Statesville Regional Airport said it has reopened after clearing debris created by the plane crash that killed seven people last week, including NASCAR star Greg Biffle and his family.

Airport officials combined their reopening announcement with an acknowledgment of the impact the crash has had on the community and the NASCAR industry.

“The City of Statesville NC and Statesville Regional Airport extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives in Thursday’s crash. We remain mindful of this loss as our community continues to grieve,” the airport wrote in a Dec. 21 Facebook post.

“Thank you to our emergency responders, partner agencies, and the community for their patience and cooperation.”

Charlotte is a NASCAR hub and the airport serves “several NASCAR teams,” according to its website. It is about a 45-mile drive north from uptown Charlotte.

About the Greg Biffle plane crash

The plane crash happened around 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, and resulted in the Cessna Citation C550 bursting into flames that spread to the surrounding turf, videos show.

Investigators report the plane was flying low enough prior to the crash to hit trees, airport lighting and a perimeter fence.

The crash quickly gained international attention when it was revealed that Biffle – “one of NASCAR’s 75 greatest drivers” – was among the victims. Others on board included Biffle’s wife Cristina Grossu, their 5-year-old son, Ryder, and Greg’s teenage daughter, Emma, father and son Dennis and Jack Dutton, and Craig Wadsworth, according to a joint statement from the victims’ families.

Investigators have yet to determine who was piloting the aircraft at the time of the crash, due to multiple people on board having pilot’s licenses. The investigation is continuing.

  • Father and son were racing at nearly 100 mph just before double-fatal Lakewood crash, police say

The father and son accused of causing a double-fatal crash in Lakewood while street-racing earlier this month were driving nearly 100 mph before the collision and are believed to have been drinking that night, according to an arrest affidavit.

Gregory Mark Giles, 65, and Bryce Anneaus Giles, 26, turned themselves in to Lakewood police Monday and were arrested on suspicion of vehicular homicide, vehicular assault, engaging in a speed contest and reckless driving.

The multi-vehicle crash happened at 9:08 p.m. Nov. 13 at South Kipling Parkway and West Mississippi Avenue. When Lakewood police arrived, they found three vehicles had been involved in the collision — a 2004 Toyota 4Runner, a 2014 Ford Expedition and a 2015 Ford Explorer, the arrest affidavit said.

A witness told police they saw the 4Runner turn left in front of the speeding Explorer, from southbound Kipling onto eastbound Mississippi, while the light was green, and saw the vehicles’ impact at a high rate of speed.

The driver and passenger of the 4Runner — Dalton Smith, 28, and Demi Iglesias, 26 — were taken to CommonSpirit St. Anthony Hospital, where they later died from their injuries, according to Lakewood police.

Gregory Giles was driving the Explorer with his other son, Brayden, in the vehicle while Bryce Giles was driving the Expedition, according to the affidavit.

Brayden Giles told police they were on their way to go bowling and were driving the speed limit. However, Gregory Giles was seen by traffic cameras and witnesses racing the Explorer, repeatedly driving side by side and exceeding the 45 mph speed limit.

Camera footage showed both the Expedition and Explorer were traveling “faster than normal traffic flow,” according to the affidavit. Police analyzed both vehicles’ data recorders and found the Expedition and Explorer were travelling 99.4 mph and 93 mph, respectively, five seconds before their airbags deployed, according to the affidavit.

In addition, while agents were at the scene of the crash, they reported finding two empty alcohol “shooters,” or 50ml bottles. One of the bottles was 99 Brand Black Cherry and the other was 99 Brand Apples, both labeled as 99 proof alcohol.

The bottles were located in plain view in the driver’s side footwell of the Ford Explorer that Gregory Giles was driving, according to the affidavit.

When police asked Brayden Giles if he had seen his father drink any alcohol prior to the crash, Brayden Giles said that he and his father had each drunk one beer, according to the arrest affidavit.

Brayden Giles told police his brother Bryce had also drunk beer before leaving. When asked how much alcohol Bryce had consumed, Giles said, “I think he had a lot,” according to the affidavit.

  • Man convicted of vehicular homicide after driving nearly 100 mph before fatal Aurora crash

CENTENNIAL, Colo. — Arapahoe County jurors convicted a 31-year-old man of vehicular homicide and reckless driving for a 2024 Aurora crash that killed a 71-year-old woman and severely injured her husband, the district attorney for the 18th Judicial District announced Tuesday.

