Shopping for jeans can involve a lot of trial and error, especially when you’re experimenting with a new silhouette. If you’ve been tempted to try the polarizing yet inescapable trend of barrel leg jeans, you’re not alone. As a shopping editor, I’ve been obsessively seeking the perfect pair — one that boasts a subtle, flattering shape; feels fresh, but classic enough to have a smidge of longevity. As a Madewell denim fan (the brand’s Emmett Patch-Pocket Wide-Leg Jeans are my favorite), I was thrilled to see that the label released its own interpretation of a barrel leg cut. Madewell’s Darted Barrel Leg Jeans ($148) are the pair I landed on and have been wearing non-stop.

What I Love About Madewell’s Darted Barrel Leg Jeans

These jeans have a fitted waist, bow out around the middle of the leg, and have a tapered ankle. While there’s enough mid-leg volume to capture the barrel leg look, it isn’t as exaggerated as Free People’s version, or a lot of others on the market. To help emphasize the curved leg shape, this pair has darts at the knees to create a sort of optical illusion, instead of tacking on more volume. The result is subtle and surprisingly flattering.

These jeans don’t have any stretch, but they’re ridiculously comfortable. They sit low at the waist and sort of dangle — the legs are structured but not stiff. I love that they feel like a baggy pair of jeans but have enough structure to still look polished. They also have a cropped ankle, so they don’t overwhelm my frame, and look great with everything from ballet flats to sneakers.
What’s Worth Noting About Madewell’s Darted Barrel Leg Jeans

These jeans are definitely oversize, so finding the right size can be tricky. I would suggest going one or two sizes down from your normal size. I’m usually a size 28 in Madewell jeans and am wearing a size 27, but I think I could have gotten away with a size 26 since they sit low on the waist. They also have a button fly instead of a zip fly, which is a bit of a pain when putting them on and taking them off.

When I first saw Kylie Jenner modeling her Khy Smooth Stretch Capri Catsuit ($78) on Instagram, I was struck by the simplicity of the look. We’ve seen the 27-year-old entrepreneur and beauty mogul in everything from intricate corsets to unfathomable cutouts, so this pared back moment really stopped me in my tracks. Jenner was in Italy, rocking the backless number to dinner with nothing but Maison Margiela leather flats, gold jewelry, and an oversize woven tote.

The outfit honestly stuck with me for a while. Like many Skims products I’ve tried, the Khy Smooth Stretch Capri Catsuit fits like a second skin. It’s extremely comfortable, especially since you can adjust it to your liking with the halter neck tie at the back. The piece is constructed from 85 percent nylon and 15 percent spandex, making it flexible and smooth, but still opaque and not at all sheer like a pair of tights. (In other words, I couldn’t make out every little butt dimple or body curve through the fabric.) I felt sexy when I put it on, but still relatively covered up. I didn’t look naked; rather, surprisingly elegant and graceful — like a ballerina.

As previously mentioned, I took a liking to Jenner’s styling with a simple pair of black flats — mine being a patent iteration with a bow at the toe from Cider — but I felt most comfortable when I added my oversize Frame denim jacket and pushed up the sleeves for an effortless streetwear touch. I accessorized with my rectangular Otra Eyewear frames and a pop of yellow, courtesy of my Fendi croissant shoulder bag sourced from Vivrelle. As a bonus, I even wore the catsuit on Halloween with a pair of black leather knee-high boots, which is a popular way to style the Khy Smooth Stretch Capri Catsuit, according to social media.

At the end of the day, the catsuit is a very tight article of clothing that bares skin and is designed to show off the body, so it’s natural to feel weary about slipping into it — especially without any extra layers. As I wore it, I also felt like the crotch area “dropped” a bit over time, rather than staying perfectly taut and in place. This tends to bother me when it comes to wearing one-pieces, although others may not even notice a little natural slippage.

Note the black version of the Khy catsuit isn’t currently stocked in all sizes. And if you’re looking for something like this in a full-length leg, I would browse through the alternative options below, because the inseam is cropped at only 23 inches.

