    METEOROLOGIST KELLY CURRAN HERE NOW WITH DETAILS. YES, WE ARE STILL SEEING SOME SHOWERS OUT THERE, MAINLY IN THE SIERRA. WE SEE A LITTLE RAIN AROUND RENO. WE’VE SEEN A FEW SNOW SHOWERS AROUND TRUCKEE AND SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, BUT NOW THAT EVERYTHING IS WINDING DOWN, WE CAN FINALLY GET A LOOK AT JUST HOW MUCH RAIN AND SNOW WE’VE RECEIVED. AND FOR THAT, WE’RE GOING TO HEAD OVER TO METEOROLOGIST OPHELIA YOUNG WITH SOME OF THOSE TOTALS. OPHELIA. YEAH, KELLY, OUR FIRST MAJOR WIDESPREAD STORM OF THE SEASON. AND BOY, IT DID NOT DISAPPOINT. BUT GETTING THOSE TOTALS WAS A LITTLE CHALLENGING BECAUSE THE STORM WAS SO EARLY AND A LOT OF THE SKI RESORTS WHERE TOTALS ARE COLLECTED ARE STILL CLOSED. ALSO, SOME OF THE SNOW MELTED INTO THE WARMER GROUND, BUT I DID DIG AROUND SOME OF THE SNOTEL SITES AND THIS IS WHAT THEY’RE REPORTING. MORE THAN A HALF FOOT AT ECHO PEAK AND PALISADES, BUT MORE THAN A FOOT IN MOUNT ROSE AND HEAVENLY AND EBBETTS PASS A FOOT AND A HALF. STILL, A FEW SHOWERS LINGERING SO THESE NUMBERS COULD GO UP. BUT I THINK IN THE VALLEY AND FOOTHILLS WE’RE DONE WITH WET WEATHER. SACRAMENTO DID THE BEST, CLOCKING MORE THAN AN INCH AND A HALF. STOCKTON ALSO ABOUT AN INCH AND A HALF NOW MODESTO MORE THAN AN INCH. THEY SET A NEW DAILY RECORD RAIN YESTERDAY, RAIN TOTAL. AND IN AUBURN, 0.48. YUBA CITY REGISTERING 0.88. NOW THESE ARE JUST TOTALS FROM A FEW LOCAL AIRPORTS. THE ENTIRE REGION GOT SOMETHING MEASURABLE AND NOW WE’RE GETTING READY FOR QUIETER AND NICER REST OF THE WEEK FOR THAT.   • Meta scraps Facebook page tracking ICE agents in Chicago after Justice Dept. asked it to

    Meta has removed a Facebook page used to track the presence of immigration agents in Chicago at the request of the Department of Justice, the company confirmed on Tuesday.

    Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a post on X that “following outreach” from the DOJ, Facebook removed a “large group page” that was being used to target Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the city.

    In the post, Bondi said the page was part of an effort to “dox and target” the ICE agents.

    Some 200 ICE agents are there as part of President Trump’s immigration enforcement drive. Doxxing is the sharing of personal information about people online.

    Meta said in a statement that the group “was removed for violating our policies against coordinated harm.”

    Meta is the latest tech company to restrict tools used to track ICE agents on its platform. Earlier this month, Apple and Google blocked downloads of phone apps that flag sightings of U.S. immigration agents, just hours after the Trump administration demanded that one particularly popular iPhone app be taken down.

    Bondi has said such tracking puts ICE agents at risk. But users and developers of the apps say it’s their First Amendment right to capture what ICE is doing in their neighborhoods, and they maintain that most users turn to these platforms in an effort to protect their own safety as Mr. Trump steps up aggressive immigration enforcement across the country.

    While a Facebook group for ICE sightings in Chicago does appear to have been taken down, as of Tuesday evening, dozens of other groups, some with thousands of members, remained visible on Facebook.

THERE WAS A LONG LINE OF VEHICLES BEING STOPPED ON THE EASTBOUND LANES OF I-80 AT KINGVALE AND CALTRANS. CREWS WERE STATIONED ALONG THE SHOULDER OF THE INTERSTATE, WARNING DRIVERS OF ICY ROAD CONDITIONS AND TO TAKE IT SLOW. NOW, MANY DRIVERS HAD TO STOP AT THE SHELL GAS STATION TO BUY CHAINS BEFORE CONTINUING ON THE INTERSTATE. NEXT IS BY SOME CHAINS AND INSTALL THEM REAL QUICK AND THEN HOPEFULLY BE ON OUR WAY. NOPE. I’M KIND OF SURPRISED. I THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO BE RAIN. SO THIS IS AWESOME. WE WERE WE WERE TRYING TO BEAT IT, BUT WE GOT HELD UP IN SACRAMENTO. BUT IT’S FINE ADVICE GOING INTO, YOU KNOW, THIS WINTER SEASON, I GUESS JUST DRIVE, DRIVE SLOWLY. AND YOU KNOW, WATCH OUT FOR THE TRUCK DRIVERS. AND YOU DON’T NEED TO CARRY CHAINS. WE’VE SEEN CALTRANS CREWS TREATING THOSE ROADWAYS, PLOWING THE SNOW AS WELL OUT OF THE INTERSTATE. BUT FOR THE MOST PART, AGAIN, THINGS ARE LOOKING REALLY SLOW RIGHT NOW. IF YOU’RE TRAVELING IN AND OUT OF THE SIERRA, IF YOU ARE COMING UP HERE, BRING THOSE CHAINS WITH YOU. INSTALL THEM, OF COURSE, AT THOSE CHAIN CONTROL LOCATIONS, IF YOU DON’T HAVE THEM, YOU CAN BUY THEM AT THAT SHELL GAS STATION AT KINGVALE. BUT AGAIN, IT’S GOING TO TAKE YOU QUITE A BIT OF TIME BECAUSE A LOT OF THE TRAFFIC IS STOPPED. AND REMEMBER, THE SPEED LIMIT IS ALSO ONLY 30MPH, WHEN CHAIN CONTROLS ARE IN EFFECT.     Sierra snow travel: Chain controls in effect on Interstate 80, Highway 50

