  • Falcons fire only Black head coach/GM duo in the NFL following 8-9 season

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot have been fired. Morris, after two seasons at the helm, and Fontenot, following six years as one of the National Football League’s few Black GMs.

The Atlanta Falcons were the only NFL franchise with a Black head coach and a Black general manager. That is no more.

Morris, his staff, and the Falcons defeated the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, bringing the overall record to 8-9 for a consecutive season. The two eight-win seasons were more than any of the three seasons of the former head coach and current Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith. Under Smith, the Falcons went 7-10 for three consecutive seasons, missing the playoffs in each.

The Falcons’ current streak of missing the postseason is now eight years long. Under Fontenot, the Falcons drafted talented players like Bijan Robinson, Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and rookies Xavier Watts, Jalon Walker, and James Pearce Jr., but consistently missed the playoffs. Fontenot began his tenure in Atlanta in 2021, holding a six-year contract. Morris signed a five-year contract before the 2024 season.

Fontenot is owed for one more year, while Morris has three years remaining on his deal that he will have to be paid for. Morris is owed $12 million, according to a source familiar with the deal.

There was a drastic improvement from Morris’s first season to the 2025 season. Atlanta finished the 2025 season among the top three teams in sacks and set a new franchise record with 57 sacks. During the 2024 season, the defense was at the bottom of league rankings for nearly all defensive categories.

  • Monday Night Field Goal: Atlanta Falcons 27, L.A. Rams 24

Monday night was the second Monday Night Football game of the season for the Falcons. Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice

Zane Gonzalez hit a 52-yard field goal to win the game. I repeat: 52 yards to win on Monday night over the Los Angeles Rams. The Falcons have now won three games in a row. This is not a prank. This is the real deal.

The Los Angeles Rams hadn’t been held scoreless during the first half of a game all season before they set foot in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The Falcons had failed to hold an opponent scoreless during the first half of any game this season. On Monday, against a team with nearly twice as many victories, Atlanta accomplished that feat.

That defensive effort could be seen as a sign of what this team is capable of when healthy and focused. Or it could just be a good night in a season of bad nights. The Falcons’ defense also gave up 21 unanswered points, including a touchdown on a blocked field goal late in the third quarter. Either way, the Atlanta Falcons won their seventh game of the season.

The Atlanta Falcons are at the end of the road. There’s only one remaining game on the 2025 schedule, and after Monday night’s victory over the Los Angeles Rams, there’s a good chance to end the season on a high note. The Falcons are now on a three-game winning streak.

On Monday night, the Atlanta Falcons faced the Los Angeles Rams in a game that meant much more to the visiting Rams than it did to the Falcons. But only in the standings. The Rams were a game behind the San Francisco 49ers and two games behind the Seattle Seahawks, two teams that had defeated the Falcons this season. Atlanta, on the other hand, was looking to extend their two-game winning streak and get another game closer to going .500 at home.

There’s one more Falcons home game to play this season. Up Next: the New Orleans Saints on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Photo by Donnell Suggs/The Atlanta Voice

The game got off to a competitive start, with Atlanta scoring on the second offensive possession of the game. The 11-play, 65-yard drive included Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins finding receivers David Sills IV and Darnell Mooney on long pass routes, and running back Bijan Robinson with a pair of passes, the latter for the first touchdown of the game. Robinson came into the game with 2,000 total yards from scrimmage and had already passed the 800-yard receiving mark following the first quarter. In just his third season, Robinson now has the team’s single-season record for most yards from scrimmage.

On the following defensive possession, the Falcons’ defensive front, arguably the MVP of the season, got a big fourth-down stop on their own 13-yard line. Reserve edge rusher Khalid Kareem came up with the big stop on Rams running back Kyren Williams.

Early in the second quarter, Atlanta failed to take advantage of that seven-point cushion and punted on their next possession. The Rams, led by former University of Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, did even worse on their next opportunity to score. Stafford was not only picked off by Falcons safety Jessie Bates III at the Rams’ 25-yard line, but he had to watch Bates III make his way into the end zone, putting Atlanta ahead 14-0 following the extra point by kicker Zane Gonzalez.