Before my recent trip to Iceland, I had to complete one very important task: find a warm jacket comfortable enough for braving the country’s often-freezing temperatures. I knew I’d be spending a decent amount of time outdoors in the thick of Reykavik’s otherworldly (and notoriously unpredictable) climate, which meant that I’d require an all-weather coat that could handle the unexpected: heavy water exposure underneath waterfalls, wind spells along the country’s black sand beaches, and even late-night temperature drops while chasing the Northern Lights.

After searching through countless reviews online and sourcing recommendations from friends, I landed (unsurprisingly) on Orolay as the coat brand to entrust with my purchase. The label is known for creating some of the warmest and most durable outerwear on the market, with its famous Thickened Down Jacket amassing over 28,000 ratings on Amazon alone. I decided to try out that style’s longer counterpart, the Orolay Thickened Long Down Jacket ($105, originally $150), and can honestly say that in all my years of shopping, I’ve never found a warmer coat — which is a real testimony, considering I’m known to don multiple layers the moment it drops below 60 degrees.

From its packable design (perfect for stuffing into personal carry-ons) to its dopamine-inducing color, I break down what makes this Amazon coat such a worthwhile investment — whether you’re wearing it near the Arctic Circle or just in your own backyard. What I Like About This Orolay Coat

These days, I’m focused more on limiting unnecessary splurges and investing in multifunctional pieces that can work for a variety of occasions and weather conditions. This Orolay jacket ticks all of my boxes and then some; it’s crafted from a polyester material that’s windproof and waterproof, with an extra-large, adjustable hood that helps to keep my face protected in harsher temperatures.

The thickened jacket is filled with 90 percent duck down and 10 percent duck feather, with an insulated design that — per Orolay’s website — is suitable for temperatures as low as negative 10 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperatures on my Iceland trip ranged from 25 degrees Fahrenheit to about 45 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the time of day, and I hardly noticed any temp changes or intense winds because of the comfortability provided by this coat.

It’s also fitted with unique design flourishes that make it incredibly practical for all-day wear. The coat is completely packable, so it’s easy to fold down and squeeze into suitcases or duffel bags without taking up a ton of extra space — despite its thickened down design. The side zipper pockets are remarkably deep and lined with a plush material for extra warmth. I was able to fit everything from a small travel water bottle to a packable umbrella into the pockets, often removing the need for a purse entirely. I also appreciate the style’s two-way zipper and button accents, which made it easy to take the jacket on and off whenever going indoors to my hotel or a restaurant.

As a fashion girlie through and through, I’m also obsessed with the sunny yellow color of this jacket. The shade is a bit outside of my comfort zone, considering I usually lean heavy into neutrals and more understated tones. But winter can be notoriously gloomy, which is why I decided to opt for something brighter and more mood-boosting. Even if the pastel yellow shade isn’t your taste, the waterproof coat is also available in three other colors, including black and white colorways (which I plan to purchase, too).

What’s Worth Noting

My one and only qualm with this long jacket is its pockets, which — despite being deep and offering plenty of carrying space — are situated slightly higher on the coat than other styles, thus creating a somewhat awkward fit when it comes to hand placement. This can be attributed to the depth of the pockets; because they boast a deeper interior that extends farther down, it makes sense to have them situated above the hips as opposed to being front and center on the waistline. I think the pockets are designed more for functionality and are great for holding larger items in a protected (read: zippered) space, especially with products like a smartphone, passport holder, tissues, or even a packable umbrella. But if you’re looking for an option that you can comfortably place your hands into whenever they need respite from outside temperatures, I’d recommend shopping for another winter coat.

If you’re looking for a practical, stylish, and long-lasting jacket that you can trust will be a wardrobe staple for years to come, you can’t go wrong with this Orolay jacket. When I pulled out my Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show getting-ready outfit from the shopping bag delivered to my doorstep, I was stoked. To be honest, I’d always wondered what it felt like to be one of the Angels getting her makeup done backstage in the brand’s signature Satin Short Piped Robe ($60). Mine even came with the official VS merch emblem emblazoned in crystals on the back. Both the crystals and the matching baseball cap (which is sadly now sold out from the “Shop the Show” drop) made up for the fact that I had to do my own makeup before trekking it to Brooklyn’s Duggal Greenhouse for the return of the legendary VS runway.