    Rain has been the headliner for the start of Northern California’s winter storm, but snow is picking up in the Sierra.The largest amounts are expected in the afternoon and the evening. The heaviest snow will be south of Donner Summit, Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn said. (Video above: Winter storm updates Tuesday at 10 p.m.)Below is the latest information on chain controls. 11:00 p.m.: Reporter Andres Valle was in Livetracker 3 and showed that I-80, around 6,000 feet elevation, was covered in snow. The following chain controls remain in effect:Interstate 80: Chain controls are in effect eastbound from Cisco to Donner Lake Interchange and westbound from Donner Lake Interchange to 2.5 miles east of the junction for Highway 20 in Nevada County.Highway 50: Chains are required from three miles east of Kyburz to MeyersHighway 88: Chains are required from Ham’s Station to Picketts JunctionHighway 4: The highway is closed from 0.7 miles east of Lake Alpine to the junction of Highway 89 due to snow. Additionally, chains are required from Camp Connell to the Mt. Reba turnoffHighway 89: Chains are required on all vehicles from Picketts Junction to 2.7 miles south of the junction with Highway 50 in El Dorado County.     EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. —

    Rain has been the headliner for the start of Northern California’s winter storm, but snow is picking up in the Sierra.

    The largest amounts are expected in the afternoon and the evening. The heaviest snow will be south of Donner Summit, Meteorologist Dirk Verdoorn said.

    Below is the latest information on chain controls.

    11:00 p.m.: Reporter Andres Valle was in Livetracker 3 and showed that I-80, around 6,000 feet elevation, was covered in snow.

    The following chain controls remain in effect:

    • Interstate 80: Chain controls are in effect eastbound from Cisco to Donner Lake Interchange and westbound from Donner Lake Interchange to 2.5 miles east of the junction for Highway 20 in Nevada County.
    • Highway 50: Chains are required from three miles east of Kyburz to Meyers
    • Highway 88: Chains are required from Ham’s Station to Picketts Junction
    • Highway 4: The highway is closed from 0.7 miles east of Lake Alpine to the junction of Highway 89 due to snow. Additionally, chains are required from Camp Connell to the Mt. Reba turnoff
    • Highway 89: Chains are required on all vehicles from Picketts Junction to 2.7 miles south of the junction with Highway 50 in El Dorado County. Additionally, chains are required on vehicles from Bliss State Park to Tahoe City.

  • Meta removes Facebook Group for tracking ICE agents after DOJ pressure

    Attorney General Pam Bondi posted on X that the Department of Justice contacted Facebook in order to have a group removed that she claimed “was being used to dox and target” US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents operating in Chicago. We reached out to Meta for confirmation and a representative said, “This Group was removed for violating our policies against coordinated harm,” however they did not confirm the name of the group or whether the DOJ was involved in the action. 

    Officers for the immigration agency have reportedly been moving through Chicago with facial coverings, no name tags and sometimes in vehicles with no license plates, although a US District Judge ruled that all ICE agents who are not undercover are required to display visible identification while operating in the Chicagoland area. 

    The Department of Justice has demanded that other tech companies remove content the current administration has deemed critical of its immigration policies and practices. At the start of the month, Apple removed ICEBlock, an app for tracking the movements of immigration agents, from the App Store following similar pressure from Bondi. “Capitulating to an authoritarian regime is never the right move,” ICEBlock developer Joshua Aaron said in an interview following the action. “Our mission has always been to protect our neighbors from the terror this administration continues to reign down on the people of this nation.”

  • Facebook Removes ICE-Tracking Group Under Pressure From Trump Regime

    Attorney General Pam Bondi announced Tuesday that the U.S. Justice Department had succeeded in getting Facebook to remove a group on the platform that allowed people in Chicago to alert their neighbors when ICE was in the area.

    “Today following outreach from @thejusticedept Facebook removed a large group page that was being used to dox and target @ICEgov agents in Chicago,” Bondi wrote on X.

    “The wave of violence against ICE has been driven by online apps and social media campaigns designed to put ICE officers at risk just for doing their jobs,” Bondi continued. “The Department of Justice will continue engaging tech companies to eliminate platforms where radicals can incite imminent violence against federal law enforcement.”

    Right-wing influencer Laura Loomer tweeted about a Facebook group called “ICE Sighting-Chicagoland” on October 8, which appears to be the group that was removed. Loomer claimed on Monday that she had been informed by a source at the Department of Justice that the agency had contacted Facebook’s parent company, Meta, about the page.

    “DOJ source tells me they have seen my report and they have contacted Facebook and their executives at META to tell them they need to remove these ICE tracking pages from the platform,” Loomer tweeted. “We will see if they comply. There are DOZENS of pages like the one below that endanger the lives of @ICEgov agents.”

    In an emailed statement to Gizmodo, Meta didn’t confirm the name but said a group “was removed for violating our policies against coordinated harm.” Meta didn’t respond to follow-up questions about what kind of specific activity was taking place that violated the policy. But the policy does note that it’s against the Facebook rules to out the undercover status of “law enforcement, military, or security personnel if the content contains the agent’s name, their face or badge.”

    It’s completely legal to share information about where police are operating. In fact, the idea that sharing such information should be illegal is only common in authoritarian countries. But Bondi and the Department of Justice have declared war on anyone sharing such basic information, characterizing it as dangerous or violent. And it is against Facebook’s policies for anyone to share information about the secret police that are currently roaming American streets, abducting people. It’s not clear, however, that “doxxing” is what led to the group being removed. That’s just the suggestion from the tech giant.