The interception was only the fifth of the season for Stafford. He would throw a sixth interception on the following Rams possession. Prior to Monday night, Stafford had only thrown two interceptions in one game this season, a 31-28 loss at Carolina on November 30. Stafford was sacked twice in that game. He was sacked four times during the first half of the game on Monday night.

Robinson added a second touchdown to his 125-yard first half with a 93-yard run that put Atlanta ahead 21-0 with 1:28 remaining in the first half.

Falcons rookie safety Xavier Watts intercepted two Stafford passes during the game. The latter ended a drive that could have tied the score with nine minutes remaining in the game. Watts now has five interceptions on the season.

None of that mattered as the Rams scored 21 unanswered points to tie the game at 24 with less than three minutes to play. Rams receiver Puca Nacua, who had been a problem the entire game, scored the game-tying touchdown.

  • PREVIEW – Week 2: Classic Matchups for These Rare Birds – Philadelphia Sports Nation

PREVIEW – Week 2: Classic Matchups for These Rare Birds – Philadelphia Sports Nation

For the Eagles and the Falcons — It’s Nothing Short of Amazing Matchups.

In the wild, deep, and largely untouched expanse of America’s wildness — Falcons and Eagles sometimes entangle. For the Eagles and Falcons in two different NFC Divisions, playing against each other hasn’t been an annual tradition. It has, however, brought us some of the best moments for both franchises. On Monday night, as the Eagles look to continue a path to the Super Bowl — Lincoln Financial Field will once again be electric for another chapter in a history that already runs deep between these two franchises.

Since Atlanta entered the NFL in 1966 — the teams have played 37 times, including four postseason matchups. The Eagles lead the series 21–15–1 going into Monday night — another opportunity for another great chapter to be told.

In the 1978 NFC Wildcard Round, an up-and-coming Eagles playoff team under Coach Dick Vermeil traveled to Atlanta. After a 13–0 Eagles lead, Atlanta would come back to win the game 14–13 thanks in part to a controversial call where Falcons wide receiver Wallace Francis and Eagles Safety Herm Edwards both went caught the ball at the same time. The ruling went in the Falcons’ favor.

When Andy Reid’s Eagles were fast becoming contenders in the early 2000s, the Eagles would again meet the Falcons in the post-season. The much-billed matchup between Donovan McNabb and Michael Vick featured McNabb’s first game back from a broken ankle in the 2003 NFC Divisional Playoffs at the Linc. The Eagles would win that game 20–6.

Two years later — Vick and the Falcons would return to Lincoln Financial Field for the 2005 NFC Championship Game. In a game when the Eagles offense wouldn’t be denied and a genius scheme from Eagles Defensive Coordinator Jim Johnson — flipping defensive ends Javon Kearse and Derrick Burgess and not letting the elusive Michael Vick escape to his left in the 27–10 victory.

Then, in January of 2018 — in one of the most memorable games in Eagles history — Nick Foles and the Eagles would beat the Falcons 15–10. It was a game that featured an Eagles goal line stand against Julio Jones and Matt Ryan with only seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. It was the first post-season victory in the Eagles’ Super Bowl-winning, magical season of 2017-2018.

In the wild — bald Eagles of the Accipitridae family dominate the skies against any other flying mammal in the region.
On Monday night, the Eagles will undoubtedly dominate the South Philly skies once again, with the Falcons in their territory.

  • Jets will start Tim Boyle at QB for second consecutive week vs. Falcons

Jets will start Tim Boyle at QB for second consecutive week vs. Falcons

Gang Green changed quarterbacks ahead of Friday’s game hoping for an offensive spark.

That didn’t happen and the Dolphins rolled past the Jets 34-13.

However, Tim Boyle will get another opportunity to lead the Jets offense in Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons.

“We’re giving Timmy another shot to roll next week,” Jets coach Robert Saleh said. “Obviously, there’s things that he could have done better, there are things that he had no control over and I know he battled out there.

“We were able to get to certain calls that we were hoping to do. We were able to execute a lot of the different things that we wanted to execute, it just didn’t come to full fruition.”