Still, it was the outfit I slipped on after wearing the pink robe, the one I would ultimately wear to the show, that made me the most nervous: the Very Sexy Rose Lace Balconette Catsuit ($130). It was far more daring than the loungewear I had been sporting before, and I nearly put my foot in my mouth when I saw just how see-through the material actually was.

As it would turn out, model and former First Lady of France Carla Bruni wore the very same design on the runway as I looked on from my seat in the audience, admiring her confidence. Suddenly, I didn’t feel so eager to cover up in my oversize denim jacket anymore. In fact, seeing what my fellow showgoers were wearing also made me feel more liberated in my lingerie as we all watched a VS Fashion Show that was more body inclusive than ever before. Don’t get me wrong: the brand still has a long way to go, in my opinion — viewers all over the world expressed that same sentiment after the spectacle wrapped — but getting to wear lingerie that’s typically reserved for Angels made the runway fashion feel more accessible.

As the wing-less spectator I am, I felt it appropriate to layer with an oversize denim jacket from Frame and opted for simple black pumps. I kept on my hat to add a sporty twist. Underneath, I was rocking the VS Shine Patch Lightly Lined Wireless Bra ($45) and VS Logo Cotton Shine Patch Hiphugger Panty ($15), a bra and underwear set I highly recommend for anyone who who prefers just a touch of glamour but favors comfort above all else. The wireless bra felt so smooth and lightweight, whereas the panties provided just enough coverage underneath the stocking-like bodysuit, without adding bulk.

As time went on, I grew to appreciate the catsuit more and more — and not just because I was inspired by Bruni’s confidence. It really does have a stretchy feel to it so that it fits like a second skin. I also appreciate design details such as the illusion front panty panel and vertical front seams, which add undeniable sex appeal but sophistication all the same. The back zipper is also easy to maneuver without any help; and from a style perspective, it really does look good with a pair of heels, regardless of how many layers you add up top.

My only gripe is that the sweetheart neckline is very low cut and the chest area is wide open, so if you want to layer a bra beneath the built-in cups, it will definitely be visible and may not align exactly how you pictured it. My advice is to try it with a few different bra and panty sets underneath until you find the perfect match for your shape.

Of course, just like with a pair of tights, you’ll want to pull up this bodysuit carefully because the lace embroidery is definitely delicate.

Brandon Maxwell Wants to Reclaim Americana With His Walmart Free Assembly Collection

Dressing everyone from Lady Gaga to Kerry Washington, Brandon Maxwell is a name synonymous with luxury celebrity fashion. Met Gala red carpets, runway shows, state dinners, and daytime talk shows — his designs have graced the most iconic carpets and venues, and now everyone can have a piece of Maxwell’s midas design touch. Since 2021, Maxwell has been applying his high-fashion flair to Walmart as creative director for Walmart’s Free Assembly and Scoop brands, designing elegant yet accessible clothing for everyday wear. “My job as creative director for Scoop and Free Assembly allows me to combine all of my favorite creative endeavors, and I feel incredibly grateful to be making this work for our customers,” Maxwell tells PS.

For his latest Free Assembly Fall 2024 collection, Maxwell embraces the essence of modern Americana with high-waisted jeans, quilted jackets, ruffled blouses, and a color palette that includes olive, navy, mustard, and, of course, red, white, and blue. The collection, available in sizes XS-XXXL / 0-20, features a range of chic wardrobe essentials, from denim midi dresses and chevron knit cardigans to classic staples like white tees and trench coats.

“Free Assembly is all about individuality, and the variety of products allows you to freely assemble a look that represents who you want to be on any given day,” says Maxwell. This spirit of freedom and diversity is reflected in the star-studded campaign, which features Danielle Brooks, Jeremy Pope, Lana Condor, and Max Greenfield. “They have strong individual personalities and styles with a point of view, and I think they perfectly represent what the brand is about,” Maxwell shares about the campaign stars. “Beyond that, they were just incredibly kind and fun to work with.” Each model speaks to this theme of freedom with the message: “I’m free to open up, I’m free to go with the flow, I’m free to show my stripes.”