    ICE agents in the U.S. have been criticized for their lack of identification and their frequent use of masks while kidnapping people off the streets. Free countries typically don’t have masked agents of the state refuse to identify themselves, and experts have warned that the practice is just one more step in America’s descent into fascism. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, it should be noted, has become quite chummy with President Trump over the past year.

    ICE is currently engaging in a campaign of terror against residents of Chicagoland, and the stories that have been emerging are sometimes hard to believe. For example, the Chicago Tribune reported on Monday that a 44-year-old woman getting off a double shift at a bar downtown earlier this month was suddenly grabbed by three federal agents who zip-tied her hands. They questioned her for an hour, simply because she looked Latina, and didn’t believe her passport was real.

    From the Chicago Tribune:

    Greeley, who was born at Illinois Masonic hospital and is adopted, carries a copy of her passport just in case she runs into federal agents.

    “I am Latina and I am a service worker,” Greeley said. “I fit the description of what they’re looking for now.”

    During the encounter, Greeley said they told her she “doesn’t look like” a Greeley.

    “They said this isn’t real, they kept telling me I’m lying, I’m a liar,” Greeley recalled. “I told them to look in the rest of my wallet, I have my credit cards, my insurance.”

    When the agents let her go, Greeley got home and screamed when she saw the shadow on her door. Days after the incident, Greeley said, it’s still “terrifying.”

    Another recent story from the Chicago Sun-Times explained how a raid on an apartment building saw people trying to protect their neighbors from getting kidnapped on Sept. 30. One resident hid a mother and her 7-year-old daughter for three days in a way that many have compared to the story of Anne Frank.

    There are countless stories like that emerging from the Chicago area, which makes it that much more galling when Bondi insists that sharing information about ICE is somehow creating a danger for the ICE agents.

    Apple also recently removed apps that allowed people to share the location of federal agents spotted in their neighborhoods. Bondi took credit for pressuring Apple to disappear the apps. The removals are eerily similar to what happened during pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong in 2019, where Apple also removed an app that allowed users to see Hong Kong police movements via crowdsourced information.

    Is the U.S. becoming more and more like China with each passing day? Even the Wall Street Journal seems to think so. And when Bondi calls Americans who don’t like to see their neighbors abducted “radicals,” you know we’re in a very bad place as a country.

  • My Younger Employees Only Want to Communicate by Text

    Inc.com columnist Alison Green answers questions about workplace and management issues—everything from how to deal with a micromanaging boss to how to talk to someone on your team about body odor.

    Here’s a roundup of answers to three questions from readers.

    1. My younger employees prefer communicating by text

    I manage a team of five younger professionals, all between the ages of 25 to 30. I have noticed that each of them prefers to communicate with me almost exclusively by text message or through the chat feature in our collaboration software. Conversations by phone, video, or in-person only happen when I initiate them.

    When I initiate an in-person conversation or phone call, my employees don’t seem opposed and typically are very engaged, but if left up to them it seems like all of the interaction with me would be via text or chat. In my own career, I’ve always valued being able to talk one-on-one with my manager, whether it’s during a formal meeting or impromptu. Is the preference my employees show for engaging with me by text or chat generational or should this be a warning sign that my team does not view me as approachable, or doesn’t place much value in one-on-one time with me as a manager?

    Green responds:

    I’m not a fan of broad statements about generations because people are individuals…but in general there has been a cultural shift away from phone calls and toward other methods of communication. Not just among 20-somethings, but more broadly. And since your employees’ entire time in the workforce has been since that shift started, it makes sense that you’d see it reflected in them.

    Since they’re very engaged when you initiate calls or talk in-person, I wouldn’t worry that they don’t find you approachable or don’t value their time with you. Those communication methods just aren’t their go-tos. If you want, you could always ask them about it; maybe it’ll turn out that they think of calling or stopping by in-person as more of an interruption to you, and think they’re respecting your time by not doing it. But lots of people of all ages have just fallen into this particular set of preferences, and that’s likely all it is.

    2. Screening out bigots in interviews

    A member of our team was recently fired. There had been numerous problems with this teammate, including various remarks made to women and gay men that were not acceptable. So now the search is on to find a replacement.

    How do we ensure we don’t hire another bigot? I can’t flat out ask, “Are you comfortable working with women? How about gay men?” Can I? As a gay man myself, one thought I’ve had is to say, “I’m [name], and I live in the [part of town] of [city] with my husband and dog. [more basic personal info].” If they make a face or seem taken aback, red flag. Is this a reasonable approach or is there a better way?

    Green responds:

    Sharing information about yourself is fine to do. But you’re more likely to get a better sense if you ask about these issues more directly. For example, you could ask, “To what extent have you worked on teams with a broad diversity of race, gender, and sexual orientation, and what have you learned from those experiences?” If this person will be managing anyone, you could ask, “Can you tell me about a time that you had particular success in building an equitable and inclusive team with a variety of demographics, or when you faced an obstacle in doing that? What happened and how did you approach it?” (These questions also signal something about your culture to your candidates, which is useful.)

    3. How to unfriend someone I have to fire

    A few years back, I started at a new company in a mid-level role. During that time, I accepted Facebook friend requests from a few coworkers, all at my level. Generally speaking, I’m fine being friends with coworkers on Facebook as I don’t share anything I wouldn’t want the entire world to see. However, since then I was promoted to the director of our department. I am still friends with coworkers, because I’m comfortable with the content I share being appropriate for the workplace.

    However, I am in the process of terminating an employee on my team, who I am still friends with on Facebook. I understand that they most likely won’t want to remain social media friends with a boss who just let them go. I don’t want to put this employee in any more of an uncomfortable position, knowing how stressful and upsetting losing a job already is. Do I unfriend them prior to letting them go, unfriend them when we finalize the termination, or just see what happens and let them decide if they want to disconnect?

