  • Gaza aid flotilla targeted by drones and explosions, activists say

Organizers of the pro-Palestinian flotilla hoping to carry aid to Gaza said that Israel attacked them with “flash bombs, explosive flares, and suspected chemicals” as it approached the war-torn Palestinian territory.

“The Israeli occupation forces have launched at least 11 attacks on the Global Sumud Flotilla as it is 600 nautical miles [1,100 kilometres] from Gaza,” the CODEPINK organization said in a social media post early on Wednesday.

“Israel is threatening and terrorizing humanitarians carrying aid in international waters. Demand safe passage for the flotilla. Break the siege on Gaza now,” the group said, in comments also shared by the flotilla.

Global Sumud Flotilla published a video on its social media channels early on Wednesday showing what it said were “flashbangs… a non-lethal explosive device used mainly by police or military forces. It is designed to incapacitate people temporarily without causing permanent injury, making it useful in crowd control or hostage rescue operations.”

The activists said that “explosive flares” and “suspected chemicals” were deployed against the boats as well as “unidentified drones and communications jamming.”

“We are witnessing these psychological operations firsthand, right now, but we will not be intimidated,” the flotilla said in a Telegram post.

Earlier, Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the occupied Palestinian territories, reposted one of the flotilla’s videos on her X page.

“9th attack reported on humanitarian boats in int’l waters (southwest of Crete) – in the middle of the night! Et voilà: genocidaire on land, maritime outlaw at sea,” she wrote in the social media thread.

The Global Sumud Flotilla, which set off from Barcelona in late August with hundreds of activists on board, is aiming to breach the Israeli sea blockade of the Gaza coast to deliver humanitarian aid to the population of the war-torn territory. “Sumud” means steadfastness in Arabic.

Israel has in the past thwarted a number of attempts to breach its sea blockade. Most recently, activists said two Global Sumud Flotilla vessels were attacked while in Tunisian waters over about 24 hours earlier in September.

  • 2 men arrested after explosive device is found under news media vehicle in Salt Lake City

    [ad_1]

SALT LAKE CITY — Two men were arrested after police found an explosive device under a news media vehicle on Friday.

Adeeb Nasir, 58, and Adil Justice Ahmed Nasir, 31, were both arrested for investigation of manufacturing or possessing a weapon of mass destruction, threat of terrorism, attempted aggravated arson, and possessing or removing incendiary items and their parts, according to a police booking affidavit.

The Salt Lake City Police Department Bomb Squad and the Unified Fire Authority Arson/Bomb Squad responded to a suspicious device on Friday in Salt Lake City.

Police say they found the device placed under a news media vehicle parked next to an occupied building and determined it to be a real explosive device. It “had been lit but failed to function as designed,” according to the affidavit.

The document did not give an address for the building, nor did it have information on what bomb experts did to defuse the device.

The two suspects were located in Magna after the FBI assumed primary jurisdiction. Agents served a federal search warrant at the residence of the suspects on Saturday, police documents indicate.

Inside, authorities found both suspects, “two hoax weapons of mass destruction,” two firearms and illegal narcotics, according to the documents.

The suspects said that the devices were real when asked about them, and police documents stated that law enforcement then evacuated the residence to “initiate disposal procedures.” Nearby residences were also evacuated.

Police requested that the suspects be held without bail to prevent further threats to the public.

The FBI seized evidence related to the explosive devices from the Salt Lake City scene and evidence of other crimes, according to the affidavit. That evidence included firearms, explosives and related components, illegal narcotics and electronic devices, the document says.

  • Search continues for suspect who tried blowing up ATM in busy Woburn shopping plaza

Search continues for suspect who tried blowing up ATM in busy Woburn shopping plaza

A multi-agency search is continuing on Friday for a vandal who investigators say set off an explosive device at an ATM in the parking lot of a busy Woburn shopping plaza.

The explosion happened at an Eastern Bank ATM in the West Marine Plaza on Mishawum Road, near the intersection of Interstate 93 and Route 128, early Thursday morning, according to the Woburn Police Department.

Police say officers responding to a report of a person tampering with a drive-through ATM found damage caused by an apparent detonation, prompting a request for assistance from Massachusetts State Police and FBI Boston bomb squads.

An investigation revealed that a lone male placed a possible pipe bomb on the ATM, quickly exited the drive-through area, and detonated it moments later, according to police.

The explosion impacted nearby businesses, including a restaurant that had to shut down during the lunch rush while the investigation was underway.

“The ATM is right near the restaurant, so I just saw it look like it was plyed, or maybe somebody blew it up, but there was debris everywhere in front of the restaurant,” Saigon Eatery manager Peter Tran told Boston 25 News. “There was a lot of small metal debris all over the place, and I had to go outside and sweep most of it.”

Brian Leary, a worker in the plaza, added, “I stepped out here. I saw that the ATM was a little ajar, just like the front screen on it. They had it all taped off anyway.”

There were no injuries reported in the explosion.

Eastern Bank says no money was taken and that its storefront operated as normal afterward.

As the search for the suspect continues, authorities don’t believe there is a threat to public safety.

Anyone with information on the incident is urged to contact Woburn police at 781-933-1212 or the FBI at 857-386-2000.