The self-taught designer has envisioned this collaboration with Walmart “for many, many years.” He explains, “I always wanted to work with Walmart because I have always believed that everyone should have access to fashion that helps them feel their best, no matter the price. For years, I would tell anyone who would listen how much I wanted to collaborate with Walmart, so it is quite literally a dream come true to be doing what I am doing now, and I am thrilled with the experience thus far.”

He adds, “Building these Walmart brands together with the talented, best-in-class design teams I work with every day has been such a joy. Putting my years of experience into creating images, campaigns, and fashion experiences has been a big highlight for me.”

The designer’s runway shows are a staple of the New York Fashion Week schedule (his Fall 2023 show on Valentine’s Day featured individualized boxes of chocolate for guests) — but how does he unwind after? Maxwell says spending time at home reading the newspaper with his dog on his lap and setting a beautiful table for dinner are “big hallmarks of a perfect weekend.” Sure fans of both his eponymous line and Walmart collaboration would agree.

I Tried the Kacey Musgraves x Reformation Bunny Dress Everybody Wants

I won’t lie to you, the Kacey Musgraves x Reformation collection does not align with my typical aesthetic. But the 36-year-old singer, who is currently on tour promoting “Deeper Well” — which was just nominated for CMA’s album of the year — wears it well. The 17-piece capsule collection aims to showcase Musgraves’s personal style and music evolution. It has an English countryside feeling, composed of rich plaids, delicate lace, Victorian bows, equestrian boots, and vintage denim corsets. In a word, it’s romantic — which is not how you’d describe even a small chunk of my wardrobe.

While I love avant-garde shapes and bold colors, and would even describe my fashion sensibility as ever-changing, I had yet to dabble in pouf sleeves and doily trims until I met the Bunny Dress ($248). Since the collaboration was dropped in stores and online on Sept. 16, this dress has quickly become one of the most popular silhouettes, largely thanks to Musgraves’s appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers.” The Bunny was the first item she wore from the line she helped design, teamed with a pair of simple black heeled mules.

I had yet to dabble in pouf sleeves and doily trims until I met the Bunny Dress.

“I got to curate every single detail of this whole line,” she told Meyers. “There’s denim, there’s headscarves, there’s boots, dresses — it’s very romantic and I’m really proud of it.” She continued, “It wasn’t something I just slapped my name on. I really wanted to bring the ‘Deeper Well’ aesthetic into a different dimension.” Musgraves went on to reveal that she worked with Reformation for a full year on production, and then shot the campaign in the Cotswolds in England, with her little sister Kelly Christine Sutton behind the camera.

“I keep saying this is the perfect line for you to just frolic around in,” Musgraves said. And while I’ve never bought a dress that made me think of frolicking in the meadow (what meadow?), Musgraves’s on-screen look was so appealing, I knew I wanted to put my personal touch on it and try to make it my own. What happened when I actually got my hands on the Bunny mini and tried it on surprised me even more. Not only did I feel comfortable enough to embrace my girlier, dare I say demure-leaning, side, I also accessorized with frilly socks and Mary-Janes, a nod to Musgraves’s iconic campaign.

What I Like About the Kacey Musgraves Reformation Bunny Dress

The Kacey Musgraves x Reformation collection comes with a signature tag that suggests exclusivity, which is especially appealing for fans. Like most of Reformation’s clothing, the Bunny Dress feels well-made and isn’t too flimsy or thin. It comes lined and the scoop-neck is comfortable. Neither the elastic at the sleeves or the lace trim felt itchy against my skin during wear. But I think I discovered my favorite element of this dress before I even left the house: It’s actually very versatile.

We saw Musgraves wear it with mules on the aforementioned talk show; I liked how it looked in the mirror with knee-high boots, my Steve Madden loafers, and the cranberry Mary-Janes and socks combination that Musgraves and I both successfully pulled off; and podcast host and author Tinx even wore it with the Franklin Boots that are part of the collection. Finally, the dress definitely fits true to size. I’m wearing a 0, which is my typical size, and it fit like a glove.