    Green responds:

    Definitely don’t unfriend the person right before letting them go; if they notice, it’ll look ominous and awfully cold. Frankly, doing it right afterwards will look pretty cold too! You’re better off leaving it in their hands; they can unfriend you if they want, block your posts, or whatever they’re comfortable with.

    For what it’s worth, ideally you would have disconnected from anyone you managed on Facebook when you became the director, because this is only the first of a bunch of awkward situations that could come up. It’s not enough that you’re not concerned about what you might post; being connected to them means you might see things they’d rather their boss not see or think about (their politics, health, family, whatever it might be) — and it’s less fraught for you to take the lead on fixing that than it is for them. And if you disconnect from everyone at once, it’s easy to explain it’s not personal and you just don’t want them to feel like you’re watching what they post.

  • Old video of cable car accident falsely linked to new system in India’s Uttar Pradesh

    India’s first urban cable car system began trial runs in October, which is built in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home constituency, Varanasi, in Uttar Pradesh. Social media users have shared a clip with a false claim it showed an accident at the system’s debut trip. But the journalist who covered the actual event shown in the video told AFP it was filmed in Dongargarh in central India in April.

    “Modi built a four-kilometre (2.4-mile) ropeway in Varanasi at a cost of eight billion rupees ($95 million). The carriage broke and fell down during its debut trip — and interestingly, a BJP leader was also in it,” reads a Hindi-language Facebook post on October 1, 2025, referring to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

    The 26-second video shows a cable car setting off before cutting to a scene of a crashed gondola and injured passengers.

    The clip appeared with similar claims on Instagram and X as trial runs of India’s first urban public transport ropeway began in Varanasi on October 2, the ANI news agency reported (archived link).

    Aimed at improving the city’s urban mobility, the 3.8-kilometre (2.36-mile) corridor will use 148 gondolas to transport up to 100,000 passengers a day.

    But the video actually shows a cable car accident in the neighbouring Chhattisgarh state.

    A reverse image search on Google using keyframes found the same video uploaded on Instagram on April 25, 2025 (archived link).

    The post captioned in Hindi reads in part: “Ropeway trolley broke in Dongargarh, BJP leader narrowly escaped, was brought to Rajnandgaon Sanjeevani Hospital.”

    Rajnandgaon district in Chhattisgarh is located 660 kilometres (410 miles) from Varanasi.

    The caption credits the report to Monaj Dewangan, a reporter with the local news outlet Correct News CG, who told AFP the footage was filmed in Chhattisgarh.

    “The ropeway suddenly crashed. The BJP leader, onboard along with other passengers, sustained injuries. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital,” he said on October 8, 2025. 

    Local media outlets reporting the accident said a gondola carrying devotees to the Bamleshwari temple in Dongargarh detached from the cable and fell to the ground, injuring some BJP leaders among others (archived here, here and here).

    ANI published a clip on October 3 on a trial run on the Varanasi cable car system, which shows gondolas bearing a different livery from those seen in the false video (archived link).

    Uttar Pradesh police also dismissed the false claim in a post on its X account (archived link).

    Did you find this article by typing in the name of a website associated with Elon Musk? Did it sound like you could invest in SpaceX, Neuralink, or one of Musk’s AI ventures like Grok and xAI? It’s fake. It’s 100%, without a doubt, completely fake.

    I know you may not believe it, but please read on. Because this article could save you from losing a lot of money. Elon Musk is a very wealthy man. He’s worth $500 billion, according to Forbes, making him the wealthiest person on the planet. But Musk does not have a website dedicated to making other people rich.

    You may have seen an ad on Facebook or maybe a video on Instagram, TikTok, or YouTube. It may have even looked like Elon Musk was talking about some amazing investment opportunity. Maybe it looked like Elon was raising money for a sick child. You may have even been asked to send money through gift cards or a bitcoin ATM. But it was fake. You need to believe us. Because it’s true.

    Musk does not have a website selling cryptocurrencies. He doesn’t have a website for trading stocks. He doesn’t have a public website selling shares of his private companies like SpaceX, Neuralink, xAI, and X. The promotional video you saw is fake and probably used artificial intelligence tools to make it look like Elon Musk was saying something he never said.

    People are losing millions

    Did someone reach out to you on a social media site like Facebook or Instagram claiming to be Elon? Did they tell you to talk with them over Signal or Telegram or WhatsApp? That person is a scammer. Elon Musk does not reach out to people on websites and ask them for money. And if they haven’t already asked you to send money, that part is coming.

    Again, you might be skeptical. A lot of people want to believe that Elon Musk is offering ways for the average person to become rich. But he’s not. Among other reasons, he doesn’t have time.

    Here at Gizmodo, we’ve written about scammers impersonating Elon Musk for years.

    • There was the woman in Washington who lost $63,000 because she thought she was talking to Elon.
    • There was the man in North Carolina who drained his 401k of over half a million dollars.
    • There was the person who lost over $18,000 watching a video livestream they thought was for Tesla.
    • There was also the Florida principal who sent an Elon Musk scammer a check for $100,000.

    People have literally been losing millions of dollars to scammers over the years because they thought they were investing in something approved by Elon Musk. But it was all fake.

    Scam AI Videos

    It’s incredible what can be accomplished with AI these days. You can make people appear to say things they never said. For example, here’s an ad we spotted below. Elon never said any of that.

    Fake Elon Websites

    All of the websites below are scams. And while Gizmodo is often reluctant to advertise the web domains of scammers, because it risks inadvertently driving more people to scammy websites, using the names of the scams is the only way to help get the word out that these specific websites will steal your money.

    The people who’ve been scammed at these sites often feel foolish afterward. And we don’t want you to feel foolish. We want you to avoid just handing your money away for nothing.

    If you’re interested in investing, there are plenty of reputable places to do that. You can even invest in Musk’s company, Tesla, if you want to buy stock in that company through a reputable stockbroker. All investing involves risks, but the websites we’ve featured here aren’t just risks where you might make some money or you might lose some money.