Taylor Marcus Douglas is facing a maximum six years in prison when he is sentenced on January 16.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. on April 15, 2024, at the intersection of S. Chambers Road and E. Center Avenue. Investigators found, using data from Douglas’ vehicle, that he was driving nearly 100 mph in a 40 mph zone before t boning the couple’s SUV as they left a dialysis center.

Douglas, driving a Nissan Altima, initially told police he was going only 55 mph and was unable to stop in time. However, witnesses reported the Altima was weaving through traffic moments before impact.

“This tragedy was entirely preventable,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Brian Eckhardt said in a press release. “Mr. Douglas chose to drive at nearly 100 miles per hour on a busy Aurora roadway, and that reckless decision cost an innocent woman her life and left her husband with devastating injuries. Our community deserves accountability, and this verdict reflects the jury’s careful consideration of the evidence and the harm caused.”

Padden also voiced support for harsher penalties in vehicular homicide cases.

“Every victim and every grieving family deserves a justice system that treats vehicular homicide cases with the gravity it warrants,” Padden said in the release. “My office continues to have productive conversations with legislators to pursue reforms that hold offenders fully accountable for these preventable tragedies.”

  • Speeding Tesla driver claimed no memory of fatal St. Paul crash, charges say

A Tesla driver who authorities said was speeding when he caused a fatal crash in St. Paul, Minnesota, said he had no memory of the collision afterward, according to court documents.

Musab Kosar, a 22-year-old man from Fridley, Minnesota, was charged with one count of criminal vehicular homicide in Ramsey County on Thursday.

A state trooper first saw the speeding Tesla on the ramp from Pascal Street to eastbound Interstate 94 around 2 a.m. Wednesday, a criminal complaint states. Authorities allege the driver was going nearly 30 mph over the speed limit at the time, and subsequently reached speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The trooper followed the Tesla sans lights or sirens and saw the driver turn the vehicle’s lights off while exiting at Dale Street. At the top of the ramp, the trooper found a crash between the Tesla and a Toyota RAV4.

The RAV4’s driver, 31-year-old Benjamin Villano, was killed in the crash. When the trooper checked on the Tesla, he found Kosar and a passenger “covered in blood and in significant pain, and both claimed no memory of the crash,” the complaint states. Both were taken to a hospital, where again Kosar said he did not recall the collision.

The passenger, identified by police as a 19-year-old woman, said she had previously asked Kosar to stop speeding, “but she didn’t believe he was speeding that evening,” the complaint states.

If convicted, Kosar faces a maximum prison sentence of 10 years.

The crash happened on Saturday at about 2:35 p.m. on Foxworthy Avenue west of Jarvis Avenue in the southern part of the city’s Willow Glen neighborhood north of Hillsdale Avenue. The San Jose Police Department said in a press release Monday that a man driving a white 2018 GMC Denali was headed east on Foxworthy, a two-lane road divided by a double yellow line, and was approaching Jarvis when he attempted to pass a green 2018 Subaru Forrester on the right.

  • St. Cloud police officer dies nearly a week after off-duty crash in Apple Valley

A member of the St. Cloud, Minnesota, police department has died following a crash on Monday night.

Police Chief Jeff Oxton says Officer Ryan Ebert died Saturday morning at Hennepin County Medical Center from his injuries, which were determined by medical staff earlier this week to not be survivable.

Ebert, who the Minnesota State Patrol listed as being 44 years old, was an 18-year veteran of the department, said Oxton, who added Ebert served as an investigator and a patrol officer.

The crash happened shortly before 10 p.m. on northbound Highway 77 near Interstate 35E in Apple Valley. According to the state patrol, Ebert was driving a 2024 Dodge Ram 1500 on the highway when his truck hit a 2018 Transit Bus and a cable barrier.

The bus driver, a 65-year-old man identified by the state patrol as Phillip Alan Wright of Apple Valley, was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

An incident report for the crash says there was alcohol in Ebert’s system. Oxton said in a news release on Friday that blood samples taken by medical personnel at the hospital “indicate that he had a very small or trace amount of alcohol in his system, significantly below that which would ever lead to a person being considered impaired or driving under the influence.”

Oxton said Saturday that Ebert’s organs will be donated.