What to Consider Before Buying the Kacey Musgraves Reformation Bunny Dress

If you love a dress that’s machine washable, unfortunately, the Bunny is dry clean only to preserve all the delicate details. However, in my opinion, this is a year-round investment piece that works with tights and boots in the winter and bare legs and flats in the summer, so I think it’s worth the trip to the cleaners. Price-wise, this dress does err on the expensive side when it comes to a minidress, but, again, it can be dressed up or down and works for many different occasions. If you’re considered petite like me (I’m 5’1″), I would recommend trying out the shorter iteration, but I actually felt satisfied with the length of the regular size, which suggests a petite cut might have been too short for my liking.

Nordstrom’s Latest Fashion Collab Spotlights Black Culture

While fashion is far from lacking in the area of collaborations, Harlem’s Fashion Row just created a new standard through its partnership with Nordstrom. The company, which champions diversity by bridging the gap between brands and Black designers, has worked with everyone from Nike and LeBron James to Banana Republic. Partnering with a retail behemoth like Nordstrom, however, hits differently. In fact, HFR founder & CEO Brandice Daniel calls it “a celebration of Black consumers’ cultural and economic power.” Daniel has dedicated her career to amplifying Black voices in fashion, so it was only fitting that she highlighted three monumental Black-owned brands with this Nordstrom collaboration: House of Aama, Harbison, and Megan Renee.

The Nordstrom by Harlem’s Fashion Row collab arrives just in time for the summer-to-fall transition and features pieces that speak to the longstanding impact of Black culture in fashion. House of Aama’s signature feminine aesthetic is elevated by unique tailoring inspired by African Diaspora Dandy culture. Highlights include jewelry adorned with etching-type motifs you would normally see in antiquity pottery. Meanwhile, Harbison’s designs serve as an ode to his mother, who he says navigated society with unmatched poise as a working-class, utilitarian woman. He was also inspired by Simon Maris’s “Portrait of a Young Black Woman” (1890), where the woman’s eyes reflect innocence and curiosity, communicated in the abstract color-blocking and inviting florals of his designs.

While House of Aama and Harbison leaned into the visceral power of our culture, Megan Renee stuck to the undeniable elan of being a woman. The brand’s eponymous founder Megan Smith is all about celebrating bold, strong womanhood, and her collection exudes just that. Wearable staples with exaggerated shapes and innovative proportions like silky button-ups, faux leather tiered skirts, and the quintessential suit all depict the image of the modern-day phenomenal woman Maya Angelou described.

Smith’s choice to collaborate with HFR and Nordstrom was a no-brainer, given she showcased her designs at the agency’s annual Fashion Show and Style Awards in 2023. “Retail placement has been at the forefront of initiatives for my brand, and I knew this opportunity would open so many doors,” she says. “Working with Harlem’s Fashion Row is always seamless, and since connecting and working together, I’ve started to feel like they are family now.”

I built my brand around my love of strong suits and blazers and I feel like the piece really captures not only who I am but the woman I am dressing.

When the time came to design the collection, Renee found inspiration from an unlikely source: a quote that motivated her to keep going when she found herself at a crossroads and uncertain about the brand’s future. “I was at a point with my brand where I wasn’t sure what direction I wanted to take but I knew I still had more I needed to say to the world,” she says. “I came across this quote by Erin Hanson, ‘What if I fall, but oh my darling what if you fly?’ and that became my inspiration. Once I heard that, it made me think of birds flying so the feathers became the direction for the jewelry and print. I wanted the collection to feel very aspirational and forward. It really helped me envision where the Megan Renee brand should be headed.”

As for her favorite piece in the collection, Renee immediately names the structured blazer and wide-leg pantsuit. “I built my brand around my love of strong suits and blazers and I feel like the piece really captures not only who I am but the woman I am dressing,” she says. “It’s bold, strong, but still feminine. I played with the fit and proportions that really speak to a woman’s body and it feels very fresh and chic.”

Megan Renee’s full collection is now available to shop, along with pieces from House of Aama and Harbison. With an impressive size range of XXS to 2XL — sizes 00 to 18 for women and S to 2XL for men — and prices as low as $45, there’s truly something for everyone.