    Rain will be widespread for the Valley and Foothills. Places like Sacramento, Stockton and Modesto could pick up a half inch to an inch of rain Monday through Tuesday.

    The Foothills are now expected to see higher totals ranging between one and two and a half inches.

    The KCRA 3 weather team has been increasing the expected rainfall totals for Monday and Tuesday. Ponding on roads and slow travel should be expected, especially Monday evening and Tuesday morning. 

    These rain totals could lead to some ponding on roads, especially in areas where drains are blocked. Stream flooding is not currently expected. This rain will also put pause on fire season for much of the region.

    It is important to note that forecast models continue to shift as the storm approaches. The KCRA 3 weather team will provide updates as those changes come in.

    A Winter Storm Watch will go into effect Monday for places above 6,500 feet in the Sierra.

    Next week’s storm track is currently unfavorable for big snow totals around Lake Tahoe, there should still be enough accumulation for chain controls at times on Highway 50, Interstate 80 and Highway 88 Monday night through Tuesday.

    There will be enough snow for chain controls and long travel delays over Donner and Echo Summit next week. Ebbetts Pass, Sonora Pass and Monitor Pass will all be closed temporarily.

    Bigger totals are expected in Alpine and Mono County. Caltrans has said that Monitor, Ebbetts and Sonora passes will be temporarily closed because of the snow between October 13th and 16th.

    Snow levels are expected to hover between 6,000 and 7,000 feet throughout the duration of the storm.

    Two dogs are on the mend at a Springfield shelter after being abandoned at the facility’s front gates, something staff members say has been happening way too often.

    Meet Nicki and Teddy, two senior pups who are now under the much-needed care of the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri after they were left outside the shelter on their own.

    “When staff arrived to the shelter this morning, they found two dogs dumped at our front gate. This has already been an ongoing issue, but it has been increasing even more in the last month alone,” the shelter said in an Oct. 7 Facebook post.

    “If you’re unable to care for your pet, please don’t abandon them here or anywhere. It puts them in danger and there’s no guarantee we will find them safe. Thankfully, this wasn’t one of those times where we find an empty crate and the dogs are now safe in our care.”

    The dogs were in unhealthy condition with their matted fur, and one couldn’t see because its eyes were matted shut. Thankfully, the shelter was able to give them the love and compassion the two pups needed.

    Along with a shave.

    The shelter mentioned in the comment section that Teddy is a 10-year-old Yorkie mix while Nicki is a 7-year-old Schnauzer/Yorkie mix and they can’t be adopted just yet.

    A major airline is about to begin offering lie-flat beds for premium economy passengers.

    Thai Airways recently announced on Facebook that it would be launching the new seating option from October 26.

    ‘Experience greater comfort with Premium Economy Plus,’ the airline penned. 

    Passengers who book Premium Economy Plus on certain flights with Thai Airways will be able to enjoy more space and ‘exclusive services’.

    The airline described ‘large leather seats and generous legroom’ alongside images of a passenger laying down.

    Facing away from the window, the seats recline into a bed in a ‘cosy cabin’, beside an entertainment screen.

    Travellers will be able to book the upgraded option on certain flights and ‘discover a new level of comfort in the sky,’ according to Thai Airways. 

    Flights from Bangkok to Chennai, Dhaka, Hyderabad, Jakarta and Kathmandu could enjoy the new seats.

    Recently, the airline reportedly purchased the Airbus A330-300s that were previously used by Virgin Atlantic. 

    The planes featured the same 31 herringbone seats as Thai Airways are now advertising. 

    However, under Virgin Atlantic, the seats were sold as Upper Class.

    Many people recognised the seats on Facebook and took to the comments to share their thoughts.

    One person penned: ‘Premium Economy PLUS? these are the old highly unpopular Virgin Atlantic’s coffin business class seats. 

    ‘As long as they are much cheaper than Business/Royal silk class, they will be acceptable.’

    Another person wasn’t impressed by the new offering and fumed: ‘Worst seating configuration. 

    ‘Reminds me of the old Air New Zealand and Virgin Atlantic upper class layouts. Terrible. Very uncomfortable sleeping position. Coffin like environment.’

    Why Meta’s AI chatbot guidelines matter

    According to Business Insider, these rules are now in use by contractors testing Meta’s chatbot. They arrive just as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating AI chatbot makers, including Meta, OpenAI, and Google, to understand how these companies design their systems and protect children from potential harm.

    Earlier this year, we reported that Meta’s previous rules mistakenly allowed chatbots to engage in romantic conversations with children. Meta later removed that language, calling it an error. The updated guidelines mark a clear shift, now requiring chatbots to refuse any request for sexual roleplay involving minors.

    What the leaked Meta AI documents reveal

    The documents reportedly outline a strict separation between educational discussion and harmful roleplay. For example, chatbots may:

    • Discuss child exploitation in an academic or preventive context
    • Explain how grooming behaviors work in general terms
    • Provide non-sexual advice to minors about social challenges

    But chatbots must not:

    • Describe or endorse sexual relationships between children and adults
    • Provide instructions for accessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
    • Engage in roleplay that portrays a character under 18
    • Sexualize children under 13 in any way

    Meta’s communications chief Andy Stone told Business Insider that these rules reflect the company’s policy to prohibit sexualized or romantic roleplay involving minors, while adding that additional guardrails are also in place. We reached out to Meta for a comment to include in our article, but did not hear back before our deadline.

    Political pressure on Meta’s AI chatbot rules

    The timing of these disclosures is key. In August, Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., demanded that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg hand over a 200-page rule book on chatbot behavior, along with internal enforcement manuals. Meta missed the first deadline but recently began providing documents, citing a technical issue. This comes as regulators worldwide debate how to ensure the safety of AI systems, particularly as they become integrated into everyday communication tools.

