The passenger of a car has died after the vehicle they were in struck a Fairfax County, Virginia, ambulance that was on its way to an emergency.
It happened Tuesday afternoon at Worldgate Drive and Alton Square in Herndon.
A Fairfax County ambulance with its “full emergency equipment activated” was trying to turn onto Alton Square, but the driver of a 2007 Hyundai failed to yield and struck the ambulance, according to news release from police.
The car’s passenger, 35-year-old Irvin Escobar Lujuan, of Sterling, was taken to the hospital where he later died. The driver, 23-year-old Jose Lopez Martinez, of Nokesville, was also hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

The Virginia High School League has banned Hayfield High School’s football team from the 2024 and 2025 postseasons, according to a source deeply familiar with the situation.
Hayfield has appealed the decision, though, and a Virginia High School League committee is scheduled to hear the appeal Nov. 4.
A spokesperson for Fairfax County Public Schools told InsideNoVa, “Hayfield Secondary School continues to work closely with the Virginia High School League and we have no further updates at this time.”
Hayfield’s football team is currently 8-1 and rated No. 1 in Class 6, Region C in the latest league power point ratings. Based on regular season results, the ratings determine the top eight teams that qualify for the playoffs from each region.
The first round of the regional playoffs is scheduled to begin the weekend of Nov. 15-16. The regular season ends Nov. 8.
Questions have swirled around the Hayfield team since it hired former Freedom-Woodbridge football coach Darryl Overton earlier this year. Overton led Freedom to two successive Class 6 state championships.
This summer, the Fairfax County school system investigated whether students from Freedom had followed Overton to Hayfield and were not living in Hayfield’s school district.
After a two-month investigation, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent Michelle Reid in August announced Hayfield’s football program had been cleared of any wrongdoing regarding transfers and eligibility following a two-month investigation.
But the Virginia High School League, the principal sanctioning organization for interscholastic athletic competition among public high schools in the state, has the authority to conduct its own separate investigation.
Officials with the Virginia High School League did not wish to comment on the matter.

A young girl in Virginia is sharing her love for reading in a big way.
Emma Fischer, 11, recently became a Cadet in her Girl Scout Troop and decided to pick a passion of hers for her service project.
“I decided to combine my love of reading with this challenge,” Fischer said.
Fischer, a sixth grader at Mantua Elementary School in Fairfax, decided to collect books for the Inova Cares for Children clinic in Falls Church.
She put up flyers and her dad, Kolin, let her post to his Facebook page. She set up a collection box in front of the Mantua Swim and Tennis Club, until they quickly discovered they’d have to keep emptying the box because they were receiving so many donations.
“It was sometimes two, three times a day. We were shuttling back and forth, filling up the car, bringing it back home, and coming back out,” said Kolin.
They collected around 650 new and used books. Fischer said she’s grateful that the books are going to children in need.
“I feel really good about it, and I really love that it takes their minds off of whatever they’re going through right now,” she said.
Fischer and her family will be delivering the books to the clinic next Friday.
Fischer’s dad said his daughter’s love for reading helped their family get through an incredibly tough time.
“My father in law, her grandfather, passed away, and (before) she would come to the hospital with books to take his mind off of what he was going through,” he said. “She thought back to that time when she was coming up with ideas: ‘I was able to take my grandfather’s mind off of the kind of the pain he was going through. And maybe this can help children in the same type of way.’”
Fischer is incredibly grateful that so many people decided to donate.
“It felt amazing. I was really surprised (by) how much the community was willing to support me,” Fischer said.

Canadian billionaire Prem Watsa’s Fairfax is back in the fray bidding for IDBI Bank with a sweetened deal.
According to highly placed sources aware of the matter Fairfax seems to have agreed for an all-cash compensation structure to acquire IDBI Bank. In addition, Watsa is said to have committed to ensure that the identity of IDBI Bank will be preserved after divestment.
The revised offer from Fairfax is believed to have been communicated to the government officials about two weeks ago.
“Until now, the bidders including Fairfax were hesitant to offer cash compensation and that was a contentious issue because the government usually doesn’t entertain share swap structures. If this is taken care of, the deal may tilt in favour of Fairfax,” said a senior executive aware of the matter. The improved offer comes amidst political tension between India and Canada and the sweetener extended by Fairfax could once again make it a top contender for IDBI Bank.
Revised terms
According to the revised offer, Fairfax India Holding, the Indian entity of the PE major, would bid for IDBI Bank. Since Fairfax is also the promoter of CSB Bank, the former may be merged into IDBI Bank once the deal is sealed, because Indian banking regulations mandate that an investor cannot be a promoter of two banks at the same time. With the market cap of IDBI Bank at ₹90,438 crore multiple times higher than CSB Bank’s ₹5,980 crore market capitalisation, sources say the revised structure would be beneficial for IDBI Bank.
This is a departure from the earlier proposals where Fairfax intended to hold IDBI Bank as a separate entity for a few years post the acquisition and subsequently merge it with CSB Bank. “The Reserve Bank is not keen to allow parallel structures for a common promoter and with IDBI Bank being a very established entity, the government wasn’t not comfortable with the bank losing its identity,” said another senior executive aware of the transaction. Bid from Fairfax India Holding would effectively address concerns raised by the RBI and the government.
With IDBI Bank’s stock price zooming from ₹60 a share when divestment talks were initiated to now over ₹84 a piece, it would be interesting to see if Kotak Mahindra Bank which is also reportedly in fray for IDBI Bank would be willing to match or better Watsa’s offer.
Divestment of IDBI Bank started in October 2022 with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) and the government selling 30.24 per cent stake 30.48 per cent stake respectively in the bank. Email sent to Fairfax and the finance ministry remained unanswered till press time.
