the Public Integrity Unit of the DuPage Metropolitan Emergency Response and Investigations Team (MERIT) — made up of several DuPage County law enforcement agencies — reviews the body-camera footage and conducts an investigation.

  • A skeleton and a smoking gun: Why a newly elected deputy union board member’s tattoo is sparking concern

A skeleton and a smoking gun: Why a newly elected deputy union board member’s tattoo is sparking concern

    [ad_1]

A union representing Los Angeles County sheriff deputies recently elected to its board of directors a veteran lawman who has a controversial tattoo and was involved in two fatal shootings that cost the county $4 million in legal payouts, sparking concern among oversight officials and justice advocates.

Incoming Assn. of Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs board member Jason Zabala previously described his tattoo under oath, saying it depicted a skeleton in a cowboy hat with a smoking rifle and the number 140. He called the stark combination of imagery a “station tattoo,” but others described it as the symbol of a deputy gang known as the Regulators.

Zabala has previously denied being part of the group, saying that the number simply meant he was the 140th person to get that same design, and describing the tattoo as a proud mark of camaraderie among fellow deputies. This week he did not respond to a request for comment.

Union president Richard Pippin defended Zabala in an emailed statement Thursday, calling him a “family oriented guy with a big heart” who has dedicated his life to helping others.

Still, advocates — such as James Nelson, campaign and program manager for the community coalition Dignity and Power Now — worried Zabala’s election would not bode well for the department’s efforts to rein in deputy gangs and gang tattoos.

“It’s a bad sign,” Nelson said. “It isn’t the sheriff that runs the department — it’s the unions.”

For decades, the Sheriff’s Department has been plagued by gangs of deputies running roughshod over certain stations and floors of the jail. The groups are known by monikers such as the Executioners, the Vikings and the Regulators, and their members often bear the same sequentially numbered tattoos.

During his swearing-in ceremony nearly a year ago, Sheriff Robert Luna spoke of the need to “eliminate deputy gangs” from the department. Though he created a new office to do that, the department has not yet settled on a policy banning gangs or gang tattoos.

One hurdle to clear before implementing any sweeping new policy is the back-and-forth of the bargaining process with labor leaders, including ALADS.

“We’ve been hearing that the reason we can’t move forward with passing an anti-gang policy — which is the first step in making good on the pledge to get rid of them — is because the sheriff has to negotiate with ALADS,” said Sean Kennedy, who chairs the Civilian Oversight Commission.

“Those sessions are taking much longer than we anticipated,” Kennedy said. “And then, when we hear that he’ll be meeting and conferring with an organization with a tattooed Regulator on the board of directors, it makes everyone believe that we’re engaged in a futile process.”

Pippin disputed that, saying the election outcome “will not change” the organization’s mission and values when it comes to the bargaining process.

“We remain committed to working with the department and the county to achieve the best possible outcomes, not only for our members, but also for members of the communities they serve,” he said.

He did not address the nature or significance of Zabala’s tattoo.

County records show Zabala first started working for the Sheriff’s Department in 2002. Nine years later, he was involved in an on-duty crash that left a woman with spinal injuries. The case settled for $80,000 before trial, according to the news site Knock LA.

Then in 2013, Zabala and his partner stopped a man riding a bicycle and ended up shooting him as he lay face down in his backyard. Prosecutors said the man — Terry Laffitte — had been resisting, so they deemed the shooting lawful. After Laffitte’s family filed suit, the county settled the case for $1.5 million.

The year after that, Zabala was involved in the killing of Johnny Martinez, a 28-year-old man with schizophrenia who was shot 36 times by deputies outside his Vermont Knolls home. Prosecutors also deemed that shooting justified, though in 2018 a civil lawsuit on behalf of the Martinez family ended with a hefty $2.5 million settlement.

It was the 2013 shooting that brought Zabala’s ink to the fore. In connection with the civil lawsuit, Zabala was deposed three times in 2015 and 2016 and asked to describe his tattoo.