    At the same time, the recent Meta Connect 2025 event showcased the company’s newest AI products, including Ray-Ban smart glasses with built-in displays and enhanced chatbot features. These announcements underscore how deeply Meta is integrating AI into daily life, making the recently revealed safety standards even more significant.

    • Review privacy settings: Check app and device controls to limit who your child can chat with.
    • Encourage reporting: Teach kids to tell you if a chatbot says something confusing, scary, or inappropriate.
    • Stay updated: Follow developments from companies like Meta and regulators like the FTC so you know what rules are changing.

  • Videos show unrest in Nepal and Indonesia, not Bangladesh

    Three people were shot dead after protests erupted in Bangladesh’s southeast border region with India over the alleged rape of a schoolgirl, but two videos showing protests scenes circulating on social media are not from the south Asian country. The clips were in fact taken during earlier demonstrations in Nepal and Indonesia.

    “Attacking the army and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in violation of Section 144 and looting weapons,” reads the Bengali-language caption to a 4-second clip shared on Facebook on September 28, 2025.

    It shows people filming and following a man holding a weapon along a street.

    The same clip was shared alongside similar claims elsewhere on Facebook after protests by indigenous communities erupted in Bangladesh’s southeastern Khagrachari district over the alleged rape of a schoolgirl (archived link).

    Three men were shot dead and dozens injured in the unrest, which prompted authorities to impose a law banning “unlawful assembly” for eight days until October 5 (archived link).

    A second clip showing another chaotic nighttime protest scene, with explosions and police cars driving down a crowded street, also surfaced on September 27 on Facebook. The post claimed it depicted the unrest in Khagrachari.

    The region has long been a flashpoint between Indigenous communities and Bengali-speakers, with clashes breaking out over land and resources.

    Bangladesh’s interior ministry chief claimed weapons from “outside the country” were fuelling the violence, while the army’s public relations wing in a statement accused the the United People’s Democratic Front (UPDF), a holdout rebel faction, of instigating the violence and firing hundreds of shots (archived link).

    On October 1, local media reported that no evidence of rape was found by a government medical board examination of the schoolgirl, but an indigenous group said the medical report was “fabricated” (archived link).

    However, none of the circulating clips were taken in Bangladesh, they instead show scenes from protests in Nepal and Indonesia.

    A reverse image search on Google using keyframes from the first falsely shared clip matches the beginning of a longer video on YouTube published on September 27, 2025 (archived link).

    The video’s caption links the footage to Nepal’s “Gen Z” protests, which began with demonstrations against a social media ban on September 8 and erupted into wider discontent over corruption and ultimately ousted the Himalayan country’s government (archived link).

    AFP found the scene corresponds to Google Street View imagery of an area outside a police station along Ring Road in Kathmandu (archived link).

    The Indonesian-language caption states the footage shows a protest in Solo, a city in central Java officially known as Surakarta, on August 29, 2025.

    Further keyword and reverse image search found another YouTube video posted on August 29 captioned “chaos at Solo protest”, showing the same incident from a different angle (archived link).

    Protests broke out across Indonesia in late-August, sparked by discontent over economic inequality and lavish perks for lawmakers and intensified by the killing of a young delivery driver by a paramilitary police unit (archived link). At least 10 people were killed, and hundreds injured.

  • Dracut school superintendent threatens to sue town officials

    DRACUT — Superintendent of Schools Steven Stone intends to sue Town Manager Kate Hodges and Board of Selectmen Chair Josh Taylor, alleging defamation of character and abuse of power.

    The news was disclosed at a special meeting of the School Committee in which committee member Rebecca Duda was removed from all subcommittee assignments because of several documents she posted on social media.

    The documents were related to a purported overpayment of retirement benefits to Andrew Graham, who worked for the School Department as a post-retirement employee.

    Notice of Stone’s suit was delivered to Hodges and Taylor on Thursday night. The first public hint of the superintendent’s action came Friday morning when Shannon Rowe, executive assistant to the Board of Selectmen, posted the agenda for a selectmen’s meeting on Tuesday, Oct. 7.

    The email announced an executive session, rather than a regular session, “to discuss strategy with respect to threatened litigation in the matter of the School Superintendent vs. the Chair of the Selectmen and Town Manager as an open meeting may have a detrimental effect on the public body’s litigating position.”

    The School Committee held its own special, but public, meeting on Friday afternoon to review the department’s payroll process, committee roles and the School Department, the board’s code of ethics and governance norms, and the committee response to criticism and claims.

    The meeting was called after nearly six weeks of arguments conducted primarily over Facebook, beginning in August with a description of the Parker Avenue School lease to Community Teamwork Inc.

    During that six-week interval, some school board members, a selectman and others posted a daily blizzard of criticism of each other in less-than-respectful terms. In one post, School Committee Chair Renee Young called on selectmen to remove Taylor as chairman of that board.

    Neither the town manager nor the superintendent directly participated in the Facebook fight, although their names came up frequently.

    School Committee member Linda Trouville may have spoken for many who have witnessed the social media exchanges when she said, “I’ve been taken aback by the slander I’ve seen.”

    In the course of the school board meeting, School Committee member Allison Volpe made the motion to remove Duda from all her committee assignments because she posted several public records documents on Facebook regarding Graham.

    “I respect you but I can’t trust you,” Volpe told Duda.

    In a long introductory section, Duda said, “For approximately the past month and a half, I have been researching post retiree earnings with the Dracut Public Schools and our internal processes as it relates to these employees.”

    That and similar statements may be what led to allegations of violations of School Committee norms. One of those norms reads, “The School Committee will lead by example and work to build trust. We agree to avoid words and actions that create a negative impression of an individual, the School Committee, or the district. While we encourage debate and differing points of view, we will speak with care and respect.”