In his first start in two seasons and the fourth of his career, Boyle completed 27 of 38 passes for 179 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. He was also sacked seven times, a direct result of the Jets having to use their eighth different offensive line combination in 11 games.

Boyle previously started three games for the Detroit Lions in 2021 when Jared Goff was injured.

The Jets’ offense has been abysmal after Aaron Rodgers’ Achilles’ tear in Week 1 against the Buffalo Bills. Zach Wilson started the next nine games until he was benched for Boyle during the third quarter against Buffalo in Week 11 after continued poor play and holding onto the football too long. This season, Wilson has thrown for 1,944 yards with six touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The only other QB option for the Jets is Trevor Siemian, who was recently signed to the active roster after the team signed him to the practice squad in late September. When asked about Siemian possibly starting, Saleh said, “I’m not there yet.”

The Jets (4-7) are currently on a four-game losing streak. The team’s inability to find the end zone is a significant reason for the downslide.

Gang Green has just 10 offensive touchdowns in 11 games. That has led to the Jets ranking last in total yards (262.2) and 30th in points per game (14.8). The Jets are also last in the NFL in third down conversion (24.1%) and red zone touchdown percentage (28%).

The Jets hoped hiring offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett would improve the offense, but their yards and points per game are worse than a season ago when the team finished 7-10. However, Hackett will continue to be the offensive play caller.

“When you look at it all — and again, it’s a little bit of everything,” Saleh said after Friday’s loss. “Whether the calls could be better, whether the execution can be better, whether our one-on-one battles could be better — it’s taking advantage of the situations we have when we get them.

“Do I think play caller will fix that? I don’t know. I don’t have an answer for you on that one.”

Hackett’s relationship with Rodgers is likely the primary reason he will remain the offensive play caller moving forward. With a headset, Rodgers watched the Jets lose to the Dolphins from the sideline. After his Achilles tear, Rodgers initially rehabbed in California. But now, Rodgers will join the team full-time in New Jersey for the season’s final six games.

“He is in the building,” Saleh said.

There has been chatter about Rodgers returning to the field before the end of the season. However, with the Jets playoff chances on life support along with the offensive line issues, that may not happen.

The Jets could open Rodgers’ practice window sometime in December, assuming doctors clear him.

“With regard to practice, I don’t have anything for you guys on that,” Saleh said. “Like I said, when we get a doctor’s note that says he is cleared, he will be cleared for practice.”

    DOLPHINS SLAM TURF AT METLIFE

The Dolphins may have won a key divisional game against a bitter rival on Black Friday, but they lost one of the better defensive players in the process.

Linebacker Jaelan Phillips tore his Achilles and will miss the rest of the 2023 season. He registered 43 tackles and 6.5 sacks for the Dolphins this season.

“It was emotional,” Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said. “I think that’s one of the special things about this particular team, is there’s a lot of shared journeys. Everybody sees what he puts in on a daily basis and everybody knows how bad he wants to take steps in his game and be absolutely great in this league, which he has and we’ve been very proud of him the whole season.”

Following Phillips’ injury, the conversation turned to the controversial turf at MetLife Stadium. So far this season, Phillips, Rodgers and Jets defensive tackle Al Woods have torn their Achilles on the same field.

MetLife did change their turf field last offseason, going from slit film to an updated version of FieldTurf. The change was supposed to be a safer alternative, but that has not been the case.

Many around the league, including Eagles cornerback Darius Slay and Ravens coach John Harbaugh, have previously criticized the MetLife Stadium turf.

“Since being in the league, I’ve heard that field is trash,” Dolphins safety Jevon Holland said. “I don’t know the statistics or anything like that, but I do know turf increases the chance of getting hurt.”

Dolphins running back Raheem Mostert was also vocal about MetLife’s playing surface after seeing his teammate suffer a season-ending injury.

“No player wants to go down with a significant injury,” Mostert said. “You saw what happened to Rodgers, very first game within the first series. It just sucks. We got to do something about this turf and this playing surface because, obviously, it’s still a major problem. It just has to change.”