Over the course of those depositions he offered additional details about the ink, including that in addition to a smoking gun, the skeleton is holding a “memorial stone” with “CEN” — for Century Station — written on it, along with the Roman numerals XXI. According to Kennedy, those are all key elements of a Regulators’ tattoo.

“The tombstone in the background with the letters for Century Station is some of the main iconography for the Regulators,” he told The Times.

In Zabala’s tattoo, there are also flames along the bottom of the tattoo along with the words “Beati Pacifici,” which he said under oath translates to “Blessed are the Peacemakers.” The entire tattoo is 5 to 6 inches high, on the lower part of his left leg.

At the time, Zabala said in depositions that the Old West style of his tattoo honored the Sheriff’s Department’s founding in 1850 and that skeletons are “an icon of the peace officer.” A Loyola Marymount University report later described Zabala’s ink as “Regulators tattoo #140.”

The district attorney’s office later investigated whether Zabala committed perjury when he described the significance of the number 140 on his tattoo.

Ultimately prosecutors declined to pursue the case, saying it wasn’t clear that Zabala committed perjury. Even if he did lie about his tattoo, they said, it would not have made a difference in the outcome of the case.

“It is unlikely that a false statement about one aspect of one tattoo, among several, would probably influence the outcome of the wrongful death lawsuit,” prosecutors wrote.

When lawyers for the county agreed to settle the lawsuit in 2017, records show they told a Sheriff’s Department investigator that the allegation of perjury was a factor in their decision.

In this year’s union election, Zabala was one of eight candidates for four open seats. He will be sworn in to the seven-member board at Friday morning’s meeting, along with Julian Stern, John Perez and Tony Meraz.

AUSTIN (CBSNewsTexas.com) – The Austin Police Department is investigating a hostage situation that happened overnight, leaving one officer and two victims dead, with a second officer in stable condition at a local hospital. The suspect is deceased.

During a press briefing Saturday morning, Interim Chief of Police Robin Henderson shared details on the developing story.

“This has been a very tragic day,” she said. “A very tragic incident for all involved.”

First responders received a 911 call at 2:49 a.m. coming from 9308 Bernoulli Drive.

“A caller was screaming for help,” Henderson shared. “The caller provided more details and said someone was stabbing her.”

Officers arrived at the scene at 2:57 a.m., where they discovered there were two other people injured inside the home with the suspect. Before the officers got there, though, a third victim escaped and was taken to a local hospital.

At 3:00 a.m. officers announced and identified themselves before forcing their way into the home. That’s when the suspect started shooting at them. The officers backed out without returning fire. At 3:06 a.m., SWAT was called out to the scene—they arrived another hour later at 4:11.

The SWAT officers also forced their way into the home, at which point the suspect and officers exchanged gunfire.

At 4:15, it was communicated over radio that two officers had been shot. They were taken to a local hospital, but one of the SWAT officers died from his injuries, according to Mayor Kirk Watson’s chief of staff.

Interim Police Chief Robin Henderson identified the fallen officer as SPO Jorge Pastore.

Pastore joined APD with the 141st Cadet Class on June 24, 2019, and was commissioned as an officer on Jan. 31, 2020. He was an active member of the Honor Guard, SWAT Gold Team, CAST and SRT and patrolled in the Henry and George sectors.

The second officer is in stable condition.

The two victims inside the home were pronounced dead at the scene, as was the suspect.

Mayor Watson responded to the tragedy on X saying, “My heart and the hearts of Austinites are broken this morning. This is a horrible moment for our city and those who protect us.”

As did the City of Austin.

Gov. Abbott also issued a statement, saying in part, “Hearts across Texas are grieving with the family and loved ones of the Austin Police Officer who was tragically killed in the line of duty early this morning, as well as another who faces a long journey to recovery.”

A number of police departments offered their condolences, as well, including Richland Hills Police Department, Grand Prairie Police Department and Grapevine Police Department.

We send our thoughts, prayers and condolences to our brothers and sisters at the Austin Police Department who mourn the…