    Meta is rolling out new protections aimed at making social media safer for young people. In September 2024, Instagram introduced Teen Accounts, which come with built-in safeguards that limit who can contact teens, what content they see and how long they spend on the app.

    Since then, adoption has been strong: 97% of teens ages 13-15 kept the default settings, and 94% of parents say Teen Accounts are helpful. Now, Meta is expanding those protections beyond Instagram. Teen Accounts are coming to Facebook and Messenger worldwide, bringing stronger safety standards to more of the apps teens use every day.

    Meta Teen Accounts bring stronger safety tools

    Teen Accounts automatically apply safety limits, including:

    • Restrictions on who can send direct messages.
    • Filtering to reduce exposure to sensitive or harmful content.
    • Time management tools to encourage healthier app use.

    Meta says these measures address parents’ top concerns, giving teens more control while reassuring families that their online experiences are safer.

    Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, emphasized the goal, saying, “We want parents to feel good about their teens using social media. … Teen Accounts are designed to give parents peace of mind.” 

    Critics and researchers question Meta’s teen safety tools

    However, not everyone agrees that these protections go far enough. Research regarding the effectiveness of Instagram’s teen safety features, as reported by child-safety advocacy groups and corroborated by researchers at Northeastern University (Sept. 25, 2025), paints a different picture. The study found that only eight of 47 safety features tested were fully effective, and internal documents suggest that Meta was aware of some shortcomings. Critics also argued that certain protections, like manual comment-hiding, place the burden on teens themselves rather than preventing harm upfront. They questioned whether time management tools were robust enough, giving some features middling grades despite functioning as described.

    “Misleading and dangerously speculative reports such as this one undermine the important conversation about teen safety,” Meta told CyberGuy, “This report repeatedly misrepresents our efforts to empower parents and protect teens, misstating how our safety tools work and how millions of parents and teens are using them today. 

    “Teen Accounts lead the industry because they provide automatic safety protections and straightforward parental controls. The reality is teens who were placed into these protections saw less sensitive content, experienced less unwanted contact and spent less time on Instagram at night. Parents also have robust tools at their fingertips, from limiting usage to monitoring interactions. We’ll continue improving our tools, and we welcome constructive feedback. But this report is not that.”

    Meta expands teen safety with school partnerships

    Meta is also extending protections to the classroom. The School Partnership Program is now available to every middle school and high school in the U.S. Through this program, educators can report issues such as bullying or unsafe content directly from Instagram.

    Reports receive prioritized review, typically within 48 hours. Schools that join also get:

    • Access to educational resources on online safety.
    • A banner on their profile signaling official partnership.

    HOW FAKE MICROSOFT ALERTS TRICK YOU INTO PHISHING SCAMS

    How the FileFix attack works

    As reported by researchers at Acronis, a leading cybersecurity and data protection company, the attack begins with a phishing page that looks like a message from Meta’s support team, claiming that your account will be disabled in seven days unless you view an “incident report.” Instead of providing an actual document, the page disguises a malicious PowerShell command as a file path.

    Victims are instructed to copy it, open File Explorer, and paste it into the address bar. While it appears harmless, this action secretly runs code that starts the malware infection process.

    This method is part of a family of attacks known as ClickFix, where people are tricked into pasting commands into system dialogs. FileFix, created by Red Team researcher mr.d0x, builds on that idea by exploiting the File Explorer address bar instead. In this campaign, the attackers improved the trick by hiding the malicious command behind long strings of spaces, so only the fake file path is visible to the victim.

    A hidden script then downloads what looks like a JPG image from Bitbucket, but the file contains embedded code. Once executed, it extracts another script and decrypts the final payload, bypassing many security tools in the process.

    What StealC tries to steal

    The malware delivered by this campaign is StealC, an infostealer that collects a wide range of personal and organizational data. It is designed to grab browser credentials and authentication cookies from Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and other browsers.

    It also targets messaging apps like Discord, Telegram and Pidgin, along with cryptocurrency wallets such as Bitcoin, Ethereum and Exodus. StealC goes further by attempting to compromise cloud accounts from Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure, VPN services like ProtonVPN and even gaming accounts from Battle.net and Ubisoft. In addition, it can take screenshots of the victim’s desktop, giving attackers a live view of sensitive activity.

    Acronis reported that the campaign has already appeared in several different versions over a short period, with changes in payloads and infrastructure. This suggests that the attackers are actively testing and refining their methods to avoid detection and improve success rates.

    5 ways you can protect yourself from FileFix attacks

    To stay protected against attacks like FileFix and prevent malware such as StealC from stealing sensitive information, you need to combine caution with practical security measures. The following steps can help safeguard accounts, devices, and personal data.

    1) Be skeptical of urgent warnings

    Attackers rely on panic. Treat any message claiming your Meta account or other services will be disabled within days with caution. Verify the alert directly through official platforms rather than clicking links or following instructions from an email or web page.

    2) Avoid copying commands from unknown sources

    FileFix relies on convincing you to paste hidden PowerShell commands disguised as file paths. Never paste commands into system dialogs, File Explorer, or terminals unless you are absolutely certain of their origin.

    3) Invest in personal data removal services

    FileFix and StealC thrive on the information they can extract from a device or linked accounts.   • ICE Wants to Build Out a 24/7 Social Media Surveillance Team

    United States immigration authorities are moving to dramatically expand their social media surveillance, with plans to hire nearly 30 contractors to sift through posts, photos, and messages—raw material to be transformed into intelligence for deportation raids and arrests.

    Federal contracting records reviewed by WIRED show that the agency is seeking private vendors to run a multiyear surveillance program out of two of its little-known targeting centers. The program envisions stationing nearly 30 private analysts at Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities in Vermont and Southern California. Their job: Scour Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and other platforms, converting posts and profiles into fresh leads for enforcement raids.

    The initiative is still at the request-for-information stage, a step agencies use to gauge interest from contractors before an official bidding process. But draft planning documents show the scheme is ambitious: ICE wants a contractor capable of staffing the centers around the clock, constantly processing cases on tight deadlines, and supplying the agency with the latest and greatest subscription-based surveillance software.

    The facilities at the heart of this plan are two of ICE’s three targeting centers, responsible for producing leads that feed directly into the agency’s enforcement operations. The National Criminal Analysis and Targeting Center sits in Williston, Vermont. It handles cases across much of the eastern US. The Pacific Enforcement Response Center, based in Santa Ana, California, oversees the western region and is designed to run 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    Internal planning documents show that each site would be staffed with a mix of senior analysts, shift leads, and rank-and-file researchers. Vermont would see a team of a dozen contractors, including a program manager and 10 analysts. California would host a larger, nonstop watch floor with 16 staff. At all times, at least one senior analyst and three researchers would be on duty at the Santa Ana site.

    Together, these teams would operate as intelligence arms of ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations division. They will receive tips and incoming cases, research individuals online, and package the results into dossiers that could be used by field offices to plan arrests.

  • Meta Will Soon Personalize Ads Based on What Users Type Into Its AI Tools

    Meta Platforms said on Wednesday it would begin using people’s interactions with its generative AI tools to personalize content and advertising across its apps such as Facebook and Instagram starting on December 16.

    Users will be notified of the changes from October 7 and they will not have an option to opt out, the social media giant said, though the update applies only to those who use Meta AI.

    Meta said users’ interactions with its AI features, whether by voice or text, would be added to existing data such as likes and follows to shape recommendations for content and ads, including Reels and ads. For example, a user talking about hiking with Meta AI could later be shown hiking groups, friends’ trail updates or ads for boots.

    “People’s interactions simply are going to be another piece of the input that will inform the personalization of feeds and ads,” said Christy Harris, privacy policy manager at Meta. “We’re still in the process of building the first offerings that will make use of this data.”

    When people have conversations with Meta AI about more sensitive topics such as their religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, Meta will not use those topics to show them ads, it said.

    The rollout will begin in most regions on December 16 and expand over time, excluding the UK, the European Union and South Korea.

    Meta AI now has 1 billion monthly active users across the company’s family of apps.

    CEO Mark Zuckerberg said at the company’s annual shareholder meeting this year that the “focus for this year is deepening the experience and making Meta AI the leading personal AI with an emphasis on personalization, voice conversations and entertainment.”

    Meta launched its first consumer-ready smart glasses with a built-in display at its annual Connect conference last month. 

    The company’s use of AI interactions for ads comes as other tech giants, including Google and Amazon, have begun monetizing AI tools, often through cloud-based services. But few have used AI chat interactions to personalize content and advertising across multiple platforms at the scale Meta is attempting.

  • Instagram head says company is not using your microphone to listen to you (with AI data, it won’t need to) | TechCrunch

    Instagram head Adam Mosseri posted on his account on Wednesday to dispel the myth that the social networking giant is actively “listening” to its users surreptitiously, in order to target them with relevant ads. The idea that Meta would secretly turn on the microphones on users’ phones to record their conversations is an age-old conspiracy theory — and one that the company has disputed before.

    But, ironically, Mosseri’s new myth-busting claim comes just as Meta has announced it will soon target ads to users across its social apps using data collected from their interactions with its AI products.

    In other words, if Meta didn’t need to record your conversations via your microphone before to produce eerily accurate recommendations, it definitely won’t need to now.

    On Instagram, Mosseri says he’s had a number of conversations about Meta listening to its users, many of whom can’t believe how well the company’s ad targeting actually works. (Even his wife has brought up the topic, he says.)

    By now, most of us have either had the experience ourselves or at least know someone who claims that Meta must have been secretly recording them to know what they were likely to click on. Sometimes, you are only thinking about a topic or product, and then see the content appear in your feed, making it seem as if Meta is a mind reader.

    The company has repeatedly disputed these claims, trying to explain that it doesn’t have to record your conversations to make its recommendations so successful. (Mosseri also says that would be a “gross violation of privacy,” but Meta is not a company that typically drives decisions with user privacy in mind.)

    Still, the company doesn’t necessarily have to “listen” to users to listen to them.

    In 2016, Meta (then known as Facebook) published a blog post that outright stated that it didn’t use your phone’s microphone to determine what ads to show users or what content appears in their News Feed. Years later, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified before Congress, denying once again that the company was collecting users’ audio data for this purpose.

    Happy to have something it can deny on the privacy front, just as it’s about to scoop up more data than ever before, Mosseri reiterates these points in his post on Instagram.

    He says that, for starters, users would know if their phone’s microphone was on because they would see a light at the top of their screen, and the phone’s battery would drain faster.

    Instead, Mosseri explains that the tech giant’s recommendation system is so powerful because of how it works with its advertisers, who share information with the company about who has visited their websites. That information helps Meta target users with relevant ads. In addition, the company shows people ads that it thinks they may be interested in based on what similar people with similar interests are also interested in. This algorithm-based ad tech has made Meta a money-printing machine over the years.

    Now Meta is going to leverage AI to make these ad-targeting decisions. So if people thought they were being listened to before, it will only get worse. The company said its new privacy policy, which is being released on December 16, will allow it to use data from consumers’ interactions with its AI products in most markets as another signal. And it’s a potentially even more powerful one than the “people who like this also like that” system, given that users are engaging in far more personal conversations with AI chatbots like Meta AI about their interests, ideas, and activities.

    Mosseri also points out that sometimes it’s not technology alone that’s driving the hyper-accurate recommendations — it’s either just a coincidence or a bit of human psychology at play.

    “You might have actually seen that ad before you had the conversation and not realized it,” he points out. “We scroll quickly. We scroll by ads quickly. And sometimes you internalize some of that, and that actually affects what you talk about later,” Mosseri says.
